Renegades: Ominara, a spin-off from Renegades: Requiem which is a serial-numbers-filed-off sequel to the fan film Star Trek: Renegades. This is Nichelle Nichols' final role.

It's not very good. And it's a pilot/proof of concept which sets things up and then abruptly stops without resolving a single thing.

Still, I was mad curious about it for years and glad I finally got to see so I'm happy😊

accompanying my last post, which was long enough, here are my top predictions for voyager cameos in legacy (apart from tuvok) that no one asked for:

1. janeway: just because she was mentioned in picard so often and has already worked for star trek again in prodigy

2. the doctor: or maybe lewis zimmermann, but I have a feeling robert picardo itches to go back on star trek, he makes references on social media all the time and did som unauthorized star trek stuff - which reminds me I wanted to check out renegades, is it any good?

3. harry: bc garrett wang and robert duncan mcneill are doing their podcast now and seem to want to get back into star trek again as well - but tom is kind of tied to b'elanna and I don't see roxanne dawson coming back in for now

ok now I've got this off my chest, I can be at peace until this show starts filming. if it really ever happens... in the meantime let me make one of the newer seven promo pics my profile pic, bc I found one that doesn't mess up my color scheme that badly. see this as part of my lobbying for this show (that I am still unsure about?).

a show doesn't necessarily have to be ABOUT queerness to BE a queer show. it's a cultural dialect that cishets don't quite speak.

edit: i gotta clarify that the shows do indeed still have to have actual queer characters in them to count

Fanbinding: Like a Wildfire Burning by @werewolves-are-real

It's illogical to deprive the body of necessary nutrition, but old habits can be hard to break.

Before I left for the holidays back in Dec, I made a whole bunch of books, and four of them were for and in-person meet-up for a class with other Renegaders!

I bound "Like a Wildfire Burning" (on Ao3) for @pleasantboatpress since they love Star Trek & Spock. It's a Spock-centric fic, focused on his struggle with an eating disorder and being caught between two cultures.

For design, I researched to translate "Wildfire burning" into Vulcan and then how to write it in Vulcan calligraphy (back). The fabric is Colibri copper, and the endpapers are a chiyogami I picked up down in Kyoto. I found a great smoke vector that I was able to play with for the title and first pages. I went for a gold splatter on the edges.

Honestly though the best part of making this book has been being able to meet and hang out with manda in person!!

For Gladness of You by kariye

tis I, emerging from the depths to release a book into the wild -- ok, no i am lying i sent this book out in April (which was late, terrible of me)

In March 2024, I participated in the @renegadeguild California Mini-Exchange (CAME). as some people might know - i am one of the original interlopers in the server granted i don't actually live in california, but i was promoted to Asia Ambassador status when i visited last year in July.

For the exchange, I very gloriously got @mourningmountainsbindery as my partner for the exchange who i was excited to bind for, but I struggled a little in making this book as my house has been in a state of perpetual crisis until I officially move in November end of this year. This is sadly put my bookbinding on a backburner and I have been rather slow at it (my pace so far has been something like 3 books over 6 months, which is terrible).

Ultimately, I selected the fic because it's one of my favourites in the AOS fandom, and I love its use of non-linear storytelling.

Some stats as usual:

body text: liberation serif 11 point

i had previously typeset this fic in word last year and I had really wanted to update the cover design. i've been leaning more into using paper and fabrics to tell a story, and i liked being able to use the different coloured papers to represent the coloured stones featured in the fic. I also painted the edges with liquid graphite, waxed and burnished them to make them shiny. i did a (largely failed) experiment to speckle the edges but mostly gave up as it was too messy to really do indoors. Some papers are from mamor papierie, and another is obtained from a marbler in India from etsy.

Endbands are made of silk, though i'd probably lean into thinner silk for smaller books in the future.

This book also features the second cut-out i've ever made, which i abused my cricut into doing it for me. Guess who found out that it's almost impossible to centralize the cut if you've precut the board already to size.

(Me, that's who.)

Despite the whinging, I do like how cut-outs work and will probably use them more in the future.

I’ve finally started rewatching Star Trek DS9 with the vague intentions of maybe actually watching and finishing the last season this time.

I’m about halfway through the first season, and I had honestly forgotten just how prominent of a character Quark is from the get-go. He gets a heck of a lot of screen time!

Quite the journey for the Ferengi from their intro in TNG, hah.

Speaking of, I’m making a parallel attempt to properly watch TNG for the first time. The contrast is stark!

The first time I watched DS9, I had very little else from the franchise with which to compare. And I think I might have been coming fresh from Farscape, of all things, which — well. Was Farscape.

So to me, the DS9 characters were just the characters.

But now that I’ve watched TOS and more of TNG, it certainly stands out more that half the cast of DS9 turns to blackmail, bribery, and yelling as very early steps in their problem solving, to say nothing of their other personal flaws.

What I’m saying is that I can see why it may have been jarring for long-term Star Trek fans. 😂
