Crossing Another Bridge
My blood sugar remained a bit high this morning, at 160. Not sure what’s contributing to the numbers, but the extra Metformin doesn’t seem to be bringing it down.
After our coffee and the brain games, we had oatmeal for breakfast.
I got a call from the surgery center to confirm a check-in time for the cataract procedure next Tuesday, and it will be at 6:30 a.m. Fortunately, for that time of day, the drive won’t take too long, but I have to avoid food and don’t take any of my morning meds until after the surgery. Nancy will have to drive me home, of course, and then we’ll return at 3:45 p.m. for the first post-op check-up.
It was very foggy and cold this morning. We had to delay our departure for the trek down to Roseburg and beyond to see the Cavitt Creek Bridge. We left about 11 a.m., stopped for a hot mocha at Old Crow Coffee, then headed south on I-5.
Just north of Roseburg we turned off the highway and had a nice wander along North Bank Road through some rural areas and along the North Umpqua River before running into OR 138. That took us another mile or so before we turned south on Little River Road, which eventually brought us near the bridge.
Built in 1943 by Floyd Frear, noted Douglas County builder, the Cavitt Creek Bridge carries Cavitt Creek Road over the Little River. It’s about 20 miles east of Roseburg and a few yards upstream from where Cavitt Creek runs into the Little River. The creek, the road and the bridge were all named for Robert L. Cavitt, who settled along the creek in the mid-19th century.
After taking enough pictures for our covered bridge collection, we drove back through Roseburg. Nancy looked up some possibilities for food, and she found Alexander’s, a delightful Greek restaurant where we enjoyed a tasty lunch of a dip combo—tzatziki, eggplant dip and hummus—a gyro, and a cup of avgolemono. We got baklava to go for dessert.
We took a short walk around the block in downtown Roseburg after eating, then got back on I-5. Nancy took over driving after a little bit, and I managed to snooze for a while.
We got home a little after 4 p.m. and took a bite of the baklava. It’s got enough sugar packed into it I probably should not eat more than one bite a day.
We heated up the last of the leftover spinach lentil curry for dinner, then we built a fire and settled in for some streaming. We started with Colbert’s Thursday show, then caught the first episode of the new C.B. Strike series, “Ink Black Heart,” and finished with two more episodes of “Still Standing,” with Jonny Harris visiting Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, and Pinawa, Manitoba.

A rebel without a cause. Our emotional Siberian husky, Togo, has to keep his support milk jugs close. He loves his milk jugs! Pulls them out of the garbage and brings them in the living room for comfort.
