Is there a specific type of aida you use for cross stitching on clothes? I’ve been looking into putting designs on my own clothes via cross stitch like you do, and it’d be great to know if there’s a special kind I should get, or if there’s a specific technique you use to pull out the aida?

The canvas\aida I use is the most common one there can be - 100% cotton in size 54\14ct. I mostly use it because it's cheap to buy in bulk, so I don't feel wasteful when I pull it out later xD it literally looks like this:

In terms of pulling it out - it breaks easier than most threads do, so I would suggest trying out a small pattern first to see how you can handle the pulling yourself - the bigger the pattern the more difficult it's going to be and the threads will start breaking in the middle. I usually start with the thinner portion of the pattern (for the tree I will start with the trunk and pull horizontal threads first, then move to the vertical portions of the leaves and so on). Using pliers helps a lot. For the long threads I also start pulling it with a needle bit by bit before pulling from the most of the pattern.

Of course, there are soluble canvas available as well and from what I've heard they're much easier to use. Personally, my goblin brain rejects them because they're expensive - I can get a big sheet of basic cotton canvas for the price of a small piece of the soluble one, so I choose the more affordable option. This may be a regional thing, however, and I wouldn't be surprised if soluble canvas were cheaper (comparably at least) where you live, so it's definitely worth checking out 😁

Separate thing I'd point out is the material of the clothes you want to embroider on - if it's stretchy, it's going to be more difficult to keep the canvas in place. Jeans is quite sturdy, but I still prefer to lightly sew the canvas on before I start embroidering (even if the hoop will keep it in place afterwards). Especially with larger patterns, you will want to pay attention not to stretch the material too much, so that once the canvas is removed, the embroidery fits nicely on 😉
