John Whitehouse at MMFA:
On July 9, Oklahoma’s superintendent of public instruction Ryan Walters announced that a number of people — many of them key figures in right-wing media — would be rewriting the social studies curriculum in the state.
The list includes right-wing hosts with ties to Walters like Steve Deace, Dennis Prager, and Stacy Washington. Also included is Kevin Roberts, the head of The Heritage Foundation, which has organized Project 2025.
Walters announced an “executive review committee” to revise Oklahoma’s social studies curriculum. Members include Dennis Prager, Robert Pondiscio, David Barton, Kevin Roberts, Everett Piper, John Dwyer, David Goodwin, Mark Bauerlein, Steve Deace, and Stacy Washington. [Oklahoma State Department of Education, 7/9/24]
After implementing a mandate that the state’s public schools teach the Bible, Walters claimed that right-wing commentator and pastor Jackson Lahmeyer, who has promised to “embrace Christian nationalism” and previously ran for U.S. Senate in Oklahoma, encouraged him to implement such a policy last year. [Media Matters, 7/8/24]
Walters has approved PragerU Kids — which is widely criticized for pushing right-wing propaganda, such as including distorted histories about slavery in its history lessons — as curriculum for Oklahoma public schools. In one supposedly educational video, for instance, a cartoon version of Fredrick Douglass describes slavery as a “compromise to achieve something great.” [MSNBC, 9/7/23; Media Matters, 9/8/23; NBC, 8/10/23]
Dennis Prager is an anti-LGBTQ pundit who has hosted The Dennis Prager Show since 1999. In 2009, he founded the conservative nonprofit organization PragerU, which publishes short videos on political and international issues.
David Barton is a pseudo-historianand Christian nationalist well-known for spreading the idea that the country was supposed to be a Christian nation. Barton is the founder of WallBuilders.
Kevin Roberts is the president of the Heritage Foundation, the right-wing think tank leading Project 2025.
Steve Deace is a host for BlazeTV who has made many anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ remarks.
Stacy Washington is a commentator, radio host, and Air Force veteran who has appeared in many right-wing outlets. She was formerly a host of a program aired on American Family Radio, the radio arm of extreme anti-LGBTQ group American Family Association, before the network culled much of its programming and its dedicated Urban Family Communications network.
Right-wing indoctrination artist Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Schools Ryan Walters announced that he is having a team rewrite the state’s social studies curriculum, with many of its names right-wing media figures such as Everett Piper, serial history revisionist David Barton, indoctrination mill head Dennis Prager, and pundit Steve Deace.

“The woman dies.
She dies to provide a plot twist. She dies to develop the narrative. She dies for cathartic effect. She dies because no one could think of what else to do with her. Dies because there weren’t any better story ideas around. Dies because her death was the very best idea that anyone could come up with.
‘I’ve got it! Let’s kill her off!’
‘Yes! Her death will solve everything!’
‘Okay! Let’s hit the pub!’
And so, the woman dies. The woman dies so the man can be sad about it. The woman dies so the man can suffer. She dies to give him a destiny. Dies so he can fall to the dark side. Dies so he can lament her death. As he stands there, brimming with grief, brimming with life, the woman lies there in silence. The woman dies for him. We watch it happen. We read about it happening. We come to know it well.”
- The Woman Dies by Aoko Matsuda (translated by Polly Barton)

Re-Examining Spider-Man 11: Class Relations
"Will Success Spoil #SpiderMan?" Re-Ex-SM is Back on Thanksgiving 2024! Looking at the #JohnRomitaSr era and how it connects to the superhero class struggle for love and better housing. Is Peter Parker a gold digger? The answer might surprise you!
THIS POST IS DEDICATED TO STEVEN ATTEWELL, IN HOMAGE TO HIS SERIES: A PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE For as much as Spider-Man is described being a working-class superhero, class is rarely analyzed in these stories. On account of the demands of the genre, the mainstream superhero action-adventure, Peter Parker rarely expresses ‘class consciousness’ in any direct sense. The nature of the…

Sculptures by Emily Sudd
Sculptures by Kyung Boon Oh
Work by Cheyann Washington
Photography by Kate Turning
Pictured above are some selections from Plateaus: Art That Resonates, a multisensory group exhibition at Art Share L.A. exploring the dualities of life that artists bring into their work.
From the gallery-
Art Share L.A. is pleased to present Plateaus: Art that Resonates a multidisciplinary and multisensory immersive art exhibition that explores dualities: art and craft, death and life, grief and love, and activity and stillness. These contrasts exist with an interdependent bond, reminding us that bonds are intrinsic and often intertwined partners. In multiple materials, processes, and scales, monument-like creations are revealed through thoughtful burnishing of passion. The exhibition curated by Stacie B. London features seven visual artists: Amanda Maciel Antunes, Kyong Boon Oh, Hadley Holiday, Soojung Park, Emily Sudd, Kate Turning, and Cheyann Washington, along with additional contributions of ikebana by members of Sogestu Los Angeles, music by Rocco DeLuca, perfume by Lesli Wood (La Curie Eau de Parfume), and seating by Hunter Knight. Through a shared refinement of intentional experimentation with their mediums – acrylic panels, clay, glass, ink, photography, scent, sound, stone, thread, tree stumps, and wire– these artistic achievements reveal work that is brave, meditative, resilient, and vulnerable.
Our five senses inform our experiences and knowledge and assist us in ordering the world. In Plateaus: Art that Resonates the traditional forms of visual art of painting, photography, and sculpture are broadened to include aural art — via music and sound — and olfactory art. These multisensory and immersive pieces enhance the experience of viewing visual art and introduce additional dualities: sight with smell, smell with hearing, and hearing with sight. The expanded human experiences in an art gallery switch the expected experiences and invite the possibility of a familiar experience in a new way, or a breakthrough!
Breakthroughs often occur after long periods of what often seems like stagnation, or a plateau. It’s instinctual to want growth to be a continual upward trend, but instead it’s usually a series of long, flat periods (plateaus) of work with few visible results. Seemingly out of nowhere the plateau makes space for a breakthrough of creativity or growth—an intermittent moment when everything comes together. Instead of focusing on the result, it’s good to get comfortable in the plateau.
The artists and artisans of Plateaus: Art that Resonates use a broad range of approaches and techniques towards creative creations that are examples of how to grapple dualities, navigate the plateaus of life, and share breakthroughs that transmute our awareness of mortality into loving engagements with life and it’s contradictions and opposing perspectives that inspire and infuse life with meaning, immediacy, awareness, and appreciation.
Below are two of the ikebana created by members of Sogetsu Los Angeles.
This exhibition closes this Saturday (11/16) with a closing reception from 6-9 pm.

Starting decades of arguments about the death of Gwen Stacy, the text says "George Washington Bridge" but the art clearly depicts the Brooklyn Bridge. In later reprints the text would be corrected.
Not long after that when Ross Andru took over on art he really drove the point home with his incredibly accurate location references for when they went back to the Brooklyn Bridge. Check out that perspective!
Coming full circle, in 2005's Marvel Knights series GG took Mary Jane to the George Washington Bridge.
Not to be confused with George Washington Bridge, the Rob Liefeld character.

I legitimately do not understand the people who think Achilles was a better father figure to Ratonhnhaké:ton than Haytham was. Haytham was a shit dad let's be real but Achilles was so much worse and I keep wondering if I played the same game as these people, genuinely.
Achilles giving Ratonhnhaké:ton his dead son's name wasn't some cutesy, 'aw look he sees him as his son' thing, it's really fucking weird especially since he gave him the name 'Connor' when he barely knew the boy. He stripped Ratonhnhaké:ton of his identity bc he couldn't be bothered to learn how to pronounce his name (yeah sure Haytham couldn't do it with Ziio either but at least he fucking tried and went on to call her by the name she told him to use, he didn't go 'yeah I'm not gonna bother with that, your name is Stacy now') and went on to treat the boy like a tool to enact revenge against Haytham.
Achilles never respected Ratonhnhaké:ton's agency. When he comes back to the homestead saying he thinks an alliance between the Assassins and the Templars could be possible if Charles is out of the way, Achilles gets angry, refuses to listen to him, and once again tells him to kill his own dad whom he's just started to somewhat get along with. Ratonhnhaké:ton is hopeful that he can work things out with his father and you can tell he wants to have that bond with him but every single step of the way, Achilles keeps pressuring him to kill Haytham (something Ratonhnhaké:ton goes on to sincerely regret, btw) and won't offer any justification other than "he's the bad guy". Even if Haytham is basically only a threat to other Templars at this point.
But Haytham is the one who expects too much from his son ? All Haytham does is talk about the way he sees things and yeah he's telling Ratonhnhaké:ton that he's naive and all that but he's not wrong when he tells him not to trust Washington either, and even Ratonhnhaké:ton admits that Haytham is making a point when he says the people he seeks only care about the freedom of white men. Haytham isn't pushing Ratonhnhaké:ton into killing Achilles, and aside from telling him not to trust Washington, he doesn't order him to kill the guy either. Or to kill Achilles. He doesn't even ask him to join the Templars or leave the Assassins, just to try and see things the way he does. He's leaving the choice up to him and still follows him even if he thinks he's wrong.
Again, Haytham isn't a good father by any means, but at least he has the decency to let Ratonhnhaké:ton be his own person even if he disagrees with what he's doing. Meanwhile Achilles is just using him to process his grief and get back at Haytham in the way he knows would hurt the most. He doesn't care about Ratonhnhaké:ton's motivation for doing the things he does (protect his people).
#everyone i know who genuinely cares about ratohnhaké:ton hates achilles ten times more than they hate haytham#haytham kenway#connor kenway#achilles davenport#ac3#ratonhnhaké:ton

Gwen Stacy was 100 gazillion percent not dead before Peter’s web reached her??? What killed her while she fell? THE AIR????
and here begins one of the more hotly debated topics in spider-man comics canon - what killed gwen stacy?
(i could make a video essay about this)
goblin says that the shock of the fall alone is enough to kill her
and honestly, i don't think that sounds fake. like i mean, i've never been thrown off a bridge before but like, the shock of that could probably kill me. i don't think that's fake at all. i'd have a fucking heart attack mid-air. yeah.
but there is the pointed. snap.
so, really, regardless of whether gwen was already dead or not, the snap is a reality. if she was alive or dead, it doesn't matter, so if the shock of the fall didn't kill her, the snap would've.
i kind of don't know why norman would say she was dead before the webbing reached her. it seems more in norman's diabolical brand to double down and tell peter that his webbing IS what killed gwen. but i think maybe this is another case of the writers and artists not being on the same page - same as how it's described as the george washington bridge
but the artists didn't get the memo. that bitch is not the george washington bridge.
that bitch is the brooklyn bridge!!
headcanon that i guess in 616 the brooklyn bridge is called the george washington bridge. sure. why not.
i figure the gwen "snap!" thing is another instance of the writers and artists just being on distinctly different pages. there's this very funny workflow in comics where they kind of give the artist a rough outline of the plot and the final dialogue isn't actually written until the comic is pencilled so there's always, always miscommunications between the writers and artists. where the artist draws the brooklyn bridge but the writer thinks it would be fun if actually it was the george washington bridge after the fact because get it. norman loves money. but in the synopsis it didn't actually matter what bridge it was so the artist just drew whatever the fuck bridge!!
so. i think it's the same with the snap. in the synopsis it probably says "gwen dies in the fall" - artist interprets it as whiplash, and draws it so. writer has the idea that actually, it's the shock that kills her. synopsis says "dies in the fall" and it doesn't actually matter how. point is she dies! however the fuck!
i'm honestly so obsessed with the running gag in spider-man comics where you know the writers and artists are on different pages. in two separate rooms doing two separate things. rereading the comics is so funny when you know that weird workflow and you see a scene where the art is saying one thing and the words are saying another. almost like a 4kids dub.
that's why you get such great moments such as the panel that has caused the most outrage in my activity feed. the brown/blue pants debate.
HIS PANTS ARE BLUE!!
#sci talks comics#gwen stacy#peter parker#spiderman#sorry about the infodump but i am so passionate about this.#the incongruence between visuals and writing in comics is so so so funny to me. i want to make these jokes but i know people wont get it#jokes that are only funny.. to me.#i want to make intentional artist errors faithful to the comics but people will just think they're mistakes . but i will be laughing#it is doubly funny to say “oh its a miscommunication between writer and artist” because i am the writer AND artist.#jokes that are funny.. only to Me...

Miranda's Messy Year
Consider this a "Miranda After Blake" post to serve as a companion to my "Gavin Before Gwen" deep dive. These messy exes!
Country singer Miranda Lambert has had her name mentioned in a lot of eyebrow-raising headlines over the years, but I think it's safe to say that her exploits from January 2018 to February 2019 were some of the messiest of her entire career.
It all starts when the country band Turnpike Troubadours signs on to open some shows for the start of Miranda's "Livin' Like Hippies" tour...
January 2018
According to People Magazine, Miranda and Evan Felker, lead singer of the Turnpike Troubadours, begin texting about his band's upcoming appearance as an opening act on her tour in January.
At the time, Miranda has been dating singer Anderson East for over two years, and Evan has been married to wife Staci since September 2016.
Lambert and Felker reportedly connected via text message in January ahead of the tour. “They had never met and she had started texting him about looking forward to playing together and getting to know each other and maybe they could write because she really liked his writing sort of thing,” says the source. “It started very much about work. He was completely thrilled. By the time he was leaving for tour, it had become a lot flirtier.” During their one-and-a-half-year marriage, Felker and his wife were like “best friends,” says the source, and he was open with her about his texts with Lambert before heading out on the road. “He knew it was flirty and crossed a line with Staci. He showed her the whole thing and felt bad about it. It wasn’t sexual or anything, but he was like, ‘I don’t want to blow her off because this is the kind of money that can change our grandkids’ lives if I’m able to write with this person,’” adds the source. (People)
February 2018
The Turnpike Troubadours open for Miranda February 1, 2, and 3 at concerts in Washington and Oregon.
When the tour ended, Felker allegedly skipped his flight home to Oklahoma — where Nelson and Felker lived as newlyweds — and continued traveling with Lambert, telling his wife via email, “I’m not coming home this week,” according to the source. (People)
A few days after Evan allegedly tells his wife he's not coming home, Miranda posts a photo on Instagram on February 7, 2018, with lipstick writing on a mirror - "I do this thing called whatever I want."
Fans notice that Miranda's boyfriend Anderson has unfollowed her on Instagram around February 9.
People Magazine will later report that Evan "blindsided his estranged wife Staci Nelson, 33, with his sudden divorce filing in mid-February — 15 days after he met Lambert in person for the first time." In a conflicting report, Radar Online obtains divorce papers which state that Staci filed on February 28.
Whatever the case, less than a month after Turnpike's first show with Miranda, Evan's marriage is kaput.
March 2018
On March 7, 2018, Miranda posts an Instagram photo from a writing session that shows graphing paper and two cans of beer, including the Modelo brand — seemingly breadcrumbing her secret time spent with Evan.
A source tells PEOPLE that Felker is known to write with that specific type of paper and his drink of choice is Modelo beer. (X)
On March 27, 2018, Miranda and Evan are spotted together in New Orleans, though the candid pictures and eyewitness account don't come out in the media until later.
At the time the photos are taken by a fan, their relationship, his divorce, and her split from Anderson are all still not public knowledge.
“Miranda and Evan sat down on the same side of the booth,” the witness told RadarOnline.com about their hot and heavy date at the Ruby Slipper Café in the Big Easy on March 27. “We thought it was just a regular couple being cute on the same side of the booth, then we realized it was Miranda!" (Radar)
April 2018
On April 7, 2018, Miranda's split from Anderson East is announced after weeks of speculation that they had broken up.
On April 15, 2018, Miranda attends the ACM Awards alone. When she accepts Song of the Year for "Tin Man," she says, “Thank you guys so much for sharing my broken heart with me."
Though her recent breakup with Anderson is in the news, no one is wise to her connection with Evan just yet. That will soon change.
On April 24, 2018, Miranda's relationship with Evan is confirmed. People reports they have been dating for "several months." Details very soon trickle out about the overlap with Evan's now-heartbroken wife.
According to Us Weekly, the musicians began “spending a lot more time together” while on tour earlier this year. After nearly one-and-a-half years of marriage, Felker’s wife Staci Nelson reportedly filed for divorce in mid-February. Multiple sources confirm to PEOPLE the couple’s relationship took off after Felker opened with his band for three dates on Lambert’s Livin’ Like Hippies tour in early February. (People)
Staci's father is then quoted by Radar Online about the split:
Nelson’s father exclusively told RadarOnline.com that his daughter is “heartbroken” over the betrayal. “I don’t know Miranda, but from what I understand he was opening for her,” he said. “From what I understand, Evan asked for the divorce. All I know is hearsay, so I’m not going to pass that on.” When informed of Lambert’s man-stealing reputation, he responded, “I don’t like to spread rumors, but I’d say you’re on the right track.” (X)
Amid the swirling drama about Miranda's new boyfriend, her ex-husband posts a cryptic tweet on April 25 that people immediately assume is calling Miranda out.
Below is his tweet and a comment that he retweeted:
“Been taking the high road for a long time.. I almost gave up. But I can finally see something on the horizon up there!! Wait!! Could it be?! Yep!! It’s karma!!”
On April 27, Staci posts a picture of herself seemingly crying with the caption: “PSA: If Staci Felker can make it through this week, so can you."
On April 30, 2018, a detailed story comes out in People Magazine about the entire situation, with a source blasting Evan for his behavior.
Miranda Lambert‘s new boyfriend Evan Felker blindsided his estranged wife Staci Nelson with his sudden divorce filing in mid-February after his relationship with the country singer turned romantic. “The notion that [Felker and Nelson’s] divorce happened for any reason other than that is complete bulls—,” a source close to the couple exclusively tells PEOPLE of Lambert and Felker’s relationship, news of which broke last Tuesday. “[People are] making it seem like, ‘Oh, they got close while they were on tour together,’ as if the tour was six months long, but it was three days, and the first two of those he was still acting like he was in love with his wife,” the insider says, adding that Felker “didn’t even call home the third night.” Felker then “full-on ghosted” Nelson as Lambert shared cryptic posts via Instagram, the source says. On Feb. 7, Lambert posted a photo of her smiling in front of a mirror featuring the words “I do this thing called whatever I want” written in red. The source tells PEOPLE that if it wasn’t for Felker’s relationship with Lambert, “he would be talking to” his estranged wife and wouldn’t have filed for divorce on Feb. 16, adding that “the notion that he was planning to divorce [Felker] before he met her is complete insanity.” But Felker eventually called his wife in late March and “laid it all on the table, like, ‘Surprise!'” the source tells PEOPLE, adding, “He’s always the kind of guy where if he screws up he comes clean.” “He got sucked into it. He’s not a victim; he’s a grown man and should have said no,” says the source of Felker and Lambert, whose split from ex Anderson East was revealed in April following weeks of breakup speculation.
May 2018
US Weekly reports that Evan is looking to speed up his divorce from Staci. A source close to Staci seems to indicate that they think Miranda is behind Evan's sudden rush:
Evan Felker is in a hurry to move things along with new squeeze Miranda Lambert. The Turnpike Troubadours frontman filed a scheduling order to end his relationship with estranged wife Staci on Tuesday, Us Weekly reported. He did so out of fear his ex would 'unduly delay' their impending divorce, the mag claimed. However a source claimed Staci was surprised by the move, as she is just as keen to end things as he is. 'Anyone who actually speaks to Staci knows she has wanted out of this marriage for months,' the insider said. 'Evan is the one who disappeared again and changed his phone number. 'They both planned to end this quietly. StacI has never wanted to go to court and Evan told StacI he did not want to either, so there is probably someone a little more powerful dictating all of this.' (X)
July 2018
In early July, Staci says on social media that she and Evan - who is still dating Miranda - had reconnected recently and had been talking on the phone, but that he had ghosted her once again and didn't return her calls after she had a medical scare.
Less than a week after Staci's comments about her latest drama with Evan, the first photo of Miranda and Evan holding hands is taken in New York on July 18.
August 2018
On August 2, Staci alleges that Evan had reached out to her again which resulted in an unknown number, who she believes to be Miranda, calling her obsessively.
FYI, if you're crazy and crazy famous, this is how your number comes up. Wife's number doesn't change. Seems problematic. 10 times in one night. #insecure #rightfullyso The Idaho number is my husband. The other … is the person who is tired of him calling home.
On August 17, it is confirmed that Staci and Evan's divorce has been finalized.
But just a week after that, an article about Miranda in The Tennessean reveals that she and Evan have split.
People Magazine reports that Miranda ended the relationship because Evan "broke her rules."
“I don’t think it was a dramatic split, but he knew what he was ‘allowed’ to do based on her rules and he broke them,” says the source. “He did something that he knew she wasn’t going to approve of, she assumed he did it and he didn’t deny it.”
November 2018
Three months after her breakup with Evan, Miranda meets New York City Police Officer Brendan McLoughlin who is working security when the Pistol Annies perform on Good Morning America, on November 2, 2018.
Three days later, on November 5, 2018, Brendan's son with Kaihla Rettinger is born.
Once his relationship with Miranda is made public, People Magazine reports that Brendan spent Thanksgiving a few weeks after his and Miranda’s first meeting with Rettinger and his newborn son.
It is unclear if he and Rettinger were still romantically involved at that time, but the source close to McLoughlin believes there was “overlap” between Rettinger and Lambert, as the source claims he “had a history of cheating.” A rep for Lambert had no comment.
January 2019
Miranda and Brendan secretly get married on January 26, 2019.
February 2019
On February 11, 2019, police are called to a restaurant in Nashville over a dispute between Miranda, an unnamed male friend, and other patrons of the venue.
Miranda Lambert had a heated exchange with a couple dining at a Nashville steakhouse, and things got so nasty she dumped a salad on a woman she says was provoking her … TMZ has learned. Sources close to Miranda say the food fight went down Sunday night at Stoney River Steakhouse, where the singer was dining with her mother and a family friend. We're told an older man started beefing with Miranda's buddy, and things started spiraling out of control. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … cops responded to a call about 2 men fighting, but by the time police arrived at the scene, Miranda and her party were gone. We're told cops didn't file a report. As for why Miranda felt compelled to dump her dinner on the woman … we're told the woman's husband picked a fight with Miranda's friend, which started in the men's restroom with a wisecrack about millennials and their phones. Eyewitnesses say Miranda had to be held back after the man came up to her table and started screaming … we're told Miranda started mouthing off and eventually walked over to the man's wife, got feisty with her and dumped a salad in her lap!!! (TMZ)
In 911 calls obtained by TMZ and The Tennessean, a female employee at Nashville’s Stoney River Steakhouse restaurant can be heard telling a Metro dispatcher: “I have two guests about to get into a fistfight… Miranda Lambert.” “She just ran out the door, and got into it with another couple right here… I’m sorry my manager just said call 911,” the employee explained. In a separate 911 call, a dispatcher can be heard asking what sparked the altercation. “Something happened in the restaurant between these two gentlemen, and another gentleman walked up to her table and started cussing him out,” the employee told the dispatcher. “This is the third time they’ve gotten into it, and now Miranda is trying to hit people, and she’s flipping plates on them.” In another call, a frantic employee pleaded with the 911 dispatcher for help. “There’s an altercation between two guests, and it’s about to get physical,” the employee explained. “Our managers are trying to hold them back but we can’t.” (The Tennessean)
Five days after the salad fiasco, on February 16, 2019, Miranda announces in an Instagram post that - surprise! - she is married to someone that nobody even knew she had been dating.
In honor of Valentine’s Day I wanted to share some news. I met the love of my life. And we got hitched! My heart is full. Thank you Brendan Mcloughlin for loving me for.... me. #theone
People Magazine will note that it appears Brendan was the person with Miranda during the restaurant incident on Feb. 11:
The male companion who sparked Miranda Lambert’s salad-dumping drama reportedly identified himself as a cop — meaning signs seem to point to the fact that it was her new husband Brendan McLoughlin. The country star was dining at the Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill with her mother and the man Feb. 10 when an older man made a comment about “millennials and their phones” to Lambert’s pal in the men’s restroom, according to TMZ. Video footage obtained by the outlet shows Lambert’s male companion engaging in a spat with a fellow diner, while a woman recording the fight observes, “The guy that she’s with is very young…”
Shortly after Miranda's surprise marriage news, reports about Brendan's newborn son and the sketchy context surrounding his romantic life start to emerge.
Wedding bells almost rang once before for Brendan McLoughlin, the New York City policeman whom Miranda Lambert secretly married last month. The NYPD officer, 27, had been engaged to another woman — fellow Staten Island native Jackie Bruno — until just months before marrying Lambert, PEOPLE confirms. He proposed to his now ex-fiancée with a 1.21-carat, round, brilliant cut diamond ring, set in an 18-carat white gold band, a source close to McLoughlin tells PEOPLE. The ring and matching wedding band were worth approximately $15,000, according to documents viewed by PEOPLE. McLoughlin and Bruno’s relationship ended when Kaihla Rettinger, the mother of McLoughlin’s son, messaged his former fiancée to let Bruno know Rettinger was seven months pregnant with the police officer’s child and had been living with him and his family, the source reveals. McLoughlin’s son was born on Nov. 5, three days after he met Lambert, 35. Rettinger had no comment when reached by PEOPLE.
The mother of Brendan's ex-fiancee also speaks to the press:
"She was engaged to Brendan and he cheated on her and got another girl pregnant," Jackie's mom Carol Bruno told Us Weekly. "It's all true." Carol added, "Jackie was in Sweden playing professional soccer, got injured and came home and the girl contacted her. She broke the news to her. [Brendan] tried to deny it and then begged her to stay with him. "She was only going for a few months to play, he was begging her to marry him before she left, even though he knew the girl was pregnant." (E Online)
When Staci Felker is asked in Instagram stories about her thoughts on Miranda's quickie wedding, her comment foreshadows an inevitable reconciliation with Evan:
"I did think the dress was really pretty and I wish she would call me and tell me how it was so easy for her to get over my ex because it hasn't been so easy for me."
As for Blake, People Magazine claims a source close to him says the following:
“He put Miranda in his rear view mirror long ago. Miranda brings nothing positive to his life,” says the source. “Their marriage ended and he moved on. Ever since, he is grateful every day.”
June 2020
Two and a half years after their split, Evan and Staci get remarried on June 24, 2020.
In the book Red Dirt, excerpted by Rolling Stone in August 2020, Evan Felker said that he had reprioritized his life after trying to get sober:
"First and foremost, I found sobriety and recovery," he said. "And I stepped away from the road and got a clearer view of the world. I got back to just being me."
They have gone on to have two children together, a daughter and son.
In the years following, Staci has lightly addressed the topic here and there. On this Instagram story from 2022, she says it feels like it all happened to someone else:
As for Miranda and Brendan, though both engaged in pretty messy behavior in 2018, since announcing their marriage they have kept a pretty clean profile.
The only semi-scandals they have added to their resumes seem to have come in the last two years - Miranda's selfie-gate backlash in July 2023, and TikTok gossip about Brendan dancing with patrons of Miranda's restaurant in June 2024.
They recently marked their sixth wedding anniversary.

Been thinking a lot lately about the recurring theme of suicide/suicidal ideation in Spider-Man comics - especially in Peter Parker's villains. Peter himself has thought about and even joked out loud about ending his own life, but he has always convinced himself to keep going even when his life is in shambles.
But his villains, who are often the ones causing terrible problems in Peter’s life, have gone to that brink or gone over it. Though there might be others, I am thinking about:
Sergei Kravinoff/Kraven the Hunter (who killed himself with a rifle after he proved he could defeat Spider-Man):
Harry Osborn/Green Goblin II(who tried to commit murder-suicide by drugging Peter and dragging him into a building where a timer bomb had been set up. He related to Peter and thought they would both be better off dead):
Dmitri Smerdyakov/The Chameleon (jumped backwards off the George Washington Bridge - the bridge Peter's dead girlfriend Gwen Stacy was thrown off - after telling Peter that he loved him and that he was glad he could make him smile, and that Peter looks nice when he smiles. He does seemingly survive this fall - though Peter thinks him dead at the time):
Norman Osborn/Green Goblin (is shown staring at a gun in his drawer after Peter rejects him/Norman finds he has no control over the young man he wants to see continue the Osborn Legacy):
Anyway there's this thread of these men who feel empty and/or vastly unhappy, and then they become obsessed with Peter. I am sure there could be more said about this - and if anyone wants to add anything that'd be cool - but I just find it interesting.

What are your opinions on Gwen Stacy?
Alright, Anon, strap in because we’re about to go DEEP into every version of Gwen Stacy across comics, movies, TV, games, and animation. I think that Gwen Stacy isn’t just a character—she’s a cornerstone of the Spider-Man mythos who has transcended her origins. Let’s explore her legacy in excruciating detail.
COMICS GWEN STACY: THE FOUNDATION OF A LEGACY
Earth-616 Gwen Stacy: The Original Love Interest
Gwen Stacy’s first appearance in The Amazing Spider-Man #31 (1965) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko establishes her as one of Peter Parker’s first major love interests. She’s a fellow student at Empire State University, introduced alongside Harry Osborn. Gwen is immediately striking: intelligent, confident, and beautiful. But her personality is far more layered than the archetype suggests.
In the early issues, Gwen is portrayed as a complex mix of warmth and insecurity. It is important for us to know and understand that Gwen did not initially build an attraction towards Peter here, not to mention that they only first met each other in college and not in highschool. While she and Peter obviously get much closer later, both in their own ways, at moment she did not really like him, as Peter’s constant worrying of Aunt May caused him to ignore his classmates almost entirely!
Yet, later, she obviously quickly develops feelings for Peter, but his double life as Spider-Man keeps pulling him away from their budding relationship. This causes tension, and Gwen’s emotional volatility mirrors Peter’s struggles. For example, in The Amazing Spider-Man #33, while Peter is fighting to save Aunt May’s life (the iconic “lifting the rubble” scene), Gwen is frustrated by his absence at school. This conflict becomes a recurring theme—Gwen represents Peter’s longing for a normal life, but his Spider-Man responsibilities constantly sabotage their happiness.
One of Gwen’s most defining moments comes in The Amazing Spider-Man #90 (1970), when her father, Captain George Stacy, dies during a fight between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. As Captain Stacy dies, he reveals that he knows Peter is Spider-Man and asks Peter to protect Gwen. This moment cements Peter’s sense of responsibility toward Gwen, but it also adds layers of guilt, as he indirectly blames himself for Captain Stacy’s death. Gwen, unaware of Spider-Man’s identity, is devastated and begins to distance herself emotionally.
“The Night Gwen Stacy Died”
Gwen’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man #121-122 (1973) is one of the most famous—and controversial—events in comic book history. The Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) kidnaps Gwen and throws her off the George Washington Bridge (though the comic mistakenly refers to it as the Brooklyn Bridge). Peter attempts to save her with his webbing, but the sudden stop causes her neck to snap, killing her instantly.
This event shattered readers in the 1970s. Gwen’s death marked a turning point in superhero storytelling, transitioning from the lighthearted Silver Age to the darker, more mature Bronze Age. It wasn’t just that Gwen died—it was how she died. Peter’s failure to save her, despite his best efforts, highlighted the harsh reality that even superheroes can’t save everyone. This moment haunts Peter for the rest of his life and becomes a foundational part of Spider-Man’s mythos.
Spider-Gwen/Spider-Woman (Earth-65): The Hero Reborn
Decades later, in Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014), Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez reimagined Gwen Stacy as Spider-Woman in an alternate universe. On Earth-65, it’s Gwen who is bitten by the radioactive spider instead of Peter Parker. This reinvention flips her traditional role on its head—she’s no longer a victim but a hero in her own right.
Spider-Gwen’s world is a vibrant punk-rock-infused universe. Gwen is the drummer for a band called The Mary Janes (with lead singer Mary Jane Watson). Her costume—sleek white with pink-and-black accents and a hood—is instantly iconic.
Her backstory carries shades of Peter’s original guilt: in this universe, her friend Peter Parker becomes the Lizard after experimenting on himself to gain powers. Gwen, as Spider-Woman, is forced to fight him, and he dies as a result. This tragedy defines her heroic journey, much like Uncle Ben’s death defines Peter’s. Spider-Gwen’s adventures explore themes of identity, guilt, and redemption, while also letting her team up with other Spider-heroes in events like Spider-Verse and Spider-Geddon.
In later series like Spider-Gwen: Ghost-Spider, Gwen’s multiverse-crossing adventures showcase her growth as a leader. She frequently interacts with Earth-616 Peter, Miles Morales, and other Spider-people, cementing her place as a fan-favorite in the Spider-Man family.
GWEN STACY IN LIVE-ACTION MOVIES
Bryce Dallas Howard in Spider-Man 3 (2007)
In Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, Gwen Stacy is played by Bryce Dallas Howard, but this version of the character is underwhelming. She’s introduced as a rival love interest to Mary Jane Watson, functioning as little more than a plot device to create tension between Peter and MJ. While Howard looks the part and has a few moments of charm, I think this Gwen lacks depth or connection to the tragedy that defines her in the comics. But still, I did enjoy her portrayal of Gwen Stacy.
Emma Stone in The Amazing Spider-Man Series (2012-2014)
Emma Stone’s portrayal of Gwen Stacy in Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel is widely regarded as one of the best live-action adaptations of a Spider-Man character. This Gwen is smart, ambitious, and deeply involved in Peter’s life, both as a romantic partner and a teammate which was seriously groundbreaking to watch in my opinion.
In the first film, Gwen works as an intern at Oscorp, where she demonstrates her scientific brilliance. She’s not just a damsel in distress—she actively helps Peter in his battle against the Lizard, providing the antidote to stop Dr. Curt Connors’ plan.
The chemistry between Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield is electric, making their relationship one of the highlights of the series. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Gwen’s ambitions take center stage—she plans to study in England, creating conflict with Peter, who fears for her safety.
Gwen’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is a direct homage to The Amazing Spider-Man #121. The scene is heart-wrenching, with Peter failing to save her in a moment that mirrors his comic-book tragedy. Emma Stone’s performance in this scene captures the raw emotion of Gwen’s loss, making it one of the most memorable moments in superhero cinema.
GWEN STACY IN ANIMATION
A Multiversal Version Of Gwen Stacy Only Appeared Once In Spider-Man: The Animated Series (1994-1998)
Gwen Stacy didn't initially appear in the hit '90s adaptation Spider-Man: The Animated Series, which focused on love interests like Mary Jane Watson and Felicia Hardy/Black Cat instead. However, an alternate reality version of Gwen Stacy later appeared in the season's two-part final, "Spider Wars." I think that this version (voiced by Mary Kay Bergman) was unique. She'd survived past her death in the comic timeline and gotten engaged to her Peter Parker, who'd created a powerful Spider-Armor before he was recruited to save the multiverse from Spider-Carnage.
The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008-2009)
In this critically acclaimed series, Gwen Stacy is voiced by Lacey Chabert. This version of Gwen is Peter’s best friend and academic rival, portrayed as shy and awkward but fiercely intelligent. The show builds her relationship with Peter slowly, making her feelings for him feel earned rather than rushed.
Gwen’s emotional depth is a highlight of the series, especially in her interactions with Peter and her struggles with her own insecurities. The show ended prematurely, but its portrayal of Gwen is widely regarded as one of the best adaptations.
Ghost-Spider Joined The Multiversal Web-Warriors In Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six (2012-2017)
DisneyXD aired the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, which took on the new title of Ultimate Spider-Man vs. The Sinister Six for the fourth and final season. The series introduced an alternate version of Gwen Stacy/Spider-Gwen (voiced by Dove Cameron).
This version of the character hailed from Miles Morales/Kid Arachnid's home reality. She used technology to replicate Miles Morales' powers and became her reality's protector after Miles stayed in Spider-Man's home reality.
Ghost Spider Joined An Animated Team Of Secret Warriors In The Marvel Rising (2018 - ) Movie Specials
A new series of animated specials that highlighted new waves of young heroes debuted in 2018 under the Marvel Rising banner, which featured Daisy Johnson/Quake as she organized a team that would become known as the Secret Warriors. (This team would eventually include Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider).
The character's storyline followed Spider-Gwen's comic origins, although it was blended into the main Marvel universe continuity for Marvel Rising, which also saw Dove Cameron reprise her role as Gwen from Ultimate Spider-Man.
Marvel's Spider-Man (2017 - ) Explored Gwen Stacy's Connection To Dr. Miles Warren/The Jackal
The most recent animated series debuted in 2017 as Marvel's Spider-Man, and included Gwen Stacy (voiced by Laura Bailey) as one of the brilliant students of the reimagined Horizon High, alongside other popular characters like Miles Morales and Anya Corazon/Spider-Girl, all of whom would soon team up with Spider-Man as costumed superheroes. The series merged Gwen with her alternate reality Spider-Gwen character and reimagined her relationship with The Jackal, who became her uncle instead of a twisted admirer. Marvel's Spider-Man is the only adaptation that attempted to explore their long comic history in any form.
Ghost-Spider Appeared Alongside Spider-Man In Marvel Super Hero Adventures (2017-2020)
Spider-Man and his allies star in Disney Junior's Marvel Super Hero Adventures, which began airing in 2017 with kid-friendly stories that teamed the wall-crawler with various heroes in the Marvel Universe, including an alternate reality Gwen Stacy/Ghost-Spider (voiced by Emily Tennant).
Ghost-Spider only appeared in costume in the series, which never explored her character much beyond her various adventures with Spider-Man as they took on classic villains from his rogues' gallery, like Doctor Octopus and The Rhino.
Ghost-Spider Appeared In Disney Jr.'s Marvel's Spidey and His Amazing Friends (2021- )
Disney Jr. launched a new team-up series in 2021 called Spidey and his Amazing Friends, which teamed popular Marvel characters up with Spider-Man. Gwen Stacy appeared as Ghost-Spider in the series, voiced by Lily Sanfelippo.
Ghost-Spider's costume was simplified and adapted with web wings under her arms to allow her to glide, while her unmasked appearance was similar to her Marvel Rising design, which borrowed the pink highlights from the unrelated character Gwenpool.
Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Hailee Steinfeld voices Spider-Gwen in Into the Spider-Verse, bringing Earth-65’s Gwen to life in stunning animation. This Gwen is confident, stylish, and a skilled hero. Her tragic backstory—losing her universe’s Peter Parker—adds emotional weight to her character.
In Across the Spider-Verse, Gwen’s relationship with her father takes center stage, and the film delves deeper into her struggles as a hero. The watercolor-inspired visuals of her universe reflect her emotional state, creating some of the most visually stunning moments in the film.
LEGACY AND CULTURAL IMPACT
I think that Gwen Stacy’s journey from her debut in 1965 to her modern incarnations as Spider-Gwen is a testament to her lasting relevance in the Spider-Man mythos and beyond. Her character’s impact is profound, not just in shaping the narrative of Spider-Man comics but in redefining how female characters are treated in superhero storytelling. Gwen Stacy has evolved from a symbol of tragedy to one of empowerment, resonating across generations and media. Here’s a detailed exploration of her legacy and cultural significance.
1. A Pivotal Turning Point in Superhero Storytelling
“The Night Gwen Stacy Died” as a Defining Moment
Gwen’s death in The Amazing Spider-Man #121-122 (1973) marked a seismic shift in the tone of superhero comics. Before this storyline, most comic book narratives were marked by optimism and clear-cut morality. Heroes won, villains lost, and the status quo was preserved. However, Gwen’s death broke these conventions, ushering in the darker and more complex stories of the Bronze Age of Comics.
This moment is often credited with demonstrating that superhero stories could be serious literature. Gwen’s death wasn’t a mere plot device—it was a statement about the fallibility of heroes, the unpredictability of life, and the consequences of being a superhero. Spider-Man’s failure to save Gwen highlighted the vulnerability of even the most powerful characters, humanizing Peter Parker in a way few heroes had been before.
Her death also introduced the concept of “fridging” into the superhero genre, a term coined by comic book writer Gail Simone. Fridging refers to the trope of female characters being killed off or harmed to advance a male character’s story. While Gwen’s death is undeniably iconic, it has also been a focal point for criticism, as it set a precedent for how women in comics were often treated as disposable. This discourse around her death remains relevant in modern discussions about representation in media.
2. Redefining Gwen Stacy: From Tragedy to Empowerment
The Birth of Spider-Gwen
The creation of Spider-Gwen in 2014 transformed Gwen Stacy from a symbol of loss into a symbol of empowerment. Her alternate-universe counterpart on Earth-65 flips the script by making her the hero, not the victim. Spider-Gwen’s debut in Edge of Spider-Verse #2 immediately struck a chord with readers, proving that Gwen’s story wasn’t confined to being Peter Parker’s doomed love interest.
Spider-Gwen’s success is a reflection of changing cultural attitudes toward female characters in comics. Her stories center her agency, independence, and growth as a hero, allowing her to step out of Peter’s shadow. The themes of guilt and redemption that underpin her narrative add emotional complexity, but they are no longer defined by her relationship to a male character. Instead, Spider-Gwen grapples with her own choices and the consequences of her actions, solidifying her place as a standalone hero.
Spider-Gwen’s Cultural Resonance
Spider-Gwen’s punk-rock aesthetic and iconic costume design by Robbi Rodriguez have made her one of the most visually recognizable characters in the Marvel universe. Her white-and-pink suit with its hooded design is a cosplay favorite and has become synonymous with the modern reinvention of superheroes. This design’s success speaks to the importance of visual storytelling in creating a character’s identity, as Spider-Gwen’s look reflects her rebellious, independent spirit.
The popularity of Spider-Gwen also reflects a shift in comic book audiences. As the medium has expanded to include more women and younger readers, characters like Spider-Gwen have provided new entry points into the superhero genre. Her stories resonate with themes of self-discovery and perseverance, making her a role model for a diverse audience.
3. Gwen Stacy as a Multiverse Icon
I truly believe that the multiverse concept has allowed Gwen Stacy to exist in multiple forms, each contributing to her legacy in unique ways. While Earth-616 Gwen remains a tragic figure, Spider-Gwen has become a vital part of Marvel’s exploration of alternate realities. The Spider-Verse events, both in comics and on-screen, have positioned Gwen as a key player in multiverse narratives, showing how her character transcends her original timeline.
“Into the Spider-Verse” and “Across the Spider-Verse”
Once again, the animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) and Across the Spider-Verse (2023) have brought Gwen Stacy’s multiversal identity to a global audience. Hailee Steinfeld’s portrayal of Spider-Gwen adds layers of emotional depth to the character, particularly in her relationship with Miles Morales and her struggles with her father, Captain Stacy.
In these films, Gwen’s arc is about finding her place in a world that often isolates her because of her dual identity as Spider-Woman. Her relationship with her father is a powerful exploration of love, trust, and the burden of responsibility. The films’ stunning visual representation of her world—rendered in watercolors and abstract designs—emphasizes her emotional journey, creating a visceral connection between her inner turmoil and her external reality.
Spider-Gwen’s prominence in these films cements her as more than just a secondary character in Spider-Man’s story. She’s a leading figure in her own right, driving the narrative and representing themes of resilience and self-discovery.
4. Gwen Stacy’s Evolution as a Feminist Symbol
I also think that Gwen Stacy’s journey from damsel in distress to hero is emblematic of broader cultural shifts in how women are portrayed in media, you know? Like, in her original incarnation, Gwen was intelligent and kind, but she was ultimately defined by her relationships with men—first her father, Captain Stacy, and then Peter Parker. Her death, while narratively impactful, reduced her to a catalyst for Peter’s growth.
The creation of Spider-Gwen reclaims Gwen’s agency, allowing her to define her own story. This reinvention reflects the growing demand for complex, fully realized female characters in superhero narratives. Spider-Gwen’s popularity demonstrates that audiences are hungry for stories where women are active participants in the action, rather than passive victims of it.
Her punk-rock persona and role as the drummer for The Mary Janes further position Gwen as a symbol of individuality and rebellion. She represents a break from traditional norms, embodying a modern feminist ethos that values self-expression and independence.
5. The Enduring Popularity of Gwen Stacy in Pop Culture
Gwen Stacy’s impact extends beyond comics into the broader realm of pop culture. Her appearances in live-action films, animated series, and video games have introduced her to new audiences, solidifying her status as a household name.
Merchandising and Iconography
Spider-Gwen has become a merchandising juggernaut, with her image adorning everything from action figures to clothing lines. Her costume, in particular, has achieved iconic status, representing the marriage of sleek design and storytelling.
A Legacy of Adaptation
The fact that Gwen Stacy continues to be reinvented across media speaks to her adaptability. Each new version of Gwen—whether it’s the tragic Earth-616 Gwen, the heroic Spider-Gwen, or the multiversal leader in the Spider-Verse films—adds new dimensions to her character. This adaptability ensures that Gwen remains relevant in a constantly evolving cultural landscape.
6. Gwen Stacy as a Reflection of Spider-Man’s Core Themes
At her core, Gwen Stacy represents some of the most essential themes in Spider-Man’s mythology: responsibility, loss, and resilience. Whether as Peter Parker’s first great love or as a hero in her own right, Gwen’s story reinforces the idea that tragedy and triumph are intertwined in the superhero experience.
For Peter Parker, Gwen’s death serves as a constant reminder of the stakes of his double life. For readers, Gwen’s rebirth as Spider-Gwen demonstrates that characters can evolve beyond their origins, taking on new meanings and roles for future generations.
Gwen Stacy’s Cultural Impact
My verdict is that Gwen Stacy’s legacy is one of reinvention and resilience. From her origins as a tragic love interest to her rebirth as a multiverse hero, Gwen has become a symbol of the evolving nature of storytelling in comics and media. She challenges traditional narratives, inspires new generations, and continues to be a defining figure in the Spider-Man universe. Whether you know her as Peter’s first love or as Spider-Gwen, Gwen Stacy’s story is one of the most enduring and impactful in superhero history.
