They also have thousands of micro-genres including "casual viewing" which is used for movies/TV that go down best when you're not paying attention.

I keep thinking about how in Starfleet they do space burials where they make a torpedo case into a coffin and launch it into space and I’m just like… do they ever land anywhere?

Like maybe they do it near a star and shoot it into the star and it just vaporizes. Spock’s coffin landed on the Genesis planet because they wanted it to since he’d died so the planet could live etc.

But what if they didn’t do that and just let the coffin drift through space? What if it landed on an inhabited pre-warp or even pre-industrial planet? What if the corpse was intact enough that they could figure out it wasn’t their species? If they took apart the torpedo case and used the material or technology, would that count as cultural contamination and therefore a violation of the Prime Directive?

Implications, man.

Animation is better for fantasy and sci-fi.

One benefit lower decks had that was really a boon to the trek universe as a whole is that animation paved the way to add more, and continue to showcase, aliens that went beyond just humans in makeup. The original animated series had a few as well but it's place in canon was always a little loose. Lower decks was able to confirm those species as canon as well as add some new ones of their own, without being limited to the budget of adding makeup and prosthetics to an actor

Sharing this take here too. I, Excretus, wej Duj and First First Contact are a really special trio of episodes and almost single handedly carry season 2's placement as the best season of the show for me. But it was basically consistently good after this.

I had so much fun recreating some of the Lower Decks character rigs! I tried to get them as show accurate as possible, same with the backgrounds, and it was cool to animate with them after I made them!

Another way in which I think that Lower Decks will truly be the next Next Generation is that I think that it leaves behind the most worldbuilding prompts that other, future Star Treks will end up building upon. I think that, with Tawny Newsome's involvement in Starfleet Academy, this is a virtual certainty.
