12th book I read in 2019
Title: Sömntåg, drömtåg
Authors: Sherri Duskey Rinker & Tom Lichtenheld
Notes: Got this because I thought I had some vague memory of the cover, so I was hoping for some kind of nostalgia trip flipping through this. But I recognize nothing about this book so I guess I was wrong. It was still a very cute little story though.

No female characters. Rhyming is awful. Note to author: it is NOT called a cement truck. It is a Concrete mixing truck. As someone in the construction industry, I am disappointed the author did not use correct terminology especially in a children's book

☕️ ur fave kids shows/books OR ur fave regular shows/books
I have strong opinions about kids shows and books!! I always spent a lot of time around kids as a young adult, because I did tons of babysitting, and then I worked in a daycare for several years, so I already knew by the time I had my son that 95% of everything made for kids will make your brain melt out your ears. But when you find good things, it's SO magical.
Shows:
1. Okay, so at least 80% of the content consumed in my household is Thomas and Friends-related, and like...yes, they have their issues. Especially in the early seasons, the train are always being AWFUL to each other. But the newer seasons that are on Netflix are really good, imo. The plotlines are fun and they always reaffirm the lesson at the end, which I think is good for the youngsters.
2. Also on Netflix, there's this show called Octonauts, which is about the animals that live in like an underwater research lab and study/help sea creatures, and it is SO cute and makes me wish I lived in an underwater research lab.
3. The Stinky and Dirty Show!! On Amazon Prime. It's a show about an excavator and a garbage truck who are friends! They solve problems together! I unironically would watch it even without my kid present.
4. Honerable mention: all the old Mickey Mouse shorts on Disney+. You just can't beat the classics.
Books:
1. There's this series of construction site books by Sherri Duskey Rinker that are all really good. Beautifully illustrated, well written, my kid owns them all and I never get tired of reading them.
2. Dragons Love Tacos is basically a meme among parents by now but it's actually...really good, the perfect length, quirky, fun, love it.
3. Other than that, we really just love all the old classics. The Little Golden Books (particularly Pokey Little Puppy). The Mr. Men and Little Miss books. Goodnight Moon. Where the Wild Things Are. I try not to be a snob about it, but sometimes things that are older are just better!

Book Review: Construction Site on Christmas Night
Book Review: Construction Site on Christmas Night
Tumblr media
My son will be 8 in just a few short weeks. He has always loved vehicles of all types, especially construction vehicles. He’s had a few books about construction vehicles since he was very young; even now he still likes to look at them sometimes. When I found Construction Site on Christmas Night by Sherri Duskey Rinker, I knew he would enjoy reading it at bedtime.

Today’s #picturebook is The 12 Sleighs of Christmas by Sherri Duskey Rinker (of Goodnight Goodnight Construction Sight, fame) & @mrjakeparker via @raincoastbooks
With Santa’s sleigh damaged just DAYS before Christmas the elves get wildly creative with sleigh ideas and have a build off!  Twelves sleigh alternatives are presented to Santa, each more exciting and hilarious than the last.  But, while the sleighs are amazing, are they really right for the job of quietly, magically travelling the earth to bring presents to boys and girls?  Is the tried and true “classic sleigh & reindeer” ultimately the best?
And most importantly, is Santa a good driver? (spoiler: no)
This Christmas picture book is a hilarious and creative read for smalls, with illustrations that practically vroom and roar with life.  Though wordy enough to qualify for smalls 4+up, it can easily be abbreviated for smalls as young as 2.5 and was an immediate favourite with my own small.  For vehicle enthusiast smalls this rhyming story is rich with car, truck, ship and air terminology and equally enjoyable for grown-ups as well.  A rollicking holiday treat for all!

ANOTHER LITTLE BOOK ROUNDUP! 📚 . . 30/47: THE SNAIL AND THE WHALE (Julia Donaldson/Alex Scheffler) ~ The Gruffalo’s creators also teamed up for this gem about a globetrotting 🐌 & 🐳.To say JD has an intuitive feel for rhythm & rhyme is an understatement. AS’s kid-friendly illos are the perfect match. #Kidlit gold 🥇 . . 31/47: THIS IS SADIE (Sara O’Leary/Julie Morstad) ~ A team so nice, they’re on the list twice! Even a tiny version of Sadie can’t keep her big imagination down. Through the power is story, Sadie goes everywhere, & this is the lesson we should all carry with us. Incredible illos. 🦊 . . 32/47: STEAM TRAIN DREAM TRAIN (Sherri Duskey Rinker/Tom Lichtenheld) ~ A menagerie of cute animals loads a train as it chugs into dreamland. Impeccable rhythm & rhyme paired with illos that seem effortless (but surely aren’t!). A favorite in our house. Psst—it’s bedside!🐵🐰🐻 . . 33/47: ROBO-SAUCE (Adam Rubin/Daniel Salmieri) ~ Do you think that some crazy sauce can turn you, your dog and your whole family into robots? “Jumping Jingleheimer Schmidt—it worked!” With lines like that, you can’t go wrong. Even the book turns into a robot—seriously! ❤️ 🤖 ⚡️ . . 34/47: GEORGE AND THE DRAGON (Chris Wormell) ~ This book has always been a favorite in our family. It’s about a tiny mouse named George and a mighty dragon with a deep, dark secret. Can you guess what it is? Truly wondrous illustrations, but I might like CW’s linocuts even more! 🐉 . . 35/47: THE POLAR EXPRESS (Chris Van Allsburg) ~ Out of season, but never out of style. Beautiful languid prose, sumptuous illos, and a twist ending so powerful and arresting that I’ve tried to write stories with a similarly effective twist—with no luck! Forever a classic. 🚂🎅 . . #kidlit #kidlitart #greatjobmom #greatjobdad #illustration #illustratorsoninstagram #picturebooks #scalemodel #miniature https://www.instagram.com/p/BvKCJ_vBWFb/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=9jp5s306vz3d
