Staging concept: Ophelia carries around a book that she uses to press different flowers and plants. At one point we see her actually pressing one of the flowers Hamlet's given her before, and we get the impression that she wouldn't part with this book for the world. During the "Get thee to a nunnery" scene, Hamlet rips the book out of her hands, and she goes diving after it to make sure he didn't damage it. And during her final "mad scene", she starts tearing out the relevant pages (rosemary, pansies, fennel, columbines, etc.) to give to everyone present. Laertes is the only one to get the significance of his sister giving away parts of her prized possession, and it adds an extra layer to his grief.

I will never make this because it would be for an audience of one (me) but ever since reading "If we Were Villains" (story about serious drama kids in college who perform shakespeare and deal with a murder) I have been entertaining the thought of a crack fic crossover with High School Musical The Musical The Series where the staff decides they will no longer put on shakespeare after the tragic accident that happened at Thanksgiving, because Shakespeare plays would only increase the tension and drama. So they hire Ms. Jen who decides their spring play will actually be High School Musical (which exists in the 90s in this universe) and it ruins the vibe so much that everyone gives up on being dark and mysterious because they're universally pissed at Ms Jen for making them learn choreoraphed basketball dancing.
#if we were villains is actually genuinely good and has actual literary worth and pulls from shakespeare in an intelligent meaningful way#but unfortunately all i can do is comedy so this is the only fan content i have to offer :(#THE THING IS iwwv is just hsmtmts if it hsmtmts was good and also they committed crimes#they utilize the same parallel of casting choices with real life drama which I love#umm so casting: Meredith would be Sharpay Obvi. I think it would be really funny if James was cast as Ryan bc they hate eachother and would#have to pretend to be siblings working together. And I think ashley tisdale and Lucas Gabreel actually didn't get along when filming#also i love the thought of Ms Jen looking at James and going “i know what you are”#HOWEVER it would be more interesting if james was Chad to Oliver's Troy (which is really just reversing their Romeo and Juliet moment)#bc chad is like nooo don't do theater... stick with me and do basketball... but it would be Coded Subtextually#Unfortunately Wren would be typecast as Gabriella and I don't think that would cause drama bc I don't believe James actually liked her!#I think it was comp het bc she was very sweet and nonthreatening as opposed to Meredith's big flirting energy so she would be a “safe” crus#lets lean into that actually. this gives Wren a chance to have a personality (bc I enjoy this book but it is not good at fleshing out women#So oliver and Wren spend more time together and kind of talk about James a little and Wren is like yeah James is very sweet#and I like him but it feels so hard to get him to feel comfortable with me... i guess he's just closed off and doesn't talk much#we also get to see more of her personality and interests maybe she's like I relate to gabriella because I also like to Read :) feminism#and oliver is like Hmm That Is Not My Experience With Him perhaps our bond is deeper and James does like me Hm#And then Meredith can flirt with him as Sharpay and James gets pissed and in character gets very intense about how Troy can't join THEATER#that's why he's upset and sad bc sharpay represents theater and only that reason and nothing else and he isn't in love with oliver At All#Alexander can be Ryan now since James is Chad (and he's also Gay) and Filippa can be Kenzie bc they're both queer coded#Anyway at rehearsal one day Meredith and James and Oliver are having their fighting over troy moment and then Meredith stops and is like#wait guys. This musical is so freaking stupid. why are we even doing this#and their mutual frustration at their art being turned into a farce is enough to bond them together and they're like#we need to focus on our REAL enemy: ms Jen#and then they hatch a scheme and it's probably like. They dump a bucket of fake blood on her at opening night a la carrie#and then put on their own rebellious production... it still has to be a musical because i like musicals#families with children are in the audience and they're like OK FOLKS! HERE'S ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW!#if we were villains#iwwv#hsmtmts#high school musical the musical the series

some very very quick costume shorthands!
#&juliet#had the absolute luck of watching this live the other night and it was. truly amazing!!! aaah#rough character designs for the younger leads (excluding like the Grown adult duos..) because?? idk#this is how it always starts. once the character designs start getting simplified like this that's when it all begins#which is hmmm timing but i really can't shut up about this musical it was so so fun. absolute vibes and energy#made me laugh and cry and was such an Experience. i adore them all but may specifically made me sob at some parts dfjkldfh#lots of thoughts! but one of the favs is how they wrote it so the existing songs and actions fit so well.#like in a rhyming bit they had frankie accept a drink and then the song was like ''drink in hand'' and i was all !!!!!!#also maybe it's local censorship? but there wasn't the kisses.. they replaced it w kissing hands and then holding hands#which is like a cute nod to the ''hand to hand holy palmers kiss' or smth but also maybe two guys doing that would not have made it past :/#oh my god i. the way rnj parallels the shakespeare duo... whdskjfhgh. may + not being a Girl kdjhgf. frankie and may. aaagh.#angelique being so so badass. i . the speech about Gender by anne and the Proposal by angelique both made the whole theatre cheer love that#also rotating stage lives in my mind rent free i ADORE the set holy moly.. also also the actors were so good. also the Projections.#also the music and costumes and special effects and aerial moments. and the ensemble. and the choreo#also the cast is so talented. and pretty. and the whole confidence part vs the vulnerability of some bits... whshjfgjkl. hhh#im just listing stuff now but it was so vibes. what an experience ever. it's also shot me directly into 14-years-old again so#spent the morning alone vibing to the soundtrack intensely... i just... sometimes things hold special places in your heart idk!!!#i don't know what to do with these designs though... like the show is such a lovely Spectacle but also idk where to branch out by myself no#there's so much to Absorb again and again. i get the feeling any true work from this i would do in a form of an animatic though.. oops#tldr? 1. &juliet very good just as itself 2. we have History 3. i got to see it live which always propels me into bonkers over musicals!#so so rough but i needed to get smth out and . whatever. an art blog is an art blog. back to hiatus now i think#<reminder to myself: this is essentially an artchive.. there's no quality control if you don't want it! have fun!! ily>

I’m sorry
#recently have been doing a bit of a musical marathon cause I’ll never stop being a fucking theatre kid (womp womp)#and like#okay so there’s musicals I outright dislike (dear Evan Hansen) but something rotten is in this middle section thats like#you had a cool premise. why the fuck are you so over saturated Im sex puns and musical references to the point I can’t take u seriously#like I’m supposed to be invested in the romance between Nigel and Portia(?) but everyone of their interactions is just#sex innuendo sex pun sex joke#then there’s nick whos so fuckinh annoying I’m sorry#I’m supposed to feel sympathetic for him meanwhile he’s just like ?? defending a musical about eggs??#and during all of this his brother is clearly spilling his heart out to him#and he just never fucking approved of his love for Portia#even Shakespeare who’s supposed to be the villain or smth is more fun#(and the only British one)#AND NOT JUST IN THE villains are more fun way#but also in the HES ACTUALLY ENJOYABLE#man has a rivarly but still doesn’t want his rival dead cmon that’s interesting#and I’m supposed to be on nicks side durinh all of this#like???? the guy who’s had one song about him being sexist. the one guy who’s being so incosideto this his brother. the guy who’s-#-less enjoyable then the ANTAGONIST#idkkk. idk maybe it’s supposed to be light hearted and I’m being weird cause my favourite musical is falsettos so y’know-#-it’s a character exploration based story#and I know realistically not all musicals want that. but idk it’s just#boring to me#to have a cool premise and fill it with so many jokes it’s like. how am I supposed to take the deeper moments seriously#anyways the songs are good. I hate Shakespeare fucks#and obviously hard to be the bard is great#thank you Christian borle . you just have a knack for playing queer (in this case coded) men don’t you

OKAY OKAY! I know we all joke about Minthara and the skull being a Hamlet reference but I have actively TALKED about Hamlet on this blog before and we need a moment to reference this in a serious way, because the entire story of Hamlet is basically, get this, A STORY ABOUT AN OATH OF VENGEANCE!! And there is LOVE there is family murder, and someday I will go into a post about how aspects of Minthara's character has her represent different facets of this story because she is- by all means HAMLET, but she is also Ophelia, she is also Daisy Ridley's Ophelia.
I can also tell you EXACTLY what she is contemplating when she is 'contemplating a skull' because that particular soliloquy is LITERALLY a speech about death, and the musing of what follows it, questioning whether you deeds are worth it, the SUFFERING is worth all of this trouble if you're just going to fucking die. LIKE!!!!!!! IM FUCKING FERAL ABOUT IT! YOU GUYS HAVE NO IDEA!!!!!!!!

I've been sitting on why this video rubbed me the wrong way for a few days trying to formulate my thoughts on it and I really have to disagree - "Romeo is a fuckboy" is a very much a modern take on the play that ignores the literary devices at play and Juliet's own agency. Romeo and Juliet asks us to suspend our disbelief for the "love at first sight" trope, and Rosaline's presence (or rather lack of it) is critical to that.
Exploring Rosaline as a character through a modern lens is great—hell, I did the same myself for a personal project in high back in school—but the fact that she doesn't appear is very deliberate. We can't see Romeo's love for her as genuine because we don't even get to see who she is as a person, only his impression of her.
When he speaks about Rosaline in early scenes, he does a (bad) attempt at the Petrarchan sonnet form, a style of poetry associated here with flowery language pining after an unattainable woman. That tells us exactly what she is to him—the unattainable object of his shallow teen affections, and exactly what Juliet is not.
Juliet is a real flesh and blood person on the stage, one capable of engaging with Romeo on equal footing and actually reciprocating, and her first meeting with Romeo blows all of his cringefail poetry out of the water. We love to be cynical about love at first sight, but it's crucial to look at it in a theatrical context. The very first lines the two exchange form a sonnet: Romeo opens with a metaphor and lets Juliet expound on it. It's poetry created through mutual participation, the musical theatre equivalent of breaking into a duet. We are meant to take it seriously as an expression of mutual love, and Romeo's verse improves later on as well to drive the point home. If you have the time for it, there's a really great breakdown of the sonnet by Ben Crystal here (timestamped around 11:30 if it doesn't work) that I love. (And the whole video is worth it if you enjoy Shakespeare!)
So when Rosaline keeps coming up throughout the play, Shakespeare isn't secretly undercutting the romance or trying to frame Romeo as fickle and insincere—he's highlighting the contrast between Romeo's feelings for the two and reinforcing his relationship with Juliet. The tragedy doesn't lie in the two of them being Stupid Teens trying to rush things prematurely, but rather the adults responsible for the toxic environment that won't allow them to explore a relationship in the first place.

Fans celebrate the casting of Nichelle Nichols as Uhura as a moment for actors of color, which they should be.
But I also wanted to spotlight the casting of these iconic guest starring characters, seen in episodes of TOS.
Tumblr media
Percy Rodriguez was cast as flag officer Commodore Stone, who was Kirk's superior in the chain of command. Stone is one of the officers that presides over Kirk's court martial.
Tumblr media
Booker Bradshaw was the original Dr. M'Benga, seen in two episodes of TOS. at the time, M'Benga was Starfleet's first and only medical specialist in Vulcan Physiology, having spent a year's residency on Vulcan.
Tumblr media
One of the finest minds in computer technology in the 23rd century, and creator of the duotronic computer, Dr. Richard Daystrom, was played by William Marshall, whose work in Shakespeare, and his roles as Paul Robeson and Frederick Douglass, added to the gravitas of his portrayal.
A flag officer, a specialist in Vulcan medicine, and one of the finest minds in a field of technology, played by actors of color, during the turbulent 1960s.

Point #1: The first thing we learn about Emet-Selch, even before we learn that Solus zos Galvus is Emet-Selch, is that Solus loved theatre.
Point #2: Emet-Selch plays the villain with mannerisms so over-the-top you'd think he's about to burst into a disney villain-style song and dance number at almost any moment.
Point #3: He's self-aware enough to recognize that he is a villain in your story but a hero to his own people, and that whoever wins the battle will write history to declare the loser the villain.
Point #4: The Tempest, the zone where Amaurot is located, is named for the Shakespeare play of the same name, with other landmarks named after characters from the play. The BGM "Full Fathom Five" is also named for an iconic line.
Point #5: Amaurot feels so empty because it is, in essence, a set for a stage play. After the play is preformed it has no purpose.
Back to Point #1: Emet-Selch really loved theatre.
