Picture You
Summary: After your fight, Vi finally reaches out to you about making things better, but your only question is if things will be the same between the two of you again, and if she sees you how you see her.
Relationship: Platonic (For now)
Character: Vi (Arcane)
Warnings: Angst, sexual undertones??, fluff?, fem reader, lmk if there's anything else I should add.
Part one
It had been 2 days since Vi asked to speak to you, it's not that you didn't want to go see her, because you did, but you just had a gut feeling it wasn't right.
You tried so hard to be what she wanted but to find out she was talking to someone else the whole time she was sleeping with you.
Even though you hated to admit it was her using you, you knew deep down that is what it had to be.
You also couldn't stop thinking about Caitlyn, you had an idea that would conjure up from time to time wondering if you should reach out her, but you couldn't even think of what you would ever say to her.
Powder knew Vi had asked you to come over and talk, but she didn't pressure you into going over and neither did Vi. She hadn't texted you again since her proposal, you think she had assumed by this point that you weren't coming.
Maybe closure would be good, just go over and pretend nothing ever happened, yet at the same time you didn't just want to be her toy. Plus, pretending something never happened would just give her even more of an upper hand than she already had.
You let out a sigh and grabbed your keys, making your way out to your car, where you sat for about 20 minutes thinking about what you were going to say to her.
Your foot finally presses the gas, and you get on your way to Vi's apartment, on the way there you kept assuring yourself that everything was going to be okay, and this would be something the two of you would laugh at in the future.
The wheels of your car turn into the parking garage on her complex, this time you didn't hesitate, you shut off the engine and walked off to the elevator taking you up to the lobby.
This is when the negative thoughts started to pour in again, what if Caitlyn was there? Waiting to tell you how in love her and Vi are and that they never want to see you again.
You felt like you were going to throw up, this made you feel so pathetic, that one singular person was making you feel this hopeless without even trying.
Once you finally reached her door you stood there for a moment, procrastinating more and more.
Without giving it another thought you knocked on the door, before your mind could stop you again.
It took a bit for Vi to reach the door, your overthinking kept getting the best of you, you considered the fact that she probably had someone else behind that door and was hiding her before she'd open the door for you.
However, unbeknownst to you, she was sat near the door, trying to calm herself as she stared at you through the peep hole
She had been just as worried about this meeting as you had been.
When she finally opened the door all the two of you could do was just look at each other, "Do you want to come in?" Vi finally broke the silence you both had built up.
You sheepishly nod your head; you didn't know why you were so scared for this confrontation.
Maybe it was the fact that you gave her an almost full love confession.
You sit down on one of the stools in the kitchen and sigh, looking around and taking it all in.
"How are things with Caitlyn?"
She's taken aback by your question, and if you're being honest so were you.
"Oh, um..."
"Are you guys officially a thing now?"
"Not exactly."
You roll your eyes, "Is she my replacement?"
"Of course not."
She said it more calmly than you would've liked. It sounded like you weren't much to fight for. This is when you felt your body take over, lifting from the seat and speaking without thinking,
"This is great, really. I tell you how much you mean to me while you're off with some other chick! Did you go off with her after I left that day? Vi do you even care?"
"No! I didn't! I called her a while after you left to tell her I needed time to myself, and before I texted you to come talk to me, I let her know that I had feelings for someone else!"
You stood there just looking right back at her, completely dumbfounded.
"And yes, I do care, a lot actually."
This is when you avert your gaze, not being able to take in everything that was just disclosed.
She walks up to you, taking your face in her hands, "Baby, please look at me."
Tears start to stream down your face when you finally choke up words, "Did you care then? Did you care when I was over here in your bed every night?"
Vi just continues to look at you, wiping away your tears with her thumbs, "Please Vi, answer me."
"I was scared."
"Scared?"
Out of all people, you would never take Vi to be a person that'd would be scared of confrontation. The whole time you knew her she was always willing to say something without even thinking.
"I was scared that if I told you I wanted something more, you would leave, and I was so blind that I couldn't tell that you wanted the same thing. I only started talking to Caitlyn to get over you, and I only still slept with you because I thought that's what you wanted."
None of this was clicking in your head. All you could think about was how defensive she had been that night and quick to get you off her case.
But at the same time, you were thinking it didn't matter because you pretty much had her finally where you wanted her.
You were quick to close the small gap between you two, interlocking your lips for what seemed like the millionth time but also the first, because this time meant something.
She finally pulls away, catching her breath while running her fingers through your hair,
"You're amazing."
You give her a smile in return, putting your head in the crook of her neck.
This was all it ever took. All you both needed was to argue and figure things out.
You finally have her.
After all of these mixed signals, and all of the past lovers, she was finally yours to be with, it was your turn to be happy.
"Don't ever leave me again." She warns, hand still caressing your head.
"I don't plan on leaving any time soon, or ever."
It's finally done and I feel like it sucks 😭 but I'd still like to thank everyone for the support they've given on this fic, it means sm to me!! 🫶🏻

“Away from the crowd” { Queen Bee x g/n reader }
The way I immediately fell for Bee when episode 8 dropped … she’s just so nice , and her design is amazing :D
I haven’t written anything for her yet , so I felt inspired to give it a try ^^
As always I apologize for possible ooc moments in the story , and someone has already written something similar know it’s not my intention to copy anyone !
🍃 Warnings 🍃 : none , this is just pure fluff featuring the reader being a bit tired after one particularly intense party organized by Bee , so she decides to spend some quality time with them :) ❤️
🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 .
“Hey hun , you okay ? Tonight was a bit messy , not gonna lie … sorry I couldn’t spend more time with you .”
(Y/n) smiled at Bee as she spoke , and watched her sit down next to them on one of the sofas in the mansion’s lobby .
They were actually feeling a bit exhausted after spending so much time among the constant chatter of the crowd , they had never seen that many demons attending one of their girlfriend’s parties … but if there was one thing (y/n) couldn’t stand was make her worry for them , so they decided to try their best to ignore just how desperate they were to lie down somewhere and sleep for the rest of the day .
“It’s no problem Bee , I know you were busy … your performance was amazing by the way , I’m sure everyone loved it !”
, they replied , moving a bit closer to her .
“But then again , your songs amazing all the time , so that’s not saying much …”
Bee chuckled , and her four arms wrapped around (y/n) , holding them in a gentle hug .
“Aw , you’re always so sweet to me my little honey bee …”
She then looked at them , caressing their cheek with one hand .
“… but I can tell you’re tired , you look like you could really use some rest . There’s no need to be ashamed about that , y’know ?”
(Y/n) let out a sigh , looking down at the floor while holding the hand Bee had placed on their cheek …
“Yeah , you’re right … sorry love I just … tonight’s party was pretty insane , and since you had so many things to take care of about with entertaining the guest and all I didn’t want you to worry about me as well .”
Her gaze softened as she quietly listened to them , and when they finished talking Bee picked them up from the sofa , causing them to gasp for the surprise .
“Uh - hun ? What are you -“
(Y/n) watched her carry them upstairs to the bedroom just under the roof of the mansion , and after putting them down on the comfy beehive shaped bed Bee sat down next to them .
“Wait , but didn’t you wanna go together to visit your friends in Lust after the party was over ? I’m not that tired , I can just -“
“Nah , that can wait … we’re gonna take the rest of the night to relax . You need to rest my honey bee .”
(Y/n) and Bee lied down next to each other , and she stretched her four arms letting out a sigh .
“Besides , I’m pretty worn out myself … I’ll just send them a quick text and tell them we’re gonna see them another time .”
“Really … ? Are you … sure that’s okay ?”
Bee smiled softly , unable to handle just how adorable and caring her partner was …
She held them close , caressing their back with two of her arms and using the others to hold their waist .
“Of course baby … one night spent with just you is honestly much better than anything else .”
(Y/n) couldn’t help but blush , and they leaned forward to kiss Bee’s forehead , looking into her beautiful pink eyes …
Their girlfriend truly was as sweet as cotton candy .
🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 . 🐝 .
Thank you so much for reading this little story until the end ! :D
Feel free to leave some feedback if you feel like it :) ❤️

Cal is ENROLLED at MY College, Littlerock Technical School!
(Using a fake College name for security reasons! Again!)
(Sequel to my first Reality Imagine!)
(What IF I meet Cal Kestis again, but this time we’re older and we’re in college!)
(Just made this last year…wanting to share it of course!)
(KINDA LONG!)
Rating: G for…LOTS OF FLUFF!
I was dreading for this day to arrive. Apparently, for one of my classes, I am forced to go to campus to take this Biology survey of some kind. Even though doing it at home seemed more appropriate, my professor can be very annoying sometimes. I already have my ID badge with me as I step out of the car. I close the door, waving bye to my dad as I watch him drive off. I vaguely remember what my professor had told us in the email she sent a few days ago. I think we had to go to room 143 in building K. I wasn’t counting on it but I pushed all that aside as I marched my way to the front doors of the main campus building. In the main lobby sit two women, having the jobs of being receptionists. I go up, smiling shyly as one of the women notices me and smile back. “Hi! How can I help you?”, I boomeranged the same greeting. “Do you know where room 143 is?”, I see the woman point to the doors behind me. “That is at building D…across the way from here…”, “Thank you…”, “You’re welcome!”, I left out of there, making my way to the building of building D. Along the way, I see a good amount of people outside, especially in the courtyard that I just walked by. I enter the building seeing the room numbers start in the 130s. I walk up these stairs and come upon room numbers that start in the 140s. I walk just a little further to come upon room 143! I enter the room, seeing my fellow classmates and familiar faces I only seen on screen waiting around. Just as I took a seat, the professor walks, greeting everyone with her smile. “Hi everyone! Good morning! I know this may seems out of context for a lot of you, but I would just like to see personally on how your results are on the Biology survey…so please, follow me…”, Everyone gets up at the same time as I take a look to the see the professor leave the room.
We follow her to the computer lab, with people taking their seats. I took my seat, seeing a log in screen displayed on the monitor. Thank goodness I packed my password book with me! “Okay, now, I want everyone to log on and log into our class website, and we’ll go from there…”, I hear everyone type away on their computers as I type away on mines.
*TIMESKIP*
After what seemed like forever, I had finally took that Biology survey! The professor told us this was the only time we would be called to campus. Everything else is back online. I am just exiting the building, walking down this pathway when I notice a familiar guy sitting at this table by himself. Red-gingery hair, lean muscular body, casual dressing. That can’t be. I walk over, each step feeling heavier than the last. Just as I gotten near, the guy swiftly turns around, like as if he was expecting me. He smiles a smug smile. “Stalking’s rude…”, My eyes widen, not believing at who I was looking at. It was Cal Kestis—from Golden Serria High School. “Cal? Is that you?”, I had to asl, still not knowing if it was him or not. The beard he’s currently growing was throwing me off. Cal’s smile widens as he stands to his feet to face me. “Yeah…hey Lauryn!”, Not sure how or why, but I felt butterflies when he said my name. “Wha-what are you doing h-here?”, I stuttered slightly, seeing Cal was taking in amusement of how surprised I was being here right now.
“You know me, just doing college stuff…you?”, I nod in response, gesturing out my arms. “I’m doing college stuff too…I’m actually chasing a degree that deals with office stuff…”, Cal raises his brows slightly. “Really! Huh…well, hopefully you get your degree…I’m rooting for you…”, I smile, feeling shy as I look to the ground for a moment before looking back at him. “Thanks…are you by chance chasing anything?”, Cal rubs his neck in a nervous manner as he sits back down on the bench of the table. “Just a certificate in Welding…it’s nothin’ special…”, “Cool! You’ll be done in no time…”, Cal looks up to me, smiling widely. “Heh…yeah…true that…are you about to leave?”, I look behind to see some people from my class were walking to the special parking deck Littlerock Technical School had built recently. “I mean…kinda…I’m about to call my parents actually for them to come pick me up…my dad to be exact…”, Cal stands up from the table, grabbing a hold of his bag laying near his feet.
“Well, I can take you home…if you want me to…”, Now I feel my heart start to race. Take me? Home? In a car? My parents will freak the second that they hear I’m coming home in a stranger’s car! Not that Cal’s a stranger. I look to him, scrunching my eyebrows at him. “What, you drive or something?”, Cal takes out his keys from inside his bag, jiggling them in front of me. I can’t help but smile faintly. “Hmm—can you show me…?”, “Sure, follow me…”, Cal starts to walk on ahead, with me following after him, all the way to the parking deck. He takes out his ID card as I take out mine as well to show the guard lady as she had let us through. Cal takes hold of his keys, pressing on this button to make his car unlock, with the car making a beeping sound. I stand in front of it, noticing it was a black Jeep crossroad mix. I stand there to watch Cal open the door to toss his bag inside. He quickly closes it as he comes up to me, seeing I was in a trance. He helps by knocking me out of it, nudging my arm, with my face feeling like it’s on fire.
“You gonna call your parents or what?”, “Oh! Yeah! That! Sorry…”, I quickly take out my phone, calling my mom to see if she would pick up. A few rings in my ear and she does. After the mildly irritating conversation I had with her, she becomes forthright and allows me to come home in a “familiar friend’s” car. And of course, she tells me this will be only a one-time thing. I hang up and shove my phone back into my pocket, turning around to face Cal, who had a worried look on his face the whole time. “So? What did she say?”, “She said it’s okay!”, “Alright! Let’s go…”, Cal goes to the driver’s side, hopping in as I follow after, into the passenger’s side. Just as he starts the engine, my heart starts to race a little again. I look over to Cal, who was so seemingly calm. I haven’t seen Cal in YEARS, and this is how he repays me—by taking me home. During the drive, I couldn’t take my eyes off his new haircut. “I see you trimmed your head a little…”, I see Cal stopped at this red light we came upon as he quickly combs through his hair. “Do you like it?”, “Of course! Yeah! It suits you!”, I couldn’t help but laugh at my own answer as Cal laughs along with me.
Going down the highway, I was keeping my eyes glued for the exit. At the halfway point, that’s when I noticed it. “Here! Turn here!”, Cal nods to me, making the turn. I glance around to see I was right for making that turn as I could see the side shops and the mall just down the road. I directed him a few more times until I noticed we were getting close to my home. Just pulling up and into the driveway, Cal takes out this piece of paper and hands it to me. “Here’s my number—so we’ll keep in touch…”, I calmly take it from him, trying to refrain myself from screaming. “Thanks…I’ll uh…try to text you when I can…”, Cal smiles as he exists the car, walks over to my side, and opens the door for me like a gentleman would. I step out, not helping myself as I hug on him around his neck. He was stiff for a moment, ut he was able to hug me back, around my middle. I release myself from him, smiling to him as I feel warmer than usual in my cheeks as Cal smiles back. He gets back into his Jeep mix, waving goodbye one last time as I watch him pull away and drive off, hoping I cross paths with him again. Someday!
The End!
As usual, leave a like if you did...❤️

Back to the Old House - Chapter 2:
July 16, 2034
[2 weeks and 4 days after Chapter 1]
Raines age: 16 years, 5 months
Ellies age: 15 years, 2 months
CW: D slur used
Words: 2676
Masterlist
Raines Pov:
I felt the fabric surrounding me and my body aching almost everywhere.
I opened my eyes, immediately squinting them at the bright light.
"Wh.. where.." I mumbled my thoughts, my mouth felt dry and my ears rung.
"Hello?" my throat was scratchy, my voice raspy.
I turned my head to the left, my head spun in circles and a black rim surrounded my vision. I saw an empty chair, I looked down to where I was layed.. "Where.." I panted, where the fuck am I?
The more I looked the more medical supplies I saw, am I in some communities hostpital? no, that's impossible.
I moved my legs off the edge of the bed, and went to stand but immediately fell to the ground to my bare knees, my head fell back and I groaned in pain.
After sitting there with my head spinning, I forced myself to get up. "Mother?" I mumbled outloud, It was meant to be loud, to be a scream even, but my voice came out small and quiet.
Once I stood up again, leaning against the bed, I looked around the room. I saw pills sitting on the table beside the bed, I almost fell again from how quickly my legs moved to it. I lifted the bottle, morphine sulfate tablets. I unscrewed the bottle, dumping out the pills, there was only two pills left in the bottle, so I took them both.
I dropped the bottle once I saw water, I unscrewed the bottle and chugged the whole thing. I dropped the, now empty, bottle to the ground as well. I need to get out of here..
I looked down to my outfit to see that I was wearing a hospital gown. Fuck, where are my normal clothes? Whatever.
I leaned against the wall to make my way out of the room, it was dark in the halls. I made my way down the hall until I got to a lobby, there was a desk with what looked to be some sort of documents scattered around the table.
I slowly made my way to the desk to see what it is, maybe get a clue of where I am, maybe this is the fireflies? God I hope it is.
The papers seemed to be just keeping track of the hostpitals inventory. Boring.
"Raine?"
I never lifted my head faster. "Who- the fuck- where am I- Don't fucking come any closer, i'll fuck you up"
The girl raised her hands, "Calm down, I assume you don't remember anything?"
"What the fuck are you talking about? Remember what?"
୨♡୧
The nurse sat me down and said that I was in a coma for over 2 weeks. I wasn't buying anything she was saying, why would they take me in to take care of me and waste all their medication? They don't know me.
She explained to me that two of their citizens who were out on patrol had found me in a library coughing up blood, and that was part of the reason I went into the coma- apparently choking on my own vomit. I don't know, but i'm over this whole thing. I need to get back on the road. Plus i'm still waiting for this girl to whip out a gun and kill me.
"Well, that was very nice of this.. Jackson place, to take me in and waste all their medication instead of leaving me to die, even though its also really fucking stupid. I mean- I could be a baby murderer for all you guys know. But anyways, where's my shit? I mean, my bookbag that has my guns and journal in it and my clothes, where are my clothes? Can I just get my shit and leave please? I was kind of in the middle of something"
The nurse looks at me almost dumbfounded. And then laughs. I looked at her confused. "Wow.. well, you definitely are not leaving until a few more weeks. I would say at least 2 months to be safe-"
"Okay, fuck you. I didn't ask for you guys to save me, like I said, thank you, but I will be on my way, just give me my shit back. Why the fuck do you care anyways? It's not like i'm asking for extra ammo or food"
"Look, dear, I don't know where you are headed, but you are in no condition to be out on the road. You can't even walk straight-"
"Then fucking send me out tomorrow, i'll be back to good by then"
"No.. you won't. Like I said, you were nearly dead when we found you. I'm supprised you're still even with us, it's gonna take weeks for you to heal. And considering you came all the way from Boston, doesn't it sound nice to have a break?"
"What?"
Boston? How the fuck does she know about Boston? Did she read my fucking journal or something?"
The nurse looked at Raine confused, forgetting that she hadn't told her about who found her.
"How do you know I came from there?"
"Oh, I completely forgot to mention. The main reason we saved you is because the girl who found you at the library already knew you, so we did actually know that you weren't a baby murderer."
"What? Who? Is- was... was it fucking Julie?"
"I'm sorry dear, I don't know any Julie. It was Ellie Williams"
I stood up from my chair, looking down at her in her chair. "What the fuck kind of joke is this? You fucking read through my journal or some shit? What kind of sick fucks are you!"
The nurse kept on trying to calm Raine down, but with the drugs she took setting in, it caused her mood swings, along with just coming out of a coma she was still in agitation state.
I moved her hands off of my shoulders, and shoved her to the ground, I felt tears in my eyes, I kicked the nurse in the stomach, watching as she hunched over in pain, "What the fuck is wrong with you?!"
Once I saw her gripping at her stomach, I decided to make a run for it. It was night time, it was dark out. Maybe I can make it out of here?
I ran down the halls to the staircase. I ran down the steps passing each floors until I got to the bottom floor, I didn't hear any footsteps following behind me, "Fucking week ass nurse couldn't even get up after that" I whispered to myself with a chuckle.
I saw the exit sign and ran to it, I opened the doors to a big village, they had lights everywhere, but everyone seemed to be indoors,
I can still make it.
Okay, maybe not.
A lady with short blonde hair gripped tightly onto my shoulders, "Get the fuck off of me!"
The lady was strong, and I hated to admit it, but with the state I was in, I was weak.
"Shh, shh, calm down, its okay, you're safe here. Please calm down."
I gave up. I couldn't fight anymore.
"My name's Maria, i'm the leader of Jackson"
A women as the leader, thats a good sign
"What caused you to be this agitated and try to run away?" Maria asked
"The fucking- the nurse" I panted, my heart was beating so fucking fast.
"Hey, you're gonna be okay, just breath" Maria helped me catch my breath. Once I was breathing normally, she continued. "What did the nurse do?"
"She's a liar. She- she read my personal journal- a- and she's saying someone from my past fucking found me and brought my here"
Maria slowly nodded. "Okay, I know this might seem, impossible, but nobody read your journal. Nobody even opened your bag. It's safely placed in my office. Nobody even knew you had a journal. Now.. I believe this person you're talking about.. are you talking about Ellie?"
My heart went back to my throat, my breathing picked up again, "Why- why do you know her name? Wh- why"
"Keep calm, everythings okay. Ellie lives in this community, she said she knew you back at the Boston QZ, is that correct?"
I nodded, but my confusion grew. "How- thats not possible, Ellie- Ellie.. I thought she was dead.. how the fuck- why the fuck would she be all the way over here? You're lying to me"
"I'm not lying to you. Do you want to see her with your own eyes?"
I quickly shook my head no. No way do I wanna face her after putting her through that year of misery.
"That's okay, and I understand how crazy it seems, both of you from Boston ending up in Jackson, Wyoming, I was shocked to hear it myself, but it's true."
"I.. I dont have time for this, can you take me to your office so I can get my bag and leave?"
"You may have your stuff.. minus the guns. And you won't be leaving till you're stable."
"Please.." I whispered, my eyes burning
"Why are you in such a rush? May I ask where you're headed?"
"Actually.. maybe you could help me? C- can I ask a question?"
"Sure.. go ahead, I hope I have the answer you're looking for."
"Is- or was anyone in this community ever a firefly?"
I could tell by Marias eyes that she got confused from the question.
"Uh.. yeah, we have a few. My husband was on-"
"Really?" My eyes light up- is this really it? am I finally gonna get there?
"Yeah.."
"Can I please speak to your husband? Where is he? What time is it? Is he still awake?"
"Yeah, you can talk to him.. he still is awake, its only 21:00. Hes still at Joels, come on, i'll take you there"
Maria started walking, and I, now calmed down a lot more and new found hope in my bones, happily walked beside her.
"So who's this Joel guy?"
"He's uh.. He's his brother."
"Oh, nice. So what's the ex-fireflies name?"
"Tommy"
The rest of the walk was Maria giving me a tour, all though I didn't pay attention at all. We had stopped at her house and she gave me clothes- just a pair of jeans and a white tanktop (and new undergarments) and we were back on our walk
"This is it... look, I don't know what you want to talk with him about, but.. I wouldn't get your hopes up too high. Once you're done talking, come to my house and i'll let you stay in the extra bedroom we have"
I nodded to her, hoping I would somehow remember where her house was after.
I knocked at the door, glancing slightly behind me watching Maria walk away. Fuck. Couldn't she just have stayed to introduce me to them and then leave?
I shook my leg up and down, staring at the ground biting my lips, hearing men talking inside, although I couldnt make out what they were saying. Wait, what the fuck did Maria meant by-
"Hello?"
A confused mid aged man opened the door, "H- hi, uh, Maria showed me to here, i'm looking for tommy?"
The man nodded, "And you are..?"
"Fuck- right, im Raine- Raine Laval"
The mans eyebrows raised, "Oh, wow, you uh, you're on your feet now, how long have you been awake?"
"Oh.. just about an hour"
"And you're already walking around?"
"Uh..."
"Sorry for my manners, come in" It was only until now that I realized he had an accent, sounded southern.
"Um, are you tommy or.."
"No, Tommy is just in the living room, i'm Joel, it's nice to finally meet you"
"Oh, thanks"
Joel brought me to the living room were another man sat, "Well, take a seat anywhere, we were just wrapping up a game of cards"
I nodded awkwardly, trying to ignore my shakey hands, I sat in the comfy chair as they sat on the sofa, cards facing down were on the table.
"Tommy, this is Raine"
Tommys eyebrows raised slightly looking at me, before he cleared his throat, "Hello Raine, good to see you on your feet, you here for Ellie?"
My eyebrows scrunched confused and shook my head no, I still don't even believe these people about Ellie. There's just no fucking way. And why the fuck would Ellie be at the random old guys house?
"I- i'm here for you.. I wanted to speak to an ex-firefly.." I said nervously, bobbing my knee up and down, picking at scabs at my arms.
"Oh.. well, what for? Did you have questions?"
"Yeah.. I- I've been looking for the fireflies for the past year now, I never got a direct answer, just that it was out west and more in the middle.." I watched as Tommy and Joel both turned to look at eachother, Joels mouth opened to speak but closed back up right after, and they both looked back at me. I started to get even more anxious at that.
"Uh.. so, you know, as an ex firefly, do you.. maybe know? Where they are at? Specifically the ones that were looking for the cure?"
"Look kid.. I, uh," Tommy spoke, glancing back at Joel and then to me, "I don't think there are.. any fireflies, looking for a cure anymore"
"What.. what do you mean?"
"They.. they where looking for one.. and they even- they even found people that were immune, but, their immunity didn't do anything.. they couldnt create a vaccine with it or anything.. so they.. they gave up" Joel said, scratching the back of his head.
I scoffed, "No, I don't think you understand, they wouldn't just give up, she wouldn't just give up." I stood up, eyebrows furred, almost yelling.
"They did, I know it might be a lot to take it, but they all went their separate ways" Joel said, standing up, I walked over to him, pointing my finger at him, "What the fuck do you know? You were never even a firefly were you? Huh? Why the fuck should I believe you anyways?!" I pushed on his chest. I felt myself loosing hope.
"I know it sounds crazy-" Joel tried
"Sounds crazy?! Sounds fucking crazy? What the fuck is up with this fucking community and saying the most impossible, unbelievable, bullshit? Do you guys really think im that fucking dumb! I mean seriously? What the fuck is up with this town?"
Joel contuined to try and calm me down, placing his hands on my shoulders, "No, get your FUCKING hands off of me! Don't fucking touch me, don't tell me to fucking calm down! I did not come all the way from fucking! Boston! For nothing!" I was yelling now. Tears were running down my face.
I stopped yelling once I heard that voice, say my name, again.
"Raine?"
I turned around, snot and tears running down my face, my lips red from crying.
I scoffed once I saw her stand side by side with a girl. She had short black hair and tattoos. I looked down to see their fingers tangled, but once Ellie noticed I saw, she quickly let go, and took a step away from the girl.
I felt tears run down my cheeks uncontrollably, and I wasnt even blinking.
"What? You fucking found your dad or some shit?" I said bitterly, looking back at Joel and back to her, "Is that why you ran away? To be with daddy?"
I bit the inside of my cheek hard and spoke up again, walking towards them. "See you found a new dyke relationship too" I mumbled quiet enough for only the two girls to hear, as I shoved Ellie to the side to open the door and slam it shut.

Just Like That
When Peter came out of his room, it was to chaos completely caused by Lucy. Just over the railing of the stairs, he could see his baby sister streaking around the living room and Levi chasing after her. Probably in an attempt to get her diaper back on. Stephen was sitting on the couch reading a book while the little girl screeched with laughter, so Peter assumed the sorcerer learned to pick and choose his battles. At least until Lucy tired herself out.
So it was a normal day. Even Athena was walking around and picking up toys and trash to put in their rightful place…which admittedly was a little weirder. Athena didn't usually do stuff like that. If only because their family was pretty good about picking up after themselves in the first place.
"Hey Mom. Gonna meet with Harley and pick up Cassie and Will at school." Peter says as he walks down the stairs.
"What about Thomas?" Stephen asks, looking up from his book.
"Think he said something about hanging out with friends after school. He'll probably text you soon and let you know."
"Alright, have fun."
"Good luck with Lucy." Peter snickers as he heads for the elevator and Stephen snorts in response.
"I'm leaving her for your father, Bucky, or Thomas."
Peter laughs as he walks into the elevator and takes it down to the lobby to leave the tower. While he had his driver's license, as well as Harley, sometimes they both found it easier to walk or take the subway. Sometimes they even used their suits to get around since their identities were public knowledge. The twins and Cassie's identities were still secret, but considering Thomas could run wherever he wanted to without anyone noticing and William could teleport…it wasn't a big deal to them. Cassie was the only one restricted to getting rides, taking the subway, or when Stephen was available, a gateway back home.
Most days, she only had to walk as far as the station that Quill worked at to get a ride home. He tried to keep his schedule lined up with hers so he could take her home afterwards. Today though, Peter and Harley were taking Cassie and William on a double date to the cafe the family enjoyed. It was Cassie's idea, and when William agreed to it, Harley was quick to figure out his schedule so he could make it happen.
And everyone thought Peter was whipped. He was…but Harley was worse. Thomas actually called him a simp one day and their dad ended up laughing for the rest of the day. Stephen usually sighed and ignored them whenever anyone acted like that or teased each other.
When Peter finally arrived at Cassie and the twins' school, Harley was already waiting outside with them and Thomas was nowhere to be seen.
"Sorry. Got distracted by Lucy." Peter laughs after Cassie approaches him to greet him with a kiss. "Tommy already leave with his friends?"
William shakes his head. "Not exactly. Their plans fell through because the store they wanted to go to was closed for remodeling today. They had to reschedule so Tommy went home instead."
"Oh, cool. Maybe he can help with Lucy then. She decided diapers are out of fashion." Peter snorts.
"I'm calling it now, she's going to be a menace. Dad thinks I'm bad? She'll probably jump off a jungle gym onto a trampoline and give our parents heart attacks." Harley says.
"Or knock somebody's teeth out playing hockey." Peter adds before pointing in the direction of the cafe. "Come on. Let's go."
"We better buy Mom his chocolate cake before we go home." Cassie reminds them.
"I think he would ground us forever if we don't." William says as the small group makes their way to the cafe.
The short time is spent in idle chatter, either about how the school day went or rumors, or whatever random thing they could think of. Until finally they reach the cafe and they walk in to find a booth. Cassie slipped in next to Peter and William next to Harley as the waitress came over with some menus to give to them. After she walks away, William looks at Peter with a cringe.
"...her diaper wasn't dirty was it?"
Peter bursts into laughter. "I don't think so. Mom was still reading. The only one freaking out was Levi and it freaks out about everything when it comes to Mom's kids."
"It's true. It held up a corner of itself when I sneezed the other day." Cassie tells them.
"But doesn't Levi basically just mirror Mom's thoughts?" Harley asks.
"To an extent, but it is sentient. When Mom was being tortured by that weird alien dude on the spaceship, it was making its own decisions." Peter explains.
"Lucy is going to be a liability."
"I blame Dad." Cassie snickers just as the waitress comes back to take their order.
They ordered their food, which fortunately didn't take long to come out since Peter was starving , and he immediately started shoving fries into his mouth. Cassie gave him a look which immediately had him slowing down, and realized the look very closely resembled the one Stephen would give him. It was evidence that Cassie really was Mama Bear Junior as everyone liked to call her. Cassie didn't even argue against it much to Tony's amusement.
It was in the middle of their meal, when Peter was attempting to sneak a couple of fries from Harley's plate, when the group was interrupted. By a teenage girl that looked to be just a little younger than them…and made herself at home by slipping in next to Harley. They blinked at her in confusion and then owlishly when she just sighed and took some fries from Harley's plate.
"Ugh. I know. Weird stranger right? Please tell me Doctor Strange is your mom." She finally says.
"Umm…depends on who's asking." Peter finally responds.
"I knew him in another universe, but he wasn't your mom there. He wasn't a parent to anyone . But then I found out about this universe and knew I had to get in on it. It's one of the most peaceful ones I've been to." The girl shoves another frie into her mouth before holding out her hand to Cassie. "America Chavez. Nice to meet you."
Cassie tentatively takes her hand to shake it. "Uh…Cassie Lang."
America's eyes bug out as she turns Cassie's hand to stare at the ring on her finger. "Holy crap! You're married? Getting married? To who?!"
"That dimwit over there." Harley finally says, pointing at Peter.
"Dude, come on."
"This has to be the right universe then!" America smiles. "Where is he anyway?"
"Mom? He's at home." William answers, finishing off his lunch. "Probably finally getting a diaper back on Lucy if Thomas wore her out enough."
"Did he marry Tony Stark?"
Harley sighs when America takes the last of his french fries and pulls out his wallet in defeat. "Maybe we should just buy the cake and take you home with us."
America grins. "Chocolate cake for Stephen?"
Cassie raises an eyebrow. "Is he a whore for chocolate in other universes too?"
"Totally. He's just better at hiding it."
William snorts. "Not here."
"Well come on! I'm dying to see Stephen all domestic. I've only seen him serious." America says as she gets back up.
Cassie pops the rest of her chicken sandwich into her mouth as Harley slides out of the booth to buy some chocolate cake to go and pay their bill, and she steps away from America with Peter and William. They whispered amongst themselves about how safe it was to actually bring America back home with them, but Peter had told them his spider senses weren't going haywire. So they figured it was safe enough. When Harley walked back over after he left a tip on the table, he took William's hand as his boyfriend took Peter's, who took Cassie's.
When Cassie held out her hand for America's, the younger looked at her in confusion. "Uhh…are you doing a prayer or something?"
Cassie laughs. "Nope. Going home. Just William's way."
America looked at them skeptically but eventually shrugged and took Cassie's offered hand, and in an instant they were back on the family floor of the tower. Peter still remembered when he first used William's teleportation ability. It actually gave him sensory overload and William had felt so terrible about it, but Peter had reassured him he was okay and that he just needed to get used to it. They practiced with shorter distances so Peter could adjust, and only teleported over long distances in an emergency.
America didn't seem phased at all. It was probably nothing to her considering she told them that she had been to other universes. Was she a super like them? Was that her power?
She was surprised though, when Valerie shuffled over to William immediately and held her arms up. "Liam! I got to paint my plate today!"
"Oh yeah? How about you show me Angel?" William smiles, walking away with the little girl to climb the nearby stairs.
Cassie was the next to be lured away by Diana who eagerly requested mani pedis, leaving Harley and Peter with America in the middle of the entryway. In fact, that was when Peter noticed that the floor was silent , so it meant that someone was able to put Lucy down for her nap. Maybe. Unless she weaseled her way down to the lab with their father.
"Mom?" Peter calls out experimentally.
"In the kitchen." Stephen calls back. "Thomas was able to wrangle your sister into a diaper and her high chair."
America follows the boys into the kitchen and Peter nearly laughs when her eyes practically bug out of her head when she finds Stephen wiping Lucy's mouth.
"Wow. Nothing could have prepared me for that." She breathes out, making Stephen look up at the new voice.
"Who's this?"
"America Chavez. She claims to know you in other universes." Harley answers.
Stephen raises an eyebrow. "Other universes? You can travel the multiverse?"
"I just learned how to do it with precision. I used to jump between them…and when I heard there was a universe where you were a mom to a bunch of kids…" she trails off and frowns a little. "I wanted to see for myself."
"Where's your family?" Stephen asks, frowning.
Harley and Peter looked at each other knowingly when America admitted they went missing because of her powers when she was little. Stephen was so predictable at this point that they looked back at America before their mother could even open his mouth to respond, and looped their arms with hers.
"We got it Mom. We'll show her her room while you tell Dad we have another sister!" Peter calls over his shoulder as they lead the younger teen to the stairs.
"Wait, really?" America gapes. "Just like that? I could be an ax murderer!"
"Nah. If you were, Peter's spider senses would have clued him in." Harley says easily. "Just a warning that Will sleep teleports sometimes so don't freak out if he ends up in your room in the middle of the night."
There was some sputtering coming from the direction of the kitchen, followed by Lucy's giggling, before there was a heavy sigh. One of defeat that made Harley and Peter grin again once they stopped in front of the empty room that would be America's.
"Your father will never let me live this down."
"Live what down?" Tony's voice follows.
"...we have another daughter."
"Magic baby or adopted?"
"Adopted."
"Oh…okay. Is there any more coffee?"
America gawks again which makes the boys burst into laughter. "Just like that?!"
"Just like that."

Charming Town |8| Jax Teller

Scott Rosen was waiting in the waiting room with the other sons when Ryder came in and scooped up the miniature redhead into her arms and held her close, he had only ever heard stories of the woman and the legacy she was building in not only Tacoma but in New York had been spreading like wildfires. The showdown she and Harvey Specter, who were working together for the first time, had on the final day of the trial where one of their former client’s employees claimed they were robbed and assaulted on the client's property was the biggest story.
To him it made sense that she was like that, she was the Princess of Samcrow but not everyone in their world knew that. “Mrs. Teller? I am Scott Rosen.” He said after a few seconds, causing her to look at him. “Your husband said you wanted to sign the papers?” “Yeah. I do.” she returned, pressing another kiss to her daughter's cheek before setting her down on her feet. The little girl went right to Tig who pocketed his cell phone and lowered himself to sit on the floor next to her, already taking the doll she held out to him.
She watched for a few minutes before turning to look back at Rosen who had the files in his hands ready for her to read and sign.
“You know you can trust my work right?” Rosen asked, watching her read over it. “I do but it's a habit to read over everything.” She returned, she had developed a habit of reading over everything including the paperwork that the other senior partners had gotten done. The need to be perfect, like Gemma had taught her, was always overwhelming, and 90% of the time she gave into it.
“You know,” he started as he handed a pen to her to use, “if you ever want to relocate down here. There's always a place open at my office. I am sure your husband would love having you closer.” He leaned closer, not missing how Chibs straightened up and was ready to move if need be, “And honestly we need someone as smart as you at my firm.” “I will have to keep that in mind. Thank you.” Ryder handed the papers over to the man and took a full step back, “Hey munchkin, do you want to go see Uncle Opie and Auntie D?” “Yeah!” Harley exclaimed as she stood up quickly. Other than her father, Opie was Harley’s favorite person in the whole world and only seeing him a handful of times since he got out of Chino was enough to cement it.``Get your stuff and tell Uncle Elvis, Chibby and Tigger thank you.” The little girl took her stuffed bear and doll from Tig and said her quiet thank you before her mother picked her up and bounced her once before the waiting room and gave Tara, who was hovering in the doorway, a look. “Dr. Knowles.” “Dr. Knowles.” Harley parrotted with a giggle before exclaiming for her father who had come out of the hallway that led to the NICU rooms.
“No bloodshed yet, that's a good thing,” Bobby commented as Gemma joined them. “Not yet.” she agreed, “She is trying to be prim and lawyer-like. Give it time. She will be our Ryder again before long.” The Queen was sure about that, there was no outrunning their pasts. Either you faced it head-on or you ran scared. And Ryder had only ever run scared once and that was because of heartbreak and nothing else.
***
Jax settled his free arm around his wife’s shoulders once she pressed the button for the lobby and pulled her into him. Having both her and Harley close brought an overwhelming sense of peace to him.
“Donna wants to know if it’s okay if Harley spends the night with her and the kids.” She said softly reaching her hand up and fixing the black Harley Davidson tee shirt that he had dressed their daughter in that morning. Jax nodded his head, “means we can sleep at the clubhouse in my dorm until we can find another house.” Gemma already had some of the crow eaters and Luanne was looking for a house for them.
“What? You don’t like sleeping on an old twin bed?” She teased knowing that he hated it and had always insisted that they stayed at Gemma’s or at the clubhouse. The elevator ride down to the ground level was short and the Tellers exited the elevator and went towards where Ryder’s cage was parked.
“It was fine when you were 16 babe but we are adults and married.” He returned. “And you don’t want Piney threatening to shoot you with the shotgun again.” After the first time that Jax hurt her and she had forgiven him, he came over to the house and climbed through her window and Piney came busting in after he heard Ryder’s laughter and Jax’s curses from landing on the desk and said desk collapsing under his weight.
“That was one time, Ry, one time.” Ryder shrugged her shoulders keeping her laughter to herself and pressed the unlock button on the key fob before pulling the backdoor open so she could put Harley in her car seat. Jax stepped around her and put their daughter in with ease.
“I will see you soon okay?”
“K.” The little girl returned and knocked her feet together so the lights came on. Jax pressed a kiss to her head and then shut the door.
“Clubhouse later?” She asked, glancing up at him. “Yeah, I have some club stuff to handle first, and if Abel.” “I will be here if Abel has surgery and I am sure we won’t be able to pull Grandma Gemma away.”
“That’s true.” He laughed before holding his hand up in the direction of the boys who were calling him.
“Go. I will see you later.” She assured him with a small smile. She hated that she was allowing herself to slip right back into the familiarity of their relationship.
Smirking, Jax dipped his head and pressed a kiss to her lips, he only meant it to be a quick kiss, he had club stuff today and she was going to see her sister-in-law and the kids. But she pulled him back to her and into a heated kiss.
“Be careful.” She breathed once they broke apart again.
“Always.”
**
Ryder picked up her daughter once they were standing on Opie and Donna’s front step and let her ring the doorbell to her heart’s content. The door swung open and Donna, Opie’s tiny wife, Ryder's best friend, and Harley's godmother. “It’s about time you two showed up!” She exclaimed, taking the little girl from her mother’s arms. “I see where I rank.” Ryder teased as she stepped into the house and shut the door behind her. Ellie, her niece rushed towards her and hugged her midsection. “Are you staying for a while?” She asked. “Yes, that is the plan sweets.”
“Is it because Uncle Jax had a baby with another lady?” Kenny asked from where he was sitting playing video games, he wasn’t looking at his aunt or mom, his whole attention was on the small device in his hands. “Where did you hear that?” Ryder asked surprised looking at Donna who shrugged her shoulders, “They may have heard Opie and I talking.”
“Great.” The taller woman rolled her eyes, “My marriage is subject to gossip everywhere. Bull’s and Donut’s old ladies were talking about it a couple of weeks ago.”
She didn’t have to look at her sister-in-law to know that's what she was going to ask. “I am surprised you didn’t shut them down.” “It’s not my place there Donna. And don’t give me the mother charter VP’s old lady bullshit, I have heard it before. And it doesn’t mean shit.’
Biting her tongue, Donna looked at her niece, “Why don’t we see what kind of trouble we can get into in the kitchen.” “Yeah!” Harley exclaimed, clapping her hands together causing Ellie to laugh and move away from her Aunt.
The girl had been excited when she found out that her aunt was having a little girl, she always wanted a little sister but instead got stuck with Kenny.
They were almost clones of their father and aunt, the only real difference was that Ellie had a head of blonde hair and Ryder was a redhead.
“Come on Ken.’ Ryder said, holding her hand out to him, 'Come help us in the kitchen and later I will go get the video games from Grandpa’s house.’ She had a bad habit of spoiling not only her daughter but her niece and nephew and she was sure that was going to carry onto Abel.
It already had.
The packages being delivered to her dad's house were proof of that.
**
“Hey baby,’ Gemma greeted once Ryder picked up her phone a while later, “They are going to take Abel into surgery.” “I will be there in a few minutes.”
Gemma could hear the laughter of her granddaughter and the Winston children in the background, and she smiled, knowing that Ryder was going to be the one who was going to bring their family back together fully. She was the only one who was going to be able to bring Donna and Opie back in, Gemma had tried and failed spectacularly every time.
“Is Jax back yet?”
“Not yet but Luanne is here and is furious that she hasn’t seen you or Harley.”
“I am not taking my daughter to a porn studio, Gem. Not even for Luanne. I just have to get Harley’s stuff from the car and I will be here.” “See you soon.” She said before snapping the phone shut and looking over at Luanne who had just seen Tara for the first time. “Does Ry know she is here?” “Mhmm.” The queen hummed, “And she is smarter than the two of us combined.” Luanne nodded her head, it hadn’t surprised her at all, Ryder was always destined for something else. Something better than being an old lady and working at an auto shop.

Chapter 19: Equinoxal
I slumped out of my bed, grabbed the phone, and dialed archer.
"Front desk Archer speaking," Arjuna said into the phone.
"Arjuna is Steve, Irving, or Albert there?" I asked tears freely falling from my face.
"Yes, mam, Steve Burnside and Ricardo Irving are in the lobby. I haven't seen Mr. Wesker this morning." Archer said.
"Meet me and the white queen in my office... It's time the Phoenix arose from her flame. After I go Equinoxal brings the D.N.A test to the containment chamber. I can't hide the truth anymore."
"So you made up your mind and decided to put her to rest. I'll be there after I have escorted Mr. Irving to the airstrip,'' Archer said.
"Alright, have a steak and plates sent to my office and Albert's room. Deliver it personally my friend and make sure both steaks are rare please." I spoke hanging up.
It was about time that I went and got prepared for the trial ahead. This would be it. To reveal what is in my heart and embrace him as myself. I was terrified.
I quickly got up and got dressed in a black tank top and long black yoga pants. I threw on my knee-length black sweater and put on my purple corrective shades. I looked like him on the day he captured me.
Without shoes, I headed to my office. The elevator ride was swift and the floor was freezing. Walking off the elevator I swiftly moved to my office. Entering the office I stared at the walls and touched my throat.
"Son of a bitch, why? Why when things were going just as I needed them to, my emotions go and screw everything up." I screamed out as I slammed the door shut.
"White queen activate using code seven four eight," I spoke sitting down in my chair white queen appeared in front of me.
"yes, Tabitha?" She spoke.
"It's time, it's earlier than expected but what you and Archer guessed is true. My heart is too attached. I'm going to reveal who I truly am." I said.
Knock...knock....knock.
"Enter," I said.
"Good morning Commander," agent nighthawk said, "I have your breakfast from Archer."
"Thank you agent Nighthawk. Now if you'll excuse me after this you'll escort me to the containment chamber. " I said taking a bite of the steak, "queen prepare my viral activator, I'm in for a hell of a fight."
(Wesker's P.O.V.)
There was a knock at my door. I swiftly moved to it and opened it. Standing outside was Alistar's assistant.
"Good morning Commander Wesker sir, my lady has instructed me to bring you some breakfast." He said pointing to a cart and opening a cloche, "An A-5 t-bone steak done rare with country-style fried potatoes with two over medium eggs."
"This is a quality choice from your lady. I can't wait to fight her in her Equinoxal form." I spoke taking the food, archer disappeared down the hall.
Then as if in a queue my phone started to ring. Picking it up. I growled in annoyance, "Yes Excella?"
"Albert horrible news about that Alistar woman. We found a grave at the Russian base. It's not for your...wife... but for an Alistar Lancaster and there is a corpse. It seems we have a liar in our midst." she said.
"It seems my intuition was more fact the fiction. Little trickster, what do you think you are doing? Do you think playing as the dead and getting away with tricking me? I wonder how else you will try to entertain me, now that I know your not Alistar. Excella exhumes the body and bury it back in the base in Africa. I should have my daughter close at hand." I said.
"D...d...daughter....," she shuddered, "Yes Albert, just be sure to remember who did this for you." She said hanging up.
I smirked today was going to be fun indeed.
"I guess I should eat. I do not like to keep liars waiting."
(Normal P.O.V. +Time skip)
I awaited him with trepidation or was it consternation? I didn't know and frankly didn't care. I held the viral injector in my hand. Time to play my cards right into his hands.
"Ms. Lancaster isn't it about time you were ready? Let's begin." Wesker said stalking in with a smirk, Steve behind him
Red flag, he used multiple contractions. Something was wrong. This was something I would always remember about him. He rarely used contractions and when he used multiple, it meant he was seriously pissed.
"Yes, let us begin." With a swift motion, I injected the needle into my neck.
Pain and anxiety raced throughout my body, as it twisted and contorted. My nails became razor-sharp talons, my canines turned into long black fangs, bloody bat-like wings draped across my back, my hair a brilliant sliver and I formed a black visor over my eyes. Feeling the contacts dissolve and in the visors, I saw blue. It was time.
Quickly, I flew at him hands curled exposing my claws to the outside. Within seconds I was next to Wesker and while he blocked his face I grabbed his arms and flipped him onto his back. That was too easy was he holding back, why?
"Do not hold back on me now!" I shouted lifting him and attempting to throw him into a wall. Then a kick racks through my shin. I dropped to my knees as he stood up and off of me. Dusting himself off, he grabbed my neck lifting me off the ground.
"Now little trickster, show me who you are." He said throwing me into the floor face first shattering the visor against the cold polished cement floor.
I opened my eyes and dusted the debris out of them, "how long? How long did you know?" I stood up with deep blue snake eyes glowing an icy blue.
"Excella went on a trip to Russia and reported back this morning. Your eyes though are intriguing only those who are perfect bound with the..." realization dawning upon Wesker's features.
"Angelis virus, yes that's right. Have you figured it out?" I speed in front of him slamming my heel into his solar plexus, sending him into the wall.
Dust flying out from the impact, I dashed over to the corner of the room and turned out the light.
"Honey I'm home." I laughed hysterically the virus intensifying the anxiety of being found out by that stupid bitch Excella. Tears of dripping blood fell on the floor.
"There's no point in hiding, Tabitha. Come to me." Wesker said his eyes glowing in the dark room, a growl emanating from his throat.
"As you wish my dear," I said snapping. The silica particles in the air gathered around me shaping into sharp spears. With a simple flick of my wrists, I sent the spears flying in Albert's direction.
His eyes blazed behind his sunglasses. he deflected all but one spear he caught and threw it back at me.
The next thing I knew I heard a splatter and I heard Archer entering and turning on the lights. The spear was impaled through my shoulder. Blood was building up behind the blade.
"It is over my dear lotus. Now come to me." He said softly.
"Yes, captain." I hung my head causing the spear to disintegrate leaving a major hole in my shoulder. The blood that was building up burst forth and spewed from the wound causing me to fall over.
"COMMANDER!" Archer and nighthawk yelled running over to me and catching my limp body.
Steve ran over to me as I was clinging on to consciousness, "hey hanging on ok! Alistar...Tabitha, whatever your name is. I got you."
I saw Albert start to run toward me his face pale. I saw nothing but pure concern on his face. I gave a slight smile then laid completely out on the floor. I heard each drop of blood hit the floor... drip drop like seconds on the clock. Cold creeping upon me like a snake. Darkness's long tendrils snaked their way around me dragging me into the depths of unconsciousness.

march-april, 1999 drabble claire's emails to leon (@everythingheard)
there's a scooby-doo movie playing in the background, sound emitting softly and light flashing across the living room mimicking a lightening storm. it's dark out now, far past dinner time but not so late as that claire has to make sherry go to bed yet. then again, she might let the kid stay up later and put something else on before she goes to sleep because the subject matter of the movie has made claire question a great many things more than once in the last few weeks since sherry had decided she really liked the animated film.
was she still in shock? was she still having a delayed reaction to everything that she'd gone through months earlier?
sure the movie was animated but for a kid's film even for a kid that hadn't gone through the horrorscape that her and leon and sherry had.. there were parts that she imagined were scary to kids. there were sounds that had caused claire to have a moment of panic when she'd heard them from the other room not knowing their source because claire hadn't actually gotten sherry the three vhs tapes that lingered next to the television. that'd been a neighbor who'd welcomed them to the community with a basket for her and sherry that included the newest scooby-doo movie. maybe it was bad on her but once she'd seen the larger scooby-doo title, she hadn't really looked further into the rest of the vhs box at the time. but that that movie had been one that sherry chose to watch more than once? claire felt out of her depth and wasn't sure if she was reading into things more than she should. it was just a movie. an animated movie. and no, if claire was being honest, she didn't think sherry was having a delayed reaction. she still had nightmares sometimes. still had moments where she had a faraway look in her eyes before she snapped back to bubbly self.
maybe she was reading too much into it. and they weren't human zombies.. or well, they were, but they also were like.. cat people zombies and the movie had a happy ending in the end for the scooby gang. maybe that's why sherry liked it so much. because it'd had a lot happier ending than a lot of people had in raccoon. and moreover, the scooby gang had unmasked the bad guys and stopped them. yeah, maybe that was it.
email: hey secret agent man, you'll never guess what sherry's new favorite movie is... wait for it... it's scooby-doo... ...on zombie island. sincerely, claire
it's a bright day out about a week later and despite the coolness of the air, claire is sitting outside a building on her break. she's worked out a pretty sweet deal with the start up, a lot of the work at this stage was research and going over survivor interviews from the field and phone logistics. sure they had people out on the front lines of the situations too, but those people needed support from headquarters as well. they needed people on the ground in dc to lobby for them and set up meetings with people that could help the organization. and that's what claire was going to do for now, until sherry was a bit older and claire had the freedom to be more proactively in the field. some of it she could do from home with the set up they'd given her and other things at least kept her local. she wouldn't have to leave sherry for more than any other standard job and simmons had apparently run a background on the babysitter that could watch over sherry while she was gone.
claire still hadn't liked his involvement in their lives but he had seemed to use his influence to allow her to keep sherry and seemed to show some compassion over the fact sherry would have to start undergoing testing. but something still lingered in claire's gut. as if something felt out of place that she couldn't put her finger on. as if there was something she didn't know that somehow weaved everything together. not that there was anything she could do about it. but no matter how the man seemed to her, it didn't mean claire wasn't wary. it didn't mean she fully trusted him, even if she was accepting the things he set up for her and sherry because he was getting something out of it too. the testing which on the surface seemed to be to protect sherry in the long run and protect people should trace virus should be able to still pass from her. her questions linger and it only makes claire feel more lonely in her musings as she thinks about the fact that babysitter-tutor (who had seemed nice enough) was at home with sherry.
she really wanted to talk to leon but claire knew he was mostly off the grid and would be for some time now that his training was starting.
they really were just going to throw him to the wolves the second he'd agreed to join up weren't they? it puts a bitter taste into her mouth even if claire knew it was his choice to take that path. she'd heard a lot about the kinds of training the government put their operatives through both from stories on base and from malcolm who she'd met when she started at terrasave a few weeks ago who'd gone from soldier to ngo supporter after an amputated leg put him out of commission during a conflict in europe. he didn't talk a lot about it, but his tone during a lot of discussions said enough about his opinions on how things on his last mission were handled.
claire's blackberry comes out of her pocket, fingers typing away.
email: hey leon, i know you're busy so i don't expect a reply to this anytime soon. i started that job i told you about when we talked on the phone a few weeks ago. i think i can do some real good with it. sherry's started some tutoring too. that simmons guy had the tutor vetted but i'm still not sure about him. i get that he seems to only want to help sherry and he didn't have to stick his neck out there to keep her with me so she has someone she knows in her life. but after everything, i guess it's just hard to trust someone that seems so ingrained in the governmental machine. anyway, please be careful. i've heard some questionable things about some of the training programs out there. i know you'll get through with flying colors. maybe you'll put chris to shame and beat his old training stats. ;) but in all seriousness, just remember, no matter what they put you through, sherry and i are still waiting to take you to that new pizza place we found. so think of that cheesy goodness when they force mre's down your throat. sincerely, claire 'you're not gonna beat my shooting average no matter how much training you get' redfield
it's two weeks later with cartoon network playing the on the television and the smell of cookies drifting through the house that finds claire at her computer again. her gaze drifts from the slightly disheveled items that have been placed back on shelves about the space and the box of tools that sits on the table next to the computer having not been put away yet from her middle of the night crusade through the house. maybe she was paranoid. maybe she'd had a moment of absolute insanity that'd kept her up for half the night so sherry didn't see her taking most of the electronics apart and shifting through items in the house.
maybe after three months on the run only a few months back, she had a right to be.
maybe she had more of a right to after the visit she'd gotten from simmons the day before and the communications she'd had with him in the last two weeks. because he'd seemed to want to make a certain impression on her. he was trying to set her at ease. to trust him because the government wanted to start further testing now that sherry was settled. and maybe, maybe she could have fully believed in his sincerity and she acknowledged that it was possible it was all actually true.
but the timing..
it'd been right after she'd sent that email to leon and hadn't her and jill talked about the unlikelihood of coincidences just over a month ago? she had to be sure that while the house or the community or whatever was being monitored from the outside, it wasn't on the inside. she doesn't find anything in the house but it doesn't seem to make her any less wary of the whole situation. and even if it wasn't in the house it didn't mean they weren't monitoring her emails. hell, it was possible so was umbrella especially when they couldn't get their hands on her or sherry. it's why claire mentions the movie in her next email. the movie that'd given them all the idea for the message board communications when they'd been on the run and their scattered group had to communicate with each other when they thought they were being monitored.
email: hey 007, it stormed yesterday and it made me think of that night when i forced you to be my pillow and sherry fell asleep during that movie. those were the days, huh? sdfdgfdnh fghg
the email cuts off because a crash is heard and her hand accidently runs across the keyboard as she turns and gets up, the email prematurely sending. it's followed by another email timed three minutes later.
email: let's just say i fail the cookie making mom challenge. or at least the keeping cookies edible challenge. -- claire
there's a few more scattered emails which pass from her email though they don't speak to anything of importance. where does feature a post is on an old message board that leads those who know how to find it to an encrypted part of the site where he can delete her post after he reads it.
post: l-- they began testing a few days ago. they won't let me go with her. i tried. i even attempted to appeal to s' goodwill he's trying to garner with me. he's been doing that since i sent that other email. maybe it's nothing, or maybe it's something. i know i have to play nice and maybe it's all in my head. guess we'll see further down the line if he's trustworthy or not. i just hate not knowing what they're doing and she won't talk about it. she says she's fine and she understands they only want to test her to help people. she wants to help people and they are just taking blood and running some 'other tests'. but, she slept for almost twenty-four hours when she came home this last time. she's just a kid. sometimes i wish the three of us were still in that one crappy motel that had the hole in the wall that she made up that story about the mouse that went on adventures inside it. who'd have thought we'd be where we are now then? stay safe. -c
#everythingheard#muse; claire redfield#v; bprd: biohazard timeline#drabbles; claire redfield#i swear this cookie thing is gonna be the running joke of this whole verse#and it's not for lack of them being great cookies it's just that for some reason the tray always falls

I don't own any marvel characters!!
Your assistant had just called you into her room. Your week had been slow but fruitful. Normally, it would be a regular client for the month, nothing to sweat over. Your thoughts started to run over who it could be. Maybe Mr. Dean, he usually calls on a Friday but you could've sworn you saw him two weeks ago. That didn't leave a lot of your regulars left to be requesting you as you knew their schedules like the back of your hand.
As if she could read your mind upon entering her space, she spoke, "Y/N, you have a call for a new client. Something about a friend requesting your services? The only thing is..." She hesitated almost thinking if she should tell you the rest of the details before she proceeded. "Well, it's for a group. You don't have to take up the offer if you're uncomfortable with that. I can call her back and let her know you declined."
To tell the truth, the thought of it being a group of strangers did make you uncomfortable, but your assistant wouldn't put you into a situation without going through the proper protocols first. She knew a head count of how many, roughly where they all worked, and several phone numbers. It always helped to be extra safe in these situations where you could be overpowered.
"Who inquired?" you asked interestedly. "She goes by N.R., gave me a headcount of all of her friends that would be attending. There's not going to be any men there, but I guess 'more power in numbers' is still 'more power in numbers'." In all honesty, women gave you way less shit about certain things than men did. Hopefully they'd be way more understanding if you didn't want to do specific activities.
"Call her back and tell her I'll take the offer. Do you know how much she's paying?" Your assistant slid a little sticky note over to you as she dialed the number of one 'N.R.'. You swear you almost choked when you saw how much she offered for you. That was a lot of zeros compared to usual. You walked away to get a water from the mini-fridge while you vaguely listened in to your assistant's phone conversation.
Good.
Perfect.
Okay, I'll tell her to meet you there at 6:30.
Extra clothes, yes ma'am. Have a nice day.
"Hey Y/N, I've written down the address, floor, and room number. It's uh...a really high end hotel in New York City. She also said to bring an extra change of--" you interrupted her, "Extra clothes? I overheard." you started wondering what for? Dinner? Go out? "Uhm, yes, she said extra comfy clothes." Comfy? Was she expecting you to spend the night? You looked down at your watch to see how much time you had to get ready. 2 hours. It wasn't enough but you could make it work. "Alright then, I should go freshen up."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
An hour and a half later had found you briskly walking toward the extremely tall and very expensive looking hotel in the Upper East Side. You lived in Queens and while the distance wasn't very far, paired with the traffic, the feeling of unsettlement about being late to such a client was enough to make you almost hurl.
You made your way inside the lobby, barely looking at your surroundings. You wanted to get up to the room as quickly as possible without being noticed. "Excuse me," Could you ever be so lucky? "Are you here for Ms. Romanoff?" Who? That must be your clients last name. "She said she was expecting a guest soon." The lady was being extra kind to you, she had an inviting smile. You almost wanted to never lie to her. "Yes, I'm here to see Ms. Romanoff." you replied quietly. It felt like your voice would echo too hard around the warmly lit lobby. You thought it would break you to hear your own voice shrill around such a pristine room.
"Very well, I'll show you to her room." Your nerves began to spike more the higher up you went. It was as if every floor number on the elevator was the level of anxiety you started to feel. Your palms were sweating and you could've sworn your back was too. The lady just kept her eyes forward with a meek little smile. It took every fiber of your body to not explode your feelings all over that elevator.
Ding
The elevator stopped, of course she was in a penthouse suite. You rolled your eyes as how predictable this situation was playing out. The kind lady, who's name you definitely forgot to get, remained in the elevator as you walked out. "There's a number for room service if you ladies need anything." She sung out. "Thank you."
The walk to her door seemed to never end. Your feet were dragging like gravity was doing everything in its power to keep them on the ground. The air was getting hotter as time slowed in the short distance it took to reach her door. You rang the little buzzer and a melodic voice called beyond the frame.
"Coming!"
You could hear the light patter of a single set of feet. The knob then turned and revealed a stunning short redhead with bright eyes. You were certainly gawking at the sight of her but there was nothing you could do to pull your own attention away. She had a smirk on her face when she saw you staring but not saying anything. "You must be Y/N, it's very nice to meet you. Come in and lets get you introduced to everyone."
She reached out her hand to you and you took it gently. her palms were much colder than yours and her fingers were long and slender. her hair was shoulder length and fire-y. The room was massive, and clean. She had all of the blinds closed to keep any natural light and eyes from entering the den. Scanning the room some more you noticed a couple items around the room. Non-traditional furniture. It was going to be one of those events. There were also four other heads aside from the host's. She turned around once reaching the main room and faced you. "My name is Natasha, over there is Wanda," another read-head standing behind everyone else with a glass of wine in her hands, she lightly nodded, "...that is Carol in the middle," a blonde woman with a bright and bubbly smile. She seemed taller than the rest but she was also sitting down on a piece of equipment that will no doubt be used in a different way by you. Natasha gestured to a brunette, "...this is Maria," another tall and slender woman, didn't offer a smile but a simple wave to your direction. You were scared of her the most. "...and this is Yelena." A second blonde who's face was much more stoic than Maria's. You take it back, she scared you the most.
Natasha's hand unhooked from yours and made its way up your back to settle on the back of your neck. The pads of her fingers added slight pressure to the muscles there as if she could feel all of your tension in waves. You felt her lean in closer, her hot breath fanning your ear. "There's a bathroom in the hall to the right. I got a cute little outfit waiting for you." You could feel her soft lips smiling against the curve of your ear. the feeling made you shiver. You managed to follow her eyes and swiftly walk to the bathroom, closing the door behind you.
You looked around and found the outfit in question. It was sleek all black leather body suit with a halter neck. You lifted it up in your hands and rubbed the material under your fingers. Next to it sat a bottle of lubricant no doubt to get the body suit on. You got to work shedding the current clothes you had on and began to slide on the little leather number. It wasn't too tight but certainly snug against your frame. The only thing out of the ordinary besides the material was, you noticed, a tiny little zipper in between your legs. If unzipped would reveal your very private essence. The thought made you blush a little to yourself. After cleaning up, you made your way back to the room where the women had sat prior.
Since you calmed down a little, you took the opportunity to fully take in your surroundings. The hall was adorned in art more than likely as expensive as this room. Everything seemed darker than when you arrived. To your surprise when you entered the living room area, the room lighting was red as opposed to the normal LED lighting.
Natasha held her hand out to you again for you to take. You obliged her and she pulled you close into her side. Natasha's deft fingers traveled up and down your ribs before finding purchase on your backside. "You look like the most delicious treat. None of us can wait to eat you. Would you like a drink before we start?"
The other women started moving closer almost circling you like sharks. "Yes please." Natasha poured you a glass as she went on, "We should go over some rules before we start. If at any point you feel overwhelmed, anxious, or hurt, the safe word is 'Heart'. We all stop what we're doing and will help you. If at any point you are gagged, two taps to the closest person will get all of us to cease as well. Because of those rules you will not be bound and gagged simultaneously...at least not this session." She ends her rules with a wink toward you. All of these women truly were stunning and it piqued your interest to know what they could possibly be capable of.
Wanda came closest to you first, she pulled the wine glass away from your lips and replaced it with her own lips. Holding your hand with the glass close to her chest and cupping your cheek with the other. Her lips were sinfully soft as was her kiss. She felt delicate and gentle against you, she almost seemed to not match any of this situation. Natasha took your wine glass away while you continued to make out with Wanda, who let her hands roam lower down your body. Your own hands moved behind her neck. Another set of arms wrapped around you from behind. "You're such a pretty kitten." They nibbled on your ear making you separate from Wanda to see who it was. Carol smiled down at you and found the very lips that left Wanda. You moaned into her mouth at feeling how she controlled and dominated the kiss, very different from Wanda's passion. Wanda moved down to kissing your neck and shoulder.
You could hear other giggles in the back. Natasha kept her eyes trained on you as Yelena and Maria began to touch each other in the mean time waiting for you. After a few minutes of watching her friends have all of the fun, Natasha made her way over to you, Carol, and Wanda. She pulled the other red-head back by her locks and pressed her lips to hers in a searing kiss. You heard Wanda moan out into the other woman's mouth next to you causing you to release your own into Carol. This made the blonde swiftly lift you up and wrap your legs around her waist. She brought you over to a nearby bench and kissed you harder. All of the sounds you were making began to rile her up.
"I'm not sure which one of us is more excited to have you here, pretty girl. All I know is I can't wait to ruin that pretty pussy of yours." You moaned at her words and yanked her back down into another kiss. Her words went straight to your core igniting a fire that had been waiting to burn. You made a mental note to find whoever recommended you to these ladies and thank them heavenly. Carol sunk her hips between your legs and began grinding against you seeking the friction she wanted so badly.
Even though the leather was a new material to you, you could still feel the faux member that rested in her pants; Carol was packing. This caused you to move your hands down to her pants to tear the buttons away. The tall blonde grabbed your hands and smirked, "Allow me." She stood to her full height and slowly removed the black jeans she was wearing and revealed her long, girthy strap she had been hiding. Your eyes widened which made Carol giggle. She sunk to her knees where she seductively pulled the zipper on your suit down. She held your eye contact until you saw them shift to behind you. Natasha and Wanda had pulled away long enough to see what Carol was doing and decided to join again. The two red-heads began to undress themselves where Natasha also sported a rather large strap but not Wanda.
In your distraction upon noticing the other women join in, Carol took to opportunity to shove he face into your pussy. You moaned out loud at the contact. Her tongue quickly lapping at your clit and sinking lower to curl inside you. Her ministrations were making you squirm on the bench. She reached up to hold your hips down. "Stay still kitten. Gotta get you ready for our cocks." Eating you out was an art to her. Every move she made, made you more and more wet. Natasha slid her fingers into your open mouth. You sucked on them harshly slipping your own tongue in-between her fingers and coating them in your saliva. Nat removed her fingers and started to rub them between Wanda's folds.
"Eat her out for me, malysh." Natasha requested. You looked up at Wanda as she slowly lowered herself over your wanting mouth. Your head went fuzzy upon seeing all of the quiet red-head's intimacy. Your tongue immediately poked out to welcome her to you. She let out a soft moan and slowly began to grind herself against your mouth. Carol was growing impatient watching you eat out the other woman and feeling you grow more aroused in her mouth. The blonde stood to position the tip at your entrance rubbing the head up and down your slit before she slammed her length in all at once. You yelped against Wanda's soaked cunt sending vibrations straight to her clit.
The whole scene was turning Natasha on more and more so she began stroking her own member, hoping to find some friction. The other two women walked over to join the rest of the group partially feeling left out. Carol continued to slam into you at a rather fast and rough pace. The tip of her strap hitting that blissful spot inside of you with every thrust. All of your moans and whines brought Wanda closer to her orgasm. She came hard in your mouth before she got up and was replaced by Natasha's own cock.
"Suck kotenok. Mommy's getting restless." Carol did not stop chasing not only her own high but yours. You could hear her grunting from below you. All of this attention was turning you on more than you think you've ever been in your life. Even though one hand wrapped around Natasha's strap and the other gripped Carol's wrist on your hips, you were finding it hard to keep blowing Nat. Carol moved her other hand down to your clit. "You better cum for me you little slut."
And you did; hard.
Carol continued her pace and upon watching you come undone, did so herself. Three quick thrusts and she was spent. She released the most guttural moan before her body was replaced by another blonde. Yelena had this look in her eyes like she wanted to make you pay for every wrong you never committed. She removed her clothing and sat right on your bent leg. At this point Natasha was fucking your mouth deeper and deeper. Needing to ground yourself you wrapped your hands around her thighs. Yelena began to rub herself against your thigh. You could feel how wet and warm she was, her hand sliding up and down your slit collecting your cum to rub your clit in tight circles. Your whines didn't stop especially when you were already beginning to feel another orgasm approaching. Yelena slipped her fingers inside you, finding your g-spot with accuracy. With every thrust of her fingers she hit that same spot over and over. tears started to run down your face with the feeling of Natasha in your mouth and Yelena in your core. Natasha gave one last thrust before she pulled out.
Maria shoved three of her fingers to the back of your throat. She giggled when you gagged around them. Your eyes rolled to the back of your head at being finger fucked by the two women. "You're not allowed to cum before I do, else Natty here give you a nice punishment while I ride your face." Yelena only made the threat to turn you on more, but part of you was hoping it was true. It was hard, Yelena knew exactly what she was doing with her fingers but you could feel her slick slide down the sides of your thigh. God you hope she was close because you certainly were. Maria replaced her fingers with her lips and she kissed you hard sliding her tongue along yours. The brunette smiled against your lips when she felt your whimpers in her mouth. Yelena just kept slamming her fingers harder inside of you and rubbing herself quicker. Her breaths got faster and more shallow and as she came, a couple seconds later so did you. Your body shook with the most intense tremors, but Yelena couldn't fault you. She did cum before you, and something about it being in close tandem with hers turned her on a lot more than she would admit. You let out a soft whine when the coolness of the air hit your soaked thigh.
Maria left your mouth and moved between your legs. She put one leg over your left and the other under your right and brought your centers together. "You're a pretty little slut. I want to ruin you so bad." Maria started out ruthless. Her grinding was fast and hard as if she had been waiting to cum for weeks. You felt her in her entirety sliding against your own. The feeling started to overwhelm you. Carol took your face in her hand and rubbed her thumb along your bottom lip. "Open up you little slut."
You obeyed her and opened your mouth sticking your tongue out. At this point you were a blubbering mess and all the ladies were loving it. Carol spit into your mouth before shoving her cock in. "I saw you taking Nat like a pro, so I know you can take me." At least her pace wasn't rough but it certainly was quick. Your gags around Carol was making Maria closer to her release. She leaned forward to angle herself differently against you and put her hand around her throat. She could practically feel Carol's cock fucking your face. Sweat was running down your forehead and your hair clung to every part of your body it could touch. You were close to being spent and you never looked more beautiful this way. Maria's hand tightened, her grunts were heavy. "Such a good little fuck toy. I'm so close baby." You didn't think it was possible for Maria to go any harder but she did. She came with a loud cry and slowed her hips down to ride out her orgasm. You felt her wetness mix with yours. Maria's hand stayed for a couple more minutes, entranced by feeling Carol deep in your throat. The tall blonde slapped your face a couple times before she pulled out. You were too busy catching your breath, you didn't see Natasha move by your feet. She lifted you up and turned you over on your stomach with your legs and arms hanging off the bench. Just when you were hoping it was over, you forgot that Natasha never officially had her turn with you. She rested her strap on your lower back as she ran her cool hands in an attempt to soothe your burning skin. Almost mocking you for being the one to give you the final blow. Wanda walked up to you again. She ran her soft fingers in your hair and moved the stuck strands out of your face. Your breathing was heavy and your body was trembling. Wanda's fingers moved down to cup your jaw and she lifted your head. Tapping the side with her pointer finger, you got the silent request to open your mouth for her. In unison, as Wanda brought her cunt to your mouth, Natasha slid her strap inside you completely bottoming out. Nothing but incoherent noises left your mouth at being filled so sinfully. Wanda gripped your jaw harder as she rubbed her intimacy against your mouth for a second time. You lazily kept your tongue out to try your best to accommodate Wanda's wanting. Natasha on the other hand, had been waiting very patiently for her time and now that she got it she was going to make the best of it. She grabbed your hands in her own and pulled them behind your back to make it easier for her to pound deep into your cunt. When you felt her hit somehow deeper your eyes rolled back. Wanda picked up her pace just as Natasha did, both red-heads moving in perfect synch at opposite ends of your being. A jolt of paint hit your right asscheek igniting a new spark and effectively waking you up even if only for a minute. With every thrust administered, Natasha rained a hand alternating each side of your ass. All of this was sending more and more feelings to your core. You will not be lasting long if these two kept going the way they were. You could feel Wanda fumbling, she was about to come for the second time tonight. Natasha continued to get more rough inside of you until you felt the knot inside of you burst. You came hard around Natasha groaning against Wanda's own cunt. The sight caused Wanda herself to not be able to keep her composure and she came with a scream against your tongue. You felt her pussy pulsing with her orgasm on your mouth. As soon as Wanda backed away from your face, Nat yanked your arms back harder to push herself deeper than you thought was possible. You were screaming, a sweaty broken mess, absolutely spent in this five star hotel. Every thrust pushed harder against that spongey spot inside you. You could feel another earth shattering orgasm approach hoping it would be the last. Natasha's thrusting didn't let up, she was desperate to cum. She was moaning over you with every hit. You yelled her name as you came harder than you had before that whole session. Watching you absolutely spent around her
member, Natasha came just as hard with her final thrust. She stayed inside you to ride out the rest of her high before she carefully pulled out. Looking down she could see wetness all over the bench and her legs. Nat smiled to herself at being the one to make you squirt everywhere like a silent victory. Allowing you to lay and collect your bearings, the red-head began to clean up the room.
There wasn't much you could make out in your state, but you could partially hear Natasha thanking all of the women for coming over before hearing the door open and close through the ringing in your ears. Your were shaking, your whole body felt blissfully weak. The red-head padded over softly to your spent and soaked body and picked you up carefully to place you in her arms bridal style. Your mind was in a war with yourself between wanting just a little bit more or to just go to sleep. You couldn't even open your eyes at this point.
Natasha had brought you to the bathroom to help you clean up and as she moved about, she kept you in her arms. She made sure to hold you as she turned on the faucet and sit on the edge of the tub. As the water filled the tub, Nat moved between rubbing your back and gently caressing your cheek. Once the tub was filled up enough for the both of you, she picked you up again and cautiously lowered the both of you into the hot relaxing water. You couldn't do anything but mumble and cursed yourself for the state you were in even though it wasn't your fault. You desperately wanted to think your gracious host for a life changing night but nothing could come out. Natasha shushed you sweetly. Her time wasn't done until you were well taken care of in her company.
You don't know how long you were in the bathroom, hell you don't even know when you fell asleep as Natasha washed the night away from both of your bodies. Clearly still in no position to be able to make it back to your home, the red-head dried both of you off and brought you to the large bedroom. You had come back into partial consciousness long enough to feel the soft sheets and the plush comforter of this heavenly bed you were being gifted to rest on.
Natasha lowered you down and climbed on the other side before pulling you into her. She lifted your head to lay on her chest so she could easily hold you and play with your hair. She stayed awake until she heard your breathing even out again, signaling that you had fallen asleep again since the bath. She placed a soft kiss to your hairline before succumbing to sleep herself with a blissed smile on her face.
She'd definitely be requesting you again.

A/N: Idek what this is. Its literally a 4.6 k mixture of fluff, angst and comfort... I rewrote this like 4 times :,) being a perfectionist is so,,, tiring.
This takes part shortly after this, you can definitely read this without reading the 'part 1' if you will, since they don't depend on one another.
Art belongs to @aikk00 ,, and yes I am still in love with it :D
I stumble out of the lecture hall, my eyes so heavy I bump into about 3 other students and mumble my apologies until I fully wake up and snap out of my daze.
Walking down the stairs and making my way to the bus stop, I watch in horror as the bus I was supposed to be in drives off, going fast for once in its damn life as if mocking me.
Inhaling sharply through my nose, I manage to keep my composure and sit down at the bus stop, telling myself the next bus will be here in a bit.
It's fine. It's fine. I slept through the lecture, and I still have to catch up on 4 subjects and make dinner, but at least the house is clean and I'm caught up in that one subject I picked up for this exact reason.
It's fine. It's going to be just fi-
The rumble of a loud engine breaks my shitty but somewhat effective self-reassurance motto and I open my eyes to see a black and red sports car going 60 km/h in a 30 zone, effectively getting mine and everyone else's attention.
I watched in horror for the second time today as this time it stopped right in front of the bus stop. No, no, no, no.
No.
Please no.
He rolls down the passenger window with that ridiculous hair and a shit-eating grin, as he nods towards the seat, revving his engine.
I look away, pretending he's not looking directly at me and that I don't live with the guy, which I immediately regretted when he beeped the fucking horn.
What did I do to deserve this humiliation?
I hastily put my head down as he beeped it again, giving up and rushing towards his insufferable car, getting into the passenger seat and slumping in my seat to keep my head down low.
"What is wrong with you? What are you even doing here?" I hiss, my glaring up at him from my awkward, folded position.
He laughs, and when I hear the sound of a photo being taken in the split second I looked away to readjust my bag, I sit up straight, watching him continue speeding as he stuffs his phone into his pocket.
"Are. You. Trying. To. Kill. Me?!" I ask, my voice little less than a screech as I slap his arm with each word.
"Ow, ow, I just came to pick my roomie up! I sensed you needed a ride, and this is the thanks I get?" he asks, that smirk I have come to hate returning to grace his features.
I glare at him, but a small, sleep-deprived part of my brain is distracted by his appearance. A tight black tee adorning his built figure, his biceps are on display as he drives with one hand, the other resting on the gear shift. The air from his rolled down window is ruffling his hair this way and that, and I find myself wanting to run my hands through the raven strands, just as I had when I washed his hair that one time...
"Wait- how the fuck did you know I didn't have a ride?" I ask incredulously, my reaction time clearly delayed but here nonetheless.
I narrow my eyes as he hesitates before he answers, "I just knew, ok? It's not like it’s astrodynamics, not that I can't figure that out too."
"Kuroo, what the hell is astrodynamics? Are you like, spying on me or something?" I ask, pretending to look out the window so as to not get distracted by his appearance once more.
"What do you common folk call it? Rocket science?" He says, once again exceeding the speed limit.
"If I'm a commoner, does that make you a peasant? Also, stop going so fast, I feel sick and I do not feel like dying today."
He rolls his eyes in response as he slows down by a smidgen, the speed meter barely even moving. "Seriously, you may have no consideration for yourself, but I still have a lot of things to achieve with my damn life so slow the fuck down." My words finally reach the rational part in him and he slows down considerably, now going within the speed limit.
Taking a deep breath, I rest my elbow on my door and look out the window, my mind flooding with thoughts about Kuroo's reckless driving and how it can all go sour with one delayed reaction.
Before I know it, we're rolling up to our apartment building, driving into his private garage only the penthouse owners get to use.
"I'm sorry," he mutters, filling the silence in the car.
"It's ok. I just... I want you to be safe. I know its hard, but... just try," I say quietly, unable to look at him.
"That's what he said," he says hastily before rushing out of the car before I can hit him.
Getting out of the vehicle myself, I send a murderous look his way and run after his retreating form.
A small part of me is grateful that he's acting like his usual unbearable self again, but the rest of me is just mad at his relentless sex jokes.
He hits the elevator button before I can get there and I watch the doors close, his smirk practically shining through the crack of the closing doors. I jam my foot in the middle at the last possible second, and smile victoriously as I get into the metal box and slap his arm once again.
"Ooh, do it harder," he practically moans, and my eyes just about pop out of their sockets in embarrassment as my face flushes a deep red.
"Oh shut up," I mutter, turning around and waiting patiently for the doors to open on the top floor. I hear him snicker and then the sound of a photo being taken, turning around sharply. I yell in defiance and throw my bag on the floor as I jump onto him in an attempt to grab his phone out of his hand and delete the probably unflattering photo.
I straddle his back and reach for the phone he easily holds out of my reach. Leaning across his shoulder in a feeble attempt to reach it, my feet are hooked around his chest and my other hand is using his shoulder as a brace. He's laughing hard at this point, and I'm screaming at him to give me the damn phone. Neither of us notice the elevator doors opening nor the small woman standing at the threshold staring at us in shock and amusement.
"Kuroo Tetsuro! You let that poor girl down this instant, young man!"
We both froze at the authoritative voice, slowly turning to look at a small dark haired woman with a straight shoulder length cut and narrow gold eyes that were glaring at the man under me.
"MUM!" He exclaims, setting me down and running to hug and kiss the woman, his mum apparently. "What are you doing here?" I hear him ask as I straighten myself out, fixing my jumper and tucking my hair behind my ears, picking up my bag off the floor and quickly following them out of the elevator.
"What, a mother needs an excuse to come visit her boys? Where's Kenma?" She asks, looking in the elevator again as if to check if she missed him.
"Oh, he's at his own place. Apparently he has a booked in session with this famous gamer today. Did he say he'd be here?" Kuroo asks, letting go of the woman and leaning on the wall.
"No, I didn't tell anyone I was coming to visit. Never mind that, who's this pretty young lady here, hmm?" She asks, raising a perfectly shaped brow as she walks towards me, the click of her heels echoing in the lobby of the penthouse.
I smiled down at her, since she was considerably shorter than even me, and introduced myself. "It's very nice to meet you, Mrs. Kuroo." I say, bowing.
"Oh no, no, none of that. You can call me mum too, hmm?" She says, gesturing me up from my bow and pulling me down for a tight hug.
"Oh, um, actually, me and Kuroo aren't-"
"We’ll talk more comfortably inside, no? Tetsuro, is your plan to let me stand here all day?” She asks, letting me go and turning around to look at Kuroo.
Kuroo leaps into action, taking his mum's bag and unlocking the door, helping her out of her heels and leading her into the spotless penthouse.
It was all I could do to nod in response, closing the door behind us and walking down into the kitchen to prepare a meal.
It’s crazy how much I don’t know about this guy. He’d never mentioned his mother before, and briefly mentioned that he has a sister, whether older or younger I have no idea. Kenma, however, I know well. The guy was here all the time when I first started living here, but recently I've seen him less and less. Which is a shame, considering we actually got along quite well, with sharing eye rolls and bonding over our mutual love of Minecraft.
I don't notice silent footsteps following me until Kuroo's Mother says "now, why's a beautiful girl like yourself slaving away in the kitchen? Does that boy make u do all the cooking and cleaning like some mid-century housewife?"
I poke my head out of the fridge, smiling at her fair assumptions, "no, no, it's not like that at all. I actually-"
"Uh, mum! You know I'm incompetent with this stuff. This place would be a mess if she wasn't here to run things! Plus, she loves to cook and finds cleaning therapeutic. Hey, her words not mine," Kuroo quickly jumps in, putting his hands up defensively when she looks at him with a raised brow.
Looks like he doesn't want his mother to know of our little arrangement.
"Right. He's just so hopeless, I can't trust him to do anything," I add on, sending her a smile as I prepare the fish he likes.
"You're making grilled mackerel for dinner?! Oh that's gonna hit the fu- the fun spot," he says, saving himself at the last second.
I hold back a snort as I take out a pan, "open the window, fish boy. It's about to stink here and I can't be bothered with Mrs. Suzuki coming all the way upstairs just to complain about the fish smell, and then complaining that she had to come up here in the first place. God, I hope she isn't sitting on the balcony today," I ramble, trying to see her balcony from outside the window, but fail because of the private location.
Damn these amazing architects.
I hear his mum chuckle at my rambling as she begins to take out ingredients for a salad. "Oh, you don't have to help, please sit and make yourself comfortable," I say, moving towards her to take the lettuce out of her hands.
"No, no, I'd like to pitch in. Now what kind of mother-in-law would I be to let you do everything yourself?" She asks, holding the lettuce away from me and walking over to the sink.
I stare at the back of her head, a flush creeping up my neck, "m-mother-in-law?!" I ask incredulously, glancing over at Kuroo who looked suspiciously... Smug. I look away quickly when he meets my eyes, and I hastily hyper-focus on the fish in front of me, placing it on the heated pan, causing sizzling and popping to fill the awkward silence.
"I'm sorry darling, I don't mean to be overbearing. Tetsuro introduced you as his girlfriend, so I thought things were getting serious since he actually allowed us to meet one another. You see, he’s never introduced me to a girl before, so you can imagine my excitement. I can stop if you're uncomfortable-"
I cut her off, feeling even more embarrassed as I realise the role I am to play in Kuroo's life when his mother is around. I mean, it makes sense, he can't exactly just admit he took a random girl into his house.
"I, um, no really it's fine, I understand" I say, my voice small as I flip the fish.
She lets out a delighted laugh and pulls me down into a hug once more. The smile on my face is genuine as my embarrassment melts away, the bright smile of this woman comforting me.
"So, how did you guys meet?" She asks, chopping up the ingredients for her salad on the bench while I'm at the stove, Kuroo leaning on his elbows on the bench.
"At uni," I answer at the same time as Kuroo states, "at a party."
We both look at each other with wide eyes, and I clear my throat to clarify, "at a uni party. A classmate of ours hosted one and we met each other there."
"I see, so the old boozed up one night stand turned into quite a domestic relationship hmm?" she suggests, wiggling her eyebrows at Kuroo.
"What? No, no, I would never! A one night stand? Booze? Please, what kind of man do you take me for?" Kuroo complains, looking offended.
I turn around towards the stove and roll my eyes. I've heard the rumours around campus, practically every girl in my lecture hall can testify to at least making out with the man. He really puts up a façade for his mum.
I hear the doorbell ring, and quickly take the fish off the stove to go answer it as Kuroo bickers with his mother about how innocent he really is.
"Hello? Who is it?" I ask, pressing the buzzer.
"Uh, hello? Is this Tetsu's place?" A deep voice answers. I look at the camera, seeing Kenma and a bunch of men about Kuroo's age looking confused. The one who answered is a guy with a blond mohawk and piercings adorning both ears.
"Yes, just give me a second," I reply. "Kuroo, I think Kenma and the rest of your friends are here? Should I let 'em up?" I shout out.
"Yeah let 'em in," he calls back. I press another button, letting them into the lobby.
I need to make more food.
Quickly taking out my frozen dumplings I stocked up for emergency dinners for days I couldn't be bothered to make anything better, I whip up a quick sauce, thinking I could split the fish and put it in the middle of the table so everyone can take their share.
"I do apologise darling, I let my Kenma know that I came to visit and he must have told the boys. I think they've all come to see me," Kuroo's mum confesses.
"You must be a very loved woman if they came all this way to see you. And it's no worries really, I'm always prepared for guests," I say, putting her at ease.
She beams at me as the door is banged loudly.
Kuroo mutters something about “rude assholes'' as he goes to open the door, a group of tall men making their way through the threshold.
"Hiya cap'ain," the mohawk guy says, patting Kuroo on the back. A tall, light brown haired man was next to greet him, then proceeded to exclaim "MUMMA KOZUME!!" and practically jumped onto the poor woman.
Wait, did he just say Kozume? Isn't Kenma's surname Kozume?
"Hey mum," Kenma greets, kneeling down to hug Kuroo's mum.
Who's mum is this lady?! I swear to god I'm going to go crazy.
"Hello hello everyone," A massive grey haired guy says, kissing Kuroo's mum on the cheek and hugging Kuroo.
The last guy to greet them is a tan guy with a buzz cut, and he does the same as his friend before.
"So Kuroo, when di'ja get yourself a girl, huh?" The grey haired guy asks, looking offended that he didn't know before now.
I raise my eyebrows as Kuroo just smiles guiltily. He introduces me to his friends and I wave hello, as they all begin to introduce themselves.
The grey haired guy says his name is Lev and that he's half Russian. A weird detail to include but interesting I guess.
The light brown haired man introduces himself as Yaku, and says that he was Kuroo's senpai back in high school.
"Yeah a demon senpai," Kuroo mutters in reply. My smile quickly turns into a grimace as Yaku jumps on him and they both start brawling on the floor, making a loud ruckus. A loud thumping can be heard from downstairs as Mrs. Suzuki starts to lose her mind and continues to bang the handle of her broom to her ceiling.
"Ugh, you morons upset Mrs. Suzuki! She's going to talk my ear off next time I see her..." I complain, grabbing a cushion and throwing it at the boys.
They flinch at my anger and quickly get up, muttering a quick apology. My glare softens as mohawk introduces himself as Yamamoto, and the tan guy says his name is Kai whilst vigorously shaking my hand.
"It's very nice meeting all of you. Dinner will be ready in a bit so please just make yourselves comfortable," I announce, making my way back into the kitchen.
The boys, all sporting grins, make their way to the living room and sit on the couches, man-spreading and slouching all over the place, one person taking up the usual spot for two.
I sigh, focusing on the dumplings in front of me.
I stiffen as I feel large hands on my waist, and a presence behind me. Visibly relaxing once I realise it's Kuroo, I turn around, his hands still resting on my hips, and his face nestled in the crook of my neck.
"Please just go along with it. We have to act like a couple if they're going to believe us," he mutters, his hot breath causing shivers to run up my spine.
I simply nod, instinctively placing my arms around his neck and running my fingers through his hair, something I've wanted to do since that day.
He groans into my neck, and I find myself holding my breath as I continue my hand movements.
"OI LOVEBIRDS! MUM SAYS THE DUMPLINGS ARE GONNA FUCKIN' STICK! Ow! Oh, sorry," I snatched my hands back from Kuroo, pushing his chest, my cheeks flushing in embarrassment.
What the fuck am I doing?!
I turn around back to the stove, mixing the dumplings in the boiling water as my thoughts race.
That felt too real, too much like a real relationship.
And way too addicting, apparently, since I already miss his close proximity.
The warmth on my waist disappears as I hear Kuroo running back into the living room.
"SHUT UP YOU MORON, THE DUMPLINGS ARE FINE!" I hear him scream, and then a loud thud as he presumably tackles whoever yelled at us to the ground.
I sigh as I hear Mrs. Suzuki's muffled thuds from downstairs in record time.
"You know I'm going to have to make Mrs. Suzuki some kind of apology cake because you boys can't sit down and act like adults," I complained, my arms crossed and an unimpressed expression on my face.
Lev and Yamamoto are on the floor playing some kind of Connect 4 game I've never seen before, while Kai looks to be having a deep conversation with Kuroo's mum, who is perched on the single arm chair like the queen she is.
Kenma is hogging the tv playing some kind of video game on Kuroo's ps5 (which I've hogged on more than one occasion), and Kuroo on the other hand has Yaku in a headlock.
He immediately lets go and apologises, and so does Yaku, who even bows in his regret.
I roll my eyes and shake my head at his mum, who just laughs, and I make my way back into the kitchen, setting food on the table and calling them in to eat.
After dinner, I find myself showered in compliments and not a bite of dinner leftover for tomorrow's lunch. Damn I'm good.
I served up cake I had already prepared from earlier along with fruits I washed and set on plates, and watched as that was eaten and finished before I even sat down. Kuroo's mum scolded the boys for poor manners, and they all apologised. Well, all except Kuroo, who just wiggled his pierced brows and winked at me.
I sit down on the floor next to the couch, since it was all occupied, and hear a dissatisfied sound coming from Kuroo's mum.
"Now, now, sweetheart. You don't have to be shy around me, just go on and take your usual seat next to Tetsuro," she says, nudging her head in Kuroo's direction, where the only vacant spot was literally his lap.
I look at her with wide eyes, even Kuroo seems taken aback by her suggestion, and all the boys are immaturely ‘oohing’ loudly as they laugh and make fun of us.
Kuroo makes a gesture for me to come next to him, so I hold back my heavy sigh, try my best to hide the flush on my face, and walk towards him, awkwardly perching on his knee.
He chuckles as he grabs my waist and pulls me flush towards his chest, my butt in the corner of the couch and my legs resting diagonally over his, so that my head is directly in the crook of his neck.
I hate to say it, but this is actually really damn comfortable.
Conversation has started up again, but it becomes secondary to the beat of his heart right under my ear, and my eyes start to get heavy as his scent and warmth lull me to a comfort that is beyond being awake and alert.
---
Kuroo's POV
"What a cute girl she is, Tetsu. I'm so glad you've found her. And now that you've got her, you better. Not. Let. Go." She says, slapping me on the arm with each word of her last sentence.
What is it with women and slapping me?
"Ok, ok, I know mum, I won't stuff this up. I promise," I respond, smiling at her.
"Ok, well, I'm staying over at Kenma's house. Ah, no objections. You've already got your hands full, and I don't want to be in the way of young love. Plus, I'd rather listen to Kenma's midnight streams than you two in the middle of the night," she says, not accepting my objections and giving me a knowing look. My face warms to what she's insinuating, and I mutter a quick, "it's not like that," as I duck my head into Y/n's shoulder.
By this time the boys have all left, Kenma's downstairs waiting in his car for his mum to come, but she insisted on staying back for a few minutes to talk to me.
Y/n fell asleep a while ago now, still nestled on my lap, her head on my shoulder and her figure keeping me warm.
"I know exactly how it is, my darling. I've seen how you two act, pretending to be in a relationship just so we don't ask any uncomfortable questions. I won't meddle in your life, I never did, Tetsuro. But I will give you advice I expect you to consider. Don't let her go. Neither of you were pretending about your feelings towards each other, let me tell you that much." She says, knowingly looking at me.
I look up in alarm, which quickly morphs into a nervous laugh. She's good, I'll give her that much.
But, can Y/n really mirror my feelings?
"Ok darling, better not leave Kenma waiting any longer. I'll visit again tomorrow, or you can come over to Kenma's, whichever you prefer as long as she comes along too. I want to get to know my future daughter-in-law better!!"
With that, the woman who took me in and treated me like her own left my home.
I look down at my roommate, taking in the way her lashes are long enough to brush against her face, the way her brows are just a tad bit asymmetrical, the stroke of her nose and the bend of her cupid's bow.
I can't help but bring my hand up to caress the side of her face, content to stay here forever.
Mum would've loved her.
This thought broke the dam that held back my tears since middle school, and as they fell down my face I couldn't help but think of my own mother, coming in and hugging her, making her famous pie that I can't remember the taste of anymore. A sob racks my figure and I all of a sudden find a pair of e/c eyes staring up at me, my tears having dampened some parts of her face.
Wordlessly, she straightens herself and wraps her arms around my neck, running her fingers through the back of my head, stroking down towards my nape and up again. I cry into her shoulder, tears that I've bottled up, emotions I've ignored because I've had my dad, my grandparents and the Kozume's. Later, I even had the team, and they all followed me to the racing gig, a place where I can express my emotions through the reckless driving that could claim my life any second. I should have been grateful. Instead, the pain of her absence never ceased.
I clutch the back of her sweatshirt as I cry and cry and cry, eventually tiring myself out and running out of tears.
With dry sobs still racking my body every few minutes, she finally leans back, cupping my face in her gentle hands.
"What's the matter, Kuroo?" She whispers, looking up at me with tears shining in her own eyes. "You can tell me anything, or you can say nothing at all. Either way, I'm here for you. I'll always be here for you," she says, touching her forehead to mine and closing her eyes. She stays here for a moment before moving to get up and drag me up too.
"Come on, let's get you into your pjs and into bed. It's getting late."
---
Your POV
Now in his usual shorts and singlet, I drag him to his massive bed, opening the neatly made bed and gently sit him down.
His hazel eyes follow me as I go to close the curtains, his lashes still wet from the countless tears he shed, his body still hiccupping with dry sobs.
Once I've put his blankets around him, I go to leave, muttering a goodnight as I leave.
"Y/n," I hear before I close the door. I peek my head in, "please stay."
Without a pause to think about his request, and already in my own pyjamas, I go next to him and crawl into his open arm as if I've been doing it every night, snuggling into his shoulder once more and wrapping my arm around his chest.
After a few moments of silence, he begins to speak in a raspy tone, "she's not my real mum. She's Kenma's mum, and I've... I've called her mum since I was around 7," he takes a deep breath before continuing. "I moved in with my dad and grandparents next door to the Kozumes when I was 6. I was nervous and shy back then. You wouldn't even recognise me because of the 180 turn my personality's taken. Kenma was even more social than I was. He was my first friend, and when I got him into volleyball and we met Coach Nekomata. That man inspired me to be the man I am today, and was the main reason why I joined the volleyball team in high school, and made friends with the guys. He did what my mum should've, supported me and gave me the confidence to live my life," he says, his voice cracking with the last word. I hug him tighter, knowing not to say anything as of yet.
"I just wish... I wish she didn't go. I wish she could've met you, Y/n. She would've loved you even more than Kenma's mum does," he confesses with a chuckle, sniffling and turning towards me to look me in the eyes.
"She would've seen the way I was around you. The different man I become. You make me a better person, Y/n. I find myself wanting to be better for you. I could never thank you enough for that. Please, never leave. Just stay with me, and I'll always be here for you," he says, repeating the same words I said to him earlier.
I can't help the smile from taking over my features and I lean in to kiss his nose, his eyes, his cheeks and finally I press my lips against his, something I have been wanting to do for a very long time.
"I will, Kuroo Tetsuro. I'll always stay with you."
A/n: So, I don't actually know if his mum passed away or if she left them, so I kind of just,, did both ?

“Repeat after me,” instructed the minister, standing before the bride and groom. “I, Rowan…”
“I, Rowan,” the silver-haired man repeated.
“Take thee, Lyria…”
“Take thee, Aelin…”
Shocked gasps spread through the chapel as it took Rowan a moment to realize his mistake. Eyes flying wide, he gripped Lyria’s hand tighter who was staring at him in disbelief.
“Lyria. Lyria.” Rowan emphasized with a forced chuckle.
Stunned, the minister leaned toward Lyria before asking hesitantly, “Shall I go on?”
From her seat a few aisles back, Aelin gaped as she listened to Rowan. He said her name. Her name.
It had to mean something, right? A groom doesn’t just same the wrong name during his wedding for no reason, right? Did he still want her? Love her? Like she loved him?
“He,” Aelin stuttered, leaning forward to whispering the ear of the woman sitting in front of her, “he said Aelin, right? Do you think I should go up there?” The woman didn’t pay her any attention, focused on the scene at the head of the chapel.
The minister was still waiting on Lyria to respond as she tried not to meet the eyes of people looking on with surprise and pity.
“Yes, yes, do go on.” She decided, forcing a calm expression over her humiliation and anger.
The minister nodded and announced, “I think we’d better start again. Rowan, repeat after me. I, Rowan…”
Rowan cleared his throat and said, “I, Rowan,”
“Take thee, Ly-ri-a” the minister dragged out the woman’s name as if speaking to a child.
Rowan shot an exasperated glare at the officiant but looked down at the brunette and repeated, “Take thee, Lyria.” She glared at him and forced another chuckle from his lips as he turned towards the guests and joked, “Like there’d be anybody else.”
Even Aelin cringed at the horrible attempt at humor, but it was no match for the way Lyria was glaring daggers at him.
“As my lawfully wedded wife, in sickness and in health, till death parts us.” The minister continued.
“As my lawfully wedded wife, in sickness and in health, until death parts us.” Rowan leaned in closer, “Really, I do. Lyria.”
People were still muttering as the minister asked for the rings.
“Lyria, place this ring on Rowan’s finger as a symbol of your bond everlasting.”
Rowan flinched as she jammed the ring forcefully onto his finger.
“Rowan, place this ring in Lyria’s hand as a symbol of the love that encircles you forever.”
“Happy to.” He chirped and gave her the ring.
Aelin, and everyone else, watched what seemed to be a train wreck unfolding as the minister declared, “Rowan and Lyria have made their declarations and it gives me great pleasure to declare them husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
People visibly winced as Rowan bent to kiss Lyria and she turned away from him only allowing him to brush his lips against her cheek. She escaped down the aisle, refusing to grab Rowan’s outstretched hand.
Aelin thought she heard Lyria mutter Just keep smiling to Rowan as they passed by.
Fenrys was standing next to Lorcan near the other bridesmaids and groomsmen. He nudged the taller man in the ribs and quipped, “Well, that went well.”
Lorcan glared down at the blond and rolled his eyes, “It could’ve been worse,” he suggested sarcastically, “he could’ve stabbed her.”
***
Aelin stood with Elide, Lorcan, and Fenrys in the lobby of the reception hall as they watched Rowan try to coax Lyria out of the bathroom she’d locked herself in. They could hear her shouting at him through the door.
“You’ve ruined everything!” she called out, furiously, “This is a nightmare! My friends and family are out there! How can I face them? How can you do this me?”
The group cringed as other guests look toward the scene.
Fenrys watched them a moment before asking, “No matter what happens with Rowan and Lyria, we still get cake right?”
Lorcan snorted as Rowan tried to open the door again, “All right Lyr, you take your time sweetie. I’ll be right out here.” He plastered a fake cheerful smile on as he noticed his friends watching him with pity, “She just fixing her makeup.”
“I hate you!” Lyria screamed through the door.
“And, I love you!” he called.
Rowan walked back towards his friends. Fenrys, trying to lighten the mood, teased “Man, bad time to say the wrong name, huh?” He wiggled his eyebrows even as Rowan fixed him with an incredulous glare.
“Thanks, Fen,” Rowan muttered as he clipped Fenrys on the back of the head. Then Rowan sighed and looked around at the depressing reception hall and tried to put on a happy face that came across as more of a grimace. “People should be dancing; this is a party!” Rowan whirled back towards Fenrys and urged, “Come on Fen, dance!”
Fenrys looked around at the empty dancefloor and his friends waiting patiently as he tried to dance in the music-less space for a moment before giving up and walking away.
***
Across the room, Lyria’s mother answered her ringing phone.
“Yes? Who is this?”
“Uh, hello, this is Rowan Whitethorn’s personal physician, Dr. Shifter.”
In New York, Lysandra cringed at the obviously fake accent she was attempting but pushed forward. After making Fenrys keep his phone on during the wedding ceremony and hearing Rowan’s horrible fumble, she was trying to help them fix the situation. To her and Aedion’s disappointment, they couldn’t attend the wedding due to Lysandra’s pregnancy; she was due any day now and was instructed not to fly. So, she’d have to help with damage control from across the pond.
“Who?” the older woman asked.
“Yes,” Lysandra insisted, deepening the ridiculous accent, “I’ve discovered Rowan forgot to take his…” she trailed off and Aedion prompted brain medicine, “brain medicine.” She winced at how horrible of an excuse that was, “uh, now without it, uh, in the brain of Rowan, uh women’s names are interchangeable, through…through no fault of his own.”
Lyria’s mother sighed, exasperated, “Oh my Gods, Lysandra.”
Lysandra winced again, her fake accent was as horrible as she thought.
“No, not Lysandra, Dr. Shifter.” Lysandra insisted and then exclaimed, “Oh no! You have it, too!”
The next thing Lysandra heard was the dial tone as the woman hung up.
***
Elide stood by the buffet table, filling her plate when she felt Lorcan come up next to her.
“Hey,” He said in a low voice.
She glanced up at him to find him already looking at her, “Hi.”
He looked apologetic, almost nervous, in a way he normally wasn’t, and rubbed the back of his neck. “Wow, uh, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but, I know we had plans to meet up tonight and,” he stumbled over his words again as they both flashed back to the night before.
Lorcan opened the door to his hotel room to see Elide standing there.
“Hey, El, what’s up?” he stepped aside to let her in. Lorcan watched as she looked around the room, identical to her own, he was sure, and turn to face him.
He blamed it on the jetlag and the craziness of the day, but he couldn’t stop himself from admiring her. She was beautiful, and intelligent, and funny. She was also one of his best friends. Normally, he pushed down any feelings that weren’t ‘best friend’ feelings—feelings that made him want to throw caution to the wind and kiss her.
“Hey,” she said, looking at him through her lashes. “Is Fenrys here?”
Lorcan shook his head and saw relief flash across her face as he said, “Last time I saw him, he was heading out the door with that one bride’s maid and a bucket of strawberries.”
Elide raised a brow and snorted. “Sounds about right.”
He hummed in agreement, “You okay? You’re not still thinking about what that idiot told you, are you?”
That idiot being the stumbling, drunk man who’d bumped into Elide, spilled half his drink on her, looked at her and then her dress that she adored, and declared the stain an improvement, before walking away and leaving her to replay the insult in her head.
She snorted again, but it lacked any amusement. “What? You mean the jibe about how I looked better covered in scotch?” she sighed and looked away, “Whatever. I was obviously wrong about this dress.”
She looked down, but he grunted his disagreement, making her glance back up.
“What?” She questioned, confused at the look he was giving her.
“Ignore him,” Lorcan insisted, “I mean, you were the most beautiful person in the room tonight.” He told her, immediately wishing he hadn’t said that because that didn’t sound like a ‘best friend’ feeling.
But, instead of looking at him weirdly, she stepped closer and her eyes were…hopeful?
“Really?”
He cleared his throat but closed the distance between them, “Are you kidding? You’re the most beautiful woman in most rooms.”
Elide surged forward and kissed him.
It was perfect, it was Elide, it was—
“Whoa,” Lorcan pulled back and stared at her in disbelief, “What’s going on? You and I just kissed! You and I are kissing?” his brain couldn’t catch up.
“Well, not anymore.” She mumbled.
He searched her face, “How drunk are you?”
She offered him a smile, “Drunk enough to know that I want to do this. Not so drunk that you should feel guilty about taking advantage.”
Even through her quip, he could see the sincerity, and something else, something he couldn’t pinpoint, in her eyes.
“That’s the perfect amount!”
Then their lips connected again, and hands were moving, and suddenly they were on the bed.
Elide leaned back and Lorcan hovered over her as she broke away and said, “You know what’s weird?”
“What?” Lorcan trailed kisses down her neck and she shivered.
“This doesn’t feel weird.” She breathed.
He removed his mouth from her skin and looked into her face. She was right, this didn’t feel weird. It felt right.
Grinning, they both leaned back in and enjoyed a very satisfying night.
The next morning, Elide woke up in a hotel room with a large, warm body pressed against her. She smiled, thinking about what she and Lorcan did. And did. And did. Turning in his arms, she found he was already awake and watching her.
“Good morning” she yawned
He smirked, “G’morning.”
They spent who-knows-how-long lazily kissing until a loud knock sounded at the door.
Panicking, Elide’s wide eyes met Lorcan’s and she ducked beneath the covers just as Rowan barged into the room.
“I’m getting married today!” she heard from her position tucked into Lorcan’s side, the blankets soon becoming suffocating.
Lorcan’s hand snuck under the cover to rest in her hair as he slumped down in the bed, trying to make it less obvious that Elide was there. “Morning, Whitethorn.”
Elide heard Rowan close the door as he left and she popped back up, her hair in complete disarray, as she glanced at a now smirking Lorcan “Do you think he knew I was here?”
She’d left to get ready for the ceremony soon after that. Just before she needed to get to her seat, Lorcan casually found her and pulled her aside. Clearing this throat, he said, “What we did last night was...” he trailed off, not knowing what to say.
“Stupid.” She offered.
“Totally stupid.” He agreed, nodding.
“What were we thinking?” She asked, fixing the sleeve of her dress.
They lapsed into silence a moment, neither looking at the other, before Lorcan asked, “I’m coming over tonight though, right?”
“Oh yeah, definitely.” Elide confirmed and subtly winked as she walked to her seat.
Lorcan kept talking, drawing them both back into the present, “I’m kind of worried about what it might do to our friendship.”
Elide sighed, “I know,” She glanced around and asked him worriedly, “How could we have let this happen?”
She didn’t regret the previous night, if anything, it was the fact that she didn’t regret it that alarmed her. She valued her friendship with Lorcan so much and hoped that whatever this was didn’t mess that up. Even though they both seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, a fact she was reminded of as he added, “Seven times.”
She allowed a smirk and she saw it mirrored on his own mouth.
“Well, you know, we were away…” She tried to justify.
Lorcan nodded eagerly, “In a foreign, romantic country…”
Elide hummed in agreement, “I blame London.”
“London,” Lorcan grunted disapprovingly.
They looked at each other for a long moment before Elide said, “So um, while we’re still in London,” Elide watched as Lorcan raised a brow, waiting for her to continue, “I mean, we can keep doing it right?”
Lorcan suppressed a grin. “Well, I don’t see that we have a choice. But, when we’re back home, we don’t do it.”
Elide nodded, though part of her didn’t want to think that far ahead, “Only here.”
Lorcan stepped closer to her, towering over her shorter frame, “You know, I saw a wine cellar downstairs—”
“I’ll meet you there in two minutes.”
Elide didn’t miss the wide smirk he flashed her before he disappeared around the corner.
She counted to one hundred and was just about to follow Lorcan out when Aelin rushed up to her side.
“El, I have to ask you something,” Aelin said desperately.
As much as Elide loved Aelin and wanted to help her, she knew Lorcan would be in the wine cellar now waiting for her to join him.
“Now?”
Aelin didn’t catch the impatience in Elide’s question. “El, Rowan said my name up there. I mean, come on, I can’t just pretend that didn’t happen, can I?”
“Oh, I don’t know.” This was definitely a conversation she wished they were having any other time.
Aelin urged Elide for advice, “Elide, what should I do?”
“Just, uh, do the right thing.”
“What?” Aelin asked, clearly upset Elide wasn’t giving her her full attention.
Normally, Elide would be offering advice and suggestions, making sure Aelin didn’t do something too insane, but at the moment she couldn’t keep her mind from wandering back to the night before and the feel of Lorcan’s hands on her, as she babbled, “Toe the line, thread the needle, Think outside the box!”
Elide tried slipping away but Aelin stopped her again, “Whoa, wait,” Aelin sighed, “I think I’m just going to talk to Rowan about what he thinks it meant.”
Elide halted and turned back towards her friend. “Aelin, wait” the blonde met her eyes, and Elide said regretfully, “No, he’s married. Married. If you don’t realize that, I can’t help you.”
Aelin closed her eyes and nodded, “Okay, you’re right,” as Aelin opened her eyes Elide offered a small, sad smile. Her smile dropped as Aelin whipped around and finished, “You’re right, you can’t help me.”
Elide rolled her eyes but finally left to find the wine cellar. She wandered for a little while before she found the cellar, but no Lorcan.
Making her way back to the reception hall, she saw him back at the refreshment table.
“Where were you?” she hissed, “We were supposed to meet in the cellar.”
“Forget it, that’s off.” He told her under his breath.
“Why?” Elide asked incredulously
Almost as if he heard her question, Lyria’s very drunk father wandered into the hall and slurred loudly, “The next tour of the wine cellar will plan in two…in two minutes.”
Elide cringed and shared a nod with Lorcan as Fenrys walked up to them with a large steak on his plate.
“Fen,” Elide demanded, “what are you doing? You promised Lysandra you wouldn’t eat meat until she had the baby!”
Lysandra, ever the animal lover, had been a vegetarian for as long as Elide had known the woman. To Lysandra’s horror, one of her pregnancy cravings was meat, and as much as she tried, she couldn’t help but give in. After an almost meltdown, Fenrys offered to abstain from eating meat for the duration of her pregnancy so that she could and, as Lysandra’s argument, no additional animals would be harmed. When Elide tried to question why Fenrys was doing this and not, say, Aedion, Aedion cut her off before Lysandra could hear the suggestion.
Fenrys looked between Elide and his steak, “Well, I figured we’re in another country, so it doesn’t count.”
Elide met Lorcan’s eyes and they shared a secret grin
“That’s true,” she conceded.
“The man’s got a point,” Lorcan agreed.
***
Aelin found Rowan hovering outside the bathroom door.
“Hey,” she said gently.
He startled but offered her a small, strained smile, “Hi.”
“Sorry things aren’t working out so well.” Aelin winced, unable to think of anything better to say.
Rowan shook his head and forced a laugh, “Oh no! It could be better,” he nodded and then looked towards her anxiously and asked, “but’s going to be okay, right?”
Aelin hated this. She hated having to stand here with the man she was desperately in love with and reassure him that his marriage to another woman would be alright. And as much as she honestly doubted it—because what woman wants to hear her fiancé say another woman’s name at the alter—Rowan was first, and foremost, her friend.
“Oh yeah!” She said as cheerfully as she could manage, “Of course, I mean, she’d gonna get over this, you know?” Aelin hoped not but refrained from saying that given Rowan’s dejected face. “I mean, so you said my name, you probably just said it because you saw me there. If you’d have seen a hawk in the window, you would’ve said, ‘I take thee, hawk.’
She internally cringed but Rowan nodded, reassuring himself.
Aelin went on, “You know it didn’t mean anything, it was just a mistake.” She pressed closer and allowed a sliver of hope to show in her eyes as she asked again, hoping he would disagree with her, “It didn’t mean anything, right?”
After a second’s hesitation that she may have just imagined, Rowan’s brows furrowed and he insisted, “No! No, of course, it didn’t mean anything.” He glanced towards the door then back to Aelin. “I mean, I can understand why Lyria would think it meant something, you know, because…because it’s you…” he trailed off and Aelin briefly saw highlights of their relationship flash before her eyes.
The museum dates, the love confessions, the times with their friends. She saw them break apart and mend back together. She saw a new friendship bloom, and her own feelings of love resurface even as he found happiness somewhere else.
She cleared her throat, bringing herself back to the moment, “Right.”
Stepping closer to the closed door, Rowan yelled “It didn’t! It didn’t mean anything!”
Aelin was prevented from saying something stupid as Fenrys approached and told Rowan, “Rowan, hey man, the band’s ready outside for your first dance with Lyria,” Fen trailed off as Rowan glared at him.
“Oh, oh, the band’s ready?” Rowan asked with fake interest. “Well, I—we have to do what the band says,” he whirled on Fenrys and shouted, “I don’t care about the stupid band!”
Fenrys shot Rowan an annoyed glace and wiped his face, “You spit on me, man.”
Rowan muttered a sorry before Fenrys asked, “Lyria is kind of taking a long time, huh?”
A memory surfaced in Aelin’s mind and she laughed, “You know, when I locked myself in the bathroom at my wedding,” she paused as the horrid image of Arobynn appeared but faded away as she looked back at Rowan, “it was because I was trying to pop the window out of its frame.”
The guys chuckled at the thought of Aelin maneuvering an outrageous wedding dress through a window.
“Had to get the hell out of there, you know?” she chuckled, too, before all three of them abruptly stopped and whipped their heads around to the bathroom door.
Oh shit.
“Lyria!” Rowan banged on the door, “Lyria, I’m coming in.”
Rowan threw the door open and he, Fenrys, and Aelin took in the empty bathroom, open window, and curtain flying in the wind.
“Well, look at that,” Aelin observed, “same thing.”
***
Elide and Lorcan escaped the reception hall amidst the chaos of a missing Lyria. They hastily made it to Elide’s room, hands clasped the entire way as Lorcan pulled her down the hall.
Laughing, she opened the door, fully ready to haul Lorcan towards the bed, but froze as she caught sight of Aelin sitting on her bed.
“Oh my Gods, Aelin! Hi.” Elide yelped, feeling Lorcan stumble into her as he froze, too.
He cleared his throat, “Oh, hey Aelin.” The fake calm tone he used to mask his irritation sounded too high for his ears, enough so that Aelin raised a brow at him before shaking her head and dismissing him.
Aelin didn’t wait for either of them to say another word as she exclaimed, “Rowan said my name. Okay?” She moved to sit on the edge of the bed with a slightly frantic look in her eye. “My name. Rowan said my name up there, that obviously means that he still loves me!”
Aelin looked back and forth between Elide and Lorcan desperately hoping one of them would validate what she said, but they stared at her in silence. She rolled her eyes and huffed a breath, “Fine, don’t believe me. I know I’m right.” She pointed a finger at the pair before running a hand through her hair, “Do you guys want to go downstairs and get a drink?”
At her inquisitive stare Lorcan said, “Yes, we do,” and as Elide shot him a look, he added, “But, we have to change first.”
Elide nodded vigorously, “Yes, I want to change. Why don’t you go down and get us a table?”
Aelin looked at her weirdly, but nodded as Elide told her, “We’ll be down in ten minutes.”
Lorcan subtly squeezed her shoulders and corrected, “twenty minutes.”
Lorcan didn’t miss the quick, approving look Elide shot him, or the subtle wink that Aelin was too preoccupied to notice.
The blonde hummed in agreement and grabbed her bag, “Okay, sure.”
Just as Aelin was about to leave, the phone at the bedside table started ringing. Answering, she asked, “Hello?”
Lorcan stifled an irritated groan.
“Oh Lys!” Aelin faced Elide and Lorcan as she settled down into the bed, “It’s Lysandra.”
“Great,” Elide mumbled and forced a smile as Lorcan didn’t hold back his next annoyed grunt.
Ignoring Aelin’s conversation and taking advantage of her distraction, Lorcan leaned down to say into Elide’s ear, “Hey, why don’t we go change in my room?”
She turned towards him with her brows furrowed, “But my clothes are—” her brows shot up as she caught the dark gleam in his eye, “Oh.”
At her answering smirk, he grabbed her hand and pulled her from the room.
***
Once Lorcan made sure Fenrys wasn’t in their shared room, he pulled Elide inside and locked the door.
His hands gripped her hips, pulling her towards him as her hand found its place in the collar of his shirt before wrapping around his neck and pulling him for a searing kiss.
Lorcan wound a hand in her hair and pulled back enough to look at her in her dress, “El, you look—”
She smirked, but said, “No time for that,” and went back to trying to get his shirt off. Their hands roamed each other’s bodies hungrily until a loud knock sounded at the door.
They pulled away as Fenrys’ voice called out, “Hey, dude,” Lorcan closed his eyes and released a slow breath, trying to reign in his fraying temper, “let me in. I’ve got a girl out here!”
Lorcan swore as he heard giggling from the hallway, and glanced at Elide whose hair was now fluffed from where his hands had run through it, and her dress that was scrunched at her hip.
“Well, I’ve got a girl in here.”
Fenrys scoffed, “No you don’t, I just saw you go in there with Elide.”
Elide huffed and Lorcan said through gritted teeth, “Well, we’re…we’re hanging out in here.”
“Look,” Fenrys insisted again, “Which one of us is gonna be having sex in there, me or you?”
It took all of Lorcan’s willpower not to reach through the door at throttle Fenrys as he growled menacingly, “I guess I’d have to say you.”
***
Realizing that neither of their rooms were going to grant them any privacy, Elide and Lorcan went to the one place they knew wouldn’t be occupied tonight.
The honeymoon suite.
“Do you really think this is okay?” Elide asked. As much as she wanted to rip Lorcan’s clothes off and climb on top of him, she suddenly felt guilty about using Rowan and Lyria’s suite. Not that they would be using it.
As if hearing her thoughts, Lorcan muttered, “Well, Rowan and Lyria aren’t gonna use it.”
“I know, I just—” she bit her lip and looked around, “I don’t know if I feel right about this.”
Lorcan stopped trying to remove the excruciating number of throw pillows and walked towards elide. “El, El, El,” he murmured, grabbing her face in his hands, “this is the honeymoon suite.”
“Exactly.” She retorted.
He rolled his eyes, “This room expects sex.” He chuckled at her raised brow but said, “The room would be disappointed if it didn’t get sex. All of the other honeymoon suites would think it was a loser.”
She snorted, “You’re an idiot.” The insult did have any of her usually bite.
He grinned, “Maybe, but I’m an idiot you want to fuck. And now we have an unoccupied room.”
Elide rolled her eyes but grinned back, “Okay.”
“Okay.”
They’d just reached the bed when the door flew open and Lorcan barely contained a long string of curses.
“Lyria?” Rowan called, his eyes scanning the room.
Elide shot Lorcan a look and asked Rowan, “You haven’t found her?”
Rowan groaned, “No, I’ve looked everywhere!”
Lorcan, very helpfully, responded, “Well, you couldn’t have looked everywhere or else you would’ve found her!”
Elide almost pitied Lorcan for being on the end of Rowan’s glare.
“I think you should keep looking,” she suggested, drawing Rowan’s attention back.
“Yeah,” Lorcan nodded, “for about thirty minutes.”
“Or forty-five,” she quickly suggested.
Lorcan’s eyes flashed to hers and a wicked gleam shown there as he said to Rowan, without taking his eyes off her, “in forty-five minutes you could find her a few times.”
Elide grinned but quickly schooled her features as Rowan turned back in her direction.
“No,” Rowan insisted, sitting down heavily on the bed, “For all I know, she’s trying to find me but couldn’t because I kept moving around. No, from now on, I’m staying in one place. Right here.”
Elide nodded, “Well, it’s getting late.” She shot a look at Lorcan and he quickly followed her to the door.
“Yeah,” he added, “we’re gonna go.”
“Actually, do you guys mind staying here for a while?” Rowan asked, looking pitiful and so unlike his usual self.
“We have to get up early and catch that plane for New York,” Lorcan argued.
Rowan sighed, “Yeah, that’s fine.”
Elide stared at Rowan a moment and had an internal battle with herself. Should she be a good friend and support Rowan when he’s upset and hurting…or should she escape and have the best sex of her life.
Groaning at her apparent conscious, she glanced at Lorcan and tried to convey that they weren’t about to skip out now. He sighed heavily but nodded almost imperceptibly.
“But,” he said through gritted teeth, “we’ll stay here with you.”
Rowan visibly brightened. “Thanks, guys. I really appreciate this.”
***
They stayed like that for hours, Rowan eventually falling asleep across both Lorcan and Elide, keeping them in place and awake despite their exhaustion, desire, and exasperation.
Lorcan groaned and dragged a hand down his face, “We have to leave for New York in an hour.”
Elide sighed, “I know,” she glanced at Lorcan and then at the doors to the suite. “I’ve been eyeing those doors; they look pretty soundproof, don’t you think?” she asked hopefully.
Lorcan winced, “We can’t do that that’s insane. I mean ‘A’ he could wake up,” his eyes flicked down to Rowan who was totally passed out, then back to her, “and ‘B’ you know, let’s go for it.”
She grinned and they both tried to carefully remove themselves from Rowan until a knock pounded and Rowan shot up and stumbled off them.
“Lyr? Lyria?” He asked, still half asleep, “Lyria?” Rowan ran out of the room and through the suite to fling the door open. It wasn’t Lyria, just her parents.
Her mother leveled a look at Rowan, “No, You can forget about Lyria, she’s not with us. We’ve come to get her things”
“Wait,” Rowan stammered, “where—where is she?”
“She in hiding,” her father answered, “She’s utterly humiliated. She doesn’t want to see you ever again.”
“Hey, you guys, check this out, a whole cart was just left—" Aelin sauntered in with tiny bottles of hair products in her hands but froze as she looked between Rowan, Lyria’s parents, Elide, and Lorcan.
“Goodbye, Whitethorn.” Lyria’s father said
“Hold on!” Rowan insisted, stopping the parents from leaving, “Look, your daughter and I are supposed to leave tonight for our honeymoon, now you,” he took another breath, “you tell her that I’m gonna be at that airport and I hope that she’ll be there too.”
Rowan ran a frustrated hand through his hair, making the ends stick up, and explained, “Yeah, I said Aelin’s name, but it didn’t mean anything, okay?”
Aelin tried her best not to let her shattering heart show on her face as she slumped into a seat at the back of the room.
He continued, “She’s just a friend and that’s all!”
She knew Rowan wasn’t trying to hurt her, Hellas, he had no idea that she was still in love with him—he was just trying to get his wife back. Gods. His wife. How could Aelin be so stupid?
She felt Elide and Lorcan sink into the chairs next to her and Elide’s subtle, comforting hand on her back.
“She’s just afraid,” Rowan kept saying, “Now just tell Lyria that I love her and that I can’t imagine spending my life with anyone else. Please, promise me that you’ll tell her that.”
Aelin blocked out any other conversation.
***
Elide was tired. She was exhausted from staying up all night having to deal with distressed grooms, interrupting friends, and runaway brides—if she was being honest, Elide wasn’t all that upset over the last one. She kind of hated that Rowan married Lyria, she’d never gotten a good vibe from the woman, not to mention everything that was still between Rowan and Aelin…
Sitting next to Lorcan on their flight home, she leaned in close to rest her shoulder against his arm and smiled a bit as he turned towards her.
“You know,” she said, “maybe it’s best that we never got to do it again.”
He made a noise of agreement even if she could’ve sworn she saw disappointment in his eyes.
“Yeah, it makes that one ti—night special, I guess” He almost said time but corrected himself because they did it way more times than just fucking once. A smirk played at his lips as realized, “Technically, El, we are still over international waters.”
Her eyes lit up and she grinned as she maneuvered out of her seat and told him, “I’m gonna go to the bathroom, maybe I’ll see you there?” She asked coyly. Elide had taken half a step before turning back with a worried glance at him, “Airplane bathrooms are tiny, are you going to fit?”
Lorcan leaned back and smirked fully, “I’ll fit.”
She scoffed at the way his eyes darkened—it was obvious he wasn’t talking about the bathroom—but walked back there anyway.
He leaned over to watch her walk away and caught her sly wink as she slipped into the bathroom, before facing forward and coming face to face with Fenrys who’d taken Elide’s seat the moment she was gone.
“Gods,” Lorcan jumped, “what?”
“Can I ask you something?” Fenrys asked, oblivious to the growing anger emanating for Lorcan at another instance of being interrupted from his time with Elide.
“No,” Lorcan grunted and was about to get up when Fenrys grabbed his arm and dove into a conversation that Lorcan entirely blocked out.
He wasn’t sure how long he sat there desperately wanting to meet Elide but being trapped in a mindless one-sided conversation, his only reprieve being the small liquor bottles he’d charged to Fenrys’ ticket.
Fenrys suddenly stopped talking as he glanced over Lorcan’s shoulder. Turning, Lorcan winced as he met the livid eyes of Elide
“Elide,” Fenrys commented, “wow, you’ve been in the bathroom for like a half-hour.”
Elide’s eyes narrowed further and Lorcan tried to look apologetic as she bit out, “I. Know.”
***
When Elide, Lorcan, and Fenrys arrived back at their building Lysandra and Aedion were waiting for them in Elide’s apartment.
After the hellos and hugs, Lysandra stepped back and narrowed her at Fenrys.
“You ate meat!” She accused.
Then she turned towards Lorcan and Elide who watched her with wide eyes, “You had sex!”
They sputtered, “No we didn’t!”
Lysandra scoffed at Lorcan, “I know you didn’t, you have the personality of a shoe, who would want to hook up with you?” She gestured at Elide, “I was talking about Elide.”
Elide forced a laugh, “What? Lysandra, I did not have sex.” Elide brushed off the claim as Aedion gave her a funny look.
Lysandra shook her head and sighed, “This pregnancy is throwing me all off.”
Lysandra and Aedion said their goodbyes, and then Fenrys walked across the hall to his own apartment, leaving Lorcan and Elide standing in Elide’s kitchen.
“Well, we certainly are alone.” Elide said, unnecessarily.
Lorcan nodded, “Yeah, uh, good thing we have that, ‘Not in New York’ rule.”
She hummed noncommittally.
“Listen, I uh,” Elide tried to put her scrambling thoughts into words, “I just—that night meant a lot to me, I guess I’m just trying to say thanks.”
Lorcan cleared his throat and stepped closer to her, “Oh, yeah, you know,” She looked up as he stumbled over his words, “that night meant a lot to me too.”
They stared at each other for another long moment before Lorcan nodded at the door and said, “All right, I gotta go unpack.”
“Okay.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.” She watched him leave and waited to hear the door across the hall open, but the click of the door handle never came.
Lorcan stalked back in and slammed her door behind him.
“I’m still on London time, does that count?” He asked wildly
Elide was already flinging herself at him, “That counts!”
Then she wrapped her legs around his hips as he lifted her and carried her into her bedroom.
***
Aelin was making another lap around the airport, hoping to hear some updates about her flight. In her mad dash to show up at Rowan and Lyria’s wedding, she had bought the first ticket she could to London and hadn’t worried about her return flight. She didn’t think it would be such a struggle to fly home.
“Aelin!” A deep, familiar voice called out.
She stopped and turned to see Rowan sitting alone in an almost deserted waiting area.
“Rowan, hi.”
He stood up and met her halfway, his face scrunched in confusion “What are you, uh what are you doing here?”
“Oh, well,” she adjusted her bag on her shoulder and flashed him a smile, “I’ve been on standby for a flight home for hours. I’ve become very familiar with the airline staff.”
He nodded
“So,” she glanced around, “no sign of Lyria, huh?
“Not yet.” Rowan shook his head.
“What time are you supposed to leave?”
As if on cue, the speakers crackled as an announcement called, “This is the last call for Flight 1066 to Athens. The last call.”
Rowan made a face and answered her, “Pretty soon I guess.”
Despite her feelings about Lyria, the very last thing Aelin wanted was to see Rowan so dejected and heartbroken.
“I’m sorry,” she said as gently as she could.
He sighed and sat back down as Aelin took the seat across from him
“I just, I don’t understand,” He scrubbed his face with his hands, “I mean, how can she do this? You know, am I… am I like a complete idiot for thinking that she’d actually show up?”
“No, you’re not an idiot, Rowan. You’re a guy very much in love.” Aelin sighed.
He snorted, “Same difference”
She cracked a smile and he matched it.
The voice over the speaker rang out again, “All ticketed passengers for Flight 1066 to Athens should now be on board.”
“I get it!” Rowan snapped at the invisible voice, then sighed again, “Well, that’s that.”
Aelin couldn’t watch this anymore. “No, you know what, I think you should go.”
“What?”
His face snapped up and Aelin looked into his earnest, pine green eyes as she told him, “Yeah,” she nodded, “I think you should go, by yourself, get some distance, clear your head, I think it’d be really good.”
He looked skeptical but Aelin thought she saw an ounce of relief. “I don’t—I don’t know.”
He looked at the gate attendant still at the check-in desk and Aelin knew he wanted to.
“Come on Rowan, I think it would be really good for you,” She urged, hoping the trip would make him feel better and he would come back seeming more like himself—like the Rowan she knew.
He was nodding, trying to convince himself, “Yeah,” he eventually said, “I can do that.”
“Yeah!” Aelin agreed, trying to hype him up.
Rowan grabbed his bag and looked back at her, still frustrated, “I can’t even believe her,” he chanced another glance around the terminal as if Lyria would materialize in front of him, “No, you know what, I am, I’m going to go.”
“Good!”
“Yeah, why not?”
“Right!”
“Right.” Rowan took another step before turning to face her once more, “Thanks, Aelin.”
She smiled at him, glad that he was getting some of his happiness back that had abandoned him the previous day.
“Okay,” she said again and opened her arms to give him a hug he enthusiastically returned. “I’ll see you back at home if I ever get a flight out of here,” she huffed and began to turn away.
“Well...no, never mind.” Rowan shook his head, dismissing whatever he was about to say.
Aelin tilted her head, she scrunched her brows in confusion as he gave her a sheepish grin, “What?”
Rowan looked between her and the gate attendant, “Why don’t you come?” at her shocked silence he plowed on, “I—I have two tickets,” he waved them in front of him, still wearing that boyish smile she loved so much, “Why not?”
“Oh, I don’t know,” she trailed off. Aelin wanted nothing more than to say yes, but Rowan was offering her the second ticket on his honeymoon trip for gods’ sake. But as she kept looking into his hopeful face, she felt her resolve and guilt crumbling. “Really?”
“Yeah. Yeah, it’ll be great,” he insisted, handing her one of the tickets. “You can lay on the beach and read, and I can cry over my failed marriage,” he chuckled, “See? Already making jokes.” the smile he forced was more of a grimace.
“Rowan, I—”
“No, really,” Rowan stepped up to her and placed his hands on her shoulders. She tried not to lose focus as she felt his warmth sink into her. “Please, Aelin,” he said, looking more vulnerable than she’d seen him all weekend. “Gods, I could use a friend right now, and you’re one of the best.”
“Wow,” Aelin took a breath. She could accept. She could go to Greece with Rowan for a week and support him and enjoy herself. “Okay. Uh, yeah, yes! Yes, I can do that.”
“Really?” his smile widened and so did hers.
“Really.”
They walked to the gate attendant and handed her their tickets. After a disapproving glare for their timing, she opened the door and waved them through.
Rowan readjusted his bag and paused, “Oh, wait, I forgot my jacket. You go on, I’ll be right there.”
Aelin flashed him a happy smile and nodded, walking onto the plane.
Rowan quickly jogged back where he’d been sitting, picked up his jacket, straightened, and met the eyes of his runaway bride.
“Lyria.” he breathed.
She looked between him and the gate looking distraught and Rowan realized that she must have seen Aelin go onto the plane. His eyes flared, understanding that Lyria must have thought everything with he and Aelin had been intentional. And it wasn’t. It wasn’t...right?
She scoffed and made to turn away, but he stammered, “Oh no, no, no, no! No!, Lyria!” He frantically looked between Lyria’s retreating figure and the gate that Aelin had walked through to the plane where she was waiting for him.
Cursing every god he knew, he chased through the airport after his wife.
***
Aelin enjoyed first class. She didn’t fly it often, but when she really wanted to treat herself, she would. This flight was no different than she remembered. She settled into the seat, keeping the window spot open for Rowan, and ordered them both a drink from the flight attendant. She figured they could both use one after this insane weekend.
Glancing out the window, Aelin noticed that the airport appeared to be moving.
She jolted in her seat. The airport wasn’t moving. She was. The plane was.
The plane was leaving, and Rowan wasn’t on it.
“Oh, my Gods,” Aelin muttered in disbelief as she sat on a plane departing for what should’ve been Rowan and Lyria’s honeymoon. “Oh, my Gods.”

Chapter 4: A Rather Indecent Proposal
Links to other chapters: Chpt. 1, Chpt. 2, Chpt. 3 Chpt. 5
Pairing: The Mandalorian x female reader
Rating: T
Warnings: Jealous!Din, a little bit of canonical violence
Word Count: ~9900 (I know it’s long, but it felt better as one chapter instead of split into two.)
Author’s note: Happy Mando Monday! I hope you enjoy this new chapter! First though, I need to apologize if the man you love or you yourself are called Eugene, but please don’t hate me for thinking it’s an unsexy name. Also, apologies to skinny men everywhere, you might not be my type, but I’m sure someone is into you.
“Do you think you could come with me for a business meeting? I could use your language skills.” Mando surprises you with his request. So far, he’s always conducted any business on his own, and except for a few weeks ago when you asked him about his bounty, he hasn’t shared any details of his work with you. But as always, you’re eager to help him if you can.
“Of course, I can. What do you need?” You’re actually kind of excited at the chance to accompany him.
“The client comes from the Unknown Regions and I hear he prefers to use Sy Bisti when possible,” Mando explains, “He’s also known to be very particular, so anything that can impress him would be helpful.”
“Absolutely, I can be your interpreter,” you agree, “When is this meeting?”
“As soon as we get to Canto Bight in a couple of hours.” He tells you. Oh, you look down at your lounging-on-the-ship comfy clothes; you’ll need to get yourself pulled together for a business meeting.
“I better go get changed into something more presentable then. Can you watch the little guy?” You ask him.
“Why? You look fine.” Mando is such a guy sometimes. You just give him an incredulous look with a small raise of your eyebrow as if to say really? “I mean, sure, I’ll watch the kid if you want to change.”
“Thanks. But, yes, I definitely need to change before we meet your client,” you reply and head down to the hull; you’re almost out of earshot when you hear him mutter to the child, “Don’t get it, she always looks fine to me.” It makes you smile to yourself that he thinks that, yet there’s a part of you that’s eager for him to see you dressed a little nicer for once.
For about the millionth time you tell yourself that you shouldn’t have a crush on Mando, but that voice is getting drowned out more and more by another one that keeps telling you to enjoy it. After your trip to Crucival, you know that he finds you attractive at least. And Maker knows you’re even more attracted to him now that you know him even better. Plus seeing him almost naked was hard to ignore! So what if he considers you just a friend, as long as you don’t let things get out of hand, or say something stupid to him, you might as well have fun with your silly little fantasies.
You rummage through your clothing and pull out a nice black dress. It’s stylish but without being too fussy and you think, it will be perfect for a meeting with a client. Besides, if you’re going to Canto Bight, you know most of the women there will be dressed to the nines so you want to make sure you’re helping Mando give off a good impression. You take the time to style your hair and put on some make-up too. You give yourself a once-over in the small mirror in the fresher and, even in the harsh industrial light, you have to say that you look pretty nice. You knew that being a nanny to a toddler was never going to be a glamorous job, but the chance to clean up like this is fun every once in a while.
“We’re landing soon, you need to come sit down!” You hear Mando calling to you, so you quickly make your way back up to the cockpit.
“Thanks,” you say as you get back to your seat, but before you sit down, you turn to Mando with a little flourish and say, “See, much more presentable for your client now.”
Din stares at you in the elegant dress; you’re literally taking his breath away and he can’t even speak for a few seconds. Finally all he can think to say is, “You look good.” And he immediately chides himself for not being able to come up with a better compliment. Thankfully, you seem pleased with his pathetic words and just give him a happy smile before buckling yourself in. He’s still staring at you, taking in the pretty hairstyle you’ve created and looking at whatever it is that you’ve done to make your lips seem redder and fuller. It isn’t until a sensor on the control panel starts beeping loudly that Din snaps back to reality and focuses on landing the Crest.
“Wait, what about the child, do we bring him with us?” In your excitement, you’ve forgotten your primary job, as you’re getting ready to head out into the hustle and bustle of this flashy city. You look at the little one’s big eyes and like his father, he also seems to be fascinated with your done-up appearance.
“Sure, I have a satchel he can ride along in. And he’s plenty old enough to get into the casino; the age to get in is 18.” Mando chuckles as he maneuvers his 50-year-old toddler into a small brown shoulder bag. Mando’s cape partially obscures the little one making him less noticeable. You suppose he’ll be all right, it’s only a meeting in the restaurant of a casino; it’s not as if you’re taking the little one to the gaming tables. Although if you’re honest, you wouldn’t be surprised if Mando said that was perfectly ok too, so long as he’s safe. You give his tiny hand a squeeze and he coos back at you seemingly eager for your little adventure.
You follow Mando off the ship and through the throngs of men in sharply tailored evening jackets and women beautifully attired in chic gowns. Everyone looks very cosmopolitan especially against the stunning background of the decadent casino. You have to admit that you were expecting something a little more garish based on the descriptions you’ve heard of Canto Bight, but this particular establishment is quite nice with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and unique modern art pieces strategically placed throughout the large lobby. With Mando in his beautiful beskar armor and you in your fashionable dress, you make a dashing pair as you pass by the colorful lights of the gaming machines.
Din leads you to a restaurant entrance and tells the maître d’ that he is here to meet a Mr. Omseki. The man seems slightly taken aback by the presence of a Mandalorian but when his gaze lands on you, his face softens and in a crisp accent he says, “Right this way, Madam” and then he barely glances at Din, as he says, “Sir”. It’s not surprising that the man would rather keep his eyes on you with your eyes shining in delight as you take in the scene around you. Din’s never cared much for Canto Bight and its rather pompous atmosphere, but he’s finding some charm in this place as he watches your reaction to it all. Not to mention, Din knows he would have received a much frostier welcome here without you by his side and he’s very glad you came with him. As you reach the client’s table, this feeling is renewed, as Mr. Omseki is all smiles as you greet him in the unusual language. Despite not understanding the words, Din can tell by the man’s animated speech, that he is positively delighted at the prospect of meeting with a beautiful woman and not just a Mandalorian bounty hunter. The man also seems happy to see the child and he gives him the flower from his lapel to play with as a small gift. Din listens as you interpret the client’s words and you all begin to exchange some welcoming small talk. Greef Karga had been the one to pass on this client to Din as a lucrative off-the-books bounty, but the man he described was temperamental and moody. Mr. Omseki is anything but moody tonight and if Din didn’t know better, he’d swear the man was flirting with you. He doesn’t love that idea, but if it helps this meeting go smoothly, it will be worth it.
Mr. Omseki is a charmer and he is thrilled to be speaking to you; he’s told you several times how pleasant it is to talk business in an ‘appropriate’ language and how overjoyed he is to speak to you. You suppose it must have been a while since he’s had the opportunity to speak Sy Bisti and perhaps that’s why he’s enjoying himself so much now. You’ve felt a little abashed at times, as you’ve interpreted his rather flowery praise of you to Mando although at least some of it has also extended to him. However, this client seems more interested in just chatting with you than he is in talking business with Mando. You try to steer the conversation back to Mando’s work, but each time you do, Mr. Omseki manages to ask you another question about yourself. Mando must sense your worry that you aren’t doing a good enough job and he drops his hand down to cover yours where it is sitting on the table. He gives you a reassuring squeeze and you continue making polite conversation with the client. You figure this must be part of his business negotiations.
Din leaves his hand covering yours in a clear message to the client that you belong with him. It’s a subtle gesture, but one that Mr. Omseki is shrewd enough to understand as shortly afterwards he shifts the conversation to the bounty that he wants Din to capture. He listens carefully as you interpret the details and he begins to formulate a plan for the hunt. Din almost has all the pertinent information, when a sudden commotion interrupts the conversation. He immediately pulls his blaster and shields you behind him. A man in a disheveled suit is pushing past the maître d’ and several waiters as he stumbles towards your table. Din realizes disappointedly that this man looks exactly like the quarry that was just described by Mr. Omseki.
“Mr. O-Omseki, I have it, I have all your m-money and the in-interest,” the man stutters out as he begins pulling out bags of credits from his coat.
“Well, well, Mr. Sanditore, looks like this is your lucky day,” Mr. Omseki drawls out, “I was just about to send this Mandalorian off to kill you.”
“Th- thank you Mr. Omseki, thank you, I promise you won’t have any trouble from me again.” The disheveled man is practically shaking with gratitude.
“Well, I am sorry Mr. Mandalorian, it was delightful to meet you and your most lovely interpreter, but I am afraid I no longer have need of your services.” Mr. Omseki says to Din. Then he turns to you and speaks in Sy Bisti in a soft voice. Din obviously can’t know what he’s saying but the mild look of surprise on your face is enough to raise his concern. Whatever it is though, you handle it gracefully and end the conversation with a pleasant tone before shifting back to Basic to say good-bye. As you exit the table, you reach for Din’s arm, threading your hand around his elbow. He is surprised by your touch but says nothing as you walk towards the large bar near the center of the restaurant.
“What did he say to you?” Din wants to know.
“He asked me if we were romantically involved, because if we weren’t he wanted to know if I was free for the rest of the evening.” You reply looking a little embarrassed.
“What did you tell him?” He really wants to hear this answer.
“I lied and said that we were. It seemed like the best solution.” You’re slightly looking away from him as you say this as if you’re worried about making eye contact.
“Good.” Din’s pleased you lied, and it’s petty, but he likes the idea of that rich man thinking that Din has something that he wants and can’t have.
“I’m sorry about the job though,” you’re saying to him now, “I know you must be disappointed.”
“It’s alright,” Din sighs a little though, “these things happen.” He sees you look around the bar area with a wistful look and realizes that you’re not ready to leave. “Besides, now we have time to stay and have a drink, just the two of us, well, us and our little sleeping bundle here.” The baby has curled up and is napping in his little satchel.
“Really?” You look so pleased that it makes Din smile to himself. You settle into one of the stools at the bar and Din motions to the bartender to order your drinks. He orders one for himself too, asking for a straw in his.
“Wait, so you do use straws?” You ask with a small laugh.
“Sure, it’s the easiest way to drink in public.” He shrugs matter-of-factly, but that just seems to make you giggle more. “What’s so funny?”
“I don’t know,” you say between giggles, “but there’s something so cute about you using a straw.”
“Cute?” He says, sounding slightly insulted.
“Oh stop, I mean it in a good way,” you say and light push his shoulder in a playful fashion, “It’s probably just because I’ve never seen you use a straw before.”
“So when you see me do something new, it’s cute to you?” Din is playing up his affront to the word cute because he’s enjoying teasing you.
“No, not everything new.” You roll your eyes at him. “It’s just when you do something ordinary, I guess, because I tend to think of you as extraordinary.” You let your lashes flutter a little as you say that last word, flirting with him.
“Extraordinary, huh?” He cocks his helmet to the side as he looks at you, “I like that better than cute.”
“Whatever, you’re still cute too.” You give him a wink and then turn to the bartender who has your drinks. Both glasses have a straw and you make quite a show of using yours, so much so that Din can’t help but let out a laugh. You’re both enjoying the moment so much that neither of you notice a thin, lanky man approach you.
“Ex-excuse me?” The man is trying to get your attention. Mando shifts back into alert mode almost instantly as he says, “Yes?”
The man is about as tall as Mando with very fair hair and pale skin. He looks to be in his mid-thirties and seems a little out of place here in a casino. Although, like the other men here, he’s wearing an expensive suit, but everything about him looks slightly uncomfortable and it’s as if he doesn’t quite know what to do with his body, like the way he holds his shoulders and moves his hands looks anxious.
“I’d like to hire you for an evening,” the man says, but weirdly he looks at you instead of Mando, but you figure that’s because he’s probably too intimidated to look directly at the Mandalorian.
“What sort of work do you need?” Mando asks in an even tone.
“Oh?” The man turns and looks at Mando directly, “I- I didn’t mean you. I want to hire her for an evening.”
Mando’s reaction to this statement is so swift you almost miss it. He instantly pulls his fist back and punches the man square in the face, knocking him to the floor. Mando looks down at him and grits out in an angry voice, “She’s not for sale.”
Well, this is a first. You thought you looked pretty nice tonight, but apparently, you look like a prostitute.
“Wait, wait, I’m s-sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.” The man cowers on the ground but tries to explain himself, “I didn’t mean to insult her, or you.”
“So what did you mean?” Your curiosity has gotten the best of you.
“I just need a beautiful woman to pretend to be my girlfriend for an evening, that’s all.” He says.
“Exactly how is that different?” Mando is still towering over the man in a very threatening manner.
“Just to attend a party with me, and help me look good,” the man says quickly, “I promise nothing s-sex related at all.” He holds his hands up in a defensive posture. He looks back to you with pleading eyes, “I can pay you really well, and all you need to do is go to a party and wear a pretty dress.”
You admit you’re intrigued by the idea and you know that with Mando losing out on this latest bounty, any extra funds would be helpful. You put your hand on Mando’s bicep in what you hope is a calming motion as you say, “It can’t hurt to hear him out, Mando.”
“Are you serious?” Mando asks you in a low voice.
You shrug, “If we don’t like what he has to say, you can punch him again.” The man on the floor lets out a little whimper at that, but Mando gives you a small nod and backs away from the man.
Tentatively, the man picks himself up off the floor and extends a hand out to you, “I’m Eugene DeWitt, I own a company that creates high-end gaming machines and I develop algorithms for those machines.”
You shake his hand briefly, and give him your first name. “So, Mr. DeWitt, why do you need a pretend girlfriend to go to a party?”
“Please, call me Eugene. It’s the annual celebration for the casino owners and it’s my best chance to network with them. I’ve been to the party the last three years, but I haven’t been able to barely get a word with any of the important owners.” He explains.
“What makes you think I’d be able to change that?” You’re not sure what effect your presence would have on his ability to do business.
“I need to find a way to catch their interest and impress them, and I think a woman like you would be the best way to do that.” He tells you.
“I’m flattered, but I think you might be overestimating my appeal,” you reply, “besides, why don’t you just ask out a woman you want to date?”
“I’ve tried,” Eugene admits, “but honestly, even if they’d said yes, I know they wouldn’t have the same effect as you; you’re drop dead gorgeous.”
“He’s right,” Mando says softly, almost under his breath. Your head snaps to the side to look at him after that comment. You don’t have any time to process it however because Eugene is still speaking.
“I’ll pay you 20,000 credits just to go to the party with me and pretend to be my girlfriend.” He offers.
What?!? Is he serious? Suddenly this job has real potential. But you’re still skeptical that he wants you to just attend the party, it feels like that amount of money would come with additional stipulations.
“Let me get this straight, you want me to just go to the party with you and pretend to be your girlfriend, but you’re not expecting sex or any other sexual favors?” You state this outright because you need everything to be clear.
“Yes,” he confirms, “I would need you to be affectionate towards me, but only in an appropriate way in public.”
“Define what you mean by affectionate.” You want to make sure you know precisely what he wants.
“Hold my hand or arm, let me put my arm around you, dance with me, maybe let me give you a small kiss?” He suggests.
“No kissing.” Mando interjects all of a sudden.
“O-Ok, no kissing,” Eugene agrees, “But would you be alright with the rest of that?”
“Yes, I can do that.” His terms seem reasonable and honestly, that much money to just attend a party? You’ve had way worse jobs.
“I’m going too,” Mando states and from his tone of voice this is not up for debate, “I’ll be your bodyguard for the evening.”
“That’s a good idea,” Eugene is intrigued by the prospect; “A Mandalorian bodyguard would also be impressive.”
“Good, then you can pay us 40,000 credits for the evening,” you counter-offer. You know it’s ballsy to ask, but truthfully Mando’s skills are worth a lot and he should be paid as well.
“That was uh more than I was hoping to spend,” Eugene says.
“Maybe so, but now you’re getting both of us to help you impress these future clients,” you smile flirtatiously and look him right in the eye holding his gaze.
“I can do 35,000,” Eugene offers.
“Alright, 35,000 and you buy me a new dress and shoes for this party.” That last part is really only because you don’t own any other dresses that would be suitable for his event, but also part of you wants to see if you can get him to give in to you.
“Can the dress be red?” Eugene asks.
“Sure, I’ll get a red dress, if that’s what you’d like,” You’re totally fine with that.
“We have a deal.” He says.
“One more thing,” Mando speaks up again, “Pay her half the credits now.”
“How do I know you won’t just take my money and leave?” Eugene asks.
“You have my word as a Mandalorian.” His tone is serious and just intimidating enough that Eugene capitulates. He takes out a holopad and asks for your information and just like that, 17,500 credits are in your account. It’s more money than you’ve ever had.
You finalize all the arrangements for tomorrow, with Eugene offering to have his mother watch the child for the evening. Mando is a bit reluctant at first to have someone else watch the kid but he realizes it will be hard to pull off looking like a bodyguard with a baby in tow. Likewise, you can hardly play the role of trophy girlfriend if you have the little guy. You wait until Eugene takes his leave of you for the night before you turn to Mando to exclaim over this crazy turn of events.
“Oh my, Mando, can you believe it? 17,500 credits for each of us, just for one night of going to a party?” You can’t help the excitement in your voice.
“Hmm, yes, it’s a lot,” he says, with a lot less enthusiasm, “but it’s all your money.”
“What?” He catches you by surprise, “No, Mando, I’m going to split it with you.”
“He only wanted to hire you,” he states firmly.
“Yes, but I was never going to do this without you. I was going to suggest you come too but you beat me to it.” You explain to him.
“Were you really?” He sounds a little skeptical, but there’s a small note of hope in his voice too.
“Absolutely. I’m not so naïve that I would agree to go to a party with a total stranger without you there to protect me.” It feels so natural to you now that of course he would be there to watch over you. “Besides, I know that you being there will keep Eugene from getting too handsy.”
Mando makes a little snorting sound, “Yeah, I could do without the affectionate part.”
“Don’t worry, I can do just enough to make it look believable without letting it get out of hand.” You link your arm through his and lean a little onto his shoulder, “C’mon, Mando, be a little happy about the money with me.”
He reaches up and pats your hand where it holds onto him. “Alright, since it means that much to you, Im happy.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next day you are in a swanky boutique recommended by Eugene where you are on a mission to find a red evening gown for tonight. You tried to tell Mando that his presence was not necessary for this, but he insisted on coming along with the child in tow. It’s been an adventure already because as you were looking over possible dress choices with the saleswoman, the mischievous toddler managed to climb out of his satchel and onto a table in the lingerie section. When you caught him, he was playing in a pile of lace thongs with one pair dangling off his ear. Even more amusing was Mando who was trying to extract the kiddo from his panty pile while trying hard not to touch any of the thongs. Thankfully, the saleswoman thought it was all utterly charming and laughed right along with you. Now Mando and the little guy are sitting together looking only slightly out of place on an elegant velvet sofa while they wait for you to try on dresses.
It’s been so long since you’ve shopped for anything this fancy, you were feeling a little intimidated at first. Yet the more you viewed the beautiful gowns, the more excited you became at the prospect of wearing one for the evening. The selection in this shop is lovely and since you know Eugene is paying, for once you’re not worried about the price. You slip on the first dress and can’t help but smile at your stylish reflection. This first one is a slinky satin gown that hugs your curves. You step out into the main area of the dressing rooms where Mando is waiting and where there is also a large three-sided mirror.
“Oh that looks very nice on you,” the saleswoman says.
You turn to look at yourself in the multiple angles offered from the mirror, “I’m not sure, what do you think, Mando?”
“It’s fine,” he says flatly. Well, with that lack of enthusiasm, you know this dress is out.
The next dress is more of a ball gown style and it’s kind of a lot with a beaded bodice and a full tulle skirt. Still you figure you should see it in the better mirror for the full effect.
“Oh no, I look like a red powder puff!” You say in dismay.
“I like it better,” Mando says, and then under his breath you just barely hear him say, “You’re more covered up.”
“I can’t wear this and be taken seriously.” It’s on to dress number three.
As you adjust the straps for the third dress, you find your face heating up at your reflection. This dress screams trophy girlfriend as it is super sexy. The deep sweetheart neckline shows off a lot of cleavage and there are thigh-high slits on both sides of the skirt.
You’re barely out of the dressing room when you hear, “Absolutely not.”
You can see Mando’s visor trained on you and it feels like that black T is boring a hole into your body.
“I don’t know, I think I look really good in this one.” Wow, when you turn around you can see that this dress is practically backless.
“You look fabulous! Very hot!” the saleswoman coos at you.
“Go change.” Mando’s voice sounds deeper somehow and he’s using his this-is-not-a-request voice. A little naughty part of you wants to argue back with his demand, but you did tell him that you didn’t want Eugene to get too liberal with his definition of affection, so you figure Mando’s probably right.
When you head back to the dressing room, you’re down to just one more dress and as you slip it over your head, you know that this is the one. It’s made of a soft, floaty chiffon with a bodice that accentuates your bust and your waistline. The skirt flows down your hips and legs gracefully and while there’s a slit in this dress too, it’s more hidden and only offers a glimpse of leg as you move. When you step out of the dressing room this time all you hear is a soft murmur of approval from the saleswoman.
You smile at your reflection as you twirl a little in the mirror and imagine how nice you will look with your hair styled and with your evening makeup.
“This has to be the one,” the saleswoman is saying to you now, “Doesn’t she look enchanting?” and she turns to Mando for his approval.
Mando nods his helmet slightly, but remains quiet. You didn’t really expect him to say much, but you were hoping for a bit more than that. At least he isn’t disapproving of this gown though.
“I have the perfect shoes to go with this dress. I’ll be right back!” The saleswoman tells you.
Din waits until she is out of earshot and then says softly, “You look beautiful.” He watches as your face lights up with his compliment and you thank him, reaching out to grasp his arm briefly as you do. That seems to be a thing you do now when you’re particularly pleased with something he’s done. You turn back to the mirror to inspect the dress more and he lets his gaze roam over you.
The truth is Din thought you looked beautiful in all of the dresses, even in the silly puffy one. He didn’t want to encourage you too much with the first dress because although you looked great it in, the style was fairly revealing and he disliked the idea of Eugene seeing you in it. But then, that third dress, Maker, he almost had a heart attack when he saw you in that. It was so sexy he wanted to rip it off you right there in the middle of the store. There was no way in hell any other man was going to see you in that. This dress you’re wearing now is more sophisticated and gives off more of a sensual elegance than outright sexiness. He still hates the idea of Eugene seeing you in it and what’s more thinking that you chose the dress special for him. This whole job is stupid, but he can’t deny the money is too good to pass up. Still he doesn’t trust Eugene to have such pure intentions as he claims and he knows he won’t let the man have a single moment alone with you if he can help it.
You’ve finished choosing the shoes and now you’re heading back into the dressing room to put on your regular clothes. Din breathes a sigh of relief at seeing your normal self again and he feels himself relax a bit. He follows the saleswoman to the register station and watches as she carefully places the gown in a garment bag. You’re about to give the woman Eugene’s account information, when Din hands over his own credit chip to pay for the dress and shoes.
“Mando, what are you doing? Eugene is going to cover the cost of this.” You voice conveys your confusion at his actions.
“I’m not letting another man buy you a dress,” Din mutters.
“Why not? It’s only to wear for this party tonight.” You’re looking at him completely perplexed.
“Because I want to buy it for you,” he says more firmly this time. Din sees a flash of something in your eyes that he likes; it’s a mixture of respect and awe, and perhaps a touch of desire too if he’s not being too hopeful.
“Well, if you’re certain,” you reply softly still looking at him in that new way.
“I am.” Din takes the garment bag from the saleswoman and motions for her to charge everything to his chip. “You’re sure you didn’t want the big puffy dress, though?” And even though you can’t see the smirk on his face, he’s fairly confident you can hear it in his tone.
“Thank you, Mando, but I think this is the best choice.” You let out a light laugh and give him that beaming smile again that he loves to see. You follow him out of the store and then grasp his arm again as you say, “I really do love that dress, thank you for buying it for me.”
“You’re welcome,” Din tells you, wishing that it would just be the two of you going out tonight.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“You’re sure you want to do this? We could still turn around and leave.” This is the second time Mando has asked you that. The first was when you came out of the fresher after finishing your make-up and he saw your completed look for the evening. He didn’t compliment you again, but the long pause he took to look at you and the way he tilted his helmet to the side made your insides flutter nonetheless. Now you’re standing outside Eugene’s door and it seems he’s still having second thoughts.
“It will be fine, Mando. Just remember that this money means you can take a break from hunting and spend some extra time on finding the Jedi for the little guy here.” He sighs in response and knocks on the door.
You shift the toddler in your arms and you look down at him. He’s been having fun playing with the soft material of your dress and he’s got a big handful of your skirt in his little claws right now. The only worry you have is about leaving him with a stranger tonight. Eugene’s mother will probably be fine, but you’ve grown so attached to the child you’re feeling more anxious about being away from him that you anticipated.
“You’ll be a good boy tonight, won’t you, buddy?” You say to the child as you carefully extricate your dress from his little hand. “Mando and I will miss you but we won’t be too late.”
The door opens to reveal Eugene in a tuxedo with a red flower on his lapel and next to him, a cheerful looking older woman.
“Good evening, you look spectacular,” Eugene greets you enthusiastically.
“Thank you, you look dashing yourself,” you respond with a slight flirtiness to your tone. You figure you might as well get used to your role now.
“Oooh! Is this the sweet little baby I get to watch tonight?” The woman seems kind and the child coos at her with interest.
“Yes, thank you for doing this,” you respond pleasantly. You give the little guy a hug and a kiss on his forehead before handling him over to her.
“What a little charmer! You don’t have to worry about a thing, my dear. I’ll take good care of your baby and you take good care of mine.” She says with a wink towards Eugene.
“Th- thank you, mother.” Eugene sounds embarrassed and you try your best not to snicker. “We should get going.” He extends his arm to you and you lightly thread your hand around his elbow.
This whole time Mando hasn’t made a sound and is standing so still you’d almost think he was a suit of armor on display. But when you take Eugene’s arm, Mando lets out a little grunt that sounds like disapproval. You turn to look at him and mouth, “It will be OK” and give him as encouraging a smile as you can. The nod of his helmet to you is slight, but you know he understood.
Eugene leads you out onto the city walkway with Mando following close behind. The party is being held in the largest casino and it’s a short walk from Eugene’s home. Once again, the streets are filled with fashionable people ready for a night on the town. You feel the soft swish of your skirt against your legs and smile again at how nice it feels to be dressed up like this. You make small talk with Eugene, getting comfortable with him so you can make this look like a real date. You resist the urge to turn back and look at Mando though because you know if you do, your feigned interest in Eugene will falter.
By the time you reach your destination, you’ve managed to perfect a nice light laugh at Eugene’s jokes and you feel comfortable enough to lean into him in an affectionate way. As you enter the opulent ballroom of the casino, you paste a brilliant smile onto your face as if you’re simply delighted to be there. Eugene has told you he wants you to help draw the attention of various men in attendance so you figure you’ll sort of openly flirt with the room and see who notices. You catch the eye of a well-dressed older gentleman, and your technique works wonderfully as he comes right over.
“Good evening, I’m Mr. Belvers, the owner of this casino; it’s so very nice to have you here, my dear.” He greets you with a small bow and flourish of his hand.
“Why, thank you!” You respond warmly, “It was so nice of my boyfriend to bring me here tonight. You must know him, Mr. Eugene DeWitt of Advanced Gaming Enterprises?” You introduce Eugene with a smile.
“Oh yes, of course, Mr. DeWitt, how nice to see you again.” With the introductions made, Eugene launches into conversation with Mr. Belvers. You listen as best you can to the business talk and smile and nod like the perfect trophy girlfriend. It’s boring, but really easy when you realize that not much more is expected of you. Finally, with a promise to dance with Mr. Belvers later, the conversation ends and you breathe a small sigh of relief that if anything at least you got Eugene a few minutes with the owner of this place.
“That was incredible!” Eugene is saying excitedly, “I’ve never even met the man before but he acted like we were old friends. You are fantastic!” He gives your hand a squeeze and pulls you a little closer to him. He steers you deeper into the ballroom, eager to make another contact. You turn your head to look at Mando and give him a smile and a subtle nod, which he returns.
The pattern continues throughout the party, you spy an older man, make eyes at him, and reel him in for Eugene. When you’re between conversations, Mando has taken to checking in with you to make sure everything is going well. All in all, it’s about what you expected and you have to admit that Eugene was right; apparently, these men are all easily swayed by the look of a pretty face. You’re please to see that Mando’s presence is having a good effect too. These bigshots are very impressed that Eugene has a Mandalorian for his private security. Several of them have even asked Mando if he’s available for future security jobs too. Who knows, maybe Mando will come away with some business contacts of his own at the end of tonight.
As the evening continues, Eugene seems to be growing more confident, and you’ve noticed he’s taken to placing his arm around your waist. It doesn’t bother you, but occasionally his hand does seem to be a touch low. He also leaned in just a moment ago and let his lips brush your cheek. It wasn’t really much, but still you’re surprised he dared to try it.
“I said no kissing.” Mando’s voice is hard and direct, causing Eugene to flinch and instantly put more space between the two of you. “Keep your hands above her waist too.” Your heartbeat stutters at Mando’s protectiveness and you look at him with a grateful smile. When you’re sure no one else is looking, you give him the flirtatious look you’ve been using all evening and then top it off with a wink. You notice that he clenches his fists as you do this and then gives you a deeper nod in response.
I hate this, I hate this, I hate this. Din’s mantra for tonight is not a pleasant one. He’d much rather be hunting down a bounty right now than having to watch you flirt and simper to every man in the room. He’d rather be slogging through a swamp or crossing a frozen tundra to catch a quarry than have to watch yet another man ogling you or touching you. And then, there’s Eugene; Din would like to punch him in the face again. The man keeps getting bolder as the night progresses. Din’s caught him staring at your breasts and your ass several times, and he’s clearly getting too handsy. The only thing making this night remotely bearable is the way you keep looking over to him with such sweet glances, as if you’re sharing a secret with him. Although the way you looked at him just now made him want to sweep you up in his arms and haul you out of here as fast as he could. If you do that again, he doesn’t know if he can be responsible for his actions.
Din groans to himself, and prepares for this night to get worse because Eugene is leading you out onto the dance floor. There’s no way for him to follow close to you while you’re dancing and he’s willing to bet that Eugene takes advantage of that opportunity. In an attempt to stay in Eugene’s eye line as much as possible, Din stalks around the dance floor following your swaying movements. He can’t help but watch the graceful way you move as you dance, noticing the soft arch of your back and the delicate glide of your feet across the floor. As he sees Eugene’s arms pull you in closer, Din feels a deep burning anger in his stomach and once again thinks about breaking Eugene’s nose with his fist. This is the worst job ever.
Dancing with Eugene isn’t so bad you decide. It’s a nice break from all the forced flirting and extremely dull conversations you’ve had to put up with all evening. And despite the fact that you’d much rather be dancing with someone else, it’s still a pleasant activity. Moreover, after Mando’s warning, Eugene is back to being a gentleman and keeping his hands in polite territory. He does seem to be enjoying the dancing himself, quite a lot by the expression on his face, although every once in a while his confidence seems to fade for a moment.
“May I ask you a personal question?” Eugene looks at you quizzically.
“Alright,” you agree, curious.
“Are you and the Mandalorian involved? Romantically, I mean?” He looks nervous as he asks this.
“Do you think I would have agreed to this date if we were?” You deflect his question somewhat because you find that you don’t really want to admit that there’s nothing between you and Mando. Especially because it feels like you’ve been growing closer. You think about when he insisted on buying you the dress earlier today, and how special that felt, definitely not something a friend would do. Even tonight, there is this energy between you and Mando that you can’t deny, nevermind that you’re technically on a date with Eugene.
“He seems extremely protective of you.” Eugene replies.
You shrug lightly, “He is.”
“You know, if you wanted something else, a different life, I could make that happen for you,” Eugene looks at your earnestly, “After tonight, I’m going to be an even wealthier man. I would treat you like a princess.”
“Eugene,” you sigh, “I appreciate the offer, but-”
“Don’t answer yet,” he insists, “Think about it. Please.” He pulls you in closer to him so that you’re dancing cheek to cheek. You know he means it to be romantic but you feel nothing. There’s nothing to think about.
When the music ends, you feel relieved that you can put some space between the two of you. You’re turning to look for Mando when unexpectedly you hear a loud crash followed by blaster fire. As if he materialized out of nowhere, Mando is at your side pulling you to the floor and covering you with his body.
“I’ve got you,” Mando says, holding you close with one arm as the other holds his blaster. Your heart is racing and you hear the commotion of many people shouting, rushing feet, and general mayhem. You pull yourself tighter under Mando, squeeze your eyes shut, and try to keep as still as you can. Suddenly, Mando lifts off you slightly and fires three shots in rapid succession.
“It’s alright,” He tells you, “I took care of them. Everything is alright.”
“You’re sure?” Your voice comes out shaky and high-pitched.
“Hey, look at me, come on, look at me” Mando’s voice is soft and comforting, and you tip your head up and open your eyes to look at his visor. “You’re safe, no one will hurt you.”
“Thank you, Mando,” you breathe, feeling relief flood your body. Even though you can’t see his eyes, you know he’s looking back at you and it’s soothing.
“You have to let go of me now, cyar’ika, so I can help you up off this floor.” His voice is still soft and you can hear a lightness to it now. You hadn’t realized but you have a death grip on the material of his thick protective shirt on the side of his body. Chuckling weakly at yourself, you release him and he climbs off you before reaching down to pull you back to your feet.
“That was incredible shooting, Mando!” Eugene can’t hide how impressed and excited he.
“I’ll say it was!” the casino owner from before, Mr. Belvers, is coming over to offer his praise to Mando too. He gives Mando’s hand a hearty shake and then raises his voice to address the party, “Folks! Everything looks to be all safe now, thanks to this heroic Mandalorian!”
The partygoers erupt in applause and for the next several minutes, people are coming up to thank Mando personally. You’re glad to see Mando get appreciation he deserves for saving everyone, but from his body language, you think he seems a bit embarrassed by all the attention.
“Who were they?” You turn and ask Mr. Belvers.
“Some thugs who have been plaguing the casinos for weeks now. I think they came here tonight trying to rob people of their valuables. By the way, there is a reward for their capture and I’ll see to it that those credits are yours, sir.” He says this last part directly to Mando.
Din thanks the man and gives him a small card with his guild information, explaining how best to pay him. Now that the danger in the room has cleared, quite literally by casino workers who’ve come to take away the bodies of the dead men, people are starting to go back to the party. These people are so wealthy and spoiled that these violent men and the Mandalorian who dispatched them are already just an amusing anecdote to be shared over cocktails. He is so ready to leave this place. Din looks over to you and sees that while you’re calmer now, you are still visibly shaken from the intrusion of the would-be robbers. He wonders sheepishly if maybe he scared you a little too by yanking you to the ground so quickly, but it was pure instinct to protect you. Nitwit Eugene is rambling on about what an exciting evening it’s been to whoever will listen, completely oblivious to your discomfort. Din decides Eugene’s gotten more than his money’s worth and he’s taking you home right now.
“It’s time for us to leave.” Din’s voice is stern as he steps closer to you and Eugene, not caring that he’s interrupting the man.
“So soon, the party is still going-” Eugene tries to protest, but when he sees Din’s rigid posture, he trails off.
“I am rather tired, Eugene,” you say, and then lower your voice “Besides, it will be better to leave them wanting more.” Din watches as you bat your eyelashes at the man and give him a soft smile, and then like magic, Eugene is agreeing to leave. Din does have to admire your skill at using your feminine wiles to get men to do your bidding. He also knows that if you ever choose to try that with him, he’ll be putty in your hands. He smiles at the thought, but it’s short-lived as soon as he sees Eugene slide his arm around your waist again as he steers you towards the exit. Din tromps after the two of you, at least this stupid job is almost over.
You’re close to Eugene’s place and you’re feeling quite glad that this fake date is almost over. You just want to get the child and hurry back to the Crest so Mando can fly you away from here. Eugene is wittering on telling you how great you were and what a wonderful pair you make, but you’re only barely listening to him. Blessedly when you get to Eugene’s door, Mando is all business.
“It’s time to make the final transfer of credits,” Mando tells Eugene.
“Of course,” Eugene replies, taking out his holopad and completing the necessary functions. “Thank you again, you were both very impressive.”
Eugene opens the door and you and Mando wait for a few minutes until he returns with the little one who is sound asleep. He hands the child to Mando and then turns to you, “I’d like a moment alone to speak to you before we say goodnight.”
“Eugene, I think I did everything you wanted tonight, but our fake date is over.” You say pointedly.
“Please, it will only take a moment.” He looks at Mando, “Please.”
“Fine,” you say and give Mando a small nod. He doesn’t exactly give you any privacy, but Mando does take a few steps away and turns his body slightly so he’s no longer facing you head on.
Eugene takes your hand in his and says in a soft voice, “Please, tell me that you’ve thought about my offer?”
“There’s nothing for me to think about; I belong with them,” you tell him as you pull your hand from his grasp and gesture towards Mando and the child.
“But there’s so much more I can do for you, I can give you more than he can. I can give you a safe home, beautiful clothes and jewelry, you’ll never want for anything.” Eugene must think you’re completely shallow and nothing but a gold digger. “And, I would worship you.” He’s really piling it on thick now.
“Eugene, you don’t even know me, and if you did, you would know that I’m not interested in that life,” you state firmly, “I think it’s time to say goodbye. I wish you all the best with your business.” You turn to go but Eugene reaches out for your arm. Fortunately Mando is already back at your side and he brushes Eugene’s arm away roughly as he says,
“She said no.” Din turns to escort you away, placing his arm around your waist, mimicking Eugene’s earlier touch. It means he’s holding you much closer to his body than he has before when he usually just places a palm on the small of your back. He feels you relax into his touch and for the first time this evening, he feels a sense of rightness. Still though, Eugene’s words I can give you more than he can are ringing in his ears and his self-doubt makes him sigh.
He waits until you are far enough away so that Eugene cannot hear him and in a small voice, Din forces himself to ask you, “You’re certain you don’t want to stay? He did make you a good offer.”
“What? No, I absolutely don’t want to stay with Eugene.” Your answer is swift and a bit shocked.
“I would understand if you did.” Din says, his voice still soft and trying to hide his emotion.
“Mando, do you want me to stay?” You stop and turn to face him so you can look directly at his visor, your face openly displaying your displeasure at his words.
“No,” he says strongly, “I don’t. Not at all. But it would be wrong of me to hold you back if you wanted to leave.”
You slip your hand into his and look at him with soft eyes as you say, “Mando, I don’t want to leave you, or the child. I’m happy with you both, happier than I’ve been in a long time. Eugene is wrong; he doesn’t know what you can give me.”
Din’s heart pounds at your words, as he says, “I’m glad,” he pauses just for a second before he tells you, “I don’t want you to leave us.” He gives your hand a small squeeze and turns to continue walking.
“Besides, there’s no way I could stay with a man I’m not attracted to in the slightest.” Your voice has a lighter tone to it and it breaks a bit of the tension.
“He wasn’t that ugly,” Din shrugs and you laugh in response.
“No, it wasn’t really about his looks, just the overall way he carried himself. I prefer a man with more confidence.” You say.
“Confidence is attractive.” Din agrees with you.
“Yeah, it is. I like a man who can walk into a room and earn everyone’s respect just by the way he holds himself. That’s incredibly attractive.” You give him a slight side-glance as you say this. “But if we’re being shallow, then I also wasn’t physically attracted to Eugene either.”
“Why not?” Din’s curiosity is peaked.
“He was much too skinny.” You wrinkle your nose a bit as you say this.
“You like chubby men?” Din chuckles, and while he’s not chubby, he thinks of his own stomach which isn’t quite as flat as it used to be when he was younger.
“I like bigger men,” you clarify, “Men who are broader, more muscular. Although chubby is cute too. When I cuddle with a guy, I want something to cuddle in to.”
“Is that so?” It’s not lost on Din that what you’ve just described is essentially him and he can’t deny how much he likes hearing that. Plus, now he’s imagining what it would be like to cuddle with you. He doesn’t have time to dwell on that thought however, because you’re giggling at something.
“Well and then there was the worst part, his name,” you say rather playfully.
“What was wrong with his name?” Din’s never thought about a name being part of someone’s attractiveness.
“Honestly, I don’t think I could seriously moan out Eugene in a moment of passion.” You’re consumed by giggles at the idea.
Din is stunned by what you’ve just said and all he can think about is what your voice might sound like if you were to moan out his name, his real name. Fortunately, he doesn’t seem to need to respond to you as you’re still wracked with laughter.
“Oh no!” You stop laughing and gasp, “I didn’t think.”
“What?” He has no idea what could be bothering you.
“Your name isn’t Eugene, is it?” Your eyes are wide as you look at him.
Din lets out a loud laugh at how comically horrified you look at the prospect. He’s still chuckling as he tells you, “Hell no.”
“Thank the Maker,” you mutter under your breath, making Din laugh again.
You’ve made your way back to the Razor Crest now and it isn’t until you have to let go of him so that he can open the ramp, that you realize you’ve been holding Mando’s hand this entire time. It felt so natural and easy to walk holding his hand, and you hope he felt the same way. You watch as he tucks the child into his pram for the night. You should probably go get yourself ready for bed, but you want to keep talking to Mando.
“May I ask you a question?” You say as he turns back towards you.
“Of course.” He nods to you.
“Why were you so adamant about no kissing tonight? I mean not that I wanted to kiss Eugene,” you make a face at the idea, “But, it seemed to really bother you?”
“Oh” Is all that he says and then he looks away slightly. You wait patiently but for a while it seems as though that might be the only answer you get, until he finally says, “I didn’t want to see him kiss you. I don’t want to see any man kiss you.”
The air between you feels suddenly charged, and you look into his visor where you think his eyes are, and you can’t help yourself from asking, “Why not?”
“Because I can’t kiss you.” Mando admits.
“Do- do you want to kiss me?” You can’t believe you’re daring to ask him that but you need to know.
“It doesn’t matter what I want,” he says and you can hear frustration in his tone, “I shouldn’t and I can’t.”
“I would like to kiss you, but only if it’s something you want too,” you admit to him softly.
“I do want to kiss you,” Mando sighs and he moves towards you slightly but then holds himself in check.
“So Mandalorians don’t kiss? I just want to understand, I don’t want to pressure you to do anything you don’t want to do or that goes against your beliefs,” you explain, wanting him to understand that you respect his creed. You can’t deny how much you want to feel closer to him and show him how you feel, but the last thing you want is to make him uncomfortable or do something he’ll regret.
“They do, there are… loopholes, but I- I’ve never-, I want to, but-” Mando shifts his feet and looks down.
“It’s ok, I understand.” You’re quiet for a moment and you think perhaps you should just drop this. But then you can’t stop yourself from asking, “What about the Keldabe Kiss? Didn’t you say there was something softer?” Your face heats up as you remember that moment well; you’ve thought about it often.
“You remembered that?” Mando says in a low voice.
“It was pretty unforgettable, Mando,” you reply with a smile.
“There is a softer version. I could show you. If you’d let me.” His voice sounds hopeful.
“I’d like that.”
He steps closer to you then and seems to stare at your face for a long moment until you decide to close the distance between you two. You’re so close you can hear him breathing. He reaches up and places his large hands on either side of your face, holding you still, as he slowly brings his helmet down to touch your forehead. When he finally makes contact, you hear him let out a shaky breath. You bring your hands to his waist and pull him in a little closer to you as you maintain contact with him. While this isn’t what you pictured when you thought of kissing him, you can’t deny how intimate and special it feels. Just from the deliberate way that Mando is holding you, tells you how important this is for him. You stay like that holding each other and feeling suspended in time.
“I know this isn’t the same as real kissing,” Mando says, “but I like holding you like this. I’ve thought about doing this a lot.” His voice is so soft you almost feel like you imagined his confession.
“I like it too,” you tell him. You’re about to tell him how much you’ve thought about being held by him as well, when suddenly the child’s cries fill the air. Just like that, the moment between you and Mando is gone and you hurry over to pick up the little one and soothe him.
“I guess I should go get us on our way. Besides, he always sleeps better when we’re in hyperspace.” Din takes a step towards the ladder, but then pauses before coming over to you and dropping his helmet down onto your forehead again for just a few seconds. It’s a small gesture, but his heart soars at being able to do it. He gives the child a comforting pat on the back before turning away and heading to the cockpit, his head full of thoughts of you.
P.S. Don’t think that you missed hearing him call you cyar’ika, you’ll be sure to ask him about it later ;)

Chapter Word Count: ~7,400
Total Fic Word Count: ~30,000
Genre: (Wedding) Fake Dating, Friends to Lovers, lots of bed sharing and every self indulgent fluffy trope possible.
Warnings: None? Lots of fluff? Occasional cussing? Some suggestive themes, moments, and jokes I guess. No smut or anything!
Disclaimer: I am not Daniel Sharman, and I do not pretend to know how he would act, speak, etc. This is fiction okay, there’s a lot of creative license, and potential to be OOC. Ricky isn’t mentioned because I started writing this before we knew he existed, so apologies for that. Also, if you’re DShar himself, please do us both a favor and don’t read this, okay???? Same if you know him 🙈
Title taken from the song Yellow Lights by Harry Hudson which suits this story quite a bit!
A/N: You thought I'd skip all the possibilities and tropes that come with the holidays?! Of course not. This is the final part to Yellow Lights. Thank you all for making my return to writing and posting so wonderful. I am so, so, grateful. I hope the ending lives up to your expectations. <3
The next month and a half passes by uneventfully. I try not to spend all of my time thinking about how great Rachel's wedding was, and equally try to ignore the wistful feeling Henry’s wedding left me with. Having Daniel be my fake boyfriend in front of my family showed me everything that I’d ever wanted; someone who fit in seamlessly, who loved me for me, with the perfect balance of romance and friendship. Whatever crush I had successfully buried when Daniel and I first met is now achingly hard to avoid. I curse my active imagination and optimism for letting me indulge in the moments of pretend, leaning too comfortably into our façade.
As a result, I don’t talk to Daniel much. He is busy finishing filming his project in London, and I try to focus on my life in LA. I’ve become paranoid that every text I send him is one too many, too annoying, or too bothersome. I figure I can reassess things when Daniel comes home from filming, and try to find my footing in our friendship again.
This seems like a solid plan until I’m on Zoom with my family for Thanksgiving. Since I’ve already flown back once this year for the wedding, and I’m planning to fly back again next month for Christmas, staying put for Thanksgiving was the economical choice. The call is mostly uneventful until the subject of Daniel comes up.
“Where’s that boy?” Aunt Judith crows from her spot at the dining table.
“Hmm?” I ask.
“She means Daniel.” Ryan rolls his eyes, bringing the iPad closer to her.
“Oh! Right.” I try to recover. “He’s still away filming his new project, actually, but I was able to fly out to see him at the end of September for another wedding, actually.”
Aunt Judith frowns. “That’s a long time to not see someone that handsome—” I start to laugh, “Are you sure he’s not cheating on you?”
Oh shit. It’s in this moment that I realize Daniel and I had never “broken up” as far as my family knows. I hear the rest of my family start sputtering in the background.
“Aunt Judith— you can’t just—”
“That’s awful, I—”
“It is kind of a long time, huh?—”
I try to keep a straight face. “Guys! It’s okay. He’s an actor, it comes with the territory. I expected this.”
“So you aren’t sure that he’s not cheating on you?” Ryan frowns.
“That isn’t what I meant, Ry. Daniel and I are fine. We’re really good, actually.”
“Well I certainly hope you’ll be bringing him home for Christmas then.” Aunt Judith huffs.
“It would be nice to see him,” Rachel speaks up for the first time, and her husband Nick nods. “I didn’t get to talk to him a whole lot at the wedding.”
I clear my throat, my mind racing. “You know, we haven’t actually talked about what we’re doing for Christmas yet; I’ll have to see what he’s doing— if he’s going to spend it with his family.”
“But you’re still coming home,” Ryan states.
“Yes, I am still coming home, no matter what.”
Ryan and Rachel’s mom, my auntie Kim speaks up. “I think it’s pretty common for a boyfriend to defer to his girlfriend’s family for the holidays. I mean, Ryan splits the day with Katharine of course, but Nick always came here with Rachel.”
“I hear you, Auntie Kim, but Daniel never gets to see his family so I’m not sure— all I’m saying is I’m not sure. He may very well come, and I will let you all know as soon as I know.” I smile tersely.
“Well hurry up, and find out,” Auntie Kim chastises. “Christmas is only a month away.”
When I hang up with them, it’s 7pm and I’m feeling antsy. How could I have forgotten that my entire family still thought Daniel and I were together? I’m not sure how to get out of this one. Tired of panicking alone in my head, I pick up my phone and dial Daniel before I can talk myself out of it. It rings and rings, and my anxiety that he won’t answer grows with each tone.
Eventually I hear rustling on the other line.
“Lauren?” Daniel’s voice crackles through the phone.
“Hi.”
“Are you alright?”
“What? Uh— yeah, I just needed to talk to you about something—” I glance at the time on my phone. “Oh god, no. What time is it there? I’m so sorry— I didn’t even stop to think about the time difference, I—”
I hear him suppress a yawn. “Lauren. It must be pretty important if you’re calling me AND rambling like this.”
“No, no, it can wait, I’m sorry— uh, go back to bed. I’m sorry I woke you up.”
“Lauren,” he stops me softly and firmly. “Stop apologizing. What’s going on?”
I sit quietly, feeling like an absolute idiot.
“Lauren, come on. You can tell me.”
“I— we… we never broke up?”
He laughs. “Sorry, what?”
“We never broke up.”
“Am I still asleep, is this a dream?”
“My family still thinks we’re together and they asked me if you’re coming home for Christmas.”
We’re both quiet for a moment.
“Oh.” is all he says.
“I talked to them for Thanksgiving, and they were asking about you. I realized too late that they thought we were still together— because I never told them we broke up. I didn’t think it through this far.”
“Right, I didn’t either.”
My phone starts ringing, telling me Daniel’s trying to FaceTime me.
I accept, and I’m faced with a dark screen.
“Why are we FaceTiming?”
I hear a lamp click on and suddenly Daniel’s face is illuminated as he lays in bed, lines from his pillow still on his face.
“Figured we should at least be able to see each other if you’re going to break up with me in the middle of the night,” he teases.
I shake my head. “Not funny, this is serious, D.”
“I know, I know.”
“If I break up with you, they’re going to yell at me and tell me I’m a stupid idiot.”
Daniel laughs.
“And if you break up with me they’re going to hate you, which means they’ll hate that we managed to ‘stay friends.’ And if it’s mutual…..” I shake my head, thinking. “They’ll think we were lying.”
“Which we were.”
I sigh, “Which we were.”
“So,” Daniel pulls his blanket up higher. “What are our options here?”
“I don’t know, that’s why I called you.”
I watch him stare off into space and reminisce about when I got to see this sleepy Daniel firsthand in Cape Cod.
“I could come for Christmas…” he trails off and I frown.
“That seems like asking a lot. You’ve already given up a lot of your free time this year for me.”
He shrugs into his pillow. “Do you not want me to come for Christmas?”
I pause. “I mean, that isn’t really the issue here. You have to be tired of being in love with me by now.”
He laughs loudly — a stark contrast to the quiet of his room. “Yes, being in love with you is very exhausting.”
“Tell me something I don’t know.”
“I’m kidding. Being in love with you is not exhausting. At all.”
I roll my eyes and say nothing. “I don’t think I can bear to break your family’s hearts at Christmas of all times.”
“Man of the year.” I drawl. “What are you supposed to be doing for Christmas? Going home?”
“No, usually I travel somewhere, but I hadn't decided yet.”
I hum in response.
“Kind of leaning towards traveling to Massachusetts now, if I’m honest.”
I look at him incredulously, only to see a playful grin on his face, but I know he’s serious.
“I’m not going to stop you if you really want to come. But I—” I swallow. “Eventually we’re going to need to plan for whatever happens after Christmas.”
He nods. “I know, we will. Let’s just enjoy Christmas together, first.”
I smile. “Okay. We can enjoy it. Together.”
He clears his throat. “I hope I’m not too rusty at this boyfriend performance, it’s been a few months.”
“Daniel Sharman has performance issues… I hope that doesn’t get out to the press.”
His eyes flash. “Bold, for you.”
I shrug. “You walked into that one, baby.”
“Well, you’re lucky you’re cute, darling.”
We look at each other for a moment, and I hope my eyes don’t give away how fond I am for this man who is willing to commit to fake-loving me, and putting up with my family, and who is setting the bar way too high for any actual real relationship I could hope for.
So much for reburying my feelings.
I break eye contact first. “I’ll let you get back to sleep. Sorry again for waking you up.”
“Do Not Disturb doesn’t apply to you, Lauren. Call any time.”
I smile softly. “Sweet dreams, I’ll text you tomorrow.”
“Goodnight.”
—-
I’m standing in the Boston Logan airport waiting for international arrivals; specifically Daniel’s flight from London. According to the board, his flight landed 15 minutes ago, so he should be coming to the lobby any time now. I bounce on my feet, simultaneously eager and nervous to see Daniel for the first time since parting ways after Henry and Claire’s wedding.
Eventually I see the hat and sunglasses I recognize from a selfie he sent me earlier, and I can feel my heart race. I begin walking towards him, and feel my pace quicken as I get closer. Eventually he sees me too and he’s grinning at me with his signature toothy smile that I missed so much.
When we come into contact I don’t know what the appropriate response is, so I simply grin up at him.
“Hi,” I breathe.
“Hi,” he smiles back, and before I know it he’s closer than he was before and he’s ducking down to kiss me.
It surprises me but I respond quickly, leaning up to meet him.
When it’s over he pulls back just enough to nuzzle his nose with mine.
“Missed you,” he says softly.
“Missed you most.” I smile.
He stands up straight, adjusting his backpack on his shoulder, threading his other hand through mine.
I can’t see his eyes, but I assume he must be looking around when he speaks.
“Oh, are you by yourself?”
The question catches me off guard.
“Yeah— well, Ryan’s in the car, circling so he wouldn’t have to pay for parking,” I roll my eyes.
He nods, “Sorry, then—“ he makes an inconclusive gesture. “Suppose I didn’t need to kiss you quite yet.”
My stomach drops and I smile tightly, “That’s okay— better safe than sorry. I get it.”
He tugs on my hand pulling me into a hug.
“I did miss you, though.”
“And I still missed you most.” I tease.
Daniel shakes his head, but doesn’t argue, pulling back from me and reaching for his suitcase with his freehand.
“Let’s get this show on the road.”
—-
I bring Daniel upstairs to show him around, and so he can put his suitcase in my room.
“Welcome to my childhood bedroom,” I announce, opening the door and leading Daniel inside.
“Wow, where little Lauren grew up,” Daniel teases looking around. When I first arrived home yesterday, I was quick to tidy up, and hide anything that was too embarrassing, but my room is more or less the exact same as I had left it when I was 18 and moving to college.
I nod. “Yes, many secrets to my backstory can be discovered in here.”
Daniel laughs.
Ryan appears in my doorway leaning against the doorframe.
“Just so you know, Daniel, my bedroom is on the other side of this wall,” he nods to his right. “I can hear everything that happens in here. The walls are thin.”
I frown, blushing, “Ew, Ryan.”
Daniel just laughs and smirks, “Got it, bro.”
I look at him incredulously, “Don’t encourage him.”
The two share a look and shrug, seemingly equally enjoying my discomfort.
“Dinner’s ready!” Auntie Kim calls up to us.
I use that as my cue, brushing past both of them to go downstairs, leaving their laughter behind me.
—-
After Christmas Eve dinner, Katharine stops by and the four of us decide to watch the classic, How the Grinch Stole Christmas. I’m the last to arrive in the living room, and when I enter I immediately notice that Ryan is cuddled up with Katharine, and sprawled out over the entire couch, leaving Daniel sitting in the only other seat— the armchair.
I narrow my eyes at them, “Are you guys for real?”
Ryan looks at us and hums innocently, “What?”
“You took the entire couch.”
I see Katharine bite her lip in amusement, as Ryan shrugs.
“I assumed you guys would cuddle anyway. Can you not share the armchair?”
Daniel intervenes, “Of course we can. C’mon Laur.”
He pats his lap. I hesitate briefly before nestling into his lap, tucking my head into his neck.
“Am I crushing you?” I whisper.
“Not at all, you’re keeping me warm.”
I huff a laugh as he puts the blanket over us and Ryan starts the movie. The steady rise and fall of his chest brings me a sense of peace and I have to try not to fall asleep, especially when his fingers gently caress my arm and my leg where he’s holding me to him. I exhale, turning further into his neck and nuzzling into him.
“Tickles,” he breathes, just shy of a whisper.
“You smell good,” I tell him, letting my eyes close.
His chuckle reverberates through his body. “Thanks, darling.”
I feel my eyes shut and sleep take over. I start to come to when I hear the ending song come on, and it drifts into whatever dream I’m having.
“She asleep?” I hear Ryan ask.
“Think so,” Daniel answers.
“You need help waking her up?”
“No, I’ve got it, thanks though. Nice seeing you, Katharine.”
I hear footsteps retreat and feel a series of kisses pressed to my shoulder, as Daniel’s long fingers brush hair away from my face.
“Time to wake up, pretty girl. You can go back to sleep once we’re in your bed.”
I shake my head no, clinging to him tighter.
“Like this bed.” I murmur drowsily.
He laughs softly. “Promise we can cuddle there too.”
“Promise?” I ask, peeking one eye open.
“I promise,” he confirms, pressing one more kiss to my shoulder.
I lift my head to look at him, rubbing my eyes.
“There she is,” he smiles gently at me.
I smile back sleepily, the words coming out before I fully think them through.
“Wanna know a secret?”
“Tell me.”
I swallow, letting my gaze flicker down to his mouth for just a moment. “I like cuddling with you.”
“You do, huh?”
I nod.
“Well the feeling’s mutual. Let’s go upstairs and brush our teeth so we can cuddle more in your bed.”
“Okay,” I relent, getting off of him. He stands up after me and I instinctively lace my fingers with his, leading us back upstairs. When we’re brushed and changed, we settle ourselves in bed and I claim my spot tucked into his neck again.
“Sweet dreams,” he says, kissing the top of my head. I echo the sentiment and gently kiss the spot on his neck I’m closest to. His arms tighten around me and I’m falling asleep again.
—-
For once, I wake up before Daniel. He looks peaceful as he sleeps on his stomach, his arm across my waist, face half smushed into the pillow. I turn my head to look at the clock to see it’s about 9:30 and know the others will be waking up soon. I turn back to Daniel and card my fingers gently through his hair. Eventually his breathing changes and his eyes flutter open, still clouded with sleep.
“Merry Christmas,” I whisper, our faces just inches apart.
He pulls himself closer to me, nuzzling into my side and closing his eyes again. “Merry Christmas.”
It’s quiet for a moment before he speaks again, voice raspy with sleep. “Is everyone else awake?”
“No, I don’t think so. I haven’t heard anyone up and around… they might be soon. Usually we kind of wander downstairs around 10, and it’s just past 9:30.”
He hums in response.
“You can go back to sleep for a little while if you want,” I offer, still running my fingers through his hair. “I’ll wake you when it’s time to go downstairs.”
I start to think he’s drifted off to sleep again when he opens his eyes and looks at me. “No, I can get up. I want to give you your present.”
I narrow my eyes at him. “I told you not to get me anything; you coming here like this with me— twice— is more than enough.”
He rolls his eyes, detaching himself from me and rolling out of bed. “And look like the asshole who didn’t get his girlfriend anything for Christmas? Not a chance.”
I sit up. “We could’ve lied about it—”
“Lauren,” Daniel looks back at me exasperatedly, leaning over his suitcase. “It’s Christmas. Please just open your present.”
He pulls out a neatly wrapped, thin rectangle and places it in my lap, sitting next to me on the bed.
“Merry Christmas, Laur.”
I carefully unwrap the package to reveal a framed art print, with a circle of stars in the middle; underneath it says “The Night Everything Changed” with the coordinates of what I assume to be Los Angeles. I look up to him with soft eyes, and he gives a one shouldered shrug.
“Saw an ad for this online— where you can get the night sky documented of any night you want, anywhere you want. I thought it would be nice to commemorate this past year, for us…” he trails off, and I hug the frame to my chest.
“Daniel, I love it— Really, really love it. It’s so thoughtful.” I reach out and thread our fingers together. “I’m going to hang this in my room. I want it somewhere I see every day.”
He smiles and squeezes my hand. “I’m glad you like it. I actually wanted to talk to you about something— in relation to this. I—”
We’re interrupted by a light knocking on the door, and we both turn.
“Are you guys awake?” Ryan’s voice calls.
“Yeah, we’ll be out in a sec!” I answer.
I turn back to Daniel who squeezes my hand and moves to get up, but I pull him back.
“They can wait; this is special. I want to hear what you have to say.” I smile at him warmly, but he shakes his head, lifting the back of my hand to kiss it.
“It’s alright, I’d rather wait and tell you when we have more time to talk.”
I frown. “Promise me you won’t forget?”
He laughs. “Trust me, I won’t forget.”
He moves to stand, pulling me up with him to go downstairs, but I stop him, wrapping my arms around him tightly.
“Thank you, D. It means a lot to me.”
He returns my embrace, placing a kiss to the top of my head.
When we pull apart, I take his hand again. “Time for Christmas. Your present is under the tree, by the way.”
Daniel laughs. “A present double-standard.”
I shake my head and lead him out of the room.
—-
I think we’re done with presents when Ryan surprises me, coming over to Daniel and I on the loveseat.
“This is for both of you, kind of.” He hands me a thin, narrow gift.
Daniel looks up, surprised. “Thanks, man. That was thoughtful of you.”
He looks at me, silently asking, did you know about this?, and I shake my head no.
I unwrap the package to find a small frame, with a one hundred dollar bill matted in the middle. I look at Ryan and furrow my eyebrows.
“It's the hundred bucks I said I’d give you if you brought a real date to Rachel’s wedding. Seeing as the same guy is here for Christmas I figured you earned it. Thought I’d frame it— but you can take it out and spend it on a date or something, I don’t care.”
Auntie Kim squints. “Sorry, you told her what?”
I roll my eyes and try to avoid the way my stomach sinks at the reminder of how this all started.
I feel Daniel’s hand on my knee. “Clever, Ryan.”
I look over at him to see him flashing his polite interview smile, and I instantly know he knows exactly what I’m feeling.
Auntie Kim stands and stretches. “I don’t get it, but I’m going to go start breakfast. Your sister and Nick are picking up Judith soon and then they’re coming over. Katharine isn’t coming until dinner, right, Ryan?”
As Ryan confirms, she walks out of the room. Ryan turns back to us. “Mind if I shower first?”
I shake my head no, still lost in my thoughts, and I hear Daniel tell him to go ahead.
We’re left alone and I feel Daniel’s thumb brushing my knee.
“Thank you for my presents.”
“You’re welcome— I’m glad you like them; they don’t beat your present for me though.”
He rolls his eyes and we sit for a moment, the framed hundred dollar bill still in my hands.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
I look at him and shake my head. “I don’t know. Just an odd reminder of how this started, and that it’s going to have to end soon, I guess.”
Daniel frowns. “We haven’t really gotten to talk about that. Why don’t we table that for later— we still have a nice day ahead of us. Those are problems for tomorrow.”
I nod and smile at him, and he pulls me in to kiss my temple, and I hear the click of an iPhone camera. I look up to see Auntie Kim in the doorway.
“Sorry, I just wanted to tell you that the coffee’s on. It was too cute not to capture.”
Daniel stands up, offering me his hand. “Make sure you send me a copy. I’ll have to add it to my collection.”
I chuckle as I stand. “Let me guess; the album is called ‘Cute and Shit.’”
He grins. “How’d you know?”
—-
Christmas flies by. It’s filled with good food, wine, and everyone I love. It’s hours after dinner, and Auntie Kim has already driven Aunt Judith home before going to bed herself.
Ryan, Katharine, Daniel, and I are all still seated around the dining room table playing some kind of team card game, and everyone’s faces are red from laughter and wine.
I can’t help but watch Daniel, who is in some kind of hilarious argument with Ryan over some card he pulled. His eyes shine from the light of the chandelier, and his smile is big and bright, taking over his whole face.
It hits me in this moment that I’ve surpassed unlabeled romantic feelings; I am truly in love with this man. The realization consumes me until Katharine knocks her shoulder into mine giggling.
“Can you believe we love these idiots?”
“Sometimes it’s a hard pill to swallow,” I tease, giggling, catching Daniel’s eye mid-argument. He winks at me and I feel my already red cheeks flush even deeper.
“You two are so cute,” Katharine continues, watching our interaction. She lowers her voice, whispering to me behind her wine glass. “I was kind of worried that when you got a boyfriend he wouldn’t mesh well with our dynamic, ya know? But it kind of feels like Daniel’s always been here.”
Her words vocalize the thoughts that have been ringing in my head all day. “I know what you mean.”
Katharine dramatically clears her throat. “Are you two done? Is it our turn yet?”
—-
We part ways from Ryan and Katharine in the hallway, giggling and shushing each other in the wee hours of the morning. I shut my door behind me and waggle my eyebrows at Daniel.
“Uh oh, there’s trouble,” he teases. “Planning to seduce me?”
I shrug exaggeratedly and he laughs before looking around. “Fuck, where are my sweatpants?”
I giggle. “They’re literally right behind you on the chair.”
“Oh, thanks.” He grabs them before looking at me. “Can I change in here tonight?”
I flush. “Yeah, sure.”
After sharing a room together all this time, this is the first time we’ve changed in front of each other and the thought makes my skin tingle. I make my way over to my dresser, pulling out my own sleep shorts and t-shirt. I wiggle out of my pants and pull on my shorts, glancing over my shoulder to see Daniel, shirtless, adjusting his sweatpants on his hips. My throat runs dry, and I turn around to pull my own shirt over my head, reaching behind me to unclip my bra once it’s on. I bundle my discarded clothes in my hand, walking over to toss them in the hamper. I turn around to find Daniel already looking at me. He’s still shirtless and my eyes drift to his defined chest. He looks down as if noticing for the first time.
“It’s really, uh, hot in here.” He speaks again. “Would it bother you if I slept shirtless?”
I shake my head, mentally screaming. “No, it is warm,” I agree, reaching up to put my hair in a bun on top of my head.
He watches me intently, and I laugh self consciously. “What?”
“Nothing. Just thinking about how this was the best Christmas I’ve had in a while.”
My face lights up. “Really?”
“Yeah.” I see his grin quirk up, and know something else is coming. “I’d say it was almost perfect.”
“Oh?” I question, finishing my bun. “Go on.”
“We fit in a lot of classic traditions today, but we missed one that I’m quite fond of.”
I look at him, trying to think of what it could be, as he takes a step closer to me.
“There wasn’t any mistletoe.”
I swallow. “There wasn’t.” I pause, my mind racing. Before I can fully think it through I find myself offering, “But we could pretend?”
“Hmm?” He murmurs, taking a step closer to me so he’s right in front of me now. I know he’s giving me a chance to take it back, or make a joke; I’m nervous, but I don’t want to take it back. I just really want to kiss him.
“I’d really like it if you had a perfect Christmas.”
“And you?” He questions softly. “What would make it a perfect Christmas for you?”
Instead of answering him, I reach up on my tiptoes to kiss him for a moment, pulling back to look him in the eyes. His eyes meet mine in some unspoken understanding, and then he’s dipping down to kiss me again.
He kisses me softly, delicately, like all the kisses at the wedding. He pulls back briefly to look at me, as if he still expects me to change my mind. I kiss him again, wanting there to be no doubt in his mind, and he kisses me back with purpose and passion, and I’m caught off guard by the weight of it. I gasp, and Daniel uses this opportunity to deepen the kiss, pulling me closer. It reminds me of our very first kiss back on his couch. My arms move around his neck, pulling our bodies flush together.
Daniel pulls away first, but barely, breathing hard, kissing down from my jaw to my neck.
This is definitely new territory for us.
I move my hands to his hair, and he groans at the feeling. I can’t help myself as I sigh breathlessly, a shiver running down my back. He grins against my neck, his teeth scraping at my skin and I moan softly.
“Wait,” I say breathlessly, a thought somehow flitting through my mind. “Earlier, didn’t you say there was something else I should know about my present?”
“I can tell you tomorrow,” he murmurs into my neck between kisses. “It’s time for bed.” He tugs me down onto the bed so I’m underneath him, resuming his kisses on my neck.
“This doesn't seem like going to sleep to me,” I tease.
“It is, shhhh, you’re dreaming.”
“That I’d believe,” I laugh, and Daniel smirks, moving so we're eye to eye again.
“Dream about me often?”
“Shhh.” I pull him closer, turning his words back on him. “You’re dreaming, go back to bed.”
“Happily,” he murmurs, kissing me again.
I bring my hands down to his bare shoulders, feeling his warm, toned skin against my fingertips. I gently drag my nails down his chest to his stomach, and I feel his muscles clench at my touch. I can’t help but smirk to myself as he pulls away to rest his forehead on my shoulder, letting out a shuddering breath. I bring my nails around his back, tracing up his taut muscles and across his shoulder blades.
I feel one of his hands come down, pushing my shirt up, his mouth pressing hot kisses to my abdomen. His nose takes over pushing my shirt up, exploring every new inch revealed with his mouth, his hand now running over my thigh, fingers squeezing occasionally, slowly climbing higher. As his hand reaches the bottom of my shorts, he lightly tugs at the fabric. He pauses, his blue eyes tentatively peering up at me.
“Can I…?” He looks nervous, like I’ll reject him. As if I have ever rejected him, or could ever manage to deny him. I’m not even entirely sure what he’s asking but I find myself nodding quickly. As he goes to tug my shorts down we hear a bang on the wall we share with Ryan followed by a crash, a “Shhhh” and a “Shit.”
We both startle and look over toward the wall, before looking back at each other and laughing softly.
“Ugh, I don’t want to know,” I say, shaking my head.
“You probably, definitely don’t.” He smiles at me before pulling his hand off my shorts, and my shirt back down, letting his fingers trace along the waistband of my shorts before he clears his throat. “We should, uh, get some sleep.”
I blink at the abrupt change in mood before nodding awkwardly. “Okay, sure.”
He rolls off of me, and I reach over to shut the lamp off. I’m hesitant to cuddle up to him, unsure if what just happened changed something between us, but I’m relieved when I feel his arm wrap around me the way it always does. Neither of us say anything, and I try not to think about the last few minutes, the firmness of his body behind mine, or the way my body’s buzzing— closing my eyes to try and get some rest.

The next two days with my family go pretty much the same way as Christmas did. Daniel gets on swimmingly with everyone, and my heart aches every time I realize that once the holidays are over, our charade is going to come to an end—a permanent end— this time. I try to ignore that thought and enjoy my time, basking in the coupley moments in front of my family, and leaning into every touch we share.
I never get a chance to ask about my Christmas present; the time never feels right, and Daniel doesn’t bring it up either. Nothing happens between us like Christmas night; when bedtime rolls around we change in the bathroom and go straight to bed. We cuddle, but there’s no after-dark kisses or wandering hands. I wonder if Daniel feels as self-conscious about that night as I do; if he does, he doesn’t show it.
—-
We’re in my room packing to go back to LA in an effort to try to beat the inevitable New Year’s rush at the airport.
“I need to find something to wrap this in so it doesn’t break in my luggage,” I frown, holding up Daniel’s present. “It’s my new prized possession— nothing can happen to it.”
Daniel looks over and laughs. “Want me to wrap it in my sweatpants? That's what I did on the way here.”
“Okay, thank you.” I pad across the floor and pass him the frame, our fingers brushing in the process.
“Of course.” His lips quirk up as he carefully arranges the frame in his suitcase.
A moment passes, and I wonder if now is a good time to ask about my present .
“Hey, I’ve been wanting to ask—“
“Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask you—“
We both stop mid-sentence and Daniel laughs, “Sorry what were you saying?”
I shake my head, courage gone. “No— sorry, go ahead.”
He looks at me curiously but continues, “Henry texted me; he and Claire invited us to their New Year’s Eve party. They’re having it in LA this year.”
I quirk an eyebrow. “Us? They want me to go?”
He shrugs. “Yeah, Claire apparently requested your presence specifically.”
“Oh, that’s nice of her. I usually stay in for New Year’s.”
“It could be fun— if you aren’t sick of me yet,” Daniel teases.
“Ha!" I laugh, "If you aren’t sick of me yet, more like.” I shake my head. “And don’t mind sharing your friends with me.”
“They’re basically your friends now, too,” he argues.
“I’m not sure one wedding constitutes that, but I appreciate the sentiment.”
“You should come.”
I stop and look at him.
“I’ll call a car and pick you up on the way.”
When I hesitate, he softens his voice. “Please come.”
I swallow, “Okay.”
I’m not a big party person, but I also know I don’t have it in my heart to deny him, especially after everything he’s done for me.
He grins. “Really?”
I nod. “Yeah, I’ll go.”
“Cool, I’ll, uh, let them know we’re coming.”
I bite my lip to suppress my smile and start planning my outfit in my head.
—-
When we arrive at Claire and Henry’s house on New Year’s Eve, I try not to gawk at the size. It’s massive and sits high on one of the tallest hills in LA, away from the noise of the city.
The first person to spot us as we walk in is, unfortunately, Eleanor. I’d hoped she was in London, and away from us, but alas.
“Daniel!” she squeals, throwing her arms around him. “I was so hoping you’d be here.”
“Hi, El,” he placates her with a strained smile. “You remember Lauren?” He gestures back to me.
“Laura?” she asks, disinterested.
“Lauren,” I correct, forcing myself to smile. “Nice to see you again.”
“Eleanor,” Daniel intervenes. “Could you point us in the direction of Henry and Claire, perhaps?”
She frowns, but quickly covers it up. “They were in the kitchen last I checked— we have just got to catch up later.”
“We will!” He agrees graciously. “Let us get a drink, and I’m sure we'll have plenty of time to talk later.”
Daniel puts a hand on my back, guiding me forward and into another room, which turns out to be the kitchen. He’s immediately drawn into a series of bro hugs and handshakes by Henry and some of his other friends.
“Lauren! I’m so glad you came!” I turn to find Claire by a table of beverages.
“Claire! So nice to see you, thank you for inviting me.”
“Thank you for coming,” she says, pulling me into a quick hug. “I told Daniel he just had to bring you.”
I laugh. “He told me you were quite persistent— I usually have a low key New Year’s at home, but this is a fun change of pace.”
“Can I get you a drink?” She asks, already reaching for a bottle of champagne.
“Sure, thank you.” I catch Daniel’s eye across the room; he’s being clapped on the back and led out of the kitchen. I smile reassuringly, hoping to communicate that I’m fine here. He seems to understand, as he smiles back and nods before turning back to his friends.
Claire giggles, bringing my attention back to her.
“You look at him with such heart eyes, it’s cute.”
I try to keep my face from panicking. “Sorry?” She laughs like my reaction is the funniest thing in the world. “Oh don’t worry, he looks at you just the same, so you’re fine.”
I chuckle nervously. “I think maybe you’ve got the wrong impression—”
She shrugs like we’re talking about something commonplace, like the weather.
“Maybe, it’s possible... but I don’t think so. Now come! There’s some other girls I’d love for you to meet.”
—-
I spend a good portion of the night talking with Claire and her friends. They’re all very kind to me, but eventually I excuse myself to get some air out on the balcony.
I’m looking up at the sky — it’s dark, dotted with faint stars and a distant passing plane — when I hear somebody come out and join me. As they settle next to me against the railing I immediately know who it is just by how comfortable I feel.
“Whatcha doin out here, LaurLaur? The New Year’s only a few minutes away.”
I grin at him. “Just getting some air and admiring the stars. From up here you can actually see them.”
He hums, looking up with me.
“It reminds me of a certain piece of art a certain someone got me for Christmas.”
He chuckles. “I’m glad you like it so much.”
“It was very thoughtful…. I wonder if any of the stars are in the same places as they were that night.”
“Which night?”
“The night everything changed. Your birthday.”
Daniel leans against the railing facing me, and looks like he’s about to say something before he changes his mind.
Eventually he speaks again. “Things are going to change again soon, right? You said you’re sure about the break up?”
I swallow, scoffing my shoe against the balcony floor.
“I mean, we still need to figure it out, but you can’t keep fake dating me forever. That isn’t fair to you.”
He smiles wistfully. “It’s not like there was anyone else I was trying to date.”
“I’m a lucky girl,” I lament, and Daniel blushes and shakes his head. “It’s a real shame we’re over, though," I jest, trying to lighten the mood. "I’ve never gotten to kiss anyone at midnight.”
His eyebrows raise in surprise. “Never?”
“Nope,” I pop the p and look down at my feet.
“Well.” He clears his throat conspiratorially. “We can agree not to bring our fake relationship into the New Year if you want, but if the kiss starts before midnight, I think we’d get by on a technicality...”
I laugh. “You really want Eleanor to hate me, don’t you?”
He grins cheekily and shakes his head. “Nah, I think I saw her latched onto some other poor bugger inside. We’re in the clear.”
I roll my eyes, looking back up at the sky. I feel his finger trace my arm, gently using my elbow to turn my attention back towards him.
His voice is softer now, “It’s up to you, but there’s no one else I’d rather kiss at midnight.”
I look into his eyes and realize he’s being sincere. My heart’s beating out of my chest. Yes, I want to kiss him, but I want it to mean something. I keep giving in because I know one day this is all going to go away, and I’ll be left with just my memories and heartache.
He must see some hesitance in my eyes, because he’s taking a step back.
“If you don’t want to, it’s fine. Really.” He shoves his hands in his pockets. “Not trying to pressure you into doing something you don’t want to do.”
I shake my head. “It’s not that I don’t want to, I just…” I trail off, looking over the balcony, trying to swallow my feelings, which have manifested as anxious tears in my eyes. I feel a tear escape, and I hastily reach up to wipe it away.
“Hey,” Daniel says gently. “I didn’t mean to upset you.”
“You didn’t.” I let out a watery laugh. “Sorry, I don’t know why I’m…”
I feel his steady stare, and I come to terms with the fact that I’ve really gotten myself into a mess that I can’t just smooth over. I’m going to have to tell him.
I take a minute to compose myself, and Daniel stays quiet giving me time to put my words together as I look anywhere but at him.
“I do want to kiss you, D,” I start slowly, trying to keep my voice steady, “but I can’t if it’s just another part of our fake relationship.”
He tugs me closer by hand, gently, so I have no choice but to look at him. I swallow the lump in my throat. “I… know this wasn’t supposed to be real. But it has been, for me.”
He shakes his head and squeezes my hand. “So then stop trying to break up with me.”
I blink at him, and he continues.
“The night everything changed— your star map— I wasn’t referencing the story we told your family about my birthday.” Daniel looks at me long and hard like I’m missing something totally obvious. “It’s actually the stars from a night a month or so later.”
A month or two— Oh. OH.
“The night Ryan FaceTimed me?” I whisper, afraid to be wrong.
He takes my other hand in his, lacing our fingers together. “Listen— Fuck. I’m in love with you, Lauren.” He looks at me so intensely and my head is spinning. “I love you, and I’m in love with you.”
“What?” I ask dumbly.
He licks his lips. “A wise woman once said to me, you don’t confess to ‘kind of like someone’ when you’ve already been friends as long as we have.”
I stare at him for a second, my cheeks burning. “Well your friend sounds pretty smart.” I swallow. “Because I love you, too.”
He laughs, relief flooding his features. He pulls me to his chest, crushing me and squeezing the air out of my lungs. Eventually he pulls back, hands cupping my face.
He grins and shakes his head. “She is smart, so, so smart, but I don’t want to be her friend anymore.”
“What do you mean?” My brows furrow in confusion, worried that somehow I’ve misread this whole interaction, my relief quickly being replaced by panic.
“Well.” He steps forward, keeping our faces incredibly close. “I’m hoping she agrees to be my very real girlfriend— that is, if she doesn’t break up with me first.”
I hear everyone inside start the countdown to midnight. I’m still looking into Daniel’s eyes in disbelief, my hands clinging to the front of his shirt.
When the countdown hits one, I’ve finally found the words I want to say.
“Happy New Year, boyfriend.”
He’s grinning as he kisses me, and I am too. It’s not our most elegant kiss, a mess of teeth and giggles, and whispered “I love you”s. We never stray too far from each other’s lips, kissing again and again like we can’t get enough— and maybe we can’t.
Eventually, we calm down a bit, and when we kiss this time it’s all-consuming, sucking the air out of my lungs. It feels like my love is fizzling to the top of my skin, and I feel it. ‘It’ being every indescribable emotion in our kisses this past year, but this time I know what it is: true, unadulterated, uninhibited love. I am in love with my best friend, who is now my boyfriend, and I don’t care who knows it— as long as he does.
His fingers press bruisingly into my hips before he pulls back just enough to look at me.
“Can we go home?” He whispers sheepishly, brushing some hair out of my face tenderly. “I’m kind of tired of sharing you with the public.”
I huff a laugh. “I know exactly what you mean.” I lean forward to kiss him one last time before pulling back to lace our fingers together, squeezing tightly. “Please— take me home, D.”
I don’t have to tell him twice.
