LGBTQ+ words in Finnish
I believe a lot of people have made this post in the past but because I'm so excited about attending Helsinki pride this year, I decided to make this post as a refresher! Are any of you guys coming?
The acronym is HLBT+ in Finnish, with H standing for Homo (gay) at the front for some reason. Some people use LGBTQ+ in Finnish too.
L stands for lesbo (lesbian) which, unlike in english, isn't a slur when talking in Finnish.
B is for biseksuaali, meaning bisexual and T is for trans, which has the same meaning in English.
One of my personal favorites among LGBTQ+ vocabulary is kvääri (queer), which also has many other translations but this one is the most used. I also love muusu, a shortening from muunsukupuolinen (nonbinary) which can also be ei-binääri. Some people prefer sukupuoleton (genderless) and I love that too. Another useful term is androgyyni (androgynous). A third gender can be expressed as a direct translation; kolmas sukupuoli. A neutral gender could be neutri. I absolutely adore how many different words there are for this non-male non-female spectrum.
I haven't told this yet, but I am a trans guy! That would be transmies in Finnish. A trans woman would be transnainen.
OTHER WORDS:
Gender - sukupuoli
Gender diversity - Sukupuolen moninaisuus
Asexual - aseksuaali
Pansexual - panseksuaali
Straight - hetero
Homophobia - homofobia
Sexual orientation - seksuaalinen suuntautuminen
A family with same-sex parents - sateenkaariperhe (rainbow family)
Tasa-arvo - equality
To come out of the closet - Tulla kaapista (ulos)
"Related to LGBTQ+ topics" - sateenkaareva (rainbow-y)

True
Author: Riika Pulkkinen
World Challenge read for 🇫🇮 Finland
Review
So I went for a highly acclaimed literary novel for Finland. And, true to being a literary novel, as I found out several chapters in... it features an affair! So I laughed at this cliché come true.
But regardless, True is a very well-written (and well-translated) novel. Its exploration into the psyche of its characters is intriguing.
The setting of the book revolves around the expected death of the matriarch of the family, Elsa, who is terminally ill. The point of view shifts between family members, reflecting on relationships and regrets. It also shifts into the past to take the point of view of Eeva, the young nanny/mistress, as imagined by granddaughter Anna.
One of the talents of the book is to muddle memories - starting with something someone remembers and then slowly peeling away the truth to what it really was. This is also reflected in the way Anna conflates her own relationship and memories with Eeva's.
There's also lots of cozy scenes of Finland (I want to know what cardamom bread tastes like now).
Overall this was a beautiful character study that gently pries apart the hidden emotions of people without judgement.

whatever I say about sweden tonight cannot be held against me. it’s the eurovision spirit and the nordic rivalry getting to me. after all, in finland we say “it doesn’t matter who wins as long as sweden loses”

Did you enjoy your vacation?
thanks for asking! yeah i would say i did. Ive been in a campground on some island for a week to see and paint beautiful landscape but i was too dumb for only bringing three canvases and not bringing my sketchbook (sprained my leg there). Next week i spent (still spending but im leaving tomorrow) in Saint Petersburg to see gulf of Finland and Karelia, visit Hermitage(sucked) and Russian Museum(was awesome) with my dad and stepmom (almost got poisoned of accidently drinking vinegar)
