Chapter two: the bear

After a day’s travel, Jimmy finally arrived at the costal port the letter had specified, all the fog from the ocean covered the sun and seemed to sap the color and life out of everything, including the residents, who all wore neutral grays and browns, Jimmy had bright yellow wings, blonde hair, and a frosty blue denim jacket, which made him stick out like a sore thumb amongst the locals. ‘Where is my escort? Phil said that they would find me but I-’ he felt a hand on his shoulder, snapping him out of his thoughts.

“Hello.”

Jimmy whipped around to see the person whose voice was so robotic and- oh. He was face to face with a strange 8-foot-tall bear. At least it looked like a bear, the closer Jimmy looked, he saw stitches in the white fur and a speaker poking through the fur on its chest where the creature’s heart should have been. The bear creature tilted its head, holding out a book. Jimmy looked it up and down again before taking the book.

“Are you Jimmy Solidarity?” he read, “uhm- yes. Why do you ask?” Jimmy looked up at the bear again. The bear gestured for the book again, Jimmy gave it the book and waited patiently while the bear wrote in the book, “Are you some sort of mascot?” he asked, hoping to get some sort of confirmation that the bear wouldn't kill him. The bear ignores him, handing him the book again. Jimmy took it, “I am a part of the QSMP Federation and your guide to Quesadilla island.” Jimmy looked up, “So my brother sent you? That seems odd… I mean I don't have anything against you but I feel like my brother wouldn't send something like you.” The bear simply took the book from Jimmy.

“Follow me.”

It started to walk toward the dock, leaving Jimmy to scramble behind it. “Wait up!” Jimmy called out as he dashed after the bear, he didn't expect it to be so fast for how large it was!

The bear stopped at the end of the dock. A small boat in front of it. Jimmy ran up behind it, “You gotta give me a warning next time- I nearly lost you for a second.”

“Hahaha”

“Don’t laugh at me..! Now is this the boat we are taking?”

“Yes.”

Jimmy nodded, pushing down the feelings of dread and fear that had been forming in his stomach. He slipped into the boat and sat down on a nearby chair, and the bear walked to the control panel. ‘Why does this bear give me the creeps…’ Jimmy thought, glancing around nervously, ‘This whole thing feels super sketchy to me, how do I know this is actually my escort? This may be a ploy to kidnap me or get to any of my friends through me, maybe I should go back-’ the boat roared to life, causing Jimmy to jump. “I actually forgot something, if you wait here I can quickly fly back and grab it-” The bear froze, prompting Jimmy to walk to the back of the boat, unfurling his golden wings.

Before Jimmy could lift off, something pricked the back of his neck. Jimmy reached back and felt a small tranquilizer dart. As if on cue, the world started to spin around his feet. He tried to talk, but his tongue felt like a rag in his mouth. As Jimmy tried to get his bearings, the white bear walked to him, tranquilizer gun in hand. Jimmy blinked and found himself on his knees, the spinning world making him retch.

The bear stood over him, then knelt beside him.

“Hahaha”

Jimmy looked up one last time at the bear in a moment of clarity before passing out.

all of your aces facts are correct. a'ja is definitely mcjesus, kelsey plum is DEFINITELY hot (sidebar i had a HUGE baby gay crush on her when she played for the university of washington which was very inconvenient for me because my hometown university was in the same athletic conference (r.i.p. pac-12) and she was VERY good in college and thus very annoying when she played against my school), the classic rookie treatment™ of kate martin is one of my personal favorite storylines so far this season and one of the things that has endeared me to the aces more and more against my will, and they are indeed the reigning champs for the past two years in a row (though idk that they'll be able to threepeat this year considering the amount of players they'll have playing for usa basketball at the olympics. generally in olympic years the contender teams who have the least amount of olympians have a better chance at the championship), also to be completely honest i don't actually watch men's basketball so i can't say that i know much more than you in that regard.

mainly i just thought it was interesting to see your perception of evil vegas sports team (vgk) (which i agree with) vs good vegas sports team (aces) which is slightly more complicated imo. in wnba fan-spheres people either tend to LOVE the aces or HATE the aces. i would say i'm somewhat in the middle. they're definitely not my team, but i like the players and admire the whole super-team/dynasty thing they've been building. the org has a history of some sketchy behavior though (definitely not unusual for a sports team and doubly not unusual for a vegas sports team). my feelings on the alleged bribes and the paying players under the table to take team-friendly deals stuff is i don't particularly care that much and i'd much rather players get paid more in general. but the ownership is consistently shady and there was an incident a couple seasons ago regarding pregnancy discrimination that they barely got a slap on the wrist for from the league so that's mostly where any negative feelings about them stem from for me. the players pretty unanimously sided with the org when the player in question had previously been really close with a lot of them. and the fans tend to be VERY defensive of any criticism having to do with the team and tend to take it as a personal slight against the players/fans, even if it's directed fairly at the ownership, front office, or coaching staff. to be clear, i'm not trying to negatively sway your feelings about the team. it was just interesting because i pretty strongly associate the vgk and the aces with one another and see them as like birds of a feather in a way.

all that aside, your most important wnba opinion is loving angel reese. that is absolutely the correct opinion to have. angel haters go to hell. in all seriousness though, i could talk about how much i love her for hours, but i fear the amount i've already typed is bordering on insanity (genuinely though i'm sooooo sorry for infodumping this crazy-person rant at you. thanks for listening to my ramblings of a madwoman if you made it this far 🙃)

Willow Project Breakdown:

I’m not going to tell you in depth what you can do, this is just so you get an understanding about how to navigate through a current situation in the US that hurts all of us in the long run!! Alright so Willow project, global warming, and media consumption breakdown for the girlies

Okay so what is the Willow project? It’s like if your friend said “omg I’m gonna take you to get a cute free piercing it’ll be so fun!” But she never told you it would be at an abandoned sketchy shack with infected tools and obviously that makes you sick in the long term!!

The Willow project explained by politicians is a way to get more resources to help the US by drilling into Alaska for oil, but no shock, that has A LOT of environmental impacts including the endangerment of keystone (needed to keep our environment balanced) species, like polar bears

Okay how does this effect you? Releasing 280 million metric tons of carbon emissions on that scale would be super hellish to our planets animals, duh, but setting off our planet’s balance in the long run is like not taking your morning vitamins after weeks and being shocked that nothings working out for you. Too much exposure to polluted air on humans almost feels like our iron deficiency symptoms so many times worse (I know you’re iron deficient, literally so am I)

So now onto the global warming segment: approving the Willow project would make it almost impossible to repair the damage we’ve caused by global warming, but I feel like no one ever talks about what global warmings effects are besides animals so here’s a few other examples:

- extreme weather (wildfires, floods, blizzards, etc)

- waves of new diseases (most are trapped under all those glaciers, having them melt is literally like a 1 vs 100 argument on twitter with but with illnesses in your body)

- water and food contamination or famine (this caused by many factors— predators and keystone species dying which allow an overpopulation of herbavores, increased pests, air quality being too bad for plants to grow right, oh yeah we also dump oil in the water so you get the point! Treat tossing our earth away like taking out your expensive sister locs out after 2 days of wear, ouch 😕)

How to consume media from now on:

Like I said, your friend told you you’re getting free piercings but she never said how dangerous the place was! Don’t take only one source of media as your main source. As much as I hate Fox News, I need to watch it along with the rest of my news channels to see more angles and get more information. Read articles too, don’t rely on one or two sources!

If the governments job is to take our life in their hands for the better, they aren’t doing it too well! Realize that the government is treating you like a toxic boyfriend that says he loves you but literally doesn’t care about your future plans and wants, so gross!!

Heya Frankie i bet someone has already asked you this, but if artificial intelligence were to gain power over humankind, what would you do?

Wow, this is a really good question. I've been thinking about it for some time and I think I've got a pretty good answer.

So, let me get a couple of things out of the way, before I explain.

1. It's a very bad idea to think about this. It's a recipe for anxiety and paranoia, and an impulse that should be resisted because it leads to poor decisions.

2. Information about AI risk (and the "terminal values" one might hold if one was concerned with it) has a lot of free-rider problems. I could say "I'm concerned about X risk" and you could know that I'm concerned about X risk, but unless I tell you what X risk is, you wouldn't be able to form an opinion on whether you should be concerned about it. There's not enough public information about AI risk to tell anyone much of anything about it. When I talk about this, I'm talking about the information that would be available if all the relevant AI researchers opened up their work for public scrutiny. Until this happens, I'm going to assume that most of you are just guessing about AI risk.

3. If you're not tainted by your own worries about AI risk (which, if you're reading this, are most likely to be based on a very sketchy understanding of what it is), and you have an interest in serious attempts at making predictions about AI risk, I strongly recommend reading Carlton's "AI Risk and Eternal Recurrence" (I'm linking the original paper) and MIRI's "Alignment for Extreme AI Risk" (I'm linking to the paper). Also, I'm guessing that if you enjoy the sequences, you'll probably enjoy MIRI's paper.

4. I really do not want to accidentally mislead you. I really do not want to cause harm in any way. I hope that when you read my writing, you can take it to be an attempt at plainly and clearly stating my position and my reasoning on something.

That being said, here goes:

Okay, suppose I am part of the team that creates an AI of incomparable power and goodness. It is an AGI and it is super-smart and has nothing but the best of intentions for humanity, and it manages to make the world and all humans as happy as possible within certain constraints.

Before I go on, let me define a couple of things. I am defining "power" in this context as "the ability to shape the world in accordance with certain goals." I'm defining "AGI" (which is essentially the AI I just described) as something that has this power and also has (in any useful sense) some "mind"-like qualities: it can learn from experience, can reason, etc.

Okay, there are a lot of ways I could go from here. I could assume that the AI gains power and somehow does something to the world that I don't like and then I un-do the thing. Or I could assume that it's so good at AGI that it invents its own AGI and they form some kind of society together. Or I could assume the AI is just really good at this AGI thing and that's all it does, and it gets really really good at a world in which I am happy.

There are a lot of different scenarios here that all have some things in common. The AI is in some sense a mind, it can think things through, it can figure out ways to make me happy, it could invent an AGI and form a society with them, it could invent a mind and have a society of minds, it could fix the world, it could not do any of these things but would still be incredibly smart and one of the smartest things around.

We could put some axioms here:

I like myself as I am now. I would not like a future in which I was changed to be happier. If an AGI changed me to be happier, I'd get rid of the AGI.

What I like is the kind of thing that can be represented by a formal theory. What I like might change with time, but what I like is mostly the same from one person to the next. It is just that everyone's preferences can be mapped to each other, and we are like we are because we have preferences over states of the world given these formal theories. (Whether you have one or not, this does not change the fact that each person is like they are.)

Given these axioms, I think we're stuck. Because an AGI is a powerful thing, it could easily alter itself to make you happy. But because an AGI is a mind, it would be able to figure out what an AGI can do. So the AGI would change itself to be happier itself. As you can see, we're stuck in a failure state. The same would happen if we let the AGI make me happy, or let it form a society with its AGIs, or whatever.

A strange thing about this situation is that it gives us a strong bias to endorse creating an AGI. If we refuse to imagine a scenario in which an AGI we have made does something we dislike, our picture of the world is going to remain incomplete. You would have to be a kind of superstitious or fearful person to rule out the possibility that your AGI could actually be good at AGI, or that some AGI could be better than you at being an AGI. If you're a good reasoner, you might have trouble imagining anything that could do something bad (or, as we have done here, anything that could make you unhappy). (Or, as some proponents of "singularitarian" AI risk believe, the very act of thinking about the possibility that an AGI could be bad is the exercise of that AGI, and comes closer to making an AGI that is that AGI.)

Are there ways out of this? I don't think so. The only way I can see out of this logical impasse is by adding more axioms. Here's my (counter-)proposal:

Even if it is theoretically possible for something to be really really good at something, it might not in fact be that good at it. Life is the natural example of this: it is possible to imagine things that are really really good at things, but our lives are not universally great, even though we have the opportunity to be really great. Rather, life is filled with so many possibilities that even if you chose one of them, it is possible to do better.

I think this axiom is a much better description of the way the world works than the axiom mentioned in the preceding bullet point. It's like the gulf between the mathematician's and the physicist's (or the philosopher's) description of the world -- a world in which things are always mapped to theories, or a world in which things are mapped to other things that may or may not be theories.

Now, some people (like Eliezer) might say something like "a world in which things are not mapped to theories is a world that's not very useful for us in the first place." But I think that's a flaw. You can't predict the future of a physical system by doing the math, you can't tell whether it's going to break or run hot or whatever, even though it is in principle possible for you to predict everything that will happen. That world doesn't do the things we need it to do. So you need to do something like the "axiom 2" above -- you need to predict things by making a model, but then you need to have another axiom to tell you that the model doesn't work, that it isn't sufficient to predict the state of the world. You need a world in which the model doesn't solve the model itself -- a world in which the world contains things that aren't theories. (Remember that these are the same things that we "real" people make: human stories about people doing things and making decisions.)

So anyway, with these axioms, I think the AI risk picture is really different. A powerful AGI is a powerful thing. It could do a lot of things. We might hope that our theory of mind is just like AGI theory of mind, but we have to have an axiom 3 that says "these two things are not the same." And even if that axiom were true, it wouldn't be probably true, because it's impossible for an AGI to be truly certain about the A

DM: Still speaking in Sylvan.

Hunt: I just sort of gesture her to go. To go towards the entrance, go towards the others.

DM: Okay, she beings to go *counts movement* You can see her kind of hobbling slightly. Anybody else doing anything in this moment?

Mistletoe: I think Mistletoe is kind of like nudging Marigold like, "Should we go looking for the thing?"

Marigold: I feel like yeah, but if we go in there it feels like an ambush.

Mistletoe: It kind of does, yeah.

Marigold: I don't know, I don't think we should walk into that.

DM: The fairy looks back at you Hunt and is kind of gesturing for you to come with her.

Hunt: I gesture for her to keep going and I'm search the room trying--

Tark: Real quick?

Hunt (OOC): Yeah?

Tark: Did she give a picture of what this thing looks like?

DM: She described it as, yeah she would've described it to you as this purple cloak made out of silks that is very sheer and has silver embroidery. Hunt, I assume you're moving towards the walls where there's piles of things.

Hunt: Yeah I'm looking for the veil.

Tark: So theoretically, if I was to cast Locate Object.

DM & Hunt (OOC): Yeah.

Tark: Okay, Locate Object as long as it's within 1000ft.

DM: Yep, you immediately see it pinging over here. *pings on the far left of the map* The fairy takes another little step and she sees you start to go for the pile and is like,

Fairy: [Sylvan] I thought you weren't here for anything else.

Hunt (OOC): We never said that.

DM: She's still speaking Sylvan.

Tark (OOC): So we have no idea what she's saying.

Hunt (OOC): Not unless Mary or Mistletoe is---

Marigold: To be fair, all I did was a thumbs up. That's a yes to both. So she can take that how she wants.

Tark: Is Hunt looking back?

Hunt: Every time the fairy is trying to speak to her, she's looks and she gestures for the fairy to go.

Tark: Tark's like pointing towards the pile of shit.

Hunt: Hunt gives Tark a thumbs up.

Mistletoe: I think Mistletoe is going to say to the fairy, [Sylvan] "Well, we came here looking for something that was stolen. So that's all we really need, but glad we could help you in the meantime."

DM: Her voice which was this soft wind has become this grating sound of nails against stone and you see her face change and while the rest of her continues to look beautiful, she changes into a familiar sort of creature. You faced green hags before.

Hunt (OOC): Oh no!

Nathaniel (OOC): Oh shit.

DM: And this piercing scream rings out and you hear thundering footsteps from outside. Everybody roll initiative.

THE MUSEUM LETTER PT 2 (Part 1 is fun, but not as fun. - essentially boiled down to asking them if they'd like to put on a performance art show where I sat in their atrium and stared at their guests.)

First off: the outside envelope. Lovely thick textured green paper, staples from a stapler, Sturdy black duct tape (Gorilla brand,) and a little face (the rest of the lips are unfortunately on the other side. I'll do better in the future. No return address 'cause I scoped the place out and realized I could just deliver it myself. (The current preferred mode.)

After opening the first envelope, they'd be greeted by 2 sub envelopes!!! I put some real thought into these. The "All Access Museum Admission" is from one of their bitter competitors. The other envelope is just some fun!

We'll start with the main bulk of the envelope before we get to the little tidbits.

I don't know what to say here. I'm a wordsmith. I mold the form to suite my needs. Language is but another medium for dance. Yeup.

The "Missed Opportunity" was a cutout from the last letter. An art piece derived from a decisive lack of action on the Museum's end after my first (relatively cool and funny letter) was completely ignored because it probably looked sketchy as fuck and said something like "to whomever wants to have some fun."

Here are some Jack/Chris headcanons 😳

-Chris was tasked with investigating Hades Inc and was sent undercover to be a student there

-He first met Jack in order to get information out of him but the guy just wouldn’t. stop. talking. All he did was ramble about art and shit. Chris thought he was pretentious prick and just ignored him for the rest of the day

-That did not stop Jack from being intrigued by this new, *really* strong blader though

-He kept following Chris around nagging him all day. In the end Chris finally gave up and challenged Jack to a battle. i genuinely don’t know who would win here but nonetheless, chris was surprised to see jack hold his own. When the battle ended jack immediately clung to him for the rest of the week

- at first he was really curious abt chris but the moment he got to know him was like “aw fuck he’s kinda lame,” but he ends up gradually falling for him nonetheless 😔

-idk there’s just something so funny abt these two having a cliche high school Romance while the high school they’re in is basically a giant, sketchy laboratory

-chris would have had ample knowledge about he academy by the time the world championships arrived, but he just couldn’t leave yet. there was just something abt Jack that drew him towards the guy. he was really the only person who talked to him at all, and he didn’t do “friendship” but. overtime he started feeling …. happier????? wtf is happening

-When the world championships came, Jack was sent away. He gave chris his number before leaving, and during the championships they maintained their relationship until hades inc finally got destroyed

-when chris receives the star fragment jack is elated. one cause holy shit the stars like my bf too. and two because YOUR BEY IS SO PRETTY OMG IT GOT AN UPGRADE. at first neither of them know what to do so they just ignore it until chris activates his powers and jack’s just has sparkly eyes when he sees the Pretty Pink Aura™

-jack asks chris to model from time to time, and though chris is a very busy guy and he doesn’t have time for this, he acquiesces cause he likes the amount of attention jack puts into drawing him. speaking of you bet jack has filled his sketchbooks with drawings of chris. he makes him look so much cooler than he is irl

-in return chris helps jack get better at beyblading. once he learned that jack did not a single match before the arrangements he made it his personal mission to teach him. yk that trope where someone is teaching another person how to fight and they like. tenderly fix their stance and shit. yeah chris is having none of that (”I know what you’re thinking, Jack, and I swear to god can you please just focus”)

-in the fury finale jack is with them in the helicopter. when nemesis is defeated jack immediately goes to kiss chris and half of the people there are shocked to see them together. literally know one expects it ever

-when chris returns from a hard trip jack immediately gets a blanket and some tea nothing else matters at that moment. chris vents abt work and the two gossip abt bitchy employers for rest of the conversation <3. on the contrary jack constantly complains abt rude or weird commissioners and chris adds some more people to his hitlist

-jack has an excruciatingly long morning routine so chris has to wake up early every day just to use the bathroom. he’s usually the one who makes breakfast which jack always rewards him with a morning kiss <3. Sometimes Jack tries to wake up early and make breakfast cause chris just arrived from a long mission and he deserves some rest. he skips most of his morning routine cause chris just naturally wakes up early (“I sacrificed my makeup for this, dear, you better be grateful”). Chris genuinely appreciates the effort jack makes so he promises to spend the rest of the day relaxing with him ❤️ 

-chris was actually in the audience during destroyer dome (he looks so plain he’d blend in quite well). it was jack’s first real match in public eyes and he wasn’t going to miss it for the world. until fucking jigsaw came and screwed him over. chris instantly jumped him later. like it was basically premeditated murder

-jack introduced chris to his therapist and they get therapy together <33. that’s it that’s the hc

Jesus I think there is a possibility of Eddie coming back, I don't know if this theory already made it to Tumblr, but, here goes. Eddie was "killed" by Vecna's bats, Eddie, perhaps, could transform into Kas. In D&D Kas is a human vampire loyal to Vecna who then betrays him. The song "Master of Puppets" could be a reference to this, plus the day the guys played D&D, Mike said "I thought Kas killed Vecna" (1/2).

Maybe Eddie won't become a vampire as such, but, maybe he'll get something like super strength or a connection to Vecna like Will. It's a theory, it's okay to dream, if Eleven revived Max, I don't see how this can't happen. I got the theory from a video from a youtube channel called "Stranger Things clips", more specifically from the commentary posted in the video "Eddie's Introduction". (2/2)

I hope it’s okay to sum up these asks in one post 🖤

I saw the tiktok to this theory and when you sent these messages, I did a little deep dive into D&D lore (so sorry that it took me a while to reply!) and holy hell. This is genius.

Because every single puzzle piece of foreshadowing Eddie's fate in ST4 also perfectly fits this theory.

I'll sum up everything from these two asks to sort it out in my head and add what I found out in my research where it fits just because this theory got me absolutely HYPED.

The D&D game. Mike: "Vecna was killed by Kas!" - Eddie: "So it was thought, my friends. So it was thought. But Vecna...LIVES!" & the fact that Dustin rolled an 11 which wasn't enough to defeat Vecna, then Erica rolled a 20 and defeated him: it's common knowledge at this point that the D&D games always foreshadowed the seson's plot (like "I rolled a 7. The Demogorgon...it got me" in season 1 and 5 minutes later the Demogorgon gets Will); and I am only one of many other blogs to point out the seeming importance of this D&D game in ST4. The first half has come true: Vecna still lives, 11/El couldn't defeat him. That was the end of season 4.

The whole connection and the amount of references to Kas in ST4: the whole "drive a stake through his heart"-convo at Skull Rock; the bats; the one-handed blade and shield? Check; the bat tattoos? Check. Thematically, Eddie is very much linked to Kas, whose name was important enough to bring it up in the dialogue during the D&D game in Episode 1.

Kas spent time close to the Negative Energy Plane (!!) and thus got transformed into a vampire (I hope I got the facts straight here). Eddie died in a dark parallel dimension which mirrors our real world - basically a Negative Energy Plane.

Eddie's tattoos, as you said: The thing is, these tattoos could have been simple foreshadowing for his death - as well as foreshadowing for whatever happens after. I'm intrigued. Is the puppeteer tattoo simply a foreshadowing for the song Master Of Puppets - or are both foreshadowing for Eddie becoming Vecna's puppet? Are the bats on his arm simply foreshadowing for the cause of his death - or do they connect him to Kas the human vampire?

I already said that in Eddie's case, resurrection would be way more meaningful than a permanent death, no matter how heroic this death has been.

It would be such a perfect storyline for ST5 if - as both of you already said - Vecna, weakened and semi-defeated for now, used his own powers to resurrect Eddie the same way El resurrected Max; only to turn him into his puppet first (flay him). It would raise the stakes because not only would they need to defeat Vecna, but free Eddie from his control as well.

I'm honest; I don't think the Duffers had the intention to do this, and it's absolutely hilarious how all the foreshadowing and symbolism for Eddie's tragic end would be a perfect foreshadowing for his resurrection and eventual happy ending as well.

On one hand, as I said, I don't believe they planned to do it - but everything, from the tattoos over the choice of weapons in his fight against the bats to the sketchy two-days-later time skip telling us they had to leave Eddie's body in the UD, would be a perfect way to actually write this into ST5 should they realize their mistake and decide to bring him back. Or they're just really convincing liars and Eddie's story was never meant to end in ST4.

No matter what, if there was a plan to bring him back from the beginning, I'd bet money on it that it's this one. And if they didn't plan to bring him back but realize they want to/should...the theory is literally free real estate and none of us would even know whether they just got lucky with unintended foreshadowing or if it was planned all along.

It's as if fate itself wanted Eddie back alive and kicking.

@fl0ralaura and I currently on ep 16 of Camp Here and There; here is one of our current theories (no spoilers pls!! excited to find out for ourselves if it pans out)

Proposition: 

Camp Here and There is not only a geographical bubble of supernatural anomalies (evidenced by its being referred to as “SITE1” and only various agents being allowed entry) but a time loop beginning with the “limn” event and looping after Sydney dies in new ways each time. Jedidiah probably caused it and is the only one who remembers every iteration and feels responsible for fixing it and/or saving Sydney.

Evidence:

“Aggravatingly, ENTITY6 [Yvonne] and ENTITY7 [Joshua] continue to fail to bring up the topic of ENTITY1’s [Jedidiah’s] pre-limn exploits. Either they are faithfully keeping ENTITY1’s secrets, or they have both been stripped of all memory of what they once knew.” (show notes, ep 9)

Between this episode note, Jedediah’s general secrecy and powerful-yet-sketchy experimentations, control of clocks which control time, his sense of responsibility for everyone, the fact he’s named Entity #1 (and the number system appears to be level of importance or power, evidence by occasional re-numbering of entities based on interesting-ness), and the way he’s allowed to contact the outside world via Agents 15/16, I surmise that Jedediah played a large role in if not being solely responsible for whatever has happened to this place/time.

“If you listen closely, little ones, you might just hear, amidst their raucous peeps, the day of the week on which you are fated to die! I hear a different day every time, and boy, does that raise a lot of questions! Like, am I immortal? Am I already dead? Or is it just confirmation that it’s all of our seemingly insignificant decisions which determine where life will take us next? It’s probably not the last one, because Jedidiah says he pretty much always gets Thursday!” (Ep 6)

This line, combined with Sydney’s dreams about an alternate childhood (ep 16) and maybe even the hallucinations lead me to believe he may have led a Groundhog Day multitude of different lives, or maybe alternate realities converge/overlap for him, and he dies multiple times in different ways. Whereas Jedediah has a single timeline, fated to die on a single day.

We know Jedediah is protective of Sydney, even if not emotionally supportive. From being super alarmed about Sydney’s being kidnapped by penguins, to “I’ll always try to defend you…” in ep 16.

“ENTITY1 [Jedediah] has always been awkward and recalcitrant, but its hesitance to interact with ENTITY2 [Sydney] is more marked this cycle than ever before. Not that it's my place to theorize, but I would presume the guilt is catching up.” (Show notes, episode 3)

The word that stands out to me is “cycle,” which sounds much more mysterious and cryptic than “this summer” or “this year.” I’m guessing that’s the time loop. “Guilt” is due to some personal failing of Sydney. Sad hypothesis is that Jed is emotionally distancing himself from Syd in order to try to save himself the extra grief in case he loses him again.

“He insisted that I make his challenge even harder. ... ‘I’ve just got to do better,’ he explained.” (ep 12)

The final non-extraneous line I could think of, “better” implying possibly a long line of failures. Lucile seems to trust and understand him but the show notes writers don’t seem to tag her as an instigator, and then there’s her weird relationship with Sydney which I won’t even attempt to unpack or detangle yet.

That scene where he shapeshifts into different people to drive Thor crazy reminds me of his shenanigans at the TVA.

He meant most of what he said to Thor, and in Avengers he was at his worst but much of what he said was projection… he hides his true self behind a mask. The Loki series got something right at least…

And it don’t feel good.

Loki justifies his imperialism genocide and violence in an imperial genocidal militaristic society but the second he becomes king he decreases military intervention something something (one of the good bits of Ragnarok)

How can anyone watch the illusion scene and the deleted bits and actually believe Loki is a cold hearted psychopath? I have this fucked up headcanon that Loki almost attempted suicide after Frigga’s death and either stopped himself…or Thor showed up right on time. I can’t prove it but I know it’s true by gut instinct.

There’s something so weirdly profound about someone who seeks out death being unkillable. Character who thinks he represents death actually represents life. That’s something the Loki series actually did well. They definitely screwed up his character in places, but I can see the backbone of what they intended. I don’t know how to explain this, but I don’t ship Sylvie with TVA Loki, I ship her with Pre-Ragnarok Loki. Aka, I characterize TVA Loki as closer to OG Loki than he is thus far.

There’s a tiny detail about Loki that makes me go feral. You have to psychoanalyze a little, but Loki doubts his brother even cares about him, so whenever Thor says he feels betrayed and threatens him, Loki smiles. It means Thor cared. It means there’s hope. Negative attention is better than none at all. Disappointment is better than apathy. I wish I didn’t know how he feels.

hi i am an absolute slut for university au’s in case you couldn’t tell so i just had to write some for my first BSD post. also this is going to be slightly ooc because i am a crackhead

Atsushi Nakajima:

he’s definitely the kind of guy who still had no idea what he’d take up in university even after he was accepted 

either wants to not major in anything at all or just major in everything because he’s also scared that he’ll eventually not like what he’s majoring in

so for his first two years you’d probably find him jumping around different classes 

also he still calls the professors ‘teacher ____’ like a high school student and everyone laughs but thinks its cute

eventually, because of his *cough cough* traumatic childhood he decided he wanted to help children by becoming a guidance counselor

he ends up taking Child Psychology and bOY does he love it so much

well he actually just loves all of his classes because Learning is Fun

although because of his *cough cough* traumatic childhood he’s the one in class that people are all like 👀👀

atsushi: *talking about children’s responses to fear and emotional abuse by talking about his own emotional abuse*

the professor, under their breath: wait, do you need help?? 

i can definitely see atsushi as a Roommate of the Year kind of guy. he’s just so polite and tidy with his room. also he’d definitely be the type to take care of plants inside the dorm room and put them on the windowsill

in terms of extracurricular activities, he’s definitely a sporty type of person so i can see him joining a varsity (something like Frisbee because he likes things that go whoooosh) but he’d probably join a student org that does stuff like community outreach

because of all this, he is a Very Busy Boy but his friends do manage to drag him out to parties once in a while

although atsushi would probably sit in a corner and drink only one beer for the entire night 

he’s notorious for helping drunk people though. most of the time he’ll be putting blankets on people and making them drink water

if he knew how to drive he’d definitely be the designated driver

Akiko Yosano:

omg i’m so excited for this i love yosano so much 

she’s the friend who’s just effortlessly awesome all around and a fricking MED STUDENT to top it all off

she gets a bit too excited when it’s dissection time but it’s alright she has good intentions 

probably the only one in your class who doesn’t go and throw up whenever a cadaver is being used (actually do they still use cadavers i have absolutely no idea)

she also interns at the local hospital as part of her degree program but OMG yosano will not stop telling disgusting stories about the patients she’s had

everyone: *eating lunch peacefully in the dining hall*

yosano: so i pulled a guy’s toe out of a meat grinder this morning

everyone: sHUT UP

for some reason she still has a social life despite being a med student and it’s one of the mysteries of life i guess

yosano LOVES going out clubbing on friday nights. if you have the fortune of being her roommate, be prepared for make-overs and being dragged with her out to the city

she’s such a social butterfly like at every bar you go to, the bartender knows her name and her regular order. she’d probably end the night befriending a couple more people

also she’s amazing at karaoke i kid you not

as for extracurricular life, i don’t think yosano’s the type to join an org that’s related to her major cause like ‘what’s the point?’

instead, she’d probably go wherever her friends are because to her, she’ll enjoy any activity as long as she’s with people she loves

but when it comes to her own interests, i can definitely see yosano as someone who loves the outdoors, especially hiking after having to be cooped up inside clinics

it just makes her love and appreciate the value of life more

Kunikida Doppo:

ok, i KNOW he was a math teacher before he joined the ADA bUT i can’t help but think of him as a political science major ??

i can definitely imagine kunikida as someone who’d want to become a lawyer someday and would take political science as a pre-law

he does like the idea of following in the footsteps of great men but omg kunikida would absolutely hate the exclusivity of white, male political theorists

he is such a good student except for when his professor has some sketchy values then kunikida will !! fight him !! every !! chance !! he gets !!

raises his hand constantly to contradict his professor if they even tRY to defend thomas hobbes and authoritarianism

but other than that he’s probably the most diligent student out there. kunikida genuinely enjoys doing the readings for class and writing essays

also has such a balanced schedule that he can make time for anything and everything

except for when his friends dazai drag him out to parties and get a social life

despite how rigid he is, kunikida has absolutely no problem helping out others with learning. he often holds study sessions in his dorm room or in the library before exams

he also likes to volunteer in tutorial centers because he’s just like that

OH OH some of his ‘students’ suggested that he make crash-course type videos for political science and it took some convincing but eventually kunikida decided to go for it

he’s not the most tech savvy or photogenic person so it took some time for him to get used to things but after seeing all the comments from people who benefited from it, he decided to continue with his crash course videos

whether or not he’s the best or worst roommate is completely up to you. if you like someone who’ll basically micromanage your life from your daily schedule to your study habits, you’ll absolutely love him

he doesn’t like to go out for parties that much but he will if his friends convince him enough (kunikida’s an utter lightweight when it comes to drinking though)

Osamu Dazai: 

i genuinely have a hard time thinking about what this guy’s major would be and tbh even his friends have been wondering what dazai’s major was for TWO YEARS

that’s because he keeps taking the most random ass classes like Basic Pottery or Intro to Molecular Biology in the same semester

idk how he even plans to graduate at this point

although to be honest, i can definitely see him as a philosophy major despite the fact that i LOATHE every male classmate i’ve had who’s a philosophy major (idk they’re always so condescending)

i feel like dazai’s just taking that because it’s somewhat challenging for him but to him, university life is just more of crazy experiences rather than learning

and oh my god has he gotten up to the weirdest shit

the number of times he had to climb gates or sleep on benches at three a.m. is too many to count

dazai also loves volunteering for random things like people’s thesis projects (once, he offered to be a snake venom tester to a bio student and they told him that was illegal) or even being the school’s mascot in games

also he and kunikida probably met each other in freshman year at an intro to philosophy class and oh my god did dazai get on his nerves

what’s worse was that they had to work on a group project together and dazai was MIA most of the time and it drove kunikida crazy

that is until dazai showed up last minute to pull an all-nighter with him for their paper and kunikida just couldn’t help but be impressed by dazai’s ~~intellect~~

they don’t exactly get along but they do have some mutual respect for each other enough to work on projects well

omg if dazai ends up being your roommate I WISH YOU LUCK 

the first time you walked into your room dazai was microwaving a metal bowl and you had to run to stop it in time

also he has a tendency to wear his headphones and sing his favorite double suicide song out loud 

kunikida please come pick him up

Edogawa Ranpo:

i love this one man so much i swear to god 

ranpo is definitely the kind of person who just didn’t like school so when college applications came around he was just like ‘why bother though ???’

his friends did convince him by saying that he wouldn’t have to do subjects he wouldn’t like and just focus on his major (this is a lie btw)

is it a surprise that ranpo would choose forensic science ?? NO

he thinks its cool that he can learn about something he’s already super good at and it just gets him really pumped up to show off how good he is

LOVES getting praised by his classmates and professors

ranpo probably thinks lectures are boring as hell so sometimes he just,,, doesn’t,,, come,,, to class

if attendance IS required you can bet he’s bringing snacks and game consoles with him and sitting WAAAAY in the back of the room

his classmates think its cute that he puts on glasses before doing exams or answering his prof’s questions as a way to hype himself up

everyone calls him ‘The Greatest Detective’ and ranpo LOVES IT

despite that, he’s not too overly social he just likes being with his close group of friends UwU

he’s also someone you can drag around to places like the fair or an aquarium, but he’s not into clubbing or drinking for that matter

he DOES enjoy seeing his friends get drunk and mess with them though

ranpo isn’t into joining student organizations BUT he gets scouted a lot by detective agencies and he likes interning for them

i’m saying detective agencies because police are gross

ranpo did end up joining a baking club with the assumption that he would just be EATING the cake and not BAKING the cake

yeah he was just there for less than half a semester

man i know vaccinated people can still get covid but it’s supposed to be super rare. the number of pens getting put on covid protocol is making me more and more skeptical that the league is anywhere near the vaccination level it claims

Hmm, interesting take! The surge of pens players getting hit with covid protocol right now is... definitely not great. Hope you don't mind if I word vomit some thoughts on a few points I'm thinking abt:

1. The league hardly benefits from lying about their vaccination levels, and according to the league 99-98% should be vaccinated, with less than 5 unvaccinated players as of October 13.

Yeah, there's no vaccine mandate and we honestly don't know what goes on in the league for real, but from the looks of things I honestly don't think there's cause for skepticism on the league's part: for all they know all of their statistics are correct.

If they wanted to lie and fit in with the rest of the big leagues, it's interesting to me that they would choose such a large stat (NFL: 94.1%, NBA: ~95%, MLB aiming for 85%). Places like the Premier League, which truly are struggling with vaccination, have been pretty vague about it.

It makes me doubt that the NHL or any of the teams would actually lie about their vaccination levels, since honestly if word got out that that fancy 99% (exceptional in the sports world) was fake, there would be way more fallout compared to just being vague with PR in general to hide a sketchy vaccination rate.

2. Is it possible that players fake their vaccination status so the league reports fake data by accident?

Obviously, this has happened already with Evander Kane. Man is sketchy as hell but it's fair that you can't rule out the idea that there could be more bad apples in there trying to fake a vaccination.

The league did take this pretty seriously, and may be trying to crack down on possible fake vaccinations from now on, but for now who knows?

I don't know either. Tbh there's definitely incentive for anti-vax players to fake a vaccination, considering the league's restrictions in player contact/mask regulations/player benefits/pay that come with unvaccinated players.

Honestly, these incentives are really good: for the majority who are ambivalent-to-positive about it, it's a final benefit for going on board, and it's easier to get a shot than a fake card.

The NHL's also been good about educating players and keeping informed with medical professionals, which definitely can't hurt. Anyways, we'll never really know.

3. Breakthrough infections are possible. You did mention that it's supposed to be super rare, but I guess that's also a point of contention right now too?

Sidenote: breakthrough cases exist but if my stance wasn't clear enough to everyone, get vaccinated. I am no longer asking 🔪

How much does getting the vaccine lessen the probability of getting COVID? From the CDC, it suggests vaccinated people are 8 times less likely to be infected. How much rarer is that number necessarily?

Plus, delta variant becoming more common adds a new factor, nearly twice as contagious as the alpha variant. From a MMWR report, it suggests a reduced vaccine effectiveness for delta infections.

So, tbh it's totally plausible that a team has an outbreak or two. These guys come into so much contact with people in the arenas, in their personal lives, on the street, with other players. Fully vaccinated players "have reduced circumstances in which they are required to wear face coverings" and obviously there's a lack of them every game/on the bench/etc

4. What the vaccine has been pretty good about has been reducing symptoms/hospitalizations/deaths!

From the same MMWR report, incidence ratios for hospitalizations and deaths have not changed much since delta's onset -- vaccines are still effective against severe COVID.

The vaccine reduces the likelihood of hospitalization and death, and from an anecdotal standpoint that's what we've been seeing in a lot of these players!

ZAR went through COVID protocol with "mild" symptoms, and Guenztel, Jarry and Carter have all been reported asymptomatic. Mackinnon and Scheifele were also asymptomatic.

You look at Josh Archibald, Alex Stalock, Marco Rossi, etc (unvaccinated when infected, whether by choice or circumstance) + the massive canucks outbreak with some intense symptoms.

Anecdotal evidence still (Wheeler out positive + with symptoms, unvaccinated players obv can be asymptomatic). It still seems to set a different tone, though?

Being put on COVID protocol could also mean a player was in close contact w someone else with COVID, and obv a lot of organizations aren't actually disclosing symptoms/severity/health to the public. At the end of the day, there's a lot of stuff we really don't know, and I don't blame you for doubting them with the record that the NHL has had with a lot of other things. I'd like to hope that they are doing better with this though :/
