small nitpick bc i agree w the spirit of the post but mary is not a main character in spn. that’s something decided by screentime lines and billing none of which she has a main share of in her seasons. now a character can be instrumental to the plot and be a minor / supporting character, infact the nature of narrative storytelling demands it. you are correct: a compelling majority of plots in spn lead back to mary. but by the logic upon which your statement relies, chuck would also be a main character since him being god means that the entire show leads back to him. but i’m sure we can agree that despite his narrative importance his screentime, number of lines, and actor billing define him as a minor character in the grand scheme of the show. every story has female characters that are instrumental to the narrative but end up overlooked by fans in favor of charismatic male leads, and these issues absolutely deserve to be discussed in fandom spaces. however the way to do it is not to place false importance on these female characters but rather to emphasize the real importance that already exists. call out their side-lining and raise up their supporters.

first off. i understand what the literal definition of a main character is in a tv show, my post was not intended to be 100% serious. and secondly! i didn’t even call mary a main character in the post anywhere!! all i said was that i don’t see her as a minor character—in part because of her significance to the show, and because of how often she does make an appearance in it. i would class her as a recurring character, same as i would chuck. and maybe that is technically incorrect by however the terms are defined in the television industry or whatever, but frankly i don’t care!
