Uncovering More Bridges

This morning’s blood sugar was down a bit, to 141. After we had our coffee and brain games, we had French toast and leftover bacon for breakfast.

With very little in the way of rainy weather in the forecast, we decided to get on the road again. We left the house before noon and went to Costco to fill up the tank. (The price was back to $2.99 per gallon.) Then we visited the nearby PetSmart to get some kitty litter. After that we hit I-5 and headed south.

The next set of covered bridges on our list are in Douglas County, which is immediately south of Lane County. There are six on the list, though we only had time to visit two today.

The first one was the Pass Creek Bridge, located in Drain, a town of a little more than 1,000 people. Although the official date for the construction of the bridge is 1925, members of the Umpqua Historic Preservation Society claim the bridge was built in 1906, according to Oregon Department of Transportation. The bridge was moved a few hundred feet from its original site in 1987 and replaced with a concrete span. The bridge was reassembled behind the Drain Civic Center and carried pedestrian traffic until it was closed in 2014 due to deterioration.

From Drain, we followed Eagle Valley Road to Yoncalla, another small town with just about 1,000 residents. We came across the Main Street Espresso & Bakery, a little drive-through, and got a nice hot mocha. A few more miles down the road brought us back to I-5, and we continued south again.

Our next visit was to the Rochester Covered Bridge, a one-lane structure built in 1933 over the Calapooya Creek, and located about three miles west of Sutherlin. The bridge’s design has been called “unique” among Oregon’s covered bridges. It has has four windows on each side, portals with flat arched openings, and exposed false beams at the gable ends. It was remodeled in 1969, replacing portal boarding, approaches, and abutments.

We drove on into Sutherlin after finishing our visit to the bridge. With a population near 8,000, it is the second most populous city in Douglas County, incorporated in 1911. Nearby features include Cooper Creek Reservoir, the Umpqua River, and numerous vineyards.

The four remaining bridges in Douglas County will require at least a full day to cover, or perhaps two, given the distance between them. One is a long drive east of Roseburg, two more are near Myrtle Creek, and the last is near Milo, east of Canyonville on the South Umpqua River.

In addition to Douglas County, there are bridges remaining to be seen in Jackson, Coos, Lincoln, Polk, Multnomah and Deschutes counties. We may not finish the list until the spring.

After checking out Sutherlin, we got back on I-5 and headed north. When we reached Springfield a little after 3 p.m., we stopped by Mezza Luna and picked up a pizza to take home. After consuming a couple of slices, we took a nap.

A bit later, we prepared for another fire, and once we got it under way, we streamed the final episode of the fourth series of “Vienna Blood.” Max recovered from being shot, but there is still enough intrigue remaining that we hope another series will be forthcoming.

Next we watched the third episode of the new “Darby and Joan” series, had another slice of pizza we called “dinner,” and then finished the evening with a chocolate chip cookie and episodes of “Father Brown” and “Harry Wild.”
