The family's folklore animal:

The northern, puy'ul families always have an animal associated with them, said association is from history that happened with the animal, but the event has nowadays turned into folklore. The stories only being transmitted orally, they slowly diverge and change to be more fantastical. The emblem animal can start off as a regular one but slowly shift into more strange descriptions, eventually ending up as a unique beast. Even if two families have the same emblem animal, the stories will never be the same. The emblem animal will often be a coastal one. On Qua'tuli's clothes, it is found in a bone disk that is hollowed out, then tissue is placed under and attached on the side, and the animal is embroidered in the tissue. They believe that emblem animals will be here after their burial at sea has been done, they think the creature will pick their core at sea and return them to haanu.

Repeated Eye designs:

each region have a different depiction of haanu, maanul's all-mighty mother. In the north their version of her has plenty of eyes. constantly shifting from place to place like clouds passing in the sky, they slowly reemerge from her face to disappear in the wrinkles of flesh at the end of her snout. this is what haanu's face looks like in the north ->

a while i dont have an info chart of every version available yet (ill have a separate post for the subject), this is an old sketch but still very accurate! repeated eye patterns are seen as a protection symbol in north regions

Necklace to hide neck:

Not having clothes isn't inherently seen as sexual, as context matters, although in day-to-day life adults might have certain body parts to hide depending on region. In the north east, adult of both genders will hide their neck, and will also always have their keel hidden even in interiors when wearing lighter clothes. Although they can be shown to their partner in private settings, they're hidden for cultural beliefs.

As i said context matters so showing keel and neck in north east while bathing (they bathe in groups) will not be seen as a lack of decency, as the setting is them simply washing themselves

lucky charm

a tooth (of an unidentified animal) qua'tuli has found as a little child in the snow, while throwing himself in the powdered snow he just stumbled upon it and has kept it as his lucky charm. He actually has it with him as a recruit (inside a pocket), and when he came home after acquiring his iron talons he kept it on his foot glove.

Shady Sands was bombed in 2283 and there is a very simple reason why this date was not included on the chalkboard in vault 4 but 2277 was.

The script for Ep1 clearly states the show is set 219 years after the Great War of 2077 so in 2296. It also states that Maximus is exactly 19 years old (there can be no mistake here, more on the subject in THIS POST) and that he was exactly 6 in his flashbacks. Based on that we can calculate Shady Sands was bombed in 2283. Except the chalkboard that Lucy finds in vault 4 states clearly: "The Fall of Shady Sands - 2277".

People who attempted to reconciliate what they perceived as contradictory information theorized that maybe the arrow after the date 2277 pointing to the bomb was supposed to mean the said bomb was dropped after 2277. Then, however, they would raise the question: why not include the exact date under the bomb picture?

Unable to find an answer, they'd conclude it was all a retcon after fans pointed out that Shady Sands couldn't be bombed in 77 cause it was still standing in 81. Except Todd Howard didn't retcon shit. He only said out loud what has always been in the script and just didn't translate on screen. The question is: why?

The year 2283 isn't directly included in the show because, contrarily to 2277, it's irrelevant to the current storyline.

If the date 2283 was written on the board, everyone would have focused on that date but it's essential that during the classroom scene Lucy - and by extensions the viewer - make a connection between the year 2277 and the bombing of Shady Sands even if said bombing happened at a later point in time.

The year 2283 holds no meaning, not to Lucy, not to a casual viewer. It could only mean something to a long-time fan of the games, NV in particular, as it would confirm that the city was destroyed after 81 thus keeping the timeline so far intact. A confirmation the show creators must have assumed was redundant as they gave us, the viewers, a bit more credit than we probably deserved.

The year 2277, on the other hand, holds specific meaning to Lucy. It's the year of the plague in which her mom presumably starved to death. A meaning of which we have been made privy a couple episodes earlier.

So at this point both her and us are meant to have the following information: in the same year that Lucy's mom died something happened in Shady Sands that led to it's destruction later on. This information will later serve to corroborate Moldaver's story about Rose and Hank.

The only question remains: why would the people in Vault 4 mark the year 2277 specifically as the year of the Fall of Shady Sands?

There are two important things we need to say about the people of vault 4 who are original to the surface and who wrote the timeline on the chalkboard: most, if not all, are survivors of the bombing of Shady Sands and they worship Moldaver whom they percieve as this semi-messianic figure.

While Moldaver might have always been somewhat prominent in Shady Sands, I think it would be safe to assume she only obtained this sort of cult following after 2283 maybe by telling the remaining survivors who'd initially gathered around her that she knew who was responsible for the bombing and that she'd avenge and then rebuild the city. She might have revealed to them that the bombs were dropped by none other than Vault-Tec in retaliation for harboring an escapee from one of their vaults, Rose MacLean, an innocent victim of one of their experiments whom they might have remembered arriving to the city in 2277 since a clean-cut lady in a blue overall would've been rather noticeable.

All that said, some of those people who had later taken residence in Vault 4 could have interpreted Rose's arrival to the city as the event that kickstarted the very fall of the city culminating in its nuclear annihilation in 2283 thus the date on the chalkboard.

When Chomchom contacted me to see if we could meet in NYC when she was visiting, I decided to broach the subject. "Um...you can totally say no, but would you mind me wrapping my naked body around your clothed body to recreate the Rolling Stone cover of John Lennon and Yoko Ono?" She said yes. :-)

I Read a Book! Demon Daughter by Lois McMaster Bujold

It's been a while since I've torn through a book in a single day. Which I did with on Monday, reading all of Demon Daughter by Lois McMaster Bujold in a couple different sit-downs. This was admittedly easier than it could have been since it's novella length (219 pages).

Set in Bujold's World of the Five Gods, it's in the Penric and Des set of stories and rather far along in the storyline. I think it can be read as a stand-alone, but I'm certain a reader will get more out of it if they've read previous Penric and Des stories.

A six-year-old shiplost girl draws the kin Jurald family of Vilnoc into complex dilemmas, and sorcerer Lerned Penric and his Temple demon Desdemona into conflic—with each other.

One thing I always love about Bujold's writing is her deft handling of different points of view. We get sections from Penric and from a six-year-old child — both sound like people of their different ages and there's never a moment one could be confused for the other. The conflict between in-universe Quadrene and Quintarian religion is handled at the level of the character's vastly different educations on the subject (a six-year-old and a theologian).

It was very nice and very satisfying to read a character-driven story where the stakes are everything to the characters involved because it's their lives but not world or even city-shattering.

You hoped and prayed not to trip as you were making your way to the dorm rooms with your phone in hands, texting the two boys you were supposed to meet more than 30 minutes ago, and your laptop in the bag that was decorating your shoulders as you were running for your life.

Scaramouche seemed mad enough already, and it would be downright impolite to take your sweet time getting there.

An accident did end up happening, not looking in front of you was eventually going to result in you bumping into someone, and you did right as you entered the building.

You phone ended up slipping through your fingers and right onto the hardwood floor that was plastered on all the floors of the dorms.

"Oh my god! I’m so sorry i wasn’t looking!" You apologised, reaching for your phone and silently praying that the screen didn’t crack but he was quicker than you.

His hand gently brushed yours as he picked your phone up.

"It’s okay, don’t worry about it." he handed it to you with a smile before getting up from his crouching position

"Oh, thank you! Sorry again." You did the same and finally got the chance to get a good look at him

He looked like the cliché jock in those high school romance, tall, piercing blue eyes and a smile so bright that anyone would swoon at the sight of it.

His arms were covered in scars and, by what his V-neck was showcasing, you could guess that there was more where that came from.

"Uh, are you waiting for the elevator too?" He spoke up, visibly disturbed because of the obvious checking out he was the subject of.

You straighten up, looking up at his eyes before looking to the side in a mix of shame and embarrassment "Yeah…" you replied, in a hushed tone.

When the elevator finally comes you get inside without a second thought and he follows behind you.

Your hands brushed again as you both tried to pressed "2" which resulted in a nervous chuckle from you.

And as if those embarrassing encounters weren’t enough, you brushed hands for the third and final time as you both pressed the doorbell for the dorm "219" at the same time.

The Universe had to have something against you.

"Are you… a friend of Kazuha ?" The idea of Scaramouche having more than one friend didn’t sit right with you so the only logical explanation behind the man beside you being there was that he needed to speak to Kazuha.

But before he could answer, the door opened aggressively.

"Y/N finally! Took you long enough." Scaramouche was the one to open the door. He looked mad but his expression rapidly morphed into confusion when he saw the man standing next to you

"Ooh so you’re Y/N!" The taller man exclaimed loudly, wrapping an arm around your shoulder almost instinctively "I’m Childe it’s nice to finally meet you! I heard plenty about you, you know?"

"Uh… plenty good or plenty bad ?"

Before he could answer, Scaramouche’s soft hand wrapped firmly around your wrist and yanked you away from him and into his dorm room

"Leave her alone already. What do you want ?"

"No need to be so uptight, Scara. And no need to grab her so violently either, no one’s taking her away, I swear." He chuckled

"What do you want ?" Scaramouche repeated, getting more and more irritated every second the other man stood in front of him

"Just came here to give you back the books you lent me, calm down. Plus there was something i wanted to speak to you about real quick."

Scaramouche groaned, not looking forward to whatever his friend wanted to speak to him about, before finally letting go of your wrist.

"Fine, let’s take this outside."

"Why does it sound like you wanna fight me ?"

The shorter man glanced at you before stepping outside and closing the door

"Hey."

With all the commotion, you didn’t even notice Kazuha laying on the couch.

He sat up to give you just enough space to sit down.

"Albedo and Heizou already finished their part and the sent it to me so we just have to finish ours and we can submit it to the teacher."

"What was the point of making a group of 5 if we just ended up working in two different groups"

"Maybe because it’s easier to work on 5 different chapters if we’re 5" if it was anyone else saying this sentence you would think that they found you stupid for even asking that question but it sounded weirdly genuine coming out of Kazuha’s mouth.

"Oh yeah, that makes sense. How long do you think this will take?"

"An hour or two probably, you have to go somewhere ?"

"Oh no, not really."

"Ah that’s good, then. It means you can have dinner with us."

"Dinner… with you guys ?"

"Uh yeah? We’re supposed to eat Italian today."

"Oh I totally forgot about that! Thank God you reminded me I was about to pass on a free dinner"

Silence installed itself for a little while before you decided to speak up

"So uh… that guy was a friend of Scaramouche ?"

"Oh Childe? Yeah they’re super close. He wouldn’t even admit it but i’m pretty sure he would give his right kidney to that man if necessary"

"Really?" From the interaction that you just witnessed, it just seemed like Scaramouche hated the guy

"What are you guys speaking about?" You didn’t even seem to notice the door opening up before Scaramouche entered the living room

"Nothing" Kazuha said in a sing-songy tone, changing his sitting position to give Scaramouche space to sit

"Scooch over Y/N, you’re in my spot"

"Don’t you want to go in the middle instead? It’s comfortable in here"

"Oh I’m sorry! I didn’t know it was your mother that paid for that couch! Get your ass out of here" his tone dropped slightly at the last sentence

"Geez calm down, little bitchboy" you chuckled and could hear Kazuha doing the same

a loud "ow" left your lips as Scaramouche pinched and pull at your cheeks in response to the nickname.

You moved a bit, getting closer to Kazuha as the purple headed man sat down in the spot you were occupying just seconds before

"Let’s get to work."

"Hey Y/N, order us something to drink too while you’re at it"

"I really need to check you into rehab"

With Scaramouche’s phone in hands you scrolled on the ‘Italian restaurant’ category, deciding which one would be the better pick

"That one look nice, it has 4.7 stars" you showed the screen to Scaramouche who squinted to examine it in details

"4.7? Why not 5, huh?"

"Kuni just shut up already. Pick this one Y/N, it sounds good"

"Ok then we’ll eat there. What do you guys want to eat ?"

"I’ll take a pizza." Scaramouche said reluctantly, still not thrilled at the idea of eating there

"Yeah me too!"

"Picking an Italian restaurant just to end up ordering a pizza is crazy cliché"

Scaramouche crossed his arms before replying "Ok well what are you ordering, carissima?"

"Cari-who?"

"That’s Italian for dearest, you’re too broke to know that kind of stuff" he said smirking

"I thought it was Ma chère ?"

"That’s french, Kazu"

"Oh. Close enough."

"I’ll take a pizza i think" you added clicking on the pizza that seemed the tastiest to you

"Are you fucking with me?"

"Here" you handed his phone back to Scaramouche "pick the one you want" your gaze shifted to Kazuha who just made himself comfortable on the floor "isn’t this uncomfortable Kazuha? There’s place on the sofa."

"No I’m good. The floor is cold, i like it"

"The food should be here in 20 minutes"

"You didn’t ask Kazuha what he wanted though"

"He usually picks for me, it’s okay, he knows what i like"

"We should clean up the mess we made in the meantime, no?"

"Yeah… probably" the white haired man muttered even though he made no effort in getting up from the cold floor

Kazuha groaned as he closed the door, having lost the game of rock-paper-scissors he was the one that had to go fetch the delivery which resulted in you and Scaramouche being left alone in the small apartment

It was the first time that you were alone with him since the day before yesterday when he threw that one remark that threw you off and you couldn’t help thinking about it.

Frankly it was the first thing you thought of when he opened up the door a few hours earlier and everytime you looked at him the thought was always at the back of your head.

Maybe he forgot, you thought, even though you didn’t really believe it.

Scaramouche was staring at his phone and you couldn’t help but stare at him and before you could help yourself you, once again, spoke up without thinking.

"Hey Kuni."

"Mhm?"

"Can you kiss me"

He looked up quickly, eyes wide.

"Huh?? What are you talking about?"

"Last time you said you’d kiss me if i ask"

"Are you still thinking about that ? Listen i said i was sorry-"

"Well, I’m asking now. So are you gonna do it ?" You cut him off

"What has gotten into you ?" He looked away, face warming up and ears visibly red

"What? You didn’t mean it?"

"No it’s just- why all the sudden?"

"I don’t know, just felt like it. It’s not like i asked you to be the father of my firstborn child, it’s just a kiss." You said, repeating what he told you over text

"Are you saying that to tease me?"

"No I’m serious. Kiss me."

He buried his face into his hands

"What? Don’t tell me you never kissed anyone before"

"It’s not that! Why all the sudden ?" He repeated

"I just thought that you spoke a lot about kissing me but never actually had the guts to, i thought that maybe if i asked you’d do it"

He glanced at the door, hoping that Kazuha would come in quickly and save him.

It was your first time seeing Scaramouche blush, you wanted to put your hand over his chest to feel his heartbeat and how quick it was at this moment.

Maybe that’s why he was teasing you all the time, seeing someone having that kind of reaction really was fun

Scaramouche sighed in an almost disappointed way. He slapped himself violently ,which caused you to jump a bit, and totally regained his composure.

The only proof left of his previous state was his ears still coated in a crimson red

"Ok, sure."

"Great."

Before you even had the chance to get closer to the man in front of you the door opened revealing Kazuha behind it holding two bags of takeout in one hand

Scaramouche sighed again in a relieved way this time

"Hope I didn’t interrupt anything."

"No no, you’re good" his friend said, putting a hand over his chest in relief

"I’ll go home after this, I have homeworks to finish" you lied before opening the pizza box Kazuha had nicely put right in front of you.

Conlang Year Days 206–258

...That's a rather long span of time. I suppose it makes sense because this post is going to cover All The Clauses. I'm not sure if this is my longest Conlang Year post (though it's probably the longest timespan), but it's a big one.

As you will see, the following sections are incredibly nonsequential. To the point where even if I weren't playing catch-up, I still would have had to wait the full fifty-three days before posting.

Days 206–212 and 252–255: Relative Clauses

Relative clauses follow the nouns they modify and are structured in the same way as full sentences, using a relative pronoun. This pronoun is always used with a case particle (similar to demonstrative pronouns) and conjugates for subjective tense.

(Note: Despite having been doing things with -iza vs. -u/oli pronouns for months, I somehow managed to swap the inanimate and animate sets of pronouns and only caught it much later. Hopefully I'm managing to catch any errors that might find their way into the examples I'm putting into this post, but...)

The verb of a relative clause is almost always left tenseless, unless its objective tense is necessary to clarify.

Koikesio ne ja siza zasi tio nasiza ne ja zacio duoko. I see the person who repaired my time machine.

Nesui tio jia gate sage natia deitei ne taoli dio jikata. The birdmeat that you wanted to eat is over here.

Relative clauses always have heads.

Kateiko sou lui keda katu tia sou taoli. I will go anywhere you go. (lit. I will go to any place that you go to.)

Days 214–222: Phrasal Modifiers

Days 215 and 219: Adposition Phrases

Adposition phrases can be as simple as an adposition phrase placed immediately after the noun they modify:

Kai tio ja siza da Kesiniju ne ki jilulu kainanu. The person from Kesiniju gave them (sg.) flowers.

In some cases, context or order makes the meaning clear—while all arguments save the subject can come in any order, placing, say, a locative argument between the subject and object would usually not happen unless it's meant to modify the subject. Of course, there can be ambiguity:

Lena tiona ja siza da Kesiniju sou ja miedegako. The person from Kesiniju came to the library. OR The person came to the library from Kesiniju.

And you can always use a relative clause to convey the same information in an unambiguous way:

Lena tiona ja siza nai timiza da Kesiniju sou ja miedegako. The person who is from Kesiniju came to the library.

Days 216–217 and 220: Active and Passive Participial Modifiers

This is not a feature present in Lecizao. Relative clauses are to be used instead.

Here's a passive relative clause, to prove that they exist:

Kitulano ne jia gate teinai tio nasaoli kao ja juoci duosia. I made the birdmeat that was eaten by your friend. (I'm looking back at my lexicon and I actually don't think kitule is supposed to mean "make" as in "create," but rather exclusively "make" as in "cause"... this can be a problem for later down the line. I'm too tired to create new vocabulary today.)

Days 218 and 221: Infinitival Modifiers

Infinitives can be placed as noun modifiers in the same manner as adjectives (i.e. after the noun). That's, ah, that's it.

Tetesio ne talouli deitei. I have many things to eat.

Days 223–224 and 235–239: Noun Clauses

My entire section on noun clauses is just a reference to the section on embedded clauses.

Clauses (with infinitive verbs) can be treated as nouns by applying a particle to them. This is something I neglected to include when first working on embedded clauses, but in retrospect makes more sense than the alternative. So that's been adjusted.

Gakani ne deisage naneju deitei ne jia gate. They (sg.) said they (sg.) wanted to eat birdmeat.

Koigano ne deitei tiona Keiti ne ja nene. I saw Katie eating the onion.

(Accusative particle underlined in both examples)

Clauses can be put under any case that makes sense. Here are examples where clauses are given nominative and instrumental marking:

Nai tio deikitule kalo naneju ne deitei tiona Keiti ne ja nene. It is wrong that they (sg.) made Katie eat the onion. (That they (sg.) made Katie eat the onion is wrong.) (Check that adjective placement!)

Lenano nalako sie naneju sou Tanu Dato kao deilio. We (excl.) came to Tanu Dato by walking.

Day 225: Subjunctives

There is no specific subjunctive marking in Lecizao.

Tenesio ne deisuonai lako dio jikata. I wish I weren't here.

Days 226, 228–229, and 231–232: Evidential Marking and Communication/Cognition

See: Embedded clauses. Again.

Sidesio ne deitei tiona Keiti ne ja nene. I know Keiti ate the onion. Gakani ciako ne deitei tiona Keiti ne ja nene. They told me Keiti ate the onion. Midani ne deitei tiona Keiti ne ja nene. They lied that Keiti ate the onion. Denano ne deitei tiona Keiti ne ja nene. I thought that Keiti ate the onion.

(Fun fact: Lecizao now has a canonical word for "onion." It's nenetono. But I've been making Katie/Keiti eat onions to show off embedded clauses for a while, and nene can cover almost all edible plant parts, including whatever an onion is [don't know nor care], and I really don't feel like going through and replacing all of them now or ever.)

Days 227, 229, 233, and 248: Conditionals and Reason/Condition Clauses

I posted part of the conditional documentation out of context a while back. Here's a condensed version of the whole thing:

Conditionals are formed in different ways depending on whether the verb is tenseless or tensed. Tenseless verbs just take a prefix ni-:

Miju tiokesi Keiti. Keiti is sleeping. Nimiju tiokesi Keiti. Keiti would be sleeping right now. (Note that there is a tense in this sentence, but it's attached to the case particle.)

Tensed verbs use an infix instead. Whenever possible, the infix is reduced simply to -n-, coming between the full verb and the reduced suffix. Otherwise (which is to say, in 3.5th and 4th person), the infix is -ni- and comes between the full verb and the suffix.

Mijesio. I am sleeping. Mijunesio. I would be sleeping. Mijusipeke. The Time Worm is sleeping. Mijunisipeke. The Time Worm would be sleeping.

Irregular verbs are treated as regular in this construction:

Neiso lako lakui. I am afraid. Nainesio lako lakui. I would be afraid. (The most literal translation of these sentences would actually be "Afraid me exists." This is how adjectives work.)

The word niu pretty straightforwardly means "if." It can be used to indicate external information that a conditional is dependent on, either before or after the conditional:

Niu neisia zunoma, mijunesio. If you were quiet (right now), I would be sleeping. Mijunesio, niu neisia zunoma. I would be sleeping if you were quiet (right now).

Or it can be used to indicate unknown information:

Nemulesio niu deimiju tio Keiti. I do not know if Keiti is sleeping.

Reason clauses are led in with the word node, and follow the clause they give reason for. As you will soon see, this is very typical.

Nemulano ne ja zeneino, node nano kui jia Kamama Taitesi. I didn’t hear about the pandemic, because I was in the Taitesi Mountains. Nemulano ne deigana nanejui, node mijano diaci kogakatia ne goduili. I didn’t know they left, because I was asleep when you said so.

Days 243–245: Clausal Coordination

I already did this.

Days 246–247, 249–251, and 256–258: Adverb Clauses

Adverb clauses are generally formed with conjunctions. There are sequential conjunctions, conjunctions for indicating time and place... and those are all the ones I've already made.

Mijano sezela tei dio gainoudu. I slept after eating in the evening. Zaseiko ne ja zacio duoko seku gana. I will repair my time machine before leaving. (Or: I will repair my time machine, and then leave.)

Mijeiko diaci konai ne la zatuiza. I will sleep when I’m dead. (lit. I will sleep when I’m a person that dies.) Nemulano ne la keni nai tio timiza daida kokimo tio ja dolo. I didn’t see a path at the start of the river. (lit. I didn’t see a path that was where the river begins. [Implying you may have seen one elsewhere]) Galani ne la degako diaci kopasi se la nulo. They read a book while sitting at a desk. (lit. They read a book when sat at a desk.)

That's it. I think. If it isn't, well, I've spent enough time on this post. If I've made a mistake on the days I'm attributing to each category, or forgotten something important, or written something particularly silly, I don't care until at least tomorrow and at most until I've managed to scrape together a full night of sleep, which at the rate I've been going might not happen for a month or several or ever.

And I'm still eleven days behind on Conlang Year and counting. Hopefully I can catch up before September en—before October st—before too long. That's a realistic goal because it cannot be defined.

Welcome, I hope you are well *Subject/Invitation to support me in rebuilding the house*

When the hope of returning home evaporates, and you become displaced and homeless without housing, for an open period, you feel that all your energy has been exhausted, and terrifying nightmares begin to dominate your mind.

I worked long hours and borrowed a lot to complete the house, and I am not happy with it yet. Now all I have is the tent, in which I will stay until an unknown date. My children are living in a state of despair and loss, and how difficult it is to stand in front of them when you are unable to provide them with food, drink, and housing.

My goal now is to rebuild the house, and I am very far from the goal that is a dream for us, so how difficult it is to become homeless indefinitely.
