( text: ) 100%. don't be surprised when you suddenly end up with a ton of christmas cookies, homemade peppermint bark, etc. i think you have been more than good to me so far, and i believe you when you say it. i'll be honest i had sort of given up on the whole connect thing. i kept making a profile and then deactivating it because i was tired of the endless disconnect with people, but i don't really feel that between us and it's been nice. for the first time in a really long time my heart flutters when i get a text notification. feels incredible to have something to look forward to. i mean this without sounding totally biased, but you deserve it. i see nothing but great things for you in the future after such a stellar performance. i would like that. maybe i could even convince you to stay for new years as well? watching the fireworks above sydney harbor is magical.
( text ): you had me at peppermint bark. it's my second favorite christmas dessert after lemon crinkle cookies. i don't blame you tbh. online dating profiles can be so tricky. half of the swipes don't lead anywhere & the other half feel like pulling teeth when talking to people. makes me glad things have been smooth sailing for us so far. you're the sweetest. i think you could convince me to stay for new years, but only if you promise to be my midnight kiss.

Across the Wide Pacific
Stepping outside the arrivals doors at Sydney airport feels a lot like exiting the Naples (FL) airport — very slightly damp. In many contexts that would not exactly be a compliment, but I do appreciate that the moisture content in the air makes it very clear that I am Somewhere Else than home. The palm trees also help clear that up a bit. It is necessary, to a certain extent, because parts of Sydney feel very like Boston. Our walk down Pitt Street, a main shopping drag, was indistinguishable from the shopping areas just outside Faneuil Hall, except for the unfamiliar flora. Sydney also has a European-but-grew-up vibe that echoes Boston, with a variety of colonial-era buildings alongside modern offices and skyscrapers. I know I said the same thing about London, but their old stuff is older. Sydney and Boston are the same age.
Sydney is notable in my opinion for having a lot of public green spaces. I took a stroll along the Hermitage Foreshore Walk, a sort of cliff walk with views of Sydney harbor on one side and close-ish-to-authentic bush land on the other side, and was struck by the foresight of the government in preserving the land so that everyone could access the waterside. I was also impressed that they allowed people to go to the small beaches that dotted the water’s edge, even though there were slippery rocks and certainly no way of monitoring safety. But they also had signs up saying they would close a lot of the areas from 3pm onwards given that it is NYE and people would probably swarm irresponsibly around these dangerous areas hoping for a view of the fireworks, so the government isn’t inappropriately laissez-faire, they just trust people in normal situations and look out for abnormal ones. I like that. From what we saw this morning — people streaming into the area around the opera house at 9 in the morning to get good viewing spots — NYE is abnormal indeed.
Anyway, the walk was beautiful and I enjoyed the views of the harbor and the new trees.
Our hotel is amazing. The aesthetic is like if Anthropologie got a real job — kind of bohemian chic, but functional. Lots of (real) plants, earth-toned linen sheets, iron. Voluminous and warm shower. It’s in a quiet but not inactive neighborhood. There is an onsite bakery which appears to be amazing — we haven’t tried it yet but we had brunch at the associated cafe and found it delightful. (For me: sourdough toast with avocado, heirloom cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, and some kind of vinaigrette. For Bart: idk, toast with meat? It wasn’t important.) I am eager to try their croissants.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks are tonight, as I alluded to earlier, but given our energy levels and the expected crowds there is no way we are doing that in person. I have aspirations of watching them on TV but given that it’s 6:30pm local time (2:30am home time, my non-reset-watch tells me) and I could easily go to sleep right now, I don’t know how we can make it til midnight. I guess if we don’t make it, we can cheer at [sound of mental gears creaking and grinding] 4pm tomorrow afternoon with the rest of the east coast. Slowpokes.

spending the last couple days of 2024 in australia had been a pleasant surprise. paul had originally been planning on spending the day doing nothing on his own, but the sudden introduction of alycia to his life had changed that completely. something about the girl had him wrapped around her finger, his free time often spent with her or thinking of her. it had been so long since he had last felt this way about someone, his relationship with phoebe a distant memory and feeling now. so having this, having her by his side, ignited a spark in him that he had dearly missed. not quite love but so far from being platonic that he knew his feelings could no longer be ignored. with a night of celebrations before them, paul knew it was to perfect time to make his feelings known. he could handle rejection so that eased any worries that had been building beneath the surface, knowing the risk of sharing his feelings with someone. it was worth the risk. she was worth the risk. adjusting the white shirt he currently sported, paul let his gaze wander over to alycia, taking in the sight of her silently and fondly. they had already arrived at the sydney harbor, excited chatter filling the air as people waited in anticipation for the fireworks show to begin. paul himself couldn't deny the feeling of giddiness that filled him, excited to be ringing in the new year with someone he cared about. it felt like a fresh start - like he would be able to leave the exhaustion of 2024 behind him as soon as the clock struck midnight. "thirty minutes until midnight." he noted, turning entirely towards alycia to give her his attention, reaching out to lace their fingers together. "are you excited?"
