Oh sorry, I meant mane 6 queer headcanons 🧡 and maybe other characters if you want to add them too, I just wanna peek
Sorry to ask again, but I still don't understand what you mean by "queer headcanons". A queer headcanon could be anything to me. Do you want to know what I hc their sexuality? Or what ships I like with them? How they dress/present? How they're involved with each other or the LGBT community?

hello loves i'm so sorry for the delay!! life has been kicking my ass lately BUT i've been reading some good fics still and i'm happy to share them <3
this is a mix of fics with all ratings, so some include NSFW content. please take a look at both the ratings and the fic tags before reading! some might also contain spoilers for season 8.
if you come across something you like in this list, remember to show some love to the author by leaving kudos and a comment!
any way the wind blows | notathingtoseehere | 10.1k | M
A post s08e08 look into how Buck could backslide into his season 1 habits when his best friend leaves him. hmmm tis the season of speculation for many more months... may i recommend this one to start off with? i love a return to buck 1.0 so much!! also op i need you to know i did in fact say good job out loud lol
can i be close to you? | myemergence | 4.2k | T
“Woah, woah,” Chim laughs, “please, Buck, do not tell us what or who it is you’ve been dreaming about.” A fic written for a prompt on the Buddie discord, about forehead kisses. Fluff ensues. yes i have in fact been going through the entire buddie forehead kisses tag this past week. no i do not wat to talk about it. but i DO want to talk about this lovely little fic!!
cool | LovelyLittleGrim | 5.6k | T
Buck keeps kissing Eddie on the forehead. Eddie has some THOUGHTS about it. eddie has thoughts and so i do and those thoughts are that buck should keep doing this forever and ever <3 so cute!!
eddie diaz can't have sex | notathingtoseehere | 11.9k | M
Eddie Diaz would like to say that the 118 needs a more involved HR department, or maybe he just needs friends who do less meddling. i love firefam shenanigans and i love demi eddie and i love buddie so basically i love this fic <3
eddie diaz vs the buck's boyfriend agenda | songbvrd/@songbvrd | 23.4k | M
Eddie starts gathering information about why no one trusts Tommy. As he grows to hate their relationship more, he learns more about himself and what he wants. eddie's agenda 🤝 my agenda. all of this author's works are a delight and this is no exception <3
feels like falling in love | justhockey | 5.2k | not rated
five times Eddie doesn’t mean to kiss Buck, and the one time he does. delicious delicious 5+1 fic <3
home is not a place | ithilien22/@ithilien-writes | 9.7k | T
In which Eddie has a series of long overdue conversations - with Chris, with his parents, and also with Buck. eddie and chris having heartfelt conversations at the lake!! this is brilliant and captures their dynamic so well <3
howling all night | clytemnestra/@clytemnestraaa | 3.3k | E
Buck helps him pack. Of course he does. Buck’s helpful like that. Eddie leaves for Texas. this hurt in the best way possible <3 so gorgeous!
i've lost my mind | evenatraitormaymend | 9.4k | T
Buck doesn’t tell anyone about his insomnia for six months. Eddie notices anyway, but neither of them talk about it until it’s nearly six am and he wakes up to Buck climbing in his bed—not having slept since before their 24-hour shift started yesterday. Eddie gets to show Buck how much he’s loved. okay two things i LOVE are eddie taking care of buck but also buck researching and setting up routines and taking care of himself, so basically this is the perfect fic for me <3
the aftermath of liberation and love confessions | ElvenSorceress | 17.3k | T
In which Eddie comes out, sexuality is complicated but coffee is not, Buck makes an excessive salad and is also roasted, everyone has a love confession, and December is the most dramatic time of year. this was a lovely lovely morning read a few days ago!! i love me some good idiots in love <3
the missing children's parents club | notathingtoseehere | 34.5k | T
With Christopher in El Paso and Mara pulled out of custody, there's a lot of parents around the 118 that are missing their kids, and a lot of comfort that can be found with each other. not me realising as i'm putting this together that i keep reccing the same author... i had no idea but i promise they're all brilliant brilliant fics!! think i might have to check out their other works lol this must be a sign
'til my lungs give out | time_leigh | 1.1k | G
Buck wakes slowly, gently. He lays still, breathing slowly, enveloped in the soft embrace of a duvet. He is not awake enough to open his eyes and shifts, slowly turning his head deeper into his pillow, feeling the drag of the cotton, smelling home. There is an arm laced over his chest. Slowly, an ear-splitting grin grows across his face. soft and sweet and absolutely tooth-rotting fluff in the best way possible <3
transduce the mind | detectivemeer/@buick118 | 2.4k | E
Buck’s talking about how nearly a third of US gymnasts are in the southeast and how Maddie did rhythmic dance—not dance, Eddie—and he’s reaching for the remote to find their next binge when all the bad ideas Eddie’s ever successfully obliterated resurrect themselves. And Eddie figures, in a cold empty echo, that his life is already ruined. What's one more grenade launched at the rubble? this is STUNNING and so so so well-written, i loved every second of it!!
trying to be cool about it | jukoist | 6.1k | G
Buck and Eddie have always tried too hard to force themselves to like the people they're dating (to varying degrees of success). They have very different responses to realizing how easy it has been to be in love all along. this is the most brilliant most buddie premise ever and it's executed so so well and i love it!! such a good time <3
when everything's on fire | beartowns/@glowingyears | 15.4k | T
Eddie and Chris move in with Buck after a fire. Buck breaks up with his boyfriend, buys a house with Eddie, and realizes he's in love. In precisely that order. oh the buddie house hunting always hits so good <3 this is a beautiful take on that trope and it's just such a wonderful fic!!

an inch away from more than just friends
Pairing: Evan Buckley/Eddie Diaz Rating: Teen and up Word Count: 9963 Summary: “I think Eddie’s in love with me.” She gapes at him, mouth working for a response that doesn’t come until Chimney beats her to it. “Eddie’s what?” Maddie claps her mouth shut, stepping aside to let Buck through. Chimney’s on the floor in the living room with Jee playing with her tea set. “You’re not involved in this conversation,” Buck says, pointing at him. “It’s your fault in the first place for even putting the idea in my head.” Maddie apparently finally finds her voice, appearing at Buck’s side and looking between them. “I’m sorry, what? How did Chim put the idea in your head?” “Him and Hen!” Buck exclaims, waving a hand. “They told me I should pay attention to how much Eddie wants to be around me.” “And you took that to mean he’s in love with you?” Chimney asks incredulously. * In which Buck has a clipboard and a list and is about to romance the hell out of Eddie Diaz. Part 2/2 in the Eddie vs Romance series

hiiii 🥰 buddie and 🤍? - @team-118 <3
hiiii @team-118 and sorry this took FOREVER to get to, lol. have a bit of Buck and Eddie, just before their wedding.
🤍 kiss at the wedding / milestone
The closet door clicks open, and Eddie takes a deep breath and tries to compose himself so that he looks like he was doing something productive, like looking for the missing place cards or maybe the wet vac to deal with the flower vase that tipped over in the entry hall, which probably isn't his job in any case right now, but—just. Something.
"Eddie?" Buck asks, because of course it's Buck. Of course it is. Normally, Buck would be the person he'd like to see most, in pretty much any situation, but not right now. Hen, that'd be okay. Chim. Bobby. Even Maddie—Eddie's got an idea that she might know a little something about the kind of panicky jitters he's experiencing right now.
Not Buck. Not Buck, who's worked so hard to make everything perfect for today, who still sometimes looks at Eddie with big wondering eyes like he thinks this is all going to disappear. Who'll almost definitely think the worst if he catches Eddie hyperventilating in a coat closet twenty minutes before their wedding is supposed to start.
"Yeah," he says anyway, because the closet isn't that deep and he's got maybe five seconds before Buck turns the light on and sees him anyway. "I was looking for… uh. Something."
"Uh huh," Buck says. He steps into the closet, pulling the door shut behind him, enclosing them in darkness.
"We're not supposed to see each other before the ceremony starts," Eddie points out, but the darkness makes him feel a little better.
"I can't see anything," Buck says. Eddie can hear the smile in his voice, and it makes him smile automatically too, just like it always does. Buck bumps something, stumbles, swears under his breath. "Okay, but seriously, I can't see anything. Where are you?"
Eddie laughs shakily under his breath and reaches out, grasping in the darkness until his hand catches at one of Buck's elbows. "Right here."
"Oh! Hi." Buck shifts into his space, stumbles again, then finds a seat on the overturned crate against the back wall next to Eddie. He smells like fruit-flavored gum and his good cologne, and his body is warm through the faintly rough fabric of his tux. He leans into Eddie's side a little, and Eddie leans back. "So, am I allowed to ask what you're doing back here?"
Eddie groans. "If I told you I was looking for the place cards, would you believe me?"
"No," Buck says, still smiling a little by the sound. His hand finds Eddie's knee, squeezes. "But we can go with that if you want."
"I might be freaking out a little bit," Eddie admits.
"Yeah, I, uh, I kinda guessed that, Eddie."
"It's not because I'm having second thoughts," Eddie says, because that much, at least, he needs Buck to know. "I want to marry you. I can't wait to marry you."
Buck makes a little noise, soft and pleased. His cheek presses against Eddie's for a moment, and Eddie feels his body move as he takes a breath. "But?"
"But I'm afraid I'm going to fuck it up. I don't have a great track record. Or—I don't know. I walked into the garden earlier and it was…"
Beautiful, it was beautiful, the flower-decked arch and the rows of chairs and the sign with both their names on it entwined, it was beautiful, and it was perfect, and it's what Eddie wants more than anything, so it makes no sense that his throat closed up and he scurried away to hide here before anyone could come up and congratulate him.
"I called Maddie last night to freak out on her about how we should just call it all off and stay common law married forever," Buck offers, after Eddie has been silent for a moment.
Eddie laughs, startled. "You did not."
"Oh, I so did."
"Do you want to call it all off?"
"No," Buck says. He's still smiling a little, Eddie can tell. "I'm just scared I'm going to fuck it up."
Abruptly, Eddie starts laughing. He curls in on himself, heaving with it, and feels Buck shake with laughter too. In the darkness, Buck reaches for his hand; in the darkness, Eddie leans into him and feels the tension drain away.
"We could always elope," he offers, after it's finally passed.
"Yeah."
"Your parents would kill you. After what happened with Maddie and Chim's wedding? They'd kill you."
"I don't give a shit about them," Buck says. He presses his mouth to Eddie's hairline. "I'd elope with you. I'd skip our wedding to hide out in a closet with you."
"I love you," Eddie says, and it's at least the thousandth time he's said those words to Buck, but they still feel like an incredible relief; like saying them has finally given him the space he needs to breathe. "I really, really love you. You know that, right?"
"Yeah," Buck says. He kisses Eddie's forehead again. "I love you too."
"I'm being an idiot."
"Nah." Buck pauses. "Well, maybe a little. But it's okay."
"Thanks," Eddie says. He leans a little more into Buck with a deep sigh, the last of the tension easing from his shoulders. "We should probably get back out there before somebody comes looking for us."
"They can wait," Buck says. "It's not like they can start the wedding without us. We can stay here as long as you want."
"They're definitely going to think that we're having a quickie in here."
"Well…" Buck says thoughtfully. Eddie digs his fingers into his ribs, and he squirms, laughing. "Okay, okay!"
"We can save that for the reception," Eddie says, and Buck laughs harder. "Come on. Let's go."
"Okay." Buck shifts against him, straightening up. "Just one thing first."
Eddie opens his mouth to ask, but then Buck's fingers are on his jaw, a careful guide in the darkness as he leans in and kisses the question off of Eddie's lips. It lingers sweetly for a moment, and they part softly.
"Okay," Eddie says, just as soft, and kisses him again before pulling back. "Okay. Let's go get married."

Tumblr media
Episode 1: First Appearances
Eddie had never been a “bumbling idiot” when it came to women, or okay at least he hadn’t been in a long time.
“Hi there! Can you help me?”
And there goes that record.
It’s like you walked in on a cloud of sugared lavender and cotton candy and strawberries and anything else sweet he could think of. He whirled around, nearly knocking into you
“Oh shit- god no shit- no I shouldn’t say shit-“ He grabs your arms to steady you, and it’s like he’s holding an angel. You’re… soft? Yeah soft is the word he’s looking for. He’s taking way too long to talk like a normal person and he knows it. But god if that short pink dress isn’t doing things to him….
“What um- What can I help you with?” Eddie leans against the fire truck, crossing his arms over his chest, coming back down to earth. What a smooth recovery.
“Well- I’m looking for Evan Buckley. He goes by Buck?” She looks up at him, her hands clasped behind her back sweetly.
Oh.
Oh, she wanted Buck.
Eddie deflates just the tiniest bit, okay a lot but he can’t let her know that “Oh yeah sure, I think he’s upstairs, come on”
He leads the way, his hand flowing over the cool railing, trying to ground himself a little. Was it wrong he was hoping Buck fumbled this one? He wanted his best friend to find happiness- to know what that felt like…but like he could just wish that a teeny bit right?
“Hey, Buck? Someone’s here to see you” He says as he stands at the top of the stairs. You pop out from behind him, throwing your hands in the air.
“Surprise!!!” You yell, doing a little spin
“It’s me!!!”
Buck's mouth drops wide open, his fork falling from his hand as he gets up from the table so excitedly he knocks his chair back.
“Y/N?!? What are you doing here?!” He runs over, picking you up and spinning you around, you squeal, holding onto him tightly.
“Buck!! Put me down!! You’re gonna drop me!” You’re laughing, your head tilted back as he squeezes you to his chest
“Not, I’m never putting you down again” He buries his face in your neck, hugging you as tight as he can before he sets you on the floor. He holds your arms, shaking you like a ragdoll.
“It’s been years Y/N, does Maddie know you’re here???”
You push away from him a bit, steadying yourself and putting your hand on your forehead.
“Can you rein it in for like five seconds” you giggle, looking up at him “I thought it was finally time to come see you! And no Maddie doesn’t know I’m here yet, I wanted to surprise you two!
“Well, do you have a place to stay? Because you’re staying with me you can have the bed I’ll take the couch! We can have Maddie over too! Oh god I’m so glad-“
Bobby finally clears his throat, looking up from the salad in front of him.
“Uh…Buck? You wanna maybe introduce your friend before you kill her with whiplash”
“Or from crushing her sternum,” Hen says, pouring a cup of coffee
“Oh shit, yeah! This is Y/N, my cousin!” He puts his hands on her shoulders pridefully, pushing her towards them.
Eddie perks up at that, turning around and leaning against the counter… cousin? He stirs his coffee slowly
Bobby gets up and shakes her hand, patting her on the shoulder
“It’s nice to meet you! Family of Bucks is a member of ours. Welcome to the 118”
They fawn over her, really that’s the only word Eddie can come up with. Chim compliments her “adorable” dress, Hen tells her she’s working those shoes, showing off that black girl magic. She’s a bit overwhelmed by the attention, giggling through her nerves as she talks to them. A wide smile on her face.
Buck takes her hand eventually, yanking her over to Eddie
“This is my best friend,” He says proudly, patting Eddie on the back. “Eddie Diaz!”
Eddie melts when she looks up at him with those sweet eyes, he smirks, looking away for a second and biting his lip. It's subtle but Buck catches it, narrowing his eyes.
“Yeah, we’ve met,” he says, looking back at you and shaking your hand “It’s nice to properly meet you Y/N”
“It’s nice to meet you too, Eddie,” You say, a smile on your face, you bite your lip and Buck sees that too. He looks down at you, and then back up at Eddie.. and then right back down to you. His head goes up and down like a paddle ball and he whips out his phone, distractedly pushing you at Eddie.
“Ed do me a favor and keep her entertained for a minute. I need to call Maddie real quick I uh- I remembered something”
“Don’t you dare tell her I’m here! I want to surprise her” you warn him and Buck struggles, his hands gesturing wildly.
“Oh. Uhhh I’m sorry. I already texted her!” Chim interjects, shrugging awkwardly and you frown a little but shrug back “Oh okay! That’s fine”
Buck shoots Chimney a thumbs up for covering for him and immediately calls Maddie, running down the stairs for privacy.
“So um…where are you from?” Eddie asks, crossing his arms over his chest. Admittedly he does it to make his chest look better, and God does it. Hen snickers but ignores him doing that and Chim makes faces behind your back at Eddie.
“Oh, I’ve been in Minnesota for a while! It’s nice there, pretty quiet. I’m maybe looking for a place around here now though… but don’t tell Buck or Maddie I don’t wanna get their hopes up.
“Buck would probably just make you move in with him,” Bobby comments over his salad.
“Hey! We have plenty of space” Chim adds “if you’re looking for something temporary. I'm sure Maddie wouldn’t even mind permanent if we were able to discuss it”
“Eddie has a spare room. If you were here temporarily at least, that would probably be your best bet at this point” Hen chimes in, looking at him. His cheeks heat up and he chokes a little on his coffee
“I- I mean. I-“ he doesn’t even know what to say to that because god yes would he want that. Is that premature? That’s premature. Like so premature wanting to live with you……Anyway, a dog maybe? he knows exactly what old clothes he’d get rid of too to make space in his closet for you. Definitely a dog, gonna name him-
“Okay, okay slow down you guys” You laugh lightly, interrupting his internal life planning.
“I’m not moving in with anyone yet. It’s just a thought… and there’s no way in hell I’d feel comfortable imposing on Eddie like that. Family is one thing. A literal stranger? Yeah, I don’t know.”
“It’s not an imposition!” Eddie is way too quick with that answer. He clears his throat
“I- it wouldn’t be. That is if you need a place to crash. Besides I’m at work all day you know! It’s not like my place gets too much use…”
“See! Problem solved!” Hen says happily and you roll your eyes at her, scrunching your nose and making a little face at her
“Oh ha-ha, very funny. I’m not moving in with Eddie”
“You’re moving in with Eddie?!” Buck’s mouth is dropped wide open as he stands at the top of the stairs.
“What?! No!” You tell him, your hands up in defense “I’m not moving in with anyone.”
“Good,” Buck says as he picks up his chair from earlier. “Because if you’re moving in with anyone it’s gonna be me.”
“Told you” Bobby rolls his eyes.
After he finishes his pad, Thai, Buck eagerly shows you around the firehouse, dragging you and Eddie around like a kid in a candy shop. He just has so much he wants to show you, and he wants Eddie there “for backup” in case he misses anything. He proudly shows off his locker and you giggle, he’s incredibly cute sometimes. He shows off Eddie’s locker too, to which Eddie rolls his eyes and shuts the door, giving him a shove.
“Trust me when I say I saved the best for last.”He climbs up into the truck, reaching out for you. “Eddie help her?” He requests, taking your hands in his. Eddie shrugs, putting his hands firmly on your hips as you step up into the truck, he gives you a little lift and push and you’re in. Buck winks at you and you roll your eyes as Eddie climbs in behind the two of you.
“Isn’t this cool?!” He practically yells “Cool” and you’re looking around like a little owl, your eyes wide, head swiveling. It’s a lot to take in but it’s cool, he’s right.
“Uh, yeah!!!” You agree, touching everything in sight. Eddie sits on one of the seats and watches you walk around a bit, looking at everything and running your fingers over it. Buck makes you sit down in one of the seats and buckles you in.
“You look awesome!” He chuckles as he takes pictures of you for Maddie. He unbuckles his belt and gets up, looking around outside the door. Eddie gets on one knee, helping to unbuckle you. He looks up at you as you pull your arms out from the straps
“Thanks” Your voice is a little breathless, god his smile is gorgeous and he smells so damn good.
“Yeah no problem” He grins, standing up out of your way.
“Hey Y/N, you wanna pretend to drive?” Buck asks excitedly, rubbing his hands together as he turns back around.
“Oh my god, can I??? Please!!” You squeak and Eddie chuckles, shaking his head at the two of you…he can see your similarities. Buck makes Eddie get out first and smirks as Eddie grabs your hips again, it’s a little harder getting out and you stumble into his arms, squeaking.
“Hey, Don’t worry I got you” He chuckles, holding you against his chest, you look up at him as he smiles down at you.
“T-thanks uhh again, I guess' ' you mumble, your cheeks feeling like they’re practically on fire. Buck sits on the floor of the truck, swinging his feet as he just gleefully watches the interaction. Eddie sets you down properly, taking a second before he lets you go.
“Guess he’s gonna make you help me into the front seat too huh?” You ask a bit shyly
“I’m lazy as hell so yes” Buck pipes up from behind you and Eddie rolls his eyes.
“It’s fine. I don’t mind it anyway, just gives me an excuse to get closer to you” He practically purrs and even though he’s joking (he’s not) you melt on the spot, your mouth falling open quickly and snapping shut just as fast. He cracks up as he helps you up into the driver's seat. His hands feel so hot on your hips, they sear into your sides and you wish he’d keep them there. Eddie shuts the door and goes around to the other side, climbing inside.
“Alright children, go crazy” he teases you and Buck as he watches, he has to swat your hand away from so many buttons that Buck is trying to make you push. Eventually, you’re both just doing it to drive him crazy.
“Honk the horn, honk the horn!!” Buck chants from the backseat and you look over at Eddie, he shakes his head snickering as he nods
“Alright alright, God. Go ahead, Bobby will know Buck made ya do it”
You put both hands on the large horn and push down, the loud honking noise echoes through the entire station and Buck bursts out laughing. You fall back in the seat, kicking your legs laughing excitedly and it takes everything in Eddie not to just lean over and kiss you. You look so happy and gleeful as you all hear Bobby already yelling at Buck
“Scatter!!!” Buck yells and jumps from the truck, running away.
“No! No, that's not fair!” You yell after him, as Eddie jumps from the front seat too. You scramble over to the other chair and Eddie is already waiting with his arms out to you. It stalls you for a second, your heart beating out of your chest as you climb down into his arms.
“Safe and sound,” he says as he shuts the door and pulls you with him over to a little corner to hide. You can see everything from there, you’re pressed against Eddie as you both watch Bobby coming down the stairs. Buck is hiding in front of the engine, he runs around the opposite side and you’re giggling. Eddie is snorting as he covers your mouth
“Shhhh you’re gonna get us caught” he whispers and god does Eddie not want to be caught. He didn’t mean for this to happen, for your body to be pressed into his, one hand on your back pressing you into him and the other over your mouth. It’s intimate, and soon your giggles die out and you look up at him, his hand still over your mouth. You both stare into each other’s eyes…is it getting hot in here??? Did someone open the bay doors??
He slowly removes his hand and you blink at him
“Sorry” he apologizes softly, he’s just glad there’s no way you can feel the way his heart is beating out of his chest.
“It’s cool,” you say back just as quietly, feeling the same way. You bite your lip, your hands feeling the hard muscles under his tight shirt. Kinda makes you wonder if all his clothes fit him this nicely.
You’re about to say something when alarms start blaring. You jump, holding onto the front of his shirt and he pulls you in for a second
“Shit- Shit I gotta go,” he says, reluctantly letting you go. “Hopefully I’ll see you again sometime soon” He tilts your chin up, like he wants to kiss you but decides against it… he did just meet you. Instead, he kisses your forehead before running off to get his stuff on.
The truck is gone for about 10 minutes before you get a text from Buck, telling you Maddie is coming to pick you up and take you back to his place and that he’ll see you for dinner. He sends a little heart emoji at the end of the message and you smirk. Buck was ridiculous, sincere, but ridiculous.
The truck rolls back into the station a couple of hours later, It’s time to clean up and head out, their shifts are almost over finally. They work together, putting things back in their places and giving the truck a little wipe-down in a few places. Finally, Bobby dismisses them as the next shift starts coming in.
Eddie walks into the changing room, exhausted and ready to crash at home. He grabs his clothes and tosses them down, grabbing his shirt and yanking it tiredly over his head.
“So are you ... into her?” Buck asks as he walks in, getting his stuff together and standing next to Eddie to change and chat. He pulls his blue shirt over his head and looks at Eddie as he reaches for his pants
“Into who?” Eddie raises an eyebrow, pulling up his pants. He knows exactly who he’s talking about but he’s not confirming that.
“ “Into who” Yeah okay” Buck scoffs “Are you into Y/N?”
“Buck I just met her this afternoon. How could I be into her.” He lies through his teeth…and Buck sees right through him.
“Okay sure, anyway. Since you wanna play coy I’m not inviting you to dinner anymore”
“Wait, you were inviting me to dinner?” He stops buttoning his pants and looks over at Buck who’s pulling on his jeans
“Yeah I was… but since someone isn’t into someone… I’m not bothering” he buttons his pants and claps him on the back “See ya tomorrow bestie!” He goes to leave, a smirk on his face and Eddie stops him, grabbing his arm.
“I’m not….I’m not saying I’m into her. But- like-“ he sighs
“I’m hungry”
Tumblr media
Buck walks into the studio, kicking off his shoes and hanging up his coat. Maddie is sitting at the table, eating a bowl of grapes and you’re standing at the stove, stirring the pot.
“I’m telling you Mads, he is literally so cu-“
Maddie cuts you off, clearing her throat “Hey Buck! Hey… Eddie?”
Buck pushes Eddie ahead of him and over to the counter, he walks past him to the fridge and grabs a couple of drinks
“Look who’s staying for dinner,” He says in a singsong voice, tossing Eddie a bottle of water, Eddie rolls his eyes and leans against the small counter next to the stove, he gives you a wink as he opens the bottle
“Hope you don’t mind? He just invited me at the last minute” He shrugs, sipping the water. He looks over at Maddie, who is staring at Buck intensely. They’re definitely having a sibling conversation.
“No, not at all! I made more than enough!! I’m glad you could join us.” You give him a little hip bump, feeling your cheeks flush and he bumps you back. He looks up to see Maddie and Buck staring at the two of you, Buck eagerly wiggles, trying to hide his excitement, you turn around and he instantly stops, making Eddie laugh.
Dinner is good- like really good, Eddie hasn’t eaten Mexican food like that in a while, sure he could go to Catrina’s but it’s just different when it’s from home. Buck had nearly shoved Eddie into the chair next to you, as he plopped down next to Maddie
“Oh don’t mind me! Just wanna sit by my wonderful, loving, perfect, sister” he explained and Maddie facepalmed, Buck couldn’t be more obvious…but at the same time, you couldn’t be more oblivious…Buck was acting weird but he’s Buck he’s always weird.
“So I guess it’s safe to say you’ve got a little Latin flair in you hm?” Eddie asks as he takes a bite from his carnitas, even the tortillas are freshly made. You’d brought them with you from home for Maddie and Buck.
“Yup,” you smile proudly as he moans and rolls his eyes back “I’m half Mexican. And uh, I take it the food is good?”
“I’m so sorry for the absolute slut I’m about to become while eating this, yes it’s delicious” he nods his head while he’s eating and you break down laughing. Buck and Maddie are looking at each other with that certain sparkle in their eyes again while you’re shoving Eddie and he’s stealing a bite of your rice.
It’s kind of natural the way you hang all over Eddie over dinner and the way he holds onto you, maybe it’s the Hispanic in you both, very touchy. Or maybe it’s just that he’s fun to be around. Eddie learns a good deal about you, most of it incredibly embarrassing as Buck can’t help himself but tell all of your embarrassing moments as kids together. Eddie gets him back for you, telling the story about how he quite literally peed himself on a date once and you and Maddie are both scream laughing as Buck starts throwing leftover lettuce at Eddie screaming at him to shut up.
“I’m sorry you got into a lettuce war” You giggle as you walk out to Eddie’s car together, nudging each other occasionally. He’s got his hands in his pockets
“Yeah that’s Buck for you”
Buck had made you walk Eddie out to his car, claimed he absolutely had no choice but to start the dishes or he’d forget, and said Maddie had to use the bathroom and it wasn’t safe for pregnant women to hold it for so long. You’re pretty sure he made that last part up but you just shrug it off, slipping on your slides and following Eddie outside.
You stop in front of his car and you lean against it a little, dragging your finger down the hood. He clears his throat and you look up at him, he’s blushing as he runs his fingers through his hair nervously.
“Do you…wanna like to hang out? While you’re in town?”
“Yeah sure why not! You’re Buck’s best friend I’m sure he’d love to “
“No no- just. Like just us. Just me and you?” He interrupts you, as he gets in his car.
“Oh,” You feel your cheeks flush. “Like…- like a date?”
“No! No not. Okay- okay that sounds bad I said it way too fast-“ He’s stumbling over his words “Jus- just like being cool hanging out I wouldn’t…I wouldn’t ask you on a date…yet. Like we just met you know so I mean I don’t want to take things too fast for you!!”
His head falls heavily back against the headrest groaning at his awkwardness, and you’re smirking, your arms crossed over your chest. He looks over at you, his voice low as he takes a deep breath.
“Would you like to go to the zoo with me this weekend? As friends. I’d like to get to know you better.”
You smile at him, leaning into the car window and kissing him on the cheek.
“I would love to go to the zoo with you this weekend, as friends”
Eddie rolls his eyes, that blush on his cheeks deepening as he starts the car, looking at you. “Friends don’t kiss friends” He dares to say that as if he hadn’t kissed your forehead that afternoon.
“I promise you, friends kiss friends on the cheek. Trust me” You tell him a matter of factly, assuring him as you step back, giving him a little wave.
“Guess I gotta get on that trend huh?”
He smirks as he drives off. Is he speeding? Yes. But does it look cool as hell, also yes. He’s so giddy all the way home. Not only does he have a Tupperware full of some of the best food he’s eaten in a long time that you’d shoved in his hands and refused to take no for an answer when he tried to tell you he couldn’t possibly take it. But you’d also said yes to the date… okay a “friend” date but you still said yes!!
Tumblr media
The next morning he’s got a little more pep in his step, he gets through his workout faster than usual and he’s even early to work.
“You’re in a good mood” Hen comments, as she drinks her coffee, he shrugs as he finishes tucking his shirt into his pants
“I guess I am …yeah” He smiles, fixing his hair. He is in a good mood…he can’t stop thinking about you. He’d even dreamed about you… it was impossible not to think about you. It’s like he could smell your perfume as he was just standing there, whatever you wore was everything to him, he could practically bathe in it.
“Why are you standing with your hands in your hair like that?” You giggle as you walk up next to him.
Oh, so he could smell your perfume.
“I was just distracted..” He says awkwardly, turning towards you.
“What are you doing here?”
“I brought brownies! Me and Maddie are hanging out today so she brought me up here ...didn't realize I’d run into you” you say, your hands behind your back as you look around the firehouse.
“Didn’t think I’d get to see you either…” he says, mimicking your stance
He leans down, kissing you on the cheek. His lips are soft and plump and it makes you blush, his hand ghosts over your hip before he pulls you a little closer to him.
“So, I was thinking we could go to lunch after the zoo? If you wanted”
He’s so close now, looking down at you. He’s tall…and he still smells so good, like he always does. You could bottle that and just bathe in it.
“Lunch?” your voice is a bit dreamy as you feel his hand on your hip. He’d been touching you yesterday too and today felt just as good. You can practically feel his body against yours like it was the other day when you were hiding.
“Yeah, figured we could go to the zoo early…maybe spend the day together. If you’re okay with that” His voice is smooth, sort of deep. Like he’s purposely trying to overwhelm your senses.
“Y…yeah okay. Yeah, that sounds nice” you agree easily because he is overwhelming you. And you can’t help the way your lips part softly like you just need to know what his feels like. He’s got a smirk on his face as his eyes flick down to your lips, he runs his tongue over his own before he chuckles lightly.
“Alright…it’s a date. But you know, not” His voice is playful as he wiggles his eyebrows at you and you roll your eyes, finally pushing at his chest, shoving him away from you.
“Yeah, yeah whatever I’ll see you this weekend.” You can finally breathe again.
He watches you walk away, practically thirsting over that sway in your hips and the way those shorts you’re wearing hug your body so deliciously.
“Shoulda taken her to the beach…” he mumbles to himself.
“Can you not eye fuck my cousin in front of me please, I truly don’t think that’s too hard of a request.” Buck groans as he shoves a brownie in Eddie’s mouth.
“And she’s good at baking?!” Eddie moans around his bite, accepting the brownie from Bucks's hand
Buck rolls his eyes “Of course she’s good at baking. She’s good at everything”
“Eddie you better get to talking to her before I do” Hen threatens him jokingly “These are damn good”
“I know okay, I know” Eddie sighs “I’m not going to jump at her though, that’s like….desperate right? I don’t want to come off as desperate…even if I think she’s pretty. Like really pretty- stupid pretty”
“Hey, guys? You think she’s pretty?” Chim asks as he comes over to help Hen restock the engine.
“Not sure. Maybe we should ask Eddie” Hen nods as she walks away with him.
Eddie rolls his eyes, flicking them both off as he leans against the wall, rubbing his hands over his face. Buck chuckles at him, putting his hand on his arm.
“She's not gonna think you’re desperate Eddie… Y/N isn’t like that. And I think she’s into you too. Just be yourself, man, You’re a good guy Eddie, and a total catch. I love Y/N with all of my heart but if she can’t see that? She’s a total loser. And you know two sides of the same coin if you can’t see she’s the greatest woman in the entire world you’re the loser” He snickers as he elbows Eddie in the ribs. Eddie chuckles and sighs nudging Buck back.
“Thank you for restoring my confidence…I needed that. You’re the greatest friend in the world man, honestly”
Bobby makes a gagging sound as he walks by “And you’re the greatest crew in the world” He says in a high-pitched voice, fluttering his eyelashes.
“Hey! We’re having a moment” Buck says, throwing his napkin at Bobby.

For the first time, Buck longs for a bullet wound to treat. Dirt to dig at. A door to break through. Something. There’s nothing. “Your guess was correct, Diaz,” the bomb technician tells them, as he gestures to the orange circle. “You’re standing on a large sensor plate, wired to a detonator. It’s incredibly important that you don’t move. Don’t shift. When you put your weight down, it was like cocking a gun - you take your weight off, this thing is powerful enough to take the entire house with it." Inspired by Castle, S05E22: Still

“Yeah,” Eddie says, and the darkness behind his eyelids takes on a white edge. “Be good. Nice to be married,” he yanks on Buck’s t-shirt, “best friend.” Finally, Buck takes a breath that sounds off somehow, but he laughs too, and that sounds normal, Eddie thinks. A normal laugh. “Sure, Eds,” he says, and there’s his hand in Eddie’s hair again, a puff of breath on the crown of Eddie’s head like Buck leaned in to press a kiss there and then stopped, but why would he stop—“I’ll marry you if you remind me tomorrow.” or the one in which joking about being married to your best friend is all fun and games, right up until you realize that you're not laughing.

“I think Eddie’s in love with me.” She gapes at him, mouth working for a response that doesn’t come until Chimney beats her to it.

I can see it in your eyes (do you mean it?) by smilingbuckley
(29,353 words | Explicit | Chapters: 6/6)
Eddie hears that his cousin is getting engaged. Not wanting to get set up by multiple family members on awkward dates so he can bring someone to the wedding, he and Buck plan to fake date. They put a lot of thought into it, getting comfortable with PDA, going on fake dates, even practicing kissing once... and then it's finally time to travel to El Paso. But faking it is hard when he's not really faking it at all. -- He fully blames his rom-com brain, having just watched The Proposal – the fake dating classic, if you ask him or Chimney. “What if I’m your fake date?” Eddie’s head snaps sideways so fast, Buck worries about whiplash. “What?” Buck shrugs, trying to play it cool, but really, his heart is beating loudly in his chest. “I mean, people sometimes already think we’re a couple. We’re very comfortable around each other, so sharing a bed or holding hands wouldn’t be too bad. That way your family could back off. And, I don’t know, maybe a few weeks after, you say we decided to just be friends and leave it at that. Or you don’t and they’ll back off full-time with the dates.” Eddie stares at him, “You’d do that for me?” “Sure,” Buck answers, like it’s no big deal.
you could call me babe for christmas ('tis the damn season) by prettyboybuckley
(30,268 words | Teen And Up Audiences | Chapters: 2/2)
"You could come with me," Buck blurts out, his own eyes going wide as he processes what he just said. Eddie looks at him with his mouth hanging open, eyebrows slowly creasing into a frown and Buck's mind grapples for an explanation, even if the reason he said it is quite simple: he always feels safer with Eddie by his side. "My parents want me to come to El Paso," Eddie says, and he looks like the words taste bitter in his mouth. "I'd love to get out of that, but I can't just leave Christopher with Abuela or Pepa while I run to Pennsylvania. Never mind that my parents would never accept it without a good reason." "Christopher can come, of course." OR: Buck and Eddie pretend to be dating as Buck takes the Diaz boys along to Hershey. Once there, things get a little out of hand, and Buck comes to a realization...

(15,884 words | Teen And Up Audiences | Chapters: 6/6)
“Sure, I love the zoo.” Chris is saying with that perfectly adorable giggle that makes Eddie want to melt whenever he hears it—which is far too infrequently these days. “My dad takes me there all the time.” Eddie’s head snaps up at that, quick and sharp. His fingers go numb and he scrambles uselessly with the tongs as they fall with a loud clatter against the grill. Because Eddie can count the times he’s been to the zoo on one hand. It’s Buck who’s been taking Christopher there nearly once a week for years.

(15,010 words | Teen And Up Audiences | Chapters: 1/1)
“I want another tattoo.” Eddie shatters the silence delicately, careful not to disturb the peace that cocoons them. Pressing his hand further on Eddie’s shoulder, because he knows Eddie like no one has ever known him before, like no one will ever know him again, Buck asks, “Here?” Eddie nods, tightening his fingers around Buck’s forearm. “It’s kind of…” Eddie pauses to find the perfect words, until he realizes he doesn’t need them. “It’s kind of for you. And for me. For us. You could… I’d like you to get it too.” The corners of Buck’s lips curl in a soft smile as his fingers curl around Eddie’s shoulder. “I’d like to get it too.” (or, Buck and Eddie keep getting matching tattoos, and then discover that maybe everyone is right when they think it means something more.)

Hen asks, coming over from the kitchen with a bowl of trail mix. "I'm trying to get Eddie to come pick up guys with me," Buck says. Hen's eyebrows arch high above her glasses. "Really," Hen says. "It's more of a wingman situation," Eddie tries to explain. "Yeah, Eddie picks the guys so I don't make stupid decisions," Buck says, flicking through menus to pick a new racetrack. The combination of Hen munching peanuts and looking back and forth between them makes Eddie feel like he's a zoo exhibit. Best Friends, captured in the wild, still feral, exhibiting behaviors heretofore unknown to science. "Well, good luck with - all that," Hen says pointedly to Eddie. 911/omgcp crossover🏒 🏒 🏒 (for @herrmannhalsteadproduction, because I mentioned it and then I wanted to share some of it)
Will knocks on the office door. “Captain Nash?”
The man at the desk looks up at him and smiles. “You must be William. Come on in,” he gestures to the empty chair across from him. “Let’s get the paperwork finalized and then we’ll give you a tour of the place.”
Will flips through the paperwork, adding his signature in the appropriate places and putting aside the copies he’ll need to keep. He pauses on the one labeled “Food preferences and allergies”.
“Um, I understand why you’d want a copy of allergies, but why food preferences?” Will asks.
Captain Nash smiles. “We do a lot of family dinners here. I’d hate to make something you couldn’t eat.”
“Oh, uh,” Will can feel his ears getting hot. “Well that’s - that’s kind. Um,” he clears he throat a little bit before continuing. “I actually cooked a lot for my team in college, if you ever need some help.”
Captain Nash’s smile gets bigger. “We’ve got everything covered for this shift, but I’ll definitely get you started next shift. It’ll be nice to have some extra hands around.”
“I also bake,” Will says before he can stop himself.
Nash laughs. “We are lacking in the baking department. You might get put on permanent duty.”
They sit in a comfortable silence while Will finishes the paperwork, double checking the two piles and storing his copies safely in his duffle bag.
“Let’s get you set up with a locker and introduce you to the rest of the team,” Nash says, clapping him on the shoulder as he guides him out of the office.
“Sounds good Captain Nash.”
He laughs again. “Please, just call me Bobby. We’re not that formal here.”
”Pretty much everyone calls me Dex,” Will offers.
Bobby’s eyes crinkle. “Buck’ll be disappointed you came with a ready-made nickname.”
”Sorry…?” Dex replies.
“It will save a whole shift of possibilities. You’ll be glad.” He points to the cubbies they’ve stopped in front of. “Here, your gear will be in the last one in the row. We don’t have a new nameplate yet, but the team knows it’s yours. Locker room is just through here, you can grab any of the empty ones.”
— — —
“So, how was the first shift?” Derek asks as soon as he walks into the house.
“Long, busy, but good. The team is really nice, they’d remind you a bit of our team.” Will flops down onto the couch and accepts the coffee Derek hands him.
“Loud and codependent?”
Will snorts. “Surprisingly accurate. Chim’s even married to Buck’s sister so some literal family connections there.”
“Chim?” Derek raised an eyebrow at him.
“Chimney not his real name, and no, I don’t know why they call him that — yet.”
“That’s gotta be a good story, let me know when you find out.” Derek sits down next to Will with his own coffee and a plate with two pastries on it. “I went on an adventure while you were at work, try these out.”

“damn it, oliver! you called the cops?” the woman yells when she sees the red and blue lights and blaring sirens.
“audrey, there is a fire if you didn’t notice! i called the fire department!” he argues back, then turning to the 118. “my wife was just burning all of our belongings together, and the fireplace just started sparking.”
“ex-wife.” audrey grumbles.
“ok, ma’am. we need to get in there, so why don’t you, sir, come get checked out.” bobby says, leading the husband to henrietta. “we heard there were some difficulties getting in so buck, y/l/n, go see if you can get those doors open and start hitting this thing from the middle.”
“on it, cap.” buck says and the two follow the wife back into the house.
“alright so, i created this whole system to keep this house in line and it’s all programmed a certain way,” she informs the firefighters beside her. she continues to ramble on about how long it took her and how she formed it all.
“ok, well why don’t we open it?” y/n asks, politely but with a little force as well. the woman places her hand on the buzzer of the door, and it buzzes a bright red color. “huh, that’s weird. i’ll try it again.” the second time she places her finger on it, the same thing happens but another warning comes up talking about the attempts left. she pulls her hand back and observes her thumb.
“looks like you blistered it trying to burn all that stuff, it probably won’t work even if you do it a few times.” buck says to her, giving her something to wrap around her blistered thumb.
“well, here, i’ll just try it again.” buck and y/n exchange a look of confusion and doubt that it’ll work, but they wait around for her to try and get the fire revealed to them. “ugh! shit!” they all turn around and look at the door of the garage sliding down into the locked mode.
“no, no!” y/n runs over and hits on the door, realizing she was too late to try and prevent it from closing. “well, that didn’t work. do you happen to have another way to get in?”
“i have a code,” they sigh out of relief because they can already feel the intense heat filling up the garage. “but it’s getting fixed right now. of course, i mean perfect timing for my house to burn down.”
“hey, your house will be ok, we just have to try and figure out how to get through this door.” buck reassures audrey, even though he also isn’t sure how to make it out of here. “when will the system reset?”
she mumbles quietly, looking down at her shoes and taking off her sweater. “maybe a few hours, at least.” buck groans out and looks over to y/n who has a face filled with disbelief. she pulls out her radio and speaks into it.
“cap, it might be a while before we get into the actual house. looks like we’re stuck in here.”
“we gotta get you guys out of there quickly, it is way too hot to be in there for too long.” bobby says, light panic fading through his voice.
“chim! eddie! go grab the jaws and try to pry this door open before our friends get cooked alive. get at the weakest parts of the door and try to break this code.”
————————————————————————
after what felt like days inside that garage, the temperature rises to 110°. they were practically baking inside, with thick beads of sweat falling down their faces. with no water or air, they were already dehydrated and could suffocate in this garage if they could not open it.
the clatter from outside becomes distant as the heat begins to get heavier on their bodies. they are already on the cool cement floor of the room, but even with that, their clothes are soaked. audrey sits over in one of the corners and y/n and buck sit in the other.
“if we ever get married, don’t burn our stuff.” buck says.
“you think i’d burn your stuff?”
“well you never know, that guy clearly didn’t see it coming.”
“we’re firefighters, buck. i think we’d know better.” she smiles at him through the feeling of the sun touching the earth's crust. “at least we’re in here together though.”
buck blushes like he has a middle school crush on her, even though they’ve been dating for a while. “me too, just wish it wasn’t as hot as the devil's ass in here.”
“i wish i had the keys, maybe crank the AC of the car,” audrey says from the corner, eyeing her car.
“AC sounds heavenly, but we won’t have AC again if we get carbon monoxide poisoning from the engine.” y/n tells her, leaning back. it seems like every option they have just get shut down immediately, placing them in more danger.
“buck, y/n/n, how’s it going in there?” bobby’s voice comes in through the radio again.
“pretty good for being in an oven, but uh, get us out please.” buck says. “temps hit 115°”
————————————————————————
heavy breaths and panting have become the only noise in the room. the heat was becoming unbearable, and faith was shrinking as the fire grew. the bangs and hits from outside became almost irrelevant to the heating thoughts in their thumping heads.
“this was not on my bingo card for this year.” buck tries joking around, but neither feels like it anymore.
“save your oxygen, honey.”
“just tell me to shut up, y/n.”
“alright, shut up buck.” she forces out a little smile while slumped against the wall. audrey was their concern, but she seemed to be in the same condition and there was nothing they could do. “i’m getting tired, that’s bad, huh?”
“hey, no, you have to stay awake. we have to get out of here, everyone’s working on it, right?”
“there’s no way they gave up.”
after a few more minutes, feeling like lightyears, they hear several loud hits to the weakest parts of the door. they see something wedge the door, but it’s almost like the heat and stress of the room have closed out their senses to get up and check. with several buttons of their tops undone to try and cope with the heat, they stay still in their spots, losing more and more energy.
the door busts up, and the garage door is thrown up, dents on the outside from the smashing and banging. the vision of the couple fades as they see eddie and chimney walking toward them, helping them both stand up and carry them out. two more paramedics help audrey, removing her from the garage and placing her in an excellent ambulance.
everyone from 118 and even the cops on the scene watch with amazement as the pair comes out in almost full gear, decked with sweat and taking short, slow breaths.
“severe dehydration and heat exhaustion, get them in the ambulance and crank the air conditioning. get them fluids and oxygen masks now!” chimney leads people to each other and y/n and buck sit in their own ambulances.
the relief in their bodies takes a few minutes, but eventually, the moisture evaporates and their heads clear out of the smokey heat. y/n, placed with hen in the truck, asks, “is buck ok? he was really hot, hen. he was so hot in that garage and audrey! is she doing ok, she didn’t look too bad in there, she had fewer layers but still-“
“they’re all okay, y/n. you did well in there. that’s a pretty badass story, too, stuck in an oven basically.” y/n looks out the doors to the ambulance and sees the contained fire, no longer roaring at the garage doors and the ceiling.
“can i see ev?” was her last question. and work from eddie is the same thing happened in his aid car.
“audrey’s good right?” buck asks eddie, pulling the mask away from his mouth.
“she’s fine buck, just relax.”
“where’s y/n? she was sweating a lot in there, barely heard me in there, is she alright?”
being able to stand up strong enough, y/n sneaks her way over to buck. she steps up into the ambulance. “sup, eddie.”
“sup, lava girl.” he teases. “i’ll leave you guys, keep that mask on, buck, or i swear to god-“
“bye eddie!” buck waves to him, smiling and putting the mask back around his mouth.
“pretty bad day, huh?”
“no, not at all.” buck says, surprising y/n. “you were in there with me.”
y/n lets out a cheeky grin at buck and sits closer to him. “you know i love you right?”
“of course, i know that, we just got cooked like hot dogs in there together,” she laughs and he looks into her shining eyes and red face. “and i love you, and i really hope you know that.”
“oh i know,” she says, leaning in to land a light kiss on his lips. he leans more into the kiss as it transforms into a far more passionate one than intended.
“hey!” hen yells from outside. “i left you alone for one minute and you’re already making out where i did not leave you!”
“i’d say sorry but…”
“save it, does eddie know you’re in here too?”
“yeah? he was here when i came in.”
“oh, ok then. diaz!” hen yells and walks away.
“someone’s in trouble with mama hen.” buck jokes and he brings her in for another kiss. “i heard someone say i was pretty hot in there, you didn’t have to flatter me like that.”
y/n slaps his shoulder and chuckles at his sly comments about himself. “i guess you did look pretty hot, but not as hot as that garage, baby.” she caresses the side of his face.
“oh i know somewhere else that gets hotte-“
“buck!” eddie’s voice echoes through the street, looking at buck with his hands thrown in the air. “really? what did i tell you? mask!”
buck shakes his head and then eddie points at y/n. “and you! you made me get in trouble with hen.” he starts walking toward the two of them.
“ok, maybe i should leave for my own ambulance.” she pecks his lips again and skips out of his truck.
“dirty fools, you two.” buck shakes his head and eddie smirks at the two, admiring the relationship they have together.

“Of course you can stay. It’s… I mean, always. Whenever.”
“As long as it doesn’t put you out,” Buck says. He doesn’t want Chris falling behind in school because he and Eddie are bumbling their way through this fantasy future.
“Maybe someone can drive me to get my computer tomorrow, and then I can do some work,” Chris shrugs. “But I think you’re gonna need me…”
He looks at Nico nervously.
“Need you for?” Buck asks.
“Family dinner tomorrow,” Chris says. “I was gonna sit this one out because of school, but… I mean, it’s your turn to host.”
“Family dinner,” Eddie repeats neutrally. But Buck can see the terror in his eyes.
“With Grandpa!” Nico cheers, hardly noticing his fathers’ confusion.
Buck and Eddie look at each other, panicked. Grandpa? For fuck’s sake. Which of their fathers is in town? That is the last thing Buck wants to deal with right now.
“Uh huh,” Chris confirms. “Grandpa Bobby.”
Buck’s jaw drops.
“Yeah, okay,” Eddie says. “We’re going to need your help.”
🌤️
Eventually, they put on an old Christmas movie for Nico in the living room, while Buck scours the fridge and cupboards to see what he could possibly make to host a dinner tomorrow. He has no idea what he would have been planning. He’ll have to improvise.
“How many people are coming to this thing?” Eddie asks Chris as Buck searches for inspiration.
“Uh, nine?” Chris says. “I think. Not including the four of us.”
“Thirteen people?” Eddie gapes.
“Yeah, that’s pretty normal,” Chris says. “Although, I guess you don’t know that.”
“No!” Eddie agrees. “No, I do not.”
“Now that almost all of you have left the 118-”
“WHAT?” Buck demands, turning so hard to look at Chris he bumps his head on the open fridge door.
Chris winces. “Yeah, sorry. Just two of you still there.”
“Who?” Eddie asks.
“You and Hen,” Chris says.
“Where am I?” Buck asks. “Where are Chim and Bobby?”

Here he is, brain spinning about all the things that could go wrong to a baby who is, at this point, more idea than reality. Meanwhile, Bobby has lost children he loved for years. Who should be adults now.
“I’m sorry,” Buck says.
“For what?” Bobby asks.
Buck shrugs. “I’ll probably have a bunch of stupid little panics about things… And here you are… You’ve actually been through it.”
Bobby frowns. “And yet, I still worry about you, May, and Harry all the time. As I’m sure I will worry about… Wait, do you have a name yet?”
Well, not exactly.
“Uh, we had a boy’s name locked down before we met Lourdes,” Buck says. He’s not going to say what that is. “We have a few options for a girl… But we can’t really pick. We’re going to wait to meet her.”
Currently, Buck is leaning towards Josie. After Pepa - Josephina; who brought them together.
Bobby nods. “Makes sense. She can tell you.”
Buck smiles, a little nervously.
“That’s the hope.”
☆☆☆
By the 21st, Eddie is also feeling a little antsy, waiting for the baby. He won’t tell Buck though. Because if he does, then Buck will only get more anxious. It’s up to Eddie to mitigate that anxiety. Marital duty or whatever. But he won’t say the whole thing doesn’t have his brain moving sort of constantly.
So constantly, in fact, that he does blurt something out over breakfast. Just not something Buck - or even Eddie, to be honest - is expecting.
“I want to take a longer leave,” Eddie says suddenly.
Buck, midway through swallowing a sip of smoothie, pauses.
“Sorry, that came out of nowhere,” Eddie says.
Buck finishes his sip, then shakes his head.
“No, no that’s okay,” he says. “I just thought we had it all sorted?” And they did. They do. They each get eight paid weeks of the leave. The plan was to do the first two weeks together, then to each do six separately. That would give fourteen weeks. Then she’d go to the LAFD childcare center while they worked, or Carla - and sometimes Maddie, who offered - would pick her up when possible. And that’s alright with Eddie. It’s fine. He just… He’d like to do more. Stay with her longer. He knows Buck does, too. They’d both love a proper parental leave like they might get in another country. But they don’t live in another country, they live here.

“I’m sorry,” Eddie says, wobbling a little in the water. “I’m really sorry I reacted that way. This is just… This is just not what I was expecting.”
“Well, what were you expecting?” Buck demands.
Eddie’s expression is sort of helpless. Maybe Buck should cut him a break. Who would naturally guess mermaid if they weren’t one? It’s just… Buck really believed him when he said they were the same.
Eddie steps back a little bit. “Uh, that you and I would be… The same?”
Yeah. That’s what Buck is saying, too.
“What does that mean, uh, for you?” Buck asks. Because now he’s genuinely curious.
“Uh…” Eddie goes a little pale. He takes another step back. “I-I… It doesn’t matter. You’re not… So it doesn’t matter.”
“Oh, come on!” Buck blurts, exasperated. He feels his tail squirm without his permission. His skin kind of itches up his back and abdomen. “You could get me shipped off to SeaWorld and you won’t even tell me your deal? What could be scarier than this?”
Eddie’s face sort of crumples.
Buck is alarmed. “Eddie? Hey, come on… Are you… I mean, are you in trouble?”
“I don’t tell people,” Eddie says. “It’s not… It’s not safe to… It never ends well.”
Damn. He looks like he’s genuinely going to be sick.
“You were going to tell me,” Buck reminds him, gently. “Or, you thought you did. Am I less trustworthy now?”
Eddie considers this. “No. I guess you’re not.”
“I guess you don’t have to tell me,” Buck says. “But, you know, it’d be nice if you did… Since you kind of… Know this about me. And I’ve literally never told anyone.”
Eddie takes a deep breath.

Since you watch lone star too, you saw the whole kidnapping thing in ls 4x04. If 911 did something like that, how would it play out? Who would even get kidnapped? I mean, it's different that being held hostage like in ls 2x08 (in the empty restaurant) or 911 5x06 (in the ambulance itself).
4x04 is one of my favorite episodes and my most rewatched one! I just think Rafael is an incredible actor, and should lone star get cancelled I would fully support him moving to LA and Carlos teaming up with Athena to fight crime (TK can come too).
But getting to your actual question, my buck loving heart would love to see him be the one in peril. He suspects something after a call in a mostly abandoned neighborhood and goes back after work just to have a look around. Bobby’s gone back to a scene before, and that’s why buck feels like he could do it too.
Cue the drama. Cue the kidnapping.
He was supposed to meet tommy after work and he told him he’d be a little late but didn’t say he wasn’t coming at all so now tommy is worried. They’re not at the phase of having each other on find my friend or anything like that, and buck’s not answering so he calls maddie. She hasn’t heard from him but he doesn’t want to worry her so he ends up saying “oh, just got a text! traffic, of course!”
He picks up eddie, then he calls bobby, who tells athena, and the four of them go on the search of a lifetime looking for buck. They call Josh at dispatch and have him ping buck’s phone (and tell him to NOT tell maddie!!!). he does what he can, gets a last known location, but not an exact.
Maddie’s suspicious of course. she talks to chim who talks to hen who calls bobby and when bobby fills her in she tells him about the call at that creepy subdivision that buck wouldn’t stop talking about afterward.
All this while buck is going through it with the kidnappers.
Tommy is on edge. He’s snappy and scared and cuts through every piece of red tape that stands in Athena’s way. Doesn’t care if he can’t legally enter a house, Athena will have to arrest him to stop him. Goes into full interrogation mode with people who may have seen something. Bobby has to hold tommy back once, but eddie just takes over for him.
Athena, Bobby, Eddie, and Tommy find Buck just in time. At the hospital, bobby tells buck the way tommy reacted- that could only be love. The deepest, craziest, most heartfelt love. Bobby knows buck loves tommy too. He should tell him that. Life’s too short not to. The episode ends with tommy coming into the room. Bobby walks out but looks back at them through the observation window as tommy runs his fingers through bucks hair and gives him a kiss on the temple. We don’t hear the I love you’s, but we see buck say something that can only be “I love you” by the way tommy looks at him, then tommy smiles and we see him say it back. They kiss gently as tommy holds onto buck like he’s made of the most precious gold.
The end.
(Sorry wtf did this turn into my bad yall am I gonna have to write this now??)

As you walk into Bobby and Athena's house, the laughter and chatter fill the air. It's a lively party, with children running around and adults catching up with one another. Buck takes your hand, leading you through the crowd, as you greet familiar faces and exchange warm smiles.
You settle down outside, letting the sun kiss your face, enjoying the summer day as Maddie and Chimney made their way, sending hugs here and there. Maddie's eyes are sparkling with excitement, and she can barely contain her joy. Buck kissed the top of your head, joining Bobby and Eddie as the girls gathered around you.
“Someone’s in a good mood.” you teased Maddie, as her cheeks turned red. “Where’s my favourite niece?”
“Oh, she’s over there with Howie.” Maddie pointed to where the boys were standing, making a circle around Jee-Yun as she ran between their legs, handing herself onto Buck’s.
You heard congratulation words coming from the boys, some patting Chim on his shoulder, some giving him hugs. Buck just stood there with a funny repulsion written over his face and everyone laughed at his words, making you frown even more.
“So girl, you’re gonna tell us why you’re so cheerful about or we should share our guesses?” Athena’s gaze shifted from Maddie to where the boys were, lightly chuckling when your boyfriend made his way to you.
“Well, me and Howie—“
“It’s so disgusting hearing people telling around they’re trying for a baby. Like yeah, congratulations, you’re having sex, but just don’t make a big deal out of it!” Buck was babbling around, interrupting his sister, and you just couldn’t hold your laugh at him scrunching his face in dislike.
“What’s the matter with you?” you caressed his hand when he landed on your chair handle.
“It’s annoying hearing Chimney talk about trying for another baby. I don’t want to picture my sister and Chimney having sex! Now I can’t get that image out of my mind!” Buck’s words made the girls laugh and after the realisation hit, all of you gave Maddie questioning looks.
“Yeah, thank you Evan for making the announcement!” Mads frowned at Buck, innocence playing on his eyes as he raised his arms in defence. “Me and Howie are trying for baby number two!” she announces, her voice filled with excitement.
The back yard erupts with laughter and cheers, and you find yourself clapping and smiling along with everyone else. But as the cheers die down, a thought creeps into your mind, and you glance over at Buck, who seems lost in his own thoughts.
Maddie notices your quiet demeanor and turns to you and Buck, her eyes filled with curiosity. "What about you two?" she asks, her voice filled with interest. "Waiting for baby Buckley to play around here some day."
Buck's gaze shifts from Maddie to you, and you catch a flicker of longing in his eyes. It's a question that has been hovering unspoken between the two of you for a while. Your heart skips at the thought of having Buck’s child.
You take a deep breath, suddenly feeling vulnerable yet hopeful. "Maybe some day." you say softly, intertwining your fingers with Buck's.
As the conversation continues around you, your mind starts to race with possibilities. You think about the future, about the joy and challenges that come with parenthood. The thought of sharing that journey with Buck fills you with a sense of love and anticipation.
Buck's attention turned to Christopher, who was playing around with Danny, his contagious laughter filling the air. A mischievous grin formed on Buck's face, and he couldn't resist joining in on the fun. They played tag, engaged in an imaginary battle against imaginary villains, and Buck even gave Christopher a piggyback ride, both of them bursting into fits of giggles.
While watching Buck and Christopher, Eddie joins you on the couch, with a warm smile playing on his face. He leaned in slightly, his voice softening. "You know, you and Buck would make incredible parents," Eddie remarked, his words laced with sincerity. "I've seen how you both care for Christopher and the rest of the team. You have so much love to give."
His words touch your soul, and you nod gratefully. "Thank you, Eddie. It means a lot to hear that from you."
“What are best friends for?” he noticed your lost expression, embracing you with warmth and a kind of love only Eddie was able to bring into your life. It was a big brother’s love, one saying he cares about you a lot and his heart aches whenever your smile is missing from your beautiful face.
His words resonated with you, reinforcing the thoughts that had been swirling in your mind since the conversation had begun. The idea of starting a family with Buck had always been a distant notion, but now it felt tangible, within reach. The mere thought of sharing such a profound connection with him filled you with excitement and warmth.
As the day drew to a close and the sun dipped below the horizon, you found yourself nestled in Buck's embrace, watching the stars emerge one by one. The gentle breeze carried with it a sense of serenity, and it seemed as if the universe was aligning to grant your unspoken desires.
Buck’s apartment is filled with a warm and inviting atmosphere that always seems to surround him; a mix of modern furniture and personal touches, reflecting Buck's adventurous spirit. The walls are adorned with photographs capturing his countless adventures and the sweetest memories the two of you share.
As you settle on the cozy couch, a sense of comfort washes over you, amplified by Buck's presence. You were tired, all you wanted to do was to lay in his arms, the calming movement of his chest raising and slowly making its way down with every breath drifting you off to sleep. But something feels different in the air and your tiredness is not it.
Buck glances at you with a mischievous smile, his hazel eyes sparkling with a hint of excitement. You notice his playful demeanor, sensing there's something he's been pondering.
"You know," Buck begins, his voice gentle yet filled with anticipation, "I've been thinking a lot lately."
“Oh, you thinking? That can’t be good!” you teased, trying so hard to keep the laughter from coming out of your mouth as his fingers made their way up and down your body in Buck’s attempt of tickling you.
“Now, seriously.” he cleared his throat and his blue eyes scanned your face. Tears forming in your eyes from all the laughter, a beautiful smile reached your eyes that you couldn’t keep under control and cheeks painted with the same pink as your lips. “Everyone around us have families, babies. We’re the only one left.”
His words hang in the air, leaving you momentarily speechless, but as you observe Buck's hopeful gaze, you realize he's being completely serious.
As a rush of emotions flood over you, you search within yourself to find your own truth. Thoughts of Buck as a father flicker through your mind, and you can't help but smile. He has always been compassionate, caring, and fiercely protective of those he loves. His determination to make the world a better place for others is a testament to the kind of father he could be.
Buck notices your smile and takes it as a positive sign. His enthusiasm grows, and he continues, "I know it's a big decision, and we'll have to figure out the logistics, but I can't imagine a better person to be the mother of my kids."
His words stir a sense of warmth in your heart, and you find yourself imagining a future where you and Buck navigate parenthood together, supporting each other through the ups and downs.
“I-uh… I’ve been thinking about it lately.” you confessed, playing with his hair as his head rested on your lap. “But the more I think about it, the more I realize how lucky any child would be to have you as a father."
A mix of relief and joy washes over Buck's face, his eyes gleaming with gratitude. He reaches out, gently taking your hand in his, and squeezes it softly. In that moment, you both understand that whatever path you choose, you'll face it together, as you've always done.
He suddenly stands up on his knees, dragging you down on the couch, hands framing your face. You laugh in surprise, wrapping your arms around his neck, holding into him as his lips pursued together down from you nose, to your cheek and making their way to your neck.
“We better get to work then!”

Text
I started thinking about Buck texting Bobby every time he woke up, and my hand slipped.
---
Bobby is just beginning to prep breakfast at the station when his phone pings.
7:26am hey everything ok
It doesn't click right away—Bobby’s first assumption being that Buck is missing the job, maybe feeling a little left out.
7:27am Yeah, everything’s fine here. Shift just started, you’re not missing much. Are you ok?
He watches as the three dots pop up and then disappear a couple times, and then puts his phone down to stir the eggs. He’s almost forgotten about it by the time the response comes in.
7:34am just checking
It’s then that the penny drops, and the realization breaks Bobby’s heart a little. He opens his camera and flips it around, taking a surreptitious selfie with A shift seated at the table in the background. Chim is gesturing animatedly, and Eddie is chuckling into a coffee mug while Hen rolls her eyes. In the foreground is half of Bobby’s own face, forgetting to smile as he concentrates on framing the shot.
He sends the picture off to Buck.
7:36am We’re all here, all safe. We miss you. thanks bobby. miss you guys too
The next one comes in the following morning, just as Bobby is pulling into his driveway.
7:31am hey Hey, kid. All good here. ok, great sorry thanks No need, Buck.
Bobby knows there’s something Buck isn’t telling him about the coma dream and his place in it. When Bobby had asked him about it at the hospital, he’d been cagey, and since Buck got home, Bobby feels like he’s being tracked—like if Buck doesn’t know where Bobby is at any given moment, Bobby might vanish into thin air… or Buck might.
Bobby can be an anchor. He’s had practice.
2:12pm all good? All good.
They fall into a routine, where Buck will text “hey” whenever he wakes up and Bobby will reply with a checkmark emoji. It’s soothing for Bobby, too—this way, he knows Buck is sleeping, and gets a rough idea of when and how much. There’s always a text in the morning, and more often than not, a message also comes through in the afternoon.
A couple days in, the afternoon text arrives while the 118 is on a call. Nothing serious, but several cars are involved, and Bobby is flitting around the scene, directing his people back and forth to where they’re needed. By the time he wraps up, Eddie is sitting half inside the truck and holding his phone, a concerned look on his face.
“Cap?”
Bobby pulls his own phone out of his turnouts.
3:42pm hey
3:48pm hey, bobby?
3:52pm i know it’s fine and i know you’re probably on a call but lmk if you’re ok when you can
3:54pm please sorry
Bobby takes a quick selfie with Eddie. Neither of them is smiling, but it’s not annoyance—it’s the same way they’d be looking at Buck if he were here, handling the call with them. No performing, just an ordinary moment in time.
He sends it over.
4:09pm Sorry to make you wait. We’re good.
He looks up from his phone, and Eddie is watching him with pinched eyebrows. Wordlessly, he flips his phone around to show Bobby his own string of texts from Buck. Bobby sees his own name in the thread several times.
“How’s he doing?” Bobby asks.
Eddie blows out a breath and settles his elbows on his knees. “He’s… working through some stuff,” Eddie says, looking back at the text thread. He’s silent for a long moment, and then huffs a rueful laugh. “He seems rattled, which is pretty understandable. But beyond that, I don’t think he knows what he needs yet.”
“Well, until he tells us differently, the best thing we can do for him is to be here, and be us.”
Eddie nods, and they both swing into the engine.
That night, the ping of Bobby’s phone wakes him from a deep sleep in the station house bunks.
2:20am hey you awake
Bobby rubs a hand across his face. I am now. You ok? sorry i woke you No, don’t be. I’d rather you reach out.
Buck doesn’t respond; the three dots don’t even appear.
2:22am Did something happen? You alright?
2:24am just a nightmare You want to tell me about it? nah maybe later glad you’re ok, get some sleep
Bobby locks his phone and stares at the ceiling in the dark. He isn’t sure how much time passes, but at some point he resigns himself to the fact that his swirling worries won’t resolve themselves into anything legible right now. He swings his legs out of bed and heads upstairs to the kitchen.
Five hours later, he pulls into a parking spot outside of Buck’s apartment complex, a pan of cinnamon rolls in the passenger seat.
“Hey, Bobby.” Buck looks tired when he swings open the door, circles under his eyes, smile a little faded.
“Hey, kid. Brought you something.” Bobby peels back a corner of the foil covering the cinnamon rolls, and watches as Buck’s eyes brighten.
He laughs and gestures to the piles of food on the kitchen island. “I don’t know if I’ve even got space for those, but I’ll move some of this out to the balcony if I have to.”
Bobby hands the pan over, and Buck lifts out a roll immediately, taking a huge bite that leaves icing on his lip. “Mmmmh. God. Thank you.”
He can’t help a smile at Buck’s enthusiasm. “Anytime.”
There’s a moment of quiet while Buck wedges the pan onto the overloaded island and finishes his roll. He’s licking his fingers and avoiding Bobby’s eyes when he says, “Sorry again for waking you up.”
“Buck.” Bobby waits for him to look up. “Don’t be. We’re all here for you—and not just because you got hurt. We’re here whenever you need us.”
Buck pauses, index finger still in his mouth. He pulls it out and says in a rush, as if racing his own hesitation: “You were dead. In my coma dream, you were dead. Because Hen and I never came to your apartment that day.”
“Okay,” Bobby says, nodding neutrally as the memories wash over him. The shame of waking in the shower. The helplessness of placing his pain in his coworkers’ hands. The rock-steady warmth of Buck and Hen on either side of him.
A vise tightens around his heart.
“Is that why you’ve been checking on me?”
Buck has the gall to sound ashamed of himself when he says, “Yeah.”
“Buck, you know—hey. Look at me, this is important.” Buck, who has shifted his gaze to someplace over Bobby’s right shoulder, drags his eyes back. “You know that my sobriety isn’t your responsibility, right?”
Buck nods. “I know, and I’m not trying to… fix things, or control things I can’t. I just…” He trails off, and his eyes are shining. “I don’t want to wake up again in a world that doesn’t have you in it. This version of you, I mean.”
“Oh, kid, c’mere.” Bobby steps forward and wraps Buck in a hug.
God damn anyone who ever told this kid that his heart was a problem.
When they finally let go of each other, Bobby holds on to Buck’s shoulders. Buck sniffs, and swats a tear off his cheek with the palm of his hand.
“You’ve been through a lot, and I know you’re still sorting it out. But I also know how stubborn you are when you’re chewing on a problem,” Bobby says, drawing a wet laugh out of Buck. “I know you’ll find your way through it. And we will all be here for you. Every step, however long it takes.”
Buck nods, and breaks into a hesitant smile.
“And in the meantime, let us spoil you a little.” Bobby gives Buck’s shoulder a light jab with his fist. “We don’t want to wake up in a world without you, either.”

Ooh how abut number '11. toothpaste kisses' for soft prompts! Love your writing
Send me soft prompts! Ao3 collection post here!
Eddie is going to make everyone late.
Look: he really thinks most of it isn't his fault. He'd covered for somebody on B shift Tuesday, so he'd only had 24 hours off and he'd had to sleep through a good chunk of it, so laundry went a little by the wayside, leading to him tossing a frantic load into the washer at 5 am when he realized he had no clean work clothes. And, again, he’d covered that Tuesday shift after a 12 hour on Monday, so it’s reasonable that he forgot how dire the toothpaste situation was. The look Chris had given him when he said they needed to run to the store right now at bright and early 6 am would have withered a lesser soul, so at 6:04 Eddie, still in sweatpants and wearing ratty old slides is running down the block solo to grab whatever they have at the nearest corner store. He winces as he grabs the baking soda kind (Chris hates it) and books it back to the house, trying to breathe through the waves of oh god I’m a terrible father who left my kid alone and forgot about dental hygiene.
The house is considerably more crowded when he gets back to it. First, Chimney is lugging a dresser up the front stairs.
“What- hey- what-“ Eddie grabs the bottom of the thing, hastily shoving the toothpaste in his pocket. “What’s this?”
Chim tilts his head at him. “We were getting rid of it and you said you could use a new dresser, remember? I texted you I was coming to drop it off.”
Eddie’s phone is probably dinging away uselessly on his bedside table. “Right, yeah, sorry. There was a toothpaste emergency. Uh, thank you, we can just-“
Before he can come up with some way to finish that sentence, Carla opens the door. He hadn’t even seen her car, shit, he hopes there’s no calls right away when they get to work because he’s clearly not slept enough and should lay down again as soon as possible.
“Oh!” She says, surprised and cheerful. “Why don’t you bring that into the living room. I put your clothes in the dryer, Eddie, I figured if you were running the wash this early it was an emergency.”
Well thank god somebody has a plan and knows whats happening. He and Chim set the dresser next to a wall someplace as out of the way as they can get, and then Eddie points at Carla. “Thank you,” he says, trying to put as much sincerity into the words as possible, before pivoting to head down the hall to find Chris. Its not a long journey, the kid standing right around the corner. Eddie hands him the toothpaste. “There you go.”
Chris scrunches his nose. “Baking soda kind. Gross. And I don’t need it, Dad, Buck brought the good stuff.”
“Buck?”
“Hey.”
Eddie pivots again to look in the kitchen, where the man himself is leaning against the counter drinking a cup of coffee out of his current favorite mug, the one with the squiggly little drawing of a frog and a chicken dancing together. “Hi.” Eddie supposes he isn’t exactly surprised he’s here, Buck is a feature of their household as much as the mug he’s holding is, but he is a little concerned about the amount of people popping out of the woodwork without him noticing. “Anybody else here? Why’d you bring toothpaste?”
Buck grins. “I think you’ve seen everybody now. And you were running out when I was here last, you’ve been busy, figured it might be helpful.”
Eddie nods, a little… wordless, maybe, a little bowled over. “I’m gonna…” he gestures towards the bathroom and limply leaves the conversation. By the time he’s brushed his teeth (it is the good stuff, the pricier name brand arctic fresh, Eddie usually goes for generic spearmint) Chris and Carla are ready to head out the door. Eddie is glancing at the clock and nervously calculating exactly how wet the clothes he’s about to put on are going to be as he says goodbye, leaning to kiss Carla, Chris, and Chim’s cheeks. “Ok, thank you, have a great day at school, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
It takes a few seconds of staring at Chimney’s trying not to laugh face, and listening to Chris’s not-trying-not-to-laugh-at-all guffaws before his brain catches up to his actions. “Oh my god.”
Chimney grins and Eddie shakes his head futilely against the oncoming barrage. "I always knew I was your favorite." He smacks a hand to his cheek and swoons, and Eddie rolls his eyes. "Everyone said it was Buck, but I knew the Han-Diaz love connection was just waiting to happen."
Buck is laughing somewhere behind him, and Eddie wants to see what look is on his face, but instead he rolls his eyes again, harder, and says "I'm going to check on the laundry," and shoos his son out the door before fleeing to the dryer.
Of course it's all still fucking damp. They're already pushing it on time though (maybe if all three of them are late they can unionize against Bobby?) so he shucks his sweats and shimmies his way into the unpleasant cool of his pants. When he emerges from his shirt, wincing, he finds Buck in the hallway with him.
“Chimney says we’re running late and if you don’t hurry up he’s leaving you for dead, no matter your new found love.”
“I know, I know, I just need to find my shoes-“
“I put ‘em by the door,” Buck smiles, and then the smile becomes a grin. “Hey, Eddie.”
“Yeah?” Eddie says with the right amount of apprehension for the situation.
“No goodbye kiss for me?” He tilts his head, grin thoroughly classifiable as shit-eating.
“We’re going to the same place, Buck. I’m probably gonna ride in your car.” He’s absolutely going to ride in his car, they both know it.
“Ah, so is Chimney, he got one.”
And Eddie could defend himself with the reasonable explanation that he just happened to be standing in a row next to the people he’d meant to press his affection onto, or the less reasonable explanation that he only gives goodbye kisses to people whose names start with a C, but instead he says “You want a kiss, Buck?”
And he’s moving before he loses nerve, and Buck is also moving, laughing at him, so again Eddie feels like it’s not entirely his fault when his kiss lands sort of on his cheek but mostly- it’s mostly on his mouth, which is soft and exhaling a little surprised sound against Eddie. They both pull back but maybe not as far as they probably should, if they weren’t them, if Eddie hadn’t spent the last few weeks or maybe years wondering how he could ask Buck to live on the shelf with all the mugs he’s cycled through as favorites. Then Buck darts his head forward, pecking another little kiss to his mouth, and Eddie chases him for a third, and Buck’s hand tangles in his shirt and he says “Oh” into Eddie’s mouth because the fabric is wet under his touch.
“Buckley, Diaz, I’m getting in my car, and I’m not going to defend you to Cap!”
Even at Chimney’s words they don’t entirely jump apart, just slide back a little, stand more firmly facing each other as the front door distantly opens and shuts.
“We’re gonna be late,” Buck says, an awed little smile pulling at his face.
“Yeah,” Eddie says, a little breathless. Maybe he can blame that on the cold clothes. “We should probably get going.”
Buck nods, and barely finishes the motion before Eddie puts his hands on his face and pulls him in for another minty kiss, firm, a promise. Buck is grinning when he backs off and Eddie is sure his face is a mirror image as he ducks around him to go find his shoes.
They’re late. But as Buck settles next to him on the couch, all pressed along his side despite the still damp clothes, Eddie thinks it was worth the wait.

a miserable pile of secrets [9-1-1 | Eddie Diaz & Hen Wilson | 1/1]
1.8K words | friendship | emotional hurt/comfort | implied/referenced cheating
a miserable pile of secrets [on AO3]
She finds Eddie up on the rooftop, which makes sense, given that Buck is currently working out his feelings on the heavy bag after Bobby finally snapped at the two of them to get their acts together unless they wanted to be benched. Chim's down in the weight room with him, which means that Hen is up here in the warm night air to talk some sense into the other half of their codependent little unit, who is currently perched on one of the folding chairs that they usually leave up here. He's as still as a statue, tense like he's afraid of what his body might do if he lets it move.
"Hey," Hen says, and he gives a jerky little nod of acknowledgement. "Mind if I sit?"
"Go ahead."
"Thanks." She pulls out one of the other chairs and sits down. "So."
"Bobby sent you."
"I sent myself," she corrects mildly, and watches Eddie's shoulders hunch a little. "I don't think I've ever seen you and Buck fight like that."
Though the truth is, she really only caught the tail end of it. Buck's frustrated voice rising on, "Do you hear yourself? How did you think this was going to work out? Have you even thought about Chris? What, you were just going to introduce him to her like—"
"Chris? Since when is how I parent my son any of your business?"
"I don't know, Eddie, you kind of made it my business when you put me in your fucking will!"
"Yeah, well, maybe that was a mistake!"
There was ringing silence in the wake of that. Then Buck said something quieter, inaudible from where Hen and Chim were standing frozen outside the locker room door, and Eddie spat, "Go to hell. I'm done talking about this."
The door slammed open and he stormed out, only pausing for a moment when he saw the two of them standing there. It wasn't until he'd already stomped up the stairs to the loft that Buck emerged, scowling.
"I don't want to talk about it," he snapped, before either of them could speak.
That was six hours ago. Neither of them has said a single word to each other since outside of the bare minimum on calls. The tension in the back of the truck has been thick enough to cut with a knife, and none of Chim's increasingly desperate jokes has done a damn thing to lighten the mood.
Hen doesn't blame Bobby for being fed up with the pair of them. She's caught somewhere between that and worry, herself. This isn't like them. Either of them.
Eddie shrugs again, tense. "I don't really feel like talking about it."
"Mm."
Hen kicks her legs out, relaxes into the chair and waits him out. It doesn't take long. Maybe two minutes before he lets out an angry little huff and says, "Marisol dumped me this morning."
"Oh," Hen says. That explains some of the mood, anyway. "Well, I'm sorry to—"
"I cheated on her. She found out."
She closes her mouth. For a moment she just looks at him: his tight jaw, his hands in fists on his thighs, so tense he looks like he's about to snap. Like looking through a warped mirror to a younger version of herself, and maybe that's why she manages some gentleness when she says, "That doesn't sound like you."
"Yeah. That's what Buck said. Shows what he knows."
"Why'd you do it?"
"It doesn't matter. It was stupid. I fucked up."
"If you're waiting on me to tell you otherwise, you'll be waiting a while." Eddie lets out a sharp, bitter little bark of laughter, and Hen adds. "I've been there, you know."
"Yeah. But it's not—Karen forgave you."
"Eventually, yeah. She didn't have to."
"Yeah," Eddie says, and then doesn't say anything else.
"Is that what you and Buck were fighting about?"
He shrugs again. Like talking to a damn teenager, Hen thinks. Not Denny, with his easy sweetness, but like one of the other kids who come through their home sometimes on temporary placements: already on the defensive, claws out, ready to fight.
"I guess," he mutters finally.
"You put him in your will?" Eddie scowls at her, and she shrugs. "Hey, if you want it to be a secret, maybe don't have your domestics at the top of your lungs in the locker room we all use."
He scoffs, clearly annoyed, but doesn't get up and storm off, so she's counting that as a win. Finally, he says, "Yeah. He's down as Chris's legal guardian if something happens to me. Since—uh, since I almost died in that well collapse a few years back."
Oh. Hen contemplates that for a moment, squares it up in her head with what she already knows about Eddie. It's not, she'll admit, completely out of left field. But still. "And you think maybe that was a mistake?"
Eddie groans, dropping his head back. "I shouldn't have said that. I didn't mean it."
"Maybe you should tell Buck that."
"He's pissed at me."
"Seems mutual."
"Yeah," Eddie says, wry and still kind of irritated. But then he sighs. "You ever do something where you know the whole time you're doing it that it's going to blow up in your face, and somehow that still doesn't stop you?"
"Yep," Hen says, remembering a dark little motel room and the sharp cut of Eva's smile. A whole damn pile of fuck-ups, that relationship was, and she dragged it along with her to almost ruin the best thing in her life.
"I keep thinking I see Shannon. It's like she's just around the corner, like if I turn around fast enough, she'll be there, and I'll be able to go back and make it right. But I can't."
"No. You can't."
"It's been five fucking years."
"No timeline on grief."
"I went on a date with a woman just because she looked like her." Hen raises her eyebrows at him. He slouches lower in his seat. "A couple of dates. It—didn't end well."
"Mm. You mean because she turned out to be a whole damn person who wasn't Shannon, or because your girlfriend found out?"
"Both," Eddie mutters. "Believe me, I already heard it from Buck."
"Oh, I believe it."
"But he's—" Eddie snaps his mouth shut.
"Kind of a hypocrite on this particular subject?" Hen offers.
"That's not what I was going to say. He's with Tommy now. So."
"So?"
"Never mind. It doesn't matter."
Hen would dearly love to interrogate that line of thinking, but she keeps her mouth shut. For a little while, they don't speak. It's a transient kind of peace; their next call could come at any minute. But for now, the city's as quiet as it ever is, lit up and beautiful in the distance.
Eventually, Eddie shifts in his chair, straightens up like he's bracing for something, then says, abruptly, "Can I ask you a personal question?"
Hen raises her eyebrows. "Go ahead."
"Have you ever been with a guy?"
"Excuse me?"
"Forget it," he says quickly, hunching in on himself again. "I don't even know why I asked. You can tell me to go to hell."
She almost does tell him to go to hell. Has her mouth open and everything. But then she takes another good look at his face and lets the words dissipate.
"No," she says finally. "Kissed a couple of boys in high school, but I pretty much always knew it wasn't for me."
"Oh." Eddie's mouth twists. He's still staring a hole in the concrete by his feet, and Hen wishes like hell that this was easier for him, that he could have stumbled into it with wide eyes and open arms without leaving a trail of wreckage in his wake. Buck managed it, but it's not like that for everyone. She knows that.
"Karen was engaged to a man, you know," she says, and she watches him still, watches him turn, finally, to look at her.
"I didn't know that."
"It was a long time ago. College sweetheart. She called it off a week before the wedding. Broke his damn heart, from what I hear. Probably better in the long run, though, all things considered."
Eddie laughs at that, a raw, horrible little sound. "I was a bad husband to Shannon. I loved her so much, and I still could never—and I always thought that maybe, if we'd just had more time, maybe I could have gotten it right, and we could have been a family again, and it would have been okay."
"But she died."
"She asked me for a divorce."
"Oh." Hen takes a breath, lets it out. Careful, careful. "I didn't know that."
"Nobody knows that. I mean. Bobby does. But nobody else. Because she died two days later, so I never had to—to tell anyone. I never had to admit it. I could keep pretending. But it doesn't even matter, because I've also fucked up every relationship I've been in since. So it's kind of obvious where the problem is."
"Mm. You know what my mama used to say?"
Eddie cuts her a look. "What?"
"Get down from that cross, we need the wood."
When he laughs this time, it sounds a little more real. Hen nudges her knee against his, and for a minute they sit there together in silence.
"I fucked up," he says again, but it's calmer.
"Yep."
"What the hell do I say to Buck?"
Not Marisol, Hen notes. Though the truth is she's pretty sure that whole relationship was dead and gone long before whatever went down this morning. Maybe from the very beginning. Eddie's just got a bad habit of dragging those corpses around. "Sorry might be a good start."
"He's gonna ask why. I don't have a good answer. I can't—" He looks over at her, and all Hen can think is that he looks so damn young. "I can't."
"So tell him that. You know he's not gonna push it."
"Yeah, he will."
"He's worried about you."
Eddie scoffs. "Yeah."
That was, Hen surmises what the fight was about in the first place. Unstoppable force, immovable object. Sometimes she wishes she could just knock their stubborn heads together until they showed some sense.
"He loves you," she says, and Eddie flinches.
"I know that," he mutters.
Hen sighs. "Just talk to him. You don't have to tell him anything you're not ready to tell him, but just—talk to him. Okay? For all our sakes."
"Yeah, okay," Eddie says, sounding defeated. "Sorry about that."
"We'll survive," Hen says. She bumps her knee against his again, and they sit there together in silence, watching the city lights, until the bell starts going off below.

Ravi(goes to stand with Hen and Chimney at the loft railing):...What are you doing? Hen: Buck and Tommy. (Ravi looks where they're looking and sees Buck and Tommy standing (closely together) at the bay door having coffee, and talking and laughing) Chimney: Fifty down on whether Eddie shows up to challenge Tommy to a duel. Ravi: Oh, can I get in on that with (looking through his wallet)...five? Hen: That's not a bet, that's milk money, dude. (as they watch, Buck laugh loudly at something Tommy says) Chimney: Oh and he's laughing! Because he made a joke, which probably wasn't funny. Oh ha ha, oh you funny pilot man...! Ravi: I left the rest of my cash at home. Hen(noticing something): Oh here we go, here we go. OK - (Eddie comes in through the bay door, past Buck and Tommy) Chimney: Come on, come one, come on....! ( Eddie continues on, glancing over at Buck and Tommy, but then looking back at his phone) Hen(smiles, making 'grabby-hand' motion for Chim's money):...Takes it like a man, and walks away. (Eddie suddenly stops and turns back around, walking back toward Buck and Tommy) Ravi: - He's coming back. Chimney: Oh yes he is! Mm-hmm, give me my money! (Buck sees Eddie approaching) Eddie: Hi. You having coffee? Buck: In fact we are. Eddie: Oh, it looks good. You know I'm sorry to interrupt, but I have to do inventory on the truck and you know that's always more efficiently done with two people. So, you wanna gimme a hand? Buck: Are you serious? When? Tommy: I'm gonna guess now. Eddie: Look if you're busy don't bother, it's no problem. But I just think more eyes and more hands make less work, y'know? Buck(to Tommy): I'm sorry. I really am better with the clipboard than he is. Tommy: It's OK. Buck: I'll call you tonight. I'm sorry Tommy. Tommy: It's OK. Go. Eddie(to Tommy): Take care! (Buck and Eddie walk away from Tommy, and Tommy leaves. Chimney and Hen start laughing) Hen: I think I owe you another twenty for that... Chimney: Yeah I think you do!

Tommy gets from his shift late at night, basically in the morning. The day was long and night even longer. All he wants now is to fall in his bed and sleep for days.
Opening the door, he's met with silence and a bunch of envelopes near it. He is ready to leave it for tomorrow, but his inner perfectionist doesn't let him leave the mess. He gets it up.
He quickly looks through all of them, noting that all of it's just ads or bills, except the last one. Beautiful baby blue envelope with the handwriting he still remembers as if he saw it yesterday and not a year ago.
Evan.
It's Evan's letter.
Tommy doesn't know why man writers him that way. Using paper and envelope and real mail and not any of their friends. Man knows Tommy has weekly get togethers with Eddie and Chim. Or not on the next barbeque, where they will meet again, like all the time over the last years. Tommy hopes he has to solve his health problem and finally get his weight back. It's sad how Evan was just a ghost of his old self when Tommy saw him over Christmas.
Actually, Tommy doesn't know why man writes him that way. What did he want to tell Tommy that they didn't tell when 118 closed them in the closet in Han's house and didn't let them leave till they got closure? Till they got the understanding why they could never work.
Why does Evan need to write to him?
Tommy weighs the idea about leaving the letter till he wakes up, but his heart is not beating easily without knowing what Evan needed to get on paper and send him.
He opens the envelope. Inside he finds the paper and the photo.
It makes him tear up. The photo is their selfie after they buried Billy. On the outside he can see another handwriting: my happiness.
Tommy swallows, taking a letter in his hands, he sees dried dots if someone was crying when writing.
Dear Tommy,
Hi! How are you? I'm sorry that I'm doing it that way, but I couldn't make myself text or call or come to see you. Because I was afraid. Afraid you would love me just because I'm in pain. Only because I'm in pain. And I had enough of it in my childhood. But I also was afraid you won't be around. It was easier to leave you out. Just as a memory. A good memory. Best memory.
Anyway, if you're reading this, then I'm already dead. Leukemia. Was diagnosed not long before Christmas. It's actually ironic that I'm dying from the same thing that killed my brother and nothing can help.
Ironic and painful. I'm not gonna lie. It's really painful. And not even the treatment or that it doesn't help. No. Painful is that I still have so many things I could live for, try and find, but I don't have time.
But at least I had time to love you. Like I never did with anyone. You're my greatest love, Tommy Kinard. The way you made me feel is unbelievable. Indescribable.
I'm so lucky that I loved and was loved by you. The photo I'm giving you is the moment I had the first “oh! I'm falling for him”, but actually I was falling since you flew us into a hurricane. Thank you for kissing me and giving us those incredible 6 months. I've never been happier. Only with you.
You kissed me and showed me the real me. You showed me I can be loved. And that I can love people.
I know you had reasons to leave. And please know if not for my diagnosis I'd try to call you on New Year's eve, offering you to come and give us another chance. Give you that decision to make.
I hope you forgave me for taking this decision from you. But I can't make you see me dying. See me in pain. See me losing myself. I can't. It could break you, baby. So hard. It's better you find out like that. Maddie or Chim would call you about funerals. Please come. Because I need you to let me go like we did for Billy. I won't be at peace without your goodbye.
But I'm saying it first. Goodbye my love and please remember that I loved you till my very last breath. You were so loved, baby. Please let people love you in the future.
With love,
Your Evan
Tommy falls on his knees, holding the letter close to his heart. He can't see anything. Everything's so blurry. He just cries and cries, screaming in the night.
The sun is rising. The new day is coming. The day he's going to live, knowing that Evan would never call him again.
