The Tower of London is a castle located in London alongside the River Thames which was first built by William the Conqueror from c. 1077 and significantly added to over the centuries. Often referred to in England as simply 'the Tower', it has served as a fortress, palace, prison, treasury, arsenal, and zoo. A castle with the darkest of reputations, fallen kings, queens, and traitors were amongst those sent to the Tower, although surprisingly few inmates were executed within the castle's grounds. Today, it is a major tourist attraction with visitors eager to experience for themselves a place steeped in the history of England like no other, to admire the picturesque Beefeaters, and be dazzled by the fabulous Crown Jewels.

WALTER RALEIGH
d. 29 October 1618
Walter Raleigh was an English soldier and explorer, a well-known figure during Queen Elizabeth I's reign, and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada.
In 1591, he secretly married Elizabeth I’s lady-in-waiting, Elizabeth Throckmorton. After the queen died, he was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London under King James I for treason for being involved in a plot against the king. During the search of El Dorado in 1616, his men ransacked a Spanish outpost which was against the terms of his pardon. When he returned to England, he was arrested and executed in Westminster. He was shown the axe that would be used to behead him and he stated that the axe was ‘a Physician for all diseases and miseries.’ His head was embalmed and presented to his wife, his body was laid to rest in St. Margaret’s, Westminster. Lady Raleigh kept his head in a velvet bag until her death 29 years later. His head was removed and was interred with his body. His death was seen as ‘unjust’.

Walter Raleigh

27th July 1586, English explorer, politician, spy and pirate (according to the Spanish), Sir Walter Raleigh brings the first tobacco to England from Virginia. The plant was already known to the English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, who referred to it as the "sacred herb", because it was considered medicinal. The first recorded use in England of it being smoked, was recorded by English clergyman William Harrison in 1573. Despite its popularity, Stuart King James I, and VI of Scotland, wrote of his dislike of tobacco in a pamphlet titled ‘A Counterblaste to Tobacco’ in 1604; stating that it was a custom ‘ lothsome to the eye, hatefull to the Nose, harmefull to the braine, and dangerous to the Lungs’, On the same day and year, English astronomer Sir Thomas Harriot, who is also known to history as the first person to draw a map of the moon, brings the first potatoes to Europe; on return to England after being part of Sir Walter Raleigh’s Roanoke expedition. The potato became a staple of European food by the 19th century, especially in Ireland, staving off famine, throughout periods of war, and climate change triggered by the last interval of the Little Ice Age. 29th July 1588, the Spanish Armada fleet is scattered and damaged by the English Navy, following the Battle of Gravelines in the Spanish Netherlands. On the previous day, the English had sailed fireships into the armada which began the breaking up of the ships’ close formation. Both navies after the battle suffered horrifically with the English ships suffering an outbreak of typhus, with further disease and starvation killing the sailors. The Spanish Armada with many damaged ships after the battle were pursued by the English until (Continued in the comments). #walterraleigh #sirwalterraleigh #elizabethi #elizabethan #tobaccoleaf #virginiahistory #jamesi #potatohistory #potato #roanoke #roanokevirginia #16thcentury #ageofdiscovery #spanisharmada #tudorhistory #littleiceage #shipwreck #shipwrecks #thespanisharmada #sirfrancisdrake #britishhistory #englishhistory #claypipe #claypipes #claypipesmoker #historicalstory #historystory #thehumblepotato #thepotato #tobaccopipe https://www.instagram.com/p/CR9Q6uInAWF/?utm_medium=tumblr

There’s a new podcast episode out, and we’re diving into the first two chapters of Shadow of Night! We meet some of Matthew’s crew including this guy here on the left, Walter Raleigh (as painted by Nicholas Hilliard circa 1585. Yes, the same Hilliard that painted Matthew and Diana’s miniatures.) We bring some levity (as you know we do now and again!) and fondly compare his likeness to Tom Mison (the chap on the right), as well break down the other finer details of these chapters. . . #Repost @DaemonsDiscuss: 🎧NEW Take 26 - The One With the Boys 🌟 Description: The reader, like the collective heap of vampire and witch, is splashed into 1590, and it seems the temperature not as quite as comfortable as we had hoped! In this episode, we explore the first two chapters of our favorite book in this series, Shadow of Night. We find that Matthew Clairmont's past is not quite a tidy hole that Diana Bishop's future could easily squeeze into! Join us as we meet Kit, George, Thomas, Henry and Walter (aka, The School of Night). .

On This Day In History . 29 October 1618 . Sir Walter Raleigh was executed . . Raleigh was an English explorer, author, courtier, & favourite of Elizabeth I. . ◼ Elizabeth's successor, James I of England & VI of Scotland, disliked Raleigh, & in 1603 he was accused of plotting against the king & sentenced to death. This was reduced to life imprisonment & Raleigh spent the next 12 years in the Tower of London. . ◼ In 1616, Raleigh was pardoned & released to lead a second expedition to search for El Dorado, the fabled 'Golden Land', rumoured to be situated somewhere beyond the mouth of the Orinoco river in Guiana (now Venezuela). . ◼ The expedition was a failure, & Raleigh also defied the king's instructions by attacking the Spanish. On his return to England, the death sentence was reinstated & Raleigh's execution took place on 29 October 1618. . ◼ On 29 October 1618 Raleigh was beheaded in the Old Palace Yard at the Palace of Westminster. "Let us dispatch", he said to his executioner. "At this hour my ague comes upon me. I would not have my enemies think I quaked from fear." After he was allowed to see the axe that would be used to behead him, he mused: "This is a sharp Medicine, but it is a Physician for all diseases & miseries." According to biographers, Raleigh's last words (as he lay ready for the axe to fall) were: "Strike, man, strike!" . ⬛ Gruesome Fact: His head was embalmed & presented to his wife! It has been said that Lady Raleigh kept her husband's head in a velvet bag until her death. After Raleigh's wife's death 29 years later, his head was returned to his tomb & interred at St. Margaret's Church. .
