Sterling Ruby
Interview and new works
"To make work that is artwork. It is not a concept, it is still artwork"
Revealing the spirit of the times through collage
"I want to demonstrate my purpose as an artist by using various media and sublimating them into my work. In doing so, I can show the nature of our times, which seem to be mentally divided. The reason I continue to present my work using a wide range of media is because I consider my creative approach to be like a collage. Collage is a way of extracting elements from completely unrelated fields, clashing them, and creating new and unexpected fusions. I always employ this method in my work."
The bronze and ceramic sculptures are grotesque yet somehow captivating. The spray-painted canvases are finished in smudged colors, making you feel like you've entered a nightmare.
Buses. Of course, these are only a small part of Sterling Ruby's diverse means of expression. However, even looking at these alone, it is clear that he is attempting to expose some kind of truth. That is why the concept of collage is his greatest weapon.
"I believe that art should always shed light on the problems of the times. On that basis, what I value is not just creating works, but creating works that have artistic value. In other words, it's about creating genuine works, rather than just putting the concept first. Such works may communicate "something" that people have never felt before. This may give rise to some kind of reaction. I believe that this is the most important role of art."
Sterling Ruby was born in Bitburg, Germany in 1972. He presents his work in a variety of media including spray paint, sculpture and video. In 2008, he designed the interior of Raf Simons' first flagship store, which opened in Aoyama. He is currently exhibiting his work at the Setouchi Triennale 2010 (until October 31st), and is also holding a solo exhibition, "New Works," at Taka Ishii Gallery (until October 16th).
Sterling Ruby solo exhibition
Los Angeles-based artist Sterling Rubin is best known for his interior design for the Raf Simons Aoyama store. His latest exhibition, New Works, will be held at Taka Ishii Gallery. The exhibition will feature a number of original and distinctive works, including bronze works, colorful collages, and sculptures with a vampire motif.
