Descending Stories has the sort of female character paradox you find from a lot of women authors. Miyokichi and Konatsu both suffer under the structures of patriarchy, Miyokichi having to play the role of a woman to a T and Konatsu being barred from the role assigned to a man. There’s still no comfort for them in what they try to do.

Bon at least has some catharsis in his (?) gender troubles. He can’t play the role he wants to but he can still be a performer, he can’t have the man he wants or the woman he wants to be, but he has his work. Konatsu is denied her work and has the man (an echo of him) that Bon wanted foisted off on her. Miyokichi is stuck catering to men until the end, her attempts to find a sort of freedom with the unmanly Kiku lead her down the path to a much more power-locked partnership with Sukeroku. What’s the mark she makes? Konatsu can never take the stage once she’s grown and Miyokichi isn’t even allowed to have purpose in death.

is your version of Bon's father (Paul) similar personality-wise to Bon's canonical father? If not, what is his personality like? im rlly curious.....

Hiii (⁠ㆁ⁠ω⁠ㆁ⁠), thanks for the question, I actually wanted to talk about this but I didn't find a way how, so here it goes!

The simple answer is like, not really?

Paul is more of the stoic type, so he's not going to be as loud and aggressive as Bon canon dad. BUT the relationship between him and Bon would be somewhat the same.

I mean it like that dynamic they have where Bon is somewhat trying to be accepted by his dad, by appealing to what he sees as correct and hiding the things he knows would be "incorrect", while still visibly rebelling at times, even if it's just the small things. Though adapted to how my AU Bon behaves

Examples Ig:

If in the series Bon rebels from his dad by using his funny sleeve when he's on his own, the AU version would be Bon refusing to use glasses despite what Paul says.

+ I think that Paul would also be a bit homophobic, but in that way where ppl just never questioned it (plus the fact that he doesn't try to get involved w Bon's life). So, sometimes he would say something out of pocket, and Isa had to cut him out

(if it's worth anything, Paul eventually slowly unlearns his prejudices and starts to get closer to Bon)
