thank you for your analysis of him!! it's very interesting. especially the part where you mentioned him being a romantic because he's objectively perceived as a cold, cruel, emotionally unavailable person (which he was) but he clearly found grandiose motivations and purposes to justify his crimes. how self-aware do you think he was? and if he was made aware of the outcome of his quest for power, would he do it nonetheless? realistically what would it take for him to have a moral crisis or question his values? was he aromantic and repulsed by human connection by nature or did he actively suppress whatever humanity was left...or maybe just try to be perceived as not needing it? sorry for asking so many questions. i could spend hours attempting to unravel tom's psyche.

Hello Anon! Thank you for your questions. I want to address the first few in a different post, because I have a few different answers I want to discuss and don't want this post to run on forever. Is Tom Riddle Aromantic?

Before we delve into the intricacies of Tom Riddle's capacity for Romantic love, it is important for me to mention that we'll be disregarding the plot point of his inability to love due to his parents' love potion thing. Instead, our focus will be purely on his psyche and the effect that has on his ability to love. ( Because that's what this blog is for, and the whole love potion thing is silly in my humble opinion)

To address whether Riddle's beliefs and upbringing contribute to an aromantic disposition, I think we first have to consider his own capacity for romantic love. I'll be discussing his capacity for romantic love through the fact of his narcissism, a topic I've explored before here.

Riddle's psychology can largely be understood through the lens of pathological narcissism. While all humans present a public façade, for a pathological narcissist, the gap between this façade and their concealed self is particularly stark. Riddle's charm was a strategic tool to attract admirers who could feed his sense of self. This façade protects the false self from exposure, maintaining his grandiose self-image and fuelling his delusions.

Emotional intimacy is typically outside a narcissist's comfort zone as they are disconnected from their true feelings, driven instead by the need to uphold their grandiose persona. Narcissists often idealise their partners' admirable qualities, using them as a mirror for their own grandiosity. In this context, love becomes a means to an end—a way to support their self-image, making romantic love a form of supply for a narcissist.

Narcissists possess many qualities such as social confidence, likability, and charm, which are optimal for initiating relationships. However, these are coupled with traits like low empathy, a tendency to use others to maintain their false self-image, and overall self-centeredness, which are destructive to functional relationships. A narcissist's partner is usually objectified, unable to retain their own autonomy within the relationship. If the partner shatters the narcissist's illusion, they may become the target of contempt for disrupting the narcissist's grandiose perception they created of their partner. Essentially, the goal of such a relationship is the complete obliteration of the partner's autonomy.

Despite these challenges, it is important to recognise that narcissists can and do love, although their love sometimes differs from a healthy, unconditional relationship. Having established Riddle's capacity for love, we return to the question of his potential aromanticism. Possible reasons include:

While I do not believe Riddle was innately repulsed by human connection from birth, he likely developed this repulsion through his upbringing. His identity and beliefs were deeply intertwined with his blood status. Discovering his ancestry to Salazar Slytherin inflated his ego and sense of self, fuelling his delusions about an "idealised parent image." However, learning about his Muggle father shattered these notions, inducing an identity crisis and internal conflict. This conflict manifested in his actions, such as punishing his father and changing his name.

Rejection by the family he sought further shattered his grandiose self-image, deepening his mental breakdown. This rejection likely made him feel repulsed by the human connection he sought, leading him to view himself as above such needs. Despite his heritage being a construct to fuel his false-self, the search for a parent and creation of an "idealised parent image" is common among children lacking parental figures. This behaviour signifies Riddle's inherent humanity and need for connection, which he suppressed following the shattering of his idealised image.

According to Freud, human behaviour is more influenced by the unconscious mind rather than the conscious one. The unconscious mind, filled with painful memories, tries to protect the conscious mind by hiding them, influences attitudes, behaviours, and character. For Riddle, the painful memories of his corrupted heritage resurfaced, despite his unconscious mind's attempts to hide them. He then attempted to eradicate his past self, exemplified by his transformation into Lord Voldemort and his agenda concerning blood status.

This brings us to the final point: in eradicating his past, Riddle attempted to portray himself as devoid of human needs through his new persona, Lord Voldemort. ( in all honesty he done the opposite by doing that, just really announced his fear of his own humanity and his disgust of it.)

These points, stemming from his past, suggest that Riddle is most likely aromantic. While he is capable of love, albeit in an unhealthy way, he sees himself above the need for it and suppresses any potential need under the guise of repulsion due to the rejection he faced. TLDR : Tom Riddle is in fact Aromantic, and that was more or less caused by him getting his feelings hurt and choosing to suppress / act like he does not need humanity at all. Just going back to Anon at the beginning talking about how Riddle was a romantic, (which he was, it's a universal fact at this point) I do think it's hilarious how he chose the most 'teenage girl' items for his horcruxes. Diary boy really wanted to go all out and I can respect it.

Yamato is deeply in love with his childhood bestie, Kakeru, and has been for ages, unable to hide his ungainly damaging high school need. He wants Kakeru in every way possible and it oozes off of the screen. Kakeru is silly and a little simple, but not frenetic or overly camp about it. He is earnest, and genuinely wants to keep Yamato in his life which means giving a romance (and gayness) a fair chance. We watch him realize his affection and what form it can take in a truly authentic way. This show was impossibly kind to both of its lead characters and I felt almost honored that I got to watch something so lovely and rare play out on my screen. Full review.

Korea does an elegant pastiche of traditional live action yaoi but all tropes are cleverly deployed to bolster one of the most riveting love triangles ever put on screen… and I don’t like love triangles. LoM strategically tailors classic BL tropes to 2 different semes resulting in pristine pacing, plot, and character development, explicitly serving narrative (not just to tick boxes). LoM is a master class in this trope drops. (If you write fanfic or romance you should study this show.) Full review.

Korea took on early Japanese sweet yaoi but gave it their signature softness and precise production with a STUNNING color palette (beautiful pastels, sun-saturated over-exposure), manga framg style, some traditional BL character archetypes, that tiny edge of bullying roughness and out-of-control seme, plus FINALLY a palatable take on the stepbrothers trope and it was, in a word, classic. Sophisticated and understated CBAW is not slow, it’s just subtle. It's dream-like and atmospheric, as if the whole thing took place under cold water on a warm spring day. Is there plot or peril? Not really. Do we care? Also, not really. Look, I can’t help it, I’m old school and so is this show. I grew up reading sweet yaoi, and this was THAT YAOI just on my screen. There’s no objectivity with me and this show. It’s a beautiful pastiche and I loved it for how it made me feel and what it remded me of. It’s not flawless, but it is a wonderful experience. It’s a tiny bit dark and a tiny bit bittersweet, almost too honest to a university experience and first love for BL, but if you want your md ever-so-slightly messed with and your intimacy hellishly sweet, this BL will do it for you in a coldly distant manner, while bitch slapping you with self worth issues. I wasn’t into it at first, but the leads are solid and by ep 5 it got really good, becomg a narrative about self discovery meets understanding and accepting others people’s flaws without hurting them. Ultimately we witnessed two characters maturing because of each other and their mutual affection, without that affection becomg the conflict point. Instead, tension was built around other aspects of identity, popularity, and self-worth. While production values were a touch lower than usual for Korea, Bluemg included decent kisses and other forms of intimacy and a satisfying ending plus there’s judicious and very elegant use of tropes, this is a great BL. Perhaps sometimes too subtle, but I believe this is a great show for younger audiences, particularly if you want to spark conversations about identity, sexuality, authority, truthfulness, and consent. Oh and it’s funny.

GMMTV does gay Blacklist with a good boy/bad boy pairing. This is a good show but the cast is excellent and the leads are absolutely flawless, which elevates it beyond just good. We got a nuanced and multifaceted burgeoning relationship: philosophical (and socio-political) conflict contrasted to moments of empathy; flirtation contrasted to moments of genuine affection, plus plenty of angst. This narrative is less about love than it is about courage and tenderness. However, near the end the pacing was off and the plot frustrating. Still, this is an enjoyable watch, with a finale that features verbal consent and a fun blooper reel.

Frankly this probubly ranks along side most of hte runners up, but it's chronically under watched so I wanted to give it a special shout out.

A darn near perfect pulp featuring 3 likable grumpy/sunshine pairings with uncomplicated iterations of enemies to lovers. At least one half of each does a decent amount of pining and there’s good chemistry, classic tropes, and communication rep. It’s fun and full of linguistic jokes. Sublimely cheesy but a good rainy day offering with tons of rewatch potential. Full review.

but what about old bots with more sensitive joints and cabling?

maybe their minor fuel lines suffer stiffness during cold weather similar to how vascular construction from cold can cause circulation problems in human beings (Reynauds Syndrome, anyone?)

it would also be comparable to winter damage to rubber lines and materials in cars, where the cold causes the rubber components to become more brittle and less flexible over time -- might also affect tires

in TFA, they're all by Lake Erie/Detroit. cold as hell in winter. there's no way Ratchet is having a good time. his ass is out there unable to feel his servos for a good five months out of the year.

I know this, because I used to live just outside of Erie, in Allegheny. And holy fuck, my joints hurt just thinking about it. Now I live in England, where it's a different type of cold, but it fucks up my circulation and my lungs. lol

perhaps "breathing in" cold air through their cooling systems and fans might cause difficulty with internal temperature regulation, possibly even causing spark dysregulation in the way humans can suffer tachycardia/arrhythmia from extreme cold exposure.

When Cregan Stark arrives to impose justice at the end of the Dance, Larys offers no explanation for his actions and makes no attempt to negotiate exile. Instead, he requests execution, choosing to end his life on his own terms. This stark contrast to Cole’s desperate struggle for meaning reflects Larys’s fundamental detachment from the world and the people within it. Heh...or maybe I'm wrong, but Harrenhal's arc and the Strong were fun!

The Strongs lost their lord and heir in Lyonel and Harwin before the war AND during the war [SPOILERS!!!] they will be totally destroyed Aemond. I wouldn't say that whatever effects that are told to have ruined all the other houses who took over skipped over the Strongs. Not at all. Perhaps HotD's making it so that the bulk of Harrenhal's bloody history can be chalked up to magic is leaving the impression that the castle exploits its inhabitants' "inner torment" (and that's the curse), but that's really unlikely when all or most of the inhabitants historically were killed bc of political intrigue or abusing their power over those in their lands. (I talk about it here) Like the other houses, the Strongs die and very violently bc of political intrigue and alliances. Plus, I don't think the Towers were ever "inauthentic".

I mention the book bec, again, the Strongs even in the show do still experience and will likely still experience total annihilation or violence without ghosts being the architects of such.

As for Larys, I personally speculate that he's with the greens for advantage until he's not and, yes, he didn't care all that much for family loyalty or obligation. Book and show.

Throughout the Dance, his actions appear incomprehensible; he acts against the Blacks, the Greens, and even against his own self-interest. It becomes clear that Larys serves no master but himself. What makes Larys particularly fascinating is what it seems the absence of ambition in his scheming. Unlike Littlefinger, who sees chaos as a ladder to power, to Larys, chaos is chaos, and that's good enough in itself.

I think that's is in the shadows so neither side can anticipate what's he's going to do next and thus be wary of him, which in turn makes it easier for him to perform secret tactics in contingecy of when either side fails/falls. So this:

There's, to me, a sort of fatigue here. He, canonically asks to leave behind his clubfoot when he's slotted to be executed, showing that he very likely pursued power in spite of what expectations for a disabled second son there was. But after it caught up with him, he took death as a new way out or a real chance to "rest" after all the scheming but as you say, on his own terms. A sort of parallel to how people just wanted the Dance to be over at the end.

Criston desperately wanted payback and was contrastingly attached to his status as an enemy against Rhaenyra or having some sort of BIG ENEMY bc he's defined himself his whole life by those things that are inaccessible to Larys: conventional knighthood masculinity and the physicality required to obtain such status. Alicent also desperately wished to validate herself through the conventions of womanhood that directly contradict the ruthlessness she wants to take advantage of:

For me, the Harrenhal sequence didn't appeal and wasn't all that fun both because of:

how Daemon incentives the Blackwoods with no success against the Brackens (like in canon) as if he's some sort of chaos-gremlin instead of the tactician he was

Daemon somehow being able to talk to and confront Alys in the cool, "normal" tones (when we see there's no vision of mind-fuckery happening) about everything else, but not figuring out she is likely the one to have poisoned his cup once he starts accusing people of doing so

this post AND this post explaining my thoughts about their famous argument on the show (bk!Daemon & Rhaenyra over B&C; how they went about getting Daemon there to Harrenhal (again, the argument b/t him and Rhaenyra; he also should have already been at Harrenhal before Luke's murder)

Therefore, I dislike how the entire Harrenhal plot in HotD is predicated on the supposed necessity of guiding Daemon to fight for/and believe in Rhaenyra AND her believing he would fight or plan well for her after their several years of growing a family together…

Even with the argument that bk!Rhaenyra might have felt something about B&C degrading her reputation or credibility in its viciousness. BECAUSE Daemon got many riverlords to follow him against the Brackens during and after the Battle of the Burning Mill not long after B&C -- those lords would have known what he did. As I said in one of the linked posts, these lords would not have cared that much over Jaehaerys as to stop supporting Rhaenyra altogether, esp after it was Aemond/a green who killed her son to provoke a response (not moral, but certainly falls within the parameters of how their general ethics work) OR as to forgo their sworn oaths to her.

There was no uproar about Daemon and the Blackwoods in canon…ever. Nor was any Tully a part of the war until much later. Bc the Blackwoods were destroying Rhaenyra's enemies, the Brackens…alone. (Yes there were villages ruined and sacked, I'm saying it wasn't treated as a war crime bc it was relegated against a green supporter and this was a conflict bk!Daemon had already enlisted various riverlords to fight against the Brackens, so there wouldn't be any sort of council called against him when he's performing exactly what he was supposed to do as Rhaenyra's consort and sorta-vassal):
