The Last Days of American Crime (2020)
Tumblr media
How did someone named Olivier Megaton direct a boring film? 149 minutes of a bad movie is punishment enough. When the sentence is compounded by unlikeable characters, a half-baked future world, lousy acting, and dialogue that'll make you wince, be merciful; rather than subject us to “The Last Days of American Crime”, just put a bullet in our head.
In the future, the U.S. government is about to activate the American Peace Initiative (API), a signal that will prevent its citizens from committing acts they know are wrong. Professional bank robber Graham Bricke (Édgar Ramírez) is approached by Kevin Cash (Michael Pitt) and his fiancé Shelby Dupree (Anna Brewster). They plan on robbing Detroit’s Federal Reserve Treasury. The heist will take place just as the signal becomes online (the police will be turning in their weapons at this point). When it does, Shelby will sabotage the tower covering their area. Within 30 minutes, they'll be starting a new life of luxury in Canada.
This setup and plot are needlessly complicated. Bricke had a stash of money but it’s been stolen by a crime syndicate. He’s broke and mourning his brother's suicide, except he didn’t kill himself, he was murdered by prison guards. It's useless information. Was the story of a career criminal confronting the API not enough? We needed all this, and a love plot between him and Shelby (they have no chemistry whatsoever) behind Kevin’s back? And Kevin's revenge against his mafia family? And a subplot about a cop (Sharlto Copley as Officer William Sawyer) who doesn’t want to be part of the future police department, but then changes his mind? Too much stuff going on. Within 20 minutes, you’ve stopped caring.
The concept of a society in which crime is "going away” is interesting - if done right. We see protesters in the streets but we’re never told why. We can deduce that it’s because people are worried the signal - which freezes those about to do something wrong - will wreak havoc, combined with the fact that certain police officers will be made them immune to the signal. Why do they need immunity? To go… undercover? That won’t happen ever. In fact, the police will be so useless once the API is active they’re all about to be laid off - I guess traffic lights will never break down and they don’t plan on investigating crimes committed in the past. The freezing thing is what makes this entire premise fall apart. What if a pilot sneaks a candy bar from the snack cart? Is the entire flight going down? Other questions that should be answered aren’t, like what if someone see nothing wrong with driving through a red light at 3:00 am when the streets are deserted. I know I should just “go with it” but API isn’t necessary to the plot, not when you don’t discuss its moral implications. Compare this to Minority Report, for example.
Even if you could get over the excessive running time and the choppy worldbuilding, everything else is a mess. The dialogue sounds like it’s been written by a 13-year-old edgelord who read all of Sin City and thought “I can do better”. Everyone we meet is unlikable, even when screenplay writer Karl Gajdusek introduces a bunch of additional baddies to show us why Shelby is a victim, not a villain. The violence is too brutal to be fun (why is there an attempted rape in this movie?) and Megaton manages to make it all ugly and frequently incomprehensible. Or maybe it only seemed incoherent because I kept almost dozing off.
You can look as hard as you want. You won’t find anything good, creative, worthwhile, or even “ok” in The Last Days of American Crime. It almost hints at interesting ideas but the apparent paradoxes in its world seem more unintentional goofs than commentary. It’s a contender for the worst movie of 2020. (April 27, 2021)

10 LGBTQ Performers in the 1970's
The Stonewall riots were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States. Wikipedia
What followed in the 1970’s was a rising tide of LGBTQ performers that “came out” to express their unique take on music, theater and sexual (transgender) identity. Here are 10 of those performers and a brief look at what they contributed to the movement and to our culture. Click on the image to learn more about the performer.
Tumblr media
JAYNE COUNTY
As rock’s first openly transgender singer, Jayne Rogers (born June 13, 1947), better known by her stage name Jayne County, is an American singer, songwriter, actress and record producer whose career spans five decades. While dressed in female attire from the beginning of her career, County transitioned to female in 1979, becoming Jayne (as the above poster illustrates).
She made her first performing appearances as Wayne County in Wayne County and The Electric Chairs. In 1969 she appeared in Jackie Curtis’ play Femme Fatale. County considered Curtis a major influence on her career and persona and County is widely considered an influence on David Bowie –– County’s Queenage Baby number was the prototype for Bowie’s Rebel Rebel. Even more notable was her play, World – Birth of A Nation, which was set in a hospital and dealt with male castration –– evoking both transgender surgery and her mixed feelings about men, both gay and straight.
After seeing the play, Andy Warhol cast her in his play Pork. She went on to appear in the film The Blank Generation (1976).  Back and forth between New York and London, she settled in Atlanta Georgia. In 2018, County debuted a retrospective show of visual art in the New York City gallery, Participant, Inc.
County’s life and art is considered an inspirational influence on John Cameron Mitchell’s transgender rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
JACKIE CURTIS
“Jackie Curtis is not a drag queen. Jackie is an artist. A pioneer without a frontier,” so said Andy Warhol. Andy was right. Jackie Cutis (1947-1987) was a true original. Long before he became one of the Pop master’s superstars. Curtis distinguished himself by appearing (alternately) as a James Dean-like male and a Jean Harlow-like female in Off-off Broadway plays of his own devise in which he and his friends appeared:
Glamour, Glory And Gold, co-starred Candy Darling, and Robert DeNiroin his first New York stage appearance;
Vain Victory, also starred Darling with Warhol and Jack Smith star Mario Montez;
Amerika Cleopatra featured a thin barely-known Harvey Fierstein;
Femme Fatale, starred Patti Smith, Jayne County and Penny Arcade; and
Heaven Grand In Amber Orbit toplined Holly Woodlawn. These were all makeshift, wildly tossed together affairs having little to do with plot and character but tons to do with exhibitionistic self-expression.
Outside of such Warhol films as Flesh (1968) and Women in Revolt (1972), Jackie’s most notable screen appearance was in Yugoslavia agant-gardist Dusan Makvejev’s W.R.: Mysteries of the Organism – a film about sex researcher Willhelm Reich, creator of the so-called Orgone Box. Makvejev felt Jackie presence in the film added a lot to his view of Reich’s sexual theories.
DIVINE
Born Harris Glenn Milsted in 1945, this life-affirming, overweight transvestite was re-named Divine (after the hero/heroine of Jean Genet’s Our Lady of the Flowers ) by the writer-director John Waters, who discovered her right down the block from where he lived. Through his films Waters turned a lonely overweight kid from Baltimore into one of the biggest (in every sense of the word) of all underground movie stars.
In Waters’ comedies, Pink Flamingoes, Female Trouble, Polyester and Hairspray, Divine redefined what it means to be a movie star. Waters called him The Most Beautiful Woman in The World and if you’ve seen Divine on stage of screen you’ll know why; for like his idol, Elizabeth Taylor, Divine was overwhelmingly sui generis.
While beloved for his films, Divine was a prolific LGBTQ performer on stage and in nightclubs. This above poster memorializes one of them . In this particular show — Vice— Divine appeared with many of the members of the legendary San Francisco drag troupe, The Cockettes.
Sadly, Divine (now a gay, transgender icon) died in 1988 of respiratory problems, days after the opening of his greatest acting success, Hairspray. Those lucky enough to see his club appearances also recall Divine for numbers like this —
CASSELBERRY & DUPREE
Mixing Reggae, Country and Gospel, Casselberry and Dupree are a dynamic lesbian duo who have performed with Harry Belafonte and Whoppi Goldberg, They appeared in the Oscar-nominated Art Is and the Oscar-winning The Times of Harvey Milk. The early 70s was a great time for Sapphic folk music, featured as it was at such venues as Lilith Fair. Jaqué Dupree and J. Casselberry offer a stellar example of it in: CASSELBERRYY AND DUPREE “TWO OF US”
CHARLES PIERCE
Charles Piece 1926-1999 was what might be called a female impersonator (he called himself a Male Actress) who found favor with audiences both straight and gay with his knowing impressions of Bette Davis, Mae West, Tallulah Bankhead and Carol Channing, Such impersonations were quite  traditional for a comic performer of this sort. But as can be seen and heard in this clip of his rendition of Katherine Hepburn, Pierce kept pace with the blossoming LGBTQ movement with many of his zingers evidencing a keen awareness of the difference the out and proud LGBTQ movement had made in  a straight-dominated world.
Headlining a production of Applause was a real tour de force for Piece as this musical version of All About Eve gave him leave to do Bette Davis (star of the original film) and Lauren Bacall (star of the musical remake) at the same time.
JUDITH ANDERSON
Stage and screen star Judith Anderson (1897-1992.) best remembered by the general public for playing the sinister lesbian “Mrs. Danvers” in Hithcock’s Rebecca (1940) and “Ann Treadwell” the socialite who’s keeping Vincent Price’s “Shelby Carpenter” in Laura  The latter was quite low-key in that the character was straight, whereas “Mrs. Danvers” was a full-force lesbian.
Despite the obvious she was married twice. Her first husband was an English professor, Benjamin Harrison Lehmann. They were married in 1937 and divorced  in 1939. Then, in 1946, she married theatrical  producer Luther Greene. They divorced in 1951. Of these marriages Anderson said. “Neither experience was a jolly holiday.”
While Sarah Bernhardt had famously performed  Hamlet in the late 19th century, few actresses have ever tried it. Taking it on at an advanced age, as Anderson did, was quite novel. Doing it when she did, put Anderson in league with the avant-garde gender-benders of the early 70s like Jackie Curtis and Holly Woodlawn.
CRAIG RUSSELL
Craig Russell, born Russell Crag Easie in 1948 in Toronto Canada, this female impersonator carved out a considerable career for himself doing such stars as Bette Davis, Tallulah Bankhead and Mae West — having come to know the last-mentioned personally as he briefly worked as her secretary in Los Angeles. Many LGBTQ performers of this genre did impressions of these stars. But there was an edginess to Russell’s work clearly influenced by the rise of the gay rights movement.
He toured widely, appearing in Las Vegas, Hollywood, San Francisco, Berlin, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Sydney, to the delight of a variety of audiences. But he won a special place in the hearts of the gay ones, as shown in the 1977 comedy-drama Outrageous in which he plays a character largely based on himself.
Interestingly, Russell — who always identified himself as gay — was bisexual. He fathered a daughter, Susan Allison, in 1973, and in 1982 married his closest female friend Lori Jenkins. The marriage lasted right through to the end of Russell’s life in 1990 when he died from AIDS complications.
SYLVESTER
Sylvester James Jr. (1947-1988) was born in Los Angeles, but first came to public attention when he moved to San Francisco and joined the legendary gay hippie performance troupe The Cockettes. A genuinely original singing talent  Sylvester showcased a high, shimmering falsetto and a variety of styles encompassing gospel, disco and cabaret. His look was utterly androgynous. While he sometimes appeared in “drag” he most often sported ensembles suitable to both genders.
Wildly popular in San Francisco he performed solo shows at the city’s opera house. When he died from AIDS complications the entire city mourned, along with everyone else who came to know the man and his music.
STEVEN GROSSMAN
Steve Grossman (1951-1991) a gay singer-songwriter of the early 1970s whose album Caravan Tonight (1974) is distinguished as being the first album dealing with openly gay subject matter released by a major record label, Mercury Records.
He died from AIDS leaving his Joni Mitchell-inflected songs, recorded much in the style of singer-songwriter Cat Stevens, opposed to the then-current glam Bowiesque fashion of openly gay artists. Among them, “Out” is a deeply moving coming-out song directed to his Father mother and brother.

DT Daniel McCullers: 2014 Draft Grade Retrospective
Tumblr media
It’s said a draft class can’t be fully graded until at least three years after the picks are made. That’s why after submitting grades for every Pittsburgh Steelers pick made in 2021, I began going back through and grading previous Steeler draft classes beginning with 2018. Today continues the fifth class in that exercise, with the second of the Steelers’ two sixth-round picks in the 2014 NFL Draft: Daniel McCullers, a defensive tackle out of Tennessee. This exercise follows the six viewpoints (listed below) for examining and re-grading a pick. Each of the first five viewpoints gets examined and assigned a letter grade, before taking that analysis and combining it into a final letter grade. Those five viewpoints comprise much of what goes into the draft grades consumed by so many every year after the draft. Steelers’ Career: What did the player contribute to the team that drafted him? NFL Career: Did the player make the pick look better in hindsight after leaving Pittsburgh? Pick Value: Did the player outperform his draft slot? Did he fail to live up to the pick used on him? Positional Value: Was the player the best player remaining at his specific position in the draft? Other Options: Did any players go during the next round that were better selections? Overall Grade: A final mark to denote whether the selection was an overall positive one, or one better spent elsewhere. Each factor in a retrospective doesn’t apply evenly to every pick made; consider the grades weighted. For example, to return a high grade in pick value, a first-round pick should have a long and impactful career, while a later-round pick needs only a couple seasons as a back-up or modest contributor to be worth the selection used on him. Some factors are universal, though. Whether picked first overall or 259th, there will always be other options on the board to compare the player to, and steals and reaches can come from any place in the draft. Round 6, Pick 39: Daniel McCullers, DT, Tennessee STEELERS CAREER: C The Pittsburgh Steelers owned the final selection in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Two of the team’s prior three selections in the fifth and sixth rounds had come on defense as depth additions, but it was McCullers who ended up earning a main roster spot and building a career on the Steelers’ defense. That career would span six seasons with the franchise, as the hulking 6’7”, 352-pound defensive tackle gave the Steelers someone who could fill Casey Hampton’s nose tackle role on an as-needed basis. His size and performance kept him around despite continuous competition for a roster spot: Pittsburgh drafted a defensive tackle in four of the five subsequent drafts, but none moved Big Dan off a roster spot. While his career lasted longer than his rookie contract, McCullers was never a main player for the team. Beginning with a rookie season of nine games with one start and 63 snaps played, McCullers had only two tackles. He was unable to beat out Steve McClendon and then Javon Hargrave for starts but kept control of the backup job much of his career, playing between 12-16 games and 105-182 snaps four of his next five seasons. McCullers peaked in 2016, one of his two seasons playing a full 16 games. That regular season over a career-high 182 snaps, McCullers had 17 tackles, two for a loss, and five quarterback hits. He also played a career-high 74 snaps on special teams. Over six seasons and 73 regular season contests in Pittsburgh, McCullers had 41 tackles, four for a loss, and nine quarterback hits as a backup nose tackle. NFL CAREER: D- McCullers’ career with the Steelers did not end by the team’s choice. Even when Isaiah Buggs, Carlos Davis, and Chris Wormley combined to force McCullers off the active roster in 2020, the Steelers retained him on their practice squad at the start of the season. He stayed there for the early part of the year, until the Chicago Bears poached him after the opening weeks. McCullers spent the rest of the season bouncing between the Bears’ active roster and practice squad. He appeared in three total games for Chicago, playing 86 snaps and making three tackles. The Bears did not retain him after the season, and McCullers remains a free agent. His most recent contact with the league was a workout with the Baltimore Ravens two months ago. PICK VALUE: B McCullers was the final player taken before the seventh round. The 215th overall pick failing to make the main roster wouldn’t surprise anybody as a rookie or in subsequent seasons. Instead McCullers not only made the team, but out-performed players the Steelers brought in to remain one of the team’s top backup options at defensive tackle for over a half-decade. That’s pretty strong play for a pick range where only a select few make it through the entirety of their rookie contracts. McCullers never came close to starting, but he never needed to. Pittsburgh needed a player who could step in and be a massive nose tackle, and McCullers did that for six seasons. POSITIONAL VALUE: D+ If a single position had a lot of value left for the final round in 2014 (plus the last pick before the final round), it was defensive tackle. McCullers has company among his position group among players taken so late, as three of the other seven players with the most games played from so late a draft slot are fellow defensive tackles. Shamar Stephen (220th, Minnesota) and Shelby Harris (235th, Oakland) are the two with the most high-profile careers to date. Each began as a backup who didn’t get on the field consistently over their first few seasons. Stephen broke into the lineup first, starting every game for Minnesota in 2016 with a career-high 39 tackles. He lost his starting spot and spent a year in Seattle, but quickly returned to the Vikings in 2019 and started all but one game for them the last two years. Stephen is now in Denver, and fighting for a spot alongside or backing up the current top defensive tackle from the last round of 2014: Shelby Harris. Selected 235th by Oakland, Harris never made an impact with the Raiders and spent the entire 2016 season without a home on an active roster. The Broncos rescued Harris, and paved the way for a 5.5-sack breakout as a backup on the team’s line in 2017. After failing to start a game in 2018, Harris earned a full-time starting spot in 2019, starting all 27 games he has played the last two seasons. Denver just signed him to a three-year, $27 million contract to stay at that position. Trailing behind those two is Beau Allen, drafted 224th by Philadelphia. Allen has been a backup every season to date, like McCullers, but with over 340 snaps in four of his six seasons. Not evert defensive tackle taken so late panned out, but most of them did. Even as a successful pick so late, Pittsburgh had a lot of better options left in a small pool when they selected McCullers. OTHER OPTIONS: C+ Exactly four players taken over the next 32 picks after McCullers have appeared in more NFL games than he has. They’re also four of the only players who could be argued as better options in retrospect. The earliest of names is T.J. Carrie, making yet another appearance in these retrospectives as a comparison to Steeler picks. The corner selected 219th overall by Oakland is still defending in the NFL, now with Indianapolis, and has over 50 starts and an interception in all but one season. One pick after Carrie went Stephen to Minnesota, and four picks later Beau Allen went to Philadelphia. All the way down at 246th overall is Charles Leno Jr., who like Carrie has topped 100 career games. Leno is the only seventh-rounder from this class to make a Pro Bowl, and has started all 16 games the last five seasons. Two players played less games than McCullers, but are two of the best who went on all of Day 3 in 2014. One is Harris, and the other is Andre Hal, who began the seventh round at 216th overall to Houston. Hal started three years as the Texans’ safety and had between 2-4 interceptions each of his final four years. Hal walked away from the game after his fifth season in 2018. Pittsburgh shouldn’t be unhappy with its selection, but there were names that offered an even higher ceiling, most notably McCullers’ fellow DTs, Leno, and Hal. OVERALL GRADE: B- It’s all about value this late in the draft, and finding players out of a crowded group of eventual wash-outs that are the ones good enough to stick in the NFL and contribute in some capacity. Pittsburgh found that in McCullers, a defensive tackle who stuck around longer on the team’s roster than all but one of his fellow 2014 picks (not counting Ryan Shazier). Not only that, McCullers was around longer than all but one pick in 2015’s class (Bud Dupree), and the entirety of the 2016 class. His contributions were small, never reaching 200 snaps in a season, but there’s a reason McCullers kept winning the backup spot year after year. He was what the Steelers needed in certain situations in the center of the line, and he played his part well.
