I was on the Eiyuden Chronicle discord the other day, when somehow (probably my fault) the convo turned to reminiscing about Suikoden IV.

This lead me to wanting to listen to the Rune of Punishment theme (gorgeous song), which lead me to feeling all the feels - and the sudden urge to paint Lazlo. I think this might be the first time I've ever painted him.

I have a soft spot for Suikoden 4 - Junko Kawano's designs from 1 and 4 were a major influence when I started drawing more. What a treat to see her new art in not one, but TWO new games next year! I can hardly wait!

If you've likewise been living under a rock, as I have, "Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes" is an upcoming 2024 jrpg game created by the same developers as the original Genso Suikoden series! With their newly-formed Rabbit & Bear studio, Eiyuden Chronicle is arguably the spiritual successor to the original Suikoden series. It even has 100+ new character designs by Kawano herself! And if that was not enough, Konami is also making separate HD remasters of the original Suikoden 1 & 2 - with Kawano drawing brand-new art for all the Suikoden 1 character portraits! (Also set to release in 2024.) I only learned about all of this last week. I am very excited (and in slight disbelief by so much Suikoden news, after over a decade of Konami abandoning the series!).

I am obligated to recommend people play the Suikoden 1 & 2 remasters when they come out in March!!!!

These games (and in particular Suikoden 2) are beloved classics of the RPG world, but folks these days haven't had the opportunity to play them because physical copies of the games have been known to run $200+.

I need more people to know these characters. I need more people to experience the worldbuilding around the True Runes. I need more people to acknowledge this series existed. 🥺

「そういうことじゃない。ネクロードはな、人間じゃないんだ。紋章の力て吸血鬼になった男だから、普通の武器では歯が立たないんだよ」 “That’s not what I’m sayin’. Neclord ain’t human. The power of his rune turned him into a vampire. That’s why normal weapons won’t even scratch him.”

「なんと……！！」 “What?!”

「ヤツを倒すには、何か特殊な武器が必要なんだ。 “You need somethin’ special to bring that bastard down.

それがなんだかはわからねえが、有効な武器を見つけるまでは無闇に動かないはうがいい」 Beats me what that is, but until you find a weapon that’ll have an effect on him, no point in rushin’ in.”

「そうでしたか……」ゾラックが床に視線を落とす。 “I see…” Zorak stared at the floor.

「ビクトール殿、そういうこととは知らず、取り乱して申し訳ない。お許しくだされ」 “I had no idea, Lord Viktor. I apologize for losing my temper. Please forgive me.”

「いいさ。大事な娘さんなんだろ？こっちこそアツくなっちまって」なぜか寂しげに、ビクトールは笑う。 “S’all good. You’re worried about your daughter, ain’tcha? It was me who got bent outta shape first.” Viktor smiled, looking forlorn for some reason.

「それよりゾラックさん、特殊な武器が手に入るところを知らないか？戦士の村の村長さんなら、その筋にも詳しいだろ？」 “By the by, you know anywhere we could get our hands on a weapon that’ll defeat a vampire? Since you’re the mayor of the Warrior’s Village an’ all, figured you’d know a thing or two ‘bout weapons.”

「ふむ……」ゾラックが小さく唸る。 “Hmm…” Zorak hummed in thought.

「武器かどうかはわかりませんが、この村の西にクロン寺院というお寺がありましてな。 “While I do not know about a weapon, there is a temple to the west of here. Qlon Temple.

霊験あらたかな寺院だそうですが、特に紋章に関して悩める者が門を叩くと、その答えを啓示してくれるのだとか…」 That temple works wonders. Especially for those who have troubles concerning runes—knock on their gates, and they may offer you an answer in the form of a divine revelation…”

P29 「なんですって？！」今度はティルが叫んだ。 “What did you say?!” Now it was Tir’s turn to shout in surprise.

紋章に悩める者、それはまさに自分ではないかーー。 Troubles concerning runes! That’s me!

ティルに視線を移して、ゾラックは話を続ける。 Staring at Tir, Zorak continued.

「不思議な話ですが、噂ではそういうことになっております。 “It may sound odd, but that is what the rumors say.

ネクロードが紋章の力で吸血鬼になったのなら、それを倒す答えはそこて得られるかもしれません思います」 If it was a rune that turned Neclord into a vampire, then they may be able to tell you a method of defeating him.”

「クロン寺院だな」ビクトールが、すっくと椅子から立ち上がった。 “Qlon Temple, got it!” Viktor practically leapt out of his chair.

「よし、決めた。ゾラックさん、俺がそこに行ってくるよ。行って、できればヤツを倒す武器を見つけてくる」 “Okay, I’m gonna go check it out. I’ll head there, and if there’s a weapon that’ll defeat Neclord, I’ll find it and bring it back.”

「しかし、無関係のあなた方を巻き込むわけには… 」 “But I couldn’t possibly wrap you all up in this—it isn’t your battle to fight…”

「いいんです、ゾラック村長」ティルも勢いよく立ち上がる。 “It’s okay, Mayor Zorak.” Tir jumped to his feet, too.

「私たち解放軍は、帝国の悪政から人々を解放するために集まったのです。 “The Liberation Army was formed in order to free people from the misrule of the Empire.

ネクロードという将軍があなた方を苦しめているのであれば、私たちはそれと戦わないわけにはまいりません。 If this Neclord is harassing you, then it is our duty to fight him and put a stop to it.

喜んでクロン寺院に行かせていただきます」 Please, allow us to travel to Qlon Temple on your behalf.”

「ティル殿…」ゾラックがほっと息を付く。 “Lord Tir…” Zorak let out the breath he had been holding.

「では、お願いいたします。我らは討ち入りの準備を整え、村で待機しています」 “Of course. Thank you so much. We will continue our preparations for the raid on Neclord’s castle, and will await your return.”

3 Ships:

Let‘s go with three that have been on my mind lately, and let’s go from most to least functional. BoxerRed from Transistor. They’re a ship I go to for people who are deeply supportive of each other. I see them as having very different personalities (Red being distant and intense, Boxer being warmer and more flexible, but ultimately more confrontational) so they spark off of each other well. But they truly want what’s best for each other, and they’re mature enough to be honest together. When things go wrong, it’s because of outside factors, less about their personalities. And then of course there’s AschNatalia, a couple who possibly could have it all, but who are too overwhelmed by outside stressors and their own immaturity to really come together. You can take them in either direction, fluff or angst, showing them growing up and finally just loving each other or exploring all the deep fracture lines in their relationship -- and whichever side you land on, there’s still a bit of the other mixed in. And then finally, the nuclear option when it comes to my ships, CliveElza. No matter what, Clive and Elza carved a life together out despite the brutality and anguish of their upbringing. And because of that love, circumstances turn against them. Elza’s solution is deception, and Clive’s is vengeance and murder. This is the ship for when I’m interesting in digging into the characters more than finding any happy ending.

First Ship:

I think the first ship I really got into and fixated on was CecilRosa from Final Fantasy 4. That may have been because it was the first JRPG I ever played, so I just fixated on it, period. But I think I would have been drawn to the ship anyway, Cecil trying to move through his dark past, Rosa believing in him but also challenging him when necessary.

Last Movie:

Belle, the anime. I’ve watched it twice now, the second time to try to figure out what exactly it’s doing. I enjoyed it a lot, though I think it’s kind of scattered and overambitious, and that weakens it some.

Currently Consuming:

Had some French vanilla chai and trail mix a bit earlier. It’s my typical midday snack.

Currently Watching:

Continuing my trend of watching old sitcoms, I’m working through One Day at a Time. I hadn’t heard much of anything about this one, and I was a little apprehensive at the first few episodes, which was largely the main character shouting at her daughters in a small apartment. But it’s about women making their way in the 70s, and that’s an interesting time period to me, and it gets looser and more comedic over time, so I’m enjoying it.

Currently Reading:

For fun I’m reading Jala’s Mask by Mike and Rachel Grinti. It’s a fantasy set in an island kingdom (I think loosely based on coastal Africa maybe?) in which the heroine Jala quickly negotiates her marriage to a young king, then almost as quickly starts getting in trouble with his political allies, and then dark sorcery shows up. I’m not far into it yet, but it seems promising. For research, I’m reading Pandora’s Daughters by Eva Cantarella, which is trying, against all odds, to piece together the lives of ancient Greek and Roman women despite so little historical evidence. Again, not that far into it, but I’m enjoying it.

Currently Craving:

So there’s this store that’s nearish to where I live, but not near enough that I’d just casually swing by, and it sells the best cookies. They’re nothing fancy, just chocolate chip with peanuts, but they are so good. I’ve been flirting with the idea of making some of my own and hoping I can capture the magic.

As someone whose veritable fandom curse is that I seem to be almost a Bide-A-Wee Home of Wayward Small Fandoms...yeah, I felt this one, metaphysically :D Actual true thing--one of the more obscure fandoms I still follow (Breath of Fire) had a fairly prolific Japanese fanartist creating art for Breath of Fire IV and Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (the last game of which resulted in a sufficiently Broken Base that the series has been moribund outside of Japan since 2005, so you had to HUNT for BOF:DQ art in particular). Said fanartist...is also responsible for Hatoful Boyfriend. Yes, the high school dating sim where you are dating uplifted, sentient pigeons. Which turns out to be a *post-apocalyptic* dating sim where you are dating sentient pigeons. And goddamnit, we were GLAD for any fan content or other content at all

in small fandoms you need to be grateful to the person who only accidentally hit you twice with a frying pan while trying to make you breakfast. in big fandoms you can block people for wearing a shirt you don’t like
