I would not really call Candy Claws shoegaze. Many of the reviews mentioned this - yes the vocals sound shoegazy, but the music isn't anywhere close.
"Ceres & Calypso in the Deep Time was the 4th album from this Fort Collins, Colorado band. Members of the band later formed Sound of Ceres (Joyful Noise Recordings) with members of The Apples in Stereo and The Drums.
This album is a concept album developed with the help of poet Jenn Morea. The album tells the story of a white seal named Ceres and a little girl named Calypso traveling through the Mesozoic Era. The music does give one the sense of a wondrous world and story. To me the music does recall the work of any number of Elefant 6 bands (i.e. Of Montreal or The Apples in Stereo) and MGMT.
This is a 10-year anniversary release and comes with a bonus CD. It is being reissued by the original label - Twosyllable Records.

“Still, there's something to be said
For company in bed this time of morning
See? I knew we'd agree
How can anyone deny
The benefits of lying with your friend
We'll try it again,”

Reviews of The Apples in Stereo’s “Her Wallpaper Reverie” and Music Tapes’ “1st Imaginary Symphony For Nomad”, Reno Gazette Journal, 6 August 1999
transcript:
The Apples in Stereo “Her Wallpaper Reverie” (EP) SpinArt Records ***1/2
Music Tapes “1st Imaginary Symphony For Nomad” Merge Records ***
Here are the latest two releases from the Elephant 6 Collective, an inventive loosely tied troupe of musicians who are re-writing the rules of psychedelic pop. These two records are good examples of how far these groups are pushing the envelope instead of just revisiting Lucy in the Sky for some quick bucks.
The Apples in Stereo contribute more brilliant pop, although it’s a departure from their previous work. It’s like a microcosmic version of the Beatles’ “White Album.” Songs like “The Shiney Sea” and “Strawberryfire” are slower and more deliberate than the band’s peppier work, and the album is strewn with odd electronic blips and bloops linking the songs (to be fair, most of these are irritating). Still, fans of the Apples’ hook-happy tunes will love “Ruby,” “Questions and Answers” and the great tune “Y2K,” which perfectly encapsulates the stupidity of millennial fear.
The Music Tapes features members of Neutral Milk Hotel, the most brilliant Elephant 6 group. But, the Tapes’ debut is very different from the Hotel’s skewered folk-pop: “Nomad” is kind of like those odd cassette tapes children make when they have big imaginations but limited talent, and I mean that in a good way. It’s a fun, challenging record to dive into, with great pop songs like “Aliens” and “What the Single Made the Needle Sing” sharing space with odd skits, surface noise, narration and even strategically placed dead silence. It’s not the easiest listen in the world, but it is certainly distinctive and creative.

I'm very proud of this pictures, really. Today was one of the warmest days in this year in my view. I went to the Czech Republic with my family to meet my uncle, but all time I was just trying to being alive, and I didn't take any pictures. Next I went to my aunt's home for a coffee, and I came back. I've just returned home because I went to a small walk alone with my headphones, 'cause now it's perfect weather. I'll just read a book to the end, brew chamomile and fall asleep probably, 'cause I'm tired so much

I Was A King (Egersund, Norway) has been a staple for me for over 15 years. I remember finding their s/t LP in the markdown bin at Rasputin in Berkeley. They have consistently put out great pop influenced by the likes of Teenage Fanclub, The Apples in Stereo, and Guided By Voices for nearly 20 years.
They have influenced bands like Tony Molina and The Lost Ones. And members have joined other amazing projects like The No Ones and Colored Light.
"Isle of Yours" is an album I've always wanted. I contacted Frode Strømstad a while back asking if there were any extra copies he'd be willing to sell and the answer came back, sold out. Copies on Discogs are there, but expensive.
So, for now, let's just be content to hear one of their finest works in digital form. And if you haven't really gotten into the band yet, let this be the gateway to further exploration to one of Norway's greatest exports.
