gem being the only hermit head in magic mountain row is so cute, not just because mumbo rightfully earned it in hand to hand combat but because i like to think she's just visiting, a lone adventurer stopping by a fun little town on her journey. or maybe there's a connection between the Mined(tm) laboratory and the old research facility in the strange village just over the other side of the mountain, and she's come by to find out more. maybe these places never existed at the same time and she's found her way there anyway, a lone wanderer through planes of time existence...

In most BBC Merlin analyses, and sometimes, mine included, we often talk about how much Merlin forgets himself and who he is, in the later seasons, his personality and character and beliefs, and how he gets replaced by something heavier, by a person who’s literally the other side of Arthur, who can’t think on his own, if he doesn’t consider him first.

But what I personally think we get wrong is when this happens. Because Merlin confesses to Arthur, “I’m happy to be your servant, ‘till the day I die.”

And that happens so early, and what does Arthur do, if not fall irremediably in love? It’s not even a fall, it’s a continuous precipice, a tumultuous one, where he doesn’t know what to hold onto, if not on the one man who unfolded that truth to him, only after a few months of knowing him.

Merlin was ready and did lay down his life for Arthur, mere days later to their first meeting.

No matter their choices, whatever they are bad or good, they can’t do it otherwise, even if they want to, they can’t decide differently, because theirs is not love: it’s destruction, it tears them apart, yet they can’t stop picking up the pieces, one after one, until they’re all again.

Merlin is woven in the fabric of the world, and if Arthur is born of that magic, then he can’t help but feel drawn to him. It doesn’t matter if Merlin is his servant or not, because he would have found a way to serve Arthur no matter the circumstances. He uses his magic only for him because he doesn’t know otherwise. Arthur writes rules and laws based on what Merlin tells him to because he doesn’t know otherwise.

They listen to none but each other, they fight for none but each other, they love none as deeply but each other.

It’s more than devotion, it’s a risk, and Merlin and Arthur took it as soon as they laid eyes on one another.

“Do I know you?”

Perhaps, Arthur did, perhaps, he felt that pull of destiny, that part of him he never understood that had awoken on Merlin’s command.

They are one and the same, and that’s more than love.

i love it when a tv show has lows that are so low you're so ashamed to ever show it to anyone ever but then highs that melt your brain a bit, like, "good fucking god, this is genuinely such an astounding piece of craftmanship... my perception of the medium, and perhaps of myself, has been challenged/changed in 40 minutes" but you cant even express that to ppl without feeling like youre fucking deranged bc my god the lows .....

Bilbo blinks, he had planned on it soon. He had been teetering on the edge of just coming clean for a few days. The stricken faces of Thorin and Dwalin in the corridor had been looping in his mind endlessly and he was at his limit. It was hard to choose a rational moment for the big reveal when all he could think was ‘i can fix this’. In his head he had always assumed Frerin’s reveal would come straight after the dragon, he hadn't been counting on complications.

“Soon.”, he answers honestly.

one interesting thing about having read the silmarillion before lord of the rings is seeing which characters get mentioned in the main books and which ones don’t. for example, feanor and celebrimbor both get several mentions but the sons of feanor have had none so far. of course tolkien can’t mention every elf who ever lived when he has a plot to get through as well but i do wonder if it has something to do with the fact that the legacies of both those characters involved leaving behind something they made which was lasting and important while the sons of feanor only left destruction.

i do think his love language is gift giving and words of affirmation, heavy on the gift part … so spending lots and lots of money on you makes his heart flutter
