Just shows how Shadow is so tragic. He was always seen as an asset. A powerful and dangerous asset, even though everyone knew he was just a child. He lost his older sister, the person he loved the most, and was shoved into a tube and put into stasis immediately. He didn't even want to fight or anything, just grieve, and was practically torn away from Maria and Gerald.

Shadow had his agency stripped from him from the beginning and it's devastating to think that the decision to sacrifice himself was the first one he made on his own without anyone manipulating him for the first time since arriving on Earth.
