Person who I secretly think is very cool and funny @aspeneyes tagged me to answer 30 questions and then tag 20 blogs I want to get to know better (I definitely don't know that many but I'll try my best...)
1. Name/nickname: Chrissy which is actually already a nickname for Christine and I've been going by that since 4th grade. Got tired of people calling me Christina but now I get Christy so not much has changed lol
2. Gender: cis woman
3. Star sign: scorpio (not that I really know what that means but apparently it's sexy of me idk)
4. Height: 5'8" last time I went to the doctor
5. Time: 9:59 p.m. est (well it's 11:30 p.m. when I'm finishing this but that's when I started)
6. Birthday: November 10th
7. Favorite groups/bands: I'm a kpop bastard as we all know so you got bts, dreamcatcher, txt, and a.c.e as the main ones. I also listen to twice, red velvet, everglow, itzy, stray kids, etc. more casually. Outside of that I do listen to fob and patd (although almost exclusively vices and virtues or pretty odd) and also Daughter because I'm unwell <3 Also the musical Nevermore about Edgar Allen Poe it slaps
8. Favorite solo artists: There are less of these but for kpop you primarily got chungha and then you got hyuna and sunmi and such. Outside of that you mostly got hozier and sleeping at last (isn't he technically a solo artist?) and Marina.
9. Song stuck in my head: honestly it's how you like that by blackpink which I am annoyed about because I don't really like it that much but oh well (I don't dislike all their music just this one song in particular)
10. Last movie: I watched Jingle Jangle with my friends before christmas and a few days before that it was Klaus (which i liked better) with mck and willow
11. Last show: the last show I finished was The Untamed (thank you birdie for the worms in my brain!) and I'm now watching House M.D. because I need something to act like background noise when I'm unwell
12. When did I create this blog: uhhhhhh I think 2017? Or 2016? idk I was in high school probably sophomore year
13. What do I post: basically whatever Fandom I'm in so I used to post about voltron when I was watching that (yikes!) and now it's mostly kpop and then theres that destiel/election meme I made that got an inexplicably substantial amount of notes
14. Last thing googled: 'cat tortoise' (to check how to correctly spell tortie because I was talking to birdie about how my cat has tortie like patterning to some of her coloring)
15. Other blogs: this is the only one we die like men on main and all that
16. Do I get asks: I used to get 0 but now I'll get a few when I reblog ask games and stuff but nothing outside of that
17. Why did I choose this url: the girl I was tragically in love with in high school said if I was a flower I'd be a white carnation because of my 'pure love' or whatever and I've been sad about it ever since
18. Following: apparently it's 126
19. Followers: 109! (It genuinely used to be like 10 until the Meme got over 60k notes and I gained nearly 100 which side note why are you guys still here this can't possibly be the content you signed up for but thanks for being here)
20. Average hours of sleep: uhhh somewhere between 6 and 7, 8 if I'm on my best behavior
21. Lucky number: 21 (which is funny)
22. Instruments: guitar!! (both electric and acoustic but I've played acoustic longer)
23. What am I wearing: a navy blue sweater with thin horizontal white dashes and stripes and grey cotton trousers (also fuzzy light grey socks it's cold in my room)
24. Dream job: it's a fight to the death between being a poignant little actor in poignant little films/plays and being a LPC working with children and teens
25. Dream trip: well I was supposed to study abroad this year, Oxford in the summer with 2 of my friends and South Korea in the fall all by myself, which obviously didn't happen so I'd desperately like to still get to someday. Also a road trip with all my friends would be nice...
26. Favorite food: my mom's mac and cheese
27. Nationality: American
28. Favorite song: there are way too many songs to truly pick one but at the moment the answer coming to mind is the gambler by fun.
29. Last book I read: technically the last thing I read was the script for my university's first spring production (it's an adaptation of Three Sisters by Chekhov)
30. Three fictional universes I'd like to live in: When I was a kid I uses to roleplay being at camp halfblood with my neighbors in the woods so the percy jackson universe has gotta be one of them. I'd say the untamed because it would be cool to magically kick ass with a sword but I'm a woman so I'd probably die... Other than that idk
Alright so like I said I don't know 20 blogs but I'll tag @korimi4 @holdingthispain @waluigiapologist and @restinpeas since you're all newer mutuals of mine! (but obviously no pressure if you don't want to!)

Intro
Korean.
Christian.
Counselor.
These are the three things that define me. I would list Christian first, but I ordered them in such a way because my work as a counselor is much more intertwined with my being a Christian. I’m a Korean, as well as a Christian counselor.
I came to the states when I was about a year old from Seoul, South Korea. After a year or so, I went back to Korea with my mom, stayed there for a few years, and came back to the states for good in 1996. I didn’t have any formal education until I started first grade in April with not even two months left of the school year. I didn’t speak a word of English, but now at the age of 30, people are pretty impressed that I speak and write both English and Korean fluently.
When I was 10, I was crossing the street at an intersection with four stop signs, and a really really old man didn’t see me. I underwent bilateral arthroscopic procedures on the knees and went to receive physical therapy for a couple months. I just remember that I dreaded going to the therapy office. Shortly after, within a year, I was running around as if the car accident had never happened.
I studied like I’ve never studied before for two months, and was accepted into Stuyvesant High School, a highly prestigious high school in the city with escalators. I definitely have to mention that because that’s of the things that made me feel that I had to get accepted. I knew nothing else about the school to be honest except that it was considered a top notch school, if not the best, in NY. I went through all four years getting average scores and hanging out with the good apples. All I ever did was go to school, participate in clubs and other extracurricular activities, go home, and repeat.
I was accepted to the William E. Macaulay Honors College at Queens College, where I received free tuition for all four years, and my very own macbook, which I bought for a $1 in my junior year. I also used part of a $7,000 stipend to study abroad during the Winter of 2010 in Japan. College was a joke compared to my time at Stuyvesant.
In my senior year of college, I met an older boy who exposed me to cutting school, sex, cigarettes, weed, and drinking. I spent the next three years experimenting with things in life that I had looked down upon up until then. During these years, I held menial job positions as a dental assistant, but also made some cash working as a private tutor. I always had my own spending money - as long as my parents provided a roof over my head, I was able to take care of the rest, so much so that I even lent the boyfriend a few thousand dollars, which he never repaid. Also during these years, as time passed, I started to skip church service more and more often.
When life seemed to not be progressing the way I hoped, and the boyfriend was just as unmotivated about life as he was when I met him, I just happened to meet a new person. 5 years younger, attractive (very popular with the girls), and vivacious, he was eager to impress me even though I kept my distance from him since I am a loyal and faithful person. But, after about six months had passed of knowing this younger guy and things didn’t look promising with the boyfriend, I made a very difficult decision to change gears.
The new boyfriend brought me happiness and motivation. I was at my most prime physically, and started to take classes at a community college to pursue a nursing degree. It wasn’t long (in fact, only about a month in) when our relationship started to not look right. He was quick to tell me that he wanted to break up, I was jealous and worried that he might look at other girls (since he was so popular, and he was also overly friendly and helpful, especially with the ladies), and worst of all, he and I just didn’t see eye to eye. From the get-go, our communication was not fluid, and this continued for the next 5 years. The relationship quickly grew toxic - I became more submissive and docile while he grew more and more aggressive and abusive.
In 2015, I started grad school to become a school counselor. There were many obstacles along the way such as having to prolong my studies a whole year because of issues at my internship site. Mentally and emotionally, I always felt drained because my relationship with the boyfriend was growing more and more toxic, and I didn’t feel happy with the counseling program.
At the fifth year of my relationship with the boyfriend, my sister and her boyfriend became engaged and soon after, she was busy working full time (in a director position) and planning on a wedding. Being that in the Korean culture, the older siblings are supposed to get married first, pressure was put on me, not necessarily by my family, but by older adults and even strangers. I didn’t care much, but I think I was more envious of the fact that her life was moving the way I wanted mine to go.
I was 28 years old. No job. A toxic relationship. People all around me getting married and even having kids. My dream as a child was always to get married early (at 21 years of age!) and have children with the man I loved. I was pretty much a miserable wreck by this time. Oh, and I was hit by a car again. Another old old man who didn't see my huge northface jacket as I crossed the street. I was dealing with some serious back and knee pain, and unlike when I was 10 years old, the healing process was taking a lot longer.
One summer night in 2018, as I followed my usual routine, playing PC games and/or browsing the web, and listening to Christian music (that’s right. I didn’t listen to anything else, but Christian music), suddenly the lyrics to the song that was playing hit me hard. I can’t remember for sure what song it was, but for some reason I feel like it could have been “Reckless Love” by Cory Asbury. I just started to weep uncontrollably and praise God.
My life changed after that night.
About a year after that night, here I am writing my first blog post.
This blog will be dedicated to my detailed life stories, and Bible passages/messages I want to share. Every single one of my posts will have an underlying or very evident Christian theme because before I am anything else, my identity is in Jesus Christ alone.
I pray that my blogs will glorify God alone, that you will leave deeply reflecting on what God’s love and grace looks like in your life, and that my true life stories will encourage you to love Him more and praise Him for who He is.

Hey Christina!!!!!!!!!! Sorry I’m hyped. I was wondering if you could do a “50 things about yourself” idk if you’ve done it before but I’d like to know about you cause you’re so cool! 😎 and we love you
Hi!  I haven’t done one before but I’m happy to.  And of course, if there’s anything you guys want to know about me I’m an open book.  This particular “50 Things” tag is old school Tumblr, so it’s sort of random, but hopefully something in there is interesting for you guys.
1. What takes up too much of your time?
Reddit.  I’m an information junkie and most of the stuff on there has very little use in my life, but once in a while I come across a gem and it’s what keeps me scrolling.
2.       What makes your day better?
Iced coffee.  There’s a coffee shop near my house that I really like, and I also bought a bunch of the fancy flavored syrups so I can make it at home.
3.       What’s the best thing that happened to you today?
I’ve been having a pretty chill day so far, but spending the day with my boyfriend has been really nice.
4.       What fictional place would you like to go?
The Night Circus!  It’s one of my secret ambitions in life to actually build it.
5.       Are you good at giving advice?
I sure hope so, otherwise I’m running some of your lives 😂. But seriously, I do my best.1.
6.       Do you have any mental illness?
Let’s say I know my way around a therapist’s office and leave it at that.
7.       Have you ever experienced sleep paralysis?
Yes!  I used to get a combination of sleep paralysis and exploding head syndrome semi-regularly, but that hasn’t happened in years.
8.       What musician inspired you the most?
I don’t know about “inspired” but I think The Velvet Underground had a big hand in shaping who I am.  Also Patti Smith, she’s great.  I highly recommend her book “Just Kids” to all of you.  There’s something about it that feels Skinsy even though on paper they’re nothing alike.
9.       Have you ever fallen in love?
Absolutely.  I’ve been with my boyfriend for four years now and I couldn’t be happier.
10.   What’s your dream date?
I love driving to a new city and checking out what there is to do there.  I think having a place that you share just with that one person is really romantic.
11.   What do other people notice about you?
My hair, my clothes, or my “intimidating” face are the ones I hear the most often.
12.  What is the annoying habit you have?
My boyfriend really hates it when I do “active listening” (where you nod or make noises to let people know you’re still paying attention to them).
13.  Do you still talk to your first love?
No, but I hope they’re doing well.
14.  How many ex’s do you have?
6ish would be my guess?  I’d be interested to know if all of those people would say that I’m their ex, though.
15.  How many songs are on your playlist?
I don’t really make playlists, so I guess none.  I’m sorry that’s a super boring answer.
16.  What instruments can you play?
Piano and bass guitar pretty well and tuba badly (and I can’t actually carry the instrument anymore).  I could play the flute when I was younger but I imagine I can’t anymore.
17.  Who do you have the most pictures of?
My boyfriend, I think.  I have a Polaroid camera and I like taking pictures of him when he’s not paying attention.
18.  Where would you like to go before you die?
Argentina, Scandinavia, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Russia, Vietnam, South Africa, Morocco, Australia, Antarctica, and the moon.
19.  What is your zodiac?
Libra!  My birthday is coming up on the 17th.
20.  Do you relate to it?
I do!  And I feel sort of badly about that because I know that zodiac is just the Barnum Effect in action, but the Libra desire for balance, idealism, and love of aesthetics is me.
21.  What is happiness to you?
Being free of expectations from myself and other people.
22.  Are you going through anything right now?
In my experience, adulthood is just going through different things for the rest of your life, so yes. Pretty much always.  But right now I’m looking for a new job and that’s been a lot.
23.  What is the worst decision you’ve ever made?
How much time do you have?  I did a lot of things in my teenage years that I’m not particularly proud of.
24.  What is your favourite store?
I love really giant department stores like Harrod’s, or covered markets with tons of different random stalls.  I like the idea that you don’t know what you’re going to find.  I also love antique stores for the same reason.
25.  What is your opinion on abortion?
It should be available and accessible to anyone who wants or needs it.  But so should birth control.  And I think it’s important that people understand all of their options before making a decision and are given mental health support if they need it as well.
26.  Do you have a bucket list?
Not really.  I had basically one thing that I’d always wanted to accomplish and that happened way earlier than I expected, so now I’m trying to figure out what my next thing will be.
27.  Do you have a favourite album at the moment?
Blue Scholar’s Cinematropolis or Belle & Sebastian’s Dear Catastrophe Waitress.  And Velvet Underground’s Loaded, always.
28.  What do you want for your birthday?
I’m hoping my boyfriend and I will go away for the weekend.  Fingers crossed that our schedules work out!
29.  What are most people’s first impression of you?
I think people find me to be intimidating (when they’re being generous) or mean (when they’re not).  Like I said before, I have a bit of a bitchy face and so I have to make a conscious effort to smile at people.
30.  What age do you seem according to most people?
I’m not sure.  I’ve gotten to the point where I’m just sort of “in my 20s” and people don’t care what the exact number is.  But in general, I think people assume I am however old they are, so anywhere from like 18-30.
31.  Where do you keep your phone while you’re sleeping?
Right next to my bed, which you shouldn’t do.  But I read on my phone before I go to sleep and I use it as an alarm clock, so it ends up on my bedside table.
32.  What word do you say the most?
It’s probably “but”.  I spend a lot of time considering all the possibilities in a given situation so I spend a lot of time being like, “but what about this? But what if that? Things could be this way, but on the other hand they’re like that”.  I don’t think I really have a catchphrase, though.
33.  What’s the oldest age you would date?
Thirty, probably?  I feel like anyone older than that is probably in a different stage of their life than I am.
34.  What’s the youngest age you would date?
Twenty three or so?  They would have to be out of college.
35.  What job/career do most people say would suit you?
Other than the job I do now, I get a lot of people saying that I should be an art curator or a museum curator.  And I get people telling me I should be a therapist, obviously.
36.  What’s your favourite music genre?
Like most people I like your general pop/rock situation.  I really like baroque pop, which is pop music but that includes orchestral instruments.  And then I also love electroswing, I think it’s such a fun blend of genres.
37.  If you could live in any country in the world, where would it be?
Either the Netherlands or Denmark.  But I would also like to spend some time in France and more time in Italy, where I did study abroad.  I also really love the UK, but given the current political situation I’m not sure I’ll be moving there any time soon, especially since I’d need a visa.
38.  What is your current favourite song?
I don’t know if I really have one.  I do enjoy when I hear Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” on the radio, though, does that count?
39.  How long have you had this blog for?
Since October, 2013!  I’m coming up on my six year anniversary.  I think I have something like 30,000 posts.
40.  What are you excited for?
The future! I think no matter how the present seems, the future is always an exciting prospect.
41.  Are you a better talker or listener?
I think this might surprise some people, but I think I’m a better talker than listener.
42.  What is the last productive thing you did?
The last really productive thing I did was to film a pitch video for a project I’m working on, but the most recent is doing some work for this blog.
43.  What do you want for Christmas?
The impeachment of Donald Trump? Can Santa do that?  I would also take “people taking climate crisis seriously”.
44.  What class do you get the best grades in?
In high school, philosophy/religion and psychology. At university I did very well in “Iconic Figures of Popular Music: Simon and Garfunkel”.
45.  On a scale of 1-10, how are you feeling?
Around a 7.  I need to get dressed and leave the house, but I don’t have anywhere in particular I need to be so I’ve been putting it off.
46.  What can you see yourself doing in 10 years?
I’d like to be living in a different country than the one I do now with my boyfriend.  I’d like to be self employed or remotely employed, so that I have flexibility in when and where I do work.  I want to be doing something where I’m bettering other people’s lives or the world at large. But mostly what I’d like to be doing is traveling and learning.  But really my priority is that by that time, I want to be content with myself.  I think what you’re doing and where you’re doing it is so much less important than how you feel while doing it, and in 10 years I hope I can say that I’m living a happy and worthwhile life, whatever that ends up being.
47.  When did you get your first heart broken?
I think I was 14.  What I’ll say about it is this- in the moment it mattered so, so much to me.  My parents were the first person that each other dated and I assumed that was how all relationships worked, so when that wasn’t how this one worked out, I was devastated.  But now I barely remember that person, and  I live with someone else who’s completely different and totally awesome and I couldn’t be happier.  I know it sounds like a lie but with time and perspective all wounds can heal.
48.  At what age do you want to get married?
I didn’t think I wanted to get married at all.  I don’t like the idea of having a big wedding where you’re the center of attention and everyone is starting at you.  But in the long run being legally married is practical, so my boyfriend and I will probably do it at some point when we feel like it makes logistic sense.
49.  What career did you want to have as a child?
I wanted to be an Imagineer at Disney.  They’re the people who design the theme parks.  I also wanted to be the president of the moon.
50.  What do you crave right now?
Excitement!  Nothing is going on in my day right now and I’m starting to get bored.  I have a very low tolerance for boredom so days like this really get to me.

falling for you
[ mark x reader: cafe!au, fluffy ]
[ wc: 2766 ]
a/n: i love mark lee, that’s all. also sorry if the ending got a bit awkwardly phrased i’m awful at ending this kind of stuff :(
Tumblr media
it’s been only a couple months since you’ve moved to korea, but you’re already homesick.
you decided studying abroad would be a good idea to get a new perspective on your studies, so you’d applied to a few universities in the bustling city of seoul, south korea. plus, your best friend, yuna, who was a korean transfer student you had met in high school, had her own apartment that she excitedly let you share. the first few days had been bliss: you went out with yuna to explore your new home for the next semester or two. you visited the line store, went to everland, korea’s biggest amusement park, and shopped til you dropped.
but after the semester begins, you’re ready to go back home. your first week of school is awful; your korean isn’t great, so it’s hard to find your classes and navigate the city without yuna, who went to a different university for her music major. it doesn’t help that you had to pile up on morning classes for your requirements, despite your bad habits of sleeping in.
you find that one effective method of destressing is visiting at the cafe only a few minutes away from your shared apartment. your sweet tooth always gets the better of you, and you can’t resist ordering a sugary drink, whether it be a caramel macchiato or strawberry smoothie. you find yourself going to the cafe on a daily basis, usually right after your classes are over. just for fun, you decide to try to order everything on the menu at least once.
you quickly become a regular customer, and you instantly notice when something in the cafe changes. and halfway through the semester, the barista who usually takes your order -- a quiet girl named jiwoo who always seems to be in a bad mood -- switches to a big-eyed boy whose name tag reads ‘mark’ with a crooked smiley face.
the first day he starts working at the cafe, he stutters your order back to you and almost drops a cup as he scribbles down your name. but as he becomes used to working as a barista, he becomes a much more cheerful boy; he doesn’t say anything about your accented korean, whereas jiwoo would frown at your mispronunciations and ask you to repeat your order. he can instantly tell what kind of drink you want just by your expression; when you show up in a dripping raincoat and a gloomy face, he immediately rings up a hot chocolate, with extra whipped cream for good measure. and when you walk up to the register in a smile and bright outfit, he knows you’re in the mood for a smoothie. and he leaves little notes as he hands you your beverage with a grin: ‘have a nice day!’ ‘happy friday!’ ‘you can do it!’, all ending in a crooked smiley face matching the one on his name tag.
and without your knowledge, mark lee has a big, fat crush on you. he’s falling for you hard.
when the cafe starts to empty and you sit in a cozy corner with your textbooks and notebooks sprawled across the table, he admires you from afar as he wipes a dirty table. he admires you from the register when you scowl at notes from a lecture while studying for an upcoming test. he admires you while sweeping the floor when you start dozing off in the warm cafe with soft jazz music playing out its speakers, as the cafe approaches its closing hours. but the moment he loves most is when you grin at him as you choose your next adventurous drink, and the split second of your hand touching his as you hand him a few thousand won to pay for your beverage.
as finals week approaches and mark hands you warm lattes topped with cute misshapen hearts of milk and foam, you spend more and more time holed up at the cafe. you’re stressed out to the max, and you desperately want to pass your classes with good grades to make sure you moving out all the way to korea wasn’t a futile investment and waste of time. luckily, the cafe is where you can focus best, since the apartment is always blaring with yuna’s newest composition for her music classes that she apologetically explains she needs for her final project. the muted conversations of other patrons of the cafe, the clinking of glass, the soft music, and one special barista all help create a comfortable environment for you to study.
the monday before finals week, you arrange a study session at the university library with a few of the other international students in your classes. you’re well acquainted with vernon and joshua, two boys who always joke around even during lectures and never fail to make to smile. rose is a tall, pretty girl with a lilting australian accent who diligently takes notes and offers to help you study immediately when you tentatively approach her. the four of you decide on friday evening as the most convenient time to get together to cram for finals together.
of course, friday has to be the day it starts snowing.
you camp out at the cafe, your new haven, as you try to organize your scattered notes. you lose track of time as you highlight and underline your words, and the snow continues to fall outside. and from afar, mark watches you, mesmerized by the sight of you working, with your nose scrunching up every so often.
suddenly, you hear your phone buzz. you shuffle papers around, trying to find your phone underneath a stack of papers, and you blink at the notifications.
[ 5 unread messages from: rose ]
[ 2 missed calls from: vernon ]
[ 7 messages from: joshua ]
you groan and internally punch yourself in the face as you realize that you forgot about your study session, and you’re 15 minutes late.
you shove all of your pens, highlighters, notes, and books into your backpack and rush towards the cafe door as you call vernon back. ‘ohmygosh i’msosorryvernon i’ll be there in 5 minutes!’ you exclaim into the phone, hurriedly pulling on your parka as you walk as fast as you can without slipping on the snowy sidewalk.
mark, jolted out of his daze by the sudden jingle of the bell on the cafe door and the slam of the door shutting, sullenly heads to your abandoned table with a rag to clean up. as always, an empty cup is sitting on the table; however, in your haste to leave, you left your wallet on the table.
curiosity gets the better of mark, and he opens your wallet to find a few thousand won (you are a broke student, after all), a student id card, a polaroid of you and yuna that you took on your first day in korea, a tiny picture of your family, and a folded up post it note. the boy opens the post it note, which reads, ‘if found, please contact this number!’ with your phone number, the message written in both korean and english. he studies your student id card (he blushes, thinking, is this creepy?) and reads the label that declares you as an international student. he ponders on what to do; the cafe is scheduled to close over the weekend due to the heavy snow, and he knows it’ll be hard for you to make time especially during finals week.
taking a deep breath, he slowly pulls his phone out of his apron pocket.
it’s 10:49 pm, and your study session is coming to a close. the university library closes at 11, so you and your three classmates contentedly clean up the table littered with notebooks, laptops, and textbooks. the four of you studied for almost 5 hours straight, and for the first time in a while, you feel hopeful about your chances at doing well in college.
you’d turned your phone off to reduce its distracting notifications. as it awakens, your phone buzzes, and you frown at the unfamiliar number that has texted you.
[ 6:18 pm ] 010-127-0802: hello is this y/n?
[ 6:18 pm ] 010-127-0802: you left your wallet at the cafe, and the snow’s bound to get worse
[ 6:19 pm ] 010-127-0802: so i thought today would be the best time for you to get your wallet back
you groan; you must’ve forgotten your wallet as you were trying to get out of the cafe as fast as possible. you’re a little surprised (and relieved) that someone who seems to speak english fluently found your wallet; at least there won’t be an awkward conversation with your broken korean making an unwanted appearance.
[ 10:52 pm ] you: thank you so much! i didn’t even notice my wallet was gone haha
[ 10:52 pm ] you: when would be an okay time to come get it? isn’t it too late right now?
the unknown number texts back quickly.
[ 10:53 pm ] 010-127-0802: actually, i’m still near the cafe right now and it doesn’t close until 11:15
[ 10:54 pm ] 010-127-0802: if you have time, maybe we could meet up before it closes?
[ 10:54 pm ] you: alright, that sounds good. thank you again!
you wave goodbye to rose, vernon, and joshua as you trudge through the snow back to the cafe. you can’t help but wonder who found your wallet. you can’t help but shiver as you imagine a creepy old man who purposely led you to the cafe to kidnap you. or maybe it’s some middle school kid who stole all of your money to go to pc rooms and set you up to look like an idiot. kids these days have no manners.
at 11 pm, you arrive at the cafe, empty except for mark, who’s busy sweeping the floor. he glances up at you and quickly averts your gaze, furiously attacking the floor with his broom instead as he blushes. on the other hand, you’re surprised at the cafe’s emptiness; the person who’d found your wallet said they were near the cafe, and there’s only 15 minutes until it closes. you retreat back into your familiar corner and wait for your wallet’s return.
you languidly watch mark clean up the cafe alone as the minutes pass by. he finishes sweeping the floor and washes the last of the cups and dishes. as he hums along to the soothing music from the cafe’s speakers, he waters the tiny succulents on the windowsill and puts up all the chairs on the tables, passing by your table with a tiny smile that you return. but you grow more and more disheartened as it approaches closer and closer to 11:15.
at 11:15, you sigh and put your head down in your crossed arms. you’re worn out from studying, and you haven’t even gotten your wallet back yet. maybe it really was a middle school jerk who wasted your money on snacks and games. you hear the skidding of a chair’s legs across the floor, and you realize it’s mark sitting in front of you. slowly, you look up, and your eyes widen as he pulls your wallet out of the front pocket of his apron. ‘sorry i took so long, y/n,’ he says with a sheepish smile.
you’re shocked: out of all the times you ordered a drink from mark, you could’ve been ordering in english instead of in your clumsy korean.
‘mark, why didn’t you tell me you could speak perfect english?!’ you exclaim. ‘that would’ve made my life, like, 500 times easier, you know.’
the boy shrugs with another sheepish smile. ‘i don’t know… there’s a lot of international students around here that can’t speak english. like there’s a french international school right down the street. i just wasn’t sure,’ he confesses.
you laugh. ‘okay, good point. but how are you so good at english, then?’
‘i lived in canada for a while before i moved here. i think it’s only been a few years since i’ve moved to korea, actually,’ he explains.
‘oh, i see! then why’d you move to korea?’
‘for college, i guess, because i’m a music major. actually, your friend yuna is in my composition class! you guys are close right?’
your eyes widen. ‘how’d you know that?’
‘w-well, you had a photo with her, in y-your wallet, you know,’ he sputters. ‘i wasn’t trying to be creepy or anything, i promise! i just noticed she was a familiar face.’
‘okay, whatever you say, mark,’ you giggle. ‘speaking of which, i should start to head home, yuna’s probably getting worried by now.’
mark quickly stands up from his seat. ‘wait! i’ll walk you home,’ he exclaims. ‘it’s not safe to walk home alone at this time of night, you know. like what if you get abducted by some creepy stranger? or what if--’ he gasps ‘--you slip on a piece of ice, and you crack your head open, and no one finds you until tomorrow morning?’
you cringe at the mental image that pops into your head. ‘fine, come with me,’ you pout. mark just grins and grabs his jacket and backpack from behind the cafe counter. after double checking that the speakers are silent, the lights are shut off, and the cafe entrance is locked, he announces, ‘alright, let’s get out of here!’
it’s a brief walk to your apartment complex, but you quickly learn that mark is aspiring to produce his own songs and that he can play the guitar. although apprehensive at first, he quickly warms up to you and shows his witty side, making bad jokes to make you laugh. finally, you reach the door to your apartment, and you and mark awkwardly mill about, not wanting to leave the other.
‘anyway,’ you finally say with a bright smile, ‘thanks for walking me home. and thank you more for finding my wallet! i seriously don’t know how to repay you.’
mark smiles that shy, sheepish smile again. ‘you don’t have to repay me, it’s the least i could do,’ he says gently.
you’re not sure what overcomes you, but suddenly you have an idea. ‘well,’ you say cheerfully, ‘this is the least i could do.’
you stand on the tips of your toes, and right then and there, you give the boy a peck on his cheek flushed from the cold winter air. you smile as his round eyes grow even rounder and meet yours.
you turn around and punch in the code to unlock your apartment door, trying to hide your blushing cheeks and growing smile. you hear mark tentatively say, ‘hey, y/n?’
shyly, you turn again to face the boy, who slowly approaches you until you’re backed up against the door. his eyes beg for permission, and you give a tiny yielding smile that he returns as his face comes closer and closer to yours. and then he kisses you, pressing his warm lips onto yours, his mouth tasting of caramel and his body smelling of fresh coffee. you can’t help but close your eyes, running your hands through his fluffy hair as you press back into him. mark smiles into your lips and finally pulls away after what feels like an eternity in heaven.
slightly out of breath, you only manage to whisper, ‘good night, mark,’ before disappearing into your apartment and slamming the door shut. slumping against the door, you feel your cheeks and ears burning from the kiss, and your heart feels like it’s racing at 100 miles per second.
mark, leaning on the other side of your door, is astonished by his own actions. where’d he manage to muster the courage to kiss you? he hasn’t even asked you out to a date yet. groaning, mark pulls out his phone and reopens your text conversation.
[ 12:26 am ] 010-127-0802: uhhhhh are you free anytime after finals week?
[ 12:26 am ] 010-127-0802: i kind of forgot to ask you out on a real date
your phone buzzes, and you read mark’s messages with a thumping heart.
[ 12:26 am ] you: sure, sounds good
[ 12:27 am ] you: except during finals week
[ 12:27 am ] you: whatever just get home safe for now you dork
[ 12:27 am ] 010-127-0802: your wish is my command ;)
you can’t help but grin at the thought of mark taking you out on a date. you realize his number still doesn’t have a contact name, so you save it is ‘mark :)’. maybe studying abroad in korea won’t be as awful anymore.
god, you’re falling for mark lee hard.

1.      Keep physical reminders around
_You can keep these reminders in your bag, in your study area, in your car, wherever you’re at most frequently! A huge motivation of mine is South Korea, because I studied abroad there, fell in love, and hope to return for a longer-term stay. So, I keep a globe of the N Seoul Tower on my desk to look at when studying turns to just dying. As another example, I could clip a small Korean souvenir key chain with my car keys.
2.      Envision achieving your future goals
_…and then express this vision through a creative story, mood board, drawing, fashion, etc. If you want to work for a big company one day, you could dress more business-casual next time you go out to school (or wherever you like!).
3.      Research companies you’d love to work for
_Look up reviews or testimonies from current and past employees. Glassdoor is a good website for this; you can look up different companies and it will show you detailed reviews from employees. These reviews can even be broken down by positions (so you can compare what it would be like to work in the Marketing versus Finance department).
4.      Look up your dream home
_Start with the place(s) you’d like to live in, and then look up real estate in the area to see how much your dream life costs. Don’t just focus on the finances though; see how the neighborhood is and what fun things there are to do nearby!
5.      Read an interesting article/book or watch a video on your preferred topic
_Maybe you’re a stressed out biology student, but try to remember the cool/fun side of science! You could look up animal facts or interesting animal research videos, read about a new discovery in the science world, or read a sci-fi book.
6.      Backtrack
_Look at your past achievements: past awards/recognition, transcripts from a term where you got your best grades, Dean’s/President’s List letter, welcome letter from your school’s honors program/society, job/university acceptance e-mail,etc.
7.      Remember your responsibilities
_If you have any academic scholarship(s), odds are you have to keep your grades above a certain criteria. So, get to it!
8.     Make a motivational song/video playlist
_Add songs that get you fired up or your favorite TED talks.
9.     Look to the motivational people in your life
_Have successful parents/friends/professors that you’re super proud of? Let their stories inspire you. Or, look up other people’s success stories in your preferred field (especially those who had to overcome extreme obstacles to get there).
10.   Have a satisfying conversation
_We’ve all experienced those long conversations that make us feel good afterward. Talk to a favorite professor, friend, or even a favorite studyblr (pick mee) about school, careers, and life in general.
11.   Bribe yourself
_Sometimes we just need to promise ourselves a day of shopping, a cheat day, a day in bed watching movies, or whatever to keep us going ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
12.   Socialize wisely
_As in, get together with classmates to study. Sometimes we need our feelings to be validated, so de-stress by ranting to each other about the homework and tests- and then help each other LEARN IT!
_If meeting up with people isn’t possible, look up “study with me” videos on YouTube. I thought this was kind of weird, but sometimes friends just can’t meet up and studying next to someone really helps me focus. Sometimes this is the next best thing, okay? 😂
13.   Treat yourself
_…to a new notebook, set of pens, highlighters, sticky notes, etc. New notebooks especially motivate me because you can write just about anything in ‘em. They can become bujos, dream journals, diaries, grimoires, space for your studies, a place for your fiction drafts, whatever you want!
14.   Scroll through studyblrs/grams
_Like the one you’re looking at now! :D hii
15.   Create your own studyblr/gram
_I started this blog mostly to help myself, tbh. I mean, I hope this blog inspires you all, but I assure you I’m probably the one who needs the most organization in her life 😂. Having a studyblr means making time to create original posts, reblog, and becoming involved in the community. Its definitely helped me study because my notes are basically useful content for my blog.
16.   Start a bullet journal
_Or buy a pretty planner if you’re not that creative or too much of a perfectionist to start right away. Seriously, it doesn’t have to be perfect. Even if you want to post pictures of your spreads on your blog, you have time to get a nice theme going. So just start it, regardless of how your handwriting or drawing skills are at the moment. It will ALL get better with time and practice.
17.   Self-teach
_Sometimes we need to get out of the classroom and find the joy in learning about the world through our own experiences. Its why we played as children. I used to love learning new languages and how to play instruments on my own, so I make time for it in my busy schedule.
18.   Volunteer
_…at a high school or elementary school. Being a mentor to younger students can remind you why you wanted to do what you’re doing now. It’s good for reflecting. You can also tutor students at school to get back in the academic zone.
19.   Mental health is important
_Sometimes a lack of motivation can mean more than simple student stress. Take care of your mind and seek help if you need it.
20.   Be grateful
_Remember that being a student is a huge privilege, so enjoy the heck out of it while you can!
hope these tips help! what keeps you motivated?

Hi guys my name is Allysa Bautista Aggabao. My family  and friends call me "Ally", you can call me that too. I lived in Cubag, Cabagan, Isabela. I was born on November 22,2003 at Milagros District Hospital. I'm 16 years old turning 17 this November 22. My height is 5'6 and I'm 132 pounds. I'm the youngest child of Tiburcio Aggabao and Marites Aggabao. I have an elder brother and elder sister, Kenneth B. Aggabao and Marjorie B. Aggabao.  One fact, I'm more closer to my elder brother than my sister because me and my sister are like aso't pusa which means we're always fighting and also I'm a papa's girl. In pre-school I studied at Cubag Elementary School while in junior high school I studied at Delfin Albano High School- Main Campus. I was an awardee from pre-school to junior high school. Now, I'm studying at Saint Paul University Philipines as a Grade 11 student taking ABM strand. I want to be a Flight Attendant someday and I also want to travel around the world.I want to go to South Korea, Paris, Singapore, Amsterdam, New Zealand, Australia and Japan to see their famous landmarks and to taste their delicious foods. Like tteokbokki famous street food of Korea and their Nami Island, Eifel Tower in Paris, Merlion Statue in Singapore, The bloom of tulips in Amsterdam, Sky Tower in New Zealand and the beauty of their nature, Sydney Opera House in Australia and also Japan for their famous Mt. Fuji. I'm extrovert but always introvert. One fact, I'd prefer staying alone in my room and play some chill musics than going outside. I'm a girl but i'm not into girly things. I prefer wearing hoodies than wearing sleeveless. I prefer wearing sneakers and rubbers than wearing high heels. I prefer wearing jeans and shirt than wearing sexy dresses. Pastel colors makes my mood lighter and calm. One fact, I'm good in dancing but bad in singing. Watching sci-fi and fantasy movies makes me amazed and it makes me more interested than watching romantic movies. I love to watch mukbang videos especially the Filipino mukbangers. I also love to watch kdramas and I'm a fan of korean group named BTS. I'm more interested in spicy foods than sweet foods and my favorite food is chicken curry with chili on it. I love to drink iced coffee and milk tea in this cold season and add more donuts, perfect combination. I prefer to stay in a dark room than stay in a bright room because it makes me feel so comfortable. I'd rather go eat street foods than go to a fancy restaurant. I spend my time surfing in social media, making some tiktok videos, playing ukulele, reading wattpad stories and working out. I love to go to the beach and watch sunset together with the calming sound of waves. Lastly, my pet peeves are those people who don't know how to say thank you and don't know how to appreciate someones effort.
1. 10 years from now I see myself in an airplane serving, giving instructions and announcing the take off to the passengers while wearing my flight attendant uniform. Yes, my learning in SPUP is vital to where I'm leading to because they are the one who have the ability to further improve my skills.
2. Yes, I chose this strand because this is connected to the course I will take in college. ABM is hard but it's a learning process and I know it will be worth it at the end of the day.
3. I will take HRTM because I want to work abroad or become a Flight Attendant someday. I don't care about the  salary as long as it makes me happy, I will do it.
4. I want to improve my skills in making creative presentations in MsWord and Powerpoint and I want to learn more about the computers. I also want to learn how to retrieve a hacked account because maybe in the future I can help someone.
5. Corona virus taught me that we need to be more knowledgeable and patient in all aspects. It taught me to love, to care, to respect and to help who is need. It also taught me how important kindness is and during this chaos we should all stick together. Everything can end tomorrow and there is always a rainbow after the rain.

Breast Augmentation Cosmetic Surgery 2020
What You Need to Know About Breast Augmentation Cosmetic Surgery
Thousands of women in the UK looking to enhance their appearance and self-esteem opt for breast augmentation every year, which makes it the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure.
In 2018, the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) reported a six percent increase in breast enlargement procedures over a 12-month spell.
Breast Augmentation, Breast Implants and Breast Lifts
If you’re thinking about having breast enhancement surgery, you may be wondering whether there’s a difference between breast augmentation/enlargement and breast implants, and whether breast lifts fall into either of these categories.
The terms breast augmentation and breast implants are used interchangeably. Augmentation (or enlargement) describes the end result, while implants are the devices plastic surgeons use to achieve it.
Breast implant augmentation has been performed since the 1960s and typically uses saline or silicone implants to improve volume, size and shape.
Another, less common form of breast augmentation cosmetic surgery is fat transfer, which achieves a relatively small increase in breast size. It entails a liposuction procedure that takes fat from other areas of the body and injects it into the breasts.
No implants are used for breast lifts. The procedure involves manipulating tissue to tighten and lift the breast to counter sagging.
Pros and Cons of Saline and Silicone Breast Implants
Saline implants are shells containing sterile salt water. Silicone implants hold silicone gel within a silicone casing. Saline and silicone are both found naturally in the body. Both types of implants come in different sizes with either textured or smooth shells.
Silicone implants are more common in the UK, and many women report that silicone implants feel more natural.
Advantages of silicone breast implants include:
Made with medical-grade silicone tested for safety and used in other surgical procedures such as prosthetic implants.
Firm or soft gel options.
Silicone remains inert in your body, avoiding problems of reaction or rejection.
Approved by the British Association of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS).
A potential disadvantage of silicone breast implants is that a ruptured implant can be difficult to detect and the substance stays in the body, possibly travelling beyond the breast.
Advantages of saline breast implants include:
May require a smaller incision – saline implant casing is always filled after it’s placed, while silicone implants can be filled either beforehand or during the procedure.
Any leakage can typically be detected sooner than silicone implant breakdowns.
Less risk in the event of leakage – the saline would pass through your body or be safely absorbed.
Slightly firmer feel.
Volume can be adjusted during the procedure.
A disadvantage of saline implants is that they may feel and look less natural than silicone implants.
Breast Implants Combined with a Breast Lift
A rising trend is to combine breast implants with breast lift surgery, particularly among women who’ve had children.
Significant changes the body undergoes during and after pregnancy often include loss of volume and shape. While breast enlargement improves fullness and can increase cup size, a breast lift makes breasts firmer and more buoyant.
A breast lift also solves the problem of severely drooping breasts, which breast enlargement on its own can’t fix.
Breast lifting is often performed at the same time as augmentation but in some cases may require a separate operation.
Benefits of Breast Enhancement
The results of breast enlargement depend on many factors, including:
Whether you choose silicone or saline implants.
Shape and size of the implants.
Your overall body shape.
The outcome of breast augmentation and breast lifts is generally perkier, fuller breasts that are more symmetrical and attractive.
Most women say their clothes and particularly their bras fit better after breast enhancement. A study by the University of Florida found that breast augmentation cosmetic surgery boosted patients’ self-regard and reinforced their feelings about their sexuality.
Typical, specific benefits of breast enhancement include:
More projection and greater fullness of the breasts.
Better balance of hip and breast contours.
Long-term solution – breast implants last from 7 to 12 years on average.
Where Can I Go for Breast Augmentation Cosmetic Surgery?
Breast enlargement implants are only available on the NHS in exceptional circumstances, so you’ll need to find a private cosmetic surgery breast augmentation clinic.
The good news is that there are plenty of breast implant surgeons to choose from, both here in the UK and abroad.
Top breast enhancement clinics and be found in many major cities in England, including:
London.
Birmingham.
Manchester.
Further afield, there are highly-rated breast augmentation clinics in many countries, including:
Turkey.
USA.
Thailand.
South Korea.
You will find a selection of breast augmentation surgery specialists at the end of this article.
Which Type of Breast Implants Are Right for Me?
Deciding on which type of breast augmentation is right for you calls for careful consideration and advice from a skilled plastic surgeon.
A breast augmentation cosmetic surgeon can help you decide between silicone and saline implants, taking into account factors such as.
Your current breast shape and size.
Your age.
Condition of your breast tissue.
Your medical history.

If you want the 'perfect breast’ then Dr Patrick Mallucci is probably the man to go to. He has dedicated his professional life to the aesthetic of the breast and actually undertook a major study on what were the perfect proportions for a woman’s breasts. He also deals with other parts of the anatomy but his speciality is the breast and he is right at the top of our London listings for this kind of surgery.

« biography » Kang Kisung married Lee Minha in the early 80s when they were still very young. His parents didn’t approve of the marriage, but Kisung refused to give up on her. At first, his family refused to see them but when Ilsung was born in 1988, they had a change of heart. Fast forward twelve years, and Kisung and Minha had a beautiful family of four sons. Kisung became Chairman of the family law firm but continued to dedicate most of his life to his family.
In 2001, Minha died in a car accident. She left her husband crushed and her sons, who were only 13, 10, 7, and 5, devastated and afraid without their mother. Kisung was unable to pick up the pieces and threw himself into his work, often leaving his sons in the care of nannies and tutors.
Ilsung, the first son, became the main caretaker for his brothers since he was the oldest. He took on more responsibility while maintaining high grades in school to make his father proud. His efforts went largely unnoticed, though, until he was already in law school and on his way to becoming a practicing attorney on the same path his father took.
Woosung, the second son, also followed Ilsung and his father’s lead and studied hard in school to be noticed by his father. However, as he got older and saw the way his brother bent over backward for their father without anything in return, Woosung changed. He developed different interests in finer, expensive things and took his studies in law school only half-seriously. It was because of the family name that he was able to graduate and become an attorney at the law firm.
Jaesung, the third son, blamed his mother for her death and hated his father for leaving them. He gave the help the most trouble out of all his siblings when he was young and as he grew up, he rebelled in more serious ways. He spent his family’s money as he wanted and got himself into trouble often. Even though he became a law student like his brothers, Jaesung detests the idea of becoming an attorney like their father and purposefully tries to fail his studies.
Hosung, the youngest son, was too young to understand what happened to his mother and he adored his father who only showed minimal attention to the youngest because of his age. He idolized his brothers, even when they did wrong, and became closest to Ilsung because of the way the eldest brother took care of him. As he grew older, Hosung also entered law school, but his dream is to become a writer rather than an attorney, so he does the least amount to get by in his studies and focuses on his dream instead.

American high school-age language learners:
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) application portal is open as of Saturday, August 26, 2017! If you are:
an American citizen (even if you live abroad)
a high school student (grades 9-12, including home school)
between the ages of 15 and 18 (born between July 10, 1999 and June 10, 2003 for summer programs; between September 20, 1999 and June 30, 2003 for academic year programs)
enrolled in high school, with a grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent
not an immediate family member of an employee of the U.S. Department of State who works in the Youth Programs Division of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs or an employee at a NSLI-Y administering organization whose duties involve the NSLI-Y program
have not previously traveled outside the U.S. on a long-term (more than eight weeks) program sponsored by the Youth Programs Division of the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA)
and, most importantly,
interested in the study of languages
you should consider applying!
NSLI-Y provides scholarships to students interested in learning “critical” languages--that is, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), Hindi, Korean, Persian (Tajiki), Russian, and, as of summer 2018, Indonesian*. Students spend a summer (6-8 weeks) or an academic year** (8-10 months) intensively studying the language of their choice in a country where it is spoken. These countries include Morocco, Jordan, China, Taiwan, India, South Korea, Tajikistan, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Indonesia.
*Formerly, Turkish was a NSLI-Y language. Unfortunately, NSLI-Y has not implemented its usual programs in Turkey since summer 2015.
**Neither Persian (Tajiki) nor Indonesian scholarships are offered for the academic school year.
NSLI-Y scholarships are full scholarships. If your application is successful, all expenses are covered by NSLI-Y: airfare, food, shelter, transportation, language classes, and cultural excursions/field trips, etc.
In order to apply for NSLI-Y, you must submit an online application (click here for details about the application) by November 2, 2017, 4:00 pm EST, and submit your teacher letter of recommendation and parent statement by November 9, 2017, 4:00 pm EST. This is the first stage of the application process. If you become a semi-finalist, you will then schedule an interview, after which date you will learn if you are a NSLI-Y finalist (meaning that you were awarded the scholarship) (click here for details about the timeline).
NSLI-Y is an amazing opportunity. As an alum of the NSLI-Y Turkish summer and Arabic academic year programs, I am more than willing to answer any questions you may have about the application process or about NSLI-Y programs! :)

WEEK 3 RECAP: 9 min mile, SZA, and The Red Poop Scare
This week was not very eventful. Sorry to say folks, but it’s not going to be exciting all the time right? You have to have boring/uneventful days to balance out the exciting ones. I guess it makes you appreciate them more... But regardless of this fact, I still am going to write about the week due to the fact that I’m trying to stay consistent and make blogging feel like a habit/hobby, rather than a chore (at times). If you keep reading and get to the end of this post, you the GOAT!
Tumblr media
Monday:
I was super exhausted this morning from the long weekend (visiting Longdong and Fulong)... I didn’t want to get out of bed and it took all of my strength to get up and climb down the ladder from my bunk bed. I also was still recovering from the first real sunburn I’d had in years, so pulling on my sports bra and t-shirt this morning was definitely a wake up call. In class we had our third test of the course. It was definitely harder than the previous two, but I still think I did well. Class dragged on harder and slower than ever before... I found myself counting down the minutes until 1:10pm.. and it seems like I wasn’t the only one hehe
Tumblr media
At the gym it was floor day/abs. So I did mostly floor work with a matt. The weight lifting area of the gym is pretty small so usually when I use a matt I take it outside of the weight lifting room and do my sets in the hallway/foyer. But, there is no air conditioning out here so I find myself dripping sweat onto the matt and it’s just a mess.  ALSO!! I actually ran a mile today, in 9 minutes! That was my goal cut off time and I made it by the skin of my teeth. So I ran the 1.6 kilometers in 9 minutes... Not too shabby from last week ;)
For lunch Bunny and I grabbed potstickers to go (I got the curry flavor) and hopped on the bus to head home. We didn't feel like sitting and having lunch because we are still recovering from the weekend and were super tired. After I got home I hopped on FaceTime and caught up with Karis and some other loved ones. I wanted to take a nap, but I figured it might be better to just stay up so that I can sleep real good when I finally hit the hay. For dinner Bunny made rice, scrambled eggs, and we picked up some fried chicken from the food stand place by our dorm. I had bought a dozen eggs the weekend before in the grocery store, and they were going to go bad soon so we had to figure out what we were going to do with them. It turned out to be a really good dinner. I finished my blog post about Fulong today, and also did some personal journaling of my own before starting my homework. Today was a bit of a moody/emotional day, and I'm not sure why. But it feels good to write. It always feels good to write...
Tuesday:
So as it turns out, I got a 97% on my test from yesterday!!! Feelin’ good. Feelin’ like a smarty pants. We also had a written quiz today too on the dialogue. I got a 94% on that. I’m really starting to get the hang of writing traditional, and I’m actually glad I chose Taiwan as my study abroad destination, so that I could learn both forms of written Mandarin. I know it’ll pay off in the long run when I’m making dem big bucks! Hehe (kidding)... ((kindof)).
Tumblr media
In the gym I ran another 9 min mile. It was also leg day (my favorite)!!... When I got home I bought my SZA ticket. I AM SO EXCITED YOU ALL HAVE NO IDEA. I have been listening to this woman for years now and she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves and I’m so happy for her :-’) I’ll be seeing her with Poirshea in Sacramento in September. Can't wait. Gonna die of excitement!!! P and I really bond over SZA and love her to death and I’m so glad we’re going to experience her music live together. Twin bonding at it’s finest.
Tumblr media
I miss you Twin!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sza is so adorable I just can’t!!!! Ugh.
Anways, for lunch the three of us went back to the soy sauce braised place, and filled up on udon noodles, veggies and tofu. I got it a bit spicier than last time.. and it was really really good. WAYY better than last time! For dinner I was still pretty full off of lunch, so Bunny and I went to the street market around 10:30pm to get some fruit and egg scallion pancakes. I NEED to learn how to make these pancakes at home because they're so dang good. I will make them everyday for every meal. BOMB.COM. Egg scallion pancakes are basically green onions, eggs, and dough in pancake form... sounds odd, but man is it tasty!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wednesday:
Today I jumped up out the bed at 9:52am like I was just ressurected from the dead. And for those of you who don’t know, my class starts at 10:20am. Bunny was still knocked out when I was startled out of bed.. so we found ourselves throwing on clothes and rushing out the door. We ran to the bus stop, and was only about 10 min late to our class. Thankfully our teacher wasn't upset or anything... But right after we arrived we had a quiz waiting on us at the do’
Tumblr media
I’m not sure about my grade yet, but I don’t think I did so well. I was drawing a lot of blanks because I was still frazzled from rushing this morning. After class we got something small to eat before the gym because at this point it's 1:30pm and I'm starVING!!! At the gym I did a really really quick back day, because there’s a class that meets in the gym at 2:20 on Mon/Wed/Fri so usually I have to do short workouts on those days.
After the gym we headed to a fruit stand to get mango smoothies and dragon fruit... *REMEMBER THIS*
I wasn't super hungry because of the food I had before the gym. And then we went home, did homework, took a nap, and watched netflix. At around 9 Bunny and I went to get potstickers at the place by our dorm. That place is the best ever.
Thursday:
This morning we actually woke up on time. We were even able to gnab some bread at the local bakery before class. I usually pair my morning bread with a tea of sorts... I’ve been drinking alot of green tea lately, and I really really love the green tea infused with passionfruit. So so good. But, I’ve come to find out on days that I don’t have any tea or milk tea, I get massive massive caffeine headaches. I used to get them alot when I would stop drinking coffee after a few days... But I didn’t think this would still happen to me because the caffeine amount in green tea is so much smaller... who knows. But nonetheless, the tea is worth it!!!
Tumblr media
We had a quiz in class today, and before the end of the three hour period, she sprang a test on us right there at the end. She did this because alot of us (4 out of the 9) will be absent tomorrow due to travel. There’s another student in our class (the Swiss guy) who’s going to Seoul, South Korea this weekend, and he left midway through our class. And then the three of us (Bunny, Nick, and I) leave for the Philippines tonight at like 2am.
Also in class I got called Beyoncé more than I wanted to... Our teacher first brought up Shakira, and asked us if we all have heard of her before (which obviously we have), but she just learned of this Columbian singer’s existence and was tickled/excited to share the news. She then brought up Beyonce and drew the conclusion that I look strikingly similar to the superstar mother of three. I can admit it is quite the compliment, but Lord knows she only thinks this because we are both lightskin, tall women. Hooray for racial insensitivity!!!
Tumblr media
At the gym it was leg day once again (it’s Thursday, duh!). I ended up running a 8:40 mile! I definitely shaved off some seconds. SO Proud. Drenched in sweat!
For lunch we went back to that Malaysian place with the sweet lady who showed us pictures of her 8month old grandson. I love her. I ordered the hot/sour Chicken with potato wedges... so incredibly bomb.
Tumblr media
Bunny and I went home after lunch and packed for our trip to the Philippines this weekend, as well as napped. I went to the bathroom and had the fright of a LIFETIME. Which brings me to the “Red Poop Scare” segment of this blog post....
I have had problems pooping regularly since I’ve gotten here, I think partly due to my change in diet and stress levels... but nonethless it has only just started to get more regular/consistent. So just IMAGINE my shock when I went to handle my business and my poop was RED!!! I’m talking BRIGHT RED/MAGENTA!!! I thought I was dying!!! Blood in my stool??? Can you IMAGINE!!! I would have had to find a doctor here in Taiwan and omg the HORROR. But when I was handling my business there was no pain or strain or anything... so it was also pretty confusing. After I went back into the room and talked to my roommate I realized that I had DRAGONFRUIT YESTERDAY!!! Which is conveniently the same exact color as my poop. So that was exciting and a relief to realize. It was only that color because of the fruit I had the previous day. THANK YOU JESUS I AM ALIVE AND HEALTHY AND IT WAS NOT BLOOD.
Tumblr media
....I’ve come to realize that maybe this segment of the blog is a bit TMI... but I also told myself that if I’m going to blog, It’s going to be as open and honest and transparent as possible.. everyone has poop probs am I right???
Anyway,
We also did a quick run to the night market before taking the MRT to the airport. At the night market we got some more food to eat because we knew the journey to get to Philippines would be long. We were to land at 4am. And we left to the airport around 10:15pm. It takes about 45-hour to get to the airport, plus we wanted to allow enough time to check in, go through security, etc before our plane departed at 1:45am.
Here’s some pics of the wanton/noodles I bought and the really really good burger I had at the Night Market.. THE BURGER MIGHT BE BETTER THAN IN-N-OUT DONT @ ME
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ll come back with another post about the Philippines!
until then, xoxo

I wouldn’t be staying true to myself if I didn’t address my underlying need for more.
Teaching has in fact been a rewarding career that is providing me fulfillment that I’ve never felt before.  That I’ve craved. But being that I’ve never been one to entertain complacency I still want more. The fulfillment I seek has grown deeper and teaching in my current context just isn’t hitting that new spot. I’ve asked myself if this is just what they say about the human race never being satisfied and always wanting more. This saying used to strike me as negative, almost sounding like it was insinuating that we don’t spend enough time counting our blessings, but now I see that it shouldn’t be negative at all. Wanting more, and more, is a reflection of your development/awareness. If you aren’t satisfied with your life you should never settle even if it means going from one adventure to the next. That awareness you’ll be gaining is what will help you figure out exactly what it is that brings you fulfillment. Also, don’t be afraid to admit that something you thought was for you no longer is. In my case, I do still want to be in the role of a teacher just not necessarily in a classroom and definitely not teaching English.
I’ve decided to merge my love for teaching/helping others with my love for nutrition/wellness/health and am pursuing entrepreneurship as a Holistic Nutrition Coach. My specialty will be in plant based nutrition and sport and fitness nutrition. I’m so excited! I’ve always known that my end goal would be self-employment but never knew how and what. Now it’s clear and it only took coming all the way to South Korea to figure out. Lol.
As for my time in South Korea so far it’s only been getting better and better. I’m much more comfortable, and familiar, with my surroundings and I’ve been meeting some extraordinary people that I’m learning from and that are inspiring me. Your vibe attracts your tribe right? I think I noticed a difference when the culture shock symptoms subsided. After returning from my trip in South Africa I had so much time to myself as students were still on vacation. While the students are on vacation, contract teachers are still expected to report to school, and desk warm. Desk warming, aka. time to read, catch up on tv shows (if that’s your thing), rest, paint your nails, plan your next trip, take a course online, reevaluate your life. I’d say I did a little bit of everything but mostly the reevaluate part. My mind was so restless because career wise, personal development wise, and spiritually I felt like I’d hit a wall or plateaued. Uh oh, I’m starting to feel bored again… how much longer can I really see myself doing this? I want more, I need a break through. I want to develop MY livity.
So half way through my desk warming days I finally opened up to a friend about how I’d been feeling and we had a much needed constructive conversation. He said some things that I needed to hear. He reassured me that I was getting close to finding my livity. He reminded me that, now, more than ever it’s important to meditate, reflect, repeat. He was right, I hadn’t yet put enough effort into meditating regularly and I believe this was a missing component to resolving my creative blockage. The day after our conversation I found an app, called Headspace, that has been so useful for me. I’ve meditated everyday since and this app makes it easy to do that. All it’s taken for me is 10 minutes a day. I’m on my 45th day of meditating everyday and I don’t ever plan on stopping. It’s now as integral to my day as exercising and fuelling my body with nutritious food. I have a new sense of purpose and direction and that’s thanks to having developed the ability to observe my thoughts versus getting consumed by them. It’s peaceful.
Along with meditating I am finally learning to swim!!! This is something that has always been on my list of things to do. I almost drowned when I was in the 4th grade, and as a result developed a fear of deep water, so learning to swim isn’t just learning to swim it’s pushing myself outside of my comfort zone and overcoming a fear. So, not only am I learning to swim but it’s in Korean. My instructor doesn’t speak English so I get basic translations from the other participants and watch closely to the instructor’s body gestures. But, for the most part if I don’t understand something I go on YouTube to hear the explanations in English. I think if my lessons were in English I’d be learning at a much quicker rate but I’m happy with how much I’ve learned already while basically teaching myself. I’m currently redoing level 2 and plan to go all the way to level 5 where we learn to dive. So cool!!
At this point, my plans for the future, as per where I’d like to live next, are up in the air but I’m comfortable with this. The last 5 months of my contract will be spent learning, traveling, launching my business, and of course blogging. I’ll soon be looking for participants for case studies in my nutrition course as well as to build my portfolio. Let me know if you or someone you know is interested in getting help with your fitness goals.
P.S. I had such a lovely time this weekend that I thought I’d share pics– keep scrolling.
Hetep~
Update …7 months abroad… I want more. I wouldn't be staying true to myself if I didn't address my underlying need for more.

The Covid-19 Riddle: Why Does the Virus Wallop Some Places and Spare Others? (NYT) The coronavirus has killed so many people in Iran that the country has resorted to mass burials, but in neighboring Iraq, the body count is fewer than 100. The Dominican Republic has reported nearly 7,600 cases of the virus. Just across the border, Haiti has recorded about 85. In Indonesia, thousands are believed to have died of the coronavirus. In nearby Malaysia, a strict lockdown has kept fatalities to about 100. The coronavirus has touched almost every country on earth, but its impact has seemed capricious. Global metropolises like New York, Paris and London have been devastated, while teeming cities like Bangkok, Baghdad, New Delhi and Lagos have, so far, largely been spared. The question of why the virus has overwhelmed some places and left others relatively untouched is a puzzle that has spawned numerous theories and speculations but no definitive answers.
Battered global tourism industry makes reopening plans (AP) Six months ago, the global tourism industry was celebrating a record year for travel. Now, it’s decimated and facing a recovery that could take years. Tourism Economics, a data and consulting firm, predicts global travel demand won’t resume its normal pace until 2023. The road to recovery will be long and hard for the tourism industry. The United Nations World Tourism Organization predicts global tourist arrivals—or visits from tourists who come to their destinations and stay at least one night—will fall 30% this year from the record 1.5 billion in 2019. Airlines have grounded nearly two-thirds of their planes as passengers vanish. Cruise ships are docked; some won’t sail again until November. Millions of people who depend on tourism are laid off or furloughed. In the U.S. alone, an estimated 8 million tourism-related workers are jobless right now, or about one-third of total U.S. unemployment, said Roger Dow, the president and CEO of the U.S. Travel Association.
Don’t Forget the Other Pandemic Killing Thousands of Americans (The Daily Beast) Amid social distancing, authorities nationwide are reporting a surge in fatal opioid overdoses. Addiction and recovery advocates say the U.S. is now battling two epidemics at once. From 1999 to 2018, opioid overdoses involving prescription and illicit drugs have killed nearly 450,000 Americans. (One recent study found an additional 99,160 opioid deaths, previously unreported because of incomplete medical records.) Montgomery County, Ohio—which is home to Dayton and was considered the country’s overdose capital in 2017—is reporting a 50 percent jump in overdoses over last year. Coroner Kent Harshbarger told one local news outlet: “March had around 42 which, our normal baseline is somewhere in the 20s usually. So 42 is a significant increase.”
Supreme Court meets by phone (AP) It’s a morning of firsts for the Supreme Court, the first time audio of the court’s arguments will be heard live by the world and the first arguments by telephone. The changes are a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has made holding courtroom sessions unsafe, especially with six justices aged 65 or older and at risk of getting seriously sick from the virus. The experiment beginning Monday could propel the court to routinely livestream its arguments. Or the 10 cases over six days could just be extraordinary exceptions to the court’s sustained opposition to broadening the audience that can hear, if not see, its work live.
Bolsonaro joins anti-democracy protesters (Foreign Policy) Embattled Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro joined anti-democracy demonstrators in front of his presidential palace on Sunday, as they called for the closing of the Supreme Court and a return to measures used during the country’s period of military rule. “We have the armed forces at the people’s side: the side of order, democracy, liberty,” Bolsonaro told the crowd. “Enough interference. We’re not allowing any more interference. Our patience is over.” On Saturday, former Justice Minister Sergio Moro gave eight hours of testimony to federal investigators, and turned over text message exchanges and other electronic communications as the case against Bolsonaro for interfering with the country’s federal police gathers pace.
Argentina’s debt woes (Foreign Policy) Argentina’s minister of Economy Martín Guzmán has called for a restructuring of the country’s debt obligations and for bondholders to accept a reduced return. Negotiations with Argentina’s bondholders, which include several U.S.-based institutional investors and hedge funds, have to date proved fruitless for the country.
Europe begins to cautiously reopen despite fears of new outbreak (Washington Post) Italy on Monday began a precarious economic reopening after facing Europe’s deadliest coronavirus outbreak, with people reemerging from their apartments and homes with a mix of relief and apprehension. The step out of lockdown was a modest one. Restaurants could reopen, but for takeout only. Funerals could resume, but capped at 15 people. Most significantly, many factories and construction projects restarted, with more than 4 million people—about a fifth of the Italian labor force—returning to their jobs. The steps taken by Italy come as just one part of a broader reopening across Europe. In Germany, several school grades returned to classes on Monday. France plans to restart schooling next week.
Drive-in confession (Worldcrunch) In France, where places of worship have been closed since March 17, a priest has introduced the concept of “drive-in” confessions—a first in the country—in the city of Limoges, Le Parisien reports. Father David de Lestapis, who was inspired by fast-food and open air cinema to create this initiative, sits for two hours outside every Saturday morning to listen to the parishioners who stay in their cars. “To welcome people and give them God’s forgiveness is one of the seven sacraments. Here, we are in the open and we respect safety distances, this is part of our role,” the priest told the French daily. France will start to loosen lockdown restrictions from May 11, but traditional in-church services might not be able to resume before the Pentecost celebrations at the end of the month.
‘Freed from prison’: Portuguese enjoy easing lockdown (Reuters) Portugal downgraded its state of emergency to a category of “calamity” on Sunday, as spring sunshine drew people outdoors and the rate of new coronavirus cases reached its lowest since the beginning of the outbreak. “It’s like being freed from prison,” enthused Rodrigo Garcia, 40, on a walk to Lisbon’s River Tagus with his wife, two sons and dog. “We’ve gone out here and there, but with the end of the state of emergency we feel much freer.” After a six-week state of emergency when people were urged to stay indoors except for brief exercise, and most non-essential services were shut, a three-phase reopening plan begins from Monday. But the temptation of 30 degree Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) temperatures and Mother’s Day had some taking to beaches and parks before then with newfound confidence. On Lisbon’s waterfront, runners and cyclists hopped out of each other’s way on Sunday morning.
Shopping—and selling (Reuters) In South Korea, shoppers and travelers crowded malls and beaches on the first long weekend since the country began easing coronavirus curbs last month. With early-summer weather helping retail therapy return with a vengeance, the term “bobok sobi”—revenge shopping—has trended on the nation’s social media, as people rush to make purchases delayed by social-distancing rules. In marked contrast to the euphoric spending seen in South Korea, for a growing number of Chinese hit by job losses, furloughs and salary cuts, the consumer economy has begun to spin in reverse. They are no longer buying—they are selling. Instead of emerging from the coronavirus epidemic and returning to the shopping habits that helped drive the world’s second-largest economy, many young people are offloading possessions and embracing a new-found ethic for hard times: less is more.
DHS report: China hid virus’ severity to hoard supplies (AP) U.S. officials believe China covered up the extent of the coronavirus outbreak—and how contagious the disease is—to stock up on medical supplies needed to respond to it, intelligence documents show. Chinese leaders “intentionally concealed the severity” of the pandemic from the world in early January, according to a four-page Department of Homeland Security intelligence report dated May 1 and obtained by The Associated Press. The DHS analysis states that, while downplaying the severity of the coronavirus, China increased imports and decreased exports of medical supplies. The report also says China held off informing the World Health Organization that the coronavirus “was a contagion” for much of January so it could order medical supplies from abroad—and that its imports of face masks and surgical gowns and gloves increased sharply.
Israel’s supreme court weighs Netanyahu’s fate (Los Angeles Times) With the fate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the line, Israel’s Supreme Court began discussions Sunday on the question of whether the embattled leader can form a new government while facing criminal indictments. The court’s decision, expected this week, is shaping up as a watershed moment in Israeli history. A ruling preventing Netanyahu from returning for another term would almost certainly trigger an unprecedented fourth election in just over a year and draw angry, perhaps violent, reactions from Netanyahu’s supporters accusing the court of inappropriate political meddling. A ruling in favor will be seen by critics as further weakening the country’s fragile democratic institutions and a victory for a prime minister bent on escaping prosecution.

Set Your Own Schedule as an Online English Teacher With These 7 Companies
When Micaela Hegarty lived in Sumter, South Carolina, she needed a way to pay the rent while she attended college online, but the local economy couldn’t provide.
Hegarty, 25, needed a flexible schedule to work around her classes, and the ability to take her work on the road. When she searched Indeed for jobs in her area, there weren’t many results. One listing did catch her eye, though: online English as a Second Language teacher. That gig would allow her to work from anywhere.
Hegarty doesn’t have a bachelor’s degree or any previous teaching experience. But she found a job anyway — and it paid more than $20 an hour.
“It was the highest-paid part-time job I’ve ever come across,” Hegarty said, “especially as a college student.”
ESL teachers are in high demand. To keep up, many online English education companies offer their teachers bonuses if they refer other teachers to their platform. And, overall, requirements to become an ESL teacher are low, especially if you want to teach English abroad.
Hegarty made the switch to in-person teaching in August 2018. She said her online experience helped her land a teaching job in South Korea through its government-run Teach and Learn in Korea program.
If you’re not feeling quite that adventurous yet, you can start to teach English online from the comfort of your home, just like Hegarty did.
Want to Teach English Online? Try These 7 Companies
Most of the companies below focus on primarily Chinese grade schoolers, meaning teaching hours tend to be in the early mornings or late evenings for U.S. time zones. That’s perfect to supplement a 9-to-5 job.
Some companies prepare lessons and schedule the classes for you. Others use less structured methods — log on whenever you have the free time and get matched with a student on a chat-pairing system. All of the companies below are listed with their Glassdoor ratings easily accessible. Because demand for English teachers is so high, there are a lot of less-than-reputable companies out there. As with any new gig, it’s important to vet each company to see which one will fit your schedule and income needs.
While required education and experience may vary by company, here are some things you will need for all online classes:
Erasable whiteboard and markers.
Props like charts, pictures, posters or stuffed animals.
A web camera.
A high-speed internet connection.
A computer, tablet or smartphone.
Once you’ve get those materials, you’re ready to start signing up and taking students.
(Note: Companies are listed in alphabetical order.)
Boxfish
Turn your spare time into a nice, crisp Andrew Jackson.
Since 2012, Boxfish has incorporated its English-language curriculum into middle and high schools across Beijing and now offers online English classes that are available all across China. According to its website, more than 5 million Chinese students use the online platform to learn English.
Boxfish provides all the course materials that teachers need to get started, so there’s minimal lesson prep.
There are three ways to rack up teaching time:
A prescheduled 25-minute class, ranging from one to four students.
An on-demand 25-minute class, where the teacher and student are automatically paired at random.
A one-minute feedback video response to a prerecorded student oral dictation.
Boxfish pays teachers $10 per 25 minutes. If your student is a no-show, you’ll still get $6 per class. (But if you fail to show up to a scheduled class twice, you’ll get the ax.)
All lessons can be conducted on a tablet or smartphone. So no computer is required, but a high-speed, stable internet connection is.
To qualify, you must have grown up in an English-speaking country and have a bachelor’s degree. Current accents that are in-demand are American, Australian, British and Canadian. An English teaching certification (aka TEFL or TESOL) is preferred, but not required.
Hourly Pay: $20.
Glassdoor Rating: 3.5 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: Native English fluency; a tablet, smartphone or computer with a web camera; high-speed internet and a bachelor’s degree.
Cambly
Don’t sweat it if you didn’t go to college. You can still teach English online without a degree (and in several countries, if you’re interested).
Cambly is unique in that it offers English tutoring sessions to students around the world, children and adults alike. For teachers, there’s no minimum amount of teaching time because the payment system works by the minute at a rate of 17 cents. In theory, it’s possible to earn up to $10.20 an hour.
While pay is notably less than other companies, Cambly is welcoming to new teachers of English as a Second Language without industry experience or a college education. Plus, the paychecks come weekly.
Creating a tutor profile is straightforward. To qualify, you’ll simply need a native level of English fluency, a computer with a webcam and a high-speed internet connection.
Once your profile is complete, students will be able to search you in an index of tutors.  The competition may make it hard to land lessons at first, but tutors can make themselves stand out by scheduling priority hours, which let students know who’s online and available to chat.
Hourly Pay: up to $10.20.
Glassdoor Rating: 4.2 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: Native English fluency, a computer with a web camera and a high-speed internet connection.
Gogokid
Depending on your qualifications, Gogokid is among the top-paying English teaching platforms on the web. While the job can be performed from anywhere, the positions are open only to Canadian and American citizens.
Teachers are given a base pay between $7 and $10 a class, depending on experience and their performance during mock lessons that are part of the prehiring interview process.
Classes are 25 minutes long, so it’s possible to knock out two within an hour. Teachers accrue ratings based on class quality and attendance that can bump their base pay 25% higher; pay can range from $14 to $25 an hour for teaching two classes.
Gogokid lays out the teacher-rating criteria, so there’s no guesswork involved. It also supplies the lessons and curriculum to cut down on prep time. But, as always, props are appreciated.
As with many teaching platforms, hours are based on China Standard Time. Students typically study English after their school day, so peak hours are on weekdays between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. China Standard Time and between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on weekends, according to the Gogokid website.
Teaching with Gogokid requires a bachelor’s degree in any field. A certificate to teach English as a foreign language isn’t required, but it wouldn’t hurt (especially if you’re hoping for the maximum hourly rate of $25).
Hourly Pay: $14 to $25.
Glassdoor Rating: 3.9 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: A bachelor’s degree, a computer with a web camera, a headset and a 20 MBps high-speed internet connection.
Italki
Are you as interested in learning a new language as you are in teaching one?
Italki has more than 5,000 teachers who specialize in almost any language, the most popular being English.
Using an on-site search function, students can sift through an array of teachers, sorting by hourly rates, credentials and several other criteria.
Language teachers can create one of two profiles: professional teacher or community tutor. As the name implies, the professional teachers have a more formal background in language teaching, but native speakers who want to earn extra cash are welcome to host lessons as community tutors.
What distinguishes Italki from numerous other language-learning websites is that teachers can set their own hourly rates (between $4 and $80 an hour). There are no minimum or maximum hour limits, either.
Another unique feature to Italki is the ability for users to have language exchanges for free. (So if you want to practice your Korean, you can search for a Korean-language speaker who wants to learn English, and start talking.)
Similar to most freelance websites, Italki makes its money through service fees, which are currently 15% of the lesson cost, according to Italki’s terms of service. After each lesson, your pay accumulates on your profile until you request a withdrawal, which takes up to 10 days.
Since more than 5 million international students use Italki, schedules are a little more flexible because they aren’t based on one particular time zone.
Hourly Pay: $4 to $80.
Glassdoor Rating: 4.1 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: Native fluency in any language, a computer with a web camera and high-speed internet.
Qkids
A big perk for most online English as a Second Language teachers is the ability to work from just about anyplace with a high-speed internet connection. However, with Qkids, ESL teachers are required to reside in the U.S. or Canada.
Regardless, there are several other unique aspects that make teaching English with Qkids worth your time if you plan on staying put in North America.
For example, Qkids does a lot of the scheduling work for you, and there’s no need to market yourself on the site like some other platforms require.
Teacher requirements are pretty flexible, too.
While the company prefers that teachers have previous teaching experience and certification, Hegarty didn’t have her bachelor’s degree (but was enrolled in college) when she taught with Qkids. She had no previous experience, nor a certification, and still earned $20 an hour. That’s because she received bonuses for performance and attendance on top of her base pay of $8 per lesson.
Like most similar sites, it’s possible to teach two lessons per hour, and those hours are likely to be in the early morning or late evenings, as the students — ages 4 to 12 — are based in China.
A minimum commitment to six hours (12 lessons) a week for six months is required to start teaching.
Hourly Pay: $16 to $22.
Glassdoor Rating: 4.3 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: Native English fluency, a residence in the U.S. or Canada, high-speed internet connection, a computer with a web camera and a minimum of six dedicated teaching hours per week.
Rosetta Stone
Rosetta Stone has been a mainstay in the language-learning world since 1992. While it’s best known for its educational software, it also dabbles in online tutoring.
At Rosetta Stone, the online English tutoring positions are considered part-time jobs. They provide more stability in terms of income because you’re guaranteed a certain amount of hours per week — usually between eight and 15, depending on the position. The company also offers its tutors bonus holiday pay and access to its 401(k) plan.
Regardless of location, all tutoring appointments are based on Eastern Standard Time (to avoid confusion, a spokeswoman said).
The trade-off, in comparison with some other platforms, is that you can’t teach on-demand hours at Rosetta Stone.
Another caveat is that the online tutoring positions are available only to U.S. residents with a bachelor’s degree or higher, but they are open to applicants nationwide. American and U.K. accents are welcome.
Hourly Pay: $15 to $22, according to Glassdoor.
Glassdoor Rating: 3.3 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: A U.S. residence, a bachelor’s degree, high-speed internet connection, a computer with a web camera and teaching availability on Eastern Standard Time.
VIPKid
In terms of Glassdoor rating, VIPKid is tied with other sites to make the list. But none comes close to the sheer number of reviews.
Since its founding in 2013, VIPKid has already amassed more than 1,200 anonymous Glassdoor reviews; most are overwhelmingly positive. Glassdoor recently rated it one of the “coolest companies for freelancers,” too.
The way VIPKid works is similar to all the other sites on the list: base pay for each lesson, two lessons per hour. The hours are also based on China Standard Time, as the students are Chinese grade schoolers. Minimal lesson prep is required. Its platform isn’t novel, but according to user reviews, it’s efficient and effective.
“I began working for VIPKid over a year ago because of its reputation of being one of the largest ESL companies in the market,” said Tim Gascoigne, a Canadian teacher who currently lives in Malaysia. “I found them to be the most reliable and consistent and knew people who worked for them already.”
To qualify, applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in hand (sorry, college students), one or more years of relevant experience and must be able to commit to a six-month contract.

Hourly Pay: $14 to $22.
Glassdoor Rating: 4.3 (out of five) stars.
Requirements: English fluency (non-native speakers allowed), a bachelor’s degree, a high-speed internet connection, a computer with a web camera and eligibility to work in the U.S. or Canada.
