Egyptian Revival
Yesterday's post was about the full opening of Tutankhamun's tomb, but there have been several times when Egypt has had a strong influence in fashion and art, and here I selected a few things from the 1910s and 1920s that are Egyptian revival, and of course let me know which ones are your favourites of you can add some when reblogging this post.
Here we go.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The beginning of the century marked the birth of modern dance, so we see that part of the Orientalism trend had a deep Egyptian influence from Les Ballets Russes to the Denishawn school: strong lines, profile poses, spectacular costumes, all taken from the art and sculpture of the ancient Egypt.
Here a little video of the Denishawn dancers along Ted Shawn (not the dance of the picture above), with no music because this is FROM 1913:
youtube
Also, this influence is clearly seen in the art deco masterpiece that is the dance scene from Metropolis (1927):
youtube
Denishawn students (Lillian Powell, Charlotte Brendel, Grace McCrea, Irene Pryor, Claire Niles) in an Egyptian dance created as part of a vaudeville act by Ted Shawn (not related to the Denishawn Egyptian Ballet), Hixon-Connelly, 1918, The New York City Public Library.
Vaslav Nijinsky and Serafima Astafieva in "Cleopatre", probably by Ernst Sandau, 1912, National Portrait Gallery, London.
Desiree Lubovska as Cleopatra, ca. 1915.
Ida Rubinstein with costume designed by Erté, 1920s.
Dancers from the Folies Bergère with costumes designed by Erté, Paris, 1924.
Dance of the Priest of Ra, from Dances of the Ages, Denishawn dancers, 1913.
Dance Scene, from Metropolis, Fritz Lang, 1927.

Fashion and accessories were deeply inspired by Egypt in the 1920s, thanks to the simple shapes of the garments, the use of striking accessories and jewelry, and the use of embellishments and embroidery to elevate the simple dresses: from appliqués to bead embroidery, to burnt velvet and translucent layers. And of course, let's not forget the use of colour that gives the feel of ancient Egyptian art: gold, sand, teal, royal blue, and burnt orange.
Orange burnout velvet dress, 1920s, available in Antique Graces.
Egyptian revival brooch, Max Neiger, 1920s, sold at auction.
Egyptian revival silk dress with appliqués, 1920s, Stephens College Costume Museum.
"Cleopatre" grande robe du soir by Jean Patou, Les Modes, september 1921 (click that link! You can read the whole magazine!).
Evening dress, Thurn, 1923-26, Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Pair of leather gloves with silk embroidery, ca. 1925, LACMA.
Beaded Egyptian revival dress, 1920s.
Egyptian revival silver gild and enamel charms necklace, 1920s, on sale on etsy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, let's not forget the graphic arts. illustration was a key for advertising and communication when colour photos were not available. Here a small selection of my favourites:
"Cleopatra", J.C. Leyendecker, for the cover of the Evening Standard, August 1923.
Ad for Egyptian Deities cigarettes, 1920s-30s.
Egyptian Goddess, ca. 1929, George Barbier.
Ramses perfume ad, 1923.
Cover for Harper's Bazaar, February 1927, Erté.
Music sheet cover for the Tutankhamen Shimmy, 1923.
And finally an extra: a Tutankhamen shimmy recorded in 1926:

The Sassafras of Sarah Silverman
Yes, it’s true, Sarah Silverman (b. 1970) has the same birthday as Woody Allen, Bette Midler, Richard Pryor, and Dick Shawn. Did she just decide to become a combination of all of them? She kind of is. She has another major synchronicity with yet another comedian: like Adam Sandler she is a Generation X Jew from New Hampshire! That’s a very exclusive club! And though they’re very different kinds…

Here Comes the Pain: Slipknot's Tour Dates Unleashed
Tumblr media
Celebrating 25 Years of Mayhem, Slipknot Returns with a Haunting North American Tour Featuring Knocked Loose, Orbit Culture, and Vended In the shadowed recesses of the heavy metal world, Slipknot has conjured a tour potent with the ominous allure of their early chaos and self-titled album—marking the 25th anniversary of their eponymous debut with the "Here Comes the Pain" North American tour. This grim celebration weaves together the threads of their legacy, set to haunt arenas from the crypts of New York City's Madison Square Garden to the spectral halls of Los Angeles' Inuit Dome and Austin's Moody Center. Accompanying Slipknot on this macabre journey are the harbingers of hardcore, Knocked Loose, alongside the dark metallurgists of Orbit Culture and Vended—a band born from the lineage of Slipknot's own Corey Taylor and Shawn "Clown" Crahan. This assembly not only promises an auditory assault but a lineage of terror that extends the band's ominous legacy. As the Nine prepare to unleash a year of celebrations that meld U.S. festival apparitions with a European and U.K. pilgrimage, the soul of Slipknot's creation looms large. Guitarist Jim Root reflects on the genesis of their sound with a somber reverence, "We poured our spirit into the first record, not knowing if it would echo beyond the void. Yet here we stand, a testament to the night, selling out not just records but the very halls of the living." Shawn "Clown" Crahan, the band’s percussionist and unyielding visionary, casts a darker pall on their success. "Each stage I ascend, it’s not the numbers that bind us but the maggot culture, thriving in the decay we spread. This anniversary may find us in grander sepulchers, but the intimacy of the crypt will be felt. Prepare to have your essence shattered—we are the disease, and you are already within our grasp." For those enthralled by the prospect of witnessing this spectacle, artist presale tickets have emerged from the shadows today at 12 p.m. ET, available through Knotfest.com. The public will have their chance to seize these tickets on Friday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. local time. Embrace the dark, for Slipknot’s tour promises not just concerts but a profound ritual celebrating a quarter century of sonic malevolence. Prepare for an experience that goes beyond music—it's an invocation of the band’s darkest arts. Action Lab’s President of Creator Relations, Shawn Pryor, has launched his own Kickstarter for LIFTED: OF GODS AND THIEVES. This mythic, sci-fi action graphic novel about a teleporting thief-for-hire and her team is currently on Kickstarter until July 8, 2018 at 10:08 AM EDT. It has raised over $3,500 but needs to reach its $8,500 goal to be a success!
In LIFTED, Sara Jackson is the leader of art and antiquities thieves-for-hire. Constantly chased by a pair of disgraced FBI agents, the team take on many a heist per their clients’ dangerous requests across the globe. Yet the team has an even bigger problem, as Sara unknowingly will be playing a role in a confrontation of gods that could spell worldwide devastation!
LIFTED is created by Shawn Pryor (creator/writer of FORCE, CASH + CARRIE) and Chris Murrin (editor/writer GHOUL SCOUTS, ATHENA VOLTAIRE). The graphic novel is illustrated by John Rodriquez (SPLIT) with colors by George Gant (creator of THE RESET BUTTON and ON THE GRIND) and Eric White. The letterer is Ringo Award nominee Justin Birch (MIRACULOUS, RAVEN THE PIRATE PRINCESS). Uko Smith, who’s worked with LUCASFILM, HASBRO, DC, MARVEL (to name a few) did the cover art.
“LIFTED is a graphic novel five years in the making,” creator Shawn Pryor comments. “I’ve always wanted to create a heist story that mixes elements of films such as The Score and The Thomas Crown Affair with aspects of Clash of the Titans and X-Files. We’ve been able to do something different and dynamic with this dream project of ours, and we can’t wait to share it with all of you.”
The digital edition of the graphic novel is available for $10 and you can get a softcover copy for $20. Deluxe editions, mini-posters and other works by Shawn Pryor (including CASH + CARRIE) are also available. You can check out the rest of the rewards on the Kickstarter page here:

540 Local Elected Officials From All 50 States Urge Prez Trump to Import More Refugees to U.S.
Joe Biden has promised to make this happen, including taking in foreigners from terrorist hotspots around the world. In fact, Joe Biden was one of the original architects of the fraud-ridden refugee program that has destroyed neighborhoods across the U.S.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
by Ann Corcoran
I told you here that the refugee industry was working on a letter to the President urging him to get the refugee flow into America moving again.
Yesterday they sent the letter with 540 signatories.
Says Amnesty International:
By signing this letter, these elected officials have joined together to voice their commitment to welcoming refugees in their communities and reviving the United States’ legacy as a leader in refugee resettlement.
I notice something missing from the letter. It avoids giving the President a number, but the industry has made it very clear!
They want 95,000 refugees to begin arriving on October first.
The President could make a decision this month on how many refugees might be invited to live in the US in FY2021. He could also legally set the ceiling at zero.
All of my posts on the topic are tagged FY2021.
Here are the signatories from yesterday.  The list is handy for identifying those local elected officials who are changing America by changing the people.
I don’t know why the organizers think that these open borders advocates will hold any sway with the President, but they sure make it handy for you to identify the other side where you live. Target them for retirement when they come up for re-election!
(For a little additional fun, see last year’s list here.)
They say the list is bipartisan, but there is no indication of party affiliation.  You will need to look through those listed in your state to see if Republicans are among those looking to import more poverty to your city.
