Chloe Carmichael is the most interesting character in Fairly Oddparents because the way Timmy misunderstands Chloe as perfect leading to him hating her played out in real life with the fans too. It's kind of tragically funny the way the thing making her miserable and alone transcended fiction.
Timmy and the audience are presented with someone who is the opposite of him and seems happy, and then learns that despite being his polar opposite, she's actually just as unhappy as he is. It's a nice story of not judging a book by its cover and being receptive to alternate experiences. Timmy becomes empathetic to Chloe after learning this, but the audience says no. Fuck you and Fuck off.
Interesting, I think, but also a bit tragic.

This take in 2024/2025 comes with the caveat that many more people have become receptive to her now which is good.

As much as I want SNW to let Spock kiss men, I do think it’s iconic that La’an’s kissed both halves of spirk

This whole thing about scanning your face to prove tour age is making me remember, in 2018 while out in paris we got our wallet stolen during a particularly busy night at a lesbian bar. It was very late and with no money to buy metro tickets we were effectively stranded, but some people helped us and we ended up staying the night at a really sweet older man's place. His face was deeply scarred and he was missing an eye. We chatted on our way and he told me about his life, probably to help calm me down. He explained he had been stuck in a house fire 20 years ago and had had multiple rounds of facial reconstruction and a skin graft, but there's only so much surgery can do so he just learned to live with it. I remember he said he liked the queer bars because they're the only place people don't really stare at him.
At some point I took out my phone, and at the time I was using face unlock. This prompted him to tell me all the ways this technology doesn't work on him. How his phone selfie camera doesn't focus right because it's not a detecting a face. How he had to update his ID the old fashioned way, because the website kept rejecting his photos. And how it was becoming more and more common, and how it was making his life way harder.
This was 7 years ago, and now whenever I see this sort of technology I think of how that guy can't use it. And how house fires are pretty common, and how anything from being born this way to a skin condition to heavy tattooing can probably cause the same issue. Can these people get age verified ? Will they just lose access to all social media, which are increasingly necessary in society, if this becomes the norm ? These are people who are already driven out of public spaces due to how they look, and they're getting pushed out online too all in the interest of companies wanting more money.

There is a lot of great fan lore in the ensuing replies but I just wanna zoom in on this and say it's a real shame that Prodigy had two in the main/supporting cast and after 40 episodes we still didn't get much. I partially wanna blame Paramount though, if there was any time to do that it was clearly going to be S3 and beyond but the show got cut short.
At the same time the show did drop the ball on it, we got so much backstory to the new race, the Vau N'Akat, and not only did we get very little new info on Tellarites, they brought Brikars into Alpha canon and don't even give us a glimpse at literally anything about them in 40 episodes.
It bugs me that there's basically no lore for the Tellarites other than "pig guys who like to argue". They've been around since the 60s and there's no lore. They were a founding member of the Federation and there's no lore. There's a Tellarite main character on "Prodigy" and so far the only new lore we've gotten out if it is (1) at some point in the pre-Federation past, they rounded up their orphans and sent them out into deep space on colony ships, and (2) they're born in litters and the runts get called "Pog"

Seth McFarlane should make Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid play characters in The Orville season 4.

I've enjoyed SNW for the most part and yet everything I want to say about it is ultimately a complaint. Very odd show.
I feel like it's good in the way where there's not much to say other than it's good, but every individual issue is something I could talk about at length.
#star trek#star trek strange new worlds#snw#star trek snw#4 episodes in and idk if I can say I've loved any of these without having to add a caveat#trek musing
