I am I the asshole for telling someone what they were doing was "mean spirited and cruel"?

(submitted this a while back but was never posted - don't know if tumblr ate it or if it broke a rule, but i'm sorry if its the latter)

My complex has a facebook page where residents can post questions or concerns to other residents. One day a woman posted asking if we could move the food bowls where people feed the feral cat colony that lives near us because when she walks her dogs they always lunge at the cats; she had just had surgery and it hurt when they pulled on the leash. Someone responded saying they had moved the bowls down and that seemed like that.

Two days later she posted again saying that our "kind and caring neighbor" (her) had called someone to come pick up the cats. From another comment on the post it seemed like she had talked to someone IRL who was rude and basically told her "I've been feeding the cats for 10 years fuck off" and then called animal control immediately after that.

This felt really petty to me, and I posted saying that calling animal control on the cats was "mean spirited and cruel". I explained that almost all feral cats taken in are put down, and that she was making a decision about the community's cats without consulting the community. I added that I was sorry she had been hurting since her surgery, but that there were other steps she should have taken before this.

She responded that I needed to have more compassion for her as she herself was very compassionate and caring person. To which I responded that she should then extend that compassion to these cats that had never hurt anyone. (Seriously, they just chill around our complex and eat rats – they’ve never scratched or bit any person or animal)

She responded that they hurt her “fur babies” everyday because they make her dogs pull at their leashes and choke themselves. She then went on a rant about how she didn’t understand why people weren’t respecting her anger and that since she lived here she had a right to want the cats gone. She also mentioned that calling her “mean spirited and cruel” had racial connotations and that I wouldn’t call a white person that.

Important context, I am a white woman – up until this point I had not realized that she was a black woman as this argument was in a facebook group and the pictures were small. But it is very possible this is something I saw and internalized without consciously recognizing it.

I was really thrown by this, and just replied yes, I would and that I’m sorry it hurt to hear, but that is what her actions were. (Which, yeah, nobody ever not in the racist category uses the ‘I’d say that to anyone!’ excuse, but I truly didn’t know what to say). She continued to respond to my comment saying how I was a pitiful person if I’d really call anyone that, and that I hadn’t addressed any of her other points.

More people where commenting at the same time on this post, and while she responded to all of them my “mean spirited and cruel” comment apparently really got her because she kept bringing it up in arguments with other people. She really felt that people were being unjustifiably angry and mean to her for something she thought she had a right to do.

It also came out that she had apparently posted complaining about the cats the day before but it had gotten so out of hand the post was deleted before I could see it. She had also gotten into several arguments IRL with people feeding the cats. This explains why she felt so ganged up on I suppose – though none of this I knew before replying.

The next day she specifically made a new post calling out racists in our community and tagged me and few other people (even other POC) who had disagreed with her about the cats. I didn’t respond, but fairly quickly that and the post from before were deleted.

I’ve been really trying to think about if my internalized racism did unknowingly influence my actions, but I honestly keep coming back to the fact that I think I would have said the same to anyone who tried to get a cat colony killed because her dogs try to attack them.

Also for those curious – the cat colony is still here! It turns out removing a cat colony from their home is actually considered animal cruelty and is illegal in this state

Nico: Also I can and have talked to a lot of our mortal siblings who frequently warned me about this exact scenario and were extremely relieved that neither of you would be living at camp together long-term, so your thoughts and opinions mean nothing to me right now.

Percy: I just want to say that I believe you, and I would never dismiss you or curse you out like she did just now. I think that was very rude of her, and she should be the one who stays tied up, while I am let go.

I had to hold back a scream when the mummy dust solo started, I love the ghoulettes..

I was so sad when copia was like: "no, no, no encore." Bc I really wanted to hear kiss the go-goat (it was one of my favorites when I first got into ghost)

THEN RAIN SPOKE. IM SORRY??!?!

Then I said over to my friends something like: "Yeah, i need them to do an encore.. NEED to hear, kiss the go-goat live, or I will sob." And of course, THE INTRO TO KISS THE GO-GOAT STARTED. Me and my friends and I just lit up with joy, trying not to cry from what I had just said and what happened.

I remember Square Hammer and the midair splits. The whole theater gasped at the same time. At that point, I was in tears for the 273673rd time. I saw copia do the pose he was meant to, and cried even more.

He went to the hot-air balloon, and everyone was silent. We all saw him wake up, and then sister on the floor.

I remember my friend (clueless one) commenting about copias dramatic crying over sisters' bodies. "Oh yeah, that guy knows how to act!" Joking in a good way, I laughed through my tears.

I don't remember when, but when Copia talked about taint tickling, she audibly, but quietly gasped and whispered something as I just nodded.

MARY ON A CROSS WAS BEAUTIFUL. THERE IS NO DENYING THE SCOOBY-DOO CHASE MUSIC NOW!!

It felt like you were there in the audience, like you were right there in the pit. I'm so glad that this movie is making so much in box offices. It was like an unholy experience I will never forget.

"Sukuna, No," Yuji yelled at the spirit, frustration and helplessness gnawing at him.

"Well, don't you just look divinely delicious," Sukuna cooed, his gaze unabashedly roaming over her form with a dangerous smirk playing on his lips.

"Itadori? What the fuck. Why do you look like that? I mean, you weren't so good-looking before but now~" She teased, her voice flowing smoothly. "Where did that second set of eyes come from? And those tattoos~ God, you're kinda hot now~" Her giggles were a mix of amusement and flirtation.

The girl's confidence and flirtatious banter intrigued Sukuna. There was something different about her, an energy that suggested she was more than just an ordinary human. She clearly held significance to the boy whose body Sukuna currently inhabited. He felt a tug of curiosity, a desire to learn more about her.

"Sweetheart~" a voice interrupted.

Turning the corner, Mahito spotted the young girl he had seen before, this time with the familiar boy in tow.

"Ahh~ I hope I'm not interrupting a little rendezvous here. I didn't expect you two to be getting along so well," Mahito's laughter was grating, his stride confident as he approached and casually draped an arm over the girl's shoulders.

"I don't know. Something about him today doesn't scream annoying Idatori. I don't feel the urge to disfigure him like usual," she smirked, her eyes glinting with a hint of mischief.

"Mmm, well darling, I don't have much control over his body left, so sadly, I must bid you adieu. But~ I'll be seeing you again," Sukuna's departure left her puzzled, her brows furrowing in confusion.

"Why are you acting so weird, Itadori?" she questioned, her expression turning skeptical.

"Oh, Sweetie. I'm not Itadori. How rude of me. I'll introduce myself properly. I'm Ryomen Sukuna," he smirked flirtatiously at her, his eyes briefly flickering to Mahito's arm still resting on her shoulders.

Mahito froze, his eyes widening in realization. This was no ordinary encounter. THE Ryomen Sukuna had taken an interest in his student. He would need to report this to Geto immediately.

The girl's confusion persisted. "Who?" she asked innocently, earning a sharp smack from Mahito. Nervously giggling, he turned her around, eager to avoid any further interaction that could anger Sukuna.

"Wait—Mahito—stop," she protested, twisting back to glance at the boy who had once been her nemesis. Perhaps this 'Sukuna' was a trick Itadori was playing on her. Or maybe not? Curiosity getting the better of her, she waved uncertainly.

Sukuna smirked, watching her wave as Mahito led her away. His possessive instincts flared, a surge of jealousy sparking within him. The cursed spirit's arm resting on the girl's shoulder seemed an offense that demanded retribution. He couldn't let anyone lay claim to what piqued his interest.

As she disappeared from view, Sukuna's smirk widened into a feral grin. His mind already plotting how he would deal with the interruption, and how he might soon have this intriguing girl all to himself.

Ophelia sat wide-eyed, absorbing the weight of Mahito's revelation about Ryomen Sukuna.

"And by the way Mahito said he was talking to you, he has already obviously taken an interest in you. This is very good for us, Ophelia," Geto explained calmly, his demeanor serious and calculated.

She nodded quietly, her mind racing with thoughts about the notorious sorcerer now intertwined with her fate.

"So, I am going to need you to be cooperative about this situation. Ok?" Geto's tone brooked no argument as he clasped his hands together. "Alright now. We need to get you in front of him again." His hand rested thoughtfully on his chin, contemplating their next move.

"But what if it's Itadori again? I won't give him another chance to control me. He's getting stronger—so am I, but still..." Ophelia voiced her concern, her apprehension palpable.

"Oh, don't worry. We won't let that happen, and I'm sure Sukuna won't either," Geto reassured her, a glimmer of confidence in his eyes. "We'll devise a plan to ensure your safety. Sukuna's interest could be advantageous for us, but only if we approach it strategically."

As they discussed their strategy, plotting their next encounter with the enigmatic Ryomen Sukuna, Ophelia couldn't shake the mix of fear and curiosity that now defined her perception of the powerful figure who had taken an interest in her. She knew the stakes were high, but she also understood that this moment could define her path in ways she hadn't imagined before.

Herbert was gone all of two minutes.

He left Dan with their bags while he went inside in search of someone who could tell them what to do now that their bus had been delayed. His German was rusty but he had a hell of a lot easier time than Dan loudly repeating himself in English, using more rudimentary words with every attempt to get the non-English speaking Swiss workers to understand him. Their travels through Bern were proving to be more working and less holiday.

Herbert paced back to the terminal, their new itinerary scribbled down in his notebook. He glanced up from the page and nearly got run over by a family trailing bulbous suitcases. He barely noticed; he was too busy seething at the sight of a woman chatting animatedly with Dan, smiling up at him and touching his arm. Long blonde hair spilled out from beneath her pageboy hat, which she kept twirling around her finger as she laughed at whatever Dan was saying.

Dan looked slightly bewildered, no doubt having trouble following her broken English. As Herbert stomped closer, he could make out the tail end of her sentence.

"-so cool. I love America." She accentuated love with a squeeze to Dan's bicep, and Herbert nearly chewed right through his tongue.

"Oh, yeah, it's great," Dan replied, scratching at the back of his neck but still keeping his smile in place. "This is my first time outside of America."

Gretel or Heidi or whatever the fuck her name was, grinned at Dan. "You come with me? I can show der Schweiz you-"

"Why are you bothering him?" Herbert barked at her in German, finally slipping up to Dan's side and into her field of vision. "Go find some other tourist to proposition."

She blinked in surprise at his sudden appearance, then frowned as she swept her gaze over him. Doubtless, she was trying to piece his non-European appearance with his crisp German.

"And who are you?" she asked rudely, quirking an eyebrow at him.

Herbert bared his teeth in a feral grin and hugged Dan's arm, tugging him close to his side. "I'm his client. He's a hooker I'm paying to fuck and follow me around. So, unless you've got a few spare thousand Euros, I'd back off."

All the haughty snark instantly vanished from her face, leaving behind only mortification. She slowly backed away, eyes darting between the two of them, before she murmured an apology, turned tail and ran, quickly disappearing into the crowd. Herbert smiled after her, keeping his grip on Dan's arm, satisfaction filling him like a glass of warm milk.

"What just happened?" Dan asked, head whipping back and forth between Herbert and the shadow of the girl. He narrowed his eyes down at Herbert. "What did you say to her? She was just being friendly."

"I didn't say anything," Herbert replied sweetly, nuzzling his cheek into Dan's shoulder. "I just told her we were very busy."

Dan sighed and rubbed at his eyes. "I hate not being able to understand everything. You could be saying anything. Telling people I'm a drug dealer or something."

"I would never do something like that," Herbert said solemnly before releasing Dan's arm and squatting down to grab his suitcase. He started off in the direction of their terminal and nodded for Dan to follow. "Now, come on. We've got a bus to catch."

"As soon as we get to the apartment, I'm taking a nap," Dan groaned as he paced after Herbert, his roller suitcase sliding along the linoleum floor.

Okay so first off, everyone is entitled to there own opinions, and if you disagree with me that’s fine.

Second this rant has trigger warnings for SA 

I just finished reading ACOSF and it made me go a bit feral. I’ve always hated Rhysand and this book just made it so clear to me that he is abusive and controlling. I get that he’s is hot and also, no wait, being hot is his only positive trait. It just felt so wrong that a so called feminist told us that Rhysand’s SA of Feyre was ok because ‘he had to’ or ‘he felt really bad about it’. Obviously SA is never for the right reasons. Anyway back to ACOSF. 

So first and foremost, the villianising of Nesta. As someone who really struggles with mental health, I loved and empathised with Nesta. But to watch her be insulted, used and taken advantage of by her so called family was really upsetting to me. I acknowledge that Nesta was rude, and at times cruel, but that didn’t mean she deserved what she got in ACOSF. People are really out there saying the house of wind wasn’t a prison when Feyre threatened to have Nesta TIED UP AND DRAGGED there, after she had just been kidnapped and traumatised by Hybern. 

Nesta was slut shamed in ACOSF. I know that her having sex was a coping mechanism, but having her family constantly making fun of her for it rather than really helping just kind of made me uncomfortable. Like it is mentioned in the books that after their first battle all of the bat boys had a six month sized gap in their memory where they were supposedly drinking and sleeping around. The double standards are INSANE. 

Cassian was also abusive towards Nesta in ACOSF. Yes she was rude to him, but he constantly pushed her boundaries by calling her names she said she was uncomfortable with, asking for consent in a very questionable way, and having sex with her when he knew it was unhealthy/a coping mechanism for her. When Nesta was finally vulnerable with him, he threw it in her face, asking why he had been ‘shackled to her’. Then she gave up everything just to be able to carry his child and was finally accepted, and then went to happily live in the house that she could only leave if Cassian permitted, like WHAT.

Also I think that a very important scene to bring to light is the scene where Nesta falls down the stairs. It’s just casually mentioned that Azriel thought Cassian could have pushed Nesta down the stairs, in this book. For someone who cared so much about how feminist and supportive the bat boys are, SJM was just like ‘yeah I mean Azriel thought Cassian could have pushed Nesta down the stairs but he didn’t so it’s fine.

Also, I have seen this mentioned a lot but when Tamlin locked Feyre in a house, he was being controlling, and when Rhys locked Nesta in a house and then literally threatened to KILL her, he is just protecting Feyre. I think with the locking in the house thing, for both Tamlin and Rhys, in the best case scenario it was a misguided attempt to protect Feyre, and in the worst case, a power play to control vulnerable women. Although Rhys claimed he was ‘helping Nesta heal’ it was mentioned that he smirked as she was told everything, like he was enjoying her discomfort. Overall I think that this book felt with themes of trauma and abuse very poorly, but I wouldn’t expect anything more from Sarah. It was basically faerie porn with very bad plot.

Anyway please correct me if any of this is wrong, as I can’t bring myself to re read the acotar series

okay this concept is mildly hilarious to me. but lambert ends up finding young renfri on the run from her stepmother and stregobor, and basically a feral little stray. she tries to steal his horse from the stables at an inn one night and he’s like I think the Fuck not. so renfri tries the big eyes “please mr I have nothing” and lambert is like wow cool, not my problem! begone little rat.

so anyway this kicks off renfri following him around and actively trying to rob his ass out of spite. he’s super annoyed and keeps telling her she’s lucky he doesn’t beat up kids, and she’s meanwhile like yeah i am going to take this assholes shit to sell. eventually she does actually manage to snatch some of his shit - he thought he’d finally gotten rid of the little brat, and while he was on a contract she DID actually do it. so he’s tracking her down like “right, going to make an exception, this kid is a fucking ASS” and it works out because miss renfri has drawn a little bit too much attention following a Witcher and she’s been hunted down by one of stregobors apprentices.

lambert gets about 5 mins into hearing the explanation about why dissecting little girls is totally cool actually before he loses it and the idiot loses his head. so now lambert is pissed off and he HAD wanted to teach this little shit a lesson but now she’s clearly terrified and shaking and okay he will watch her back for ONE night out here and then she’s on her own okay.

so lambert basically ends up with a child he can’t help but actually like. she’s vicious and she’s mouthy and rude and very determined to live (it does NOT remind him of anyone okay!!)

so now they’re staying moving because he doesn’t really know how big this is, and how many people are actually after this kid. and he thinks about taking her to kaer morhen, even if just for the winter, and he thinks about her teary terrified face when he’d found her, and he thinks about her in kaer morhen, and is completely rational about it of course - lambert decides he can’t take her there and he doesn’t want them to know about her. he doesn’t want their advice about children and they don’t know anything and he doesn’t want them giving renfri any terrible ideas about life.

so lambert isn’t returning home for a few winters and everyone is shattered because they think he’s dead. until there’s a rumour about a mouthy little bitch of a Witcher that literally cannot be anyone else, and one of his siblings hunts him down and is like …what the fuck is that? and lambert is immediately a little bit too defensive, too fierce about it all.

basically, baby boy has to face his trauma and they all have to ACTUALLY talk and clear the air. renfri is like woah mama mia you guys are way more messed up than me, comforting. lambert is actually doing pretty well at the parenting/mentoring thing and appears to be actually be trying to be a somewhat good example (it’s the cycle of healing and being better bitch)

Wanning & Shen Yurong's ending being so surprisingly tender in the end???? God her story was so horrible and her entire life twisted her into a husk of a woman... I actually shed a tear at her death scene

&& Shen Yurong's haunted doggedness in pursuing his goals to the end and how he's gaslit himself into thinking that this is all for the greater good... Shen Yurong is one of the more complex villains out there for sure, and the acting was pitch perfect. Of course he chooses to commit suicide because at the end of it all he's just a fucking coward & has been this entire time!!!

Another thing. Kinda dumb that whoever holds the fish talisman automatically gets the army?? Lmao??? They are like rip even though this guy is evil we gotta follow him because he's holding that damn fish. The CATHARSIS OF A LI FINALLY GETTING TO SHOOT THE DAMN MAN THOUGH!!!!!

Xiao Heng's grandfather is the literal GOAT lmao he was so endearing & same with Xue Zhao LOL calling Xiao Heng his brother in law. Also, kind of rude of them to make Jingrui and Liu Xu get married OFF SCREEN??

The scene where she finally admits that she isnt the real Jiang daughter made me cry so goddamn hard. The regrets of a father who pushed his daughter away and abandoned her... he got his redemption arc but also his self inflicted punishment in the end

Where to start with A Li and Xiao Heng tbh. Perfect chemistry. Perfect banter. No notes. It was incredible that they showed so much affection to each other after ep 34 I was dying every time they were on screen.

Not Xiao Heng acting silly A Li finally told him that she likes him and wants to renovate his house LMAO.

Their wedding night scene was just so tender and intimate and I was surprised (but not at all displeased) that they gave us such an extended kiss scene lmao??? ABOUT DAMN TIME

God if I took a shot every time Xiao Heng gives A Li a longing/incredulous look as if he cannot believe she really exists I would be wasted because that man is a master of those...

Also after finally seeing that Xiao Heng talisman in mouth scene I regret to say that I instantly became even more feral for this man than I already am. They gave him a freaking Guan Gong blade!

The battle scenes were IMPECCABLY choreographed and I cried for Lu Ji and Wen Ji so hard. Why did they have to kill them. WHY. We went through so much together??? Why do this to Xiao Heng has he not lost enough my guys???

As a revenge drama this was just so incredibly satisfying to see all the wrongs be righted and everyone ended up exactly where they were supposed to be!!!

Also did you guys know that there's a secret episode where they play Go with sexual innuendos ??????????? And flirt?????? And have a child???????

I am foaming at the mouth I need to rant about something in Feral Casey AU.

Okay so Usagi and Hana.

Usagi and Hana are the Henry and Sam of FCAU. Quite literally if you have seen TLOU HBO series. This wasn't my intention though.

I know I wanted one of the main cast to be deaf, a challenge to better myself in representation. And originally, I chose Usagi.

It was gonna be so cute. Usagi getting caught in an explosion to save Hana and then the two end up needing to rely on each other. Usagi needed her ears, and Hana needed his protection and guidance.

Then Leo and Usagi would be the ultimate disabled couple with Leo being an amputee. And they would be so fucking cute together and AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA--

But there was a problem.

Hana didn't have a personality.

At the time, her only personality trait was that she was dependent on Usagi and then ultimately became a rude character that I didn't want her to be. I tried to twist it as her overcoming ableism but nothing worked out.

After much debate, I made Hana the deaf character to fix her personality.

I'm not saying being deaf is a personality trait. But Hana being deaf brought out a better personality within her.

Now I have a little girl who becomes deaf in the crossfire of an explosion and her personality takes a turn. She is scared, she is lost, and she needs Usagi to be her shield. Once they finally find the Resistance and Casey Jr taught her sign language, she became more independent.

Because she had hearing beforehand, she knows of a life where sound meant something to her. And she wants it back more than anything. She gets cochlear implants and wears them all the time. Usagi is happy for her.

But then things come up. Noises became too much, she starts getting headaches, the implants become uncomfortable since she wears them ALL DAY.

She refuses to put them on one day and this is Usagi and Hana’s first fight of many.

Now, don't get me wrong, Usagi wants to be a good brother. Truly. But he doesn't understand Hana’s situation. He just assumes at first.

In this fight, Usagi and Hana go back and forth about needing the implants until Hana manages to sign why she hates them. Usagi negotiates a compromise, asking her to wear them when they are outside. The outside contains Kraang and gunfire and other things that you need to listen out for. Hana agrees.

But then things get worse.

Her hearing becomes more and more damaged and the implants needed to get upgraded again and again. She still finds them uncomfortable to wear, still gets headaches when she wears them, voices become harder to understand, and implants are very hard to come by in the apocalypse.

So one day, when she and the others are meant to be going out, she refused to wear them. Usagi and Hana fight again.

Usagi wants to keep her safe, you know? He means well. But Hana was just not having it. Her anger bubbles over as she aggressively signs her thoughts until her hands stopped making sense.

And then all she could do was scream.

Then she broke down crying.

The siblings never fought again after that. Usagi finally breaks out of his audism mindset and learns to support Hana’s choices no matter what.

We get to watch a character go from a scared, shy, dependant child turn into a stubborn-headed, strong, independent girl through the journey of accepting Deafness. This is a journey I have been building since the idea for FCAU started and I am grateful to have the support of my ASL professor (who is Deaf) who caught me drawing sketches of Hana and became invested in helping me.

And there is a reason why Usagi is so keen on his ways but I don't wanna spoil it yet. TLDR, it has to do with depression and shit. It's a whole thing that we'll get into later.

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL.

Without spoiling too much, there's going to be a particular episode about 1/4 way through the story involving Usagi and Hana’s relationship and uhh let's just say it'll make you cry.

Usagi proves himself as the loving brother that will do anything for his sister and puts her above all else.

As Hana faces a great fear that she is no longer afraid off because she knows she can handle it and knows who got her back.

Oh wonderful!! My woman* isn't super ready yet but I know a few things and I have a few ideas. For one, she'll be as feral as the game will allow me to be. This is a woman who SUCKS. Considering that, apparently, the elves are sometimes insultingly called "bat-face", I decided to lean into that and make her a bit bat-like. Not sure how much yet, that's...what I need to sketch out. But she'll have these unnaturally tilted very round beady eyes and very large ears. She'll be a bit tan and have a blond buzzcut because idk when I went "I think elves should look uncanny" I very vividly imagined a tanned wiry and lanky elven lady with pitch black eyes and very short hair. And I see no reason to change what my imagination instinctively thought of.

I'm thinking of playing as a mage, but also I'm pretty sure I want to be a mage in Veilguard and playing as a mage in both games feels a bit stale? So maybe I'll go for a rogue? But also being a mage in DAI feels like it could be juicy? So I have to think about that.

Personality-wise, I am undecided between two concepts and I'll go with whichever one the game will allow me to actually play out. In either case, she'll be absolutely rancid. If BG3 was fantasy Gnosticism, I'm sure DA can be fantasy Catholicism. If I just squint hard enough. I mean there are inquisitions, I can find a way to shove something catholic in there. Well it doesn't really matter, what matters is that there IS a religious system and that means there can be fanaticism. This character I'll be playing will either be the most fanatical person ever...or someone who just doesn't care but SEEMS like a fanatic, because it's the kind of person who will invite Jehovah's witnesses for a cup of tea and nod along as they monologue not because the person would agree but because they find it entertaining.

Honestly both of these routes are fine with me because both of them happen in real life but the actual fundamentalists and fanatics usually don't make it to the top because they care too much to ever get there. Like, most people who sit at the top of fundie spaces aren't actually in it for the love of the game, they're in it to win it. And it makes sense because you have to do a lot of things that go directly against your cause and your faith when you're at the top of such a space. So yeah.

I'm not sure what uuuh elf devotional tattoo, I forgot what they're called, I'll give her yet. I'm thinking either Mythal for the irony or Elgar'nan for it to actually fit. Can't decide if I want to go with the hilarious irony or not.

Also...the funny thing is...I don't think she'll be like...rancid in communication? Like...she won't be as friendly as my BG3 guy "Osob", but she won't be rude either, I think. It's like...she will be rancid, but it's the kind of rancid you see in a person only when they let their guard down and you realise "Wait hold up, this person I've been friends with for so long believes THIS???". But idk about that yet. Most of all I just want her to be a hungry rabid coyote staring at you from the dark.

So far I'm thinking of naming her Willa, derived from William Phipps who gave the go ahead for Salem witch trials, or Olivaria, derived from Oliver Cromwell, who didn't really have a hand in inquisitions but he was a fanatical piece of shit.

*yeah ok so about that. This is the part where I pull out a move the game itself can't handle so it has to exist only in my imagination. So yes, she will be a woman in Inquisition. But. I just think it'd be really funny if she realised that she isn't a she after the events of the game. Now you might be asking yourself why I'd bust out such a convoluted move. Honestly I don't know how to make this sound normal, but there are several factors at play here, the most important being that I need the inquisitor to fuck Solas (because I need to know what the deal is. I need to understand what's going on in this place.) (honestly not sure how I'll even manage that tho because I...I don't think anyone will want to romance this inquisitor. Who the hell would want this rat.) but I feel like it'd be funny to sorta game the straight-lock. Like "Oh, I have to be a female elf to romance him? Checkmate, my character just doesn't know that he's trans yet." And honestly the really petty person in me also doesn't want to be just another elven woman inquisitor with a bun. But also yeah I think it'd be really funny. Like all around. For everyone. Imagine you're the inquisitor and you think you're a cis woman and then the plot happens and right after everything is over you're like "...I think this journey may have unlocked something in me."

my plan was also to have my lavellan be trans in veilguard and i am... legitimately sad about the fact that apparently that won't be possible according to a recent interview, but ah well; doesn't matter what bioware have to say about it, we write our own canon for our own characters!

Yes yes yes!!!! Even in the movies, the whole “at least he’s not on fire!” “What’s left of him isn’t on fire!” scene to me felt very much like a friendly/familial bickering, they weren’t being rude or mean to each other, they were both a little shocked at the state of everything and that’s how they communicate

They!!Are!!Friends!!And!!Love!!Each!!Other!!

Yes, exactly! Even when they're bickering, they're both very visibly enjoying themselves. Poe's barely restraining the urge to smile, you can see it in his eyes, and Rey doesn't even try to stop herself from smiling when she whips out the "you're difficult". Poe's also smiling when he approaches her, even as he starts being sarcastic??? Like...they like each other, they just bicker as a love language?

Like these are not the expressions of two people who hate each other. They're exasperated by each other right now, sure, but the banter is so familiar for them by this point that they're also enjoying it underneath the frustration.

It also irks me (but just goes to show how frankly astoundingly little the fandom actually pays attention to these characters/can't read them) because we know what Poe and Rey look like when they're interacting with characters they hate/cannot stand...and that energy is not here?

by contrast, think of poe's expression uh. any time he's dealing with the first order, or his anger with holdo when he believes she's just leading them to their deaths. think of rey's absolute fury at teedo or legitimately any interaction with ren (barring the five minutes she gave him the benefit of the doubt and he instead chose to be the one true dick) - Rey does not minimize her anger or frustration with people. She sure as hell doesn't smile smugly at people she hates and can't stand, she's a feral little sand gremlin and if she doesn't like you, you're gonna fucking know it.

And altho their banter/bickering match does deteriorate into a genuine argument, let's see what else happens here shall we? Poe puts his two cents in ("you're the best fighter we have, we need you. out there, not here") and walks away before it can get any worse, allowing them to cool off. And Rey is visibly okay with this, she doesn't look worried when Poe walks off, instead she just has that "fuck my friend rightfully called me out on my shit that I don't want to unpack yet" look. Like, Rey is the queen of abandonment issues - after knowing Finn for a day, him leaving in tfa was enough to hurtle her into a traumatic flashback turned Force vision; and there's no doubt the throne room made that worse.

And look, I'm also the queen of abandonment issues, it's one reason why I relate so heavily to Rey. Which is why Rey's lack of a reaction to Poe walking away strikes me so profoundly: because Rey isn't afraid he won't come back. It takes a seriously deep level of friendship to achieve that. I experience that with my qpps 99% of the time, and that other 1% is when my anxiety is really awful but even underneath that I know they won't leave me. Rey seems as confident in Poe not leaving her as a friend, as I am my committed platonic life partners. Let that sink in for a minute.

What happens after that, is that when Rey decides to leave to find the wayfinder, she isn't surprised when Poe shows up to (as far as she knows, tho we know he and finn were planning on going) say goodbye, and immediately makes sure they're on good terms before she leaves, just in case.

Poe also checks in on her before they leave because he notices she's acting strangely/drinking in the scenery like she won't see it again, and promptly spends...a lot of the movie worrying about her?

He grounds her several times in the novelization(s).......but is also one of the reasons Rey snaps in the desert with Ren and the transport. In the junior novelization (iirc), she thinks about all the horrible things Ren has done to her and her friends, and one of the things she thinks before she loses control is how he tortured Poe. And then (I can't remember in which novelization) it's Poe's voice who snaps her out of her shell-shocked daze following the transport blowing up. In the regular one, he also gently tells her in the ship to go take a minute and he'll take care of the flying so she can just....have a breather and process what happened and doesn't hold what happened against her in the least (which we also see in the movie).

And BONUS points he trusts her instinctively aboard the Steadfast when she gets a Force feeling (I think the line in the novel is something like "when she got that look, a fellow knew he ought just to follow"? Or it may have been another scene I can't remember). Like.....they're friends. I don't know how much more explicit the movie could have made it, unless folks wanted them sharing a secret handshake or wanted them to briefly pause the movie to add a powerpoint presentation text above their heads going "they're friends". They bicker and they argue and they get exasperated with each other, especially over their similarities (because Rey is a lot like Poe), but they genuinely love and care for one another, and to be quite honest saying otherwise is a huge fucking disservice to how much Daisy and Oscar put into crafting their dynamic.

So, spoiler free. After i finished the episode i went grocery shopping and accidentally bought fifty bucks worth of comfort cheese.

TLOU SPOILERS (EPISODE ONE & GAME) BELOW THE CUT

OK, In no particular order;

The way they introduced the concept of a fungal pandemic was amazing, the absolute dread that opener inspired was absolutely amazing, and I really commend them for adding that little bit of world building.

Speaking of dread - the way we just follow Sarah about her day, the little hints of the world rapidly going to hell around them with her being an innocent child who is none the wiser, was amazing. The old lady twitching out of focus in the background was hella effective.

Oh god. Joel & Sarah. Their relationship is perfect. The way they caught this sliver of one day of their lives and you already know so much about them, that Sarah has definitely been raised in a loving environment, feels comfortable and safe with her dad, and that they are extremely close. It's magnificent.

Im gonna jump around a little here, but the bookend deaths in this episode were EXTREMELY effective. Joel killing his neighbour with a wrench out of necessity, the way Sarah reacts (reasonably and terrified) and almost looks at her dad differently. Ellie, who watches Joel brutally murder someone with his bare hands, which it could be argued he didnt have to do (this guy could have been bribed) and she looks like she trusts him more.

TESS!! Oh god. TBH I never really paid her much attention on my playthroughs, but MAN they did us a favour by fleshing her out - the softness and intimacy she displays with Joel, the sarcasm.

THAT scene; I knew it was coming. I knew I would cry. I didnt know id cry so hard id have to pause the show, get up and have a cigarette to calm down.

ELLIE;

Bella Ramsey is perfect in this role. They have such a command of the character, the sarcasm, you already get the feeling that she knows she is alone in the world, and is trying to hide it as best she can. But Ellie is just a kid.

The scene of her immediately getting yeeted into a wall was absurdly funny and shouldnt have made me laugh.

She places her trust in strength, and that's going to come back in Winter.

JOEL;

Oh god Joel.

Lets talk about two BIG changes they have made, right off the bat. He is more sympathetic, and more unhinged.

The drugs, was a surprising choice, but one that makes complete sense. He is truly a wounded animal, medicating and lashing out at any given opportunity.

I love that they have him as Tess's attack dog - because thats exactly what he is. A German Shepherd with PTSD.

His blunt, dont give a fuck attitude is absolutely spot on, and the way he carries himself, single minded and focused is so spot on.

THEY HAD NO RIGHT FOR OUR FIRST SHOT TO BE OF A SHIRTLESS SNUGGLER - THAT WAS RUDE AS FUCK

LETS GET THIS OUT OF THE WAY - ALWAYS KEEP HIM WET. THE SLICK BACK HAIR, THE WHORE STANCE, THE ABSOLUTE FERAL LOOK OF RAGE ON HIS FACE, I AM DESPERATE TO FUCK THIS MAN.
