Alan Allport’s Britain at Bay (Knopf, 2020) is great on all the ways the United Kingdom was an only imperfectly free country at the beginning of the Second World War.
On the Civil Authorities (Special Powers) Act:
Police power in Northern Ireland was very different in character from elsewhere in the UK, owing to the Civil Authorities (Special Powers) Act, or SPA. The SPA was originally passed in the emergency conditions of 1922 at the end of the Irish War of Independence. Its powers had only been supposed to last one year, but it was found to be so useful that it was annually renewed by Stormont up to 1933, and made permanent thereafter.
Using the authority granted to it by the SPA, Northern Ireland’s government could impose curfews, prohibit public gatherings and protest marches, ban newspapers, arrest members of the public wearing uniforms or bearing items associated with proscribed organisations, search for and seize contraband goods, indefinitely detain those suspected of ‘subversive activity’ or exclude them from entering Northern Ireland, punish anyone making a report ‘intended or likely to cause disaffection to His Majesty’ and, in broad terms, ‘take all such steps and issue all such orders as may be necessary for preserving the peace and maintaining order’. In December 1938 the SPA was used to introduce internment without trial for suspected IRA men. Some of these detainees were taken to a prison hulk called the Al Rawdah, moored off Killyleagh, into which they were packed in bronchitic squalor for five months. The SPA granted Craigavon’s executive virtually unlimited domestic powers of control and surveillance, which were directed specifically at an ethno-religious minority regarded as a parasitical and disloyal enemy within. The SPA formed, in the words of a National Council for Civil Liberties (NCCL) report in 1936, ‘the basis for a legal dictatorship’. W. J. Stewart, a progressive Unionist critical of the UUP, described Northern Ireland’s government in the 1930s as ‘more completely in control of the six counties than either Hitler or Mussolini in their own countries’.
[...]
The police responded to the [IRA’s 1939] bombing campaign in different ways, some constabularies taking great pains to distinguish IRA terrorists from the Irish community at large, some less so. Newspaper stories from the Spanish Civil War had been full of reports about seditious ‘Fifth Columnists’, and the possibility that Irish migrants might be providing sanctuaries for IRA men did not seem completely fantastical. In London the Metropolitan Police asked hotel and boarding-house staff to provide details about any new visitors with Irish addresses or accents. The public was encouraged to report sightings of Irishmen ‘idling’ during daylight hours on the streets of the capital. S-Plan attacks provoked panicky and legally dubious police work. After the Piccadilly bombing constables ‘dashed through the crowd haphazardly’, as one witness later put it, rounding up dozens of men with Irish brogues. The whole operation was conducted with such a lack of basic procedure that all of the detained men had to be released later in the day for want of evidence – including a couple of suspects who, it turned out later, really had been involved in planting the bomb.
On the Prevention of Violence (Temporary Provisions) Act:
Earlier in 1939, the S-Plan terrorist campaign had provoked a similar kind of test, on a smaller scale, of how far the British were willing to compromise their traditional civil liberties in the name of public safety. In July 1939 the home secretary had introduced the Prevention of Violence (Temporary Provisions) Act to the Commons, a remarkable piece of legislation rushed through Parliament at breakneck speed, largely forgotten in the subsequent hubbub of war but something that ought to be better remembered than it is. The Prevention of Violence Act granted the home secretary the authority to prohibit anyone who had been resident in Great Britain for less than twenty years from entering or re-entering the country if it was believed that they were ‘concerned in the preparation or instigation […] of acts of violence designed to influence public opinion or Government policy with respect to Irish affairs’. He could expel such persons from the United Kingdom and detain them for up to five days prior to that expulsion. The Act allowed, for the first time in history, a political appointee to imprison, deport and exile British subjects without reference to the courts. It also empowered the police, under certain circumstances, to conduct searches and seizures of suspects’ property without obtaining a judicial warrant first. British subjects – as all Irishmen and -women still legally were in 1939, even those living in the Free State – had never been subject to such peacetime restrictions before.
Hoare insisted to Parliament that the new Act was a ‘temporary measure to meet a passing emergency’ which would remain on the statute books for no longer than two years. Some MPs were not convinced. They saw it as an attack on Britain’s culture of democracy. ‘We are proud that this is a free country,’ argued William Wedgwood Benn (father of Tony and grandfather of Hilary). ‘Our people hold their heads a little higher because they believe they enjoy a measure of freedom […] I do not think public opinion will be assisted by giving the Home Secretary power to turn us all into ticket-of-leave men, if he so wishes.’ In return, supporters of the Act regarded these objections as a sop to terrorists. ‘What about King’s Cross?’ demanded Sir Joseph Nall, Tory MP for Manchester Hulme. ‘What about the people who are being maimed and killed?’ It was much better, he argued, ‘to deport a dozen innocent persons than to allow one innocent person to be killed’. The Prevention of Violence Act passed into law.
Even before the Second World War broke out, then, fears of terrorism had already caused the government drastically to revise traditional assumptions about the freedoms of the individual British citizen. The Prevention of Violence Act was a first step in the creeping Hibernicisation of British law during the twentieth century, a process in which restrictions on civil liberty originally applied in ‘troubled’ Ireland were progressively transferred to the rest of the United Kingdom as well. In time, an indefinite state of emergency would become the new normal.
On the Emergency Powers (Defence) Act and Treachery Act:
All of this [invasion scare] seemed to suggest that the democracy itself could not be trusted in a crisis. Only by abandoning the ‘present rather easy-going methods’ of national life and adopting a set of restrictions ‘which would approach the totalitarian’ could Britain survive a Nazi onslaught, the Cabinet was warned by Chamberlain on 18 May. The legal apparatus for such a siege dictatorship was established four days later, when a new Emergency Powers (Defence) Act was passed by the Commons in its entirety in just two hours. This was an extension of the existing emergency legislation passed at the outbreak of war which now gave the government almost unlimited authority to regulate people, property and capital without the need for parliamentary scrutiny. As the new minister for labour later observed, it made him ‘a kind of Führer with powers to order anybody anywhere’. A Treachery Act passed the same day made it a capital offence to assist the enemy’s military operations or to hamper Britain’s own.
As the Times put it, the Emergency Powers Act ‘comes near to suspending the very essence of the Constitution as it has been built up in a thousand years. Our ancient liberties are placed in pawn for victory.’ A slew of regulations soon circumscribed even the most quotidian features of the British citizen’s life. It was unlawful to ‘endeavour to influence […] public opinion in a manner likely to be prejudicial’ to the war effort, to take part in a strike, to withhold information about an invention or patent if the state demanded it, to hold an unauthorised procession, to put out flags, to operate a car radio or to put icing on a cake (wickedly wasteful of sugar). Chamberlain hoped that public opinion would back these restrictions; but if not, recalcitrant non-cooperators could be drafted into a compulsory labour corps under prison discipline.
The creation in mid-May 1940 of the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV), later renamed the Home Guard, ought to be seen in this context of government nervousness. Private citizens had responded to news of the German parachute landings in the Netherlands and Belgium by announcing the formation of ad hoc militia companies to defend their homeland. Whitehall felt it had to act quickly to control the process. One quarter of a million men aged between seventeen and sixty-five registered to join the new auxiliary force within the first week of its announcement, and by July 1940 its nominal strength stood at 1.5 million.
On Regulations 39BA and 18B:
Sir John Simon’s 1938 prophecy that rearmament and war would turn Britain into ‘a different kind of nation’ seemed to have come true. Moreover, it had happened with a remarkable lack of discussion or opposition. ‘A united nation feels no hesitation or misgiving’ about the abandonment of its personal freedoms, insisted the Times when the Emergency Powers Act was rushed through Parliament: ‘the temporary surrender [of liberties] is made with a glad heart and a confident spirit.’ That was not altogether true. There would be resistance to some of the more controversial powers the government had acquired for itself. That said, the assault on other values, particularly the presumption of innocence in law and the protection of minorities, inspired rather less sympathy.
The very British right to grumble out loud produced an early skirmish in this conflict over liberties. Regulation 39BA, introduced in June 1940, made it a criminal offence, punishable by up to a month in prison, to circulate ‘any report or statement relating to matters connected with the war which is likely to cause alarm and despondency’. It was announced at the same moment the Ministry of Information launched a ‘Silent Column’ campaign that condemned spreading rumours and gossiping about the war effort. The government was not shy about using its new power. By late July there had been over seventy prosecutions. A tradesman in Yeovil was jailed for thirty days for saying ‘Hitler will be here in a month’. A Bristol septuagenarian earned himself a week in prison for claiming that the Swastika would soon fly over Parliament.
As the summer wore on, however, a press backlash caused the government to retreat. Churchill admitted to the Commons on 23 July that, however ‘well-meant’ it had been, Regulation 39BA had had the unfortunate effect of criminalising ‘silly vapourings which are best dealt with on the spur of the moment by verbal responses’. The Silent Column was put into what he called ‘innocuous desuetude’, and the Home Secretary was asked to review all ‘alarm and despondency’ convictions. To what extent the Order’s continued existence had a chilling effect on free expression is unknowable. (‘Best to pass no opinion these days,’ as one Briton was reported saying by Home Intelligence. ‘You might get hung.’) Could anyone be certain that that innocuous pollster or Mass Observer asking them questions about the war was not a government provocateur?
A more ominous issue came up in August, when the government sought to create special regulations to deal with a crisis in which heavy bombing or invasion had halted normal legal procedures in some parts of the country. It proposed the creation of regional ‘War Zone courts’, presided over by experienced judges and appointed by the lord chancellor. Although these would not be military tribunals or courts-martial, they would nonetheless have the power to impose death sentences without appeal. ‘If we are not shot by the Germans we are evidently going to be shot by our own people,’ one Briton commented on hearing the news. The proposal was attacked in the Commons as far too vague, considering its life-and-death stakes. The Home Secretary’s reassurance that such courts would only operate with the greatest restraint was condemned as feeble by the barrister and Liberal MP Frank Kingsley Griffith: ‘it is all very well for anybody to come before this House and say, “I have a Bill which entitles me to cut off your head, but I can assure you that I am only going to cut your toe nails.” ’ In the end, the government retreated and promised that all War Court sentences would be subject to appeal. They were, in the end, never used anyway.
The Home Office received enough popular pushback against both Regulation 39BA and the War Zone courts for it to moderate its plans on the grounds of civil liberty. There was much less public concern provoked by the mass incarceration without trial of British citizens, which began on the morning of 23 May with the arrest of Sir Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists (BUF). Under Defence Regulation 18B, the Home Secretary could detain indefinitely anyone of ‘hostile origin or associations’ or who had recently committed ‘acts prejudicial to the public safety’. Anyone so interned had a right of appeal to an advisory committee, but they were not allowed to know who had recommended their arrest, or why.
Regulation 18B had existed since the outbreak of war but was only now applied with any seriousness. By July 1940 over 700 BUF members and fellow-travellers of the far right had been swept up, most to Brixton Prison (only a single Communist Party member, a Yorkshire shop steward accused of sabotaging workplace production, joined them).
Not great!

Pilot : A New Journey
Just a normal day at the academy, students were enjoying their recess to the fullest, embracing a loud and joyous atmosphere inside the voluminous dining hall. The Royal Academy of Magic and Science, also known as RAMS, is the one and only educational institute established in Oneiric Kingdom, where all the talented young prodigy of respective tribes were gathered under one roof to be equipped with all the essential knowledge and skill to later become the future leaders and warriors of the kingdom.
"Bong!"
The distinct sound of the old bell echoed across every corner of the iconic academic buildings, marking the end of the one-hour recess period given to the students. Gradually, the hall began to lose its noisy ambience as students had already finished their meal and slowly making their way out of the dining hall to continue the second half of their lesson schedule.
However, positioned at the very front row of the dining hall, a group of six female students still hadn’t move an inch from their position, not showing any sign of a rush in doing so as they kept goofing around with each other while munching on their meals.
Sakura : Oi Yena-ssi, can you speed up and finish your meal? It's time already!
Yena : Haha chill out, unnie. What's the rush for? It's not like the teachers gonna be on time anyway.
Sakura : Huh~ I know, but I got Combat class after this. You know what Sir Junho will do to the last person that enter his class, right?
The pure agitation on Sakura’s face sent Yena stifling into laughter.
Yena : Ahh, so that's why you’re freaking out right now. But... if you come to think of it, isn't it a good thing if you get to pair with him for the class? I mean, you get to experience getting your ass kicked by the great Sir Junho, the greatest ex-combatants of IZ-Land. And of course, learn from him at the same time.
Eunbi : But maybe less learning and more pain instead.
Minju : For real, though. Last time I had to pair with him for Combat class, I returned to dorm that day with bruises all over my back. I couldn't even sleep straight that night because of it.
Yujin : Haha seriously, unnie? I mean... no offense, but it's getting hard to trust your story these days since you always exaggerate. Even if I lightly tap your shoulder right now, you’ll say that I almost kill you, right?
The whole table burst into laughter from Yujin's honest comment, making the milky white face of the ice princess turned as red as the lipstick she wore on her lips.
“Don't you have class after this, Nako? You usually leave for class early since you need the front seat every time,” asked Eunbi jokingly.
“Ahh~ unnie! I told you not to mention about the front seat thing again. I'm much taller now compared to last year," said Nako while pouting her mouth. "And to answer your question, no, my Potions class was cancelled. Professor Yang have a meeting today.
"Ooh ooh, same goes for me. Both my History and Economics class after this were cancelled last minute because the professors are absent. I heard the other students said that they went for a meeting or something," added Yujin.
"Hmm...so, most professors are having the same emergency meeting today. I wonder what do they talk about.” said Eunbi.
The whole table went for a short moment of silent as each of the girls was trying to take a guess on the issue. Even Yena had paused from chewing the baked beans in her mouth just to try and give a thought about the topic. At the moment, only one of them seemed to not be giving a single hoot about the discussion while shaking her leg anxiously.
"Urgh~ screw it! I don’t want to have a broken neck by the end of today’s class, so I'm leaving," erupted Sakura, aggressively picking up her stuff from the table before rushing off towards the exit.
Suddenly, something bizarre happened. All the chairs and tables inside the dining hall somehow began to move by itself. Sakura who was only a feet away from the exit paused her steps in bewilderment as she realized that the entire ground was shaking.
"Y-Yah, what the hell is happening!?" questioned Yena in shock.
All the leftover of their meal spilled to the floor due to the strong-mild earthquake. The intense rumbling of ground also made the girls starting to lose their balance a bit.
"Guys, we need to get out of here! I think the building is going to collapse soon," yelled Eunbi.
The girls nodded to Eunbi's command. They grabbed onto each others' hand and ran towards the exit across the room. Sakura meanwhile still hadn’t move from where her standing, holding tightly to the door handle while waiting for her friends’ arrival to made their escape together.
"Guys, faster!" shouted Sakura from afar, holding tightly to the door handle.
As the ground kept shaking on high rate, the ceiling started to crack with debris pouring on them. Yujin who was on the run while nimbly avoiding the broken tiles, noticed a large pile of concrete about to come off from the ceiling, located precisely above Sakura's head.
"Kkura-unnie, move away from there!" shouted Yujin.
Unfortunately, Sakura couldn't heard her due to the deafening noise of the crumbling wall.
At this point, Yujin couldn't seem to ignore the warning. The concrete piece was only held by a single steel cable before it would completely fell on top of Sakura’s head .
Going by her full instinct, Yujin let go of Nako's hand and dashed forward with an amazing pace. Despite having stumbled a few times by the broken tiles, she was able to avoid as many concrete ceiling that were raining on them like a rocky snow.
However, just a few steps before she could finally reached Sakura, the steel cable holding the concrete had completely detached, causing it to free-fall to the ground by the natural law of gravity.
Running out of time and option, Yujin instantly channeled all her inner energy to channel her special ability. With her gifted ability, she launched herself 10 feet above the ground while effortlessly covering a 15 meter distance with full momentum to smash the concrete into pieces with her bare fist before she crash-landed onto the ground.
"Oh God, Yujin-ah! A-Are you okay? Let me help you up."
Sakura quickly helped Yujin to get back on her feet before they both making their way out of the dining room. After Eunbi, Yena, Nako and Minju also succeeded in making their escape from the dining hall, the girls worked their feet towards the dormitory as instructed by the announcement from the headmaster earlier.
******
As they were running across the bridge connecting the academic building and the dormitory, a loud thud intensified across the island, putting the girls on shock therefore pausing their steps after hearing it. What they saw next as they turned their head around was unbelievable with their eyes. Chills crawled over their spines and a jolt was sent across their body by the frightening scenery that lied upon them. A huge army of dark mages were raining the entire the kingdom with dark magic, creating almost like a spontaneous firework show as the attack collided with the transparent magical barrier that served as a first-line protector of the floating island.
"Shit...that doesn't look good," said Yena, stating the obvious.
"Oh no, we're so doomed now," added Minju, being a bit more paranoid as usuals.
"The dark magic is really strong that the impact when it collides with the barrier causes an earthquake to the whole island," explained Nako, looking terrified and amazed at the same time.
"How much longer can the barrier stands at this rate?" asked Yujin, mouth was half opened while observing the scale of mess they about to face.
Just as Yujin was saying, the barrier started to break little by little. The army of dark mages swamped into the loophole of the broken part of the barrier and later on, in the count of a few seconds on hand, the protective shield had completely teared down, leaving the kingdom with full vulnerability of an attack by the enemy. The dark mages led by their king, Lord Drakka, launched a full force attack toward the kingdom, creating explosions and chaos on every part of the island where local villagers and citizens were scattered all over the place to seek their safety.
With a huge advantage on the enemy’s hand by the surprise attack, a group of tyranny dark mages charged toward the academy and raided the school compound, creating a complete panic situation among the students. The professors along with the entirety of the academy's workforce were all doing the best in their capabilities to provide defense and ensuring the students' safety.
Meanwhile, the six girls remained still on the bridge, truly in awe and at the same time clueless of the steps they should be taking from there.
"Shit, they're coming at us," said Eunbi, stating the obvious.
"Unnie, what do we do now? There's no use for us to hide at the dorm anymore at this rate," asked Yujin.
"Hmm...I say we fight them," replied Eunbi.
"A-Are you serious, unnie? I mean...we're still not ready, we don't have full control of our power yet," said Minju, voice starting to tremble.
"Haha, are you scared, Minju? Don't worry, I'll burn them all for you," said Yena in confidence, lighting up a ball of flame on her right hand.
"Okay, listen. They are coming now and we can't only depend on the teachers to protect us. About what Minju said, I believe we already train long enough and this is the time to apply what we have learnt," briefed Eunbi. "As you guys can see, we are obviously outnumbered by them. So, our plan here is just to defend ourselves and watch each others' back, at least until the helps arrive."
After the short briefing by the oldest, all the girls had no choice but to gather their courage and stood their ground.
"We'll move by pair now. Yena, you'll go with Minju, Sakura with Yujin, and Nako with me. Remember, watch each other backs and don't split too far with your partner, in case anything bad happen, alright?" reminded Eunbi.
All of them nodded as they understood the clear strategy explained by Eunbi.
"Okay, let's go, Minju-yah!" shouted Yena in confidence.
Truth be told, Yena was also nervous like the friends alongside her, but she also felt excited as she got to test her ability in real fights situation. She started off by engulfing her entire body with flames and flew to the airspace before taking down a couple of enemy with the fireballs shot from her bare hands.
"U-Unnie, wait for me!" yelled Minju with her trembling voice.
For some reason, Minju still didn't move her feet from the bridge. Eunbi who also possessed psychic ability, use her power to read Minju's mind.
"Minju-yah, I know you're scared, but we have no choice now. You need to be confident with your power to be able to defense yourself. As far as I know, you are the best archer in the school, and you also get high mark in combat skills, so I think you are more than ready to fight these bastards. You just need to trust yourself. We can do this," said Eunbi softly, trying to lift up the girl’s spirit.
Minju wiped her eyes that was getting teary after being overly terrified a moment ago. Being the princess of Akua, she channeled her power to form a solid ice bow and arrows by simply freezing the air particle around her. With her forte weapon on hand, she then began to join the fight by shooting down enemies from the bridge, covering Yena’s blind spot in the hectic aerial war ground.
"Damn. Nice shot," praised Yena in awe after a dark mage she was battling with getting struck with an arrow right through its head by Minju.
"Focus, unnie!”
Meanwhile, Sakura and Yujin already moved to the school ground to help the teachers. Sir Junho who were busy fighting, suddenly noticed Yujin and Sakura presence.
"Yujin, Sakura! You aren't suppose to be out here now," said Sir Junho.
"We want to help, sir. We're confident that we can help you to defend the school," replied Yujin.
Sakura who was standing beside her silently nodded as she agreed with Yujin's statement.
Sir Junho was reluctant to allow them to fight, but after considering on how outnumbered they were, he agreed to the offer.
"Fine. In that case, here's the plan. Yujin, you'll cover the ground with me. Sakura, you'll take the aerial side," briefed Sir Junho.
"Got it, sir!" Yujin and Sakura answered simultaneously.
Yujin jumped into the fight straightaway and kicked the enemies’ asses with her tremendous superhuman strength, knocking down every dark mages around her.
Sakura on the other hand, was calmly channeling her energy. The sky began to turn dark above them as if a storm about to occur. Her feet was slowly floating above the ground while her eyes turning fully white, electric charge flowed all over her hand. Using her power, she stroke the dark mages with the blades of thunderstorms she casted from the sky.
On the other hand, Eunbi and Nako rushed to the dormitory to help the students that were trapped inside. The dormitory was on fire as the dark mages exploded the roof with their magic. Eunbi removed all the obstacles that blocking their way using her wind power. Some of the students were too scared to move, so Eunbi used her telekinesis ability to get inside their head and helped them escape.
As they proceed to the ground level, they encountered a group of dark mages moving in their direction. The mages started to attack them by throwing their magic shots.
Nako calmly concentrated her elemental power and strike her palms. A huge boulder emerged from the ground, acting as a shield to protect Nako and Eunbi from the strikes. Nako then stumped her feet, sending a strong waves below the ground. All the dark mages were thrown away by the impact of Nako's attack.
However, no matter how many times they tried to kill the dark mages, it just hopeless. The dark mage kept resurrecting from dead and continued to attack them. At one point, the six girls were starting to get exhausted and losing their focus. Suddenly, Yena got hit by the dark magic and fell to the ground.
"Y-Yena-unnie!"
Minju got shocked after witnessing the incident in front of her. She rushed to the ground to check on Yena's condition.
While Minju was losing her focus on Yena, she also got hit from the back by the dark mages. Her head was bleeding as she was thrown hard to the ground, and soon, her vision became blurry bit by bit.
The dark mages approached Yena and Minju who were lying next to each other, intending to end those girls' life. Yena who was still able to see them coming, but unable to move her body as she was in deep pain. She closed her eyes tightly, ready to accept her fate.
"I-I'm sorry, Minju-yah...I've fail to protect us this time."
******
"Princess Yena, Princess Minju! Are you alright?"
A familiar voice surrounded Yena’s ear while she was closing her eyes tightly, realizing that it must be the voice that would gave her the second chance of sontiinue her live. At the perfect moment before the dark mages could finished them, the royal soldiers made a heroic entrance at the scene where they shot down the luring enemy and saved the girls from a quick death.
Yena who was just getting ready to accept her fate a few seonds ago, opened her eyes with a sigh of relief.
"Oh, General Zhao! You came just in time. I thought that would be the end for us just now," said Yena while lying on the ground.
"The kings has give me order to bring back all six princesses to the palace as soon as possible. They have an important message for all of you," said General Zhao.
Yena just nod to whatever the general said. She was just grateful that she was still breathing air at the moment. General Zhao proceed to gather all the six princesses and bring them back to the palace safely.
All the kings of the six tribes were sitting on their thrones at the main hall of the Oneiric Palace, already waiting to welcome the return of their beloved daughters and the heiresses to their thrones.
"Welcome back, our princesses. We are all very deeply worried about your safety just now. Thank God all of you are still alive."
The kings proceeded to hug their daughters first things first, truly grateful for the fact that none of them were harmed from the attack. The girls also very happy to be able to meet their parents again. Suddenly, Yena remembered something.
"Father, what's the important message that you want to tell us?" asked Yena while being in her father’s arm.
"Oh, about that... I will tell you in a moment, my dear. Princesses, please, take your seats now," ordered Emperor Choi, the king of Pyro nation and the father of Yena.
"As it already came to your knowledge, our kingdom are currently under a great attack of the wicked Shadow tribes. They are indeed a very powerful enemy of us for as long as this kingdom was first established, and I believe today they have came to seek revenge on us over the damned history that happened centuries ago. Here also, I must admit, with the great number of armies they have, along with the dangerous flair of dark magic they possess, we might need a bit more luck on our side in order to defeat them, especially with Lord Drakka as their mastermind. Therefore, after considering those factors in this critical situation, we, the united leaders of Oneiric, has come to a decision that we will send you princesses to the Human Realm for a short while."
The surprising announcement sent all the girls flustered in their seat. None of them had ever been to the human world and never thought that they would have to go in any day of their lifetime.
"B-But, Your Highness...if I may ask... why? What do we have to do there?" asked Eunbi, hankering for a more clear explanation of why the drastic decision was made.
"The decision was made to protect all of you from the attack and also as an insurance to persevere our community in the future. Each of you is the only heiress to our thrones. If anything bad may happen to you within the outcome of this war, then that will mark the fall down of our long-built empire, therefore the deceased of our tribes", explained Emperor Choi.
"But we also want to fight, Father. We can use our power and fighting skills we learnt to help defend our kingdom," addressed Yena in passion.
All the other girls also agreed with Yena. They didn't want to run away to another realm and hiding like a coward while their kingdom was being turned into a pit of clash and bloodshed.
"Forgive us, Princess Yena, but we cannot allow your request. All of you are the most valuable assets to our kingdom at this moment. You might be our only hope to continue the legacy of our empire in the next future. We can’t be certain of what the outcome of this war would be, but in case any of us failed to stand, then you're the one who are destined take our place and bring back glory to our kingdom," told Emperor Kwon.
The six princesses remained silent on their seat. The fact that they would be sent far away from home in a few moment and lived apart from their family in a distinct place was a really hard to swallow pills for them , especially knowing that their parents' life were at high stake in the clash.
"My princesses, please, don't be sad. I promise you, we will still be in touch and we have prepare all your necessity in the Human Realm. You just need to stay there for a while until we put this war to end. We promise everything will be fine and things will go back as they used to be.”
All the girls started to get teary eyes. They would be separated from their parents for a long time and went to a place that was very different from their world. They did not know if they would be able to adapt in human world. Despite all of them possessed power and were physically strong, deep down they were still a young woman who need the love and guidance of their parents.
Suddenly, a loud, thundering noise could be heard from outside the palace, followed with a mild earthquake shaking the ground beneath their feet. Apparently, the dark mages were battling the royal guards at the bridge to force their entry into the majestic house. However, it seemed like the guards would not be able to defend it any longer as the amount and strength of the dark mages was too much for them to defend.
"Quick! Follow us." Emperor Choi and the other five tribal leaders guided them to a hidden door that lead to the basement where the inter-dimensional portal was hidden.
The girls had no choice but to follow the order of their parents. As they hurried down the generous amount of stairs, they could finally saw the teleportation portal that will send them to the human world in the form of big hollow ring sitting on top a square platform. All of them hugs their parents for the last time.
"I'll miss you, Father," whispered Yena to Emperor Choi ear as she hugged for the last time. Her voice was trembling as she tried to control her emotions.
"Me too, my princess. Take care. We'll meet again soon, I promise," replied Emperor Choi, while Yena was hugging him tightly.
"And Princess Eunbi, I hope you can become a good leader of your fellow friends there. I believe with the level of maturity you have at your age and also a great value of responsibility, you'll be able to guide your friends and survive there well enough," said Emperor Choi.
Eunbi just nodded her head while trying her best to contain her tears. She knew that she needed to be emotionally and mentally stronger to be able to lead her fellow friends in this new journey. After finished saying their last goodbye, the six princesses stepped onto the designated platform with a heavy heart.
"Best wishes to all of you. We'll be in touch soon."
All six leaders proceed to take their position, circling the platform with the girls standing in the center. They put their hand together while mouthing their sacred tribal chant along with some silent prayers to their late ancestors, gathering a sufficient amount of their elemental energy before before blasting it towards the center of mid-air. As their powers collided, they managed to summon the inter-dimensional gate in the form of a gradually expanding hollow ring, floating on top of the girls’ head with a tremendous scale of energy force field. The earlier stagnant and somber little basement was now illuminated by blinding white lights, together with strong winds whirling across the entire room. As the portal expanded to its limit, signifying it have reached its required amount of energy, a beam of purple light flashed onto the platform where the six girls were standing with their eyes tightly closed and hands locking onto each other’s, teleporting them to a dimension far, far away from their current one within a flash.
After a few seconds, the six girls sensed a new environment around them. It was really calm and quiet, a total far cry from the scene they experienced in the basement a while ago. Only the chirping sound of cicada could be heard, while their nose caught a nature scent of green grasses and wet trunks as soft, cold breeze brushed through their faces. With a mix of nervous and anxious feelings in their chest, the girls slowly re-opened their eyes to uncover the sight of the new world they stepping in, therefore launching off their new journey in what they be thought as the Human Realm.
"So... this is the human world?"

An interview with Breaking Travel News: Gavin Tollman, Chief Executive Officer, Trafalgar
The business was planning to begin an expansion into Africa in the spring of last year when Breaking Travel News talked to Trafalgar's chief executive, Gavin Tollman.
He hoped that new destinations, fresh source markets and new experiences would allow the brand owned by Travel Corporation to continue its global growth.
So as we sat in his palatial office next to Buckingham Palace in central London a year later did the launch satisfy expectations?
Our Africa product was nothing short of amazing in terms of revenue from the United Kingdom; in the first few months we surpassed our complete first year budget.
"Once again this year, sales far outstripped the expected interest-it was enormously encouraging."
For Tollman and the Travel Company, bringing Trafalgar to Africa is something of a personal achievement, with the organization tracing its origins back to the middle of the last century in South Africa.
"Tollman continues: "The most exciting moment for me, personally, came in December last year the family gathered in South Africa for the holiday season.
This meant that I was there when Cape Town left for the first trip and I had the chance to meet the 20 or so guests who were travelling.
What really stood out when I look back, was the excitement and hope of the journey ahead-none of them expected Africa to be so exciting.
On the backdrop of Table Mountain, we gave a welcome reception against an all-glass wall, and as we were there, we had one of those beautiful sunsets, and the mountain spread out the 'tablecloth' and cloud poured over the top.
"One of those special moments, it was."
Tollman is also able to point to changes within the Travel Company in Africa from abroad, with Red Carnation's sister brand currently involved in constructing what he calls the 'ultimate' safari lodge in the Okavango Delta, Botswana.
Opening next year, Xigera Safari Lodge will encourage guests to see large cats, magnificent birds (including native kingfishers), wild scavengers and majestic giants in their natural habitat, while also enjoying the hotel brand's hospitality.
But it has not been smooth sailing, Tollman confides.
I was in the United States only working with hotel team members ahead of the opening in June next year and the project's ambition is great," he continues."
Yet of course, there were delays, as with any project - but ours was unexpected.
There was first a leopard-the property is obviously on the delta, so you have to have a bridge to get to it and a female leopard decided for a day that the bridge was the ultimate place to enjoy the sun.
"There was also a python that took up residence in our architect Anton's room-needless to say he was frightened-and it was hard to persuade him to spend a lot of time in the camp."
His excitement is contagious, however, and in the coming months we can expect to hear a lot more about this project.
Closer to home, and from an outbound viewpoint from the UK, it is eastern Europe that piqued Trafalgar's interest.
If I look at Europe and our expansion here it is in eastern Europe first and foremost.
"We see the former Yugoslavia and some of the Baltic countries as growth markets, as well as Poland, where we see a real, completely unprecedented, resurgence in demand," Tollman explains.
I am often asked how we find our experiences and with great difficulty, I always answer!
Everyone would do it if it was convenient.
That's why people are actually traveling with Trafalgar to take advantage of that study and expertise.
"Simply from going to trade shows, you can not find these experiences-you have to knock on doors, ask friends of friends and keep your mind open."
Trafalgar has noticed a shift in the booking window when it comes to actually making travel plans, Tollman continues.
Our European and British revenues vary from where they have been heading for years.
The interest we see is currently higher than net bookings even though they remain strong, and what this means is that we have entered a time of uncertainty.
Politics in the United States, an election in Australia and economics here in the United Kingdom have all changed the booking window, and people are now booking even closer to leaving.
Trafalgar therefore went out of our way to support our travel agent partners, to give them the assurance and that has been well received with the 100 percent assured departures here in Europe.
Travelers have a common sense of 'why book now?' There is a rise in production, but a decline in transformation.
Instead of the six or seven months we've seen in the past, we now see bookings 90 days out. People are wondering whether they need to book so early and prefer to wait and see.
With Brexit, people don't think that Britain would shut down, they just don't know what it would look like, so before booking, they prefer to wait and see.
One of the biggest opportunities I see when I look forward to is outbound from here in the United Kingdom, there is a tremendous potential for growth.
"Major legacy brands have been having problems, others have been pulling out, but I am a strong believer that some of the best opportunities occur when there is a little uncertainty in a market.
"Here in the UK, we have put in new structures to take advantage of that."
Tollman, when we spoke last year, pointed to the position of travel agents as a key to the Travel Corporation's success, a message reiterated by Jonathan Raggett, chief executive of Red Carnation.
However the Trafalgar chief warns that their position is shifting, with fewer young travellers using conventional high-street agents.
Research conducted last year by the company suggested that half of potential travelers believe the time and research needed to schedule a vacation makes a trip unduly stressful, with agents now required to add value to reduce the demands of choosing where to go.
What emerged from the study was an unexpected customer perspective; today travelers are frustrated by the excess of options, choosing what to purchase is becoming increasingly difficult.
They were searching for 'real and authentic' travel while looking at travel, but this is increasingly difficult to get. You do not just go and knock on local doors and ask to come in.
People read guides and research on the internet about their journey, but they end up doing almost the same things.
"These are all things that are beginning to bubble up in the minds of consumers, and I say to our agents when I look at that that's your greatest opportunity."
He adds: "My trade challenge is one of the reasons why people will not visit a travel agent if you are no more than an order taker, and you add no real value to the purchase cycle."
Following your own research, if all an agent does is book a holiday for you then what value do they add?
What I'm telling agents is that the best chance is to become a travel professional, to add value, and your future will never be brighter.
Finally, the increasing importance of overtourism, a subject where Tollman has been especially outspoken, is discussed in our discussion.
"Overtourism is a reality, and when I hear people in our industry say I am only 'x' percentage of tourism, the thing that antagonizes and frustrates me the most is that I am not part of the problem," he explains.
But the fact is we have to look at things from the eyes of the locals if we are in the travel industry.
If they see travel as a problem, then that is the truth-after all it is their home.
As an industry, we should look at a few main principals, the first being the value of dissemination.
This means moving away from only the iconic: the advantage of tourism must be felt by local people and if all you do is visit the iconic places, there is no real gain for people.
"This implies that there is no real benefit to tourism, there is only pollution from crowds-it needs to be done in a way that benefits locals."
Secondly, 365 tourism must ensure that you bring visitors throughout the year.
If everybody goes at the same time, you end up with these immense blocks and nothing else.
We continually question ourselves as to how we can become a provider of year-round travel.
"As with our autumn, winter, spring series, where we changed the entire costing model to ensure that we could inspire people to travel year-round, this again requires an open mind."
However, perhaps somewhat predictably, Tollman believes that government taxation is not the way to minimize overtourism.
I am irritated by governments that over-tax the travel industry," he concludes."
We are not local constituents, but they see travel as a necessary evil, but they do not see it in the larger context of its financial advantages.
Governments need to recognize that not all tourism is the same, they need to investigate the effect visitors have on a destination they are visiting.
For example, we're supporting the destination in Venice, where we have Be My Guests and Uniworld river cruises.
We take guests around the lagoon, helping, for instance, to benefit local fishermen, which is very different from anyone who comes on a cruise ship and has very little contribution to the economy.
"If an organization does not contribute, then of course, there might be an opportunity to tax more but governments need to be very careful."

OSCE PA Migration Committee members hear from Greek Minister and civil society on the situation on Lesbos and other islands
In a discussion today with the Greek Minister of Migration and Asylum Notis Mitarachi, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly Ad Hoc Committee on Migration members heard about the situation following the fires which destroyed the Moria Reception and Identification Centre in early September. Minister Mitarachi also provided an update on the handling of the coronavirus outbreak in the context of migration as well as plans for future reception and accommodation of asylum seekers.
Opening the meeting, Ad Hoc Committee Acting Chair Margareta Cederfelt (MP, Sweden) noted that the OSCE PA attaches particular importance to the development of the migratory situation in Greece and recognizes the extensive efforts made by consecutive Greek governments. The Assembly, she said, will remain committed to providing assistance while advocating for comprehensive, sustainable and people-centered solutions to challenges of migration.
Minister Mitarachi said that migration flows to Greece have dropped drastically since the beginning of the year, noting that transfers from Eastern Aegean Islands to the mainland have increased, significantly reducing the congestion at the reception facilities on the islands.
Regarding the recent fires at the Moria camp, he pointed out that a police investigation is being carried out in order to determine the causes of the fire, while six people have already been arrested and prosecuted. Mitarachi underlined that Greece responded swiftly to the needs of the people affected by the fire, setting up an emergency camp within four days while stressing that efforts are ongoing for the winterization of the new facility in co-operation with UNHCR and others.
Ad Hoc Committee members participating in the online meeting included Daniela De Ridder (MP, Germany), Lord Alfred Dubs (MP, United Kingdom), Gudrun Kugler (MP, Austria), Kyriakos Kyriakou-Hadjiyianni (MP, Cyprus), and Evangelos Syrigos (MP, Greece).
Members raised questions related to how the fires in September may have affected the processing of asylum claims, how to ensure that reunification with family members in EU Member States under the Dublin regulation, how to avoid a repeat of the Moria fires and the reaching of critical living conditions for people hosted. Other questions were raised about vulnerable persons who were facing considerable challenges related to their general psychological and physical wellbeing, notably women and unaccompanied minors, and whether more countries needed to step forward to contribute to relocation efforts for vulnerable asylum seekers.
Mitarachi responded that the fires had not destroyed any essential documents thanks to the digitization of the application process so the processing of asylum claims had not been significantly affected. He also discussed how Brexit has affected co-operation between Greece and the United Kingdom, noting that efforts continue to be taken to prioritize the reunification of families.
Other topics included efforts being made to secure the safety and provision of essential services in camps as well as challenges to the labour integration of migrants and refugees in the context of the COVID-19 crisis. With fewer jobs available, it is a big challenge for refugees to find employment, Mitarachi pointed out. Finally, while he welcomed the ad hoc relocation offers by EU Member States, he emphasized the need for a permanent and stable solution, highlighting the recently EU Pact for Migration as an important proposal that needs to be considered.
Following the discussion with the Minister, Ad Hoc Committee members were briefed by civil society organizations currently present on Lesbos.
Topics discussed included challenges related to the closure of two open accommodation camps currently hosting vulnerable refugees as well as the closure in the spring of a COVID-19 isolation facility set up by Doctors Without Borders. The participants also highlighted the increasingly difficult operating conditions for civil society organizations and journalists working in the area of migration in Lesbos and elsewhere in Greece.
With imminent camp closures, it was stressed that the Migration Committee can contribute to the consideration of permanent and durable solutions to provide safe and dignified living conditions for asylum seekers on the Greek Islands, in particular for minors and other persons in vulnerable situations and in need of specialized treatment.

UN 101: Summary
Rifqi Dirga Syahputra_072011233116_Finland_SummaryUN101
United Nations as The World’s Guardian
United Nations (UN) itself is a continuation of the failed League of Nations, which the previous duty was to prevent another conflict such as The Great War back in 1914 until 1918. On 1st January 1942, President of The United States, Franklin D Roosevelt proposed the United Nations to other countries in order to annihilate the Axis power such as Nazi Germany, Italy, and Japan. There were 26 countries who gathered in Washington D.C to sign the declaration of United Nations. On 26th June 1945, the UN charter was signed by 50 countries around the world except for Poland. The first to sign was China and the last was United States of America (USA). UN is Headquartered in New York 10017 United States. The First Secretary General of the UN was Gladwyn Jebb and the first elected Secretary General of the UN was Trygve Lie. Currently there are 193 countries members in the United Nations and South Sudan was the last join the UN until now.
The United Nations General Assembly or people often call it as UNGA hold the UN meeting with the members in the UN HQ. The meetings itself are divided into two sessions. First, the Regular Sessions which discussing general topics and as a chance for representatives of member states to take part about an issue which they think as an important one. The meetings are annually held on Tuesday of the third week of September and it ends on a designated date at the start of the session. Second, the Special Sessions that initiated by UN member states, Security Council, or the UNGA. The meetings for these sessions are notified within two weeks before the opening by the Security Council and ten days if summoned by member states or the UNGA. If the meetings themselves are really emergency, the meetings will be notified one day prior the opening. The flow of the meetings usually starts by the address from the Secretary General. Then, address by the president of the UN and address by the Heads of State members. After that, the debate session in the meeting. In the end, the voting starts. In order to begin the meetings, there must be at least a third of the member states present in the meetings. In the other hand, to start the important decisions, they must be voted by at least two-third of the member states. Each member state has only one right to vote in the meetings. There is an exception for the Security Council, because there’s a right called as Veto right for the permanent members which are USA, United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia. If any one of them use the Veto right and cast a negative vote, the decision will fail in the end.
The United Nations are composed by six organs. First, the General Assembly as the main deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the UN. It consists of 193 member states and hold meetings in September. The UNGA is composed by six committees which are Disarmament & International Security, the second committee is Economic and Financial, SOCHUM, Special Political, Decolonization Administrative and Budgetary, and Legal. Second, the Security Council as a council which has primary responsibility, under the UN Charter, for the maintenance of international peace and security. It composed of five permanent members (USA, UK, France, Russia, and China) and ten non-permanent members. It also Can impose sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security. Thirdly, Economic and Social Council as the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as implementation of internationally agreed development goals. It consisted of 54 countries selected by the UNGA every three years. Fourth, International Court of Justice as the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as implementation of internationally agreed development goals and its seat Peace Palace is located in Hague, Netherland. Fifth, Trusteeship Council which was established in 1945 by the UN charter. It used to provide international supervision for 11 Trust Territories and ensuring the adequate steps were taken to prepare the Territories for self-government and independence. Lastly, The Secretariat who does the administrative and substantive work of the UN under the command and order of the UNGA, UNSC, and the other organs. The Secretary General is the one who provides guidance for the administrative work.
United Nations is one of the largest IGOs in the world because the member states consisting of mostly all countries around the world. In order to be accepted as one of the member states in UN, they must pass some processes first. First, submission which the countries that wish to join must send a formal letter and application letter to the UNGA. Second, the review which is done by the Security Council to be given an admission recommendation. Third, the vote where the UNGA get the admission from the Security Council and the voting takes place in the UNGA meetings. Lastly, when the admission is accepted, the country will officially become an active member of the United Nations. The permanent observers are called as special membership in the UN. The two permanent observers are mom-member states and IGOs. Holy See and State of Palestine are the current non-member states, because their status as a state is still unclear. But they are recognized as special members by the UNGA. Besides, organizations like Red Cross, European Union, and ASEAN are considered as special members and granted permission to attend the meetings by the General Assembly.
From the presentation of the material above regarding the United Nations, we can conclude that the UN has a long history in its establishment. Then, the UN also consists of six organs that contribute to each other's world. Apart from that, there are also ways for the UN to carry out its sessions to solve world problems. Finally, the UN also has a membership that belongs to several parties and countries, and the way a country becomes a member of the United Nations is not something easy, but must go through several processes or stages. So far, the UN has been the guardian of world peace until now, so that many problems have been resolved by the United Nations and in the future the UN has prepared agendas to protect our beloved earth.

The queen was married to a man who wanted only power, Zant. When Minerva went to the world of Light and fell in love with a Hylian—and became pregnant with a hybrid between the two races—, Zant was so furious that he poisoned her. Minerva died, but her daughter, Jezilia (or Kira) lived on. Zant thought that, since the queen “died in child birth”, he would be king. Instead, it was Midna who gained the crown of princess at only six years old. Zant retreated to hide the fact that he killed the past queen, and he stayed hidden for thirteen years. When he finally emerged, he had the power of his “god” on his side, a power he did not own. He took Midna’s kingdom from her and turned her to an imp when she refused to relent to him. With Link and Kira’s help, Midna defeated Zant and killed him—her own father. Finally, she destroyed the gateway between the Twilight Realm and Hyrule. (YES I KNOW THIS IS NOT CANON, this is my own headcanon I’ve had for years, so I’m using it uwu~~)

She fights best when relying on others, but can fight if needed. However, she isn’t too good at it since she never really needed to learn. SPECIAL POWERS: Not all Twili have powers like Midna (which is why Zant was so power hungry, since he didn’t have the magic she has). This is because she has royal Twili blood within her, and due to that she has powers unique to any other Twili. She can teleport objects and people through twilight, as well as make anything (even herself) dissolve into twilight. She’s also capable of changing her appearance and storing objects through twilight. Finally, she can create blasts of twilight that harm her enemies. WEAPON(S) OF CHOICE: In her imp form, she uses her hair as a sort of large hand to grab enemies and damage them with her twilight electricity. In her true form, she can summon a twilight-made spear. STRENGTHS: Her powers give her the best advantage that she will receive, as she isn’t too good at fighting. WEAKNESSES: Mainly inexperience. Thus why she relies on (primarily) Link and Kira when enemies approach.

While initial details were scant, the agreements signed included a U.S. letter of intent to “support Saudi Arabia’s defense needs” with sales of a number of items — naval ships, tanks and other vehicles — that were the subject of agreements under earlier administrations.
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — President Donald Trump made a splashy debut on the world stage here Saturday, ushering in a new era in U.S.-Saudi Arabian relations by signing a joint “strategic vision” that includes a $110 billion in American arms sales and other new investments that the administration said would bring hundreds of thousands of jobs.
“It was a great day,” Trump said. He cited “tremendous investments in the United States … and jobs, jobs, jobs.”
While initial details were scant, the agreements signed included a U.S. letter of intent to “support Saudi Arabia’s defense needs” with sales of a number of items – naval ships, tanks and other vehicles – that were the subject of agreements under earlier administrations, as well as some new items that had never passed the discussion stage, such as sophisticated THAAD missile defense systems.
Other items are intended to modernize Saudi Arabia’s cyber defense and modernize its airborne intelligence-gathering and secure its borders.
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, in a news conference with his Saudi counterpart, described common views on counterterrorism, the threat from Iran and regional security. He outlined “like-minded” goals in the security and economic spheres and said, “we’re very proud of this relationship that we are embarking on with the kingdom.”
What emerged as a veritable lovefest between the two governments was a marked contrast to years of growing estrangement under President Barack Obama.

“This is the beginning of a turning point in the relationship between the United States and the Arab and Islamic world,” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir proclaimed alongside Tillerson.
Trump’s visit, he said, “begins to change the conversation” with the Islamic world “from one of enmity to one of partnership.”
Trump was received like visiting royalty from the moment Air Force One touched down in Riyadh Saturday morning, after an all-night flight from Washington, where he hoped to leave behind the growing Russia scandal threatening his presidency.
In a series of official arrival ceremonies — at the airport and the Royal Court palace — Trump, his wife, Melania, and an entourage including virtually his entire senior White House staff and some of his Cabinet, were serenaded by military bands, treated to a flyover of Saudi jets, feted in opulent palaces and given the undivided attention of King Salman, the ruler of this ultra-conservative Muslim nation.
As Trump arrived at Murabba Palace for a royal dinner, hundreds of Saudi men in long, white robes danced the Ardha, a traditional sword dance that is performed on Saudi National Day and in honor of special guests.
Trump, grinning broadly at the festivities, waded in and took a few obligatory dips in the dance. Several of Trump’s male aides, along with Salman, participated with more enthusiasm. Tillerson and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross raised swords and linked arms with Saudis, chanting to the beat of feathered drums, while Chief of Staff Reince Priebus, chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon and National Economic Council director Gary Cohn also laughed and swayed.
The ebullient welcome reflected a kingdom eager to rekindle its relationship with the United States, and to use the visit to declare and solidify its own leadership role in the Muslim world.
Jubeir, in the news conference with Tillerson, heaped praise on Trump, saying that the foreign policy novice had the “vision,” “strength” and “decisiveness,” in the estimation of the Saudi leadership, to bring peace between Israel and Palestine. The minister went on to borrow one of Trump’s favorite campaign slogans, saying that a new relationship between America and the Arab world could “drain the swamps from which extremism and terrorism emanates.”
In their private talks, Trump and Salman discussed their shared view of the threat from Iran. Asked about Friday’s re-election of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Tillerson said he hoped Rouhani would use his term to “begin dismantling Iran’s network of terror,” stop destabilizing the Middle East, end ballistic missile testing and restore basic rights.
However, there was public silence from the U.S. delegation on the issue of human rights in Saudi Arabia, which has imprisoned peaceful critics of the government and has sharply restricted the rights of women. Ahead of the visit, Trump’s advisers said the president did not intend to “lecture” his hosts.
Obama, who sold about $115 billion in U.S. weapons to Saudi Arabia during his eight years as president, had slowed military cooperation with the kingdom in large part because of what it considered Saudi Arabia’s indiscriminate bombing of civilians in Yemen. The Trump deal puts those agreements back on track and expanded them.
Beyond the closed-door meetings, this desert capital was decked out for a celebration. As Riyadh baked in triple-digit heat under a pall of dust, American and Saudi flags flew from lightpoles. The facade of the Ritz Carlton, the palace-like hotel where Trump is staying, was illuminated with massive photographs of the two leaders and the red, white, blue and green of the two nations’ flags.
Salman, 81, who ascended to the Saudi throne in early 2015, was brought in a golf cart to the airport red carpet laid out for Trump’s arrival.
The two exchanged greetings as a military brass band played, distant cannons boomed and seven Saudi jets flew overhead in formation, trailing red, white and blue smoke.
“I’m very happy to see you,” Salman told Trump, who responded that it was a “great honor” to be visiting the kingdom.
Trump and the first lady — who had her hair uncovered and wore black long sleeves and flared pants, cinched with a wide, metallic gold belt – were presented bouquets of flowers by three traditionally dressed little girls.
Salman’s presence at the airport ceremony was a sign of the importance of Trump’s visit to the Saudis. Chatting through an interpreter, the men then walked into the VIP reception terminal at King Khalid International Airport for a cup of coffee. Salman rode with Trump in the president’s armored Cadillac for the drive into the city.
The only U.S. president to make Saudi Arabia his first foreign visit, Trump was presented with the highest honor for a foreign dignitary, the collar of Abdulaziz al-Saud, named for the kingdom’s founder, which Salman hung on a thick gold chain around Trump’s neck.
In an ornate reception hall at the Royal Court, members of the U.S. delegation lined up to shake hands with Salman, then took a seat along the periphery of the grand room aside a member of the Saudi delegation.
On the dais with Trump were the first lady, daughter Ivanka and Tillerson. Ross, Priebus, Bannon, and Trump adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner also were there.
Lunch with the king followed. Spirits were high, with Kushner greeting national security adviser H.R. McMaster with a high-five as they then entered the room for a closed-door bilateral discussion.
The official delegations discussed issues including oil, Iran and Syria. Saudi Arabia is part of the U.S.-led coalition against the Islamic State, but relations were strained with Obama over his failure to push for the ouster of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad with strong support for rebels fighting against him.
During his campaign, Trump indicated he was uninterested in U.S. involvement in Syria’s civil war, but as president has spoken out against Assad and last month launched a cruise missile attack against a Syrian government air base.
As they chatted following the award ceremony, Salman was overheard telling Trump that “Syria too used to be one of the most advanced countries. We used to get our professors from Syria. They served our kingdom. Unfortunately, they too brought destruction to their own country. You could destroy a country in mere seconds, but it takes a lot of effort.”
On Sunday, Trump will meet with the heads of the six Persian Gulf monarchies of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and an Arab Islamic American Summit of at least 40 nations, primarily from the Middle East, Africa and Asia.
Before a royal banquet Saturday night, Trump met with Crown Prince Muhammad bin Nayef, the heir to the Saudi throne, and separately with the Deputy Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, who visited Trump at the White House earlier this spring.
The highlight of Trump’s stop in Riyadh is expected to be a speech on Islam that he will deliver Sunday to the larger summit meeting. Though his campaign was marked by harsh anti-Muslim rhetoric, Trump is planning to preach religious tolerance here, inviting the Arab world to join the United States in combating terrorism and evil in the region.
Trump also planned to participate in the inauguration of a new Saudi center to fight radicalism and promote moderation, as well as take part in a Twitter forum with young people.
On Sunday, Melania Trump will make some cultural visits , while Ivanka Trump plans to hold a roundtable session on “women’s economic empowerment.” The role of women in Saudi society, where they are denied basic rights, is a source of controversy for the monarchy.
On Monday, Trump will travel to Jerusalem for meetings with Israeli officials, as well as a visit with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Bethlehem, and then to Rome, where he will have a private audience with Pope Francis.
Trump then visits Brussels for a meeting with NATO leaders, including a bilateral session with newly-elected French President Emmanuel Macron, and finally to Sicily, Italy, where he will attend a G7 summit of the United States’ closest economic allies.
U.S. Affirms $110 Billion Deal To Sell Ships, Tanks And Missile Defense Systems To Saudi Arabia While initial details were scant, the agreements signed included a U.S. letter of intent to “support Saudi Arabia’s defense needs” with sales of a number of items — naval ships, tanks and other vehicles — that were the subject of agreements under earlier administrations.

How Saudi agents plotted to dismember Jamal Khashoggi and other chilling takeaways from a U.N. Investigation
By Claire Parker | Published June 19 at 12:33 PM ET | Washington Post | Posted June 19, 2019 |
A special U.N. investigator released a new report Wednesday on her inquest into the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The 101-page report, compiled by special rapporteur Agnes Callamard, provides new details of Khashoggi’s murder inside the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul in October, and it calls for an investigation of the role of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. Here are the key takeaways from the report:
AUDIO RECORDINGS PROVIDE NEW DETAILS ABOUT KHASHOGGI’S KILLING
Saudi agents discussed a plan to dismember Khashoggi’s body 13 minutes before Khashoggi entered the consulate on Oct. 2, according to the report. “Joints will be separated,” forensic expert Salah Tubaigy told Maher Mutreb, whom the report describes as a Saudi intelligence officer. The two discussed which type of bag to place the body in — leather, they suggested — and referred to Khashoggi as a “sacrificial animal.”
These were among the new details revealed in Callamard’s report. Turkish authorities had previously determined that Khashoggi was strangled and dismembered inside the consulate. But Callamard’s report — based on a five-month investigation — provides the most complete picture of Khashoggi’s death to date. Turkish authorities allowed Callamard to listen to about 45 minutes of audio — out of seven hours’ worth — that they recorded in the consulate. Her report also reveals that Saudi agents initially told Khashoggi they planned to kidnap him to forcibly return him to Saudi Arabia. But shortly afterward, the report says, there were “sounds of a struggle.”
EFFORTS BY SAUDI AGENTS TO COVER UP THE KILLING
The report also details the steps Saudi agents took to cover up Khashoggi’s killing. “The interception of Mr. Khashoggi was the result of a planned and elaborate mission involving extensive coordination and resources,” Callamard wrote.
According to Turkish intelligence, the report says, a Saudi security team swept the Saudi Consulate for bugs on Sept. 27 — six days before Khashoggi’s death. Khashoggi first visited the consulate about obtaining a marriage license for his upcoming nuptials with Turkish fiancee Hatice Cengiz on Sept. 28, and officials told him he must return to the consulate on Oct. 2. Saudi officials relayed news to Riyadh of the journalist’s impending return to the consulate, according to the U.N. report, and a security attache said of Khashoggi, “It’s known that he is one of the people sought.”
In a phone call later that day, Saudi Arabia’s consul general in Istanbul, Mohammed Alotaibi, referred to an “assignment” that was “security related.” A team of Saudi agents arrived on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2 to await Khashoggi. After the struggle that led to his death, men carrying “what seem like plastic trash bags” and at least one suitcase exited the building, followed by a body double wearing what seemed to be Khashoggi’s clothes, the report says.
In addition, “the Special Rapporteur found credible evidence pointing to the crime scenes having been thoroughly, even forensically, cleaned,” the report says. “These indicate that the Saudi investigation was not conducted in good faith, and that it may amount to obstructing justice.”
MBS MUST HAVE KNOWN
The report places the blame for Khashoggi’s killing squarely on Saudi Arabia, and it adds that the circumstances of his murder could be classified as torture — another violation of international law. It also says that “credible evidence” warrants an additional probe into Crown Prince Mohammed’s role in the killing.
The CIA concluded previously that the crown prince likely ordered Khashoggi’s killing. The U.N. report backs up that finding, pointing to the magnitude of coordination and resources behind the murder plot as evidence that the highest levels of Saudi leadership must have known about it.
“While the Saudi government claims that these resources were put in place by Ahmed Asiri, every expert consulted finds it inconceivable that an operation of this scale could be implemented without the Crown Prince being aware, at a minimum, that some sort of mission of a criminal nature, directed at Mr. Khashoggi, was being launched,” Callamard wrote.
There’s no evidence that the United States or Turkey knew about the plot to kill Khashoggi beforehand
Callamard found “no evidence” that the CIA knew about threats to Khashoggi’s life before his death.
“The killing of Mr. Khashoggi has highlighted the vulnerabilities of dissidents living abroad, and the risks they are facing of covert actions by the authorities of their countries of origin or non-State actors associated to them,” she wrote.
While countries hosting such dissidents bear responsibility for ensuring their safety, Callamard did not find evidence that Turkey or the United States violated “their obligation to protect Mr. Khashoggi.”
But her report warned that if proof emerged that the CIA or other countries’ intelligence agencies had prior knowledge that Khashoggi’s life was in danger, they “could be found to be in breach of their responsibility to protect, including to warn him.”
The report casts doubt on Saudi Arabia’s judicial process
Saudi Arabia has changed its narrative several times since Khashoggi’s death. At one point the Saudis blamed the killing on a fistfight gone wrong. The kingdom arrested 21 Saudis in connection with Khashoggi’s death and eventually charged 11 of them with killing him — although the government has not made their names public. Callamard published a list of the 11 names based on intelligence from sources in several governments, and that list includes some — but not all — of the Saudi agents she determined belonged to the 15-person hit team.
Airing concerns about the Saudi judicial process, Callamard called for a suspension of the trial. “The trial underway in Saudi Arabia will not deliver credible accountability,” she wrote.
She did not let Turkey off the hook, either. “Both the investigations conducted by Saudi Arabia and Turkey failed to meet international standards regarding the investigation into unlawful deaths,” she wrote.
“Turkey has not initiated proceedings yet and hopes for credible accountability are weak in a country with such a track record of imprisonment of journalists,” she added.

Background Research on Rollercoasters utilising VR or Interactivity
This is purely research and from websites, it is not my own writing but a compilation of topical broad research on my topic of choice.
The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
youtube
This is an example of 3D technology being used to increase immersion in an attraction (1999)
“The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man is a motion-based 3D dark ride located at the Islands of Adventure, Orlando and Universal Studios Japan, Osaka theme parks. Built for Islands of Adventure's opening in 1999, the attraction is a hybrid ride combining special roving motion vehicles with 3D projection, elaborate physical sets, and both practical and tactile effects. The attraction took three years to produce, with many new technologies and techniques being developed. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man has been well received, winning several awards including the Golden Ticket Award for Best Dark Ride for twelve consecutive years.
In addition to the ride's motion base and 3D projections, special effects including fog machines, fire, wind, heat, mist, strobe lights, and water spray are also employed throughout the attraction. All of these effects, along with the ride system, 3D projections, and soundtrack, are controlled by a central industrial control system which knows, to one-thirtieth of a second, when they are to execute. Just shy of the ride's debut, the director of show and ride engineering at Islands of Adventure, Steve Blum, described The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man as the "most technically complex of all of the attractions" at the park. Vice president of design and creative development Mark Woodbury stated that they "would not have been able to tell this particular story if it weren't for the technical tools"
Arthur Levine of About.com gave the ride 5 stars describing the ride as "an incredibly sophisticated attraction" that "blurs the line between virtual and reality so well that you'll emerge slack-jawed and awe-struck". He stated the enhancements made to the film projections in 2012 and 2013 "make the attraction even more immersive and awe-inspiring". Brady MacDonald of the Los Angeles Times rated the ride his second favorite in the world, after Disneyland's Indiana Jones Adventure. In an interview for Amusement Business, Mark Hansen Jr. of Theme Park Critic praised the ride in stating that their dream ride would combine The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man with a 4th Dimension roller coaster such as X at Six Flags Magic Mountain. Theme Park Insider rated the ride a 9 out of 10, based on 250 reviews.”

Avatar Flight of Passage
youtube
This is an example of 3D technology being used to increase immersion in an attraction (2018)
“Avatar Flight of Passage is a 3D flying simulator attraction within Pandora – The World of Avatar at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Set in the Avatar universe, the attraction allows guests to take flight on a native mountain Banshee and soar across the landscape of Pandora.
On February 27, 2018, after four incidents had occurred, Disney added warning cards for riders before entering the ride. The cards are similar to those on Mission: Space and warn riders about fear of heights, motion sickness, and the seating restraints. These cards were removed in late 2018 and have been replaced with a pre-recorded message which communicates similar information to guests. The message plays only in the queue room immediately before the ride experience.”
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avatar_Flight_of_Passage
““There were a number of things that people really wanted to do on Pandora, and one of them was flying on the back of a Banshee,” David Lester, show programmer at Walt Disney Imagineering, tells me on a busy press day. In the world of theme parks, Imagineers are the closest thing you can find to rock stars, and the company has doubled the number of Imagineer groups available to discuss Pandora in order to meet the demand. “Every decision about how to create this experience, what technology to use, was all designed with that in mind: How do we make it feel like every person engaging in this experience is truly there?”
The ride mechanics are similar to Soarin’, Disney’s hang-glider simulator. When it begins, audiences face a gigantic 3D screen, with the chairs pivoting and tilting to recreate the feeling of plummeting down the face of a cliff, or pulling left in a tight corkscrew around a floating mountain. Bursts of wind and sprays of mist enhance the sense of immersion, while visually it appears you’re inside Avatar itself. Audiences first met Pandora and the Na’vi in 3D CG environments, and returning to that kind of world in Flight of Passage feels totally organic.
“We're illusion designers,” Imagineering executive producer Amy Jupiter tells me. “The whole thing about individualized flight is that the technology is supposed to fall away. That's our job, to really help you know that you're flying on a Banshee. The first thing that says, ‘Oh, technology!’ will take you out of that.””
