Conservation groups filed objections this week to the U.S. Forest Service’s proposed final management plan for the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests in western Colorado. The plan would allow commercial logging on more than 772,000 acres of public lands, including mature and old-growth trees — a 66% increase from the current forest plan.

“A sizeable area of our beloved forests could be sacrificed to commercial logging at the expense of our already dwindling wilderness areas, wildlife habitat and recreation,” said Chad Reich with High Country Conservation Advocates. “Outdoor recreation is a far larger economic driver for our communities than the local timber industry that benefits from cutting these forests. The Forest Service would’ve known that if it had conducted an economic analysis, as required by law.”

Under the proposed plan mature and old-growth forests, which store massive amounts of carbon, could be commercially logged. Forest managers would not be required to identify and protect old-growth and mature trees. Steep slopes across the forests, including Upper Taylor Canyon and Slate River Valley, could also be logged despite the high risk of severe erosion and threats to water quality.

“The proposed plan directly violates federal policy on protecting mature and old-growth trees as a cornerstone of U.S. climate action,” said Alison Gallensky, conservation geographer with Rocky Mountain Wild. “The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests boast the highest carbon sequestration capacity of any national forest in the Rocky Mountain region. Despite this the Forest Service has failed to ensure these vital carbon sinks aren’t logged and sold.”

Objections also challenged the Forest Service’s failure to take urgently needed climate action by prohibiting new coal leasing in the plan.

The Forest Service recommended adding only 46,200 acres of new wilderness area in the final plan. The community’s conservation proposal had called for more than 324,000 acres of new wilderness lands. In addition, the Gunnison Public Lands Initiative offered a broadly supported proposal for new wilderness and special management areas in Gunnison County that was mostly excluded.

“Community members proposed special management area designations to protect pristine forestlands in the North Fork Valley from logging and oil and gas drilling,” said Peter Hart, legal director at Wilderness Workshop. “The Forest Service ignored those proposals and chose not to protect those areas in the new plan.”

The groups also raised concerns about the plan’s failure to address the myriad needs of plants and animals that depend on the forests.

“Over 20 years ago Colorado Parks and Wildlife reintroduced Canada lynx to the San Juan Mountains,” said Rocky Smith, a long-time forest management analyst. “This is a great source of pride for wildlife lovers in this state. Lynx are federally threatened and depend on mature forests with large trees. This plan allows for logging that could easily degrade or destroy much of the best habitat for lynx and their main prey, snowshoe hares, and undermine Colorado’s hard work to reestablish and maintain a viable lynx population.”

The Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre and Gunnison national forests also provide habitat for the iconic bighorn sheep and lesser-known species like the Grand Junction milkvetch and the Tundra buttercup. These species, among others, need special designation the Forest Service grants to plants and animals when there is concern about their ability to survive in the area. Many struggling plants and animals were left off the list in the proposed final plan.

“Without the species of conservation concern designation the Forest Service has no obligation to make sure the plants and animals continue to exist locally,” said Chris Krupp, public lands attorney with WildEarth Guardians. “In many cases, the agency decided not to designate wildlife, plants or fish merely because it had no data on their population trends. Without species of conservation concern designation, the number of bighorn sheep in GMUG could dwindle down to almost nothing and the agency wouldn’t have to do anything about it.”

One way to differentiate between a pig, boar, or hog is through size and body structure. Pigs have a smaller and stubbier snout and typically have a rounded body. Boars have longer snouts, bushier manes, longer hair, and a strong muscular build.

The wild boar (Sus scrofa), also known as the wild swine,common wild pig, Eurasian wild pig,or simply wild pig, is a suid native to much of Eurasia and North Africa, and has been introduced to the Americas and Oceania. The species is now one of the widest-ranging mammals in the world, as well as the most widespread suiform. It has been assessed as least concern on the IUCN Red List due to its wide range, high numbers, and adaptability to a diversity of habitats. It has become an invasive species in part of its introduced range. Wild boars probably originated in Southeast Asia during the Early Pleistocene and outcompeted other suid species as they spread throughout the Old World.

Wild boars have adapted to many environments, including deciduous and evergreen forests, grasslands, mountain ranges, wetlands, and urban environments

Physical Description

Weight: 75–100 kg (165–220 lb) for males, 60–80 kg (130–180 lb) for females

Height at shoulder: 75–80 cm (30–31 in) for males, 70 cm (28 in) for females

Both sexes are solidly built, with short legs and a thick neck; males and females also have tusks, though they're larger in males

Adults are covered in shaggy fur, the color of which can be highly variable

Behaviour

Females live in social groups called sounders, dominated by a matriarch, while adult males live alone

Adult males are extremely territorial and will drive away rivals and potential threats to the sounder

Primary predators of adults include wolves, leopards, and tigers

Wild boars are omnivorous, feeding on roots and tubers, nuts, berries, worms, rodents, eggs, reptiles, and carrion

Here’s something I’ve been meaning to make into a post for ages but always forget to. But now I wanna just finally say it!

So Homeworld arrived on Earth roughly 6000ish years ago, right?

I always wished there was more attention to what Earth was like for the humans who were living under the shadow of the invading gems. Especially since at this point it was at only the very beginning of the Bronze Age for our Earth.

But there is one thing in particular that I will always love imagining…

Rose could have encountered Mammoths…

To explain, in our real history, Woolly Mammoths had slowly gone extinct across Eurasia and North America as their main habitat, the Mammoth Steppe was being slowly phased out with dense forest. Eventually this left just one sole population to be at the last place on Earth they could take refuge on, a small island that had at one point been connected to Siberia by a land bridge before becoming cut off…

But while they had access to food, it wasn’t enough to feed a population of full sized mammoths long-term, and they really didn’t have any predators… which led to a selective pressure to be smaller…

Leading to a Mammoth that’s barely larger than today’s bison. Impressive for sure, but quite humble compared to their mainland predecessors.

But this trade off worked out for them, at least for a while, because while Mammoths eventually became extinct in mainland roughly 10,000 years ago, the dwarf mammoths on Wrangel Island lasted until 4,000 years ago!

By the time they eventually died out, the pyramids were already built.

And if the same is true for SU’s version of Earth, and there were indeed mammoths occupying far off islands up north, I like to think Rose would have loved to see them. (Art below made by TheChekhov).

A judge has rejected federal agencies’ approval of activities in the California Desert Conservation Area, including a vast network of off-road vehicle routes in the West Mojave Desert. The activities are driving desert tortoises and other threatened and endangered wildlife toward extinction.

Tuesday’s ruling is a victory for conservationists. In 2021 environmental groups sued the Interior Department, Bureau of Land Management and Fish and Wildlife Service over the 2019 West Mojave Route Network Project, which failed to minimize off-road vehicles’ harms to public lands and protect endangered and threatened species and their habitats.

U.S. District Judge Susan Illston ruled that the Bureau violated the Federal Land Policy and Management Act by designating off-road vehicle routes without basing its criteria on minimizing damage to resources. That includes habitat for species such as the endangered Lane Mountain milk vetch, which is found only in the western Mojave Desert.

The judge also ruled that the Bureau wrongly assumed that there would be no growth in off-road vehicle activity or harm to air quality from the new routes.

Under the West Mojave plan, the BLM adopted nearly 6,000 miles of dirt roads for off-road vehicle use (that’s enough to go approximately one-quarter of the way around the Earth’s circumference). This has led off-roaders to create hundreds of new illegal roads in fragile habitat that is supposed to be protected for desert tortoises. The desert tortoise population has now declined to unsustainable levels in the western Mojave Desert.

The court also invalidated the Fish and Wildlife Service’s biological opinion, ruling that the agency violated the Endangered Species Act by ignoring studies showing threats to the desert tortoise and harm from off-road vehicles and by relying on unenforceable mitigation measures. The judge also said the Fish and Wildlife Service used an irrational “surrogate” approach to determine the number of desert tortoises that would be killed or taken and failed to require enforceable measures to minimize harm to the animals. The Bureau violated the Act by relying on the Fish and Wildlife Service’s flawed analysis, the judge ruled.
