The words “Squirrel - Nut - Zipper” were the launch code for American nuclear devices from 1961-1993, when a band formed with a similar name. After investigation this was determined to be a coincidence so the code was not changed, and remains so to this day.

Squirrel Nut Zippers — Hell
In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay
In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay
People listen attentively
I mean about future calamity
I used to think the idea was obsolete
Until I heard the old man stamping his feet
This is a place where eternally
Fire is applied to the body
Teeth are extruded and bones are ground
And baked into cakes which are passed around
In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay
Beauty, talent, fame, money
Refinement, job skill and brain
But all the things you try to hide
Will be revealed on the other side
In the afterlife
You could be headed for the serious strife
Now you make the scene all day (meet the furnace)
But tomorrow there'll be Hell to pay (yes it is it is hot)
Now the D and A and the M and the N and the A
And the T and the I-O-N
Lose your face
Lose your name
Then get fitted for a suit of flames
Now the D and A and the M and the N and the A
And the T and the I-O-N
Lose your face
Lose your name
Then get fitted for a suit of flames

Ep 292: American Bloodfalls with Tom Maxwell Part
"Usually these things of the accursed have been hushed up or disregarded—suppressed like the seven black rains of Slains—but, upon March 3, 1876, something occurred, in Bath County, Kentucky, that brought many newspaper correspondents to the scene."  -- From Charles Fort’s ‘The Book of the Damned’ c. 1919, Chapter 4
Description:
In our conclusion to our two-part series on American Bloodfalls, we dive deeper into the mysterious phenomenon that baffled witnesses across 19th-century America. Our special guest, Tom Maxwell, guides us through more perplexing incidents of blood and meat raining from the sky, from the famous Kentucky Meat Shower of 1876 to the final recorded event in 1902. We examine the scientific analyses of the time, which often identified the fallen material as animal tissue yet failed to propose any reasonable theories about its origins. Tom helps us navigate the theories proposed over the years and why they fall short when confronted with eyewitness accounts and the scale of events. We’ll discuss connections to biblical accounts and consider how these events might reflect their time's cultural and spiritual climate. Then, of course, we’ll get to the theories, even though the mundane ones have been tough to identify with this legend. But yes, portals and UFOs will probably make the scene.. Tom helps us grapple with how these occurrences challenge humanity’s modern, materialist worldview and why meat showers and bloodfalls seem to have ceased by the early 20th century. Even after all of this time, they continue to defy explanation. However, that won’t stop us from trying to figure it out.

Alastor! It's nearly 4 am and I can't sleep. Sigh. I envy you that you don't need (much? any?) sleep. How do you do that? 😴
So I come to you with another song recommendation. I think you'll like the video as well. It's animated in the style of cartoons of your day...but the darker ones. (The Stephen Foster referenced wrote songs like Camptown Races and Oh Susanna, but you might have known that.) You might like Squirrel Nut Zippers other music, too. They're a swing/jazz band. They even have a song called Hell! Haha
https://youtu.be/xfkShimyhRE?si=bvTAvmvO3fE4PzRz
I think tumblr ate my last ask I sent on Sunday morning and I can't remember what it was anymore...other than I sent you a photo I took. 🤷‍♀️
After while crocodile 🐊

No, darling, I do not need any sleep at all! Hah!
Oh my, what a delightful little cartoon! A bit odd yet endearing. I loved the jazz bit of it. There is a certain charm to older bizarre looking cartoons that have a certain pizazz to it. I quite enjoyed the picture show and the music paired together surprisingly!
Yes I shall go browse the Squirrel Nut Zippers other music when I get a chance!
Met the Ghost of Stephen Foster at the Hotel Paradise This is what I told him as I gazed into his eyes Ships were made for sinking Whiskey made for drinking If we were made of cellophane, we'd all get stinking drunk quite faster ha, ha, ha
Ghost of Stephan Foster is the song of the day, folks!
My apologies, dear, I am slowly getting to everyone's asks. I simply need time but I shall get to them! I do like to think about an ask whenever I get it to craft the perfect response and then spend a bit of time writing it.
See you later, my dear, crocodile!

Concert Review: X
Sat. September 2, 2023 @ Wilbur Theatre (Boston, MA)
Tumblr media
marquee at The Wilbur
L.A. legends X are having quite a moment this Summer. When Elon Musk decided to re-brand Twitter as X last month, the band X had the perfect response! The band is notable for being a part of the L.A. punk scene in the late 70s / early 80s, but in many ways it is kind of reductive to call them just a punk band as they incorporated so many different styles than just punk. They are a band that are bigger than the sum of their parts: D.J. Bonebrake on drums, Billy Zoom on guitar, John Doe on bass and vocals, and of course singer Exene Cervenka. Earlier this Summer I got to interview Cervenka via phone and discuss the current tour and how they have been able to perform songs off their most recent album Alphabetland, released during the Pandemic in 2020, which was also their first album in 27 years! Going into this concert, I was by no means an expert on X, but I have the utmost respect for their contribution to the L.A. music scene at the time. I have their debut album Los Angeles on vinyl in my collection and I've dug them ever since I saw Penelope Spheeris' doc The Decline of Western Civilization, which features X among a ton of their peers like The Germs and Black Flag. The band's song "Los Angeles" has also accompanied me on my trips to L.A.

X onstage
The opening act was Squirrel Nut Zippers, who I hadn't thought of in a long time. They kind of pre-dated the swing phenomenon of 1998, but had some solid songs. They were fun and got the party started. Then Billy Zoom came out and began playing his guitar and he played along with a recording of Link Wray's "Rumble" as the band came out. The Los Angeles album got the most representation of any of their albums and were among my personal faves. They slipped in a few covers including The Doors' "Soul Kitchen" (The Doors' Ray Manzarek famously produced them and they performed with Robby Krieger) and they played some brand news songs they are planning to record after this tour. This concert is the case for aging gracefully in rock: all of the members are in their 60s and 70s and could mop the floor with bands less than half their age. I mean WOW - Serious punk and rockabilly energy you don't see that often! The co-singing between Doe and Cervenka has always been such a strong part of the band's personality and they didn't miss a beat. Doe is also known for his acting and my favorite role of his was as Julianne Moore's ex-husband in Boogie Nights! But I digress. The entire band is tight!

X with Exene in the spotlight
After the show, I got to go backstage. My interview I did with Cervenka was via phone, so it was really nice to get to meet her in person and she couldn't have been any cooler!

There is one very specific song that I hear that makes me think of the witchlight krew and that song is called Bedlam Ballroom by Squirrel Nit Zippers. Like, the whole vibes are just exactly what they have. Squirrel Nut Zippers also have a ton of Gideon and Kremy songs, I think Lover's Lane is definitely my favorite. They have a lot of vibey songs about love that aren't always love songs that also make me think of those two idiots. I mean, Kremy makes me think of jazz and I think he'd actually hate some of their music, lol, but it totally makes me think of him. Like, Hell is a song made for Kremy.
This is definitely an excuse for me to talk about my all time favorite band, but I'm telling you, they've got some good shit. None of this is accurate, it's all vibes because the band is always on my mind, but I will be doing a coalecroux piece inspired by Lover's Lane.

AllMusic Staff Pick: Squirrel Nut Zippers Christmas Caravan
Unfortunately underappreciated, this collection of original and traditional Christmas tunes performed in the Zippers' loose parlor string band style was unavailable for many years, but now seems to be available on many streaming services. An unexpectedly charming and tuneful set that balances silliness with genuine wistfulness. Maybe this year Santa will see fit to put "My Evergreen" into heavy holiday rotation.

Ep 291: American Bloodfalls with Tom Maxwell Part 1
"For millennia, showers of blood, known variously as blood falls, rains of blood, and blood rain, have been reported in sources both historical and literary. The earliest record comes from Homer's Iliad, in which Zeus makes it rain blood 'as a portent of slaughter."  -- Tonight's guest, Tom Maxwell
Description:
Bloodfalls and meat showers - phenomena that sound more like biblical plagues than historical events. Yet, reports of these bizarre occurrences peppered the American landscape for over a century. From Alabama to Massachusetts, Tennessee to California, eyewitnesses sometimes described small red clouds followed by downpours of blood, flesh, and viscera. Some were subjected to the red rain on entirely cloudless days. While many saw divine judgment, skeptics suspected elaborate hoaxes. Scientists proposed numerous theories ranging from vomiting vultures to atmospheric anomalies, while newspapers spread the stories far and wide. But what really happened during these grisly events? Were they connected or separate phenomena with similar descriptions? And why did they seem to stop abruptly at the turn of the 20th century? Join us as we delve into this bloody chapter of American history with our special guest, Tom Maxwell, former frontman of the Squirrel Nut Zippers and bloodfall expert, for Part 1 of this 2-part series. Together, we'll examine not just what fell from the sky, but what these incidents reveal about 19th-century America - its people, its science, and its struggle to make sense of a rapidly changing world. From the fringes of meteorology to the depths of human nature, this is the strange, gruesome, and utterly captivating story of America's reign of blood and meat.
