The 278th anniversary of the Battle of Culloden

On the 19th of August 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard at Glenfinnan. Lochiel arrived with 600 men, MacDonald of Keppoch 350, and 150 Clanranald supporters under MacDonald of Morar.

Less than a year later, on the 16th of April 1746, Charlie and his men made their doomed last stand at Culloden against the Duke of Cumberland and his Redcoat army. Of the 1,300 men that fell that day, 1,250 of them were Jacobites. The battle, saw the final Jacobite Rising come to a head. Culloden was the last battle to be fought on British soil.

16th April 1746. Date of the Battle of Culloden, the last battle fought on British soil, and the end of the Jacobite rising in 1745. The battle was the last attempt to place a Catholic Stuart monarch back upon the throne. The aftermath of the battle saw the destruction of the highland way of life, and also a subsequent crackdown instigated by the Duke of Cumberland, earning him the title ‘the butcher of Cumberland’. In the same year, an act of parliament was passed outlawing the wearing of tartan, and highland dress. Here are pictures of Culloden Battlefield, it’s such a shame the jacobites lost the battle... i also had to take a picture of the stone dedicated to diana gabaldon because im a huge outlander fan but I didn’t take a picture of the clan stones or specifically “Clan Fraser” because i feel its sad that one specific clan stone is getting more attention because of fiction when all Clans fought and died for what they believed in on the battlefield.

Culloden Commemoration 2023

Sunday the 16th of April 2023 is the 277th Anniversary of the Battle of Culloden. The Battle of Culloden was the final confrontation of the Jacobite rising of 1745. On April 16, 1746, the Jacobite army of Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force under the Duke of Cumberland son of the Hanoverian King George II. The battle lasted only an hour, with between 1500 and 2000 Jacobites killed or wounded.

The Fraser Stone at Culloden has been cordoned off to protect the site from damage. This ongoing protection and preservation of the graves is crucial to honour those who fought and died there.

Visitors to Culloden were repeatedly asked to 'respect' the graveyard, and the Fraser stone at Culloden Battlefield, which became a landmark for Outlander fans, now has been sealed.

The site owned by the NTS covers only a third of the actual battleground, while the wider area is for the most part under private ownership.

The unique atmosphere of Culloden Battlefield should be guarded against Outlander fans, after the “awkward” and inappropriate appearances around Fraser Stone. Culloden Battlefield must be protected as one of Scotland's treasures. We recognise and respect the deep spiritual connection and relationship that Culloden has with Scotland. The graves of those of the Scottish clans who fell during the Battle of Culloden are cultural property. Do not enter the battlefield if you do not respect the fallen.
