*not at all sincerely* I’m sorry that I’m smarter than you
*To a professor* It’s okay, you can say it went to hell, we all agree with you.
“What goes on inside your head?” “Not much, actually.”
It’s always really hard to tell the difference between a philosophy major and the local weed dealer.
*in immense pain* who invented triangles?!
Why do you need to be an engineer when you could be a dumbass with a knife?
You have kneecaps and I don’t have money, one of these things is going to change.
Please steal my identity, I don’t want it.

Did a second run of Shadows over Loathing because I wanted to do an evil run. I had far too much fun with this guy and I am perhaps even more attached to him than Cecil because sometimes you need a guy who loves being fucked up.
He's not even evil, really, because that would imply he cares about what he's doing.
Bonus picture that's a vital contribution to their dynamic:

anyways, i do think its really interesting that chuuya figures out that dazai was putting pieces into place to get him ousted from the sheep like a month ahead of time... its also really interesting to consider WHY dazai did it and the implications it carries. dazai watches shirase and yuan pressure and guilt chuuya about "doing his part" for the sheep as a person with an ability, then immediately takes action to relieve pressure from chuuya
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is kinda funny bc dazai at least in the short term is following what shirase is saying - dazai has the ability to help save the hostages, and he does lol. demon prodigy indeed. MORE IMPORTANTLY though. dazai recognizes that chuuya is being controlled by the sheep even though he is the leader. chuuya and mori make good comparisons here - this arc starts with mori bemoaning his responsibility as the boss of the port mafia, and we see chuuya consistently failing to do his responsibility as the leader of the sheep. he even denies the title of king, stating that it's only his ability that puts him above the rest. to digress a bit, i think this is partly why when chuuya joins the port mafia he so quickly submits to them - he is no longer the sole ability user, and thus the responsibility doesnt rely entirely on him to protect the group. something to be said here about the way bsd almost never touches on the ability user vs non-ability user dichotomy but ill save that. back to the main point. dazai takes it upon himself to free chuuya from the sheep. he acknowledges the limitations chuuya has to function under as the leader of the sheep and the weight of the responsibility he bears for no reason other than his ability
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but then! dazai forces chuuya into the port mafia to save him from the sheep ! doesnt that seem contradictory??? isnt that hypocritical? chuuya seems pissed about it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
granted, I'd be pissed too if my friends stabbed me with a switch covered in rat poison then tried to gun me down. regardless, chuuya can see how dazai set him up to be outcast from the sheep without having to break the tie himself. chuuya is loyal to the sheep, even when they distrust him. But! this gives chuuya a chance to escape, even if it's to the port mafia. i think the important thing to focus on here is that the port mafia is an Actual organization made up of adults. the sheep are a bunch of kids, ones that are easily led. the limited pieces we see of them are shirase and yuan, who throw temper tantrums and try to clumsily manipulate chuuya when he doesn't listen to them. they admit to stealing alcohol from mafia-adjacent territory and just generally seem immature... because theyre kids. but what we see of the mafia is much different. mori is a strong leader because he is smart and rational. he thinks ahead. he, unlike chuuya, is the leader because he wants to protect yokohama, and understands the sacrifice necessary to do so. chuuya is the leader because no one could beat him in a fight. the port mafia offers a chance for growth (ignoring that these are children in the mafia ok play with me here) as a fighter and as a leader - chuuya becomes an exec when he's still a teenager i think (theres not a specific age anywhere i can find) and is a much more calm and smart fighter once he joins.
so it's good (play with me) that chuuya is able to join the port mafia. BUT he would never have been able to leave if dazai had not forced his hand. this paradox - the idea that chuuya obtains freedom from being forced to leave something he doesn't want to - is SUPER interesting to consider !! here i will dissolve into rambles. i learned about this paradox in the context of mary wollstonecraft and the vindication of the rights of women - wollstonecraft believed only educated people could truly be free, as they were not only free of oppression but also no longer slaves to their emotions, and were able to have opportunities and use their education for their own betterment. the situation with chuuya reminded me of this, because with the sheep chuuya had no one to rely on or to teach him, limiting his capacity for growth and ultimately his freedom. the sheep were reliant on him for protection, and feared him, but chuuya had everything to lose if he were to try and leave the sheep. he had nothing without them, and they needed him for his power. but they were beholden to their emotions, immature and uncertain how to actually get power. their primary motivators for action are retaliation - dazai mentions this when chuuya attacks him, and shirase and yuan mention this when they are urging chuuya to help them. but when chuuya talks to mori and koyo (<3) about their actions, both of them are much more forward thinking than that. mori is very cunning and sly, and koyo tells chuuya that even if things go south in the meeting she's taking him to to, they know how to move forward. chuuya's world has expanded beyond the sheep's limited gaze.
of course, he's still trapped in the port mafia, but if you REALLY want to discuss free will..... we'll be here all fucking night. free will is really hard to pin down and i always have to talk about determinism and its a lot to wrap ur head around and i just like drawing connections between stuff i like

Twst: Idia at Port Fest
Idia actually contributes to his group's food stall by not only creating a machine to be super efficient at cooking up the waffles they're selling, but also ends up operating the machine the entire time. He's a bit reasonable while also a bit goofy with naming things. He named his waffle maker "Port Fest Waffle Iron Portable MAX Custom". Portable waffle iron is reasonable and I suppose putting Port Fest in the name helps indicate its meant for special events and not an ordinary house appliance. Which makes sense to clarify a bit as it's probably a big machine since Idia mentions it being able to cook several waffles at a time. Usual waffle irons only make one at a time. For the MAX Custom, that seems a bit silly and unneeded. Though I suppose the MAX is supposed to refer to how many waffles it can make at once along with Custom meaning it being specially made for this? Really could just cut it down to "Festival Waffle Iron".
He mentions that it has an infrared sensor and an ai to tell when the waffles are ready and to consistently make the waffles supposedly at the same quality of a master chef. Then he adds in that he put a small fan in to help spread the smell about to help draw in customers. I suppose importance on the "small" part of small fan since the others share their concerns about how hot it is near the machine. Idia shares that it's a byproduct of high performance yet that the ai is heat protected so things are fine. Which I suppose that means that it really is making a whole lot at once for the ai to cause the machine to heat up? I don't know how much processing power it would take for a machine to image or infrared read a waffle turning golden brown but I would assume some of the heat would be thanks to it being a cooking machine. Heat is required to cook something.
Anyway Idia says he's not worried about the heat, ignoring that the others concerns were more about their own safety of interacting with such a heated machine. Later Idia shares that no one could work the waffle iron so he had to deal with it the entire time with no breaks. This either means the others didn't know how to work it or that they simply refused to withstand the heat being produced by that machine. So either Idia overcomplicated how to use the machine or he's unaffected by the heat?
I would think a tech-genius would just make it so that the machine upon being turned on automatically opens. Once the batter is poured in, a button could be pressed and the machine closes. After the minute of cooking and the ai has assessed it to be perfect, the machine reopens. Upon being turned off it automatically closes too. Have it as simple as that.
Did Idia use buttons? Did he have to lift the lid to something bulky? Or did he connect it to his tablet and use the tablet to tell the machine to open? Did he have to pour in the batter himself? Unable to take breaks makes it sound like he was constantly watching over the thing but I do think Idia has the tendency to be a bit overdramatic about some things.
For example when it came to the Harveston Sledathon event, he was freaking out until he was pushed through the magic mirror. Then all signs of anxiety was gone. Which meant Ortho wasn't being a jerk by last minute pulling out of going with them all, but knew his brother was just going to overthink and freak out until he actually got there. Thanks to book 6 I can see why the idea of going somewhere does freak him out. It makes sense he would fret over going somewhere but upon safely arriving he completely okay.
Anyway Idia may be a bit overdramatic because surely it would slow things down if they had only one person pouring in batter. Idia just needs to be off to the side, making sure the thing cooks when its time to make more waffles. Idia then goes to say it's ironic that machine he made to make things easier ended up only operable by him. Idia... making a machine that is supposed to be easy, simple, and anyone can figure it out... but only you can do it means you've failed. Sure it worked in the other ways, but he's failed to make it user-friendly.
Also I'm pretty confident he wasn't constantly making waffles since the point of the machine was so they wouldn't have to constantly make waffles and could have a good bunch ready at once. He also took the time to fix up and upgrade a cotton candy machine when Sebek brought it to him. Which means he had some time to spare, because otherwise I'm certain the others in his group would have argued with Sebek that Idia can't fix it. Idia wouldn't have to worry about fighting off Sebek when their group is relying on him to work his machine. So since no one tried to argue with Sebek, Idia did have the time to work on it.
Pretty funny that Idia considers the upgrades he gave it as part of fixing it. He says it was a rush job and that he could only increase its power output by five times. This suggests to me that he can't help himself but improve anything put in his hands. He must give it more power. Though maybe arguably it is just part of fixing it. Floyd trying to make a large cotton candy which was too much for the machine to handle. In order to have it handle the stress of that along with keeping it from breaking again, upping its power/strength would help. Regardless, he can't help but rename the machine. Which follows the same pattern as the machine he made from scrap for making a bunch of waffles within a minute. He names the powered up cotton candy machine "Port Fest Cotton Candy Machine Turbo X Custom". Could have just named it "Cotton Candy Turbo Machine". Not even the X. If he insists on a roman numeral then he can go with V. X means ten, V means five. He only upped its power by five.
TLDR: Idia is a bit silly with naming and doesn't know how to make things user-friendly. That or he's immune to heat and thus doesn't know how to make things heat-friendly.

"It even connects to your smart phone!"
Well... that's a huge downside for something to have, don't like that
#don't like it cause not only might it be harvesting data on me; but that also means it probably is real susceptible#to the manufacturer just deciding they don't support it anymore; specifically with software#and of course that not just meaning 'not support' but meaning 'we've bricked your working device'#like I get why people like it; the convenience of your whole life in the palm of your hand#but I don't trust like that#to me it's an unneeded massive point of failure that risks me not actually owning the physical thing I bought#this is about a density meter for like... figuring alcohol content in home brewing#and like... neat... but the moment they said 'it even connects to your smart phone' that's a massive red flag to me and I don't like that#takes it from 'if I ever start brewing maybe I should get that'#to '...man... I don't know that I trust them not to brick my shit with hostile software'#know nothing about the company; but that's how I feel about all app based shit#maybe just like... measure my shit for me and keep and internal log... oh; and a usb port and the ability to interface with standard OSs#that would be nice; like then I can rip the logs off your thing onto my computer#but nah... I don't want a phone involved unless I plug it in with a usb#I'd rather it be a little less convenient for me; but not use a wifi signal#cause then you can't fuck with it; no one can fuck with it; except me when I plug direct into it#...don't want my shit connecting to the internet; and that's the other problem with apps#they pretty much can't mean anything but an internet connection... cause how else does it talk to your phone?#if it's not my computer; frankly it should be dumb and totally offline with usb ports (or other HDMI whatever) for communicating#tv should be a dumb blackbox; oven should be a dumb blackbox; sadly even thermostats and shit should be a dumb blackbox#this shit makes life easier... till it doesn't; and if I don't have total control over it then someone else does#like... if I have a closed system smart home; that's one thing; but if I use a standard one that means anyone can access it#both in terms of random employees being caught peeping on me (and tos that say they're allowed to gather data on my sexuality and shit)#to the fact that if it hooks up to the internet and someone can connect to it... they just have to get past security and they're in#like my car shouldn't fucking be harvesting data on me; that tos example wasn't random; that's lifted from one of car companies tos#online is vulnerable; online is unsecured more often than not; it's a fucking risk that isn't worth it#it's like all those keyless cars getting stolen cause all they gotta do is catch your fob's signal and then spoof it#I want it dumb and connecting to nothing 95% of the time#sometimes I want it dumb and connecting only with a direct wire#I in theory might want it smart but on a closed home network I have complete control over

Advancing Digital Infrastructure In Australia Smart Ports
Tumblr media
Australia Smart Ports is rapidly advancing their digital infrastructure to operate more efficiently as smart ports. Major ports around the country have invested heavily in the latest technologies like internet of things (IoT) sensors, data analytics, artificial intelligence, and automation. Port authorities understand that digital transformation is crucial to remain competitive globally and meet the challenges of growing trade volumes. Advanced digital systems allow for improved cargo tracking, optimized terminal operations, predictive maintenance, and enhanced safety and security.
Expanding Iot Sensor Network
One of the primary focuses has been expanding the network of IoT sensors deployed across port facilities. Sensors are being installed on all types of automated cargo handling equipment as well as other assets to constantly monitor performance and collect operational data. This includes sensors to track the location, payload, fuel levels, emissions, and operational status of cranes, reach stackers, automated guided vehicles, and other motorized equipment used in container terminals. Environmental sensors also monitor factors like wind speed, visibility, tidal levels, and more. The vast amounts of real-time sensor data are then analyzed using advanced analytics platforms.
Optimizing Terminal Workflow
The data collected from IoT sensors provides valuable insights into how to optimize workflows within the container terminals. Using data analytics and artificial intelligence, port authorities can identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and unused capacity. This allows them to refine terminal layouts, berth allocations, and yard planning strategies. It also helps dynamically schedule workloads to balance productivity across shifts and avoid overloading any single piece of equipment. Automated job dispatching based on real-time conditions further enhances operational efficiency. The end goal of Australia Smart Ports is to turn around ships faster by speeding up cargo movements within the terminals.
Predictive Maintenance Applications
Predictive maintenance applications are demonstrating significant benefits by analyzing equipment sensor data. By monitoring parameters like vibration levels, pressure fluctuations, temperature changes and more, these systems can detect early signs of potential component failures. This predictive capability enables proactive maintenance schedules that prevent unexpected breakdowns and reduce repair times. It maximizes asset uptime critical for port operations. Certain faults are even flagged in real-time, allowing maintenance crews to respond rapidly. Over time, such predictive digital tools are expected to lower operating costs through reduced maintenance expenses and improved asset lifecycles.
Enhancing Workplace Safety
Digital workplace safety solutions use sensors, location tracking, and data analytics to enhance safety for personnel working within port facilities. IoT tags placed on vehicles, workwear and equipment allow their real-time locations to be monitored. If anyone encroaches restricted or hazardous zones, automated alarms can be triggered. Sensor data is also analyzed to identify unsafe behaviors, close calls, compliance lapses and other red flags. This generates insights into redesigning processes or retraining workers to minimize risks. Advanced surveillance systems with analytics further strengthen overall security within port perimeters against external threats. Overall, Australia Smart Ports aim to achieve a goal of zero harm.
Security And Cyber Resilience
With digital technologies managing core logistics operations, cybersecurity is of paramount importance for smart ports. Sophisticated measures and technologies are being adopted to secure infrastructure and protect sensitive data from malicious cyber threats which could severely impact port functions and trade flows. Multi-layered security strategies incorporate tools like firewalls, access controls, encryption, identity & access management and firewalls. Advanced monitoring detects anomalies or attacks in real-time. Response plans and disaster recovery procedures ensure business continuity even during security breaches. Regular internal and external vulnerability testing strengthens overall cyber resilience of digital systems controlling port operations.
Australia Smart Ports are demonstrating how advanced digital technologies and data-driven approaches can optimize operations, enhance efficiency, improve safety and uphold security standards. As digital transformation initiatives progress, major ports around the country are well positioned to handle rapidly growing cargo volumes sustainably and remain globally competitive well into the future.
