Sharing the thread I wrote over on Twitter, since there's been a lot of misinformation around Nightbringer recently

I see a LOT of people accusing Nightbringer of existing purely for "greed" because Solmare is "money hungry" when that isn't even remotely close to the truth.

And of course, legitimate criticisms are valid! No game is perfect (and I'm certainly not trying to claim that OM or NB are flawless) but criticism based on misinformation isn't helpful for anybody ✌️

I think why we all feel unsatisfied with Obey Me is honestly just the lack of accountability or closure on ANY conflict. The characters are never really held responsible for any of the shit they do to MC, MC is a total pushover who endlessly forgives them, and we never, NEVER get a single apology.

It doesn't matter how suave or romantic they make any of the boys: the most vital requirement of any romance aimed at women (because OM was originally written for a female protag even if they let you change pronouns later) is The Grovel. The ultimate female fantasy is accountability.

In a world awash with male cruelty in our daily lives, what so many AFAB players ache for in romance media is just an apology, an honest to god admittance of "I hurt you. I'm sorry."

The most beautiful phrasing of the Grovel Trope I've ever seen is this post:

--and it's the mark that Obey Me just fails to hit over and over. Real growth means accountability and there is none.

What I see behind every "well thEy're dEmoNs" and "if they were NiCE wouldn't it be boRiNG?!?" is a lot of AFAB people learning to cope with never getting the real satisfaction they crave.

The graveyard on the front I can accept, but the double indoor balcony in the main entrance is fucking insane. The stairs are there just to go to the first balcony, and the second balcony (which goes to the second floor) has all the lights turned off.

Why see, right? Why see when we can just guess our way around the house?

Y'all know damn well that lower balcony leads nowhere. The ceiling in the living room is too high; the second floor starts on the second balcony.

The stairs are there to look at the portraits and to admire the dragons from behind.

Also. A sofa at the entrance and then the next one is ALL THE WAY BACK.

So, I've been thinking about Obey Me recently. It started when I logged into the game to see what re-run banner was currently going on in the OG app and I was hit with a wave of nostalgia. I had been a day one player and I remembered how much I enjoyed the game. To this day, it holds a special place in my heart and for the most part, my experience with it has been good.

That is until I think about the writing and character development in the later seasons and Nightbringer. When I think about those, I don't feel nostalgic or happy. I feel disappointment and a little bit of anger. Most of my frustrations are toward how the writing for the story and characters started going downhill. That isn't to say it was all bad, but it wasn't improving either. Then when Nightbringer came out, I got more disappointed by the choices Solmare was making. It got the point where one day, I stopped played both games. I just wasn't feeling happy. I took a break but that break ended up turning into a break-up. I was done. And I definitely felt sad about it.

Then came the announcement that both games would stop updating and I was really annoyed and quite frankly, angry.

I could go on and on about the decline of the games and IP, but I do want to say that despite my anger and disappointment, I also remembered the times where I had fun with the OG game. It's complicated, to say the least, and my feelings are mixed.

I wish things would've turned out differently for the game.

I've talked about this at length on Twitter, so I'll try to keep it short and sweet:

OBEY ME IS NOT ENDING!

I've seen a lot of people panicking and a lot of people doomposting about the games being shut down, about how Solmare is abandoning the franchise, etc.

THIS IS NOT WHAT'S HAPPENING.

- From Solmare's announcement a couple of days ago.

The main story in Nightbringer is being wrapped up, but that's it. The games are not being shut down. The games are not going anywhere. You can still play the original Obey Me! and Nightbringer as much as you want. The main story will simply be finished at Lesson 60.

The franchise itself is not ending, either. Solmare has made multiple statements about this and has made it very clear that Obey Me! the series itself will continue. And the voice actors have confirmed this as well!

In addition to both games remaining, there are multiple new Obey Me! projects coming next year!

According to Solmare, the next era of Obey Me! will include new content, live in-person events, new merch, collaborations, and more that will be announced in 2025.

Believe me, I completely understand the disappointment that comes with this news. I'm deeply saddened and disheartened to know that the main story will be wrapping up so soon. I had been following Obey Me! since before the first game even came out (ever since the promotional trailer was shown at AX in 2019) and I've been a daily player of both games since Day 1. It's absolutely valid and expected for people to be upset.

However, I do think that we need to stop spreading misinformation. There have been a LOT of posts on both here and Twitter by people claiming that the series is over and that the games are being shut down. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Not only have I seen far too many people repeating these false claims, I've seen far too many people believing them at face value. I have seen too many people saying that now they're going to delete the games from their phone and leave the fandom, and I've seen fic writers and artists say that they're going to start deleting their works "because it's over now so why bother"

PLEASE DON'T. Obey Me is not ending! The games aren't being shut down! The series is still continuing with new content coming next year!

Repeating this misinformation isn't just damaging for the people who believe it, but if you're pushing players away from the fandom/series because they believe it's been shut down, then that's going to harm Obey Me! as well. We will only continue to get more new content and new OM projects if the series is successful, and alienating fans won't help anybody.

There's been a lot of anxiety and doomerism these past couple days. And while I totally understand feeling disappointed, PLEASE do not make false claims or spread misinformation. The games are not going anywhere and you can still play both of them as much as you want. The Obey Me! series is continuing with multiple new projects next year!
