I hate how diet culture demonized pasta, and carbs in general.
I don’t know how we came to the fact that pasta were the enemy of weight loss. Sure it’s carbs, THE big demon of the diet culture, but for years I thought a reasonable share of pasta alone was horrible for weight loss, even if I couldn’t see why. There’s nothing except flour in regular pasta, and if you can buy the good brands, it’s nutritious, with an interesting amount of protein (it’s not a main source of proteins, obviously). You can add a bit of salt and “plain” tomato sauce cooked with onions browned in a teaspoon of olive oil. And you have a very simple but delicious and healthy meal that is, YES, low calorie. You can even pimp it with any vegetable you want and it’s still low calorie.
Of course, you have to accept that low calorie is not flavored water and vegetable juice. At worst, for a regular adult, we need around 1500 to 1600 cal a day. Some people eat that in a single meal so of course, this is when it can become problematic if you want to lose weight (if you don’t, enjoy your meal, really) And of course, we’re talking about good calories, things that will actually feed your body and brain. If you have lunch at noon and won’t eat again before 7 pm, EAT THE PASTA! EAT THE CARBS! It’ll keep you going for the afternoon!
I spend more than 25 years trapped in the diet culture, went very far to lose weight. It damaged my body beyond reason. Today, I can’t lose weight anymore, it’s a very, very hard process because my body can’t do that shit anymore. I don’t count calories anymore but I know what I eat, for having counted, weighed and deconstructed every single thing I ate for many, many years. It’s madness. The only thing those years taught me was cooking, and it came at the end of the madness, when diet culture from the 80s and 90s started to fade and diet/food specialists also stopped spilling bullshit everywhere. Before that, ANY kind of sauce was the demon. Diet recipes where based on boiling and steaming. That’s all. Tasteless. Spices? Lol what spices? You want taste? You want to enjoy a meal while losing weight? Not happening. You eat BLAND. Even tomato sauce without anything else than tomato wasn’t happening. Diet culture wanted young girls and women to suffer for not healthy reason. This is not health. And I don’t even talk about mental health. The damages are insane.
So today I ate just pasta with cooked tomato sauce. Homemade, so I don’t have all the shit store brought stuff have in them. And it was delicious and I don’t feel any guilt at all. Because now I know what I eat, I know I can eat pasta and be healthy and feel full and eat pasta again tomorrow if I want.
Eat. Food is life, it’s health. And It’s good. You just have to learn to eat smart, not less. Just better! Everything in life is about balance, and food is the same. Find the right balance for you, the one that doesn’t make you pitiful, sad, tired. The one that makes you enjoy food just the way you need it.
