I just thought everyone would like this. The “default” human in my biochem class was a female body. It’s something so small but this Kinda thing matters. It’s so common that a male body is shown as the default when studying biology and anatomy, so it’s refreshing to recognize the inherent bias.

I don’t want to go to college today. Spend 6 hours in biology and math classes. But so is life.
I’ll buy myself a snickers as a treat.

So I'm a second year PhD student now. I work in an organic lab, I work on photoclick chemistry and sequence defined polymers. I lso teach Organic Chemistry 1 labs. It's been a while. Grad school has been hard. I have been working 70-80 hour weeks for so long I don't know what it's like to be rested anymore. It took me seven months to complete one synthesis. However, I feel like an academic for the first time. I have finally started actively keeping up with literature, writing all my notes down, collecting textbooks, applying my own knowledge to make reactions...etc. Right now I'm making more of my starting molecule to make the backbone of my polymer, and there's a Friedel-Crafts stuff that is unbelievably difficult. I'm running a column on that right now. I'm also trying to manage my lab time better so I'm efficient.

I love being a biology major because all of my professors are fucking nerds I just had a doctor who is teaching me about conservation biology sign off her email with "may the force be with you"
last semester I had a professor that signed all his emails "sessuvium" (which is a species of plant that "goes with the flow" and can grow under intense conditions near oceans in high sodium soil) he also used pokemon in all his powerpoints and talked about his bisexual wizard dnd character while we were out in the field

while i'm on my soap box let me say as token stem major that the humanities are fucking important. end of.
and i could tell you the reasons for that (critical thinking, media literacy, cultural learning) but to be completely honest i don't think i should have to. i don't think something is uniquely important because 'taking xyz course in linguistics will help you with latin names in premed' because there is value in human experience even if it's not in the service of heart surgery or aerospace engineering.
let me grab you by the shoulders and tell you that humans are important. their experiences are important. the way they express those experiences are important. therefore there will always be value in art, literature, history, film - you name it. humanity is a beautiful thing. that is enough.

study diary —
It’s crunch time.
I have finals in Calc 3 and Physics this week and I do not feel prepared (but to be fair, I never do).
Today I’ve just been working through Calc 3 review problems - nothing wild or special. I decided to put this little shelf next to my desk last night because I’ve been running out of space.
I don’t think I’ll keep it there permanently, but it’s been very nice to have somewhere close by to put stuff I’m not actively looking at!
This post is sponsored by Goose, who I snapped a pic of mid-yawn and mid-stretch earlier - I am very fortunate.

Had panic attack because I misplaced my lab instructions booklet and keys. But I’ll do my best during break to finish the lab write ups anyways, and I figured out a plan to get home. That’s life. Yah fuck up, have a panic attack and temporarily regret your entire major, then go to school and talk with a friend online (who jokes about you being a twilight girlie… which ain’t 100% wrong unfortunately), and feel a little better and get on with your day.

Hi :3 My name is Mars, I'm a CS major at a North American university. MASSIVE math lover ! Would love to conduct research someday in math and/or physics to contribute to the field just out of passion.
Planning to use this account to blog/summarize everything I learn in study sessions to inspire and just to log. Hopefully, I can connect to more people who love the subject like I do and maybe make more people interested in the subject. :) Subjects you'll find here: college-level mathematics, coding language studies and physics (maybe others if they're required for my major, but these are the mains!)
Aiming to be studious more out of passion than sheer discipline. Not really here to make friends, but would LOVE to hear your love and thoughts in the comments and just have some chats !
Have fun and get motivated and productive here babe <3

I have intended to start posting here again. I am in my 2nd year of my Ph.D., doing organic synthesis and photoclick research. But at the same time, I think it's not only time to discuss my research, but where academia and scientific research is right now. In the US, there are stop work orders, NIH overhead cuts, funding freezes, research being scrubbed of "woke terms", and cuts to research involving justice, equity, researching specific demographics, medicine, climate change, alternative fuel, and even more. It's a terrifying time to be a scientist. My lab is mainly funded by NIH. All I feel in uncertainty. Scientific fact is fact. Well designed studies with good data collection and analysis are not wrong because they go against your views. You cannot make fact go away because you do not want to see it. To deny scientific fact is to deny reality and sanity. It is nothing but government control, to make the public believe the government and to squash opposition. We live in a time of fascism. To bend the knee of every citizen they have to deny fact. I am heartbroken at how ruined my research and PhD might be. I am full of hatred to what they are doing to us.

college is kinda crazy because I’m paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to subject myself to constant mental torment all because they won’t just suck it up and let doctors practice without degrees
