repost from @amnestyuk:
Last week, 179 healthcare workers from across the UK gathered outside St Thomas’ Hospital to demand freedom and justice for the 179 Palestinian healthcare workers who are detained without charge or trial by Israeli forces.
Among those in secret detention is Dr. Khaled Al Serr, who was taken in March this year from Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis. His family have yet to see him or hear from him.
These healthcare heroes should be saving lives, not facing torture or being criminalised. We urgently call on the UK government to demand the Israeli authorities reveal the whereabouts of these healthcare workers and release them immediately.

Summary:
“Ava hands out affection like it requires no deliberation, as generously as the kindly street hawker a few blocks down from the hospital plops a gratuitously hefty scoop of crispy pork lard on Beatrice’s weekly 车仔面 despite her insistence that it’s more cholesterol than anyone should be consuming in a day, let alone a single meal.”
or: surgeons au, except it’s specifically the universe of a 2019 hong kong drama with multiple mentions of 车仔面 (cart noodles)
CALL FOR ACTION:
at the time of writing, israeli airstrikes have killed dozens in rafah, in the southern gaza strip. rafah is the sole crossing point between the gaza strip and egypt, which is not allowing in palestinian refugees, and rafah is where civilians have gone after being instructed by israeli forces to head south to avoid israeli airstrikes. rafah, now the most densely populated area in the world, is being bombed. this is not self defence — this is not about hamas, nor is it about 7th october. this is murder. this is ethnic cleansing. this is genocide, plain and clear.
here are some ways you can help innocent palestinian civilians:
donate an esim. this helps people in gaza continue to share their experiences with people like you and me. this helps in fighting against the oppression of their voices and prevents authorities from being able to sweep this under a rug and keep the truth hidden.
donate to the palestinian red crescent society (prcs). prcs is part of the international red cross and red crescent movement and is providing humanitarian aid to palestinians. you can find out more about them here. you can also read their emergency appeal launched on 12th december 2023 here.
if it’s safe for you to do so, attend a protest. speak up; use your voice — even raising awareness on social media can make a difference. don’t let the world forget that those in power are allowing this to happen, and that we are all witnesses.

Watch: UK surgeon shares footage from Gaza hospital after deadly Israeli strike
A British doctor has shared footage with the BBC from inside the European Gaza Hospital near the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, moments after a deadly Israeli air strike. Dr Tom Potokar, a consultant plastic surgeon who has been to Gaza 16 times to treat patients, was at the hospital when warplanes dropped six bombs, killing 28 people and injuring dozens. Israel says it was a precise strike…

Repost from @what.they.saw:
My second illustrated interview for this series is of Dr. Perlmutter @markperlmuttermd who was in Gaza earlier this year. When I reached out, he graciously agreed to answer my questions and share his experience.
To create these interviews, I always ask for photos and videos that I can illustrate. The folder Dr. Perlmutter shared had a trigger warning, but I clicked anyway. The first photo I saw was of a table full of children’s bodies. Bloodied and mangled. Maybe they were siblings—I don’t know. I couldn’t look for more than a few seconds. I shut down my iPad and went for a walk.
I didn’t open that folder again.
When I came back and had a bit more control over my emotions, I emailed Dr. Perlmutter to apologize and explain, and he patiently shared a few other photos that weren’t as graphic. It struck me then, as it does now, how privileged I am to have the choice to look away—to sit miles away in safety, shielded from the horrors. Meanwhile, the doctors and nurses remain, risking everything to save lives, and the innocent people of Gaza have no choice but to endure unimaginable suffering, day after day.
Due to restrictions on Dr Perlmutter’s account, I cannot invite him as a collaborator on this post, so I’ve tagged him. These voices deserve to be heard, and if you feel moved to engage and share, please do.

EMERGENCY!🚨Please do NOT scroll!
This is Alia and her son Yasser. Yasser, his mother, his 3 siblings, and his grandparents were displaced from north Gaza after their home was destroyed by the occupation several months ago. They are currently in Rafah, which is now under heavy bombardment by the occupation, and ground forces are closing in.
Tumblr media
Alia, Yasser, and their family have been struggling with hunger and sickness for months. Now, the occupation has illegally launched an aerial and ground offensive on Rafah.
As part of this attack, they bombed the place where Alia, Yasser, and their family were sheltering. A chunk of shrapnel pierced the thin wall of the tent in which all 7 family members are living and struck Yasser in the torso, seriously injuring him. He had to have major emergency surgery to remove the shrapnel from his small body.
Photo 1 shows where the shrapnel entered the tent, photo 2 shows where Yasser was struck, and photo 3 shows the piece of shrapnel after field surgeons recovered it from his torso.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to the destruction of Gaza’s infrastructure and the worsened food crisis, Yasser’s recovery is heavily stymied. Medical infrastructure in Gaza has been almost completely destroyed, and the last functioning medical centers in Rafah are operating at minimal capacity. Yasser cannot get the treatment he needs, and he is in poor condition.
Tumblr media
Alia, Yasser, Alia’s other children, and her parents are trying to evacuate Gaza so that they can reach safety and Yasser can get the treatment he needs.
Rafah Crossing is still closed, but once it reopens, we want Alia, Yasser, and their family to evacuate. However, they are still very far behind their goal.
Please help this family find safety. If you cannot support them directly, please reblog this post, and repost this link (https://gofund.me/328c6d35) across your social media accounts.
Alia provided a full breakdown of costs on the campaign page.
Thank you
Thank you to @el-shab-hussein for verifying

700 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours and the airstrikes are more violent each night. Gaza's hospitals have fuel left for two more days. Israel only allowed aid into Gaza on the condition they didn't carry fuel. The Indonesian hospital has shut down already, because doctors have no supplies and no choice but to let the wounded die. They're calling it a collapse but the term doesn't do it justice.
Over a 100 incubator babies are at risk. There are 50.000 pregnant women in Gaza right now, and 5.500 due to give birth this month. Menstruating people are taking pills in order to stop their periods, because they do not have pads or water to maintain hygiene. Surgeons are operating without anesthesia. Water is not reaching Gazans because there's no electricity or fuel for water pumps.
There's no excuse for this. Israel justifies the airstrikes by saying they want to destroy Hamas infrastructure and release the hostages, but they have refused to negotiate for their release. Hamas informed Israel they wanted to release two elderly women without anything in return, and Israel refused. Netanyahu said they wouldn't take their own civilians back because it was "mendacious propaganda." When the hostages were finally released, Netanyahu prohibited the hospital from giving press releases. Yocheved Lifshitz went behind their backs and talked to the press anyway, saying she was treated very well by Hamas, but the government abandoned them. They're being used as straw men. Israel is conditioning the entry of fuel to the release of hostages and yet, according to The Wall Street Journal, when Hamas proposed to exchange 50 hostages for fuel they denied. IDF officials have said they fear the release of more hostages because that might withhold the order to their ground invasion. They do not care as long as they can use the hostages as a pretext for their slaughtering.
There's a turning tide for Palestine in public support. Support for Israel was built through decades of propaganda and we are making a dent into it. Zionists are desperate, holding zoom meetings to promote zionism, but we have to do so much more. We have to shame people in power into supporting the Palestinian cause.
Keep yourself updated and share Palestinian voices, looking to inform yourself from the sources. Palestinians have asked of us only that we share, tweet and post, over and over. Muna El-Kurd said every tweet is like a treasure to them, because their voices are repressed on social media and even on this very app. Make it your action item to share something about the Palestinian plight everyday. Here are some resources:
Al Jazeera
Anadolu Agency
Mondoweiss
Boycott Divest Sanction Movement
Palestinian Youth Movement
Mohammed El-Kurd (twitter / instagram)
Al-Shabaka (twitter / instagram)
Mariam Barghouti (twitter / instagram)
Muhammad Shehada (twitter)
Motaz Azaiza (instagram) - reporting directly from Gaza
Take action. You can participate in boycotts wherever you are in the world, through BDS guidelines. Right now, they are focusing on boycotting (don't be overwhelmed by gigantic boycott lists. Only boycott additional brands if you can):
Carrefour
HP
Puma
Sabra
Sodastream
Ahava cosmetics
Israeli fruits and vegetables
Push for a cultural boycott - pressure your favorite artist to speak out on Palestine and cancel any upcoming performances on occupied territory (Lorde cancelled her gig in Israel because of this. It works.)
If you can, participate in direct action or donate. Palestine Action works to shut down Israeli weapons factories in the UK and USA, and have successfully shut down one of their firms in London. Some of the activists are going on trial and are calling for mobilizing on court.
Call your representatives. The Labour Party in the UK had an emergency meeting after several councilors threatened to resign if they didn't condemn Israeli war crimes. Calling to show your complaints works, even more if you live in a country that funds genocide.

Ex-NHS surgeon Nizam Mamode broke down as he told the international development committee what he witnessed when working as a surgeon in Gaza.
Q: You believe it was deliberate targeting of civilians? A: Absolutely no question in my mind and I and it's been uh it's been the experience of so many healthcare workers who've documented it time and time and time again um but my personal experience and those of my colleagues was this was clearly persistent deliberate targeting of civilians and I've worked in a number of conflict zones um in different parts of the world I was there at the time of the Rwandan genocide um I've never seen anything on this scale ever and that was also the view of all the experienced colleagues that I worked with um one of the surgeons in my team had been to Ukraine five times and said this is 10 times worse normally in a conflict Zone you would have a front line have fighting going on between um two sets of forces and you might get some civilians injured in in that um in that exchange there doesn't seem to be a front line there just seems to be 1.4 million people trapped they can't leave and having bombs dropped on them on a daily basis and then drones coming in and shooting them and um and there's plenty of evidence um out there uh from from Israeli soldiers that that's what's going on but we saw it you know we saw the results of it
Dr. Mamode talks about how they are running out of supplies to operate and how they used the last of their shunts - device used to bypass artery in the neck to supply blood to the brain - on a three year old shot deliberately in the neck by an IDF drone. The 3 year old died 4 days later from infection because they don't have the medicines either.
