okay so in my brain right now as I am laying here, I am picturing Buck with a new tattoo, right? he's done something, I don't care what the piece is, feel free to make it up in your head, whatever you want. so Buck's got new ink, right, and for some fucking reason, it's on his hamstring, and it's large. takes up a lotta space.

and so yeah, they're sitting on the couch with beer and Buck keeps shifting in his seat bc it's a bit itchy and stinging, and Eddie is like "why don't you just lay down on the floor? you're not really even watching this show/movie/whatever anyway," and so Buck does, and he's wearing these like, old joggers that he's chopped into shorts that are on the short side of short, which Eddie is curiously fascinated by, so yeah the coffee table's pushed over and Buck plants himself stomach-down and pillows his head on his crossed arms and just falls into a happy little doze, half sleeping, half awake, and without any permission from Eddie's brain, his mouth goes "can I see" even though Buck showed him the picture the tattoo artist snapped before he covered it with that clingwrappy stuff.

Buck hums an assent and reaches down with one hand to hike up the shorts on one side, but he's not very coordinated or awake, so Eddie leans forward, elbows braced on his knees to get a better look and is.

That's Buck's leg.

and yeah, like. duh. he's seen Buck's legs before. but not usually.... that much leg. And Buck's got a lot of leg. He's like, 90% leg, probably. The low lamplight is making his leg hair glint a red-gold, where it hasn't been shaved off in preparation for the tattoo. Buck's pulled the leg of his shorts up so high that Eddie can see where the light tan on his calves fades into his natural skin tone, creamy white and dotted with freckles. so high that when Eddie squints, he can glimpse the curve of where Buck's leg creases and the (very slight) curve of his ass begins. he must be wearing briefs, today, not boxers, or else he's - going commando?

Eddie's mouth floods with saliva. his heart is pounding. he's on his knees, and his fingers are dancing over that skin, over the downy hair, over the plastic, over the ink, over the cottony hem of those shorts, and Buck is making a quiet, desperate sound, suddenly very awake, and saying, "eddie?"

"I. I want..." Eddie doesn't know what he wants. Eddie knows exactly what he wants. He wants to sink his teeth into that curve, wants to pull those shorts all the way down and nose into the space between Buck's thighs and breathe him in. He wants to dig his fingers into the soft flesh above Buck's hips. "I want to touch you."

"oh, please," Buck begs, squirming at every movement of his fingers. "I want you to, please, Eddie, please do it."

and then Eddie does all those things! YAY!

i'll defend fanfic for my whole life. like the joy it brings is genuinely transformative and indulgent in a way unique to the genre. it isn't meant for a market, it isn't meant to be sold or marketed. it is born out of such care and passion for a media that one must write and must share it, so other folks can enjoy it to. for no other reason than love and joy. do you know how special that is? especially in our current social and political climate.

I think the part that really kills me is that Buck never expected Eddie to be one to walk. Usually he gets about a year—at most—before someone is gone. He was, what, less than a year into adulthood when Maddie told him to go and didn't come with him? Then Abby and Ally and Taylor and Natalia and Tommy, and through all but one of those, Eddie was there. Eddie was there after the hardest one—Abby—and he stayed. He always stayed even if it was staying still, waiting for Buck to come to him. Buck always knew where to find Eddie. And then Chris left and Eddie followed and Buck couldn't and Buck knew where they were but they weren't all together. And then Eddie kept staying in El Paso and Eddie came back but he was ready to go back and only came back for good because of Bobby, and Chimney, and the 118. Not for Buck. Not even because of Buck. And yeah Eddie did it for himself and for Chris. Except they're back and now Buck is the one who's gone. Emotionally, buried in his grief he won't talk about. And now physically, moves out of Bedford st, and even though he's the one who left, it was never his place to stay anyway.

what if buck still habitually sends his reality check-in text to bobby every morning, it's not like he's expecting a reply or anything (he tells eddie somewhat defensively when eddie catches him at it one day (hey, eddie says, I get it)) but it's like one last little way to hold on to bobby's presence in his life... but then one day (it's dia de los muertos episode, abuela is there, eddie and chris talk about shannon (also it's a full moon, inevitably)) buck GETS A TEXT BACK. it's just gibberish but he freaks the fuck out. eddie's like come on it's I dunno it's a prank, buck's like who would do that to me??, eddie's like ok or it's some weird phone glitch, buck's like oh yeah a glitch JUST LIKE THE GHOST THAT CALLED 9-1-1!!! and eddie pinches the bridge of his nose very hard

so they go to athena and ask her what happened to bobby's cell phone and she (eyeing them suspiciously) tells them that as far as she knows it was buried with bobby, due to quarantine protocol. is there any chance it was left in the lab? eddie asks, picked up by someone? athena gives them an even more suspicious look and tells them everything that was in that damn room was destroyed. now tell me what is this about?

I uh I always liked his phone case, buck blurts out. I wanted to.... see what brand it was.....?

mmhhm says athena

and then eddie who is harbouring the single buddie braincell today asks her if she's still paying for bobby's number because he took over shannon's contract for a while, after she passed. and athena softens and confirms that yeah she's still paying bobby's contract, doesn't plan on stopping anytime soon, because she can't stand the thought that one day someone else might call 9-1-1 with his number

so buck's like IT'S A SIGN!!!! and eddie's like a sign of what, buck? you think bobby's a ghost? you'd want that for him? and buck snaps back if it means he's still in my life then yeah maybe I do. and he goes home to his crappy new apartment that bobby never got to see, pissed off and spiralling, and that night he texts bobby's number (bobby? is that you? are you there?) and doesn't sleep, because every time he almost nods off he jerks awake again to check his phone for new messages. but there’s nothing, and there's nothing, and when buck gets to the station in the morning he looks TERRIBLE and when eddie raises his eyebrows at him he mutters I don't wanna talk about it. and the shift passes with buck quiet and grumpy, and the next morning when they're wrapping up to hand over to b-shift buck doesn't text bobby his morning check in because if you don't send anything you can't get no reply, right?

so when his phone buzzes with a notification while he's putting on his shoes, buck grabs his phone on autopilot

and it's a message from bobby's number again, and it looks like gibberish again, like someone was typing on a touchscreen in the dark with their hands behind their back, but there are four letters spelling out a word

I’m not disagreeing with this post but the thing I find interesting about Tommy calling Buck “Evan” is that it puts Tommy on the same side as Buck’s family, and that’s not a good thing. Maddie can call him Evan because there’s a loving history there, which Tommy doesn’t have. His parents continue to do so despite Buck asking them to. Meanwhile, the 118 and their families call him Buck. And the thing that’s interesting about Tommy calling Eddie “Diaz” is that it’s the opposite, but still amounts to the same thing: it puts Tommy on the same side as Eddie’s colleagues, i.e the rest of the LAFD. Cpt Mehta calls Eddie “Diaz” when the 133 responds to his call about Charlie. I’d imagine the other firefighters and paramedics who play basketball with him also refer to Eddie as “Diaz,” as did people in the army. It has that sports-team feeling, which Eddie likes, that’s what drew him to firefighting in the first place. Yet he tells the 118 to call him Eddie, tells Buck specifically, and by doing so, he’s putting them in the position of his family. The name thing for me just cements how much of an outsider Tommy is to both Buck and Eddie, which is wild, since he spends so much of s7-8 talking about and vying for a spot inside that circle the 118 created, which at the end of the day, is the family both Buck and Eddie chose for themselves.

Tidbit Tuesday

i've been tagged for various days of the week snippets by @lover-of-mine, @livingincolorsagain, @mythmagicetc, @redrosydiaz, @hyruling, and @semperama and actually finally have something to share!! YAY! (happy crab!)

Eddie doesn’t panic. It’s not in his nature to, outside the occasional day when he has to clutch at his chest and imagine every limb has become cherry jello. Lately, that’s been happening more often than he’d like, and he knows it’ll never stop because Buck is never coming back. But this isn’t one of those days, and until Eddie has fully grasped the circumstances of his present situation, he’s going to reserve the right to panic. Either it’ll make sense to worry or it won’t, but doing so before he’s good and ready won’t help anyone. With shaking hands, he reaches forward (which turns out to actually be upward) and finds the rough, unfinished grain of wooden planks before he’s even straightened his arms to their full reach. His elbows are still tucked against his sides, and he has to clench his teeth against their sudden urge to chatter. Carefully, he pushes against the wood with both hands, finds it won’t budge, and slides his palms outward. Whatever he’s lying in is at least wider than it is tall, so he has a bit of wiggle room. What he can possibly do with that wiggle room remains to be seen. But it’s not something he has to think about yet, so he shifts his focus to his legs: they’re not bent at the knee, and when he rocks his feet back and forth on his heels, the soles of his dress shoes scrape against a wooden wall. And when he breathes in through his nose, he smells pine, and dirt, and his own stale sweat. What first comes to mind is not a comforting thought. No one but the dead would be comforted upon finding themselves in a wooden coffin, presumably six feet underground. He doesn’t know how long he’s been trapped here. He doesn’t know how much oxygen he has left. He certainly doesn’t know how he came to be buried alive, or who might have done it. But he can guess, even if he wishes he couldn’t. It is, however, comforting to realize that the dead can’t panic, and so he decides to indulge, just this once, both as a reminder to the world and to himself that he’s still alive. That his heart still beats. Perhaps it’s a waste of whatever oxygen he has left in here. Perhaps it’s a waste of a minute he could instead use to figure out a way to get free. But it feels good to inhale, filling his lungs to their full capacity. It feels even better to scream.

It would be so beautiful because what if there IS a "female version" of eddie but that's not what buck wants. He also didn't want the other male version they tried to sell us had "so much in common" with him. Also would be better than seeing eddie being set up again and "forced to perform"..we've been there many times. Unless they're actually redoing s5..

Exactly!! The idea of him being offered a way to be officially part of the family rather than just Eddie’s best friend, but him rejecting it because he realizes what he really wants is Eddie himself! Also yeah, I love that read of Tommy as also being a version of Eddie that he’s allowed to have, but what we see on screen is him barely paying attention to Tommy and just spending all his time with Eddie anyway. No one but Eddie will do!! The show has been showing us this implicitly, but now they need to show us overtly!!!

My contribution to the Gina speculation: she IS Eddie's cousin, and Abuela and Pepa are trying to set her up with Buck. Which is of course perfectly normal, they both love Buck, so of course they want him to date within the family. And there's no reason Buck and Eddie shouldn't be happy about this too! Because Gina is pretty and funny and kind, and if it gets serious Buck could be an official Diaz! They'd be cousins-in-law! Yay!! Except it quickly becomes obvious they're both feeling very not-yay about it. Buck takes her number and sets up a date, but as it gets closer, he gets visibly more and more tense. And Eddie keeps shooting him these weird looks and asking, "Are you excited?" and "Do you know where you're taking her yet?" And then there's a scene of Gina and Eddie having coffee and Gina's asking him to tell her all about Buck, and he gets so wistful and fond when he tells her Buck is the greatest guy she'll ever meet, he has a huge heart, he'll do anything for the people he loves, he's great with kids. And Gina is nodding, but there's this look in her eye, like she's contemplating something.

And then the date rolls around, and Buck keeps trying to talk to her about Eddie, and she's rolling with it, and then, continuing Buck's trend of having horrible luck with first dates, someone at a nearby table collapses from an allergic reaction or something, and Buck goes over to help, and the 118 shows up and Eddie is on shift, so they end up working on the patient together and kind of awkwardly talking about how the date is going at the same time. Then when Eddie leaves, Buck is gazing kind of longingly after him, and when he finally turns back to Gina, she has this thoughtful look on her face. And Buck goes, "I'm so sorry, this kind of thing always happens to me. I hope it didn't ruin your night." And she smiles at him and goes, "No, not at all." So they get through the rest of their dinner, and he drives her home, and when she's about to get out of the car, she turns to him and goes, "Buck, you're really sweet, but i don't know if I'm the Diaz you should be dating." And of course Buck goes, "No, no! Me and Eddie aren't like that! Anyway he's straight." And she smiles and says, "I don't know, maybe you should just talk to him."

The next morning Buck shows up at Eddie's house, and Eddie grills him about the date, and they're both visible uncomfortable, and Christopher is at the kitchen table just kind of watching them. Eventually Buck leaves the room for some reason, and Chris looks at Eddie and goes, "I don't understand why you two don't just date each other."

And then we zoom in on Eddie's face, where you can visibly see the "Oh" moment.

None of yall are the fic police. I DESPISE genai. I think its an insult to art, humanity, and the planet itself. But aint not a single fucking person here qualified to pick apart a strangers fic looking for a gotcha moment to make yourselves feel superior. If you think something is ai you can ask the author (most are proud of the ai use and will just tell you straight up) if they say yes you have your answer and can warn people. If they say no and you dont believe them you block and quietly keep it between you and maybe a close group of friends. Spreading misinformation is DANGEROUS. And NONE of you doing this shit are anywhere near qualified to do it.
