A/N:  reminding everyone that this story features a named oc because i’m still very unfamiliar with writing second person reader inserts. i’m not aiming for strict accuracy in this story, and all criminal investigation/forensics knowledge i have has been gathered by watching crime drama/procedural dramas! my knowledge of geography is also not totally accurate so apologies for that. once again, one thing right by @hobios​ prompted me to write a police inspector! jungkook story. would highly recommend reading that because it’s probably one of my most favorite pieces of writing!

18th December

Ahreum parked her motorbike outside the bakery and checked her phone for messages. There were none. This wasn’t unusual in itself, except for the fact that she had been supposed to meet him 2 hours ago at the other end of town. Which meant that he was hiding from her. 

“Where is he?” she asked, walking up to the counter and heaving a tired sigh.

Seokjin pressed his lips together, trying to suppress the grin that was threatening to break out. Ahreum was definitely a force to be reckoned with - usually bright and overflowing with energy, there was only one situation that caused the optimist in her to hurtle towards a speedy demise. 

“Can I interest you in some raspberry choux au craquelin?” He picked up a tray with freshly baked pastry and waved it enticingly in front of her.

“This doesn’t work on me, Seokjin. Although-” she picked up a few and wrapped them in some paper napkins - “I’m sure Yuri would love to try these. Now, where is he?”

Seokjin sighed and took off his apron. “He’s in the room right at the back where I do the accounts.”

Ahreum sighed and walked around the back of the counter, heading towards the rooms at the back of the bakery. Seokjin had three areas at the back - his kitchen (really no one other than him was allowed in here), the store room (which was way too small to fit even one full grown person in it), and the accounts room (where a certain someone had taken to hiding whenever things got a little too difficult). 

And sure enough, a mop of curly black hair was visible from the door to the accounts room. On any other day, Ahreum would’ve found his shenanigans extremely hilarious; but she was really not in the mood for any silly games today.

“You were supposed to meet me two hours ago.” Her voice was soft but it still made him jump up and nearly knock over the PC he had been fidgeting with. 

“Fuck!” he gasped. “What the hell? I nearly died!”

Ahreum rolled her eyes as she helped him up. “Don’t be dramatic, Tae. It’s really not as attractive as you think.”

Be that as it may, there was not much that could be considered unattractive on Kim Taehyung. He was somewhat of a social media celebrity thanks to the aesthetically taken pictures of his undoubtedly handsome face - all of which Ahreum had taken. In fact, when Ahreum had shown Yuri some of the pictures from her instagram page, she had gasped rather loudly.

“He’s literally a piece of art!”

“I mean, yes, he’s definitely conventionally attractive,” conceded Ahreum, a little annoyed that her photography was almost completely being ignored. “But what do you think of the pictures?”

“‘Conventionally attractive’? Is that the best you can do with your Literature & Creative Writing degree?”

Ahreum peered over his shoulder to see what he was working on so intently, only to find that he was-

“Playing a game?? You ditched me to play a fucking PC game?” she gasped, whacking his shoulder hard. “What the hell is wrong with you, Kim Taehyung?!”

“No!” He held his hands up to protect himself from further blows. “I just started playing a few minutes ago! I swear!”

“Why’d you ditch, then?”

“Because…” he trailed off, looking away guiltily. That, in essence, was the entire problem regarding Kim Taehyung. He ran at the sight of any kind of responsibility or hard work. Correction - any kind of hard work that wasn’t related to his hobbies. 

“You were supposed to finish reviewing company policies today so that you wouldn’t be unprepared when you meet your dad tomorrow.”

“I know.” He looked downcast, switching off the PC monitor. “I just-”

“If this isn’t what you want to do, you should just tell them.” Seokjin walked into the room, untying his apron carefully. 

“I don’t know,” sighed Taehyung. “I’m not sure if this is what I want to do, but I don’t know what else I could possibly do. I’m not like you.”

“You don’t have to be like me, Taehyung,” sighed Seokjin. 

Taehyung let out a humorless laugh. “Eomma and Appa sure are trying their damned best that I do become like you. At least, like you till you ran away.”

Seokjin snorted. “They’re tenacious, if nothing else.”

“Are you ever gonna come home?” asked Taehyung, looking up for the first time.

“No.”

This had never been an easy topic of discussion. Mr. and Mrs. Kim were owners of the largest financial consulting firm in Busan. They were well-liked in society and highly respected for their unusually ethical business practices. So it was a huge shock when their elder son - who had gotten an MBA and possessed all the qualities of heading a large company - had left home suddenly, leaving only a single note.

This is not the life for me. I have dreams of my own. I don’t think I can stay in touch. Please forgive me. 

There were many tears shed, but recovery was quick as a new successor had to be found. Thus, the Kims’ younger son - the one who had lived a charmed and carefree life while his brother learned about business techniques and the history of the company - was suddenly thrust into the front line. 

Naturally, when Taehyung had run into his brother a few miles outside of the metropolitan, running a cozy bakery, he had been less than thrilled. Ahreum still remembered the angry tears that had rolled down her friend’s usually cheerful face. Seokjin, on the other hand, looked so conflicted that Ahreum thought he might just combust on the spot. It had taken a few weeks, but the brothers had eventually reconciled. Taehyung had made a deal with his parents - he would attend all meetings and grooming lessons as long as he was allowed to live somewhere else. And that somewhere else happened to be Seokjin’s small, but tastefully done up, apartment. 

Taehyung usually had 4 meetings in a week; all ending by 4 pm so that he could drive home before nightfall. The rest of the days, he was free to do whatever he pleased. This arrangement had worked well for almost 3 months, but Taehyung’s free-spirited nature could only hold out for so long. He had been reaching meetings late, forgetting to complete paperwork, and even sneaking out early if he could manage it. Seokjin had requested Ahreum to make sure his younger brother attended all his meetings because he was always managing the bakery at those times. Seokjin himself made sure that Taehyung didn’t forget to do any of the work that had been assigned to the younger boy during his meetings. 

Today, however, Ahreum realised that her friend was at his breaking point. He had done everything in his power to avoid her so that he wouldn’t have to prepare for the meeting. Not just that, Seokjin-

“Why’d you let him hide here?” Ahreum turned towards the older Kim brother, her hands on her hips - a sure sign that her patience was running thin. “After the dozens of lectures you gave me about making sure he’s doing what he’s supposed to, you go ahead and help him play hooky? What the hell, Seokjin?”

Seokjin didn’t know how to explain to her that he felt guilty. Guilty that his younger brother was suffering like this, guilty that his parents were so desperate that they had decided to entrust the future of the company to a young boy who had missed his final university exam because he had found a stray puppy during his morning cycle rides (and had promptly decided to adopt it). But Seokjin couldn’t leave behind his dream - his resentment towards his family had been growing with each passing year, and the drastic move and change in communication had been a desperate attempt to stop himself from hating his family forever. Caught between doing right by his own self and by his parents and younger brother, Seokjin often questioned if any of this was worth it. 

But rather than explain all this to his brother’s friend - who had pinned him with a rather glowering look - he did what he always did in difficult situations. He avoided answering directly and used humor to deflect everything.

“I was cleaning up your mess, unfortunately. I’m not the one who lost him during a fixed study session, Ahreum. You should be thanking me,” he grinned, dodging the pencil Ahreum threw at him. “But since I’m such a generous, handsome, charming, and talented individual, I’ll let it slide and pack two large boxes of pastries for you to take home. One for your friend and the other for Namjoon. No charge, it’s on the house.”

Ahreum rolled her eyes while Taehyung giggled at his brother’s speech. 

“I’d better get 4 large iced teas along with the pastries,” she said, finally relenting. Seokjin winked at her and went back to the front of the store to get everything prepared.

“I’m sorry for ditching you,” Taehyung said softly, his black curls falling over his eyes. “It won’t happen again, I promise.”

“Maybe we should try and figure out a different system. How many more of these meetings and lessons do you need to attend, anyway? Why don’t you ask your parents if you can reduce the number of meetings in a week?”

“I guess I could,” he replied, thoughtfully. “By the way, did you see Jimin on your way here?”

Ahreum shook her head. “Nope. Was I supposed to have?”

“No… it’s just that-” he checked his phone absentmindedly. “He hasn’t been answering any of my calls or texts since last night.”

“Since when does Park Jimin start his day before 3 pm?” scoffed Ahreum. “He’s probably hungover at some girl’s apartment.”

 “Aw come on, Ahreum. He’s been so much better recently,” whined Taehyung. “And I’m not saying that just because he’s my best friend. He barely parties anymore - unless it’s a business appointment. He’s been helping his dad with the business as well. Unlike me, he actually goes to work 5 days a week.”

“Wow, let’s give him a medal for doing the bare minimum.” 

Seokjin appeared at that moment, holding two bulging pastry boxes and a cup holder with 4 cups of iced tea.

“Tell Namjoon to drop by sometime, or that’s the last eclair he’ll be seeing!” he yelled as Ahreum strapped on her helmet and bade goodbye.

Jeongguk sat at his desk, his mind straying to that night in November. He could clearly recall the murder - the young woman on the ground, blood leaking from the multiple stab wounds all over her abdomen. She lived on part-time jobs, her demeanour quiet and unassuming as recounted by the handful of employers who had managed to recall her face. It was not surprising that she did not have too many possessions of her own, her life neatly tucked away into a one-room storage on the ground floor of a run-down building. But it wasn’t all of this that kept distracting Jeongguk from almost everything in his life - it was the picture of a three year old girl, the only evidence of life in the entire room, smiling brightly at her mother. The mother who lay in a pool of her own blood, and the little girl who had been missing since that day. 

“The ramen’s gone cold? Things must have really changed since I last saw you, Jeongguk.”

Jeongguk turned around at the sound of a familiar voice, his eyes lighting up in surprise.

“Yoongi? What are you doing here?” he asked, getting up and hugging his friend. “Why aren’t you in Seoul, putting bigwigs behind bars?”

“Let’s get some lamb skewers. My treat.” Jeongguk grinned at the suggestion, the grisly murder and the missing girl temporarily forgotten.

20 minutes later, they were sitting at a hole in the wall diner that Jeongguk hadn’t been to since he had been promoted to Detective Inspector. 

“Are you telling me that our own Min Yoongi is now a father? The same guy who instilled fear in the hearts of the juniors by narrowing his eyes at them?” 

Yoongi laughed, his gummy smile appearing for the first time. “She’s almost 4 weeks old. Sometimes I’m not even sure if she’s real. But then Eunbi puts me on diaper duty and there’s no way that smell can’t be real.”

“Knew she was something special the day she called you out on your bullshit,” grinned Jeongguk. “The famous Min Eye Narrowing technique didn’t work on her.”

“Yeah, she told me to stop pulling all-nighters and get a new prescription from my eye doctor,” recalled Yoongi, adjusting his glasses. “Turns out the famous Min Eye Narrowing technique was just plain old myopia.”

“But enough about me,” he continued, once Jeongguk had stopped laughing. “Why was that ramen sitting out and getting cold?”

Normally, Jeongguk wouldn’t discuss the details of a case with anyone else. But Yoongi wasn’t just anyone - they had trained at the same police academy in Seoul and the older boy had quickly understood that 18 year old Jeongguk wasn’t a standoffish troublemaker; just extremely homesick. Even after Jeongguk had moved back to Busan, he and Yoongi still kept in touch with each other, no matter how sporadic.

Jeongguk sighed and explained the details of the November case. “I just can’t let it go. Where is that little girl? We haven’t found a body either - so there’s a chance she might still be alive. It’s just- I think I’m going crazy.”

“I understand,” said Yoongi, wiping his mouth with a napkin. “That pathetic partner of yours can’t be of much use either, I’m sure. Still don’t know how they promoted Song to Detective Inspector. I’ve always maintained that he’s one shot away from becoming an alcoholic.”

“Well you weren’t wrong,” said Jeongguk, with a resigned chuckle. “They relieved him of his duties a couple of months ago.”

“Oh? Who’s your new partner then?”

“Some annoying Captain America wannabe,” grumbled Jeongguk. It was a well-known fact that he was a huge Iron Man fan and had not appreciated the ending of Civil War. “Choi Yuri - she’s from Seoul.”

“Choi Yuri?!” asked Yoongi, his eyes widening comically. “Your new partner is Yuri??”

“You know her?” asked Jeongguk, frowning.

“Of course I know her! We worked together for almost 3 years!” exclaimed Yoongi. “Wait, why’d you call her a Captain America wannabe? You hate Steve Rogers.”

“I do not hate Steve Rogers. I hate Captain America. There’s a difference.”

“Still doesn’t explain why you don’t like Yuri.”

“She’s too by-the-book.” Jeongguk frowned, his fingers twirling the chopsticks absentmindedly. “Perfect first impression, perfectly friendly to everyone, perfectly punctual; Goh absolutely loves her. I’m sure she’ll get in the way of the investigation because of her need to follow procedure to the t.”

Yoongi frowned. “That... doesn’t sound like her. I mean, she’s definitely punctual but she’s never made a great first impression. She usually comes off as reserved, aloof - haughty even.”

“Maybe she’s changed,” shrugged Jeongguk, not particularly interested in the personality changes of his new partner.

“She has. I didn’t think that incident would have affected her like this. But…” Yoongi trailed off, staring at nothing in particular.

“What incident?”

“The reason she was transferred from Seoul. Hasn’t she told you?”

“No.”

“I don’t know if I should…” muttered Yoongi, his face reflecting his inner conflict. “But if knowing the truth makes it easier for you two to work together, then…”

Jeongguk frowned, wondering what exactly the big mystery was.

“We were investigating a homicide and it led us to a very high profile family in Seoul. It was quite clear that the eldest son was involved in the murder. I was Chief Inspector at that time, and we were getting a lot of pressure from above to wrap up the case without involving the family. But Yuri was determined to pursue the investigation. She had even rented an apartment closer to work so that she could devote more time to the case. One night, when she got back to her apartment, someone attacked her. It was quite brutal and she needed a couple of surgeries and two months of therapy after that. We eventually had to drop the case against the eldest son. Right after that, Yuri got her transfer letter. I didn’t know she had been transferred here, otherwise I would’ve told you about her. She’s a smart detective, Jeongguk. Just try and work with her. Maybe she needs some time to adjust to getting back to work after that entire fiasco.”

Jeongguk was stunned. He would never have thought Yuri had gone through something so traumatic if Yoongi hadn’t told him. Her outward demeanour hinted at nothing of the sort, and he felt a small bubble of guilt forming in his stomach.

Yuri sat at her desk, going over the autopsy report for the twentieth time. There were no leads (other than a very uncooperative Park Jimin), no physical evidence, no concrete motive - things were looking increasingly hopeless. On top of that, she still had to contend with an asshole of a partner. 

“Yuri?” Seulgi ran up to her desk, slightly out of breath. “Where’s Jeon?”

“Dunno,” she shrugged. “Why? What’s wrong?”

“I think we may have something.” Seulgi pulled up a chair and sat down beside her. “After the autopsy concluded that Eunwoo hit his head after being pushed, I wondered if there was a proper fight preceding that. So I examined his clothes and hands once again - to try and find any evidence of a scuffle. And I did. There was dried blood, not a lot, put enough for me to run a test on it. And you know what I found?”

“It wasn’t Eunwoo’s blood.”

“Exactly. Which means...?”

“It might be from the person who fought with and then shoved him to his death.”

“Unfortunately, the blood on the sleeve doesn’t belong to anyone in the system so I would need a sample to test it against.” Seulgi waved a hand in front of Yuri, trying to get her attention.

“Oh yeah… Sorry. Yeah, a blood sample. Our only suspect right now is Park Jimin. But we let him go yesterday because we didn’t have anything concrete to hold him.”

Seulgi frowned. “So what are you waiting for? Ask him to come in and provide a blood sample.”

“It’d be completely voluntary, though. He has every right to refuse,” said Yuri, closing her eyes in frustration. She had a feeling there was no way Park Jimin would cooperate with her now when he had blatantly refused to provide an alibi earlier. 

“I know you’re new here, Yuri,” said Seulgi. “But Jimin’s an asshole. Everyone knows that. He’s evaded the law so many times because his father has the best lawyers on his payroll. That’s why he’s not in the system even though he deserves to be - he’s bought his way out multiple times.”

“You really don’t like him, do you?” asked Yuri, genuinely curious.

Seulgi’s body stiffened at the question and she stood up suddenly. “I’m just stating facts. I don’t know him personally.” 

Yuri could see that she had touched a nerve. “I’ll try and get him to give a blood sample. How long would you need to run the test?”

“I can have it done the same day if I get the sample early enough.”

Yuri pocketed her phone and keys, swiping the half-empty bottle of water from her desk, and walked towards the exit. Her mind was thinking of how exactly she could convince Park Jimin to willingly provide a blood sample. Try as she might, she couldn’t shake off the wariness she felt around young sons of influential businessmen and politicians. She no longer knew what the right step forward should be in an investigation. Something that was instinctive and almost second-nature to her, had been robbed from her and she had no idea how to get it back. Her continuous second-guessing would eventually show in the investigation, and she had no doubt that Jeon would jump at the chance to expose her inadequacies. Once again, she felt alone and vulnerable; somehow trying to survive while her weaknesses were laid bare for anyone to pick at. She had never felt this powerless since graduating from the academy.  

In her distracted state, Yuri almost ran into heavy incoming traffic. Almost. Fortunately, someone grabbed a hold of her and yanked her back by her elbow before she could become roadkill.

“Oh my god! Thank you so much! I-I wasn’t looking where I was-” she stopped short as she realized who had pulled her back to safety.

“Yoongi?!”

“Don’t sound so surprised. I’m not the one who was heading directly into peak traffic,” said Yoongi, rolling his eyes. “Are you okay?”

“Y-yeah I’m fine,” she said, still trying to process everything. “What are you doing here?”

Before Yoongi could reply, another voice spoke up. 

“Why don’t you guys go ahead and catch up? The coffee shop across the street isn’t too bad. I need to attend to some paperwork anyway, so don’t worry about me. I’ll see you later, Yoongi.”

Yuri stared open-mouthed as Yoongi grinned and thanked Jeon for lunch.

“So, coffee?”

It had been a few months since Yuri had seen her friend and senior. He didn’t look too different, except for the bags under his eyes. Maybe he had become a little thinner as well.

“You didn’t tell me why you’re here,” said Yuri, once they had both gotten their orders. 

“I came to pick up something for the little one,” said Yoongi, opening a packet of sugar and offering it to her.

“Shit. I totally forgot! The last time I saw you, Eunbi was approaching her due date! How is she? And how’s baby Min doing?”

Yoongi scrunched his nose at the last question. “Baby Min is a horrible way to address anyone. Let’s not do that. Eunbi’s fine, and so is the little one. We still haven’t decided on a name yet.”

“I’m sure you’ll think of a really beautiful name,” Yuri said, smiling softly. “There’s no need to rush.”

“How are you?”

Yoongi’s question was simple. But they both knew that the answer to it was anything but.

“I don’t know.” The frown on her face told Yoongi that a direct approach was not going to work.

“I heard that you haven’t been getting along well with your new partner,” he asked instead, suppressing a grin when her eyes lit up furiously.

“About that,” said Yuri, crossing her arms over her chest. “How do you know Jeon?”

“Jeongguk and I trained at the same academy. I was a couple of years ahead of him. But we have a mutual love of lamb skewers that helped us bond. He’s a good kid.”

“Could’ve fooled me,” muttered Yuri. “Didn’t think I’d ever doubt your character judgement abilities, Yoongi, but I’m gonna have to disagree with you on this one. Jeon’s an asshole. And he’s made things really difficult for me, even though it’s barely been three days since I started here.”

“I won’t lie,” chuckled Yoongi. “He didn’t have the best things to say about you either. But I think I know you both quite well. And I think you’ve both got bigger things weighing on you right now which have clouded your personalities. I’m not saying you should go ahead and become best buds right away. Just… keep an open mind.”

Yuri remained quiet, not sure how she felt about what Yoongi had just said. It annoyed her that her friend didn’t appear to be on her side completely. 

“I can see that you aren’t liking what I’m saying and the annoyance has already started to show on your face,” said Yoongi with a twinkle in his eye. “So I’m just going to say one last thing on the issue. The 2nd November case that Jeongguk’s been overseeing - I want you to go over it. You might be able to help.”

“I don’t know if that’s such a good idea…”

“I know that you’re scared. Your fear is completely understandable. But that’s just a part of you - maybe a bigger part than you would like, but a part nonetheless. You didn’t choose this and you definitely didn’t want this. But it’s something that you are going to have to accept eventually. The scars that are formed unknowingly, unwantedly, mistakenly - they are all part of your constellation.”

It was strange. Yoongi hadn’t told her to overcome her fears - he hadn’t even asked her exactly what it was that she was afraid of. But his words had struck a chord somewhere. 

When they parted outside the station a little later, Yuri stared at her friend while trying to decide what to tell him. In the end, she settled for something professional whose meaning was deeply personal to the two of them.

“I’m sorry they demoted you.”

Hey! Sorry for the late reply this is going to be long lol so I wanted to be on PC so I can put it under a cut!

In short, DA:I is a little more frustrating to mod mostly because you can’t add new meshes to the game you can only replace them (although there’s been a lot of new developments lately but I’ll get to it later!). So most mods are replacements of existing things in-game so if say you want two hairs but both of them replace the same mesh you can’t have both of them (boo).

Also in DA:I you can’t just copy and paste mods into an override folder you have to use either DAI Mod Manager or Frosty Mod Manager . Both of these are different and will only load different file types individually but they can be used together (I will show you how you how later onto this post)

Using DAI Mod Manager

Most mods for DA:I are daimods which means you use DAI Mod Manager to load them. 

First, install DAI Mod Manager. If you use the link I gave you, install the Tools Suite then you can download and boot up the manager from there.

Then, make a folder somewhere where you will put all the mods for DA:I. You can name this anything you like. I name mine’s “DAI Mods” lol

You download it and if it’s a zip/7z/rar you extract it (7z and rar files can be extracted using 7zip).

Open DAI Mod Manager and it will ask you for the path, so that’s where your DA:I game is located. For me it’s in C: > Program Files > Origin Games > Dragon Age Inquisition. If you use Origin it’s most likely there. Then select the game:

Once it’s loaded, it will ask for the mod path so select the folder you extracted all your files in:

The mods should all load and then hit merge! It’ll tell you if any conflict and if it does you can disable the mod the conflicts with the other. 

Again most descriptions will tell you what will conflict with what so you’ll know before downloading. 

If you want to change mods you have to disable the one you don’t want and re-merge again before loading that certain playthrough or starting the game. 

So if you have multiple quizzies like me lol, it could get tedious to go up the list and disable a mod you don’t use for a certain quizzie or if two quizzies use two hairs that replace the same mesh so what I do to keep them organized is I make separate folders for each quizzie with the mods they use like this:

So when you want to switch characters, just load that character’s folder in the mod path for DAI Mod Manager and it’s all there. 

Now the downside of using DAI Mod Manager is that the mods usually don’t work in DLCs. So you will have to disable them when entering Trespasser, Jaws of Hakkon and The Descent.

There’s a few workarounds, though they aren’t perfect. For Trespasser there are a list of hairs that will work and which certain races they’ll work for here. Complexions in that don’t mess too much with the specular could work in Trespasser, so this means complexions that don’t take away the shine will have a better chance of working (unfortunately if you dislike the shine your quizzie will have to look sweaty in Trespasser lmao). A lot of mod makers have included Trespasser friendly versions of their complexions.

For The Descent I found that if you turn mods off when you enter, then save at the first camp, exit the game, then turn the mods on, they’ll work for the rest of the DLC. 

I don’t know much about Jaws of Hakkon, that DLC tends to be testy with mods, but do know for a fact that the Tight Curls hair mesh works there (for female elves anyway). 

Using Frosty Mod Manager

Frosty loads fbmod files. There’s less mods for Frosty but it tends to be more DLC-friendly and Frosty Mod Maker can do more things.

So download Frosty Mod Manager and when it’s done, load it up. It will ask for a configuration and you just select the game again from the installation path like with DAI Mod Manager:

Just like with DAI Mod Manager, download your fbmods and make a folder for them just to keep them organized. As always the description will let you know if it’s for Frosty specifically.

 When you have them ready open up Frosty Mod Manager and hit import mods:

Select the mods you want and they’ll show up on the left side:

To apply a mod, select it and click apply mod:

And you can see on the right side that there’s a conflicts tab so you can click it and check to see if what you’re using will conflict with a mod!

Then hit launch and the game will load through Frosty. So if you want to use the Frosty mods, you have to load the game through it or else it won’t show up.

One thing I like about Frosty is that you can make multiple profiles on the program itself, so it’d be easier if you have multiple quizzies:

You can load daimods using Frosty as well. I personally have not tried it yet but my sister has and it’s worked for her - especially when it comes to hair meshes and I think it’ll have them work in DLCs too for the most part. However, I won’t recommend loading daimod complexions through Frosty because it tends to glitch for some reason and gives your quizzie this weird pixelated skin tone.

Using Both Frosty and DAI Mod Manager

Since there’s both pros and cons with each methods so I use them together. This method can be tedious but it’s not as complicated as it seems it’s just an extra step or two.

So if you want to use both, you start with DAI Mod Manager. Load your mods and merge as usual. When it’s done go to the game’s installation path (usually Program Files > Origin Games > Dragon Age Inquisition). Then, click the update folder.

These two folders are what you’re going to be working with:

What you do is you take the Patch folder and rename it into something. I usually rename it as “Patch do not delete” so I remember that it’s the original patch folder. Then you rename the Patch_ModManagerMerge as just “Patch”.

So it should look like this:

Then you load up Frosty, apply your mods and launch! If you did it right everything should load successfully. If not there could be some conflicts and unfortunately you just have to turn mods on and off to see what’s causing it.

The reason why I advise to name the original folder as “Patch do not delete” is because if you want to change mods you have to re-do the whole process again (which lol, I know blaaah). And before you open up DAI Mod Manager again you have to delete the Patch folder and rename “Patch do not delete” to Patch again (I know this is confusing ;-; lol if you need more clarification please let me know).

Then you go back up to the main Dragon Age Inquisition folder and find the ModData folder and delete it:

And finally you can load up DAI Mod Maker and switch out your mods then do the process again. 

It can be daunting and it requires a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of it and get a feel for what will work and what won’t it shouldn’t be too hard. 

And I highly recommend learning how to use Frosty because there’s been some awesome developments with what you can do. With making hair you can’t really add or delete faces/vertices so custom hair is usually just people editing what’s already there and working with what they have (and there are a lot of talented people who made it work SO WELL and made beautiful creations.)

But now there’s a beta tool for the newest version of Frosty Mod Maker (currently Patreon release only) and it allows you to load meshes, so people who have this have been able to port hair from Sims as well as make hair from scratch so there’s going to be more hair options in the future! (Although we still can’t load new meshes we have to replace existing ones).

Matt Giguere’s Top 10 Handheld Games of 2019

Handheld gaming is in a weird spot. Beyond the plethora of mobile devices running iOS or Android and the app store fronts they offer; the handheld market has now been distilled down to one major device in 2019. Lo and behold, Nintendo, once again sits alone on the hill. While the Switch has seen great gains in maintaining a constant flow of software on its platform, the vast majority of their releases are either mobile ports or older games from generations past. It is amazing on how much has been released so far, but what makes a handheld game a “handheld game” now anyway? When your choice can be a small bite sized game like BOXBOY! + BOXGIRL! or a massive single player game like Tales of Vesperia, there really isn’t much of a difference what a handheld platform can offer compared to the home consoles for the types of games that can be played. As the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PlayStation Vita sunset into their legacy years, there seems to be a wider line on what can be considered a handheld game.

Nintendo did release a portable only version of the Switch this year, dubbed the SwitchLite. Considering that most of my playtime has been in handheld mode, I picked one up shortly after release. After a few months of playtesting, I think this will be my go-to system for the foreseeable future. I adore the form factor size. The original Switch still works great for quick pick up and play in my home, but I find the new model easier to hold in my hands and store away when I’m travelling. The dedicated directional pad, as opposed to separate buttons because of the nature of the detachable joy-cons, is a big selling point for the myriad of 2D platformers now on the system. I sometimes miss the “HD Rumble” feedback that had to be cut, but that is a small gripe. If you don’t care for playing games on the big screen in a higher resolution and varying framerate, I highly recommend picking this dedicated handheld up.

Admittedly, a lot on my best of 2019 list are games that can be enjoyed on the big screen, especially with the convenience of the Switch’s hardware. Of the games I played this year, I think this smattering represents a healthy dose of what managed to present a case that gaming on the go is still well alive and ever changing.

Top 10 of 2019 or the Hollow Knight Memorial List*

*Sometimes when making a top list our favorite thing came out in a different year or is so clearly ahead it is a lock of number 1 across every critic. This year Hollow Knight from Team Cherry captivated me like nothing else that released this year. Alas, this game came out in 2017. So instead of placing it on my official list for 2019, it takes the honor of being my list’s name. This Metroidvania style exploration platformer is full of surprises, sometimes subverting my expectations when I thought there wasn’t anything left to uncover. If you have a Switch, I highly recommend checking out one of my favorite games in the genre since Metroid: Fusion.

10. My Friend Pedro (Switch, Xbox One, PC)

An action, score-based shooter that I’ve had my eye on for years since seeing the gif put out by publisher Devolver Digital and developer Dead Toast Entertainment. The nature of this very tricky to pull off and even harder to master game lies in its focus on style. Moving across short levels on a 2-D plane, you must, roll, spin, flip, kick, skate, and, of course, kill combo as many enemies to place a high score and a top rank. While there is a story to keep the drive of the game moving forward, I wouldn’t say that should be the guiding factor to check this out. Rather, I found the quick get up and quick play of a level or two perfect for on the go gaming. Once the controls click, this game really delivers on its promised “Bananas” style.

9. Untitled Goose Game (Switch, Xbox One, PS4, PC)

“What if Hitman, but a Goose?” is probably the most quoted pitch heard for this small, but very charming game by developer House House. In it you play as, well, a goose who terrorizes a small town from every front. From untying shoes so people trip to locking helpless victims in garages, no one is safe from this feathered menace! Okay, so the Hitman comparison is apt, minus the extreme brutality, for this sandbox-lite adventure. The best I can compare it to is an interactive toy; one that is unique in how the player can approach a situation and explore the possibilities of what can and will happen within the rules of the program. It might not have the deep experimentation of a larger game of its kind, but I found its calm and lighthearted nature makes this a very stress-free experience, especially when you are the one dealing out all the harassment.

8. SteamWorld Quest (Switch, PC)

I don’t normally go for card-based RPGs, but when Image & Form provide a new adventure in the SteamWorld universe, I had to check it out. This might be the one that changed my mind, because after several turns, I was hooked. The adventure itself keeps things relatively jovial with plenty of jokes and wit to keep the story moving forward. It can be easy to stick to one group of characters, a limit of three per battle, but I find more enjoyment in the battle system when different combinations are put into play. The battle system also provides linked combos that offer bonuses and stringing cards together in a row also adds more to the strategy. Building a potent strategy is where I found the most engagement in this RPG, and all the trappings around the edges made this one stand out in my mind. A good starting point in the genre for those curious.

7. Baba Is You (Switch, PC)

A tough logic puzzler I think goes the extra mile with its charm and style. You play as Baba. Or, rather, Baba is you, or a wall, or section of water, or a skull, or... well you get the point. The goal in each stage is to reach the “Win.” What is the “Win?” Most of the time it is a flag, but really it can be anything. Using a simple push function mechanic that many top-down puzzlers have used before, the twist comes in that you can have these sentence blocks to push around and affect the game’s logic. For example, if the winning object is out of reach by a wall that forces you stop (“Wall is Stop”) you can push one of the sentence blocks away so you can pass through the wall. Even making a sentence to “You is Win” will also result in a victory. The difficulty can be a bit stiff, but I would often find myself just thinking about a stuck puzzle while out and about and think of the solution as a sort of epiphany. Even when getting stuck on a tricky brain teaser, the game offers multiple paths so you can keep progressing through. Certainly, Baba Is You has been on my mind since first playing it.

6. What The Golf? (Apple Arcade, PC, Switch TBD)

If Desert Golf is the pinnacle zen of the golf sport genre, What The Golf? embodies its “party mindset.” Yes, it is golf, and yet, it becomes something more than just golf. Sometimes you will find yourself having to hop across a very familiar level. Other times you will have to coordinate trick shots while being an exploding barrel. And sometimes, there’s just good old-fashioned bowling. What The Golf? will keep you on your toes, especially if you are fond of video games released prior to this. I won’t spoil some of the surprises in store, but some of them had me in stitches from laughing so hard. It would be nice to fully outright buy this game on the iOS App Store, but for now, a subscription to Apple Arcade is the only way to play this on the go.

5. Sayonara Wild Hearts (Switch, Apple Arcade, PS4, PC)

Another Apple Arcade exclusive for mobile (you can also buy it on the Switch at this time), this one showcasing music and style. If there is one thing that counts in making an impression on me, it’s presentation. Sayonara Wild Hearts is described as a pop album video game; one you experience as much as you listen to. The format seems simple at first. Guide your character along the track and collect different items for points to rank a high score while also dodging obstacles. Soon though, things start to mix up as fast as the soundtrack’s BPMs start to pump up. While the touch controls are adequate, I think for certain spots, a physical controller would have been nice. However, there are movements that are far easier to pull off using a touch interface, such as time hits reminiscent of music games like Elite Beat Agents. This gem of a game needs to be experienced at least once, not only for the wonderful soundtrack, composed by Daniel Olsen and Jonathan Eng and featuring Linnea Olsson on vocals, but also to see the twists and turns the game takes. This little game surprised the hell out of me, and I think it will be one that I will revisit again based on its production.

4. Ape Out (Switch, PC)

Sometimes we all need to get out. Especially when you are an ape stuck in a cage. That’s the conceit of the top-down, twin stick, hyper violent, and super stylized game, Ape Out. There is one goal: Be the ape and get the hell out! The concept is very rudimentary which I feel allows the game to shine. You will have to run, dodge, grab and toss enemies to reach the exit while the only advantage is being able to take three hits before going down. Enemies have guns that the player can’t use in the typical way. Instead, grabbing a foe allows one immediate shot to be fired from the grappled target. Used strategically, it can get you out of a lot of close calls. Other enemies can have bombs or body armor to keep this from being too repetitive and thanks to the game’s art style, they all look distinct so there’s no confusion on who you are fighting. Levels are procedurally generated as well, so even thinking on memorizing enemy patterns doesn’t always work. The fluorescent color palette and very minimalist style, like that of a Saul Bass movie poster, highlights the chaos and violence without making it too gross or unappealing. Even the soundtrack is minimalistic, utilizing only jazz percussion that plays out dynamically as the action plays out in real time. A feast for the eyes and a challenge on the thumbs.

3. Katana Zero (Switch, PC)

Taking a page from one hit kill action games like Hotline Miami, Katana Zero plays out at first like a typical note from the genre, right down to its ‘80s aesthetic. You clear room after room of enemies, slashing with your katana, wall jumping to high points, and focusing time to slow down and either dodge or reflect projectiles. A lot of this game is a throwback thanks to its choice of graphics, 2D platforming and story points from movies like Drive and Leon: The Professional. It is thanks to the presentation that makes this game shine for me. The story, music, graphics and gameplay presentation are what makes Katana Zero so high on my list. Clearing rooms is fast paced and quick, with messing up only taking several seconds to get back into the fray. While the loop of the game can get a bit repetitive, there are plenty of surprises that change up the standard formula of the game as you progress. The story does a nice job of not only driving things forward, but also tying in gameplay concepts into the narrative. The music is a healthy blend of synthwave and some very heavy and experimental electronic tunes (one that I’ve had on repeat most of the year). The overall games is fairly short and ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but there are speedrunning modes and secrets to uncover from replaying. Katana Zero stands as one of the best independent games this year.

2. Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch)

There was a time when Fire Emblem was on the ropes, becoming a lagging franchise that was not connecting with strategy enthusiasts on the home consoles. Then in 2013, things changed with the release of Fire Emblem: Awakening on the 3DS. Nintendo and Intelligent Systems had intended that game to be the last in the series. Instead, we got another 3 (and 1/2) games released on the 3DS this past decade. Now it’s time to pass the torch onto the Switch and boy did they deliver on a packed adventure! Instead of just following one or two paths like most FE campaigns, Three Houses offer up to four different story playthroughs that each roughly takes about 50 hours or more to complete. There is also a vast amount of customization thanks to the setting being centered around a military school and teaching classes. If you love watching meters and bars fill up, there are tons of those to be had in Three Houses. Even though not every aspect is well thought out (the amiibo gazebo comes to mind, even though it is the best named mechanic), the cast of characters and support conversations (all fully voice acted) provide some rich storytelling from a character development standpoint. Do check out this game as it is one of the best in the series.

1. Tetris 99 (Switch)

“Where are we dropping, Blocks?” In a personal first for me, a multiplayer game has taken my number one spot. Tetris 99 is just that. Tetris. However, it’s you versus 98 other players in a battle royal style completion. Released as a free download to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers, it now has multiple versions that can be bought as well. Thanks to constant updates and weekend tournaments, the online community is still strong, so finding matches is quick and painless. Playing against such a wide number of challengers turns the typical Tetris strategy on its head. Racking up combos instead of quickly clearing lines, for example, is one way to secure victory, but leaving too many gaps and holes can prove disastrous if you suddenly become the target of a handful of players. Even though I have yet to secure a 1st place finish, the nature of Tetris keeps me coming back for more. Whether it’s facing against bots, friends, marathoning solo or playing the featured battle royal, this is a fun version of Tetris to be had.

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year. When else can you dress up in scary or funny costume, decorate your house with ghouls, ghosts, and goblins in an effort to scare people from coming to your home, but then try to bribe parents and children with sugary rewards if they dare to come up your steps, braving all that is scary! Each year I try to do something a bit different in terms of my decorations, but I always have a few things that I always include. And this year, I have a new addition that I think will truly add to the fun – the Jabberin’ Jack talking, singing, and joking animated pumpkin. (*Disclosure below) I understand that there is some tradition in picking out the truly perfect pumpkin for carving. And while it is a lot of fun scooping out the guts and carving that perfect scary, odd, or funny face, it is quite a project, one that I still do highly recommend doing with your kids. But after a certain point, as kids get older, it becomes a chore to find the pumpkin and the time to carve that perfect jack-o-lantern. As most of my kids have flown the coop, so to speak, or are deep in the college application process coupled with the last year of high school, unfortunately, that time of carving has moved on like a ghost. I now have to rely on easier methods of pumpkin-carving, or just not do it at all. When the folks at Mindscope Products asked me if I wanted to review their animated, singing, joking, and talking pumpkin – Jabberin’ Jack – (that didn’t require a huge carving process and had no clean-up), I jumped at the opportunity. And I did even ask my daughters if they thought having this talking pumpkin would be “cool” or not, I was met with a resounding “YES!” So, my pumpkin carving and display have evolved. It now has Jabberin’ Jack as the centerpiece. And, from my understanding, this animated pumpkin SOLD OUT extremely quickly last year. A quick warning – because of Jabberin’ Jack’s popularity, there have been many copycats and knockoffs produced, and those have been quite disappointing, to say the least, so only get yours from the proper places! What is Jabberin’ Jack? Jabberin’ Jack is a full-sized, talking, singing, joking animated pumpkin. How is that even possible? The guts of this pumpkin are not seeds and stringy matter. Instead, there is a small, short-throw projector and built-in speakers that provide the entertainment – sound and animation. From a size perspective, Jabberin’ Jack is about the size of a normal-sized jack-o-lantern. It is 11 inches high by 9 inches in diameter. It even has a green stem at the top, which, it turns out, is the ONLY assembly that is required for the entire pumpkin. Jack’s shell is a hard plastic that I feel will be able to withstand the trials of time. However, I do recommend saving the box for storage during the off-season (although with the stem attached, it doesn’t fit back into the box perfectly). And, while the shell is protective, you should only use it inside or under a covered porch – it isn’t weather resistant. Remember, water and electricity are not friends. Jabberin’ Jack does require a power source (more about that in a second). When Jabberin’ Jack is off, he actually does have a blank look on his face. That is to say, there is nothing displayed. From a distance, he looks basically like an uncarved pumpkin. But once you turn him on, he comes to life! On the back are an on-off switch and a micro-USB port. Jabberin’ Jack does come with a cable (I wish it was a bit longer) as well as a 5V-2.1A power adapter. For some reason, I thought that there were rechargeable batteries built-in, so I plugged it in for several hours to charge it up, only to later realize there were NO batteries. You just plug it in and turn it on. On Jack’s top are three buttons – volume up, volume down, and skip. But what exactly are you controlling with these buttons? Bringing Jabberin’ Jack to life! The real power and fun about Jabberin’ Jack happens when you plug him in and turn him on. The built-in mini projector displays an animated face on the front. This animated face is in the form of a pumpkin cut-out and not just one style of cut-out either. It can display scary, funny, and silly faces, depending on which character theme you choose. The carved-out faces do look like a traditional jack-o-lantern. There is a “candle” in the back, which cast a jumpy and jittery light on the “carved out” faces. But, these carvings animate as a joke is told, or a song is sung, making it look like Jabberin’ Jack is truly alive! There are three character themes – Spooky, Traditional, and Funny. And with each character theme, there are three built-in songs as well as over forty lines of Halloween-themed jokes and phrases. I have to admit, much of this recorded content is geared towards a young audience which means that you are safe to have Jabberin’ Jack displayed in homes with younger kids. Some things may be a bit scary for toddlers, but hey, this is Halloween, right? You can use the Skip button for cycling through all of the themes, songs, and animations to quickly find what you want. But I felt it was more fun to just let it play through all of the cycles as you get a little bit of everything without repeating anything for at least 70 minutes. Also, as my daughter and I were testing out some power supply options (see below), we did turn the volume all of the way down so that there was no talking, joking, or singing, just the animated jack-o-lantern faces being displayed and cycling through. So without sound, Jack is a great Halloween decoration piece. And it runs for 2 hours (or more) before it automatically shuts off for safety purposes. After running it for a couple of hours, Jack was still quite cool to the touch. You could barely detect any type of heat coming from the projector, even after an extended run-time. And when the projector is running, you really can’t hear it (especially when you have the volume all the way down). While the projector is bright enough to see the animated face during the day, I highly recommend using Jack at night, as he definitely does appear like a real pumpkin from a distance. Power ideas for Jabberin’ Jack As I mentioned, Jabberin’ Jack does come with a power supply (a 5V-2.1A adapter) as well as a fairly short, micro-USB cable. And remember, I thought that it had rechargeable batteries, thinking that I could charge it up and put it just about anywhere. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have batteries, and you do need to have a plug nearby. Sometimes this isn’t ideal for Halloween decorations as many displays require plugs and extension cords. So I got to thinking. You can either purchase a very long micro-USB cable which would allow you to place Jabberin’ Jack in more locations. Or, you could do what I tested out. Use a portable battery! I happened to have a high-capacity portable battery with a 20,000 mAh rating, good for many smartphone and tablet charges. One of the USB-A ports is rated for 5W. So, not being an electrical engineer, I figured I would test to see if 1) the portable battery could power Jabberin’ Jack and 2) how long could Jabberin’ Jack run off of this type of power supply. The short, non-scientific results were: yes, I could power Jabberin’ Jack just fine – complete with sound and projector, and the 20,000 mAh capacity battery could power Jabberin’ Jack for several hours (more than a Halloween night). In fact, we kept Jack running for more than 2 hours, and the battery barely dropped one bar in capacity. Using a portable battery essentially untethers Jack from the cord and plug. Again, however, be sure you use this solution in an indoor or covered location. Use a reputable rechargeable battery. And test it out with adult supervision. Batteries are NOT toys! Where can you get Jabberin’ Jack? As I mentioned, Jabberin’ Jack was a HOT item last year and sold out very quickly. So be sure you purchase from a reliable and reputable source. This just adds a different level of pumpkin to your spooky display! The Best Nintendo Switch Controller Review

The Pro Controller is fine.

I still recommend it to most people

but if you play a lot of 2D games that the D-Pad placement

just isn't gonna cut it. 8BitDo is been making

fantastic Deepak controllers for a while now.

I originally recommended the old SN30

if you wanted to play a lot of 2D games.

Its biggest flaw was it's ergonomics, making it hard to play

3D games with its thumb sticks.

They fixed that with the release of the SN30 Pro+

a near-perfect controller that quickly became

my favorite controller for the Switch.

I used it so much that I ran it into the ground

and had to buy a new one recently. Almost two years later,

they finally released an updated version,

simply called the 8BitDo Pro 2.

Thank God that name was starting to be a mouthful.

This version adds a lot

to the already fantastic Pro Controller alternative.

If you are on the fence about getting one before,

this one will for sure give you

a couple of pretty good reasons to reconsider.

So if you're new here

the biggest reason why I recommend this controller

is because of the D-pad. It's perfectly clicky.

It feels almost exactly like an original S.N.E.S controller

but you know, newer obviously. But it also has

all of the makings of a great modern controller.

It's thumb sticks feel almost exactly

like a DualShock 4 thumb sticks, making this a great option

for 3D games if you need something that could do both.

Here's something I often forget to mention.

It comes with a rechargeable battery, but it can be removed

and replaced with two double A's if you're in a bind,

something Microsoft should take note of.

It also has great motion controls and rumble.

The only thing that it's missing

that the Nintendo Pro Controller has is NFC.

But at the significantly lower price point,

are you really gonna be missing NFC that much?

The original SN30 Pro+ was and still is $45.

This new one bumps the price up to $50,

which is still a reasonable price

and some harsh competition for Nintendo's $70 controller.

It also works on Switch, Windows, Mac, Android,

and Raspberry Pi via Bluetooth, which is great

if you wanna play emulators or 2D games via Steam.

It's an all-around great controller

and I haven't even mentioned any of the new features yet.

Everything that I've said is also available

on the older $45 model.

The Pro 2 Sports 2 assignable back buttons.

This is a very welcome addition

and something I wish more controllers included.

My only gripe here is that

they're a little too easy to press. They're very large.

It's very difficult to grip the controller

without touching these buttons with your middle fingers.

In an intense game of Mario Maker

I accidentally press these buttons many times.

Luckily, by default they're assigned to nothing.

So pressing them did nothing at all.

You can assign functions to these buttons

using the brand new 8BitDo companion app.

In fact, you can remap all of the buttons

using the companion app.

And there are three different assignable profiles

that you can swap between on the fly.

Technically there's four because

there's just a baseline default one which is great

for when you don't wanna accidentally hit the back buttons.

Pressing this button right here switches between the modes.

There's off one, two and three.

In addition to remapping the buttons,

this software also allows you to fix the sticks dead zones.

It's also supposed to let you fix the trigger sensitivity,

but I couldn't figure out how to do that in the app.

I can only figure out how to do that on the desktop version.

But I like having my trigger sensitivity set really high

so they're like hair triggers because almost no Switch games

registered trigger sensitivity anyway.

Upon further review it seems that they disabled

the trigger sensitivity tab for the Switch.

So they got rid of trigger sensitivity

entirely for the Switch which is weird

'cause there are games that could still use it.

But if you go to Android or DInput or whatever,

it shows the trigger sensitivity, which is very strange.

You can also adjust vibration levels and of course,

macros, which go great with the new additional back buttons.

Previously, I used to assign macros to the share button.

Now I don't have to, unfortunately, the macro functionality

still, isn't very intuitive. You have to program it yourself

in the app, one button at a time. You can set the timings

between button presses but that's way harder to do

than just inputting a macro yourself on the controller

and having it record your inputs.

Something I've seen in a few other devices lately.

I hope that 8BitDo can eventually update

the Ultimate software and the Pro 2's firmware

to have this sort of functionality.

Because right now the macro function is pretty much

all only useful for like fighting games.

They did add the ability

to use thumb stick inputs for macros.

So if you have more patience than me

you can figure out some macros for Smash Brothers.

What might be more useful is assigning a turbo button

which is useful for many games, namely Animal Crossing.

I have a whole video on that if you're interested.

The old Pro+ had a turbo function but with this new Pro 2,

it might be worth it to assign one of the back buttons

to enable the turbo function. You can also have

the other back button assigned to hold.

So it will hold down a button forever.

So you can breeze through long menus or something.

Another useful feature that was recently added.

You can set the left stick to be swapped with the D-pad.

This is useful for games like Link's Awakening,

which should have D-pad support, but it doesn't.

There's also an option

to swap the right stick with the triggers.

I think that's some fighting games.

But my favorite part about this new mobile app

is that it allows you to change your settings on the fly.

You don't have to disconnect it from your Switch at all.

You can have it connected to your Switch

and the app at the same time.

This is something that you could not do

with the previous desktop app. This is huge for figuring out

the timing of macros or finding out the right button mapping

for yourself and immediately trying it out in the field.

One of my least favorite things

about wireless controllers like this

is connecting it to the Switch.

I often find myself just (indistinct) the button

till it finally comes up.

This controller alleviates some of that pain

by adding a mode switch on the back.

On the previous Pro+ you had to hold Start and Y

to enter switch mode. Windows, Android, and iOS,

all had different corresponding face buttons.

You expect me to remember all those.

There was also no indication

what mode you were currently in.

Now it's as easy as just flipping the switch.

You have Nintendo Switch, Apple DInput and XInput.

XInput is for Windows and Android.

DInput is for like old. I don't know it's

just probably don't worry about it. Other than all that

the only other real difference is it's enhanced grip

which is really just a textured back

similar to the textured back

of the new DualSense controller.

Other than that, this controller feels exactly the same

as the old SN30 Pro+ controller.

Switching between the two reveals that the face buttons

feel more responsive on the newer one.

Maybe it's because it's newer

and I used the shit out of my old one.

It's hard to tell.

- Oh no. - Hit the button, dude.

I think this controller.

You know, I'll try, I'll try the top ones.

The buttons, the build quality, everything feels the same.

The Pro 2 comes in gray, black and GB edition.

I pre-ordered myself the Game Boy looking one

so I'll be getting that one when it eventually comes out.

But 8BitDo sent me their gray edition one, which looks like

it's attempting to resemble a PlayStation 1 controller.

It's an okay design. The A, B, X, Y buttons

colored like PlayStation buttons is like unsettling.

It's like a sin. The strongest design that they have

is definitely the Game Boy looking at one.

8BitDo used to have controllers that looked almost exactly

like Super Nintendo and N.E.S controllers,

but I'm sure they strayed away from that

so that they weren't bullied by Nintendo's lawyers.

It's also probably why they don't have

a Super Nintendo looking one at all anymore.

But I mean, the feel of the controller

is more important than anything else. And for 2D games,

there's nothing better than this,

until you find your Lord and Savior keyboard keys baby.

So if you haven't yet picked yourself up a 8BitDo controller

now might be the time to make the jump.

$5 extra for the back buttons,

the updated Ultimate software, the mode switch,

the custom profiles that can switch on the fly.

Yeah, I'd say it's worth it to get this version

over the original or Pro. Now is it worth upgrading to

if you already have an original SN30 Pro+.

That I'm not sure about.

Maybe if yours is starting to feel like shitty.

I know mine started to feel like

a little unresponsive, I guess.

I don't know how to describe it other than

it just got shitty and then I had to buy a new one.

But if you're perfectly content with your original SN30 Pro+

then it's probably not worth dropping an extra $50

on a brand new controller. It's like 90% the same controller

and about 10% new hotness. Or maybe I'm sure

you could find a way to justify it.

Maybe you could teach your grandma how to do Kaizo Mario.

The latest macOS updates, which can include updates to Boot Camp Assistant. You will use Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 10.

64GB or more free storage space on your Mac startup disk:

Your Mac can have as little as 64GB of free storage space, but at least 128GB of free storage space provides the best experience. Automatic Windows updates require that much space or more.

If you have an iMac Pro or Mac Pro with 128GB of memory (RAM) or more, your startup disk needs at least as much free storage space as your Mac has memory.2

An external USB flash drive with a storage capacity of 16GB or more, unless you're using a Mac that doesn't need a flash drive to install Windows.

How to install Windows 10 on Mac

To install Windows, use Boot Camp Assistant, which is included with your Mac.

1. Check your Secure Boot setting

Learn how to check your Secure Boot setting. The default Secure Boot setting is Full Security. If you changed it to No Security, change it back to Full Security before installing Windows. After installing Windows, you can use any Secure Boot setting without affecting your ability to start up from Windows.

2. Use Boot Camp Assistant to create a Windows partition

Open Boot Camp Assistant, which is in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder. Follow the onscreen instructions.

If you're asked to insert a USB drive, plug your USB flash drive into your Mac. Boot Camp Assistant will use it to create a bootable USB drive for Windows installation.

When Boot Camp Assistant asks you to set the size of the Windows partition, remember the minimum storage-space requirements in the previous section. Set a partition size that meets your needs, because you can't change its size later.

3. Format the Windows (BOOTCAMP) partition

When Boot Camp Assistant finishes, your Mac restarts to the Windows installer. If the installer asks where to install Windows, select the BOOTCAMP partition and click Format. In most cases, the installer selects and formats the BOOTCAMP partition automatically.

4. Install Windows

Unplug any external devices that aren't necessary during installation. Then click Next and follow the onscreen instructions to begin installing Windows.

5. Use the Boot Camp installer in Windows

After Windows installation completes, your Mac starts up in Windows and opens a ”Welcome to the Boot Camp installer” window. Follow the onscreen instructions to install Boot Camp and Windows support software (drivers). You will be asked to restart when done.

If the Boot Camp installer never opens, open the Boot Camp installer manually and use it to complete Boot Camp installation.

If you have an external display connected to a Thunderbolt 3 port on your Mac, the display will be blank (black, gray, or blue) for up to 2 minutes during installation.

How to switch between Windows and macOS

Restart, then press and hold the Option (or Alt) ⌥ key during startup to switch between Windows and macOS.

CoC is similar to other previous strategy and defense games in that you build and protect a base, where you are occasionally attacked by other clans and need to defend yourself. Why Play Clash of Clans On Your Mac?

I know what the counterarguments are: people have their iPhones or Androids with them pretty much anywhere and everywhere they go. So why would you want to play this popular game on your Mac? I’ll give you a few great reasons why you want to follow the steps below, no matter if you use a Macbook Pro, Macbook Air, iMac or Mac Pro.

Your Mac has a bigger screen than your iPhone, Android, or iPad screen. Therefore, simply having more real estate to play with makes the whole Clash of Clans gaming experience better on a Mac. That is especially true if you have a huge 27″ iMac with Retina Display. After all, you don’t want to constantly have to zoom in, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, swipe, zoom out (lather, rinse repeat) just to see what’s going on in your kingdom, when you can have a pretty good idea at one glance.

Play when you’re at work or at your desk, you don’t have to bring out your phone. You can play when you get bored while writing that school paper or finishing up a project. It’s good to take 15 minute breaks and playing CoC can be a great way to relax while at your computer. Bringing out your phone, turning it sideways, and poking at it for fifteen minutes will let everybody know what you’re doing. But depending on how your monitor is angled, nobody has to know you’re taking a little brain-break with your favorite game.

Any Mac will have a better processor if it’s new compared to a mobile device, so your game will be smoother, faster, and overall better graphics compared to most mobile devices. Granted, there are certain exceptions comparing a brand new iPhone 6 Plus to an old Macbook.

Lastly, it’s a great option, just because you can. Why not have more options and places to play the game you love and have more flexibility on when and where you login and play.

Now, let’s get into the meat of why you came to this page in the first place. I’ll outline your options below with a few tips and tricks to make it run more smoothly.

Clash of Clans For Mac Using Bootcamp

One of the easiest ways to run Clash of Clans is to simply run Windows on your Mac and then download Andyroid, a commonly used and stable environment. This option requires a working copy of Windows operating system to install on your computer so make sure you have one.

One great thing about Macs is that they have the app Bootcamp preinstalled on them. Basically, it walks you through very easily how to partition and install Windows onto your Mac with very little work. From there, you have a lot more options when running Windows. Also, you can run any other Windows software program you desire.

Get yourself a copy of Windows 7 or 8 to install. It’s easiest if you get a copy that is preinstalled onto a thumb drive that you can just put in your Mac.

Once you have the copy of Windows, install it on your Mac by opening up the Bootcamp Assistant and going through the instructions. They are very straight forward and should be easy to follow. However, this may take a bit of time so make sure you have an hour or more.

Now that you have Windows on your Mac, open up Bootcamp and run Windows. From there, head over to Andyroid and click the download button.

Once you have Andyroid installed onto your Windows platform, open it up and follow the setup instructions.

You will need to sign in with a Google Play account, so make sure you have one before you set it up.

After setting it up, search for Clash of Clans in Andyroid and click the download button.

Double click CoC and you’ll be up and running in no time!

It’s as easy as that. Super quick and simple. However, it requires that you buy a copy of Windows to run the app. Below, I will outline a completely free option if you don’t want to purchase anything. Both methods are completely valid but have various advantages and disadvantages.

Play Clash of Clans Using Genymotion

Now, I will walk you through the my favorite way to get Clash of Clans on your Mac and what I use on my Macbook Pro. Make sure you follow these steps exactly as I write them, it’s easy to miss a step and it won’t wind up working. I’ve tested this method several times and it works flawlessly if followed correctly.

You will need Genymotion, along with Virtual Box. Both are completely free, but you may need to sign up to get the apps to work.

Tip: You may want to change the resolution of your computer to around 800 x 1280 and at 320 dpi so it looks better and fills up more of the screen. Play around with a few different resolutions to see what looks the best.

Download Genymotion for your Mac and sign up for a Genymotion account. You need to sign up in order for the app to work but it’s free.

Head over to VirtualBox and download the app from this line “VirtualBox 4.3.20 for OS X hosts x86/amd64” onto your computer.

Open and install both Genymotion and Virtual Box onto your Mac by double clicking the dmg file and going through the install steps.

Launch Genymotion and signin into your account so you can get a list of potential smartphones to emulate. You can choose any one of the number of devices, but I recommend Custom Tablet.

Choose Custom Tablet to emulate but don’t start the device yet.

Now, you’ll want to head over to Virtual Box and select the Custom Tablet you chose initially in Genymotion.

From there, right click and choose Settings.

Change basicmemory to 2048mb and videomemory to 128mb. This is important!

Head back to Genymotion and change the settings to base memory of 2048mb and screen resolution you want.

Start the virtual device and make sure to signinto your Google Play account.

From there, you may find that GoogleApps is not appearing, if not do a search for Google Apps and download it.

DownloadClashofClans and drag and drop it into Genymotion so that you can star to play.

Alternatives: Netbook or iPod

If you find that the methods above are too cumbersome and you would rather not have to deal with all these issues there is a very easy solution but costs more than the ones above. One option is to buy a cheap Netbook from Best Buy or head over to Amazon or Newegg for a new computer.

You’ll be amazed that you can find a fully functioning PC running Windows for $200. Granted, you will find that it doesn’t have a ton of memory, RAM, or processor speed but it will be plenty if you just want to use it to play CoC. This way you won’t have to create all these work arounds to get the app to work on your Mac.

The last alternative I would suggest is to get a new or used iPod Touch. A brand new one costs $199 and will be able to run Clash of Clans on its native platform. You won’t have to work with any trouble and it will play perfectly. You can also look for a used iPod Touch for cheaper if you prefer that option. Both of these are good if you don’t want to mess with all the steps above. Like most things, though, you have to pay for convenience.

actually, this post will be useful for nintendo fans because i got some obscure game recommendations to make!!! if you're tired of having to wait for a new zelda/kirby/mario/pokemon etc etc, here's some obscure games you should check out that Aren't mario or zelda. some of these will include announcements made at last night's direct, but i will try to diversify and include some more obscure games Nobody talks about

these will be divided up into three two categories, "the Not mario/sonic" & "the Not zelda/obscube rpgs", and the "other obscure games that don't fit into the last 2 categories"

and, if you'd like, you can always list your recommendations for obscure video games that nobody really seems to talk about if you want at the bottom of this post!!

so, let's begin!! here are some not mario/sonics that you should check out

wario land

ok, so out of all the mario franchise spinoffs that i'd consider severely underrated and obscure would have to be the wario land series, since these were all released on the game boy (advanced) mostly, with the last title being a wii release in 2007. and i know this sounds like a shitpost that i'm starting off this list with wario, but trust me when i say that these wario land games are gold. you got really solid platforming, and unique for a nintendo platformer, the goal this time isn't to simply reach the other side of the level, but to explore your area and collect as much as treasure as you may find. these games got a really great style (take a look at wario land: shake it for the wii, a game with fully hand drawn animation), they've got a good sense of humor, one of these titles were called the best virtual boy game (which is something you'd never expect to come from the controversial virtual boy), and the gameplay is just fun. certainly check this out if you're more familiar with mario, but want to play as wario instead

donkey kong country

would it be safe to call donkey kong country as a whole obscure??? in terms of nintendo games, i'd say so.

i mean, yea, you can't ignore the cultural milestone that was the DK rap, that's for sure, but besides that, nobodys really seem to play the games. they're historically significant in the fact that the first game blew up with it's ahead of time pre-rendered 3d models on an otherwise early 90s console. each game is packed to the brim with so many unique characters (from funky kong, to dk's cranky old dad cranky kong, to everyones favorite colonist croc, king k rool), and this series was popular enough to even have a cartoon show.

and the show, just like the games, were ahead of their time for featuring 3d motion capture animation that wouldn't even be used extensively in movies until the lord of the rings captured everybody's imagination with gollum. the soundtrack, beyond the dk rap, is really killer too, and i'd highly recommend checking it out

now, i'd call this obscure, as even though the donkey kong country had a healthy life in the 90s, by the 2000s & 2010s, dk content was really running dry. the latest dk games, donkey kong country returns for the wii, and even donkey kong country: tropical freeze for the wii u, have been called some of the best 2d platformers in recent years; and yet, nobody bought tropical freeze as it was only on the wii u. thankfully, tropical freeze did get a port to the switch starring funky kong, so if you ever wanted to play what many have considered one of the best platformers in recent years, you may be able to

klonoa

literally the reason why i created this post, and you've certainly seen this announced at last night's nintendo direct (as well as me posting about it last night, hehe). i'd still highly recommend checking out these games: klonoa's the most little guy ever, these are really unique 2.5d platformers that play more like a combination of kirby and yoshi's island if you're a fan of those games, and there's just a certain warmness and familiarity to these games that you'd never feel quite right with modern nintendo releases (quite ironic, seeing as how these games were originally released on the playstation). definitely give these games a try if you're down for an easier experience than say. mario sunshine.

if you've got a switch, then you should be able to try these remakes out when they drop on july 8th!!

ok, Now we're talking about real obscure titles that nobody ever talks about!!! plok may seem like nothing too unremarkable; it's a game where you play as this blob guy where you throw your body parts to attack enemies. the graphics look appealing for what they may look like on the snes. what makes this truly stand out from the rest on this post???

the soundtrack. the soundtrack is a very good reason to check out this game.

this game's soundtrack is composed by tim follin. if that name may seem recognizable, it's because he composed the soundtrack for solstice: a game purely remembered for this post right here. (if you're scared of links, its the title music for an nes game that goes way too hard for the hardware it was on)

tim follin would absolutely go for some bangers on plok! for the super nintendo and absolutely test the limits of the system: here's a little taste. definitely check out this game's soundtrack if you're interested

nights into dreams

yea. if you've followed my blog for about a year, you've heard me talk about nights into dreams. and if you haven't, all i can say is to check it out. it's without a doubt one of the most unique platformer games i've ever played and one of the most obscure to come from sega. all the characters in the game are canonically nonbinary (the only exceptions are the kids), it's probably one of the few games that i'd say play with the dream concept to it's fullest for the hardware it was made for, the character designs were very creative, there's just a lot to love about this game.

now we're truly jumping into the world of obscure sega games nobody ever talks about with ristar!! built off of sonic 1's engine, this is a beautifully unique game for the sega genesis where you're main abilities are your long, stretchable arms that you can use to attack enemies. i'd call this sega's answer to donkey kong country and kirby, but it's way more unique than that; down to it's character designs, music, and world. i'd highly recommend checking it out if you wanna play a sega genesis/mega drive platformer that isnt sonic

here are some other quick mentions since this post is getting too long (and im not super familiar with these other ones)!!! and i still want to give rpgs their own section:

rocket knight adventures: a game where you play as an opossum knight flying around with a rocket!! i've heard the control scheme is really good for the sega genesis/mega drive and the rocket knight himself looks like another little guy

pulseman: ironically enough, this is a game made by game freak!! you may have known these as the pokemon people, but before they made pokemon, they also made games for the nes & snes and yes, the sega genesis. this is one of them!!

tembo the badass elephant: yes, you read that title right, and yes, this is a game also made by game freak that sega released. this game was actually made by the first american pokemon designer, james turner, who designed the fan favorites shadow lugia & obstagoon from sword/shield (as well as a few more pokemon from black & white, like the golett, vanillite, and vullaby line)

drill dozer: yes, another platformer made by game freak, but this one has been called the best platformer for the game boy advance, so hey!! that's something (idk much about this game, i just think it looks pretty)

mad rat dead: a Very unique beat rhythm platformer that i'd highly recommend off the art style and soundtrack alone. its currently on switch & ps4!!! (ps5 ig through backwards compatiblity)

psychonauts: yes, even though people have been going crazy for it's sequel last year, mind you. its literally the third game in the series (if you count the vr spinoff as its own game), so i'd consider it obscure enough that it isnt as recognizable as mario/sonic

now time for the Not zeldas, aka obscure rpgs that arent final fantasy

secret of evermore

now, for sure, this would have to be one of square's most obscure and often underlooked rpgs released for the super nintendo before they moved to the playstation. not only was this released around the end of the super nintendo's life at the time, but this was one of the few games made exclusively in america, and as such, it actually had the reverse situation for many obscure square games at the time; instead of it being released exclusively in japan, this was released around the world Except for japan. a japanese release was planned, but was cancelled at the last minute. so, we got a rather unique case for a 90s square rpg

not only that, but it has some rather unique connections to secret of mana without it being directly a sequel to it, like bringing back the ring menu system from that game, as well as introducing a very unique alchemy system to the game. and; ok, while i truly don't know much about the game, as i'm writing this, i'm listening to the soundtrack, and the ambience is just. mwah!!! it's nothing that you've quite heard in a square game at that time. so if you wanna play one of the only few square games made in the west, then this is surely your pick

the mother/earthbound series

yes, you may know earthbound. yes, ness has appeared in smash with lucas and does a bow, saying "OKAY!". yes, you heard about how influential this game was to undertale, arguably one of the most biggest and important games in the past decade. but have you actually played it???

i would argue that, even when compared to some of nintendo's bigger series, the mother series would definitely have to be pretty obscure. its one of the only few original rpg series nintendo themselves have published before pokemon or even fire emblem, the only game to have gotten a western release at the time was mother 2, aka, earthbound, and mother 3 still hasn't gotten released outside of japan yet. yes, the wikipedia page talking about earthbound is still correct in saying that earthbound only has a cult following simply because nintendo would rather want to ignore the series as much as possible when compared to mario or pokemon or zelda

despite that, earthbound has gotten acclaim for being quite a unique rpg released at the time for the super nintendo and has been incredibly influential to so so so so many important indie games (famous examples including undertale and yume nikki), and thankfully these games are still available on the wii u & switch (through the nso nes & snes service), save for mother 3. but yea!! definitely check out these games if you want a true obscure nintendo experience

final fantasy mystic quest

ok, yes, i said i wouldn't bring up final fantasy in here since there are the obscure games to check out that Aren't final fantasy. however, even in the final fantasy series, this game in particular is a "black sheep" as it was designed with the main intention of getting more people into playing final fantasy. and as such, this game was designed to be a lot more easier and simpler than the likes of final fantasy 4, with a simple plot, a small cast, and an even simpler battle system. so, ok, this game isn't as highly regarded as some other snes-era square games, but this game is notable as it's one of the few easier final fantasy titles by design as well as having a pretty metal soundtrack when compared to other rpgs at the time. so hey!! another good soundtrack to check out, even if you dont wanna check out the game its from

bahamut lagoon

now, i'll be entirely honest with you. i don't know anything about this game. the most i know about this game is that it's a mid 90s square tactical rpg where you raise dragons and command them to fight other dragons. ok, that actually seems really cool, but i figured i should bahamut lagoon it's own section solely because of the story connected to the fan translation to this

as this game was japan-only at the time, it never got a proper translation. that was, until a couple years later, when a programmer by the name "Near" began working on a fan translation for it while they worked on the infamous bsnes emulator. if you wanna read up on the whole story, here's a link to it. it's extremely interesting and really gives you depth to the history of not only super nintendo emulation in the late 90s, but even attempting to translate a game that never got released outside of japan. if you'd like to celebrate their life's accomplishments (as they have cut theirs short last year), then absolutely check out their translation of bahamut lagoon whenever youre able to

final fantasy 5

ok, ok, so i know i said no final fantasy before, but i would consider final fantasy 5 to be. the most overlooked of the final fantasy snes trilogy. and this is coming from a huge final fantasy 6 fan. uniquely for an snes ff game, you're able to customize your partys class's just like in final fantasy 3 (although, your characters will be predetermined at the start, compared to the character creation from ff 1, 3 & 14). and overall, ive just heard really good things about this one. people have called this one of the best final fantasy games up there with final fantasy 6, which is saying alot to me personally. besides that, this game doesn't really seem to get the huge following games like final fantasy 4 & 6 get. thankfully, it was just released on steam not too long ago if you wanna try it out!!

figured i should give this game another shout out after the remake announcement from last night's direct. not only does this game have a unique of telling it's narrative in an rpg at the time (said narrative is split between 8 different characters), but it would be the first major game yoko shimomura would compose: she'd later compose the soundtracks for super mario rpg, kingdom hearts, & the mario & luigi games. so, if you'd like to check out this remake on the switch, then definitely keep your calendars updated for july 22nd

on another side note, one of the songs from this game, megalomania, directly inspired toby fox's most popular creation ever, as well as the impact this song would leave on popular culture for at least the past decade

moon: remix rpg adventure

i wanna give this game another shout out. it wasn't announced in a recent direct, but i'd figure since we're talking about undertale, i'd better bring up another underappreciated rpg that heavily inspired it

not actually developed by square, but by another smaller company, moon remix rpg adventure would be groundbreaking at the time for breaking many of the conventions and tropes popularized in rpgs. in this game, you gain love by being nice to the villagers and monsters around you, and "the hero" is the villain of the story: by ransacking people's houses without permission to find "items", and slaying every monster that stands in his way, even if they mean no harm

the various tropes this game would break would heavily inspire toby fox to develop undertale's main defining antirpg characteristics its known for, and one of the main devs from this game - yoshiro kimura - would later go on to make chulip for the ps2 & little king's story for the wii, later developing his own indie studio.

but if youre worried over how you wont be able to play this anymore (since it was a ps1 japan-exclusive game), don't worry. the original developer not only released a port and a localization to the west for the switch, but it just got a release on steam right now, with a ps4 & ps5 release planned in the future

so if you wanna check it out, now you're able to!!

here's some more quick mentions because there's really way too many obscure rpgs that people don't seem to talk about as much as say. final fantasy or person of a:

other: her loving embrace: OMG OMG OMG OMG i just need to talk about this game again. its an rpg where battles are done platformer style, which is already quite unique, but the best part about it would have to be the soundtrack. holy shit, if you haven't listened to the other demo soundtrack, i'd highly recommend checking it out. the genesis/mega drive never sounded better (the games not out yet, but the steam page said it should come out this year)

super robot wars: if youre a mecha anime fan and want a tactical rpg, then look no further than super robot wars!! a series thats been going on since 1991, this is a tactical rpg series thats the smash of mecha anime: except there are even more of them and none of them have been released to the west til the latest one, as its on steam

trials of mana (the 2d original): another obscure square snes game, this was the third game made for the mana series that never got a proper release outside of japan. thankfully, when the original trilogy was ported to the switch, it would get a proper translation before the 3d remake. what makes this game stand out in particular was how beautiful it looked for a snes game, which i can stand by (this would be a great time to drop a screenshot of the snes original game. if only i could post more than 10 pics in a reblog)

parasite eve: a very unique rpg made by square in the 90s, this would combine survival horror aspects seen in games at the time (like resident evil) with the battle system of your typical square game. this really does stand out as one of the only few horror rpgs square would make at the time, but it currently only has two sequels, a book and a film to its name

racing lagoon: ok, idk anything about this game, i'll be straight forward with you, but from what i read its a racing game with rpg battles??? ok, thats new. its another square game that never got released outside of japan, although it did get a fan translation not too long ago

the world ends with you/neo twewy: unfortunately, even though the ds game was beloved and well known, apparently the sequel didn't sell well??? ??????? would this new game count as obscure?????? idek, but if you want to play a unique rpg with a unique art style made by mr kingdom hearts tetsuya nomura himself, uhhh go crazy go stupid!!! the first two games are currently available on switch, ps4, and the epic games store if you wanna check them out!!!

and honestly, if you wanna support newer obscure games, then just check out what indie developers recommend. they generally have great tastes, and they get inspired by games nobody generally cares or talks about, while they also share their friends/fellow devs new projects. who knows if the new game your favorite indie dev shares on their twitter could be the next big thing!!!

Llano MicroDock Design and Ports

Aesthetically, the MicroDock is nothing special. In fact, it looks like every other USB-C hub out there. Not entirely surprising given that's Llano's specialty. But open closer inspection, the selection of ports tells a different story–and the real magic is hidden away inside anyway.

On one end is a short USB-C cable. This plugs directly into your Nintendo Switch USB-C port on the bottom edge. At this point, it's worth noting that this is only compatible with the Switch, not the Switch Lite. The Switch Lite cannot be output to a TV, regardless of what adaptor you use—it simply doesn't have the hardware capable of doing that.

On the opposite end is a full-size HDMI port.  No cable is supplied, but any cable should be sufficient since the Switch is only capable of outputting a maximum 1080pHD.

Before you can output anything though, you'll also need to plug your original Switch charger into the USB-C port on the side of the MicroDock. It's the only USB-C port on there, but also labeled on the underside with a lightning bolt. The MicroDock passes this through to the Switch, and presents itself as an original charger, so there should be no issues with under/overvoltage. Using third party adaptors with a Switch has always been a bit of a concern, with stories of devices being bricked thanks to unofficial chargers. Use the official Switch charger alongside the MicroDock and you'll be safe.

Lanno MicroDock TV Output

With the HDMI and USB-C charger plugged in, the MicroDock will act just as the original Dock does, allowing you to play on the big screen at the full HD 60FPS resolution.

In my experience, there was no discernible lag when using the Llano MicroDock for big screen play. I found plugging in the HDMI and charger to the MicroDock first, then plugging the USB-C cable into the Switch, worked most reliably, requiring only a few seconds for the TV input to activate.

It's worth noting that any limitations the Switch introduces with docked play are also present when using the MicroDock. Despite the fact that you could feasibly use the Switch handheld as is with the MicroDock attached, the Switch disables any attached joy-cons.  So they will need to disconnected and slotted onto an external controller shell (or each used handheld).

Switch Game Streaming

The real magic comes from the additional USB-A port you'll find next to the USB-C charging port. A USB-A to USB-A cable was supplied in our package, along with a USB-C adaptor, though it's not clear if this will be in the final retail release. Regardless, it's a generic cable that's easy to source or replace.

Just plug this cable into your PC or Mac, and open up your favorite game capture and streaming software. Since the MicroDock presents as a standard USB video capture device, and doesn't require any additional drivers, it should work with any software. We tested with OBS, and there was nothing to configure–everything just worked after adding a new video and audio interface. Video is captured at the full HD resolution, at 60 frames-per-second. There's no loss in quality from what the Switch is capable of.

Of course, there is a lag of a second or so for the recorded footage. This is not unusual with any video capture device. The on-screen action on the TV remained perfectly in sync. You can then record or stream your gameplay to your favorite services. You can view samples of recorded gameplay in our review video.

  Direct Audio Capture and Output

One issue streamers face with any capture solution is the inherent lag between the game actions and your voice input on the PC software side. A second or two might not sound like much but can really sound awkward at critical moments.

The MicroDock avoids the audio input lag problem by shifting the microphone input onto the hardware side of things. On the side opposite to the USB ports, you'll find two 3.5mm stereo ports: one for your microphone, and one for headphones, so any analog gaming headset can be plugged directly into it. You don't need to configure additional audio inputs within your streaming system—it's automatically mixed into the game audio.

This approach might also be seen as a negative, though: you can't configure the audio level even if you wanted to. There are no additional drivers and no settings to adjust, so unless you have a very fancy gaming headset with inline mic level controls, you can't change it. But if you do find it's too loud, or too quiet in comparison to the game audio, you should plug the microphone into your PC instead to adjust there.

Thankfully, the microphone seemed acceptable in our testing–check out the recorded sample in the full review video.

In terms of audio quality, this will of course depend on the microphone you have plugged in. We used the EPOS | Sennheiser GSP601 gaming headset.

Be The Next Famous Switch Streamer with The Llano MicroDock

The Llano MicroDock is not a revolutionary device that contains never before seen electronics. It's a simple combination of existing technology in a neat package that does what it claims to do, and does it well.

For anyone looking to replace their original dock with a more portable solution, as well as record or stream gameplay, in one compact and convenient package: I can highly recommend the MicroDock. In my experience the connection was reliable, the recorded footage was at full quality, and it all just worked as intended without the need for complex drivers and configuration. The ability to plug your gaming headset directly into the adaptor is an added bonus that eliminates any awkward lag in your recordings.

The only downside to the Llano MicroDock is that it's very niche. It literally only works with the Switch (and curiously a few Samsung smartphones that can do DeX). Not the Switch Lite, not the Xbox, nor any other HDMI device. If you're an avid streamer, you might want a more future-proofed device or something that will work with the rest of your consoles. The MicroDock isn't for you. You'll need to invest in a more generic HDMI capture device, which alone will set you back upwards of $150, and can then be used in conjunction with your original Switch dock.

The MicroDock isn't worth it if you don't care about streaming or recording their gameplay at all, and just want a smaller dock adaptor to replace the plastic brick that Nintendo provides. You'll find cheaper devices in much the same form-factor as the MicroDock, for around half the cost, that don't have the ability to capture your gameplay.

Scaling ProxySQL rapidly in Kubernetes

Editor’s Note: Because our bloggers have lots of useful tips, every now and then we update and bring forward a popular post from the past. Today’s post was originally published on November 26, 2019. It’s not uncommon these days for us to use a high availability stack for MySQL consisting of Orchestrator, Consul and ProxySQL. You can read more details about this stack by reading Matthias Crauwels’ blog post How to Autoscale ProxySQL in the Cloud as well as Ivan Groenwold’s post on MySQL High Availability With ProxySQL, Consul and Orchestrator. The high-level concept is simply that Orchestrator will monitor the state of the MySQL replication topology and report changes to Consul which in turn can update ProxySQL hosts using a tool called consul-template. Until now we’ve typically implemented the ProxySQL portion of this stack using an autoscaling group of sorts due to the high levels of CPU usage that can be associated with ProxySQL. It’s better to be able to scale up and down as traffic increases and decreases. This ensures you’re not paying for resources you don’t need. This, however, comes with a few disadvantages. The first is the amount of time it takes to scale up. If you’re using an autoscaling group and it launches a new instance it will need to take the following steps: There will be a request to your cloud service provider for a new VM instance. Once the instance is up and running as part of the group, it will need to install ProxySQL along with supporting packages such as consul (agent) and consul-template. Once the packages are installed, they’ll need to be configured to work with the consul server nodes as well as the ProxySQL nodes that are participating in the ProxySQL cluster. The new ProxySQL host will announce to Consul that it’s available, which in turn will update all the other participating nodes in the ProxySQL cluster. This can take time. Provisioning a new VM instance usually happens fairly quickly — normally within a couple of minutes — but sometimes there can be unexpected delays. You can speed up package installation by using a custom machine image, but since there’s an operational overhead with keeping images up to date with the latest versions of the installed packages, it may be easier to do this using a script that always installs the latest versions. All in all, you can expect a scale-up to take more than a minute. The next issue is how deterministic this solution is. If you’re not using a custom machine image, you’ll need to pull down your config and template files from somewhere — most likely a storage bucket — and there’s a chance those files could be overwritten. This means the next time the autoscaler launches an instance it may not necessarily have the same configuration as the rest of the hosts participating in the ProxySQL cluster. We can take this already impressive stack and go a step further using Docker containers and Kubernetes. For those unfamiliar with containerization; a container is similar to a virtual machine snapshot but isn’t a full snapshot that would include the OS. Instead, it contains just the binary that’s required to run your process. You create this image using a Dockerfile; typically starting from a specified Linux distribution, then using verbs like RUN, COPY and USER to specify what should be included in your container “image.” Once this image is constructed, it can be centrally located in a repository and made available for usage by machines using a containerization platform like Docker. This method of deployment has become more and more popular in recent years due to the fact that containers are lightweight, and you know that if the container works on one system it will work exactly the same way when it’s moved to a different system. This reduces common issues like dependencies and configuration variations from host to host. Given that we want to be able to scale up and down, it’s safe to say we’re going to want to run more than one container. That’s where Kubernetes comes into play. Kubernetes is a container management platform that operates on an array of hosts (virtual or physical) and distributes containers on them as specified by your configuration; typically a YAML-format Kubernetes deployment file. If you’re using Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), this is even easier as the vast majority of the work in creating a Kubernetes deployment (referred to as a ‘workload’ in GKE) YAML is handled for you via a simple UI within the GCP Console. If you want to learn more about Docker or Kubernetes, I highly recommend Nigel Poulton’s video content on Pluralsight. For now, let’s stick to learning about ProxySQL on this platform. If we want ProxySQL to run in Kubernetes and operate with our existing stack with Consul and Orchestrator, we’re going to need to keep best practices in mind for our containers. Each container should run only a single process. We know we’re working with ProxySQL, consul (agent), and consul-template, so these will all need to be in their own containers. The primary process running in each container should run as PID 1. The primary process running in each container should not run as root. Log output from the primary process in the container should be sent to STDOUT so that it can be collected by Docker logs. Containers should be as deterministic as possible — meaning they should run the same (or at least as much as possible) regardless of what environment they are deployed in. The first thing in the list above that popped out is the need to have ProxySQL, consul-template and consul (agent) isolated within their own containers. These are going to need to work together given that consul (agent) is acting as our communication conduit back to consul (server) hosts and consul-template is what updates ProxySQL based on changes to keys and values in Consul. So how can they work together if they’re in separate containers? Kubernetes provides the solution. When you’re thinking about Docker, the smallest computational unit is the container; however, when you’re thinking about Kubernetes, the smallest computational unit is the pod which can contain one or more containers. Any containers operating within the same pod can communicate with one another using localhost ports. So in this case, assuming you’re using default ports, the consul-template container can communicate to the consul (agent) container using localhost port 8500, and it can communicate to the ProxySQL container using port 6032 given that these three containers will be working together in the same pod. So let’s start looking at some code, starting with the simplest container and working our way to the most complex. Consul (Agent) Container Below is a generic version of the Dockerfile I’m using for consul (agent). The objective is to install Consul then instruct it to connect as an agent to the Consul cluster comprised of the consul (server) nodes. This is a personal preference of mine. There are probably more lightweight distributions that can be considered, such as Alpine as recommended by Google, but I’m not the best OS nerd out there so I wanted to stick with what I know. Install our dependencies, which in this case are unzip and wget. Create our consul user, group and directory structure. Install consul. Copy over the consul config file from the host where the Docker build is being performed. Switch to the consul user. Start consul (agent). Now let’s check the code and see if it matches best practices. Container runs a single process: The ENTRYPOINT runs Consul directly, meaning nothing else is being run. Keep in mind that ENTRYPOINT specifies what should be run when the container starts. This means when the container starts it won’t have to install anything because the packages come with the image as designated by the Dockerfile, but we still need to launch Consul when the container starts. Process should be PID 1: Any process run by ENTRYPOINT will run as PID 1. Process should not be run as root: We switched to the Consul user prior to starting the ENTRYPOINT. Log output should go to STDOUT: If you run Consul using the command noted in the ENTRYPOINT, you’ll see log output goes to STDOUT. Should be as deterministic as possible: We’ve copied the configuration file into the container, meaning the container doesn’t have to get support files from anywhere else before Consul starts. The only way the nature of Consul will change is if we recreate the container image with a new configuration file. There’s really nothing special about the Consul configuration file that gets copied into the container. You can see an example of this by checking the aforementioned blog posts by Matthias or Ivan for this particular HA stack. ProxySQL Container Below is a generic version of the Dockerfile I’m using for ProxySQL. The objective is to install ProxySQL and make it available to receive traffic requests on 6033 for write traffic, 6034 for read traffic and 6032 for the admin console which is how consul-template will interface with ProxySQL. Create our ProxySQL user and group. Install ProxySQL and dependencies, which in this case is curl, which will be used to poll the GCP API in order to determine what region the ProxySQL cluster is in. We’ll cover this in more detail below. Move our configuration files and ENTRYPOINT script to the container. Make sure the ProxySQL config file is readable by ProxySQL.  Switch to the ProxySQL user. Start ProxySQL via the ENTRYPOINT script provided with the container. In my use case, I have multiple ProxySQL clusters — one per GCP region. They have to be logically grouped together to ensure they route read traffic to replicas within the local region but send traffic to the master regardless of what region it’s in. In my solution, a hostgroup is noted for read replicas in each region, so my mysql_query_rules table needs to be configured accordingly. In my solution, the MySQL hosts will be added to different host groups, but the routing to each hostgroup will remain consistent. Given that it’s highly unlikely to change, I have mysql_query_rules configured in the configuration file. This means I need to select the correct configuration file based on my region before starting ProxySQL, and this is where my ENTRYPOINT script comes into play. Based on the result, it will copy the correct config file to the appropriate location, then start ProxySQL. Let’s see how the combination of the Dockerfile and the ENTRYPOINT script allows us to meet best practices. Container runs a single process: ENTRYPOINT calls the entrypoint.sh script, which does some conditional logic based on the regional location of the container, then ends by running ProxySQL. This means at the end of the process ProxySQL will be the only process running. Process should be PID 1: The command “exec” at the end of the ENTRYPOINT script will start ProxySQL as PID 1. Process should not be run as root: We switched to the ProxySQL user prior to starting the ENTRYPOINT. Log output should go to STDOUT: If you run ProxySQL using the command noted at the end of the ENTRYPOINT script you’ll see that log output goes to STDOUT. Should be as deterministic as possible: We’ve copied the potential configuration files into the container. Unlike Consul, there are multiple configuration files and we need to determine which will be used based on the region the container lives in, but the configuration files themselves will not change unless the container image itself is updated. This ensures that all containers running within the same region will behave the same. Consul-template container Below is a generic version of the Dockerfile I’m using for consul-template. The objective is to install consul-template and have it act as the bridge between Consul via the consul (agent) container and ProxySQL; updating ProxySQL as needed when keys and values change in Consul. Start consul-template via the ENTRYPOINT script that’s provided with the container. Much like our ProxySQL container, we really need to look at the ENTRYPOINT here in order to get the whole story. However, there is some additional logic here that checks to ensure that ProxySQL is up and listening on 6032 and that consul (agent) is up and listening on port 8500. The reason for this is the consul-template needs to be able to communicate with both these hosts. You really have no assurance as to what container is going to load in what order in a pod, so to avoid excessive errors in the consul-template log, I have it wait until it knows that its dependent services are running. Let’s go through our best practices checklist one more time against our consul-template container code. This means at the end of the process consul-template will be the only process running. Log output should go to STDOUT: If you run Consul using the command noted at the end of the ENTRYPOINT script, you’ll see log output goes to STDOUT. Should be as deterministic as possible: Just like ProxySQL and consul (agent), all the supporting files are packaged with the container. Yes, there is logic to determine what files should be used, but you have the assurance that the files won’t change unless you create a new version of the container image. Putting it all together Okay, we have three containers representing the three processes we need to package together so ProxySQL can work as part of our HA stack. Now we need to put it all together in a pod so Kubernetes can have it run against our resources. In my use case, I’m running this on GCP, meaning once my containers have been built they’re going to need to be pushed up to the Google Container Registry. After this we can create our workload to run our pod and specify how many pods we want to run. Getting this up and running can be done with just a few short and simple steps: Create a Kubernetes cluster if you don’t already have one. This is what provisions the Cloud Compute VMs the pods will run on. Push your three Docker images to the Google container registry. This makes the images available for use by the Kubernetes engine. Create your Kubernetes workload, which can be done simply via the user interface in the GCP console. All that’s required is selecting the latest version of the three containers you’ve pushed up to the registry, optionally applying some metadata like an application name, Kubernetes namespace, and labels, then selecting which cluster you want to run the workload on. Once you click deploy, the containers will spin up and, assuming there are no issues bringing the containers online, you’ll quickly have a functioning ProxySQL pod in Kubernetes that follows these high-level steps: The pod is started. The three containers will start. In Kubernetes, pods are fully atomic. All the containers start without error or the pod will not consider itself started. The consul-template container will poll consul (agent) and ProxySQL on their respective ports until it’s confirmed those processes have started, then consul-template will start. Consul-template will create the new SQL files meant to configure ProxySQL based on the contents of the Consul key / value store. Consul-template will run the newly created SQL files against ProxySQL via its admin interface. The pod is now ready to receive traffic. The YAML During the process of creating your workload, or even after the fact, you’ll be able to see the YAML you’d normally have to create with standard Kubernetes deployments. This is a huge part of easing the process which allows us to get our solution working so quickly. However, despite the fact that we have a lot of YAML created for us, there are still some occasions where we may need to modify this manually, such as working with Kubernetes Container Lifecycle Hooks, or working with requests or limits for hardware resources for individual containers in our pod. How do I access my ProxySQL instance? One consideration for Kubernetes is when pods are started and stopped they’ll get an ephemeral IP address, so you don’t want to have your applications connect to your pods directly. Kubernetes has a feature called a “service” that allows your pods to be exposed via a consistent network interface. This service can also handle load balancing, which is what I’m planning on using with my Kubernetes deployment. Adding a service to your GKE workload is very simple and can be added with a few clicks. Autoscaling As noted earlier in this post, before the implementation of Kubernetes for this solution, it was recommended to use cloud compute autoscaling groups to handle fluctuations in traffic. We want to include the same strategy with Kubernetes to ensure we have enough pods available to handle traffic demand. Including autoscaling in your workload is also fairly simple and can be done via the console UI. One important thing to note about scaling with Kubernetes is the time it takes to scale up and down. In the intro section of this post, I noted the process of adding and removing nodes from an autoscaling group and how that can take minutes to achieve depending on how quickly your cloud provider can stand up a new instance and the complexity of your configuration. With Kubernetes, I’ve seen my pods scale up in as little as three seconds and scale down in less than one second. This is part of what makes this solution so powerful. Considerations for Connections During Scale-Up and Down One important thing to note is, as the workload gains and loses pods, your connections to ProxySQL via the exposed service can be interrupted. The autoscaling documentation notes that this can cause disruption and your application needs to be able to handle this in much the same way it would have to for a cloud compute autoscaling group. You’ll want to ensure that your application has retry on database failure logic built in before incorporating Kubernetes autoscaling (or any autoscaling for that matter) as part of your data platform. Considerations for MySQL users in ProxySQL Three tables are replicated when working with ProxySQL cluster: mysql_servers, mysql_query_rules and mysql_users — meaning when a change to any of these tables is made on one of the nodes in the cluster, it will be replicated to all the other nodes.  We really don’t need to worry about this when working with mysql_servers given that all nodes will get their mysql_server information from Consul via consul-template, so I’ve disabled this clustering feature. With my particular use case I don’t need to worry about mysql_query_rules either because, as noted earlier in this post, my traffic is being routed based on the port that traffic is being sent to. The rules for this are simple, and should not change, so I have it in the configuration file and I have disabled replicating this table, as well. The last table to consider is mysql_users and this is where things get interesting. Remember with Kubernetes it’s possible to have persistent storage, but we really want our containers to be as stateless as possible, so if we were to follow the Docker and Kubernetes philosophy as closely as possible we wouldn’t want to have our data persist. This falls into the whole cattle vs pets discussion when working with containers, but I digress. Let’s assume we’ve opted NOT to persist our ProxySQL data, typically stored in SQLite, and we lose all the pods in our Kubernetes cluster. It’s unlikely, but we always need to be ready for disaster. When the first pod comes up, it’s starting with a blank slate and this isn’t a problem considering it will get its initial set of mysql_server data from Consul via consul-template and its mysql_query_rules data from the config file. However, there is no source of truth for mysql_users data, so all that data would be lost. In this case, we need to incorporate some source of truth for the ProxySQL mysql_users table. It’s possible to use a cloud compute VM with ProxySQL installed to be an ever-present member of the cluster which could seed data for new joining pods. However, that breaks our construct of working specifically with containers. Plus, if you have a multi-cluster configuration like I do, where there’s one cluster in each region, you need one ProxySQL “master host” in each region. This is a bit of a waste considering it’s just acting as a source of truth for mysql_users, which likely will be the same across all clusters. My solution, in this case, is to leverage the source of truth we already have in place: Consul. If it’s already acting as a source of truth for mysql_servers, there’s no reason it can’t act as a source of truth for this as well. All I need is to have my MySQL users and password hashes (always stay secure) in Consul. I can then use consul-template to create these on new ProxySQL host, or change them as keys and values change. You may have noticed this in the ENTRYPOINT script in my consul-template container. To Cluster or Not To Cluster? I mentioned before that ProxySQL cluster handles the replication of three tables: mysql_users, mysql_query_rules and mysql_servers. Considering all three of these tables now have their own source of truth, we really don’t need to worry about replicating this data. As Consul receives change reports, it will update all the ProxySQL pods considering that all of them have consul (agent) and consul-template containers as part of the pod. With this in mind, I’ve opted to rely on my constructed sources of truth and reduce solution complexity by removing ProxySQL clustering; however, this is going to vary from use case to use case. Conclusion The solution implemented in this use case has required the inclusion of a lot of new technologies that MySQL DBAs may or may not have familiarity with: ProxySQL, Orchestrator, Consul, GTIDs, etc. We’ve made this solution a little more complex by adding Docker and Kubernetes to the stack, but I personally believe this complexity is worth it considering the higher degree of idempotency that is built into the solution, the lack of need for ProxySQL clustering and the speed in which scale-up and scale-down occurs. One last consideration is the simple need for learning how to incorporate containers into your stack. This is not my first blog post on container philosophy and implementation. I believe containers are going to become a greater part of the landscape for all of us — even us, the database professionals with our highly stateful technological challenges.
