9th April 1747, Scottish Clan chief Simon Fraser, 12th baron Lovat, known as ‘the Fox’, becomes the last man in British history to be beheaded for his support of Bonnie Prince Charlie, and the Jacobite rebellion, which supported the reinstatement of the house of Stuart on the the throne. The rebellion ended after its initial successes at the Battle of Culloden in 1745, which took place on the 16th April 1746. 10th April 1512, birth of James V, King of Scotland, who reigned from this day until 1542. The third son of King James IV of Scotland and his wife Margaret Tudor, daughter of Henry VII of England and sister of Henry VIII. In October 1542, the Scots survived a serious defeat to the English at the Battle of Solway Moss. Said to be grief stricken after the defeat, it is claimed that he died of a nervous collapse in December. In his deathbed he was given the news that his daughter was born. This daughter would be crowned Mary Queen of Scots when he died six days later. Josie Rourke - Mary Queen of Scots (2018) This film had potential. A pretty good cast, an exploration of two very interesting and powerful women in a period where they were the exception and had to carry both the burden of power and palatial intrigue together with the fact that they were women and therefore seen as inferiors by their male peers. It also has pretty amazing sets and clothing etc. However, sometimes you can have all the ingredients to make something good and you end up with a pretty amorphous tasteless dish. That's what this film is. It just goes through the motions of a costume drama with little psychological exploration of the characters and a lot of trite moments and stilted dialogue. This is particularly serious as it came out the same year where you had a fantastic example of a film dealing with similar subjects, The Favourite, which just does everything right that this film misses. This is too self-serious and unimaginative to be interesting, too fictionalized to work as a kind of "documentary" and just overall dull. It's a pity because it looks pretty good and has a great cast. Oh well. Tonight I became a Dame of the order of thecrownofStuart in honour of my writing; specifically my historic #research & writing on the #Stuart Queen's & #Kings & their #DeMedici consorts from 1542-1714 #maryqueenofscotts to #QueenAnne. It was under the Stuart stewardship the quintessential traditions & characteristics which define Britishness were forged. The #Stuart's introduced #tea & intellectual tea #salons opera & tolerance & began the tradition of marking occasions by the drinking of sparkling #champagne - rejected by the #French who thought the bubbles spoilt the dignity of the wine. Most significantly the Stuart's #celebrated The Arts Beauty & Pleasure & #Eccentricity The Civil War led by Protestant Puritans aimed to eliminate #TheArts #Beauty & #Pleasure from Britain believing them intrinsically sinful. Creators of art beauty & pleasure - & those who approved were damned as #papist - whether or not they were Catholic. By 1560 Catholics were persecuted & martyred throughout the kingdom & living in the shadows. Yet the term #papist lingered as the ultimate insult for any creative or lover of fun. All that changed in 1660 #KingCharlesII was restored to the throne & according to #Diarists #Pepys & #Evelyn - the fountains flowed with champagne for a full fortnight & the population danced & sang in the streets dressed in their finest cloths #poets #artists #dandys & #composers who only weeks before were damned as papists & #jeered were suddenly lauded & cheered. The term #papist was replaced by the term #eccentric & honoured. Eccentricity could elevate a person's social standing. The Stuart Courts welcomed true Eccentricity regardless of humble background or gender. In 1660 KingCharlesII embarked on a building scheme to transform the Papist Killing Fields of Tyburn into Mayfair, a paradise celebrating Eccentrics, designed by the world's first woman architect #LadyElizabethWilbraham Residential #garden-squares & #glass-fronted shopping arcades were rebuilt in 1710 & 1840 but Mayfair remains a sybaritic playground for Eccentrics & the perfect to raise a cup of tea or a saucer of #Champagne to the Stuart Monarchy who made it possible (at The Ritz London)
