Oof… I’m not really that great of a theory person. I just have a couple thoughts.

One idea I have (and I think some others have said too) is that Jakob’s job slowly starts to take a very bad mental toll on him. Maybe there could be a sanity meter or something that affects the gameplay? I also saw in the bad ending video that it seems like Jakob has taken on smoking? Possibly as a coping mechanism?

Also in the bad ending video when Jakob is eating he spits out a flower, and it’s the exact same flower the girl (Penny, I assume due to her wearing probably Alberto’s bandana on her wrist.) that was stealing parts for a submarine from the gameplay video was wearing. Somehow the people trying to leave the island were caught. I think Jakob was trying to work AND help Penny at the same time which made him look suspicious to someone…

On another note, usually there’s a second worker in the Papa Louie games, so maybe Jakob won’t be alone? Unless it’s based off the old Pizzeria game with only Roy, that is.

i'll start with the classics like tokyo ghoul and black butler and death note because i did already read the first few volumes of them (like 2 yrs ago tho so ill have to reread)

Anyway my actual recommendations -

Tokyo ghoul and death note are GREAT starting points, two of the best mangas ever written.

The middle of death note does drag a bit, but the ending makes up for it imo. And obviously the first half is some of the best manga ever written. It’s also really short so you may as well, you won’t regret it.

Tokyo ghoul is fantastic, and I really recommend it, ESPECIALLY if you haven’t watched the anime. I wish I read the manga first every day. One of the most beautiful manga I’ve ever read.

I’ve never read black butler but I’ve heard good things.

Now, for my new recommendations (from least to most recommended)

One punch man is gut achingly funny, though I haven’t been keeping up with it

If you get into one piece you won’t run out of entertainment for months, what I’ve read it pretty good and apparently it just keeps getting better.

Spy x family is similarly gut achingly funny, but with a fantastic and gripping plot, especially the newest chapters. It’s one of two mangas I still keep up with for every chapter.

Assassination classroom is hilarious, but heart wrenchingly sad. It’s fantastic. It was my favourite manga for a long time.

And, of course, the big one. Jojo’s bizzare adventure is my favourite manga of all time. It’s one of my favourite pieces of media ever made. There’s genuinely nothing like it. Every part is completely unique, from the martial arts of part 1, to the murder mystery of part 4, to the heists of part 9. I am not kidding when I say that every part is its own genre. It’s also all really good. There’s an argument for all parts to be the best. And the title isn’t lying. In fact, it may be lying by omission. It’s not just bizzare - it’s batshit. In the best possible way. The only problem is that part 1 drags a bit, even though it’s short and imo still really good, so it’s a bit difficult to get into (and you are NOT part skipping, I WILL DISOWN YOU). It’s better than the anime though, so if you’re going to do jojo it’s best to start with the manga (the first three parts are MUCH better as mangas). But once you get to the end of part 1, it’s non stop PEAK. The ending to part 1 is phenomenal. Part 2 has one of the best jojos. Part 3 is a great journey and villain of the week format (along with having the best fight in the entire series). Part 4 is some of the best slice of life I’ve ever read??? Part 5 is basically an anime of the godfather and it’s brilliant. Part 6 is a jailbreak movie, with one of the best endings to anything ever. Part 7 is out of nowhere a literary masterpiece, unironically one of the greatest works of art I’ve ever read (it’s the second highest rated manga of all time for a reason). Part 8 is the pinnacle of Araki as a writer, storyteller, and artist, with a great coming of age (I guess lmao) story. And part 9 is thrilling heists with (imo) the best jojo in the series. The worst part is really fucking good, and the best part is one of the greatest pieces of fiction ever written. I truly cannot recommend it enough. It’s not everyone’s thing - the title is NOT lying, it is weird, at times nonsensical, but never uninteresting. Give it a shot, at least the first 3 parts, they’re not long and if you’re not interested by then you’re not human I think (/j). Once you get to 4 and onwards they keep getting longer, and while they do keep getting better and better, if you’re not into the vibe and stands then you don’t want to read 800 ish chapters more. Oh yeah it is long tbf, the first 3 parts aren’t that long, the next 3 parts are decently sized, then the next 2 alone are longer than a lot of the other manga I’ve recommended lmao. But that’s kinda what happens when you release a manga without any major hiatuses for 30+ years. He only started releasing it monthly in about 2008, so it would be way longer lmao. But the monthly releases are worth it, it instantly gets wayyyyyyy better. You’ll notice it in steel ball run (part 7). And once you’re finished you’ll be able to wait with me for part 9, which has been FANTASTIC so far, and I’m really excited to see more.

The only problem is: how do you read it? Answer: I don’t know. Probably mangadex? Don’t read the official translations, they change almost every name in the series due to copyright (every stand and a lot of characters are named after songs and bands) and it a.) works way less and b.) will make communicating with other jojo fans really difficult. I read the first 8 parts using Jojo’s coloured adventure (though I don’t recommend the coloured manga, the black and white is much better), which was an all in one place fan translation, but I don’t think it exists anymore. I recommend researching which translations are the best and then reading them on mangadex. The thing about it is that the translations I read are only for the newly released chapters I’m pretty sure, so giving you their names wouldn’t help at all. I’ve read a few chapters of phantom blood on mangadex and like… it’s alright. The phrasing is a bit clunky, but overall it’s good.

Some last things: the early parts are a bit sexist at times, the women are still really well written like erina, Lisa Lisa, and suzi q, but the first 3 parts have the odd “beaten by a mere woman!!?” And stuff. But even then there’s a lot of subversions of sexism, like Lisa Lisa being really fucking strong (and even then Araki regrets having not written her as more of a main character). But once you get past part 3 it basically stops. Araki is really progressive with his writing, he wanted part 5 to have a female jojo, but his editors didn’t let him, but once part 6 came around he put his foot down and made half of the cast women (and even then he still was forced to change someone to a man). I’m pretty sure he even said the quote “the fact that readers don’t want the jojo to be a woman is exactly why she needs to be a woman” or something similar. Part 8’s best written character is a woman, and in part 9 we’ve got a weird genderqueer thing (I love dragona but it’s really hard to say whether they’re trans or not lmao. Imo they are, but obviously you shouldn’t assume. At the very least they aren’t out yet. Tho they take hrt. Lmao). Basically what I’m saying is it gets a lot better.

Once you’ve caught up I really recommend the anime! The first 3 parts are a downgrade imo (especially part 3, yikes they completely massacred it. The beginning is great and the last fight is phenomenally done though), but part 4 is an upgrade, especially since they had the hindsight of the villain (Araki originally wanted 3 to be the end, so part 4 didn’t really have a plan for the first half of its story) and could sprinkle him throughout. I haven’t watched 5 or 6 yet, but apparently 5 is fantastic and 6 is really good. But I’d definitely recommend reading it first, and then watching it once you’re obsessed.

If anything you should read the first 6 parts as homework for steel ball run. I love the first 6 parts to death, but 7,8, and 9 are so so so good, and steel ball run is, like, a classic manga. It’s the fucking great gatsby of manga. Or maybe to kill a mockingbird? Idk.

Anyway I’m sorry this is long I really really really like Jojo. Like I said, it’s my favourite manga of all time, and one of my favourite media franchises in general. I could gush about it for hours (and I guess I just did whoops lmao).

The most aggressive, reckless driver, but is dangerously good at it. Will cut across multiple lanes but has never even scratched a car.

Lied to everyone in his first week of college about his entire life (different lie per person) just for fun. He finally started telling the truth but nobody believes him.

Started a school poker club and promptly got kicked out of it for betting too much, and then winning it every time. (He just wanted a way to make money. The school did not like that).

STEM major. His work is impossible but he never complains about it. Also a dancer (not my hc). He complains about that a lot.

Has worked almost every retail job under the sun. Also complains about that.

Carries around cigarettes for the vibe but rarely smokes them. Just in case anyone else wants one. Has made friends with many random people this way.

Spot:

Brooklyn baby. Cannot drive. Is terrified of it but, when Race tried to teach him, he yelled at everyone and blamed other people for what was definitely his fault. Refuses to admit that.

Played football but seriously injured his knee (explanation for the cane) but doesn't talk about it much. Always comes up with a new reason for the injury that is entirely ridiculous, but since he delivers it with a straight face everybody believes him.

Absolutely no rhythm. Never goes to parties, even though he is in a fraternity (a very chill one, thank you very much). If he's ever at a party, it's because he's a sober contact, and he is the most unsympathetic person when it comes to taking care of drunk people unless it's Race.

Insists on sitting alone in the back of the lecture hall, even if he has friends in his class.

Crutchie:

Also an incredibly reckless driver but HAS gotten into accidents before. (Only twice, both times because he was racing a friend on the highway. Never serious but always stupid).

Very fidgety and usually making noises under his breath/drumming on shit. Drives everybody around him crazy.

The kind of guy to argue with a professor in a lecture, but only when he's sure he's right (which is always).

So many illegal things in his dorm: candles, toaster, air fryer, multiple animals.

Double majoring in a STEM and humanities field, always references one when in classes for the other and confuses everybody, but he sees a connection between them.

I like the idea that he goes to the gym with Albert a lot. (U wld never catch me taking away his disability so in my head he loveeees to bench and is so buff).

First, I respect Sky for using Fi’s tracking system(forgot how it’s called in Game). Hated that mechanic in game so much that I would do anything to not use it. Most time I also found it useless, sorry Fi.

Love that THAT is the exactly how you run 80% of the time with your sword in hand in Skyward Sword! Gotta love the detail!

Legend and Hyrule: looking at Time

Wild, Twilight and Four: looking at Warriors

Wars and Time are looking at each other.

I already speculate that Time only falls at leader position, because he is the oldest, and that Time and Warriors stand in the same position, both lead in good teamwork together. Warriors as a captain has been clearly brought more into focus the last couple of updates, and I think he will take more role as a leader during battle plans.

Lot of people put Twilight in this, but he is more passive leading, being a big brother his priority is to make everyone feel protected and safe. Pointing Time and Warriors clearly out as guides for the chain.

I can not tell where Sky’s position really is. As far as I am reading it right, I speculate that he is quietly taking everything in. Not only the other of the chain, but all the new things he is learning on the surface. In the game Sky is said to be a dreamer, always with his mind somewhere, but a quick learner.

So I am putting him as the Information gather(?), of the chain.

Diavolo's Character Design

(This is part of a series of posts about Diavolo’s character, though they can be read in any order. The links to the rest are here.)

Though Diavolo’s character design is a relatively superficial aspect of his character, I find it interesting to talk about. Here, I will dissect the general controversy surrounding Diavolo’s visual design and how it likely impacts a lot of his fanbase perception.

Diavolo’s Real Design vs. Diavolo’s “Shadow Design”

Diavolo's visual design alone has caused disdain among the fanbase, and it's true that a lot about the way he looks is plain weird. The spots in his hair, the tattoos, the armbands, the coattails, the lace-top thing... Where do I even start?

When lined up with the rest of the Vento Aureo cast and compared to Doppio, the design by itself is not that shocking. Still, Diavolo in particular gets more hate for his design than your average Jojo character, and this likely due to both the kind of character that he is and how his visual representation was handled.

Diavolo's reveal was especially jarring for a lot of people due to his previous "shadow" design, his silhouette in previous scenes depicting a much more typical mobster look with short, slicked-back hair and a fancy suit.

(It’s notable that this problem is exacerbated by the anime adaptation. In the manga, Diavolo's "silhouette" is generally far less defined, looking more like a vague humanoid blob than anything.

Additionally, several other characters, like Sale and Prosciutto, were given similar “silhouette” designs before their reveals that were removed in the anime, so this was not always a Diavolo-specific phenomenon.

There are still shadowy and suited depictions of Diavolo in the manga, but I’ll get into what I think that’s supposed to represent.)

The juxtaposition between Diavolo’s suited and revealed form, alongside it being about the same time the characters change how they refer to him from “The Boss” to “Diavolo”, made a lot of viewers confused. It's a common criticism that these two appearances feel like two different characters, and I can understand that sentiment.

I do not believe that Diavolo’s shadow form was ever intended to be what he actually looks like. Instead, I interpret the "suited Diavolo" look as representing more of an idea of him conceived by the other characters.

For example, take this panel of Pericolo describing the Boss's decisions to Bucciarati's group, depicting him in a fancy, expensive suit, standing confidently in the middle of what appears to be a town.

The image of him flaunts his power and status, making him seem grand and untouchable. It also matches some other scenes with the suited Diavolo, like when he stands menacingly out of view from Bruno while he rips him apart.

In both of these scenes, none of the characters are actually “seeing” him here- Bruno comes out of the church with no description of his physique or clothing, suggesting he was actually entirely hidden.

Therefore, these shadowy suited forms are likely instead simple ideas of what a “Boss” would look like from characters with no actual conception of his identity or appearance. The gap of our knowledge is filled in with a basic template of a man with short hair wearing a suit; it is totally possible that he doesn’t actually look anything like it.

To prove my point more, compare these scenes with the imagined suited Diavolo to our very first real, direct shot of him in the present, with nobody around to perceive or imagine him. Here, he's not actually suited at all; he's huddled in the corner of a dark room, covering his face with a cloak.

Instead of the distinguished, high-class mobster in a fancy suit we see in the shadow forms, here, he appears feeble- a little pathetic, even, and evidently undressed beyond the cloak that hides him. It’s a far more logically fitting “look” for Diavolo, someone who seeks to be unseen, than an image of him that physically flaunts his status to others.

We do get a scene displaying the regular shadow Diavolo design while no one is around, but this is after he has encountered the other characters and some idea of him has been placed in their minds. This scene is after he has been perceived by the characters, so we now see him as their perception of him.

When “Shadow Diavolo” is read through this lens, his real appearance being wildly different can actually be quite meaningful. It turns out he’s a completely different-looking person than we assumed, much like his surprise attempted murder of Trish coming as a shock and betrayal. It’s fitting for a character so dedicated to erasing his identity only to fail and reveal his true nature in the end.

King Crimson As Diavolo

Another thing important to mention here is that King Crimson frequently visually serves as Diavolo more than his physical body does.

Diavolo’s silhouette is often depicted as standing behind King Crimson, who draws the viewer’s attention while he stays just out of sight. Beyond purely using his Stand to kill, Diavolo often speaks and acts through it, even while he’s alone. In the anime, King Crimson is used as a visual representation of what Doppio is talking to. Even during the final fight, rather than his actual soul, Diavolo is represented through King Crimson as he inhabits Trish’s body and sneaks inside the group.

People focus on Diavolo’s silhouette so much when discussing his design, but the major visual focus was never on the silhouette so much as it was on his Stand. King Crimson is more expressive and attention-drawing and it is the biggest visual representation of Diavolo’s dominance and threat; it conceals and distracts from Diavolo’s body to represent how he uses his power to hide his identity.

This is another major detail of his character that makes Diavolo unique among Jojo villains. I almost want to say that visually, King Crimson feels more like the main villain than Diavolo does at times. (The most similar villain in this regard is probably Toru because his Stand was initially believed to be an entirely separate person and is thus built to feel like one.)

However, there was still certainly emphasis put on revealing his actual appearance, which raises the question: Is his final design an improvement?

Is His Revealed Design Good?

It’s still a common complaint that Diavolo should've looked "more like" his suit form; I have always disagreed with this, though.

Diavolo’s suited form is boring for a major villain and is also far too alike to Kira's similar short-hair-and-suit look. It is too generic for a cast that pops out like Vento Aureo's (and the part seems dedicated to having none of the Stand user gangsters look like typical gangsters anyway). I don't think people would've enjoyed the design that much if it turned out to be what he actually looked like, nor do I think it would've made him better.

Though, to be honest, I could not give you a straight answer on whether or not I think Diavolo’s final character design is good or bad. Looping back to the contradictory nature of his writing, I think it both works and does not work.

The strangest thing to me is that Diavolo’s design doesn’t seem to communicate anything about him aside from being sharp and aggressive in comparison to Doppio being soft and boyish. Other than that, if anything, Diavolo's design seems to actively contradict major aspects of him. (Why would Diavolo of all people openly display tattoos- AKA, identifying marks- all over his arms?)

His design is put more into context with the knowledge that Araki intended him to be "punk". Once you know that, things make more sense- this definitely looks like a Jojo's-esque attempt at a "punk" look. However, Diavolo has zero connection to punk as a subculture that I can think of other than the general shared theme of societal rebellion as well as both gangsters and punks being generally seen as "cool". It’s still a weird choice, if not weirder.

But in some sense, I also think that his design being seemingly contradictory to his character fits with his nature being full of misdirections and oddities. Diavolo’s design being so weird could easily speak to his desire of anonymity being in direct contrast with his actual nature being so noticeable. It’s a design that makes you react with “What?”- and since confusion is a big aspect of Diavolo, that kind of works, doesn’t it?

Beyond that, I don’t think I could give any opinion that is more substantive than various fashion trend tidbits and subjective babbling not worth putting into a large analysis post. I’ve developed from finding his design strange to having an acquired affection for it, but another person might hate it, and there’s nothing I can really say about that. (I will say that I think the way the design evokes a wide spectrum of both positive and negative reactions from people is very fun.)

Regardless of however I may feel personally, the dissatisfaction many have for this design is undeniable. As a result, it’s easy to wonder if this design has impacted the way people view and depict his character.

Does This Impact Character Comprehension?

People having a feeling of disconnect between “Diavolo” and “The Boss” to the point where they struggle to connect them as the same character would explain some lack of character comprehension he receives. A lot about Diavolo appears different during the final fight compared to the scenes where he’s drenched in shadow, and if the final arc is all you take away from him, your perception of his character will become skewed.

For example, note that one of Diavolo’s big personality traits is that he changes demeanor when he’s losing control. When he’s posturing over his dying enemies or things are playing out according to his plan, he’s calm, composed, and icy cold. When his power over a situation slips, like something unexpected happening, he starts yelling and becoming more frantic. This becomes progressively more pronounced as the plot spirals out of his control, culminating in the final fight where he’s screaming and swearing in a barely-masked panic.

Having a disconnect between Diavolo’s shadow and revealed appearances would muddle this. If all you absorb from Diavolo is how he acts when you see his face, then you probably would just take away “angry villain who screams a lot”- despite all of the screentime he gets where he’s not angry or screaming. The scenes where he’s at his most threatening and domineering, his pure intimidation factor of being totally unknown and more powerful than any of the main cast, wouldn’t have effect in the final fight where all of that is gone.

It’s also notable that other characters seeing his face is, in and of itself, a signifier of his desperation and becoming more cornered, because his entire goal is to not be seen in the first place. Being seen at all is not a usual state for him to be in, but this is commonly forgotten.

I cannot completely blame the fanbase for this misunderstanding as I have many complaints about the final fight’s writing. It is easily the weakest portion of Diavolo’s screentime despite being the most vital, which doesn’t help the memorability of his final design. I have the suspicion that it likely set up his design for a bad reception no matter what it was.

I find Diavolo’s design notable to discuss because the common summarization of “he had short hair and a suit but then there was a sudden change to making him shirtless and long-haired” really doesn’t cut it. When picked apart, there’s a lot of interesting potential symbolism and meaning behind Diavolo’s seemingly shifting appearance, but poor communication and messy execution led to polarizing thoughts and common misunderstandings about the intent behind his design.

In my opinion, Diavolo’s design is an acquired taste. It can feel awkward and thoughtless at first glance, but it begins to make some sense upon deeper context (and it gets easier on the eyes over time). I won’t deny that it’s messy and strange, but even that fits with his writing. With some better implementation, I think it could’ve been received with less (though, never zero) vitriol.

Erina is such a polite girl. So, she keeps most of her questions to herself and she tries to keep out of the way of your STAND but if you have it pick her up from falling over, she will be frightened by the invisible hands but thankful to your own kindness. If you let her, she’ll try touch your STAND

Erina may be a bit suspicious about such a existence, but she does believe you and would love to learn more about a STAND user

DIO

DIO cannot believe your STAND is so much like his The World that he is completely interested in you straight away. You can stop time as well? He must know exactly the limits and abilities of your time-stopping STAND to figure out how it ties to The World

DIO is annoyed by how you don’t use your STAND for the right reasons but for such nonsensical reasons. STANDS are built for battle and you’re using your extremely powerful one to do such mundane tasks since you proclaim; “it is more comfortable for you”. Don’t be such a moron!

DIO may have a matching ability to yours but not even he can predict nor notice you using the time stop. You’ll be somewhere as he turns away then you’ll be gone from the room when he turns back. DIO knows to always be ready as your STAND and The World can openly clash
