Y/N’s POV

Sodapop and I are going to the drive-in to see Beach Blanket Bingo tonight, we’ve been wanting to go somewhere alone for quite sometime because of him working including me going to school.

When Soda and I got to the drive-in, I can see some socs and their Mustangs and Corvairs, as usual. When Soda and I parked we went to the concession stand to get some food and snacks. When we got there, I see Bob and Randy, looking smug as ever.

“Just ignore them.” I whisper into Soda’s ear.

“I will Y/N/N.” He whispers back.

We get our food and drinks and we walked out like there was no one in the room. We get back to the car and get in the trunk of Soda’s truck and we get comfortable, ate our food, I cuddle up with Soda and enjoy the movie.

After the movie, Soda decided to take us to the lot to be somewhere quieter. I cuddled up with Soda again and look up to the stars to see any shapes in the sky.

“Did you like the movie?” Soda says looking at me.

“Yeah I did, I really loved the dancing and the fashion in the movie.” I say looking at him.

“I only liked the dancing.” He jokingly says.

“Come on, what else did you like?” I asked him.

“Fine, I liked the dancing and the sets of the movie.” He says trying to think.

“I like that better.” I smile.

Soda looks at me and kisses me, I kiss back. We look at each other and I make him get on top of me. We begin to make out, we haven’t done this in a while now but I’m glad we’re doing this.

Soc style vs. Greaser style

Socs: Bold colors, pastels, short skirts, letterman jackets, long sleeves, and sleek clothes. Socs wear lots of bright and pastel colors. Pastel colors signify elegance, optimism, innocence, and even dreaminess. Mini Skirts are a huge part of the girly soc style, in the 60’s they were a sign of the new generation and playfulness. Letterman jackets are a sign of academic achievements, popularity, and toughness in the 60’s.

Greasers: grays, blues, browns, dark-toned colors, denim, grungy, tank tops, long or ripped pants, flannels, and jean jackets. Denim is CRUCIAL to the Greaser style, denim often symbolizes revolution, the working class, and opposing mainstream ideas. Blue is a color of loyalty, every single greaser is loyal to each other. Every greaser is wearing something blue, the only one that isn’t is Darry. He wears lots of brown, brown is a color of strength and dependability. It’s important that he’s not wearing blue because Ponyboy perceives Darry as someone who isn’t loyal to him, but really Darry is always there for Pony, he just doesn’t realize it.

more ponyboy headcanons (can you tell who my fav greaser is?)

has Curly (and most of the gang) wrapped around his finger

definitely would color his shoe laces and draw on his shoes

his notes are either the most organized of the entire class, or literally all over the place and only he can read them, it changes between classes

Used to climb trees as a kid but fell out one time and hit his head so he had to stop

sometimes he'll just sit with Curly and draw as a kind of date (he usually draws curly)

Loves English class, hates science (me core)

almost all of his clothes are actually other people's. most are darry or soda's, some from other members of the gang and Curly

pony is like the only person that Curly actually listens to, besides occasionally tim and Angela

Tried to crop some of his shirts and it turned out awful

Definitely dyed his hair a wild color at some point, probably purple or orange

his favorite flower is something inside like a spider Lily or a ghost orchid

Would pick up centipedes and shit but if there's an ant on him he's screaming bloody murder

Has gotten into (verbal) fights with gang when defending curly (mostly with Johnny and soda)

One time he walked out of curly's room at an ungodly hour and saw Dallas walking out of Tims's and they both just made eye contact and never talked about it again

On plaid and Madras

Now, don’t get me wrong there’s a lot of trivial differences and deep similarities between Soc’s and Greasers … but I’m thinking of clothing again. It’s largely their style, how they wear it and what they can afford that divides them. As nothing will exactly keep a soc from wearing jeans and a shirt if need be but it’d be different- it’d be clean, there wouldn’t be holes etc. Where as to a greaser dressing like a soc they both can’t afford and wouldn’t be caught dead as it doesn’t appeal to them.

For example this is Madras:

This is flannel:

On its surface it takes a moment to notice the difference but it’s striking. Greasers are blue collar - they’re working. They’ll have your heavy, flexible and made to last in a physical job style shirts. They’ll also tend to have the snap together style buttons as opposed to the but through the hole… if someone knows like button terminology that’d be great.

Madras is also well made, but more breathable, typically short sleeve and expensive. It’s plaid yes but a different type, also styled differently. Worn more to a boat or socially(ahaha) — short sleeve or button down — which is still different than a work flannel. I’ve seen it referred to as “the surfer shirt” too if that gives you any further class indication.

The differences in plaid pattern become more apparent when you know what to look for, madras seem to be much larger and more spread out? Or you’ll notice nicer but far less durable material etc.

Honestly this did surprise me as for some reason I thought Madras was another brand name (it might be) instead of a style of shirt, I was thinking like Lacoste or vineyard vines or Polo— which they’d still wear as Soc -> Prep.

It’s so interesting as it can also further show how similar … how at the end of the day both groups are a bunch of teenagers but also their divide- the money, the attitudes. As there is something to be said that they look so similar but there is also some clear key differences— if this wasn’t a quick post off the top of my head perhaps I’d make a better examination but this was more on their literal clothes lol.

So looking at the musical costumes, Soc’s are in madras! I believe? Someone more familiar fact check me.
