Drake-Norris Expedition
The Drake-Norris expedition of April-July 1589 CE, otherwise known as the Don Antonio Expedition, English Armada or Portugal Expedition, was an unsuccessful attempt by a large English naval and army force to destroy the remaining ships of the Spanish Armada of Philip II of Spain (r. 1556-1598 CE), to reinstate Don Antonio as king of Portugal, and to seize Spanish treasure ships in the Azores. The expedition had a mix of private and state financial backing and was led by Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540-1596 CE) and Sir John Norris (aka Norreys, c. 1547-1597 CE), hence its name. Not all parties agreed to the triple aims of the expedition, Drake and Norris ignored the Armada ships, Elizabeth I of England (r. 1558-1603 CE) was outraged Lisbon had been attacked by land and sea instead, and by the time the English had been beaten off by Spanish forces they were too late to catch the treasure ships. A dismal failure with thousands dead from battle and disease, the English fleet returned home with little to show for their hugely expensive efforts and the Anglo-Spanish war dragged on until 1604 CE.

FIRE OVER ENGLAND (1937)

FIRE OVER ENGLAND
1937
Fire Over England is a historic film directed by William K. Howard and written by Clemence Dane, based on the novel by AEW Mason (1936). The film is set during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I during English victory over the Spanish Armada.
The film stars Flora Robson as Queen Elizabeth I, Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, and James Mason. This was the first time Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh appeared together on screen (they were a couple in real life). Leigh’s performance in this film helped convince David O. Selznick to cast her as Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939).
The original title of the film was ‘Glorianna’, and was filmed at Denham Studios in England. They used a large water tank to film the Spanish Armada scene using model ships.
This was the first British film to premier in Los Angeles, the film gained positive reviews initially, however the film lacked historical accuracy. Today the film doesn’t rate as well with modern audiences this could be largely due to it being historical fiction as well as using many characters that didn’t exist in real life.

The Defeat of the Spanish Armada Hans Tisdall I can’t resist browsing books on shelves in pubs that were bought to decorate the pub rather than to be read. Occasionally you see a gem, like this dust jacket designed by Tisdall, whose calligraphy for Jonathan Cape is as distinctive as Berthold Wolpe’s was for Faber & Faber. 27th July 1586, English explorer, politician, spy and pirate (according to the Spanish), Sir Walter Raleigh brings the first tobacco to England from Virginia. The plant was already known to the English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, who referred to it as the "sacred herb", because it was considered medicinal. The first recorded use in England of it being smoked, was recorded by English clergyman William Harrison in 1573. Despite its popularity, Stuart King James I, and VI of Scotland, wrote of his dislike of tobacco in a pamphlet titled ‘A Counterblaste to Tobacco’ in 1604; stating that it was a custom ‘ lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, and dangerous to the Lungs’, On the same day and year, English astronomer Sir Thomas Harriot, who is also known to history as the first person to draw a map of the moon, brings the first potatoes to Europe; on return to England after being part of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke expedition. The potato became a staple of European food by the 19th century, especially in Ireland, staving off famine, throughout periods of war, and climate change triggered by the last interval of the Little Ice Age. 29th July 1588, the Spanish Armada fleet is scattered and damaged by the English Navy, following the Battle of Gravelines in the Spanish Netherlands. On the previous day, the English had sailed fireships into the armada which began the breaking up of the ships’ close formation. Both navies after the battle suffered horrifically with the English ships suffering an outbreak of typhus, with further disease and starvation killing the sailors. The Spanish Armada with many damaged ships after the battle were pursued by the English until (Continued in the comments). #walterraleigh #sirwalterraleigh #elizabethi #elizabethan #tobaccoleaf #virginiahistory #jamesi #potatohistory #potato #roanoke #roanokevirginia #16thcentury #ageofdiscovery #spanisharmada #tudorhistory #littleiceage #shipwreck #shipwrecks #thespanisharmada #sirfrancisdrake #britishhistory #englishhistory #claypipe #claypipes #claypipesmoker #historicalstory #historystory #thehumblepotato #thepotato #tobaccopipe https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9Q6uInAWF/?utm_medium=tumblr

Galleon
The galleon (Spanish: galeón, French: galion) was a type of sailing ship used for both cargo carrying and as a warship. Galleons dominated the seas in the second half of the 16th century, and with their lower superstructures, they were much more manoeuvrable and seaworthy than previous ship types like the carrack.

The Spanish Armada, pt. 2. #england ‘s destiny rested with the 24 ships of war and about 50 merchant vessels awaiting Philip’s fleet. The battleships on both sides were probably about the same size - around 1,000 tons - but the English guns were superior. The #englishvessels were also sleeker, designed for plundering and maneuvering in coastal waters, the #spanishships , by contrast, were lumbering and broad beamed, made for stability as they carried the spoils of the New World across the #atlanticocean . English crews and commanders - men such as #sirfrancisdrake , #sirjohnhawkins and #sirmartinfrobisher - were also more experienced. #spanisharmada #spainhistory #englandhistory #kingphilipii https://www.instagram.com/p/CKw9WUwLKEF/?igshid=err1em00qn5p

Book your Private Tour with Giants Causeway Tours, link in our bio or visit www.giantscauseway.tours An Leac Fhada (Irish/Gaelige) Lacada Point the Chimney Stacks The Girona was one of four galleass of the Spanish Armada. She carried with her 121 sailors and 186 soldiers and had stopped off for supplies and repairs at Killybegs harbour. A local Irish chieftain offered the ship assistance and while anchored they came across around 1000 survivors of two Armada ships that had run aground off Mayo and Donegal. To avoid being tracked down and killed by English soldiers they decided to leave Ireland and sail for Scotland where they could rest and repair before sailing home. As soon as the rudder was fixed they loaded all the men, nearly 1300, and set sail from Killybegs. But the ship never made it very far and met disaster. On the night of 26th October 1588 a heavy gale struck the ship, the rudder broke and the ship foundered, sinking off Lacada Point, Co. Antrim. The death toll was enormous and there were only 9 survivors. #giantscausewaytours #giantscauseway #lacadapoint #girona #chimneystack #thegiantscauseway #ireland #northernireland #belfast #armada #spanisharmada #unescoworldheritage #beauty #beautiful #amazing #awesome #instatour #instatraveling #travel #tour #irish #photooftheday #phototour #photo #visitireland #visitnorthernireland #explore #discover #photo #landscape #landscapephotography (at The Giant's Causeway) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCwtRSqhJg8/?igshid=xljyglh5d4ug
