As much as the ending hurt, I wholeheartedly believe it was the most positive outcome to develop from the overall plot of season two in order to pursue season three on account that, contrary to what it may seem, the metaphor behind season two was not actually love, but that self-acceptance and dependence on familiarity cannot coexist with the idea of “good versus evil” once it has been ingrained so far into the development of personality and self-awareness. In this essay, I will—
#look I’m going through it okay#I’m trying to find the deeper meaning so it doesn’t sting as much#good omens#good omens 2#good omens season two#bai shit talks#gos2#gos2 spoilers#im sorry my minor is sociology and my major is English#y’all weren’t winning this season with me

“And how she let the pomegranate juice,
Drip from her smiling lips,
Even Hades trembled under sweet Persephone’s gaze.”
The tantalising smell of old leather and paper hugged your nostrils as soon as you crossed the threshold of the outdoors into the library. The entire room had the faint smell of sandalwood wafting through it as well, which your lungs appreciated as you breathed the air in.
Having spent only six months in your university as a freshman, you had never dared to step foot into the university’s famed collection of books more than five times. You were far too intimidated by it. That, and also the fact that you had a tremendous amount of work hanging over your head. And you certainly did not want to disappoint your parents, who worked day and night in ensuring that you had a proper education.
“Y/Nnie come on!” Your best friend, Jeongin, grabbed your hand and dragged you further into the grand building. Jeongin was the first friend you had made in college, having argued furiously with him in your sociology class on the modern feminist forms of thought. Deciding that he was smart enough to never keep you bored, you promptly shook hands with him. He must have thought so too, because the very next day, he introduced you to his band of friends, with whom he had grown up since childhood.
And now, you could see one of those friends waving to the both of you from a very large table. It was Lee Minho–dance prodigy, archeology student in his third year, frequent arson enthusiast and a cat dad. That was what you had gotten from him, six months into your friendship
“Hyung!” Jeongin practically leapt on the stunning man as soon as he came near him, “I’ve missed you so much!”
Minho made a face of disgust, but you could see the faint smile threatening to spill out as he hugged Jeongin back.
“Let go of me before I suffocate you, brat.” Minho said, giving you a smile as Jeongin reluctantly pulled back, “Alright, Y/N?”
“Good as always.” You responded with a grin. “Oh, congratulations on your win at the Dance Masters by the way!” Minho tilted his head at you as a ‘thank you’, with his ears turning furiously red, and his smile widening.
“And what about me?” A smooth voice made you jump as the ever-present smile of Hwang Hyunjin appeared before your eyes.
“Give me a warning before you pop out of nowhere!” You laughed, being engulfed into a tight hug by Hyunjin, “And congratulations to you, as well.”
“Why thank you.” Hyunjin did a dramatic sort of curtsy after unleashing you from his arms, “Hyung, have you seen Lix anywhere? He forgot his keychain with me.”
“He’s still stuck in class.” Minho muttered, raising his arms up abruptly and stretching with a very loud sigh, “My bones are so stiff, I swear to God.”
“Could you keep it down, old man?”
Perhaps the most annoying voice in the entire campus rang in your ears as you spun on your heel to see the bane of your existence. The world’s most insidious bastard faced you, in the form of a 5 '10, history-majoring, glasses-wearing, probably drinks pomegranate juice in the morning sophomore.
Kim Seungmin.
The universe couldn't have made a more negative person.
And a more perfect secret boyfriend too.
“Seungmin!” Hyunjin reached his arms out to straddle the man into a hug. You snickered at the sight of Seungmin’s disgusted face.
“Haven't seen you around in a while, Seung.” Minho said, “Been cleaning any more books recently?” Seungmin sighed dramatically, and miraculously swept out of Hyunjin’s tight arms, giving a sarcastic smile to Minho.
“Oh no hyung,” He said in an overly sweet voice, “Nowadays, I’ve just been spending my time wondering how on earth you thought purple was a good colour for your hair.”
Minho glared at Seungmin, who only smiled sweetly. His gaze caught yours in a swift glance.
"And I see that Miss Shorthead has decided to visit me.” He said, bending down a bit to be at your eye-level, “Do the other dwarfs know how to read as well?”
“Would it kill you to be nice for once?” You said, trying to send you a glare, which instantly disappeared when Minho decided to coo at you.
“Aww you look so adorable when you’re angry.” He chuckled, leaning against the table, “You look like my cat, Dori.”
You looked at Minho with a pleading look as if to say ‘not now. ‘Not in Seungmin’s presence’. Although that didn't work very well, evident from the smirk forming on Seungmin’s face.
“Well that’s maybe because–” Seungmin’s words were gracefully interrupted by the long-haired dancer.
“Well, I’m just going to go ahead and take this to Lix.” Hyunjin sighed, sending you a smile. You sent him one back, silently thanking him for saving you from Seungmin’s taunt about your height.
“I wanna come too.” Jeongin said resolvedly, swinging his bag over his arm and looking at you, “Do you wanna come? We can see Lix hyung after so many days again!” You nodded frantically, avoiding Seungmin’s curious expression. Anything to get out of that situation.
“Well that’s settled then.” Minho groaned like an old man, “Yah Kim Seungmin, got any books for stiff shoulders here?”
“Wow hyung, I didn't know you could actually read.”
“You little–”
You were already halfway out the door by the time both of them started bickering like a divorced couple again, frolicking away in the autumn sun alongside Hyunjin and Jeongin, the latter still holding your hand.
“Keep dragging her like that, and Changbin hyung will have your head for dinner.” Hyunjin chuckled, in response to which Jeongin rolled his eyes.
“He knows we’re friends, pabo.” He said, “Plus, no offence Y/Nnie, but I’ve already fallen for someone else.” He sighed dramatically, letting go of your hand and clutching his chest, “She’s the most gorgeous female person I’ve ever seen in my life.”
“Use the phrase ‘female person’ in front of her and you’re not gonna get so far as a glance.” You joked making Hyunjin laugh raucously, “It's Min-Jeong from our econ class right?”
Jeongin didn't even bother asking how you knew, all too aware of your highly observant nature, one that rivalled Minho and his cats.
“Glad to know you have enough brain to know not to date your best friend’s younger sister.” Hyunjin sent you a wink, brushing his long hair back, “Anyone going to Seungmin’s book-reading thing tomorrow?”
“I am.” You piped up, casually fixing the button of your coat, and looking back up to see the utterly shocked faces of the two boys, “What?”
“You.” Jeongin gasped, “Oh my god.” He gasped, looking at Hyunjin with wide eyes and then pumping his fist in the air, much to your alarm, “Oh my god, I knew it! I knew it, I WAS RIGHT!” Hyunjin pressed his hands to his ears, very annoyed by Jeongin’s sudden screaming. You, on the other hand, sported a confused face.
“Mind telling us what you were right about, Newton?” You said, slapping Jeongin’s arm. He cleared his throat and looked at you with a teasing expression.
“You like him, don't you?” He giggled, “You like Kim Seungmin.”
“Did we accidentally feed him drugs?” You laughed awkwardly, avoiding both of their eyes, to which Jeongin gasped dramatically again.
“Suspicious how you're not looking into my eyes, Seo Y/N.” Jeongin stated with the air of a detective, “Very suspicious.”
“Hyune, mind informing my brother that he needs to go and hunt down a fox today?” You glared at Jeongin, who kept giggling like a villain, “Yang Jeongin, if you don’t stop laughing, I will put a frog in your pants.”
“Alright, alright.” Jeongin laughed, clutching his stomach, “I’m not getting off the SeungY/N train anytime soon though.” he threw you a wink, to which you gagged theatrically.
“There’s nothing to like about that asshole.” You defended yourself, climbing up the steps of the building that you had reached, “Look, I’m just going to the book-reading to support him. You know, like a good friend would do.”
“Huh, I didn't realise good friends call their friends, assholes.” Hyunjin interjected, eyeing you up and down, quickly raising up his hands in defeat when he saw you turn maliciously towards him, “Hey, I’m just making an observation.”
“I’ll take that as an observation then.” You eyed him suspiciously to which he chuckled, “Kim Seungmin is the most insipid, emotionless, inhumane bastard I’ve ever met.”
“Alright, I think Lix should be out by now.” Hyunjin brought the conversation to the end, checking his watch, “You two better get to class.”
“Ugh don't remind me.” Jeongin groaned, “Miss Baek will be out for my soul today and I’m dying to get to bed.”
“I heard Min-Jeong is looking for a date in our class, for Haechan's party on Sunday.”
“And suddenly I’m awake.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Persephone would climb onto her husband’s lap like it was her throne.
To the world, Hades was an unyielding, merciless king,
For her, he was tender and vulnerable.”
“You know–” Seungmin’s voice dropped to a lower tone as soon as your back collided with the bookshelf, “—Changbin hyung will actually kill me if he finds out about this.”
“And?” You said, toying with the collar of his shirt with both your hands, “Don’t tell me I bagged a man who's too much of a pussy to stand up to my brother.”
“Your man huh?” Seungmin’s teeth bit down on his bottom lip, his hands drawing shaped against your waist, “Well, let’s just say your man is merely following the orders of his queen.”
A blush crept up to your cheeks at his words as you giggled, resting your hands on either of his shoulders. God did he look handsomer than ever, with the pale yellow night-light of the library illuminating only one side of his face. In the darkness, you could still see those beautiful eyes of his, with constellations swimming in each corner of them.You wondered how he didn’t go blind from carrying all those stars in his eyes.
“What are you staring at hm?” Seungmin whispers, his lips ghosting over yours.
“Just….....you.” You said, bringing your hands up to his hair. Your fingers automatically intertwined in his gorgeous locks, effectively massaging his head as you ran your hand through them. Seungmin melted into your touch.
“Keep doing that and I’ll go and confess to your brother tomorrow.” He chuckled, leaning down to your neck. You let out a shaky breath as his soft lips touched your neck, moving across the skin to press a number of sweet, feather-light kisses on it. It tickled you quite pink.
“Min..” You trailed off, but he didn't stop with his quest, “your lips are so soft, it tickles!”
“I could spend the whole day doing just this.” Seungmin mumbled, rising up and grabbing your waist with his right arm, whilst his left wrapped around your shoulder, pulling you closer towards him. Your hands pressed flat against his chest, wandering there before you tensed as his fingers brushed through your hair, tucking a strand behind your ear before trailing along the side of your neck. His touch was slow, deliberate, as if savouring the moment.
The longing was palpable, igniting when you threw yourself against him. Your lips crashed together fiercely, without hesitation, as if you both need this like a sick person needs medicine. The kiss was urgent, as if time was running out and every second was too precious to waste.
He presses you against the bookshelf harsher, the force of his body pinning you in place, leaving you unable to move. But there’s no fear, only a growing desire that intensifies with every movement of his lips against yours. Seungmin’s hands explore your body with an intensity that makes you shiver. You feel his nails digging into your skin, the overwhelming blend of pain and pleasure only fuels your craving for more.
You reciprocate with equal intensity, your hands roaming over his body, pulling him closer, as if mere proximity will never be enough. Your fingers tangle in his hair, tugging gently as he trails kisses down your neck, each touch igniting a fire within you.
“Fuck…Seungmin…” You gasp in between the kiss. He tastes so good, like melted sugar and hints of your chapstick; you want nothing more than to devour him, sink your teeth in deeper and let your bones fade into his as the earth keeps spinning on its unimaginably prosaic axis. You don’t want to end this, this dance of your souls pirouetting together towards the end of the world.
Unfortunately, the library was a public place, where poetry-drunk students barged in even at midnight.
“Seungmin!” A voice cried, “Kim Seungmin, where are you?!”
His lips stopped moving on yours abruptly, as he squeezed your waist and turned his face to the side, towards the source of the voice he had just heard. Being an assistant librarian really did a number on his listening skills, though he had to admit that the footsteps were loud and the voice was familiar enough for you to quickly pull your arms away from him.
“What the fuck is he doing here at this hour?” You said in a panicked tone, whipping your head around to look for a hiding place. Anyone could identify your brother’s voice easily, that distinct child-like yet powerful tone lacing it in a sweet manner.
Your brother was a music major, now in his third year. You were surprised to have been ‘introduced’ to him by Jeongin, who was completely oblivious for a month about the fact that both his best friends’ names started with ‘Seo’. And of course, much like your other friends, he didn't know anything about your and Seungmin’s relationship, having believed the white-lie that you two were just friends who liked to occasionally demolish each other’s egos.
After all, why on earth would his sweet little sister fall for such a menace like Kim Seungmin?
“Wait, what section are we in?” Seungmin’s eyes browsed through the books quickly, lighting up brightly when he fell on a bunch of books lined up perfectly under the title ‘Modern Economics’. He grinned at you with all his teeth.
“You’re getting a book on Performance Based Incentives aren't you babe?” He smirked, quickly pulling a bunch of books and setting them on the table, “And I just happened to be such a sweet friend and helped you out, right?”
“Now why–” You flicked his forehead with your finger, “—would I be getting a book this late, idiot?”
“Punctuality problems.” Seungmin stated simply, rubbing his forehead with his hand. You didn't get the opportunity to question him any further when he picked up a random book and started flicking through the pages. He cleared his throat very loudly and started speaking in an overly exaggerated voice.
“So if you’ll see this paragraph Y/N,” You stifled your laugh at his dramatic narration, “this will help you loads in your essay.”
“There you are!”
Before he could continue further, a shadow crept over in the form of your brother, Changbin. A mop of unruly curls framed his face while a tight compression shirt framed his sturdy figure. You quickly took a step back from Seungmin, which thankfully your brother didn't notice.
“Oh hey hyung.” Seungmin said calmly, with a snicker, “Since when did you become a book-worm huh?” Changbin didn’t respond to Seungmin’s teasing, instead narrowing his eyes at you.
“What are you doing here?” Changbin said, in that same over-protective brotherly tone he always used.
“I’m building a dam.” You said with a face so dead-pan that Seungmin burst out laughing, slamming his hands on the table. You grinned innocently at Changbin, who was now standing near you.
“Seriously, Y/Nnie.” Changbin gave you a soft smile, “You shouldn't be out so late at night, it's dangerous.”
“Why, because I’m a woman?” You raised a brow at your brother who shook his head in early defeat, “Bin, I’m fine seriously. Plus–” You gave what you hoped was a ‘friendly’ smack to Seungmin’s arm, “–I have this asshole to protect me. Right, asshole?” You glanced at Seungmin who, much to your alarm, smirked at you in the most flirtatious manner possible.
“Uh huhhh.” Changbin drawled out, crossing his arms over his chest, “But why ar—”
“Hyung, did you need something?” Seungmin interjected, giving a dramatic yawn, “I was gonna shut shop fifteen minutes ago, but this woman here–” He turned his head towards you, “—came in five minutes before closing and asked for very specific books.” He furrowed his brows at you in a playful manner, “Really Y/N, a man needs his beauty sleep you know?”
Beauty sleep, my ass, you thought. Your eyes lingered over the faint traces of your chapstick still stuck to his lips and the back of his head all messy from how you pulled his hair. You hoped fervently that his amazing kisses on your neck didn't leave any suspicious marks.
“Good lord, I should stop watching dramas.” Changbin chuckled, shaking his head in amusement, “Here I was thinking the both of you were canoodling or something.”
You and Seungmin made gagging sounds at the same time, giving each other a little smirk when Changbin wasn't looking.
“Do not use the word canoodling ever again.” You laughed, “Go on then, satisfy the librarian and tell him what you need.”
“No wait, let me guess!” Seungmin piped up before Changbin could even open his mouth, placing a finger to his chin and pretending to think, “You’re here…..to pick up that musical anatomy book for Chan hyung!”
Your brother’s jaw dropped open comically and Seungmin raised his chin up in a triumphant sort of way. He started speaking again before Changbin could.
“It was simple really.” He said, in a Sherlock Holmes tone, “Chan hyung asked me to keep that book on hold for him today and he never arrived to pick it up.” Seungmin beamed, “So you’re here for it, as a bribe to get him to sleep!”
Your eyes traced over Seungmin’s handsome features in the dim light, you hoped you weren't smiling too much lest Changbin raised his suspicions, but god damn did your boyfriend look so attractive when he was being smart. Even though you'd never admit it, you would have let him take you right there and then on the table in front of you. Perhaps even let him—
“Y/Nnie, are you alright? You’re red as a tomato.” Changbin looked at you with a concerned face, “Should I drop you home maybe?”
“Yeah I’m fine.” You tried hard not to glare at Seungmin’s smug face, evidently he knew you were thinking about him, “I will take that drooping me home offer though so–” You picked up your bag from the table along with a random economics book–to keep up with your and Seungmin’s little lie, “Thanks for the help.” You said to Seungmin, before walking straight out of the section with a ‘I’ll wait outside’ to your brother.
“She does realise that she needs to get that thing registered right?” Seungmin said, walking along with Changbin to the front-desk where he worked, “It’s alright, just tell her she can do it tomorrow.” He started typing away on the computer in front of him, giving Changbin the book for Chan. he glanced up at the library’s entrance, lined with huge glass windows, where he could see your crossed-arm figure, tapping your foot and waiting for Changbin to come out. Cute, Seungmin thought, I have the cutest girlfriend in the world.
“What is up with you and Y/N turning all red this evening?” Changbin interjected his train of thoughts. Seungmin leaned back when Changbin attempted to check his temperature with a hand to the forehead, successfully shoving him out after five minutes of whining about how tired he was.
Plus, he did have a big day to get ready for tomorrow. The annual book reading that the university hosted was going to be held in less that 14 hours, according to Seungmin and as the revered assistant librarian, he had the courtesy of reading a passage along with the author that was to be invited.
He wished fervently to the stars to make sure that you were there to rest his nerves tomorrow.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Under Persephone’s lips, white stars bloomed,
In his hair, only for a moment,
Then they wilted and fell,
And Hades fell.”
The sound of the autumn leaves crunching underneath your boots satisfied you as you briskly strutted to the library. Donning an orangish-brown cardigan over a little black skirt, you looked like the most autum-coded person ever. Of course, that was done on purpose, after hours of you and your friend Jisung digging through your respective closets to style the most perfect pumpkin fairy outfits. Your hair was done perfectly and your makeup was on point. You made sure to use your darkest shade of lip-gloss, one that you knew always drove Seungmin crazy whenever he saw it.
The library looked extra gothic to you today, with beautiful hues of orange and brown framing its magnificent structure. But you had no time to waste in admiring the beauty of it today.
No, today was meant for one person and one person only.
The love of your life, Kim Seungmin.
You glided into the library through the revolving doors, immediately being greeted by a patient crowd, most of them sitting on the chairs and some of them standing. Your eyes zoomed around the room before they landed on a blue haired boy. Your friend, Han Jisung, stood restlessly, tapping his foot away and adjusting his glasses every now and then.you walked over to him, smiling as he spotted you.
“I knew you’d come!” Jisung engulfed you in a tight hug, almost choking you, “Thank god you arrived in time, I was almost about to leave.” He let out a short laugh, “I have no idea who these nerds are.”
“Ji.” You said scoldingly, looking apologetically at a wide eyed girl who was sneering at Jisung, “Do you know when they’ll be starting?”
“Yeah, in about five minutes.” A deep voice behind you made you flinch. You turned around to see the smiling face of Lee Felix, Minho’s younger brother and your baking buddy.
“Lix!” Han cried, scaring the wide eyed girl again, “Man, I haven't seen you guys in forever.” He ran a hand through his hair. You chuckled.
“Isn't sophomore year supposed to be the hardest, Ji?” You said, to which Jisung responded with a frown, “I suppose our resident old man is working hard to graduate.”
“He hasn't slept in, let me see….” Jisung began counting on his fingers, making you and Felix laugh, “oh yeah thirteen years.” He scoffed, “No wonder he hasn't noticed I went out to drink with Changbin hyung yesterday.”
“Old man huh, Y/N?” Felix laughed, “Seungmin is really rubbing off on you. Oh and that lip-gloss is on point.”
Before you could respond however, the lights dimmed and a weird sort of spotlight shone on the two high legged stools which were kept at a distance, surrounded by books which sat upon miniature round tables. Your eyes started adjusting to the sudden change in light, when the familiar shape of your boyfriend stepped forward along with a black haired lady, who you assumed was the guest speaker for the day.
“Good morning everyone.” Seungmin spoke into a mic, “Please welcome our talented speaker for the day, Han Kang!” You applauded along with everyone else as the lady bowed slightly and settled down on the stool, with Seungmin sitting down next to her.
“He looks nervous, doesn't he?” Felix whispered to you. You merely nodded, silently agreeing. He did look like he was on the verge of a panic attack. Which he probably was.
But in the next moment, Seungmin’s eyes landed on yours and the world around him faded. The scattered applause and the lady speaking next to him merged into silence as he looked at you. He felt his lungs ease up and his breathing become calmer, as if you were the oxygen that he so desperately needed to get through the entire day.
You were just standing there in your ridiculously orange outfit, which he made a mental note to tease you about later, and your smile was all he needed to convince himself to man up and get through the thing that he’d been preparing for, for weeks.
“Shall we begin?” The lady’s voice and the snapping of a book’s spine alerted Seungmin. He nodded and picked up his own copy, turning to the first page and catching the underlined words just as the lady started to recite. He glanced up once more to see you taking in each and every word being recited with rapt attention.
Seungmin smiled to himself.
He couldn't wait to be in your arms after this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Oh how Hades’ hair is softest
When he’s down on his knees
Coaxing spring out
From inside of Persephone.”
The library was never an ideal place to be after 10 pm. It was practically isolated, far away from any dorm room or living spaces. The closest refugee area was a 24/7 convenience store about 2 kilometres from it. But it was the perfect place for a certain librarian and his girlfriend to hide out and get away from the world for a peaceful night.
Well, almost peaceful.
“You’re so beautiful…..” Seungmin’s hands dance your hips around the hall, before finally pushing you into the most perfect corridor. It was lined with books, along with a few chairs and a table. Seungmin loved this spot for many reasons. Particularly because it wa a blind spot to the CCTV camera,
The heat of his touch burns your skin, even through the fabric of your clothes. He leans in, his lips colliding against yours in a bruising kiss. His features are like fallen angels, you thought, so soft and yet so powerful. His hands slid lower, pushing up beneath your skirt. He stops there to squeeze your thigh gently. He breaks the kiss, breathing heavily, his eyes dark with need.
“Admit it,” he smirks, “You wore this little thing on purpose didn't you?”
“And what if I say I did?” You say boldly, you had nothing to lose, “What if I said I wore my best gloss—” You started pushing him back until he reached the table, “—and my best skirt just for you?”
You see the lust flash through Seungmin's eyes. Slowly, he releases you, allowing you to take a step back. He looks at you, desire and fear tangled in his gaze. And then, as if he had made a decision, his resolve breaks. He looks into your eyes, searching for any sign of hesitation or doubt.
He walks towards you, closing the gap between you, and whispers huskily, “Show me then.” He toys with your hips once more as you lay your hands flat on his chest, “Show me what’s under that best skirt of yours.”
Seungmin’s heart races as you unbutton the top buttons of his shirt, your fingers trembling with anticipation. His hands roam your clothed body, exploring every curve and contour with desperate hunger. He can’t get enough of you, the feel of your skin under his fingertips, and the taste of your lips on his.
“You’re desperate today, aren't you darling?” he sighs, his voice rough with desire. "So needy for me."
He reaches out, his hand gliding over the curve of your breast, tracing the delicate curve of your waist. His touch is electric, sending shivers down your spine and lighting a fire deep within your core.
With that, he pulls you close once more, his lips finding yours in a kiss that is both desperate and possessive. He pours all his longing, all his desire, into that one moment, and you can feel the intensity of his passion coursing through your veins.
“Nuh huh.” You say, breaking the kiss abruptly, and walking forwards, forcing him to walk backwards until his hands are gripping the table once more, “You did such a good job today, you deserve a reward don’t you?”
Without a word, you bent down in front of him, pulling at his pants with urgency. He helps you pull the fabric to the side, exposing his hard cock, you were mesmerised by how perfect it looked, thick, long and pretty with a pink tip.
You started teasing him, your mouth moving slowly, hands caressing his balls, but the teasing did not last long. Seungmin grabbed your hair, gently tugging your head forward. “Suck my cock,” he demanded, his voice low and rough. “No teasing.”
You hummed, the vibrations travelling through his shaft making him lean his head back, he would have almost fell were it not for the table behind him, supporting his weight. Your eyes closed shut as your lips wrapped halfway over his dick, caressing your tongue over the bottom side as you savoured your favourite salty treat in the back of your throat.
“Fuck,” he groaned, his eyes rolling to the back of his head, as you worked your tongue along his shaft. “You’re such a good girl, feels so good.”
Once satisfied with the feel of his heavy weight against your wet pink muscle, you widened out, ushering your mouth to take more as you felt his hand tighten around your head, his fingertips digging into your scalp, a low groan escaping his chapped parted lips.
"That’s it. Just like that, love…." He groaned, his fingers gently tangling in your hair at the back of your head as he guided you forward slightly. Though he didn't say it out loud, you knew he wanted you to go further in, conveyed perfectly by the way he was forcing your head forward by his hand. The harsh grip he had on your hair made you whimper around his cock.
You obeyed, taking him deeper, your mouth moving faster as you pleased him just the way he liked. Your knees scraped against the carpeted floor as you scooted further on his silent instruction, your face almost smushed into his pelvis.
“So fucking perfect…” he said through gritted teeth, his breath ragged. “Keep doing that baby, that’s a good girl.” The words sent a shiver through you, and you moaned around him, sending vibrations along his length. He gasped, tightening his grip on your hair.
His other hand reached down, his thumb caressing your cheek as your pink glossy lips stayed parted on his thick girth. Tears brimmed your eyes as he pushed forward once more, a part of you wanted to protest but all that came out was jumped whimpers around him.
You couldn’t respond, your mouth full of him, but the moans you let out told him everything. You took him deeper, gagging slightly as he hit the back of your throat, and he cursed under his breath, his abs tightening.
“I’m gonna cum,” he warned, his voice strained. “I’m gonna cum in your mouth.”
You nodded eagerly, his hands guided your movements, and his moans filled the air, telling you how perfect you were, how no one could ever make him feel like this. It only took a few more strokes before his hips jerked, and with a groan, he spilled into your mouth.
His head fell back, and he moaned, “Such a good girl, my good girl. You did so good for me…..sucked my cock so well.” You swallowed everything, licking him clean before pulling away, looking up at him as he watched you with hooded eyes.
Seungmin helped you up on your feet, guiding you into his arms as your lips met in a soft kiss. You could still taste his arousal on your tongue, sickeningly sweet, like some poisonous wine. That, combined with the fumes of his cologne only made you rub your heated, clothed core against him.
“My turn now, baby.” He whispers against your mouth.
Before you knew it, he was pushing you flat against the bookshelf, pinning you in place in a familiar position with his body. His mouth crashes against yours, the kiss is fierce and demanding, a clash of teeth and tongue that leaves you both breathless. His hands roam your body, groping and squeezing, leaving no inch of skin untouched.
“Min–baby—Seungmin.” You forcibly broke the kiss, “We’re in a library, what if someone—”
“Don’t give a damn,” he muttered, his hands tightening on your hips, pulling you closer until you were standing right in front of him. “I’ve been thinkin’ about your cunt all fuckin' day.”
The way he talked to you—filthy, raw, unapologetically possessive—set your body alight with anticipation. You had never actually fucked in the library before, but hey, new day, new learning opportunities, right?
Seungmins hand roam your body higher and higher until they reach a point where they’re pulling your cardigan off, leaving you in an undershirt, which quickly went down too. Your eyes never left his hands, lined with beautiful veins like bolts of lighting. God, did you miss them inside of you.
“Staring darling?” Seungmin cocked his head to the side, his left hand leaving your hip and grabbing your chin with his fingers. He tilted your jaw towards him, admiring your features for a moment, before taking your skirt off in an instant, leaving you in your panties and bra.
“How about we take these off, hm?” He mumbles, his hands already fiddling with the lining of your underwear. One nod from you was all it took for Seugmin to bend down, pulling your panties along with him, revealing your pussy to him, you hissed at the exposure. You gasped softly as he trailed his way back, fingers dancing on your bare legs. His hand reached your back, smoothly unbuckling the clasp to take your bra off.
“My gorgeous baby.” He crooned at your naked figure, practically glimmering to his eyes in the dim light. The moon was full tonight and slivers of it were slithering in through the windows, decorating your body with ribbons of beauty.
His fingers teased your skin, and your breath hitched as the familiar heat between you began to rise. His touch was slow, deliberate, as if he was savouring every moment. He shifted, positioning himself closer to you, his body warm and strong, the weight of him grounding you in the moment. His lips found yours again, and the kiss deepened, filled with both tenderness and desire.
Your fingers tangled in his hair when he sucked on one of your nipples, your eyes closing as you let out a soft hum. His teeth gently scraped the tender flesh, and you pulled him even closer, his hands roaming up your back, making you arch into him.
“You’re so wet, baby.” Seungmin slid his hands around your hips, gripping them tight as he positioned you just where he wanted you. He taps his cock against your velvety skin, eliciting a moan.
“Go on then.” Seungmin’s voice is powerful and dominating, “Spread those legs nice and wide for me.”
Your legs trembled as you obeyed, spreading yourself open for him, your wet, swollen clit exposed to his hungry eyes. He groaned, his breath ragged with lust as he looked at you, his lips parting slightly. Both his hands were trapping you in between them, effectively pinning you in place with your back hard against the bookshelf.
Seungmin waits for nothing else, easing himself into you, he groans loudly against your neck, the warmth surrounding him feeling euphoric. His arms wrapped around you, both of you moan as he finally sinks his cock into you. He slides in too easily, so easily you almost think he’d hadn’t meant to do it.
His hips start rutting into you fast, he needs this and he has you now, he can’t stop himself. You grip his shoulders hard, gasping and wailing, the sounds only egging him on.
He’s fucking you good as ever but there’s a sort of reckless confidence in his movements. His hands reach up to your neck, grabbing it harshly. It's so hot your head spins. You feel like you’re going to explode.
“Seungmin!” You cry out, your voice ripping its way out of your throat, “Min–harder..pl-please.”
Seungmin’s chuckles vibrate through your body as his fingers grip your neck even tighter. There were sure to be marks all over it the next day, but you owned makeup and he didn't give a damn. Your mouth parted open as he kept on chocking you, fuck it felt so good, you could have coated his dick with your cum right there and then. Your mind went blank; it was him and only him.
Pleasure surges through you like electricity, Seungmin’s thick cock hitting all the right spots from this angle. While you weerent expecting sex agasint a bookshelf, the intensity which he fucks you with right now makes you think you could get used to this.
But it didn't last long, as your erratic breaths turned into deeper ones, when Seungmin’s hands left your throat painfully. You whined at the feeling. But you couldn't even complain, all too distracted by his sweet cock making you ascend to the heavens.
“Min—oh fuckkkk—you feel–oh! You feel so good!” You cry out, not caring whether you were loud or not.
“Yeah?” he groans between thrusts as you whine sweetly in his ear. “You like that, princess?”
He pounds into you, glad that you don’t seem to mind his ferocity. He’ll be gentle with you some other time, but right now, all this pent-up energy needs to come out, and you’re receiving it so well.
“Taking me so well. My dirty little baby…” he chokes out, and you moan in response, seemingly touched by his words. He lifts himself up onto his hands, staring down at you, his hips slamming into yours. He watches your beautiful face in fascination as it twists with pleasure.
“mm, that’s it…f—fuck...” He grunts in your ear, making you whine in response. His thick, girthy cock was stretching your pussy out, your hole gripping his dick each time he pulled out and slammed right back into you.
His moans resembled a growl almost, as you both reached your climax. You were rendered speechless as your orgasm pulled on your core, about to send you over the edge with a few more sloppy and languid thrusts. You cry out as he stuffed your pussy, thick, hot spurts of his cum filling you up to the brim.He continued leaving sloppy kisses across your shoulder blades, beads of his sweat dripping onto your warm skin.
Seungmin doesn’t pull away until he’s certain that there’s nothing else left to give, and he winces out of sensitivity as he slowly moves back to pull out, his cock laying limp against his thigh.
“What–” You gasp out your words, despite the absolute exhaustion, “—the fuck did we just do?”
“I don’t know–fuck?”
There were mere seconds of silence before the both of you burst into giggles. You leaned your head forward to rest on Seungmin’s shoulder. Now feeling the actual effect of your tiredness.
“I’ll drop you home.” Seungmin mumbled in your ear. You nodded, feeling way too sleepy to respond. Seungmin’s eyes wandered down to your neck. He smirked at the dark blue bruises in the shape of his fingers. He would have to buy you coffee for the following year just to make up for it. He wondered what on earth you would tell your brother, lest he asked how you managed to burn your neck with a curling iron.
But that would be to wonder for later, Seungmin thought, brushing all ideas aside and helping you get dressed, his touch so soft and sweet, a contrast to his persona five minutes ago.
“Min?” You said, as Seungmin slipped your cardigan onto you. Your voice was slightly strained and slightly drowsy.
“Yes, my love?”
“I love you.”
Seungmin’s lips morphed into a smile, before they gently touched yours in a short, chaste kiss.
“I love you too, my dearest.”
Suddenly telling Changbin about you two didn’t seem too scary.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“And the God of the underworld loved the Goddess of Spring,
He was her darkness, and she was his light,
Without death, spring would never come,
And without spring, there would be no death.”
The air in the room stilled dramatically.
To your right sat Minho, Jisung, Hyunjin, Felix and Jeongin–all with their mouths hanging open, although Jeongin’s was threatening to form a smirk. To your left sat a smiling Chan, who had his arm around another man’s shoulder. The man in question?
Your wide-eyed brother.
Since childhood, you could always figure out Changbin’s mood easily, he was practically an open book. But now, as you sat in front of him, with your now official boyfriend Seungmin next to you, yourbrother’s expression was practically impossible to read. Was it anger? Or betrayal? Or happiness even?
“Bin?” Chan soothingly said, trying hard not to laugh at Changbin’s face, “Do you have anything to say?”
Changbin’s mouth opened for a second and then closed. And then it opened again.
“So that night–” He began slowly, you saw the other boys’ heads whip around to face him, “—when I was getting the book–” He looked up at you, “–you two were....?” He ended the sentence, but everyone in the room knew what he meant. Taking a gulp, you nodded.
“Right..yeah.. Right.” Changbin exhaled, slumping back against the sofa, “Yeah..no makes total sense, yep.”
“What he means is, he’s happy for the both of you.” Chan grinned brightly. Seungmin pulled you ever so closer with the arm he had around your waist.
“Yeah.. I’m so happy.” Changbin said through gritted teeth, before suddenly sitting up straight. He directed his eyes at you, fixing you in a stare that you knew meant you were in trouble.
‘You, we’ll talk at home.” He said, before directing his eyes to Seungmin, “And you.” He narrowed his eyes at your boyfriend, who gazed on, unfazed, “If you ever break her heart or do anything to make her sad–” He straightened his spine, “–I’ll break every bone in your body.”
“That’s it?” Seungmin piped up to everyone’s surprise, “Cool, well I don’t really prefer breaking hearts so we’ll be fine hyung. Now if you’ll excuse us,” He stood up, pulling you along with him, “My girlfriend and I have a date to get to.”
Jeongin coughed loudly while the rest of them looked on with pride, barring Changbin, as you and Seungmin quickly exited the room, running off with interlocked fingers and intertwined hearts.
The room fell silent again as the boys all stared at Changbin, who was holding his head in his hands.
“Hyung?” Jeongin began with uncertainty, “Are you alri–”
“HOW ON EARTH DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM?” Changbin all but screamed, making the other flinch, “MY LITTLE SISTER, WITH HIM? I MEAN WHAT THE F–”
He continued screaming for the next five minutes, unbeknownst that the lips of two allied souls were dancing with each other, right outside the room.
As they would dance for eternity.
fin.

Public Domain Black History Books
For the day Frederick Douglass celebrated as his birthday (February 14, Douglass Day, and the reason February is Black History Month), here's a selection of historical books by Black authors covering various aspects of Black history (mostly in the US) that you can download For Free, Legally And Easily!
Slave Narratives
This comprised a hugely influential genre of Black writing throughout the 1800s - memoirs of people born (or kidnapped) into slavery, their experiences, and their escapes. These were often published to fuel the abolitionist movement against slavery in the 1820s-1860s and are graphic and uncompromising about the horrors of slavery, the redemptive power of literacy, and the importance of abolitionist support.
Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass - 1845 - one of the most iconic autobiographies of the 1800s, covering his early life when he was enslaved in Maryland, and his escape to Massachusetts where he became a leading figure in the abolition movement.
Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom by William and Ellen Craft - 1860 - the memoir of a married couple's escape from slavery in Georgia, to Philadelphia and eventually to England. Ellen Craft was half-white, the child of her enslaver, but she could pass as white, and she posed as her husband William's owner to get them both out of the slave states. Harrowing, tense, and eminently readable - I honestly think Part 1 should be assigned reading in every American high school in the antebellum unit.
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs writing under the name Linda Brent - 1861 - writing specifically to reach white women and arguing for the need for sisterhood and solidarity between white and Black women, Jacobs writes of her childhood in slavery and how terrible it was for women and mothers even under supposedly "nice" masters including supposedly "nice" white women.
Twelve Years a Slave by Solomon Northup - 1853 - Born a free Black man in New York, Northup was kidnapped into slavery as an adult and sold south to Louisiana. This memoir of the brutality he endured was the basis of the 2013 Oscar-winning movie.
Early 1900s Black Life and Philosophy
Slavery is of course not the only aspect of Black history, and writers in the late 1800s and early 1900s had their own concerns, experiences, and perspectives on what it meant to be Black.
Up From Slavery by Booker T. Washington - 1901 - an autobiography of one of the most prominent African-American leaders and educators in the late 1800s/early 1900s, about his experiences both learning and teaching, and the power and importance of equal education. Race relations in the Reconstruction era Southern US are a major concern, and his hope that education and equal dignity could lead to mutual respect has... a long way to go still.
The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. Du Bois - 1903 - an iconic work of sociology and advocacy about the African-American experience as a people, class, and community. We read selections from this in Anthropology Theory but I think it should be more widely read than just assigned in college classes.
Darkwater: Voices from Within the Veil by W.E.B. Du Bois - 1920 - collected essays and poems on race, religion, gender, politics, and society.
A Negro Explorer at the North Pole by Matthew Henson - 1908 - Black history doesn't have to be about racism. Matthew Henson was a sailor and explorer and was the longtime companion and expedition partner of Robert Peary. This is his adventure-memoir of the expedition that reached the North Pole. (Though his descriptions of the Indigenous Greenlandic Inuit people are... really paternalistic in uncomfortable ways even when he's trying to be supportive.)
Poetry
Standard Ebooks also compiles poetry collections, and here are some by Black authors.
Langston Hughes - 1920s - probably the most famous poet of the Harlem Renaissance.
James Weldon Johnson - early 1900s through 1920s - tends to be in a more traditionalist style than Hughes, and he preferred the term for the 1920s proliferation of African-American art "the flowering of Negro literature."
Sarah Louisa Forten Purvis - 1830s - a Black abolitionist poet, this is more of a chapbook of her work that was published in newspapers than a full book collection. There are very common early-1800s poetry themes of love, family, religion, and nostalgia, but overwhelmingly her topic was abolition and anti-slavery, appealing to a shared womanhood.
Science Fiction
This is Black history to me - Samuel Delany's first published novel, The Jewels of Aptor, a sci-fi adventure from the early 60s that encapsulates a lot of early 60s thoughts and anxieties. New agey religion, forgotten technology mistaken for magic, psychic powers, nuclear war, post-nuclear society that feels more like a fantasy kingdom than a sci-fi world until they sail for the island that still has all the high tech that no one really knows how to use... it's a quick and entertaining read.

There are human activities in which both sides can win. War is not one of them. Either Ukraine wins this war or Russia does. Ukraine’s former foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba says bluntly that unless the current trajectory is changed, “we will lose this war”.
To be clear: this is still avoidable. Suppose the roughly four-fifths of Ukrainian territory still controlled by Kyiv gets military commitments from the west strong enough to deter any further Russian advances, secure large-scale investment in economic reconstruction, encourage Ukrainians to return from abroad to rebuild their country, and allow for stable, pro-European politics and reform. In five years, the country joins the EU, and then, under a new US administration, starts the process of entering Nato. Most of Ukraine becomes a sovereign, independent, free country, firmly anchored in the west.
The loss of a large amount of territory, the suffering of at least 3.5 million Ukrainians living under Russian occupation and the toll of dead, maimed and traumatised would amount to a terrible cost. This would not be the complete victory Ukrainians have hoped for and deserve; but it would still be a victory for Ukraine and a historic defeat for Russia. A majority of Ukrainians could come to see it as such. In polling the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) has shared with me in advance, Ukrainians are asked if to end the war they could (albeit with difficulty) accept the combination of economic reconstruction and EU and Nato membership for the current territory. In just the past six months, the proportion saying yes has jumped from 47% to 64%.
However, to get to this outcome with Donald Trump in the White House would require a European coalition-of-the-willing to make security commitments of a size and boldness not seen so far. There’s a growing understanding of this among European leaders, but the democratic politics in most European countries are miles away from empowering them to do it. To try to persuade Europeans to support the necessary policies, but also to understand the consequences if – as seems most likely – they don’t do so in time, the question we have to ask is: what if Russia wins?
If Russia wins, we should realistically expect the following consequences for Ukraine, Europe, the United States and world peace. Ukraine would be defeated, divided, demoralised and depopulated. The money would not come in to reconstruct the country; instead, another wave of people would leave it. The politics would become rancorous, with a strong anti-western trend. New possibilities for Russian disinformation and political destabilisation would emerge. Necessary reforms would stall, and hence also progress towards EU membership.
Europe as a whole would see an escalation of the hybrid war that Russia is already waging against it, still largely unnoticed by most blithely Christmas-shopping west Europeans. Not a week passes without some incident: a Russian destroyer fires a flare at a German military helicopter; there are exploding DHL packages, sabotage on the French railways, an arson attack on a Ukrainian-owned business in east London; undersea cables in the Baltic Sea are cut; there’s a credible death threat to a top German arms manufacturer. Not all can definitely be traced back to Moscow, but many can.
Full spectrum hybrid warfare includes election interference. In Georgia, the election was rigged. In the Moldovan EU referendum, about 9% of the votes were directly bought by Russia, according to the president, Maia Sandu. In Romania, the first round of the presidential election will be re-run, because a court found large-scale violation of campaigning rules on TikTok. “Ah, that’s eastern Europe!” cries the complacent Christmas shopper in Madrid, Rome or Düsseldorf. But the head of Germany’s domestic security service recently warned that Russia will try to interfere in next February’s German general election, which is hardly marginal to the future of Europe.
This week we saw Vladimir Putin again supremely confident in his annual end-of-year marathon press conference cum Call-the-Tsar phone-in, despite the recent Ukrainian assassination of his WMD general. His is now a war economy, dependent on military production for sustaining growth, and a dictatorship defined by confrontation with the west. It would be beyond naive to hope that diplomacy can achieve some magical moment when Putin’s Russia will suddenly become “satisfied” with an outcome in Ukraine, and return to peacetime business as usual. When Nato planners say we should be ready for possible Russian aggression against Nato territory by 2029, they are not simply peddling horror stories so as to increase military budgets.
Maga voters in the United States may say “well, what’s all that to us? You Europeans look after yourselves! We have to worry about China”. But Russia is now working more closely than ever with China, North Korea and Iran. Putin may be indicted by the international criminal court, but he still travels half the world as a welcome guest. He himself has talked of a new “global majority” and “the formation of a completely new world order”. In that new order, war and territorial conquest are entirely acceptable instruments of policy, on a continuum with poisoning, sabotage, disinformation and election interference. Victory for Russia in Ukraine will encourage China to step up its pressure on Taiwan and North Korea its needling of South Korea.
That brings us to the most serious consequence of all: nuclear proliferation. Remember that Ukraine voluntarily gave up its nuclear weapons in 1994, in return for security assurances from the US, the UK and Russia – and then got hammered by one of the powers that promised it security. In the latest KIIS polling, 73% of Ukrainians support Ukraine “restoring nuclear weapons”. Remarkably, 46% say they would do so even if the west imposed sanctions and stopped aid. In effect, Ukrainians are saying to the west: if you won’t defend us, we’ll [expletive deleted] do it ourselves. On recent visits to Ukraine I’ve been told several times, “It’s Nato or nukes!” But this is not just about Ukraine. Vulnerable countries around the world, also looking at what is happening in the Middle East, will draw the same conclusion. The more countries – and possibly non-state actors – acquire nuclear weapons, the more certain it is that one day they will be used.
In the German election, Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been shamelessly and shamefully trying to exploit the fear of nuclear war for electoral advantage over his chief rival, the Christian Democrat Friedrich Merz. In fact, it is precisely the consequences of the west’s self-deterrence for fear of Russian nuclear escalation in Ukraine, personified by Scholz and skilfully exploited by Putin, that are increasing the likelihood of nuclear proliferation and therefore the long-term risk of nuclear war.
The conclusion is clear, and depressingly familiar. European democracies’ reluctance to pay a high price now means that the world will pay an even higher price later.

All the talk today about a man having the luxury of dating younger while getting older to delay growing up (marriage, kids, etc.) reminds me of George Clooney. He had a short marriage when he was in his late 20s/early 30s (before his career blew up) and then was known as the most eligible bachelor and even made bets with people like Nicole Kidman and Michelle Pfieffer that he'd never get married again. He dated many women, some of which were even older than him, but the majority were not. He became engaged when he was 53 and his future wife 36. On paper, it seems like she's "old" but he is 17 years older than her. He became a first-time father at the ripe old age of 56. He could do this because he is a man. Who did not have to worry about aging like a woman. Or having children in his 50s.
Hollywood (and the world in general) is full of stories like that. Men have the luxury of time that women don’t in that situation. They have the luxury of getting their shit together (or not) on their own timeline. It’s sad and unfair but also true, and I have seen this happen in my real life with friends.
I feel a whole rant, or at least stream of consciousness, brewing about the ways in which people of childbearing age who wish to experience that are in just such a no-win situation, especially in the public eye. Voice that you want it and you may get labelled desperate or traditional or whatever. Voice that you don’t and you’re attacked as a threat to society or immature. It makes it so hard to have discussions (eg in relation to TTPD or Taylor’s discography at large) because it’s so fraught and involves all kinds of sociological constructs. And again: it’s something that isn’t given a second thought for men.
#I’m old enough to remember when Clooney kid man and pfeiffer were regularly interviewed about their bet#I was a kid and even I was like ‘how come it’s funny for him as a guy but no one is joking the same way about the ladies’#once again: Taylor was very brave for even broaching what she did#because it’s such a common experience as a woman#and could so easily be weaponized against her#from all sides#and she put her truth out there anyway#and now o am going to bed for real

decided to draw some OCs based on the vibes i got from my songs! theyre both university freshman - illia is a law student and Z is a sociology major, Z is new and town and looking to start a brand new punk band after their old one disbanded, and it turns out illia has an amazing voice. unfortunately, she was raised in a super strict household and hates the idea of doing anything that might distract from her studies. Z knows that if they can convince illia to join, they can totally win battle of the bands alongside their new drummer ezra - who works at the campus cafe - and their new guitarist melek - who Z met at roller derby - but who knows what kind of feelings are going to get in the way when illia finally gains independence and dives head first into the punk scene? stay tuned to find out more.....

I love reading your asks, so I wanted to ask you if you had any favorite female characters from Rik and Ade projects?
Helloooo! Thank you, that's so sweet. ❤️ Let's see... I'm going to single out some TYO characters specifically and then talk more generally. This post is absolutely going to become a big, incoherent mess. 😂
Sue from Sociology is my favourite minor TYO character. Don't get me wrong, I love Helen the Murderess too, but there's something that draws me to Sue. To be fair, I'm just seriously weak for Jennifer Saunders in general, and she's basically done up as a female Rick here, if Rick was actually cool. I like inserting her into fanfic sometimes (okay, once... but I have plans). She's very much a background character for the majority of Interesting, but Interesting itself is one of the first (and only, possibly the only?) time there are lots of women in a TYO scene at once, even if they're not getting to do much. Shout out to Dawn's Christian who gets crushed by the gigantic sandwich too, of course! (As an aside, I find it funny that both Jennifer and Dawn got to strangle/smother Mike on the sofa on different occasions.)
Vyvyan's mum. Pauline Melville pops up a couple of other times in TYO as well, and she's just very good whenever she does. I believe she gave French & Saunders a bit of guidance when they were all on the standup circuit. Vyv's mum is a great character because she's just SO awful. Let female characters be awful! She's so spiky and sharp in every way, and she's probably the only semi-developed female character who appears on the show. I think letting the audience meet her gives Vyvyan a bit of texture and depth - sure, we could imagine any family background for any of them, but we're being told THIS HERE is Vyvyan's. Poor Vyv. Pauline Melville herself, of course, is a prize-winning writer now! The dream.
The devil and her condemned soul is one of my favourite TYO cutaway segments. The condemned soul is Helen Atkinson-Wood, who is most well-known for playing Mrs Miggins in Blackadder the Third. She also has a small role in the Comic Strip episode Consuela (and possibly others, but I looked up the cast list to that one yonks ago because it's my favourite). I wonder if Lise wrote this sketch, considering the subject matter. Either way, Dawn and Helen's delivery is great, especially the faux discrete way Dawn says "period pains". I hope it put stuffy men's heckles up.
Aside from TYO, Jen and Dawn were often the only female presence in the Comic Strip episodes, particularly the earlier ones. Of the first two series, Dawn wrote Summer School and Jen wrote Slags - neither were standout episodes of their series, the kind often recalled today, but with Slags especially, the female characters within them were given more agency and stake in the plot than usual. Jen played five different characters in Happy Families in 1985 - a little gem written by Ben and also starring Ade.
I'd like to give a little shout out to Helen Lederer, who popped up a lot in Rik and Ade's - and French & Saunders' - comic output, while never really being given her own opportunity to shine on TV. Oh, and I'd also like to give a shout out to Marsha Fitzalan, who played Sarah B'Stard in The New Statesman - she did such a good job of playing an intensely flawed, funny female character. There are countless male characters who are basically terrible people - I mean, Alan B'Stard for one - and it's vital women are also allowed to be that awful in comedy.
Comedy has always been a pretty male sphere. Even these days, there are definitely still men Ricky Gervais who believe women can't be funny. Misogyny is still massively prevalent in society. Male comics attract female attention; female comics attract male abuse. That's a simplification and generalisation, of course, but it's broadly true. And I don't see younger generations of men getting better with this, to be honest. Actually, I see them getting worse (thanks, Andrew Tate). Sorry to be all doom and gloom!
When Rik and Ade started out in comedy, women getting to play characters other than wives or the like - that is, straight characters and caricatures there largely for the male characters to bounce off of for their laughs - was still uncommon. Despite the existence of successful female comics across the pond like Lucille Ball, and beloved 1970s sitcom The Good Life having a main cast split evenly gender-wise (I know Richard Briers technically had first credit, but Penelope Keith as Margo Leadbetter was absolutely the funniest of the four of them), there was a genuine belief that women couldn't (and maybe shouldn't) be doing comedy.
Women like Victoria Wood were pushing boundaries in important ways around the time of the alternative comedy boom by writing specifically about women (and, quite often, northern women - which I personally think is important, since Last of the Summer Wine had such a chokehold on portraying almost all of its female characters as ostensibly the same). Her sitcom dinnerladies was both melancholic and hilarious. Her sketch shows and other comic output, quite often featuring Julie Walters (her friend and muse), Celia Imrie, and many others, were all written entirely by her. She was also a gifted pianist and wrote several comic songs.
All of this is to say, Victoria Wood definitely helped pave the way for French & Saunders. She even referred to herself as an alternative comedian in her material. But honestly, I don't think it was until much later that women stopped being regularly restricted to straight roles in comedies created by men (which, of course, most comedies were). This was part of why Absolutely Fabulous, written by Jen, was such a breath of fresh air in the 1990s. For once, every single major character was a woman - men were the scarcity! And Jen has mentioned before that producers would constantly pressure her to write more roles for men. Meanwhile, we can observe that Girls on Top (dubbed the female TYO, which is... sort of true and sort of not), which Dawn and Jen starred in with Ruby Wax and Tracey Ullman in the 1980s, isn't very well-known today. I'm not 100% sure how well it was received at the time, but clearly it wasn't as popular as TYO had been before it. Ruby Wax and Tracey Ullman have both also had successful careers in comedy, but I'd argue that's mainly thanks (particularly in Tracy's case) to opportunities in America.
So I'm not saying women never got to be the funny (also I'm just talking about the UK), but the fact is: if your comedy has a completely/majority male cast, with women only popping up in supporting roles or in guest appearances, it's obvious which characters are going to be better developed, more beloved, and just funnier. I mean, even the Vicar of Dibley, which was obviously written for Dawn and showcases her comic prowess, features a supporting cast of funny men (there was also Emma Chambers as Alice and Liz Smith as Leticia - before she was killed off - but the women were outnumbered by the men). I get that this perhaps fits with the idea of a tiny, slightly backwards village in Oxfordshire - and the fact Geraldine was a female vicar shocking these men was very important to the premise - but still.
We know certain men just REALLY struggle at writing women, too, so they've either done a really bad job or just avoided trying altogether. I do have an example for this, but I don't want to name them since I do love the show they created - it's just, y'know, writing women is definitely not their strong suit! And I'm really not trying to poo poo any shows here by pointing this out. I'm just making observations. All of these comedies I'm referencing here are very old now.
So! To get back to where I started with this!
I love that Lise Mayer was one of the writers of The Young Ones. In some ways, the fact one of the writers was a woman feels pretty incredible for 1982. At the same time, though, it's not surprising that she's often the forgotten one when people talk about who wrote TYO.
Rik and Ade were/are feminists, and it obviously wasn't their fault as individuals that comedy was so male - comedy was also restrictive in other ways before them. In terms of social class and political attitudes, they were definitely something refreshing and new. That said, it wouldn't be until later, with people like Caroline Aherne (who really changed the fundamentals of the sitcom genre with The Royle Family), that working class voices who weren't fucking Bernard Manning actually got some notice in comedy. And I've not even mentioned race in this ramble. If comedy was male, it was even more pale. There were comedies starring black and Asian comics in the 1980s and 1990s that started to break through - The Lenny Henry Show, Chef!, Desmond's, The Real McCoy, Goodness Gracious Me - but there's no denying BAME people, BAME women especially, have had to struggle a lot for a voice in comedy. Comedy is more diverse today than it was 40 years ago. There has been progress. But it's absolutely still male dominated, and still very white, at the top.
Rik was pegged as the golden boy of the alternative comedy movement, and he was and is undoubtedly remembered for so many different comedies. But in terms of pure success and fame? Actually, I think Dawn and Jen have been the standouts of their cohort. I don't think anyone would've predicted this 40 odd years ago - I mean, Christ, Rik had to speak up just to ensure they got equal pay at The Comic Strip. The boys were given their chance to shine first, there's no doubt about that. But it was Dawn and Jen who were the subjects of a BBC documentary last Christmas.
...Maybe there is hope for funny women, after all.
#asks#anon#me rambling#there were so many women i wanted to name drop here but just couldn't#like seriously there are too many#i haven't even scratched the surface of the 80s and 90s never mind the last 30 years#i mean without getting into the extremely important political context that is obviously at the heart of derry girls#i love the representation of teenage girls as weird and cringy and sometimes terrible and not these ethereal intimidating unknowable beings#which is what the world seems to have universally agreed they are#as well as of course being silly and hysterical and having dumb interests#ARGH i won't go off on a rant about teenage girlhood and misogyny in the tags#also i realise i didn't exactly address the ask but tbh i think just addressing the women in rik and ade's catalogue would be more limiting#than the answer already is 😂

Carol Diann Johnson was born in the Bronx, New York City, on July 17, 1935, to John Johnson, a subway conductor, and Mabel (Faulk), a nurse. While Carroll was still an infant, the family moved to Harlem, where she grew up except for a brief period in which her parents had left her with an aunt in North Carolina. She attended Music and Art High School, and was a classmate of Billy Dee Williams. In many interviews about her childhood, Carroll recalls her parents' support, and their enrolling her in dance, singing, and modeling classes. By the time Carroll was 15, she was modeling for Ebony. "She also began entering television contests, including Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, under the name Diahann Carroll." After graduating from high school, she attended New York University, where she majored in sociology, "but she left before graduating to pursue a show-business career, promising her family that if the career did not materialize after two years, she would return to college.
Carroll's big break came at the age of 18, when she appeared as a contestant on the DuMont Television Network program, Chance of a Lifetime, hosted by Dennis James. On the show, which aired January 8, 1954, she took the $1,000 top prize for a rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein song, "Why Was I Born?" She went on to win the following four weeks. Engagements at Manhattan's Café Society and Latin Quarter, nightclubs soon followed.
Carroll's film debut was a supporting role in Carmen Jones (1954), as a friend to the sultry lead character played by Dorothy Dandridge. That same year, she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her role in the Broadway musical, House of Flowers. A few years later, she played Clara in the film version of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess (1959), but her character's singing parts were dubbed by opera singer Loulie Jean Norman. The following year, Carroll made a guest appearance in the series Peter Gunn, in the episode "Sing a Song of Murder" (1960). In the next two years, she starred with Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, and Joanne Woodward in the film Paris Blues (1961) and won the 1962 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical (the first time for a Black woman) for portraying Barbara Woodruff in the Samuel A. Taylor and Richard Rodgers musical No Strings. Twelve years later, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her starring role alongside James Earl Jones in the film Claudine (1974), which part had been written specifically for actress Diana Sands (who had made guest appearances on Julia as Carroll's cousin Sara), but shortly before filming was to begin, Sands learned she was terminally ill with cancer. Sands attempted to carry on with the role, but as filming began, she became too ill to continue and recommended her friend Carroll take over the role. Sands died in September 1973, before the film's release in April 1974.
Carroll is known for her titular role in the television series Julia (1968-71), which made her the first African-American actress to star in her own television series who did not play a domestic worker. That role won her the Golden Globe Award for Best TV Star – Female for its first year, and a nomination for an Primetime Emmy Award in 1969. Some of Carroll's earlier work also included appearances on shows hosted by Johnny Carson, Judy Garland, Merv Griffin, Jack Paar, and Ed Sullivan, and on The Hollywood Palace variety show. In 1984, Carroll joined the nighttime soap opera Dynasty at the end of its fourth season as the mixed-race jet set diva Dominique Deveraux, Blake Carrington's half-sister. Her high-profile role on Dynasty also reunited her with her schoolmate Billy Dee Williams, who briefly played her onscreen husband Brady Lloyd. Carroll remained on the show and made several appearances on its short-lived spin-off, The Colbys until she departed at the end of the seventh season in 1987. In 1989, she began the recurring role of Marion Gilbert in A Different World, for which she received her third Emmy nomination that same year.
In 1991, Carroll portrayed Eleanor Potter, the doting, concerned, and protective wife of Jimmy Potter (portrayed by Chuck Patterson), in the musical drama film The Five Heartbeats (1991), also featuring actor and musician Robert Townsend and Michael Wright. She reunited with Billy Dee Williams again in 1995, portraying his character's wife Mrs. Greyson in Lonesome Dove: The Series. The following year, Carroll starred as the self-loving and deluded silent movie star Norma Desmond in the Canadian production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical version of the film Sunset Boulevard. In 2001, Carroll made her animation debut in The Legend of Tarzan, in which she voiced Queen La, ruler of the ancient city of Opar.
In 2006, Carroll appeared in several episodes the television medical drama Grey's Anatomy as Jane Burke, the demanding mother of Dr. Preston Burke. From 2008 to 2014, she appeared on USA Network's series White Collar in the recurring role of June, the savvy widow who rents out her guest room to Neal Caffrey. In 2010, Carroll was featured in UniGlobe Entertainment's breast cancer docudrama titled 1 a Minute and appeared as Nana in two Lifetime movie adaptations of Patricia Cornwell’s novels: At Risk and The Front.
In 2013, Carroll was present on stage at the 65th Primetime Emmy Awards to briefly speak about being the first African-American nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award. She was quoted as saying about Kerry Washington, nominated for Scandal, "She better get this award."
Carroll was a founding member of the Celebrity Action Council, a volunteer group of celebrity women who served the women's outreach of the Los Angeles Mission, working with women in rehabilitation from problems with alcohol, drugs, or prostitution. She helped to form the group along with other female television personalities including Mary Frann, Linda Gray, Donna Mills, and Joan Van Ark.
Carroll was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. She said the diagnosis "stunned" her, because there was no family history of breast cancer, and she had always led a healthy lifestyle. She underwent nine weeks of radiation therapy and had been clear for years after the diagnosis. She frequently spoke of the need for early detection and prevention of the disease. She died from cancer at her home in West Hollywood, California, on October 4, 2019, at the age of 84. Carroll also had dementia at the time of her death, though actor Marc Copage, who played her character's son on Julia, said that she did not appear to show serious signs of cognitive decline as late as 2017. A memorial service was held in November 24, 2019, at the Helen Hayes Theater in New York City.

What majors and minors do you think Sirius and Remus would have in a muggle or magic college au?
Also curious for any other marauders era characters as well!
Thank you for the ask @gods-graveyard. As I'm based in the UK I have absolutely no idea how the US college system works - the major and minor thing has always baffled me a little bit!
But I'll give you what I think they'd do based on the UK Muggle university system.
Remus - English Literature or Social Sciences - something like Anthropology or Sociology. The former because of his love of books, the later as he is genuinely motivated to understand people and is naturally empathetic.
Sirius - Law. I think Sirius is extremely intelligent but would want to do something practical that would allow him to really push and test himself. I think he is extremely motivated by a sense of social justice and so law to me seems like a good fit (defense not prosecution of course).
James - Psychology and Criminology. I think James would also want to do something with a practical application. He is deeply interested in other people, and would want to better understand how and why people turn to crime.
Peter - Political Science. Peter is much smarter than other's give him credit for. I think he would be attracted to a subject that would enable him to be around people who were driven and motivated to obtain positions of political influence. However, unlike the others, his motivations are more autocratic.
Lily - Biochemistry. Lily is highly intelligent. I can see her working in something related to virology or immunology, and seeking ways to cure infectious diseases. This girl could win a Nobel Prize.
Bonus Snape - Chemistry. For utterly obvious and apparent reasons.
I hope this was interesting! For someone who has never given Muggle AU stuff any thought this really intrigued me and sparked my imagination.

The State Bird Initiative: New Jersey (#3) - Results
Another week, another poll! And this one...this one had the results in super fast. So, we're gonna get right into it, as well as the personal choices by the SBI. But OK, which species does Tumblr think should be the State Bird of New Jersey?
Which of the following should be the state bird of New Jersey, the Garden State?
Look...I'd be lying if I said I didn't vote for that one, too.
SBI Elected State Bird of New Jersey: Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla)
The American Goldfinch (Spinus tristis) has been replaced by popular vote by the Laughing Gull (Leucophaeus atricilla) in the latest polls! And there's a part of me that wonders if this is for the meme...and there's a part of me that thinks this actually makes sense.
Read the original post here if you want my rationale, but...yeah, I stand by this being a good choice. NJ is a coastal state with a long coastline and a strong beach culture, to the point where "the Shore" is a recognized area in the state with an international reputation. And yes, while other shorebirds could be associated with the state, the Laughing Gull is essentially the only one whose breeding population heavily depends on its Jersey population. Plus, it's a recognizable and iconic bird with a known presence, and could easily be associated with the state it's been selected for. I can dig it. Just sayin'. And yeah, this is the bird chosen as a personal choice by the SBI as well. If you'd like to see the other personal choices from the SBI, stick around after the jump! And if this is all you were waiting for, then no worries! Check out Georgia's entry and give it a vote while you can!
The State Birds Initiative Personal Pick - New Jersey (#3)
State Game Bird of New Jersey (SBI): Brant (Branta bernicla)
Wait...WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? I never brought this bird up as a contender for State Bird? So, what is it doing here? Well, I never brought this guy up for State Bird because they don't breed in New Jersey, and honestly couldn't come up with a solid argument for it to be in that position. However, it was always a contender for State Game Bird, because New Jersey is home to the largest population of this goose, the Brant (Branta bernicla), on the eastern coast, with other concentrations being in Virginia and Rhode Island. But they'll get different birds for this category.
Now, time to talk further about what a State Game Bird is. Game birds are not a single taxonomic classification; rather, they're a sociological one. These are birds prioritized for hunting, usually for culinary purposes, if not just for sport. While they come from a few taxa, the vast majority of game birds belong to orders Galliformes (chickens, pheasants, quail, etc.) and Anseriformes (ducks and geese). The Brant represents our first member of the latter in this category! New jersey is known for its Brant hunting, and the state has major regulations during its Brant hunting season for conservation purposes. I could've put the Snow Goose (Cher caerulenscens) here as well, since New Jersey actually prioritizes hunting of this overpopulated bird...but the purpose of this is to promote birds of conservation interest that have a significant role in the state, and the Brant fits this a lot better than the Snow Goose. With that, let's move on!
State Raptor of New Jersey (SBI): Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonicus)
The Gray Ghost wins the category of State Raptor of New Jersey! This one, of course, I put in the original post and poll, and it unfortunately didn't get far at all. Not sure why, since it's the logo for the New Jersey Audubon Society, it represents a major ecosystem in the state, and it's generally a pretty cool bird. But, hey, that's the price of democracy. Either way, the Northern Harrier (Circus hudsonicus) is a charismatic raptor of conservation concern, and a generally pretty neat bird all around. Check out the original post for more details on this guy, but for now, we'll move on!
SBI's Big Fifty - New Jersey: Saltmarsh Sparrow (Ammospiza caudacuta)
So, in my original post, I mentioned that the Saltmarsh Sparrow (Ammospiza caudacuta) wasn't a great fit for State Bird due to its similarity to other sparrows, and that would be difficult for the average citizen to parse out. A sparrow is a sparrow is a sparrow, right? Well, not to birders it ain't! This is a pretty big bird for any birder's life list, mine included, making it an important focus for that community. So, in order to give the sparrow its day in court, the Saltmarsh Sparrow wins the prize for New Jersey's representative in SBI's Big Fifty, adding it to the countrywide scavenger hunt that this list represents. Sorry, Massachusetts, I know you could've had this one, too. I'll give you a neat one, I promise.
State Conservation Focus of New Jersey (SBI): Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus)
OK, so, the Conservation Focus of New Jersey is sort of disingenuous in this entry, since the bird is far less of a focus than its habitat, but I'll use it as the symbol of the habitat. The Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) is an accessible symbol for the average person to see when going to the ecologically significant (and always in danger) New Jersey Pine Barrens, also representing a larger community of birds with which it tends to be geographically associated. But more than that, the real symbol of the Pine Barrens isn't quite as accessible. For that reason, there really should be two focuses for the Pine Barrens, one for bird people, and one for ecologists. And if you know anything about the New Jersey Pine Barrens, I think you know what the other symbol is.
Now, to be fair, the Pine Barrens Tree Frog (Dryophytes andersonii) is, despite the name, not endemic to the New Jersey Pine Barrens. Instead, it can be found in the Carolinas and the Florida Panhandle, all in isolated areas and...well, pine barrens. But, its populations are decreasing in size, with the Georgia population already extirpated, and is a species of conservation concern. Frogs are, of course, less easy to spot than birds, especially nocturnal ones like the tree frog. So, it's not a great public symbol of the forests as a result, but is still an important inhabitant of the New Jersey Pine Barrens. So, consider this another conservation focus endorsed by SBI. And for the record, it's actually the state frog of North Carolina, so it hasn't been completely shafted!
And with that, we've reached the end of the personal choices by the SBI for ornithological state representatives! Be sure to check out the Georgia poll currently running; still a day or two for votes to be counted!
See you next time, and happy birding!

What do you think about users having to pay $100-200 for statuses that were once free by winning them?
I'm split on this one. On one hand I prefer the idea of statuses to be earned/won through competitions, but on the other hand I also get that sites need funding and it's a sort of sponsor system with a status to show off in return for financially supporting the sites. But I'd rather see an actual sponsor option, not a sponsor-purchase thing like the paid statuses.
For a vast majority of the WoX userbase these sums are big, relative to our income and financial assets. Many of us simply can't afford it. Depending on where and how you live, $200-$300 is half of the monthly rent and bills. It is for me, and at the moment my income barely covers my expenses. I'm fortunate, I have financial support and savings so I'm not at any risk of financial disaster (unless I deliberately create one) but I'm also very aware that a lot of people don't have that.
On WoX, having a purchased status is like owning and showing off a very expensive purse. It's an open statement that you can afford something that most other people can't. Not everyone that will see it that way, but some will and that can cause resentment. I'm not one of them: if you want a status, can afford it and find it worth the money, I say go for it. Your business is your business and regardless of what I think about it, it's not a problem for me.
That said, financial status is a sensitive matter for a lot of people. To some people, the appearance of wealth is so important that they prioritise expensive items for appearance's sake over actual daily needs - people like that are vulnerable and might choose to buy a status instead of paying their rent, which will hurt them in the long run. To other people, often those who grew up in poverty, seeing other people showing off their wealth (intentionally or not) can be a constant reminder of their own financial status. Financial status is closely linked to social status and money essentially equals social value, so being reminded of your poverty feels like someone's pointing out your low social value and saying you're worth less than they are. Of course that is not how people should be valued, but it's something we're taught by society from a very early age so we will often perceive it that way whether we agree with it or not.
Maybe I'm overthinking this and maybe I'm making a mountain out of a molehill, but I also think it's a discussion worth having. In a community, sociological aspects matter.

“Y/Nnie come on!” Your friend, Jeongin, grabbed your hand and dragged you further into the grand building.
“Hyung!” Jeongin practically leapt on the stunningly beautiful man as soon as he came near him, “I’ve missed you so much!”

The Terror of a Vulnerable Young Male in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
Major spoilers ahead. This isn't a film review; it's a brief analytical essay that you'll need to have watched the film first to actually understand.
It is perhaps impossible not to analyze a film in the context of its time. And I, watching the new Harry Potter spin-off, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, found myself analyzing it in the vein of terrorist attacks, namely school shooters. Certainly, this seems a stretch at first. Certainly, I questioned if I were overanalyzing. I leaped between wondering if the writers had intended this, to thinking that I had better peel back on these crazy sociological constructs of mine. I was surely reading too much into a children's action-adventure movie, wasn't I? But whether purposeful or not, I undoubtedly think the problems of one's time can subconsciously find their way into a story whether the writer realizes or not. For this movie, the character I am most concerned with is Credence. For this analysis, his name is quite apt. I will then turn to the two people, Mary Lou and Graves, who try to pull him in a direction of their choosing, as well as Tina, the one character who seems actually concerned for his well-being even before things blow up.
Credence is a young man with a difficult upbringing. He is being raised by a woman with no familial connection to him, and no warmth at all. This adoptive mother, Mary Lou, simply wants someone to triumph her cause against magic for her. She wants him, in short, to believe. As she does. A frightening number of parents in the real world also want children who come to the same conclusions as they do, and I found her character to be a reflection of this. The greatest thing certain people desire to pass along to their children is whom to hate. (In the real world, you can substitute many things for wizards here: gays, Jews, blacks, etc.) She wants him to support this vendetta she has against magic, but in doing so, it creates much self-hate in him, which is a very dangerous quality. When he does something she finds wrong, she punishes him by beating him with a belt (his own) until he bleeds. This abuse creates damage in a person far worse than the physical pain. It creates fear. It closes off a person to the world, makes them distrustful. It opens them up to a terrorist, extremist creed. It's a terrible thing.
All these factors combine to make Credence vulnerable and potentially dangerous, similar to a would-be school shooter who might also have tough family situations and a lack of resources (or affectionate love) to pull them back from the edge. In Fantastic Beasts, this dangerous quality is represented by the Obscurus. It is a rather tenuous thing, always shifting its shape. It is hard to grasp with one's eye. It is darkest black. Credence is infected by this magical beast, which causes him to lash out and wreak havoc on the city and muggles (even leading to a death). These random acts are, of course, of terror. Credence is an analogue for the young terrorists of our world. The ones who are unhappy and alienated by society. They are ignored and looked down upon and no help is proffered them by an ineffectual mental health care system, by ineffective friends and family that abet them or suspect nothing. Such lone wolves are only noticed when things go too far.
These vulnerable young men not getting their due in society, men without a good future, are liable to being whispered in the ear by men such as Mr. Graves, an extremist dark wizard (like Voldemort, he is another Hitler analogue). Graves wants a war between humans and wizards which of course he thinks wizards will win. That way wizards do not have to hide anymore under the Harry Potter universe's law of secrecy to muggles. The world can be theirs solely. They will be the dominant species. He uses Credence while he thinks he is a squib--read: useless to his ambitions. But once he realizes that Credence actually has a lot of power, and only had the appearance of a squib because of the Obscurus acting as a check, then Graves wants to convert him to his cause. Again, vulnerable young men are quite susceptible to these messages. Many neo-Nazis and white supremacists, or the alt-right, sink their claws into men of Credence's age who aren't experienced or knowledgeable enough yet to smell bullshit from peddlers of fear and hate. These young men haven't yet figured out a way out of the woods of the rough transition between adolescence and adulthood. It's a very confusing time in one's life. Hateful men like Graves know this. Men like Steve Bannon know this too.
So how do we stop a vulnerable young man from turning to an evil cause, or committing some heinous act against humanity that he cannot take back? Enter Tina, stage right. Tina is an auror, a wizard crime fighter, essentially. But in her interaction with Credence in the past, she goes rogue and attacks his adoptive mother Mary Lou because she wants to stop the abuse he suffers at her hands. In this rogue role she plays, she is more like the CPS. And in that, she represents an ineffectual government system. For, of course, the CPS is filled with many noble-minded individuals who mean the best, but, of course, terrible family situations are not so easily resolved. And many social workers mean the best but they cannot help in all situations. They are overworked, understaffed, and underfunded. And of course there are many mental health professionals who are also noble-minded and want to help. But, again, not everyone has healthcare providing mental health services, nor has our society always stressed or encouraged getting help. And so the government can be so toothless and ineffective, whereas the alt-right has teeth.
There are two devils on each shoulder of the vulnerable young male, and few angels in sight.
Tina is the one person who actually tried to help him for his sake, and not for her own. Not so she could have a child hate whom she hates like Mary Lou and anti-gay Christians such as the Westboro Baptist Church. Not so she could have a pawn for her extremist cause like Graves and the alt-right. No, she wanted to better his life. She showed him kindness when he was ignored by the rest of society. She wanted to step in to get him the suitable help before things boiled over into an attack. In short, kindness and mental health services are what we need in society today for our vulnerable young men. We need more people like Tina. We need them so that when a man with the name Credence is angry and scared enough to do something horrific, and goes looking for something to believe in, onto dark paths, he'll have a gentle hand to pull him back into the light.

thinking about andrew doing sociology, like his major is criminal justice so he does a lot of criminology modules but there a lot of the same stuff focusing on policing and hell will freeze over before andrew minyard joins the police, but then its his fourth year and theres some scheduling conflict so andrew gets put on a sociology module instead, the lectures are quite boring but he starts to find that the readings are actually really interesting, andrew finds himself sitting down to do the required readings then spiraling down a rabbit hole chasing all the different theorists and how they link to each other, he starts seeing sociology everywhere he looks and god if that isnt annoying, but kevin will say something a bit off and suddenly andrew is thinking about bourdieu and cultural capital, neil complains about how much people seem to watch each other and andrews mind connects the dots to foucault, nicky confides in andrew that he feels like hes acting a lot of the time putting on a show for everyone that hes constantly shifting for his audience and goffman's dramaturgical model is flashing through his mind, and then it gets to the end of term and andrews doing his essay and he remembers everything but he still finds himself burdened with work, its not necessarily unpleasent, but its a new challenge to find evidence for what hes saying and read more and more articles and theres just so much he can cover in the essay that the word count doesnt seem long enough anymore, and maybe come next year andrew doesnt take another sociology module, he keeps playing exy with neil because thats what his junkie wants to do and hes not necessarily opposed to a future playing the bastard sport anymore, if only so he can see kevin on the other side of the court and absolutely demolish his chances at winning, maybe it helps to remember that the money he earns goes towards aarons future too, that hes paying for something tilda said aaron would never be able to achieve, but by the end of it all hes had a long career in exy, hes retiring but hes got so many years left, and isnt that a novel thought, neil is getting restless but hes found a new way to spend his time, he starts commentating and he swings by dan's to help out a few strikers, so andrew needs to find something else to do, and he goes back to college, he takes the classes and he does the work and he finds that sociology still intruiges him, theres so much to be studied so much to look at and its ever changing and it doesnt run out, maybe when he graduates with another degree he looks into postgrad and doing his own research, he takes up teaching a few classes on the side because thats kind of what you have to do when youre researching as a career, but he doesnt hate it too much, the students are annoying sometimes but theres something about helping people piece together the world thats interesting, and at the end of the day andrew gets to lie beside neil and tell him everything that happened today
and yeah something about andrew doing sociology

pookies ! zesty bitches
[name]: a burnt out competitive psychology major who somehow IS an academic genius? but they’re also one foul bastard. LOVES romance but is so unexperienced with love??? yosano’s no. 1 headache, loves random coffee trips and gets excited over whatever they’re interested in. lives with their roommate who is absolutely DONE with [name]'s shit. after arising to popularity due to their class standing the former year, they lately have been involved with the student council due to their wits. a little dumb sometimes, an ass too whenever having to deal with their emotions. stressed, running on coffee, and with sheer determination that’s slowly wavering, they try their best to survive. NEVER ask them about their love life, they will kill you. in exchange for yosano’s advice, they became her drinking buddy. enjoys fps and horror games, sometimes being invited by random people in the uni. their classes clash with some philosophy sections, leading to meeting fyodor, and becoming close enough to add him to the friend group. complains about everyone and everything and is very entertaining to listen, always has an opinion about everything but actually makes sense?? they’re really complicated that fyodor can’t make sense of them sometimes, although their intelligence is something to revel in, it’s very clear they’re incredibly mentally challenged.
yosano: [name]’s no. 1 confidant. a talented second year biology major, she’s sly, confident, and intimidating to those who have heard of her. she has heard every and all drama and has been involved in most of them. aside from her talent, she showcases her ruthlessness and confidence when involved in any drama. her methods of studying are questionable, but nobody in the friend group ever seems to question it. involvement in such drama led her to form a friendship with chuuya, whom the latter is as equally as immersed with drama as she is. the group knows she has unresolved beef with kajii, promising that she’ll find him the second the latter is unsuspended. she is mostly seen with ranpo, her childhood best friend. despite her imperturbable nature, she deeply cares about those she’s close with. rarely ever showing this side to anyone, as well as her friend group, she shows it in subtle ways. yosano also enjoys drinking with her friends after stressful weeks, especially finals, or when her professor becomes insufferable again. she is not really a responsible drinker, and spouts whatever comes to mind when drunk. when the opportunity arises, she invited [name] to go shopping with her, the former carrying most items (they can’t fight w yosano). the group is a bit scared of how composed and organized yosano is as a biology student.
chuuya: an ambiguous sociology major. dazai’s number one fucking hater, at least, that’s what almost everyone in uni knows him as. their rivalry rooted in high school, carrying over to university. despite his temperament, he’s incredibly hardworking and shockingly can speak french. the founding father of kys/die jokes. many think he’s unproblematic save for the ongoing problems he has with dazai, but just like yosano, is up to date with the drama in his school (but is never involved with it). is incredibly reasonable with his opinions about topics, making him admirable in his juniors’ eyes. takes pride in his academic abilities, knows his capabilities as a student and never takes it for granted. aware of his prideful demeanour, he puts it to good use to impress his colleagues. this leads him to being chosen often as a representative for competitions (he always wins). chuuya, however, isn’t immune to feelings of doubt, struggling enough that he masks it with this conceited behavior (although it isn’t noticeable by anyone other than the group and unironically dazai), which blossomed during the first year of high school. just like yosano, he enjoys drinking wine on occasion, the two discussing anything when both of them are free. he’s aware that he rose to popularity simply because of his once-close association with dazai, but this awareness doesn’t stop him from devoting himself to his studies and living up to his name. the group doesn’t really know the exact details of what happened between chuuya and dazai, but they know not to pry. he won’t admit it, but chuuya is incredibly thankful to have them.
sigma: an overly stressed student majoring in business management. a rich person, everyone's out for their money like calm down??? he's already struggling so much. incredibly patient, the mediator for chuuya and yosano's shenanigans. although they already inherited the casino their parents passed down to him. has unresolved drama between teruko, the latter bursting into his casino one day and deciding to disrupt its flow. promised that it was for her project, sigma had enough of her antics and tried to kick her out. embarrassed, the casino manager apologized as the casino sustained some damage. he vowed to never let teruko in again and refuses to speak to her when teruko tried to apologize. sigma, already stressed from the arduous paperwork from the casino, can barely keep up with his work from college. this leads to him staying off social media for long periods of time, only ever looking at the group chat and never responding. the group is already used to this, [name] reminding them to take care of themselves. she's a nervous, quaint person, who dislikes public speaking and confrontation from others. despite his anxious nature, his demeanor can switch from timid to a more stern, reserved persona when need be, and the group never fails to be amazed by this. he also deeply cares for the group despite her incredibly busy schedule, one of the most responsible people in the group, and chuuya trusts him enough to tell her what happened between dazai and him. their hard work pays off, as it should, as he lands himself in the top 10 of her block most of the time.
fyodor: a seemingly intimidating philosophy major with an academic record one can only dream of having. deemed a prodigy by many, he lands himself on the second or first spot on the list every release of the university's final examination results. of course, he can only maintain that first spot for long, as he's been overthrown by dazai for a number of semesters. as a playful response, fyodor and dazai banter with each other by outsmarting one another. people across the school think that this rivalry between two prodigies is serious, however, fyodor and dazai are actually good friends. despite his composed attitude, friends of his aren't immune to his random outbursts of energy, finding it endearing. he's also nikolai's childhood best friend. the professors think his intellect already covers enough to serve him well. has a minor in music, although only a selected few know about it. other than that, he enjoys watching anime (mostly what catches his eye, he cannot be persuaded to watch anime recommended to him) but enjoys reading books in a cafe more than anything. also knows any and every event going on in school, as professors and students confide in him for these announcements. he was the student council president in his high school but gave up his position as he had to move to 文学 uni. uncharacteristically, his professional nature doesn't extend to school drama, as he was aware of everything going on. the reason why yosano and chuuya know about these events is due to fyodor, who tells them everything whenever he has the opportunity, which is hidden so well that none could ever guess how yosano knew about the smallest things occurring within the school. also has dirt on professors but that's only for him to know. is also friends with everyone?? the student council doesn't interact with him for some reason. has a passion for writing and has a special interest in psychological horror (watches with [name] sometimes to analyze it afterwards)
ranpo: arguably the smartest person in the group when it comes to academics. experienced in everything criminology, he has been a favorite of many professors during high school due to his intellect. he was offered a scholarship, which landed him a spot in 文学 uni. known to have a rather eccentric personality, only a handful of people can handle his boastful and prideful remarks about his class standing. he's the loudest in the room, answering questions without even leaving a second to spare. despite this, he can be serious when the situation calls for it, which proves true during yosano's experience with kajii, and sigma's incident with teruko. he took it upon himself to prove the innocence of both his friends, and to this day, he tried to keep his involvement under wraps. he's known to be a bit unpredictable at times, switching from his immature behavior to something completely opposite of what he originally displays himself as. although he places himself as the top criminology student, he cannot do basic tasks for shit, which is why he is almost around yosano most of the time. this becomes a habit, yosano having to deal with his inability to do basic things, with ranpo occasionally asking his other friends for help when she's not around. in exchange, he happily helps them with their homework, landing beside sigma most of the time. he claims his great memory and his amazing intellect come from his sweet tooth, which also enables his childish nature immediately. was also once an academic rival of dazai's, and also fyodor's during his first year. although many students find him annoying, they cannot deny that he is a prodigy at what he does. you wouldn't know of his true capabilities if you aren't his friend. his arrogant and puerile exterior lures you into the thought that you can't become friends with him with that mindset.
❥ masterlist
𝐓𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐀!
ranpo and yosano work at the cat cafe prof. fukuzawa secretly manages, and that's mostly where [name], fyodor, and sigma hang out. chuuya seldomly comes over in fear of getting distracted by the cats, but the group ushers him to come anyway, and he accepts it regardless.
chuuya holds the group to his heart despite the numerous death threats he gives jokingly to the group.
they all met in the study hall, and almost everyone knows you guys are friends after the first semester finals.
people thought you and chuuya were dating but you simply helped him with a sociology project that lasted for a week. some still believe in it, chuuya having to shut those rumors down.
your roommate is rarely present in the dorm, but it's nice to have them in once in a while, although they're busy with their partner. unironically a good comforter when it comes to your feelings, they've dealt with this ever since you landed yourself as their roommate.
after ranpo's issues with basic tasks, the staff assigned yosano to room with him.
since the dorms are assorted into various majors, all of you meet up in fukuzawa's cafe, where all of you go inside a private room expectedly assigned to all of you. it's an unspoken rule for your group to land yourselves in that room.
cats LOVE fyodor for some reason. he has a calming aura that lures cats to him.
