They appreciate their workers, pay good wages and benefits. Bad manufacturers take their employees’ gifts for granted, and you can hear it in the piano. The unhappiness breaks it, makes it age out before its time. Often it’s everyday things that wear a piano down. The price of rent near the factory can make the difference between a superior piano and a shoddy one. Or even bad weather. A piano built in spring is better than a piano built in winter. SHE'S HERE SHE'S HERE MY ENORMOUS BABY IS HERE!!!!

This is a Steinway and Sons Style 1 Rococo grand piano built in 1864!!! The case is rosewood and the keys are actual ivory (pre-ban, obvs) and ebony. (Note: as an historical piece, she has special dispensation to be repaired with ethically sourced ivory. How cool is that?)

There are remarkably few of these still in existence, and fewer still that are in playable condition. She would be at home in a museum or concert hall, but instead she's in my living room!! She needs to be tuned, since 600+ miles in a truck would rattle anyone, but she sounds amazing even still.

I inherited her from my parents, who have recently had to downsize. As the only pianist in the family, I was designated as her new caretaker.
