It's taken me some time to determine what needs direct expressing regarding my choices in translating the Faust Zueignung. And then today, feeling pensive, I started to recount the way in which I first approached Faustian literature & Goethe's Faust 1 itself, as well as which concepts regarding artistic inspiration and the genesis of the poetic I had been fretting over at the time I first began to translate it.

That I had been considering the Zueignung, Vorspiel auf dem Theater and Prolog im Himmel as the dramatist's artificial frame to the work (and as such a simultaneous apology for and a commentary on the work) is highlighted by my subsequent focus on the joint themes of Goethe's dramatic Schaffensprozess and Faust's appearence, creation and completion in the context of Goethe's life and works, as evidenced in the Zueignung. With this in mind, I can see more clearly which words and phrases demonstrate these considerations, and finally complete my translator's notes! (:
