Aman Signs Fourth Resort in Japan

Aman has signed its fourth resort in Japan, an all-season retreat situated on the high slopes of Mt. Moiwa on an untouched nature reserve in Hokkaido’s Niseko region. I love analyzing the environments in Layers of Fear, but there are some things I still haven’t deciphered the meaning behind yet. Granted, this is to be expected with a game where the visuals are left up to interpretation. You won’t understand everything. But my hope is that by discussing one such element, I might spark a discussion and even theories as to its meaning.

Today’s subject happens to be the deer heads. They seem to be in a similar situation as the war medals: visually everywhere, but never spoken about. They are very much present in the Painter’s subconscious.

Now of course, there are a lot of objects in Layers that are simply there for decoration. But the way the deer heads are displayed in both the main story and Inheritance make me question how important they really are. You find them all over: from the nicely furnished room in the beginning, to the checkers board puzzle at the end.

There are a number of sequences that suggest the deer heads hold importance.

Right after you pick up the Whispered Words engagement ring and go through the door, you can find the secret room to the left, near the rocking chair. As you approach the end of the room, the wall fades away to reveal a prominent deer head. The entrance closes as you enter, and the only way to return to the rest of the game is to pull the deer’s tongue three times. Then you hear ringing and the deer head disappears, antlers falling to the ground, and you are free to leave the secret room.

In a long hallway, you find two deer heads hanging on the wall - and right below each of them sits a chair. As you approach the sounds of the crying Wife, the Painter falls for a moment, and the shadow is gone along with her voice. In her place are scorch marks on the wall, and the heads have fallen to the ground, crushing the chairs.

Early on in the game, you reach a nice room with a deer head above the fireplace. Nearby is a doll suspended in a frame. If you approach the latter, you fall into a secret area that contains a rat drawing and a memento. After leaving this secret passage, you re-enter to find the doll massacred on the deer’s antlers.

Later on, when you are in the hall where the doll runs away from you, decorations can be found above a doorway and down a short hallway. They feature a baby doll with antlers growing from its head.

The next few instances are from Inheritance.

There is a deer head in a room during the office sequence. If you break the vase, take the key, and open the case in this area, you will be rewarded with a drawing, but the deer head will fall, and flies will swarm you, causing you to ‘pass out’. A way to get the drawing without triggering the deer head is to leave the exit door for this room open.

In the burning hallway sequence, you will get a glimpse of the Painter’s 3d model coming closer to you, holding a teddy bear and the dog on his hands, antlers on both sides of his head.

When you choose the paints instead of the crayons, there is a point where you must make a long trek through hallways and push a ball over a bunch of toys in order to reach the black paint. The wooden hallway that leads to this area is lined with antlers.

What does all this mean? Why are the antlers used on the Painter and the baby dolls? Are they meant to symbolize the Painter in some way? If so, why use a deer head of all things? Was he a hunter back in the day?

The prevalence of the deer heads and antlers is not to be overlooked, but unfortunately, I haven’t found a satisfying explanation for them yet. If you have an inkling, please feel free to share those thoughts. Layers of Fear has plenty of visual story elements, but admittedly, some are harder to decipher than others.

Introducing – The MB&F X L’Epée X Massena LAB T-Rex Bronze

First teased as a unique piece for Only Watch 2019, T-Rex was the result of yet another fruitful collaboration between watchmaker MB&F and clockmaker L’Epée. A clock with dinosaur legs… Yes, this was another example of Max Büsser’s wildly imaginative pieces. Today, there’s an even bolder, even wilder version coming, imagined together with watch expert William Massena, with a structure executed in patinated bronze. Rugged and organic, meet the MB&F X L’Epée X Massena LAB T-Rex Bronze. 

A suspended movement with a Murano glass display and attached to the bony legs of a Tyrannosaurus Rex with taloned feet… Yes, this is clearly not your usual grandfather’s fireplace clock. Once again, these MB&F X L’Epée are artworks, meant to create emotions (in both directions) and design experiments. Bold, unusual, wild… And even wilder today!

The original T-Rex clock was made of stainless steel and palladium-plated brass and bronze, weighing close to 2kg and standing tall at almost 30cm. Its most striking feature was his realistic legs and sharp, deathly talons. The result of designer Maximilian Maertens’ work, the legs were made using 3D scans of real, fossilised T-Rex bones and are sandblasted in contrast to the polished biomechanical structure linking them to the suspended clock. The inspiration came from Max Büsser’s on one side, a quirky ornament on his desk composed of a Christmas bauble perched atop two chicken legs, and from Maximilian Maertens and his memories of 1993 movie Jurassic Park.

Now enters William Massena and his project Massena LAB – which already gave birth to a bronze Habring² and a brown Unimatic Modello Uno. ​Playing off the original design, the ​T-Rex Bronze​ ​switches out the use of steel for bronze, an alloy used by the early humans – bronze age meets Jurassic (a few million years apart, ok…) The structure of this new T-Rex clock is made of sandblasted bronze alloy, resulting in an unusual matte golden colour. The 3D-shaped legs and feet are also bronze, but here aged and stabilized by hand, creating a dark brown colour. Note that this T-Rex Bronze is specially treated to “lock in time” its colour and material characteristics – don’t worry about it turning into a weird, toxic-like sculpture.

Just like the steel edition, the display is composed of a green “eyeball” dial, made of hand-blown Murano glass, which greatly pairs with the colour of the bronze alloy. Time (hours and minutes) is indicated by arched hands running over the Murano glass. Behind this green eye is a hand-made movement by L’Epée 1839, with an oversized balance running at 2.5Hz and a power reserve of 8 days. The clock is wound with a key at the back of the movement, while time-setting is done at the centre of the dial with the same key.

1. Musée Sainte-Croix

In the Merovingian period, they made a mess when it came to baptism, and instead of the small font, the church contained a large octagonal tank, in which everyone needed to completely immerse themselves to complete the admission ceremony.

4. Église Saint-Hilaire Le Grand

Because of its location on the Way of St. James pilgrimage route, this hushed romanesque church is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Revolution wasn’t kind to the building, and the nave was torn down and had to be rebuilt.

But in the choir and ambulance, there is a lot of splendid medieval art. Four chapels have frescoes from the 1000s, among them one of the first medieval representations of the apocalypse.

Lying down in the catacombs, a 17th-century chest holds the relics of St. Hilary, Bishop Poitiers in the 4th century and is the leading writer and theologian of the era.

5. Parc de Blossac

By the middle of the 18th century, Count Blossac had a big plan for Poitiers to shake off the medieval image with this expansive avenue and open space like this lavish park. The park is actually skirted by some of the old city walls, as you can see in the southern corner.

From there, you can also follow the Chemin de la Cagouillere walk to the right bank of the Clain River. Most of the parks are French-style parterres, with straight-arrow boulevards next to the terrain.

There is also a romantic English garden with flower gardens, a decorative river, statues, caves and some menagerie with guinea pigs, macaws, and rabbits.

6. Église Notre-Dame la Grande

Inside are medieval paintings above the choir, showing Christ in majesty and the Virgin and Child surrounded by a mandorla. But it’s the church’s portal that wins most acclaim, with sophisticated 12th-century friezes showing images from passages in the old and new testaments.

7. Grande Salle – Palais de Poitiers

There, only one room is visible in the courts of Poitiers, formerly the headquarters of Duke Aquitaine and Earl Poitou, and you have to be brave to check the bag airlines to enter. But if you’re curious about English and French history this is a small price to pay.

Because the Grand Salle is a dining room ordered in the 1190s by Eleanor of Aquitaine, one of the most powerful women in medieval Europe. At 50 meters by 17, it may well have been the largest in Europe at the time.

There are three giant fireplaces, magical traces on the windows and sculptures of figures in the court of Poitiers, like John of Berry and Isabeau of Bavaria.

8. Poitiers Cathedral

Eleanor also commissioned the city's large church in 1162 and it was completed about a century later, quite quickly for a building of this size in the middle ages. If you fall in love with medieval history, you might have a field day here.

First, almost all of the stained-glass windows in the choir and transept are original, and if you're an eagle eye, you'll recognize Eleanor and Henry II in one. The wooden choir stalls are some of the oldest in France, carved in the gothic Paris style in the mid-13th century.

Originally there would have been 100, but even with the 74 remainings, you’re left in no doubt about the high status of the cathedral chapter in these times.

9. Hôtel Fumé

The Rue de la Chaîne is one of the most interesting streets in the city, crowded with medieval houses with cross patterns on wooden frames and iron gas lamps suspended in the middle of the road.

Follow it up the hill and it transforms into Rue René Descartes, on which you will be surprised at the majestic facade of Hôtel Fumé. This is a gaudy gothic castle built in the 15th and 16th centuries by the mayor of the city and is currently the university's humanities department.

Walkthrough the walkway into the courtyard, where the sculpted, twisted columns support a semi-wooden showroom with crushed windows.

10. Place du Maréchal-Leclerc

The main square in Poitier Cente-Ville walkway has a completely different feeling from the narrow medieval city streets but very lovely because of the feeling of space and airy. Place du Maréchal-Leclerc is enclosed by Belle Époque and art deco buildings.

Note the facade of Société Générale, which dates back to 1928 and the old city theater built-in 1954 in the style of artistic renaissance.

The City Hall is a bit older, dating to the mid-1800s during the Second Empire, and it hosts occasional open weekends when you can go in to poke around the salons and grand staircase.

Over the past few years, stylish modern benches have been added to the plaza, and there are cafes around if you need a break to visit.

A Studio Loft Which Is A Home And Art Gallery

Located on a quiet street that is parallel to a busy boulevard in Alsancak, one of the most densely populated neighborhoods of Izmir, Turkey, stands an unusual interior conversion. Originally the brief called for the ground and upper floor of this building (which is part of a five story block of flats) to be made into a dedicated photo studio only. During the course of the design process, the client and architect teams Zaas, and Yerce, reimagined the space and agreed that this could go beyond being just a studio. The end result is a unique place that encompasses a home, a professional photo studio, and a public art gallery.

Located right at the back of the first floor, there lies a private living area. A ceiling tv mount allows a flat screen television to be suspended in front of the window glass, which has a view out onto the quiet street.

A double workspace also resides inside the living room, with the desk pushed up against an internal glass wall, looking out. A trio of floating wall shelves hold some books and pictures.

An unusual feature wall lines the opposite side of the living room, behind a run of white base units. Ambient lighting glows from behind the cabinets to illuminate the installation.

The residential first floor is reached via a floating staircase design from the photographic studio and gallery space. Each step is a metal 3D parallelogram frame, mounted individually to the studio wall to form the ascent to the mezzanine platform. The modern handrail design is lit by LED strip lights.

Just beneath the lip of the mezzanine, a guest reception desk is situated by a small storage wall with a bright yellow niche. A black accent chair rocks in the centre of the studio space on the ground floor, offering a spot to relax between photo shoots.

A small side table, beside the black and wood lounge chair, provides a spot to put down a mug of coffee during work breaks – or even to burn a relaxing candle on. The chair and its partner are positioned toward the view of the peaceful street, seen through huge black framed glass doors.

A grey gallery wall jags around the opposite side of the studio to the staircase. Perimeter lighting beams along its upper and lower edge. A work table is set up behind the guest reception desk, in front of a kitchenette and the door to the gallery’s bathroom.

Just beyond the landing at the top of the floating staircase, there is a relaxation area with a flickering modern fireplace and two comfortable contemporary armchairs. At design stage, the question was raised as to how a simple department could be transformed into a multifunctional area where different functions and settings for life could coexist. Solutions were sought to establish permeability within these functions, to create free flow between use and life.

The first floor landing joins with industrial style platform, which is a walkway to a home library area. Because one of the main objectives of the remodel was to maximise creative space for a photo studio, the mezzanine and first floor are designed to serve as extra space for photographic shoots if desired. The functions of working, living, exhibiting all intertwined under the roof of a photographic studio come together to fashion a ‘loft’ kind of lifestyle.

A chunky stone hearth underlines the modern fireplace in the relaxation area. The hearth is dressed with a grouping of clear decorative vases that catch the light from the flames.

Moving past the fireplace, large windows line the wall of a kitchen dining area, in which an island that combines both cooking and dining functions is centric.

A shining chrome cooker hood crowns the kitchen island with dining extension. A stainless steel sink is located in the middle of the island’s wooden worktop.

Sliding doors open the kitchen up to a terrace, which runs the length of the kitchen diner and relaxation space.

Just off the mezzanine, a modern home office setup resides in its own private room.

The private bathroom is accessed via the bedroom.

Guest cloakroom facilities, on the gallery floor, have an edgy industrial vibe.

Bifold glass doors open up the entire front of the building. Visitors of busy exhibition openings can overflow out to the street foyer, on a wide sidewalk that belongs to the city and the department.

When an exhibition can flow freely between interior space and the street, potential visitors of the exhibition may pass by and peruse without filter. The area becomes a social platform where people can mingle in the comfort of the open air street, instead of being boxed inside the covered gallery.

The clever design configuration has resulted in the ultimate balance between separation and mingling of functions. The result is a fun space that can be open to the public, yet still offer the necessary privacy where it is needed.

At 7 they were all awake and hyperactive ready to leave, had breakfast and got in the car, for the occasion Rice had booked a limousine similar to the one that had gone to take it for the trip, big and pink this time instead of champagne in the minibar were juices and drinks, the only constant was the fruit covered with chocolate, Disney was a couple of hours of cars that flew between laughter and jokes, Roby took out of the backpack the princesses' wigs all burst out laughing, they divided the precious booty and getting ready to make their triumphal entry into the park, Simo was the most excited of the group, he had always liked to behave like a VIP, Rice had reserved the suites in the best hotel in the park, had special passes that gave access practically to everything and a couple of escorts ready to fulfill any wish they had, it was heaven, or it would have been for Y/N if her mind had not been addressed to the camper in the woods and the arms of Tom who had held her two nights before, had put the man's shirt back on and blessed with his perfume, distracted by the memories, did not notice that the car had stopped, a park attendant was waiting for them

"Poppy are you still among us?" Rice asked, smiling at her "We have come with a beautiful smile and go"

Y/N answered the smile and followed his friend, the rest of the family was jumping out of the car

"Well arrived if you want to follow me we prepared a nice breakfast in the castle" the clerk led the way he followed him trying to ignore the looks of the other guests in the park, with the wig on his head no one had recognized Rice, someone was taking pictures, it was so strange to be on the side of the hunted animal now they understood what Rice felt sometimes or why some VIPs reacted badly, the group tightened and entered the castle hall reserved for them, everything was perfect the table was set and the waiters were waiting, they sat down and had breakfast before seeing the rooms and dividing the beds.

Y/N, Rice, Phil, Gian and Roby settled in the Merida suite, a riot of green and tartan, as in the cartoon it looked like the room of an old Scottish castle, complete with a fireplace and carpet in the shape of a very soft and furry bear. the linen was styled with the rest, the green and blue tartan dressing gowns were warm and comfortable, a fruit basket showed off on the living room table, the boys were fascinated by all that luxury, it was normal for Rice to live like this when he was away from home and even Y/N was immediately used to that kind of pampering, again she missed Tom and the suites where they had spent so many good moments, decided to send him a message, a simple "hello" nothing compromising or honeyed, put the phone back in the bag and went back to the hall where the others had joined them wearing the blue robes of Cinderella's room,

"Friend you know you can organize things!" Simo was euphoric, "Make a really beautiful life, limousune, luxury hotel..I'm envious to know"

"Simo I assure you that I could go back, it's all very beautiful and flashy but when I'm around my life does not belong to me, for now it's fine that no one has recognized me but I do not think we'll be so lucky every day that we'll be here" Rice answered seriously,

"Let's not think about Lucifer now, let's enjoy the park and hope not to come paparazzati and slammed on some stupid magazine" Y/N embraced him "Where do we want to start the tour?"

"Poppy phone .." Gian was taking the phone of the woman from the bag ".. hello? .." he said answering ".. a second that I call .." attracted the attention of her friend, Y/N moved from the group in ferment asking who he was, "A certain Will .." Gian said passing the device the woman's eyes lit up,

"Hi" was the only thing he could say

"Hello, beautiful i bother?" Tom's warm voice on the other side melted her,

"Absolutely not Will, wait a second to change room .." Y/N went into the room and closed the door behind her, ".. I'm sorry, but the others make a hellish noise"

"Are you hanging around with your family?" he asked curiously,

"Yes, Rice arranged a couple of days at Disney before saying goodbye" she answered falsely cheerfully, "The holidays are over for everyone it's time to go home"

"Do not stay in Paris?" he asked. "Let's finish shooting in a few days and I was hoping to take advantage of your hands before leaving for filming at the studios", Y/N did not know what to say, she would like to see him again and put her hands on him again but had the holidays lasted too long, not to be accountable to some superior or boss, she worked with other girls and each was head of herself,

"I would like to Thomas but I have to go back to my life, Rice leaves for I do not know which part of the world Monday I can not be still around the house" was aware of the lie he was saying for Rice would not have been a problem if it remained, in fact it would have been more than happy, but had to put an end to those holidays so intent if it was special, it was not his world had to come back down to earth, someone knocked on the door,

"Coming guys" she said aloud,

"Do they claim darling?" the man asked

"They stop to start the tour, I do not I love the rides but see them happy fills me with joy" Y/N laughed

"Then I let you go, we soon feel darling", the woman greeted and returned to the room where the group was ready to go out, as always the phones left as she did not climb on the attractions, they closed the door behind and followed the chaperone.

The park was crowded but once out of the castle no one paid any attention to them, or almost, sometimes they noticed some curious people taking pictures while not understanding who he was hiding under the wig and dark glasses, they were fascinated by the princesses' parade before heading for the 3D roller coaster, when Y/N came the nausea knew she was still tied to a seat but the images of the viewer gave the sensation and being suspended on a volcano before being thrown down into the lava, the adrenaline rushed in rivers all screamed and laughed after 5 endless minutes were released from the seats and the woman gave a stomach, for her was too much,

"Not even on those fake can you resist??" Marco teased, Phil passed a bottle of water the assistant promptly asked if he needed help,

"I'm fine thanks, I was hoping they would not bother me but I was wrong" she said "Too bad the breakfast was very good" laughed wiping her mouth and drinking before following others to a new attraction, seen those that had happened shortly before she decided to wait for them at the end of the race, would not have survived the real roller coaster, felt the stomach at the sight alone Phil kept her company,

"You do not have to make me nutshell Phil I'm fine now" smiled at his friend leaning on his shoulder

"I know you're okay, you've repeated so much, I almost believe it" he said putting his arm around her shoulders, "Before the hotel was he on the phone right?", Y/N nodded, "Honestly .. how are you? We're just you and I will not tell anyone .. "

"Really Phil I'm fine, now that I'm with you, here in the paradise of joy I can not feel bad do not you think?" the woman answered, "I think the worst will be when I will go back home and there will be no bearing to distract me "

"And if instead of going home I would come to London with me a few days? Or do you have to go back for work?"

"I've had a month off I would not want my clients to get attached to my co-workers it's time to come back to real life "she laughed, "Anyway I promise I'll come see you as soon as I can, you know it was always my dream to go to the theater in London" she answered grateful for that invitation, when the group joined them were still tight in a hug, as with Gian did not need to talk to understand each other,

"Hey happy couple we thought to take a break and look at Mulan in the central theater, we have reserved seats," Rice said taking Y/N by the hand, "So your stomach will be okay to have lunch," he whispered, the woman smiled at him,

"But Simo's? Did you leave it tied to the seat?" she asked not seeing him, Roby replied that he was waiting for the photos and that he would reach them in the theater, followed the chaperone to the theater passing a cake stand and Y/N began to jump, dragged Rice with her as ran towards the cotton candy, rather than candyfloss was a colorful flower-shaped masterpiece, although she was ill was happy as a child, fascinated by the mastery of sugar Rice burst out laughing,

"You're not grown for sugar yarn?" he teased, passing her a colorful stick, the woman thanked him, observing that wonder,

"This deserves to be kept ... a beautiful smile Poppy" Roby was taking a picture of her,

"Seeing see" hopped Y/N, the friend turned the phone, in the picture the woman laughed, her eyes bright while biting sugar, the stick was huge and made it seem small in proportion, "Please pass me it is beautiful," laughed cheerfully while jumping hand in hand with Rice, adored cotton candy the friend had given her a home machine to do that it pulled out to every dinner, they came to the show and got comfortable in the assigned seats waiting for the start of the show, Simo joined them just before the curtain got up.

It was like being in the cartoon, the sets were beautiful and the actors were wonderful, they sang all the songs and had fun like crazy, as Rice had expected at the end of the show Y/N was hungry and asked if they could eat something, the companion led the way to the nearest restaurant Belle and the Beast welcomed them making them sit in the mezzanine VIP, lunch attended to skits taken from the film, Niko was involved in a ballet with the teapot that made them laugh a lot, the food was great and the trolley of sweets seemed f they were perfect and colorful desserts, pink meringue seemed a cloud and tasted of paradise, it was one of the best things they had eaten, fortunately even the coffee was great, they were going out when a group of girls came up

"OMG RICEEEEEEEEEEE" the screaming group had recognized him, Rice half smiled and greeted politely,

"How beautiful you are..” said one, "Do you give me the autograph on the tits?" another was inserted, the family was stunned for all those attentions to his friend, they looked at each other not knowing what to say or do, Rice kept calm, took pictures and signed autographs before greeting the girls and return to others,

"I hope you do not become a nightmare this day, sorry," he said as they moved to the little train to make the park tour, "I would not have to call the bodyguards to be comfortable "

"Do not worry we'll take care of the loving hordes" laughed Marco putting himself you look at him with a serious look and hands on his hips, the others imitated him ringing him with protective, "But you're witty boys, no really very witty," said sarcastic blushing, "When you finish doing the stupid train waiting" he picked up Y/N, who was still laughing at the hand and marched briskly to the station, in the reserved wagon they found sweets and champagne waiting for them, they got comfortable and enjoyed the ride, from the top of the rail you could see everything, Y/N sent the photo to Chris who replied shortly after

"And you have not yet seen the Jungle Book area," he answered, holding her close to him, the train ride lasted almost 2 hours, they saw the whole park and went into confusion, there were too many things to do and see and it was by now evening they decided to watch the fireworks in the lake of the galleon of Captain Hook, they enjoyed the spectacle of the battle the great pyrotechnic finale took their breath away, they returned to the destroyed hotels and happy, when Rice opened the door of the room was greeted by a yellow flash, on the table in the living room showed off a huge bunch of sunflowers.

A Studio Loft Which Is A Home And Art Gallery

Located on a quiet street that is parallel to a busy boulevard in Alsancak, one of the most densely populated neighborhoods of Izmir, Turkey, stands an unusual interior conversion. Originally the brief called for the ground and upper floor of this building (which is part of a five story block of flats) to be made into a dedicated photo studio only. During the course of the design process, the client and architect teams Zaas, and Yerce, reimagined the space and agreed that this could go beyond being just a studio. The end result is a unique place that encompasses a home, a professional photo studio, and a public art gallery.

Located right at the back of the first floor, there lies a private living area. A ceiling tv mount allows a flat screen television to be suspended in front of the window glass, which has a view out onto the quiet street.

A double workspace also resides inside the living room, with the desk pushed up against an internal glass wall, looking out. A trio of floating wall shelves hold some books and pictures.

An unusual feature wall lines the opposite side of the living room, behind a run of white base units. Ambient lighting glows from behind the cabinets to illuminate the installation.

The residential first floor is reached via a floating staircase design from the photographic studio and gallery space. Each step is a metal 3D parallelogram frame, mounted individually to the studio wall to form the ascent to the mezzanine platform. The modern handrail design is lit by LED strip lights.

Just beneath the lip of the mezzanine, a guest reception desk is situated by a small storage wall with a bright yellow niche. A black accent chair rocks in the centre of the studio space on the ground floor, offering a spot to relax between photo shoots.

A small side table, beside the black and wood lounge chair, provides a spot to put down a mug of coffee during work breaks – or even to burn a relaxing candle on. The chair and its partner are positioned toward the view of the peaceful street, seen through huge black framed glass doors.

A grey gallery wall jags around the opposite side of the studio to the staircase. Perimeter lighting beams along its upper and lower edge. A work table is set up behind the guest reception desk, in front of a kitchenette and the door to the gallery’s bathroom.

Just beyond the landing at the top of the floating staircase, there is a relaxation area with a flickering modern fireplace and two comfortable contemporary armchairs. At design stage, the question was raised as to how a simple department could be transformed into a multifunctional area where different functions and settings for life could coexist. Solutions were sought to establish permeability within these functions, to create free flow between use and life.

The first floor landing joins with industrial style platform, which is a walkway to a home library area. Because one of the main objectives of the remodel was to maximise creative space for a photo studio, the mezzanine and first floor are designed to serve as extra space for photographic shoots if desired. The functions of working, living, exhibiting all intertwined under the roof of a photographic studio come together to fashion a ‘loft’ kind of lifestyle.

A chunky stone hearth underlines the modern fireplace in the relaxation area. The hearth is dressed with a grouping of clear decorative vases that catch the light from the flames.

Moving past the fireplace, large windows line the wall of a kitchen dining area, in which an island that combines both cooking and dining functions is centric.

A shining chrome cooker hood crowns the kitchen island with dining extension. A stainless steel sink is located in the middle of the island’s wooden worktop.

Sliding doors open the kitchen up to a terrace, which runs the length of the kitchen diner and relaxation space.

A jungle of plants line the long terrace.

Just off the mezzanine, a modern home office setup resides in its own private room.

The private bathroom is accessed via the bedroom.

Guest cloakroom facilities, on the gallery floor, have an edgy industrial vibe.

Bifold glass doors open up the entire front of the building. Visitors of busy exhibition openings can overflow out to the street foyer, on a wide sidewalk that belongs to the city and the department.

When an exhibition can flow freely between interior space and the street, potential visitors of the exhibition may pass by and peruse without filter. The area becomes a social platform where people can mingle in the comfort of the open air street, instead of being boxed inside the covered gallery.

The clever design configuration has resulted in the ultimate balance between separation and mingling of functions. The result is a fun space that can be open to the public, yet still offer the necessary privacy where it is needed.

Piet Mondrian Inspired Interior Design To Give Your Home The De Stijl Flair

To appreciate the Mondrian look, let’s take a look at the De Stijl artistic movement: Dutch for “The Style” (aka Neoplasticism, “the new plastic art”) the Dutch body of work spans from 1917 to 1931. Strictly speaking, De Stijl works within constraints of only primary colours and non-colours, vertical and horizontal line compositions and strong asymmetricality to achieve pure abstraction. Though painter Piet Mondrian is perhaps most popularly known, the group was rich with artists and architects. The works of De Stijl went on to influence the Bauhaus style and cubism in interior design. Here, we’re featuring four homes that pay homage to the Mondrian style, plus a selection of other inspirational rooms decorated in the theme.

Visualizer: Daria Zinovatnaya   Straight horizontal and vertical lines, plus square and rectangular forms were key in the De Stijl movement, however curved lines were not completely unseen. This lounge decor presents a beautiful balance between the two by accentuating an arched doorway in primary colour paint–an easy way to bring a little Mondrian flavour into your scheme. More contrasting curves are introduced through coffee tables, chairs and abstract pattern in the rug.

An area of ‘non-colour’ is fashioned as a panel of black and white diagonal stripes over a compact one-wall kitchen. The black and white feature wall is accessorised with a black swing arm wall lamp. A circular chandelier adorns the centre of the room.

Another curvaceous light is suspended over the dining combination of mismatched chairs. At first glance, the dining table appears to be impossibly balanced on the point of a triangular leg formation, however, the other side of the table reveals a support. The De Stijl works always avoided symmetry, and instead found aesthetic balance by use of opposition. This embodies the second meaning of ‘stijl’ that is “a post, jamb or support”. The rectangle of tile below the table makes a practical cubist flourish that’s easy to mimic.

A partially dividing wall sections an ensuite bathroom from the master bedroom. The half height wall is topped with cubist framing holding panes of obscured glass. You could commision one of these for any space with the help of a capable carpenter or metalworker.

The opposite side of the cubist dividing wall acts as a headboard feature wall for a double bed. Again the bold colours of the room are balanced out by a black and white feature piece, this time in the form of a monochrome bedroom armchair.

Floating rectangular bedside units are reminiscent of the De Stijl group’s three-dimensional works where vertical and horizontal lines are positioned in layers or planes that do not intersect, allowing elements to exist independently and unobstructed.

When implementing a Mondrian inspired interior design, always keep neighbouring colours in high contrast, and intersperse with black, white and grey.

Visualizer: Elena Oberemok   In our second home interior of the Piet Mondrian style, a children’s’ room follows the primary colour rule more rigidly. Primary colours have always worked well in kids’ rooms due to their simplistic nature and high energy look.

The modern workspace in the room is a graphic and crisp interpretation of Mondrian paintings, with black lines forming intersections for colour fills and negative space. The cubist style is easily translatable into work areas that include storage: Simply install black unit carcasses, worktop and shelving, then select cupboard doors in red, blue, yellow and white colourways.

Finish the look with a primary colour chair.

Designer: DARgroup   Visualizer: Notoo Studio   In our third home with De Stijl flair, timber battens have been applied to interior walls to divide into eye-catching cubist sections. The battens have been painted in red, and mounted on blue and white walls; black framing in this style would give a cool monochrome look that could also be filled in with intermittent sections of colour. In this instance, black notes come into the scheme via a 4 poster bed and matching black side table.

In some areas of this home, the red framing stands independently of the walls in a 3D effect. The dining space is like a living Mondrian painting, with objects reduced to their simplest form.

Mondrian wrote, “this new plastic idea will ignore the particulars of appearance, that is to say, natural form and colour. On the contrary, it should find its expression in the abstraction of form and colour, that is to say, in the straight line and the clearly defined primary colour”.

Visualizer: DAR group   Our last cubist home interior is located in Chernivtsi, Ukraine, and contains perhaps the most adaptable ideas of the four.

A simple black display shelf is backed in the instantly recognisable primary colours of Neoplasticism. The adjacent kitchen is bold in colour and contains black framed wall units.

A special installation of shelving has been fashioned as volumes suspended from a ceiling support. The cubes hold a selection of indoor plants and glassware above a breakfast bar. Over in the lounge, a circular large wall clock contrasts with the straight lines. De Stijl was a collective of ideas. Here are some more artistic ideas collected by us to help inspire Mondrian home style in all different kinds of rooms…

Source: Joy Me   This is a luxury yacht interior that uses relatively minor touches to create a big impact. One yellow bed, a cubist pattern rug and a few black lines on the walls with a single blue section is all it took to create this stand out scheme.

Source: Bravacasa   This double bedroom features a Mondrian style headboard wall and bedroom rug to complete the look. The black border around the duvet cover and pillowcases makes a perfect accompaniment. The same effect could be created by sewing your own black trim onto a plain white bed set.

Source: Villa Mondrian   If you’re not sure about committing fully to a Mondrian medley, then you can still enjoy the cubist aesthetic with a smaller panel above the headboard, and simply dress your bed with a primary colour bed throw over a basic white duvet. Accessorise with a contrasting square cushion. This bedroom has the added benefit of existing black framed windows and doors to tie in with the look.

A Mondrian headboard decal is a quick way to bring the theme into a bedroom. Alternatively, a fabric cubist headboard can be created with squares and rectangles of primary colour stitched onto a white base. Finish with lengths of black trim.

Designer: KNQ Associates   This bedroom explores the relationship between positive and negative elements in an arrangement, using a cool extruded ceiling design and wall units. Recessed LED strip lights highlight the edges.

Designer: Suzy Harris   This scheme encompasses both a headboard wall and a work desk area. A blue window blind, yellow desk chair and blue and yellow bedding complete the effect.

50 Ideas To Decorate The Wall You Hang Your TV

Entertainment walls have become an important living room feature, and now provide stiff competition for the traditional feature fireplace. TV lovers want their box in pride of place to achieve the optimum viewing angle, so increasingly the lounge fireplace is being bumped to a side wall or corner adornment. This interior reshuffle leaves space to imagine a new living room feature wall with the TV at its centre. It also presents extra requirements for storage of receiver and recorder equipment, plus movie media, consoles and games. So how do we achieve a modern vista beautiful enough to take the place of a mantelpiece, and on what do we now display our treasured items?

The TV is mounted to one end of the long console, with the opposite side being used as the ideal place to display a few favourite art prints lit by designer lamps.

Due to the slimline storage space requirements of a media console unit, layouts can get creative. This offset alignment gives the illusion of sliding volumes, pulling away to leave display nooks.

Visualizer: DA Visual   You almost don’t notice the TV in this home beyond the plant stands. Dark window frames balance out the black TV set, and backlit display nooks draw the eye away.

Visualizer: Buro   How’s this for a modern take on wainscoting? Asymmetric geometric panels make a technological pattern over this TV feature wall, with one frame picked out in fluorescent orange.

Visualizer: Alina Puzhak   TVs in the kitchen don’t have to be plonked at the end of a countertop either. This one nestles nicely where a run of wall cupboards have been brought up short. The bright yellow ones above pull the kitchen and the television area together.

Visualizer: Archivizer   Wood finish accent walls don’t have to be flat. This amazing wooden wall has been designed to mimic shattered glass, with each section of wood cut into a shard. The wooden ‘shards’ were then mounted not quite flush, so that each piece would reflect the light at a slightly different angle to achieve the desired effect.
