The first episode of the Star Wars inspired cartoon Ewoks premiered on September 7, 1985. The series, along with the similarly Star Wars inspired Droids, was one of the most expensively produced cartoons in the 1980's. The events of the series took place before their introduction in Star Wars Episode VI Return of the Jedi. While the main character Wicket was played by Warwick Davis in ROTJ, he was voiced by Jim Henshaw (and Denny Delk in the second season) in the cartoon. The first episode featured the Tulga Witch Morga (Jackie Burroughs) plans to burn down the forest on the Endor moon. The episode featured other RTOJ characters Chief Chirpa (movie Jane Busby/ cartoon George Buza/Rick Cimino), Teebo (movie Jack Purvis/ cartoon Eric Peterson/James Cranna) and Logray (movie Mike Edmonds /cartoon Douglas Chamberlain). This is my favorite video essay about kid's TV. It starts dark and stays dark until the last few chapters when the YouTuber (PaperWill) talk about how they were planning to scrap the whole video & script because it was too dark and there didn't seem to be a silver lining. Then he found the story about how Fred Rodgers (yes, that Mr.Rodgers) ended up being the reason PBS got to keep being government funded.

PaperWill is a great story teller and I encourage everyone to watch the video. It's long, but it's for a good reason. I would recommend it based on the end of the video alone. This dumbass literally made me cry. I did not need to sob at 5 in the god damn morning, but here we are.

Conclusion: Watch the video. I promise you'll learn something and it has a happy ending and treats its darker material with respect & care. Put it in your Watch Later if you have to. It's SUCH a good video ngl

222 - Away We Go

After winning Best Picture and Best Director for his zeitgeist-seizing debut feature American Beauty, Sam Mendes instantly became a director who generate awards chatter no matter the project. In 2009, he took a noticeable tonal downshift with Away We Go, a minor key comedy about a young pregnant couple on a road trip to decide where they want to grow their roots. Despite praise for Maya Rudolph’s performance as a soon-to-be mother still grieving the untimely death of her parents and John Krasinski opposite her as her jokester partner, the film didn’t succeed as summer counter-programming and mostly forgotten in the season to come.

This episode, we talk about the harsh reviews that found the film more judgmental than reflective and Rudolph’s understated and absorbing performance. We also talk about Alexi Murdoch’s soundtrack, possibly semi-autobiographical screenwriter marrieds Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, and the film’s bursting ensemble of fantastic character actors from Melanie Lynskey, Allison Janney, and Maggie Gyllenhaal.

William Tyler & The Impossible Truth — Secret Stratosphere (Merge)

Secret Stratosphere by William Tyler & The Impossible Truth

It’s been a while since William Tyler released a full-length album of his own music, the most recent being Goes West, his 2019 foray into soft rock. A movie soundtrack, an ep , and a fantastic collaboration with Marisa Anderson have followed, all brimming with interesting ideas, and he’s presumably been in the studio cooking up something new. In the meantime, he has released a live recording from 2021. With Secret Stratosphere, Tyler returns to the classic rock sound of 2014’s Lost Colony ep — two of the three songs on which appear here — with a line-up that includes a conventional rhythm section and Luke Schneider on pedal steel.

There is a dad rock vibe to the proceedings (Tyler even name-checks Blue Oyster Cult and Rusted Root), from the accomplished soloing to the power chord crunch. Generally, the versions of Tyler’s compositions here don’t vary a whole lot from the studio versions apart from being fully electric and stripped down, though the lead-off track trades the AOR stylings of one of the better tunes on Goes West (the only one in the present set) for a proggy veneer. A stylistic pillar of post-rock, the slowdown before the big climax, is especially well-represented. 

Secret Stratosphere doesn’t overlap with previous live sets Elvis Was a Capricorn (2012) or Live at Third Man Records (2016) but does draw on most of Tyler’s releases. It also includes one new tune (apart from a new ending grafted onto “Highway Anxiety” dubbed “Radioactivity”), “Area Code 601,” which Tyler introduces as a “Hawkwind Meets Charlie Daniels band number.” However, nothing quite so interesting develops; instead, heavy generic riffs create the impression that Dave Grohl may be waiting in the wings to launch into an anthemic chorus. 

The recording has a definite live feel; Tyler talks up the crowd, which, though sounding a bit thin, responds enthusiastically, and the drums are way up front in the mix while the bass is more felt than heard. Schneider’s steel occasionally shines, as on the slowdowns before the big climaxes of “Whole New Dude” and “Gone Clear,” but more often it is in the background, filling the space often covered by keyboards. 

Perhaps it is best to view Secret Stratosphere through the lens of the pandemic. Recorded in May 2021 (in Huntsville, Alabama), amid the first wave of vaccinations and the relaxing of many public health restrictions, the audience must have been thrilled to be back in a brew pub listening to live music, and Tyler sounds happy to be back in front of a crowd. In that context, the bar-band ethos makes perfect sense; this is music that would sound best after the third beer. I hope, though, that Tyler is preparing to offer up some fresh, forward-looking music soon.

Republicans for Kamala is taking off and includes some high profile former office holders and staffers. This is more than just the usual handful of mid level and obscure officials.

At least three former governors including Jim Edgar of Illinois (1991-1999) have publicly announced their support for the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris.

Nine days into her 2024 candidacy, Vice President Kamala Harris picked a couple of notable Republican endorsements: Former Georgia Lt. Gov. Geoff Duncan threw his support behind the Democrat fairly quickly, and John Giles, the mayor of Mesa, Arizona’s third-largest city, endorsed her soon after. Given the state of the cotemporary GOP, it’s not easy for any Democratic candidate to pick up cross-party backing, so this represented a decent start. But hanging overhead was an obvious question: Would other Republicans soon follow? The question received a rather emphatic answer over the weekend. NBC News reported: >> The Harris campaign on Sunday unveiled more than two dozen endorsements from Republicans, including former governors, members of Congress and Trump administration officials. Many of the endorsements came from politicians who were already openly critical of former President Donald Trump, including former Republican Gov. Bill Weld of Massachusetts; former Rep. Nickelodeon owes the "fans" an apology...

I'm only saying this because apparently it's the 45th anniversary and Nickelodeon has been hiding some sneaky crap that they still haven't addressed, even after the documentary has come out. Dirty Dan gave a fake apology that sounded scripted, but that's not what we want. We want Nickelodeon, a well known CHILDREN'S network, to apologize for the most perverted, fetishy shows in existence, and also putting child actors at risk for over 20 years! Dirty Dan Schneider was working for that network since the 90s and he came out with a fake apology right after the documentary came out. We just want Dan Schneider to be IN PRISON, with John Kricfalusi, Chris Savino, James Charles, and Colleen Ballinger.

Nickelodeon needs to apologize by having a restriction against hiring children for live action shows, and also make a public announcement and apologize to all the kids who were involved in the shows, and also the fans. Apologize for putting the most fetishy, disgusting content in shows for a children's network, and also get rid of everything that isn't suitable. Not just the Dirty Dan shows, but also some of the cartoons (Like Ren & Stimpy and Loud House) should be banned as well. It's sickening that Nickelodeon even allowed that stuff in the first place. I think the Dan Schneider stuff is the worst, though. Also, inform people that you will no longer hire minors for live action shows, if you make any at all. I think Nickelodeon should have a restriction against being allowed to make live action shows after all they've done. Last of all, there are other changes that need to be made! Now that the perverted stuff is gone, it's time to bring back the shows that were more suitable for kids.

Early SpongeBob episodes were amazing, but there's others I hope Nickelodoen should bring back too;

CatDog (even though it had some subtle dirty jokes, and some episodes got a bit too heavy, it had some good messages. It was also ahead of its time)

Doug (It was made by Jim Jinkins, same guy who worked on Pinky Dinky Do so of course it's family friendly)

Rugrats (Some things didn't age well, but at least it was better than Dirty Dan's stuff)

Robot & Monster (It was weird at times but mostly family friendly)

Harvey Beaks (This show was literally so cute and the episode I watched had a decent mesage)

The Wild Thornberries (Extremely ahead of its time, I heard form someone on YouTube that they did a better job teaching about other cultures than Disney did).

Hey Arnold (I think some episodes get a bit too heavy, and the show can sometimes be straight up sad, but it's relatable and teaches serious issues)

Invader Zim (I know this one was dark and not the best for kids, but at least it's entertaining and not fetishy)

SpongeBob Squarepants, seasons 1 and 2 (it was way more family friendly back then)

So yeah, Nickelodeon! That's only 8 shows listed! You should be able to play them if you remove the Loud house, Ren & Stimpy, and EVERYTHING that has Dan Schneider's name credited. And like I said, NO MORE LIVE ACTION SHOWS PLEASE!

an unexpected ask... I'm not normally down for dumping on people outside of politics. There are plenty of actors I don't like, or those I won't watch in movies, primarily as a result of heir actions off screen... Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, Rob Schneider, Jim Caviezel... I don't want to ever see those guys in a movie; if their part of the cast I'll always pass.

But the actor I hate the most is easily John Wayne. That guy sucked six ways to the Sunday. Racist, chauvinist, homophobic and all around asshole... the fucker tried to punch out Sacheen Littlefeather. Just as bad, he dodged the draft for World War II and then made a career playing war heroes. Also he couldn't act for shit. Always played the same guy in every movie.
