Straight Path

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ - صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ - غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Ihdinaṣ-ṣirāṭal-mustaqīm(a). Ṣirāṭal-lażīna an‘amta ‘alaihim, gairil-magḍūbi ‘alaihim wa laḍ-ḍāllīn(a)

Guide us along the Straight Path. The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.

Bimbinglah kami ke jalan yang lurus. (Yaitu) jalan orang-orang yang telah Engkau beri nikmat, bukan (jalan) mereka yang dimurkai dan bukan (pula jalan) orang-orang yang sesat.

Most people tend to attribute the "right choice" to morality, but this is a false equivalency, as what is right for you may be wrong for another. What is left for you may be right for another. What is straight for you may be backwards for another, and dragging someone along your path, that you chose, with you, to use a shield, is being a philosophical, moral, and religious little bitch. Punting someone you view as disposable to the end of your path because you know you chose wrong is being a coward and a fool. If you really believe you chose wrong, then why don't you change your mind and choose right?

Qur'an, Chapter 1 verse 1-7

Praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds, the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful, the King of the Day of Judgement. You alone we worship. You alone we ask for help. Guide us on the Straight Path, the Path of those You have blessed, not of those with anger on them, nor of the misguided.

If someone asks, "Why does the believer ask Allah for guidance during every prayer and at other times, while he is already properly guided Has he not already acquired guidance?''

The answer to these questions is that if it were not a fact that the believer needs to keep asking for guidance day and night, Allah would not have directed him to invoke Him to acquire the guidance. The servant needs Allah the Exalted every hour of his life to help him remain firm on the path of guidance and to make him even more firm and persistent on it. The servant does not have the power to benefit or harm himself, except by Allah's permission. Therefore, Allah directed the servant to invoke Him constantly, so that He provides him with His aid and with firmness and success. Indeed, the happy person is he whom Allah guides to ask of Him.

Al-Fatihah 1:6

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Guide us to the straight path.

English - Tafsir Ibn Kathir

Guide us to the straight path.

The guidance mentioned in the Surah implies being directed and guided to success.

Allah said,

اهدِنَــــا الصِّرَاطَ المُستَقِيم

(Guide us to the straight path),

meaning guide, direct, lead and grant us the correct guidance.

Also,

وَهَدَيْنَـهُ النَّجْدَينِ

And shown him the two ways (good and evil), (90:10),

means, `We explained to him the paths of good and evil.'

Also, Allah said,

اجْتَبَـهُ وَهَدَاهُ إِلَى صِرَطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

He (Allah) chose him (as an intimate friend) and guided him to a straight path, (16:121)

and,

فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَى صِرَطِ الْجَحِيمِ

And lead them on to the way of flaming Fire (Hell). (37:23)

Similarly, Allah said,

وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِى إِلَى صِرَطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ

And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (mankind) to the straight path. (42:52)

and,

الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِى هَدَانَا لِهَـذَا

All praise and thanks be to Allah, Who has guided us to this. (7:43)

meaning, guided us and directed us and qualified us for this end - Paradise.

The Meaning of As-Sirat Al-Mustaqim, the Straight Path

As for the meaning of As-Sirat Al-Mustaqim, Imam Abu Jafar At-Tabari said,

"The Ummah agreed that Sirat Al-Mustaqim, is the clear path without branches, according to the language of the Arabs. For instance, Jarir bin `Atiyah Al-Khatafi said in a poem,

`The Leader of the faithful is on a path that will remain straight even though the other paths are crooked."

At-Tabari also stated that, "There are many evidences to this fact."

At-Tabari then proceeded,

"The Arabs use the term, Sirat in reference to every deed and statement whether righteous or wicked. Hence the Arabs would describe the honest person as being straight and the wicked person as being crooked.

The straight path mentioned in the Qur'an refers to Islam."

Imam Ahmad recorded in his Musnad that An-Nawwas bin Sam`an said that the Prophet said,

ضَرَبَ اللهُ مَثَلً

صِرَاطًا مُسْتَقِيمًا وَعَلَى جَنْبَتَيِ الصِّرَاطِ سُورَانِ فِيهِمَا أَبْوَابٌ مُفَتَّحَةٌ وَعَلَى الاَْبْوَابِ سُتُورٌ مُرْخَاةٌ وَعَلَى بَابِ الصِّرَاطِ دَاعٍ يَقُولُ

يَاأَيُّهَا النَّاسُ ادْخُلُوا الصِّرَاطَ جَمِيعًا وَلَاا تَعْوَجُّوا

وَدَاعٍ يَدْعُو مِنْ فَوْقِ الصِّرَاطِ فَإِذَا أَرَادَ الاِْنْسَانُ أَنْ يَفْتَحَ شَيْيًا مِنْ تِلْكَ الاَْبْوَابِ

قَالَ وَيْحَكَ لَاا تَفْتَحْهُ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ فَتَحْتَهُ تَلِجْهُ

فَالصِّرَاطُ الاْاِسْلَامُ

وَالسُّورَانِ حُدُودُ اللهِ وَالاْاَبْوَابُ الْمُفَتَّحَةُ مَحَارِمُ اللهِ

وَذَلِكَ الدَّاعِي عَلَى رَأْسِ الصِّرَاطِ كِتَابُ اللهِ وَالدَّاعِي مِنْ فَوْقِ الصِّرَاطِ وَاعِظُ اللهِ فِي قَلْبِ كُلِّ مُسْلِمٍ

Allah has set an example:

a Sirat (straight path) that is surrounded by two walls on both sides, with several open doors within the walls covered with curtains. There is a caller on the gate of the Sirat who heralds,

'O people! Stay on the path and do not deviate from it.'

Meanwhile, a caller from above the path is also warning any person who wants to open any of these doors,

'Woe unto you! Do not open it, for if you open it you will pass through.'

- The straight path is Islam,

- the two walls are Allah's set limits,

- while the doors resemble what Allah has prohibited.

- The caller on the gate of the Sirat is the Book of Allah,

- while the caller above the Sirat is Allah's admonishment in the heart of every Muslim.

The Faithful ask for and abide by Guidance

If someone asks,

"Why does the believer ask Allah for guidance during every prayer and at other times, while he is already properly guided Has he not already acquired guidance?"

The answer to these questions is that if it were not a fact that the believer needs to keep asking for guidance day and night, Allah would not have directed him to invoke Him to acquire the guidance. The servant needs Allah the Exalted every hour of his life to help him remain firm on the path of guidance and to make him even more firm and persistent on it. The servant does not have the power to benefit or harm himself, except by Allah's permission. Therefore, Allah directed the servant to invoke Him constantly, so that He provides him with His aid and with firmness and success.

Indeed, the happy person is he whom Allah guides to ask of Him. This is especially the case if a person urgently needs Allah's help day or night.

Allah said,

يَـأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ ءَامِنُواْ بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِ وَالْكِتَـبِ الَّذِى نَزَّلَ عَلَى رَسُولِهِ وَالْكِتَـبِ الَّذِى أَنَزلَ مِن قَبْلُ

O you who believe!

Believe in Allah, and His Messenger (Muhammad), and the Book (the Qur'an) which He has sent down to His Messenger, and the Scripture which He sent down to those before (him). (4:16)

Therefore, in this Ayah Allah commanded the believers to believe, and this command is not redundant since what is sought here is firmness and continuity of performing the deeds that help one remain on the path of faith.

Also, Allah commanded His believing servants to proclaim,

رَبَّنَا لَا تُزِغْ قُلُوبَنَا بَعْدَ إِذْ هَدَيْتَنَا وَهَبْ لَنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الْوَهَّابُ

Our Lord!

Let not our hearts deviate (from the truth) after You have guided us, and grant us mercy from You. Truly, You are the Bestower. (3:8)

Hence,

اهدِنَــــا الصِّرَاطَ المُستَقِيم

(Guide us to the straight way) means,

"Make us firm on the path of guidance and do not allow us to deviate from it."

Allah then guides,

صِرَاطَ الَّذِينَ أَنعَمتَ عَلَيهِمْ غَيرِ المَغضُوبِ عَلَيهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ

Guidance is of two kinds:

a) Guidance of Taufiq and it is totally from Allah, i.e. Allah opens one's heart to receive the truth (from disbelief to belief in Islamic Monotheism).

b) Guidance of Irshad through preaching by Allah's Messengers and pious preachers who preach the truth, i.e. Islamic Monotheism.

I have very strong opinions about disaster preparation as someone who lives in a tornado zone, where evacuation is NOT an option for anyone and the only way to definitely survive is to 1) be in a building that WON'T just get picked up AND 2) have a basement, cellar, or specialized tornado shelter.

The simple fact is that the majority of fatalities in tornadoes are people living in mobile homes/trailers and those deaths could be reduced massively if the government built tornado shelters in high risk areas. But there's been very, very little effort to do that and tornadoes are just getting stronger and more deadly while poor people are left to huddle in our bathtubs, listening to the sirens and thinking about easily we could die.

"eddie isn't queer/gay," you say. "he is straight in canon, so him being gay is just a head canon. it's ok for others to think of him as straight because that's what he is."

let's ignore for a second the fact that eddie has never ever ever ever not even once, said in canon that he is a heterosexual very straight guy. seriously!!! he has never once said it!!! if i am "assuming" he's gay then you are also "assuming" he is straight even though he has never once said it!!

how do you think we got bi buck as canon? like i am serious right now, answer the question. how do you think we go bi buck canon? evan buckley was never conceived to be a bisexual man at the beginning of 911. the reason we have evan buckley as a canonically bisexual character today is because us, queer fans of 911, interpreted him and headcanoned him as bisexual. i would go even further and say that it was us, BUDDIE FANS, who interpreted him and headcanoned him as bi. even before the writers were explicitly writing him as bisexual. we read his actions and his story and his identity and said: "this is a bi character!" and the writers looked back and realized that it made sense! and so they started writing him explicitly and canonically as bi.

was it wrong of us to headcanon a character as bisexual then? like for all intents and purposes we were reading a "straight" character as bi. were we doing something wrong? how come you are not complaining/chastising us/shaming us for how we took evan buckley, an otherwise straight character, and saw him as bi? is it because it now serves a purpose to you that he is bi?

also, taking characters that aren't confirmed queer and reading them as queer is what the queer community, and specifically the queer fandom community, has been doing for DECADES. look up the history of queer coding, i am begging you. it has been through the means of queer coding and the perseverance of people that are engaged in it that actual queer representation in media has increased. and let me tell you right now, eddie diaz is, undoubtedly and undeniably, one of the most queer coded characters there is. whether you think this queer coding is conscious by the writers or not. eddie diaz is queer coded.

and i want everyone who says things like "eddie diaz is not a queer character. he is straight in canon. it's wrong to assume a character is queer without the character saying so" to know that this is exactly what straight and homophobic people say. you are using the SAME rhetoric that has been used to shame queer fans for decades for seeing themselves and their experiences in fictional characters of all types. in fact, us, queer fans (and again BUDDIE FANS), were told so many times by straight fans that we were wrong for reading buck as bisexual. and where are we now? where did reading buck as bi take us? oh yeah, to having bi buck in canon.

so please just stop with the "eddie isn't queer in canon" comments. if you don't want to interpret eddie as queer then that is your prerogative. i will be judging why that is, for sure, but it is your right. but be honest about it. it has nothing to do with whether or not he is straight (which hasn't been said) or queer coded (which he so obviously is seeing as so many of us can very easily read him as queer). it's a personal preference and you're not engaging with canon better because of it.

Believers should be aware of the dangers of Satan and his attempts to lead them astray from Allah. Satan tries to deceive people by making the life of this world alluring and making them forget the existence of the hereafter. He also stirs up hatred amongst believers and encourages greed. Despite Satan's tactics, Allah has given believers the power to resist him and remain devoted to Him, and promises them abundance and forgiveness.

Believers should seek refuge in Allah if they feel an evil urge from Satan, as He will protect them from the punishment of the Searing Blaze.
