Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses
Social media marketing is a great way for small businesses to reach potential customers and grow their brand. Here’s a quick guide to get started:
Pick the Right Platforms Focus on platforms where your target audience is most active. For example, Instagram is great for visual brands, while LinkedIn is perfect for B2B.
Create Simple, Engaging Content Share valuable and visually appealing posts like product photos, tips, or behind-the-scenes content. Keep it short and relevant to your audience.
Post Consistently Develop a posting schedule and stick to it. Regular posting helps keep your audience engaged and improves your online presence.
Engage with Your Followers Respond to comments and messages to build trust and loyalty. Interaction shows your business is active and cares about its audience.
Run Ads on a Budget Social media ads are cost-effective and allow you to target specific demographics. Start small and track the performance of your ads.
By following these steps, small businesses can effectively use social media marketing to build an audience, increase brand awareness, and grow their customer base.

“I’m not on tiktok anyway so this does not affect me” no???? it’s not just about tiktok or whether or not you like the app??? it’s about them being able to censor and control what they want and what they don’t want people to see. it’s about them being able to keep people uneducated for the sake of their personal gain and benefits.
(it’s also about small businesses who relied on tiktok to gain customers / income.)
that being said, if the only thing you care about is the platforms you’re on, sorry to break it to you, but if they can ban tiktok, they can go after any other platforms too.
they can go after tumblr, archive of our own, instagram, youtube, facebook, etc, you name it.
it actually does affect you.

i really do think there’s a huge disconnect on here w/ people who have never used tiktok as to what it actually is and who actually uses it. the number of people i’ve seen call it a “teen dancing app” is actually insane. it has not been a teen dancing app since i was in high school, around 2016 - 2020. the main communities i saw on a daily basis were 1) black history/anti-racism educators, 2) high school & college teachers sharing in-classroom strategies and frustrations with the education system, 3) local/state political leaders giving real-time updates on behind-the-scenes government decisions, & 4) community activism & leadership. like tiktok is an adult platform. almost every person i interacted with was my age or older. and yes it completely depends on your fyp and how you interact with the app, yes there’s still teenagers and dance videos and literally anything else you can think of. but these communities of adults aren’t insubstantial at all, they have literally millions of interactions on a daily basis. there’s about a million other types of communities that i could name just off the top of my head, because the range of users was SO diverse and thriving. it’s a long-distance community tool, just like any other social media—and honestly much better than any other social media, because it relies primarily on the kindness of strangers. i saw at least 5-10 videos today of queer people in rural areas panicking because they don’t have any access to queer community on any other platform or in real life. and before i end this i do want to say i think tiktok is coming back, i think this is a highly orchestrated political move, etc., but i do know it won’t ever be exactly the same. people are panicking about free speech violations because tiktok was a place where people fucking SPEAK. i have never seen mass mobilization and communication in this same way for as long as i’ve been alive. it is the people’s app, not just a silly teenage thing. if you’re not on tiktok and never have been, please stop talking about it like you know anything at all😭

Here's a lil comic strip about how you can protect your art before sharing it to the public!!!
Against AI and against art theft too!
Click on 'read more' to see the extra tip I mentioned at the end!
Geez been working on this since the Meta AI things blew up but I only finished just now!!
Here's the extra tip I mentioned at the end:
you can use http://haveibeentrained.com to search for your images and find out if your work has been used for AI.
In there, you can choose to opt out, but AI companies are not obligated to respect it so it isn't too much of a protection unfortunately 😭
Also be aware that they are associated with AI and they did try to badmouth glaze so artists wouldn't protect themselves; which's very bad for a company that allegedly are on the side of the artists.
Also!!! There's a new type of AI that I was just made aware of last week, Copainter.
It completes unfinished work, which can be used for 'stealing and claiming it theirs', so put a cat picture in the next wips you post as well!
Funny protective measure I know LOLLLL but here's the tests for yall cynical people:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps I'll complete this comic with this info one day, but just these 10 slides took a looot of work so probably not happening anytime soon 😭
Thank you for reading everything though, I really appreciate it and hope this will help 🫶 be careful out there, privacy issues have been crazy recently!!!

Working in marketing in this day and age is wild because I get to see upclose the way AI is being pushed as a tool to use to churn out content by our bosses because a lot of companies still have this 2010s mindset that they need to be populating the internet regularly with useless articles on how to do things just to stay relevant on search engines but this takes so much time and effort on the part of humans because the articles have to make at least a little sense and require research on an industry you may know nothing about but marketing firms require you to be able to write a nonsense essay about for the SEO but of course if it's just automated we don't need to worry about it, this isn't a serious writing endeavor intent on helping end users, it's about pushing the product at the end of another 300 word article, living and dying by the whims of yet another algorithm

the whole tiktok ban situation is super crunchy and I'm conflicted. Because on the one hand...it does feel startlingly close to a kind of censorship and I think the whole 'chinese government links' thing is pure scaremongering. But on the other hand I genuinely think that tiktok has accelerated the rate of enshittification of so, so many things. Like it has been a net harm in basically everything. Even the publishing industry is suffering now. As someone who wants to get novels published, the entire state of the publishing industry catering to tiktok and the quality of even bookbinding rapidly deteriorating in the past couple of years, I've been reconsidering and thinking about simply setting up a website/archive to self publish my work.
So...I don't know. It's not as if other social media sites (X, Facebook, etc.) haven't done harm, and it's not like huge media giants like Google haven't caused possibly irreparable damage to how things work now, but...I just distinctly remember a pre-tiktok, pre-covid world and things legitimately weren't as bad online then as they are now. Tiktok actually feels uniquely bad. The change happened so rapidly, too. At what point do we decide that a product causes enough visible harm that it needs to be removed? Because that's what tiktok is, at the end of the day. It's a product. We don't have the same clear measurement as we do with, say, lead paint on children's toys, but idk idk idk...

Anyone Else Feeling Worn Out by Instagram?
Instagram feels like more of a challenge these days, with algorithms becoming unpredictable and lacking the intuitive energy that aligns with being a human user.
Gone are the days of it being an authentic space to truly create, connect, and be seen. The pressure to curate the perfect feed, follow trends, or even pay for visibility has become draining—especially for small business owners. I miss the days when we could share what we loved and build community authentically, without constantly thinking about numbers or staying relevant in the fast tides of the algorithm.
Is anyone else feeling the same? It seems like Instagram has lost its original vibe, and I’m craving spaces where creativity can flow naturally again. Tumblr feels refreshing—no pressure, just a place to be authentic.
It makes me feel so warm inside. My teen self gets to return to the place where her love of photography and emotional intelligence developed many moons ago in my lonely rural hometown, where Tumblr was my refuge and a place to connect with others like me.
What I love about Tumblr today is the peacefulness that comes after posting. It feels like you’re part of something, rather than having visibility anxiety.
There’s a real sense of authenticity and connection, none of the pressure that leaves you second-guessing every move. It’s a platform where creativity feels free, and I’m glad to be back again!
How are you all finding it? Are you exploring other platforms and moving away from the stress of Instagram?

I want to buy a sticker from your shop, but shipping (to Canada) is down as $22 before tax. May I ask why it costs so much to ship a single sticker? Is it Etsy being weird, or does it really cost that much to send an envelope over the border?
I'm not trying to be snarky or passive aggressive or anything, I'm genuinely just kind of befuddled atm.
A fair question honestly! USPS sets the rates for international shipping, and shipping to canada really is about that expensive 😭 I considered sending stickers via envelopes, but 1. if I send them with a stamp (less than $2) they don't have tracking, and etsy Does Not Like That. I gotta send packages with shipping to qualify for star seller, plus it covers your ass in case USPS loses it. and 2. apparently it's illegal to send merchandise internationally in envelopes!! so sadly we're all stuck dealing with the super crazy international rates. I don't like it either because as someone who deals in trinkets, people generally do not want to pay $16 for a charm that costs $12, and they especially don't want to pay that for a sticker that costs $4... I would ABSOLUTELY have way more international sales if USPS wasn't fucking us with the prices but it's out of my control dssdjkfjksdf
I give this advice a lot, but if you don't want to pay international shipping (or just live in a country I don't ship to myself), you can borrow the address of a friend that lives in the states and they can forward it to you! I don't actually know if this is cheaper, but some people have said it is. it's def cheaper for stickers though if your friend uses a stamp!
TL;DR yeah etsy and USPS are Both Weird, sorry ; - ; i assure you i hate it even More than you do lmao

I’m very, very sorry I didn’t post new videos to my YT this year but 2023 was intense. I want to be more consistent in 2024. Let’s pray WW3 doesn’t break out.

Hey there! My name is Sam and I'm a candle maker with my own shop called The Merry Wick! I create scents inspired by music and stories whether they be from movies, shows, or books. I get pretty deeply attached to my favorite things and always want to experience them to the fullest extent, hence turning those favorite things into scents! Like 99% of Small Businesses right now, I am super frustrated and discouraged by standard social media, and as a person I am so incredibly exhausted by it. Every day I think about just deleting Instagram ( I already deleted TikTok ) but if I want to have a small business it doesn't feel like it's an option.
I know the middle ground is just to fix my relationship with social media, but since my business is small, I work alone from home and it is the closest thing I have to every day socialization as well. I'm trying to find a space that works for me, where I feel connected and can share the things I create, but not feel like i'm drowning. I'm not sure if that space exists, but heres to trying! ❤️
